Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's the Oh Show.
Speaker 2 (00:01):
My name is Otis, and one of my best buddies,
Drew Baldridge on with me right now. I've been begging
you to come on the show because she's somebody's daughter.
Speaker 1 (00:08):
Is just exploding right now.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
People keep calling in wanting to hear it over and
over again, and it makes me, It makes my heart
happy because we've been friends for quite some time and
I was pretty much, you know, there for almost the
conception of this song, because I was at the wedding
that you wrote it for, which was your wedding.
Speaker 3 (00:26):
Yeah, you're probably in the music video somewhere.
Speaker 1 (00:28):
I am a couple of times.
Speaker 2 (00:29):
You know, you got to stop it, like really, you
got to stop it at the right frame and then.
Speaker 1 (00:33):
You'll see me in the back. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (00:36):
Man, what a journey, What a journey it's been.
Speaker 2 (00:38):
Absolutely, you're almost the first independent artist in country music
to dare I say it, have a number one single.
We're in the top four, top three at this point.
Speaker 3 (00:51):
Yeah, man, and it just, you know, it just keeps
going and I'm just blowing away, you know. I mean, obviously, Otis,
you know my story from twenty sixteen to twenty nineteen
had a record deal, lost that record deal in twenty nineteen,
thought I'd get a new record deal that didn't happen.
Couldn't get Nashville excited about what I was doing again,
which I totally get because I had, you know, two
(01:12):
or three songs at radio that failed. And you know,
in Nashville, you kind of get one shot and if
that shot doesn't work, you move on to the next one,
which I you know, I understand. And so you know,
twenty twenty one rolled around. Me and my wife got married.
She danced to this song with her dad at our wedding.
I made a special wedding version just so she could
do that, and it was such a special moment. And
(01:33):
I remember the next week, we were on our honeymoon,
and I was like, I'm gonna post it on TikTok
and just say, hey, if this gets five thousand likes,
we'll put it out. I'm just hoping it would get
five thousand likes because the song was already coming out,
you know.
Speaker 1 (01:45):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:48):
We posted it was Wednesday night, and man, I woke
up the next day and it had almost ten million
views in like a day, and I just couldn't believe it.
The song comes out it goes tops Spotify, viral on
all their charts, and you know, I'm thinking I'm getting
a call from every record label. And we got some calls,
but nobody was like super pumped like I was, or
(02:09):
there was no talks of going to radio, and I
was just like, what is what is happening? So last year,
you know, I went out and I did this tour
where I played a bunch of people's backyards because I
lost my booking agent and my manager during this too.
I mean I was just bare bones, just me. And
last year I was like, you know what, screw it.
I'm just gonna freaking start my own record label and
send it to radio myself. I think I even called you.
(02:31):
I was like, man, what do I do? I'm gonna
tell this I'm scared. We did.
Speaker 2 (02:34):
We had a few conversations where You're like, I believe
in this song, I'm seeing something we've you know, how
should I approach?
Speaker 1 (02:41):
What should I do? Do you have anybody I should
talk to?
Speaker 2 (02:43):
And I was like absolutely, But I will give you
credit for the relationships you had already built, uh with
me with other people in radio, just being out there
shaking hands, stopping by radio stations, talking to program directors.
Speaker 1 (02:58):
All that added up to where we're at.
Speaker 3 (03:00):
I think, yeah, man, it was just like you know what,
I'm just gonna do that. I'm just gonna start call
my radio friends and just go in and see them
do interviews. Like just show up in the station, be like, hey,
I'm here, I'm out front, Like let's let's talk about somebody.
Speaker 2 (03:12):
Life's about relationships and who you you know, who you
connect with that thing it is.
Speaker 3 (03:16):
But like you said, I knew this song was special.
I watched it, you know, on TikTok. I think now
we're over a billion views of a daughter on TikTok,
which is just wild to me. And the stream's been crazy,
and you know, I was seeing all this in real
time and I just don't think Nashville was really seeing
it like I was. And so we sent this to
radio and all my friends are like, man, you're crazy.
