Speaker 1 (00:00):
Our guest on the Beacon Plumbing Hotline right now from
Notre Dame Riley Mills, defensive tackle. Thanks for joining us
here on Sports Radio ninety three point three KJR FM
in Seattle. High Riley, Welcome to Seattle. Hey you guys
doing you Tell me, buddy, how are you doing.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
I'm doing great. I'm doing really good to see about
fifteen minutes ago.
Speaker 1 (00:22):
Your story is a terrific one, and let's just talk
about that because you've overcome a lot of things injury wise.
Your team first, guy, I want to start first with
the family. Is it safe to say an NFL player,
a drafted NFL player may not even be the best
athlete in the family. Between mom and dad and an
ann who played on the LPGA tour.
Speaker 2 (00:41):
Yeah, there's a lot to compete with. So you know,
we kind of jabb at each other every day. But yeah,
I know my mom my dad. Like my dad played
football yukon, my mom played volleyball. You know, I get
my teams from her just because she's a little bit taller.
And then my aunt put in the LPGA, So yeah,
I got some tough competitions.
Speaker 1 (00:56):
Well, tell us about Seattle. How did did you have
an indication that you may be coming here, and and
why yeah, I.
Speaker 2 (01:04):
Just I went on my third visit there. I just
had a great, great experience, you know, loved in Seattle
and then talking to coaches. I loved to plan for me,
so I knew I loved it. You know, as soon
as I stepped foot there and I got there, and
you know, I told Ad the DC, I was like, hey, man,
come up and get me because I want to be here.
So I would just bless to see that phone number
come up and be able to talk to them.
Speaker 1 (01:20):
Why'd you want to be here?
Speaker 2 (01:23):
I just saw, you know, the game plan they have
for me and how they want to use me as
a player. And it's a great program.
Speaker 3 (01:28):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:28):
And they're a great team. I remember growing up watching them,
watching beast Mode, Richard Sherman, all those guys, Like I
love what they're about, and I think, you know, they're
a great team. They're ready to go and they want
to get after it. And that's kind of who I
am as a player. Riley.
Speaker 3 (01:40):
This is Rob running from Fox Sports dot Com and
I view you as a really nice fit for Mike
McDonald's defense just because of the just the kind of
the blue collar mentality that I see you play with. King.
I don't know how familiar you are with the Seahawks
defensive line already. They've got some guys like like Lard
Williams and their first round selection a year ago Byer Murphy,
(02:02):
the second Jaron Reid. These are all guys that definitely
can get after the quarterback at times. Can you explain
how you feel that your fit is in this defense
and and what what turned you loose so to speak
and enjoying the seven and a half sacks this past season, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (02:21):
I guess you know, for this team, you know, maybe
have some great players like you know, Leonard Williams was
the first guy abro to me in terms of who
I want to model my game after and who's done
at a high level. So I'm just blessed to goble
to work with him, and you know, I want to
pick his brand and see what he's done to make
him so successful. But you know, you got Buyer and Murphy,
you get that like everyone else, they've got a great
defensive Why I'm there, which is you know, someone I
love to come into because I want to learn from
all those guys and get better. But you know at
(02:42):
the same time, I want to see this team win
a Super Bowl way I want to win games, so
you know, somebod that turns me up. It's just like, look,
I love My favorite was the ball roups. You guys
want to run through someone's face. So you know, once
I you know, out on the field, healthy run around,
Like the first thing I'm doing is getting that pass
rushing and I just want to run through someone's face
and get to the quarterback.
Speaker 3 (02:57):
Well, and you talked about that, you want to, you know,
help the team get to the super Bowl. Of course
you you helped your team get to the college football playoffs,
and you took an unusual route to follow your Irish
too throughout the playoffs into the National Championship game and stuff.
Can you kind of explain the the RV routes that
you took there?
Speaker 2 (03:17):
Yeah, so yeah, I think I got injured. I couldn't
fly to Georgia because there was a Larry word about
blood cloths on the plane. So that'f we won that game,
I was like, look, I can't sit at home and
watch another game on the couch and I was going insane.
So I was like, we got to figure something out.
So I get a deal with you know, an r
V company and el Cart and you know, one of
our donors reached out and helped me out with that.
And it was at twenty four twenty five hour RV
(03:39):
ride with me, my parents, my girlfriend, the dog, and
my uncle Paul was a firefighter, drove straight down to
Miami for the Orange Bowl. So look, we got closer
as a family. I tall, I know it was. It
was a great time, but I was blessed to be there.
I was, you know, it really helped me a lot
to be around the guys, to be around the team
and be there for that.
Speaker 1 (03:56):
This is Riley Mills, new Seahawk defensive tackle, joining us
here on sports for an I three point three k
r FM day three of the NFL drafty in Fornes Roberank,
foxports dot Com and and Riley. Just like a football team,
we have a cast and a team of thousands, or
at least a dozen or maybe even less. But our
friend Greg Bell, the beat writer for the Tacoma News
rebunis here as well. I think he wants to fire
off a question two to you.
Speaker 4 (04:16):
Right, Greg Bell, the distribute I was just on the
film with you on the call during that twenty five
hour RV ride, Could you have imagined that you're gonna
still get drafted in the NFL? Do you have any
doubts at that point? What was your mindset about your
future at that point?
Speaker 2 (04:32):
Yeah, Look, I mean there's a lot of uncertainty in
the future, and I knew, you know, for me, I've
gave everything I had in that season. You know, we
had another name, and you know, if I had had
something left to give or there was like more I
could have done, then maybe I would be feeling different.
But look, I gave everything I had to the program
and the team, and you know, I knew they were,
you know, in a position where they can keep going.
So for me, it was just about I trusted my
teammates and you know, at that point, I just want
(04:53):
to be around them and you know, try to be
a leader, you know, off the field as much as
I was on.
Speaker 4 (04:58):
And I have to ask also, team compares you and
comps you and says you want to model your game
after Leonard Williams. What did you think about that as
a college senior, college guy coming out of college football.
Speaker 2 (05:10):
Yeah, I mean he was the first round pick and
he's still in the league, you know, being a dominant player.
So I mean that's a blessing and become to him.
But you know, I think he's stillone that you know,
places him with me, like we're big bodies, but we're
good athletes, and you know, I just want to learn
how he goes about his day and if I could
pick up things for him, you know, if I can
just get a little bit better each day by working
with him, that'd be the goal.
Speaker 1 (05:28):
Uh, hey, Riley, I'm just curious to One of the
things that that's interesting to me is when guys stick around.
Your coach went to LSU, Brian Kelly, you stayed at
Notre Dame. Why.
Speaker 2 (05:37):
I mean, for me, my problems were going to get
fixed by a portal, like you know, I thought, you know,
for me, I'd get better a football, I get better
at certain things, and you know, I wanted to be
the guy and I knew if I chase that somewhere else,
I'd still have to overcome those same things. So you know,
and when I sign a commitment in high school, I
signed a Notre Dame Like, yeah, I made that commitment.
So for me, I want to stay home. And they
had a great staff and resources. So yeah, to see
a payoff now is just a blessing.
Speaker 1 (05:58):
Final thing for you. Ryler Riley Bills joining us health wise,
when do you expect to be a full participant coming
off that knee injury and a shoulder injury as well.
Speaker 2 (06:06):
Yeah, I think probably beginning of the seasons, where I've
been told, I know my rehab process has been going great,
and yeah, I'm well ahead of where i should be
just with the work I've put in every day and
the staff and the great trainers I've been with, you know,
proactive to notre day in to you know, across the country.
So I'm just hoping to get out there as soon
as I can.
Speaker 1 (06:22):
Congratulations and welcome to Seattle.
Speaker 2 (06:24):
Awesome, appreciate it.