(03:37):
You know how hard this is that you're you know,
people do this every day in Nashville. They start record labels,
they try to send songs to radio, they die. And
I was like, man, if I just get top, I've
never had a Top forty, Like, if I could just
get a Top forty. That's my goal. And they're like, really,
you just want to top forty, and I was like, man,
if I had a top forty, my dreams would be like, hey,
I got I'm a top forty artist. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (03:58):
You've had a few radio singles here and there. Rebound
came around Senior year, did really well. We played that
quite a bit in Atlanta. But this is the one
that just had some magic to it.
Speaker 3 (04:09):
Man. Yeah, Now I can't believe we're sitting on here
and we're talking about being top five. And you know,
like you said, the first country artist to self, you know,
self independently get their number one, you know, first number
one would be insane. And I just I really can't
believe that we're here, and I can't believe how many
people this song has reached and touched, all because you know,
(04:29):
we just didn't give up. And I think it's just
a good message for anybody out there, not just in music,
but any dream of any job that you have, of
just like, hey, if you think you believe in something,
when you're passionate about it, just go do it. You know,
let the nose or the you know not right now
is fuel you. And that's kind of what I did.
I was like, I'm gonna show them, you know, I'm
gonna I'm gonna freaking, you know, make this happen because
(04:52):
I know, I believe in it so much, and that's
what we're doing right now. And to sit here, like
I said, and sit top five and some of those
people that told you were crazier, like can this is awesome,
you know, and that's just like super cool. But also
the message of this song, knowing about treating women right,
is getting heard by millions and millions and millions of people.
I'm just I'm just very very glad that that's happening.
Speaker 1 (05:13):
Absolutely.
Speaker 2 (05:14):
Do you know how much Ammo though, when you get
a number one with a song about your wife that
you're giving her to say.
Speaker 1 (05:20):
It all because on because of me.
Speaker 3 (05:22):
If I wasn't around, well, she says that sometimes trust me,
I like, well, you know you have me to thank
for this, right.
Speaker 2 (05:30):
I love Katie. Katie's amazing. Your life is not only
changed with this song, but in the in between when
you created it for her and the wedding, You've also
had a little guy lyric that's in your life and
he's growing so fast and just the most adorable little
guy man.
Speaker 3 (05:46):
Yeah, that's been hard and awesome. You know, it's like
one of my busiest seasons of my life. And you know,
because you know, I didn't have a manager or a
booking agent or a label. I was all of that.
So so like until like the last week, you know,
we're getting the manager in a booking agent, which is awesome.
But for you know, the last three years, I've been
running everything. I've booking my own shows, I'm running a
(06:06):
promo staff, I'm going out and doing the radio shows,
and so I've missed a lot of time of just
being busy. You know, my wife Katie, she's just been
taking the brun of that of raising you know, being
there for Lyric when I am out on the road,
and you know, it's a toll on all of us.
It's almost like the more in music, the more busy
(06:27):
you get. It's like, hey, that's super cool, but like
the busier you get, the harder it is on your
family a little bit. Yeah, and so I'm seeing that
now of like, you know, it's taking its toll on
Katie and and on me missing Lyric. But it's obviously
we're all so happy and feel so blessed that we're
(06:47):
at But I'm just saying, like it takes a special
family dynamic to get through all this crazy music stuff
of touring, and you know, hopefully we can get in
a bus where they can come out.
Speaker 2 (06:58):
I was gonna say, we've been trying to tak Katie
into hopping on a bus. Can you guys getting one
and touring with you a little bit?
Speaker 3 (07:04):
Yeah, It's like I'm in a van right now still, like,
you know, I don't have a bus yet, and hopefully,
you know, in twenty twenty five, we can get to
a bus where my wife and Lyric can come out
and you know, enjoy on the road time. But right
now I'm in a van with seven dudes and we're
traveling that way because we you know, we're not making
enough on our touring yet. We haven't seen because all
(07:26):
these shows we booked were a year ago. So it's like, okay,
now we're top five and everybody's like, oh man, you're
like living the dream. You're in the bus, and it's like, no, man,
this is our van. We rolled up. Check it out.
Speaker 2 (07:38):
Well, a pretty cool way to celebrate your birthday week
being Top five.
Speaker 1 (07:41):
Happy birthday to you, man, thanks, man, crazy.
Speaker 3 (07:44):
I just still can't believe it when you say that,
like saying that we're top five. You know, a year ago,
we couldn't get any record label to pay attention to us.
We didn't have a manager, we didn't have a booking agent, nobody. Obviously,
me and you were buds and you knew that time,
and I was just putting out music and me and
you were always you were always calling me like, Drue,
this sounds like a hit. You know. I'm like, I
think it is too, And I was like, I don't
(08:06):
know how to get it to be a hit. And
so it's cool now to be like, wow, this is
actually the music that we really believed in is working,
and hopefully we can continue to do that with our
new music.
Speaker 2 (08:17):
Country Born's the album, and I think I've said that
about four or five, probably the whole album. I call
you all the time like, oh my god, dude, I
was listening to this one. This is what I love
about this song doing its thing is that now people
can discover the guy I know, the amazing like lyrical
writer that puts that. You already have so many big
hits that people haven't discovered yet.
Speaker 1 (08:39):
So if you.
Speaker 2 (08:40):
I highly suggest grabbing Country Born listening to it on
the iHeartRadio app because it's one of my absolute favorite
country albums over the past couple of years.
Speaker 3 (08:49):
And I'm just so excited. And I think I've sent
you some new music too that I'm really excited about.
Speaker 1 (08:54):
Oh my god, yes, that I.
Speaker 3 (08:56):
Just cannot wait for people to hear. And you know,
this is music that has been recorded by other artists
that I had to fight to get back, and I'm
really really excited and also stressed about all of it.
But it's super like, this is the music that I
wrote for a purpose, and I wrote for a reason.
It comes from my heart, and so I'm like, what
(09:17):
better person to sing it than me? And so I'm
really excited for people to hear what we have coming
down the pipeline. I think it's some of our Every
artist is going to say this, I think it's some
of my best work yet, but I really do believe
that it is. It's we've worked really hard. We've been
writing for the last couple of years to create a project,
and you know, hopefully as soon as Daughter goes number one,
I'm just putting it out there as soon as it
(09:38):
does go number one. We're going to have another song
in the pipeline, getting ready to come out.
Speaker 1 (09:43):
Absolutely.
Speaker 2 (09:44):
So I know you celebrated your birthday in a special way.
Where did you go?
Speaker 3 (09:48):
Man? We went to South Hall, which is a place
just in Franklin, Tennessee. And my wife is all about
the spa days, loves the spa days. So so we
got up big, like half spat day. I mean, we
went in there at eight o'clock and didn't leave till
three and just like you know, the son of the
steam room massages and just like everybody, my buddy text
(10:11):
me and said, oh, top five changes people.
Speaker 1 (10:13):
You're on bougie now getting the spot.
Speaker 3 (10:17):
And it's like, man, you know, top five means your
body's broken and you need all the traveling.
Speaker 2 (10:23):
But but but what I saw on your Instagram is
you also did something that's way not bougie.
Speaker 1 (10:28):
You went to Cracker Barrel.
Speaker 3 (10:30):
Freaking Cracker Barrel. That's we started a day off with.
We went and got Cracker Barrel. My Katie, she's so
funny because she is the bougie one of us and
like like the nice thing, and I'm like, she's like, oh,
we should go here for breakfast. I'm like, this is
my birthday. I'm freaking going to crack cracker. That sounds
not so we went and have cracker barrel, which is
(10:51):
still I just I love cracker barrel.
Speaker 2 (10:53):
Okay is cracker barrel? How are you going to celebrate
a number one? Is that the Where are you going
to eat? What are you gonna go?
Speaker 3 (10:58):
Do? It?
Speaker 1 (10:59):
Once it?
Speaker 3 (11:00):
I was talking to Katie about it, I was like,
I don't know, Like, you know, We've had so many
celebratory We have this place down the road from us
called Puffy Muffin, and they have these big Boston cream
like cakes, and so every time, like we would get
Top twenty, be like celebrating the night, We're gonna get
one of those cakes Top twenty, you know, And it's
like so so now I'm like top ten. I was like, oh,
(11:21):
we're getting another cake. Like I've ate so many cakes.
I can't eat cake for number one? Like I gotta
figure out what to do. I was telling Katie. I
was like, man, what should we do? Like something crazy
like skydiving or swimming with sharks. She's like, you have a.
Speaker 1 (11:34):
Son, like, don't put your life on the line for this.
Speaker 3 (11:39):
Don't put your life on the line. So I don't
know what I'm gonna do yet. You know, I would
really love I did this whole tour where I was
telling you I played in backyards. You know, that was
what got me here. I did over COVID my fans
and listeners. They literally changed my life. You know. I
went around the country and played over three hundred people's
backyards and they paid me to be there. And so
(12:01):
that is something that's really special to me. And so
everybody's asking, how are you going to do the number
one party? It's like, man, I really want to do
a number one party in somebody's backyard. I just think
that would be super cool. And if that's the backyard
here in Nashville or wherever, but invite everybody and have
the number one party in somebody's backyard. What a what
a cool way to do. And also I have these
two festivals. I throw on a festival in my hometown
(12:22):
in September.
Speaker 1 (12:24):
And Patuca, Illinois.
Speaker 3 (12:26):
Yeah yeah, and so it would be so cool, Like
that's only going to be like not even a month
after we go number one, but to treat that like
a number one party too, with all my hometown people,
you know, Hey, we're celebrating the number one tonight.
Speaker 1 (12:39):
All right, I'm booking a flant already.
Speaker 3 (12:41):
Coming on Illinois boy.
Speaker 1 (12:43):
Yeah, that's right.
Speaker 3 (12:45):
Yeah, we're gonna celebrate it. And I'm just man, like
I said, I'm super excited. We'll probably celebrate this number
one four or five times different ways.
Speaker 2 (12:55):
I just saw recently you were playing before a baseball game.
Speaker 1 (12:57):
Where were you at?
Speaker 3 (12:59):
Yeah, man, we were up in Madison.
Speaker 1 (13:01):
Yeah I worked there before.
Speaker 3 (13:03):
Oh nice. Yeah, they have a i say, a minor
league stadium, but it's not a minor league stadium. It's
like a college affiliate. It's called Mallards of some sort.
And uh, you know, went up there and played a
little show and they were like, hey, can you throw
out the first pitch?
Speaker 1 (13:16):
And I was, fun, Man.
Speaker 3 (13:18):
That's easy, I got that, you know. And then I
get out there and I feel like a fish out
of water, Like I'm playing catch with the catcher before
and I'm throwing it over his head, I'm throwing it
into the dirt. I'm like, man, I gotta start practicing
four lyric gets older here so I can just play catch, right,
And then I was you know, most of the time,
I'm so stressed if I have to sing the national anthem.
I thought throwing out the first pitch would be easier,
(13:38):
but then I get out there and I'm like, oh
my gosh, I'm gonna make a complete fool out of myself.
I'm gonna throw it over the catcher's head. And I
got up there and I just barely, you know, I
barely tossed it. I threw it high, hit him right
in the glove, and I was like, all right, we're good.
We're good.
Speaker 1 (13:53):
Yeah, it's nerve wracking.
Speaker 2 (13:54):
Now we're gonna have to get you to a Braves
game to maybe throw the national anthem.
Speaker 3 (13:58):
I'm a Cardinals fan. So when the Cardinals played the
Brave sorry to hear that, Let's come you guys have
read that only nuts this year.
Speaker 1 (14:05):
I don't know. They came in and played pretty hard.
It was. It was a great series.
Speaker 2 (14:08):
But what's what's the country song that made you fall
in love with the genre?
Speaker 3 (14:15):
Yeah? Man, it was definitely Alabama Born country. And I
think it's so cool that my my album was titled
Country Born.
Speaker 1 (14:24):
You know, I didn't get that.
Speaker 3 (14:26):
That's nice and and uh, you know born Country was
a song and a line in that song says I
have a hundred years of down home running through my blood.
And growing up, we grew up on a farm. My
grandpa was big farmer. His dad was a farmer, and
his dad was a farmer. And my grandpa had this
old place out west of town that he called down home.
That's where he grew up. And the house is still there.
(14:46):
It's all falling in trees and falling on it. His
dad built it. And so growing up, it was always like, Hey,
we're gonna go down home. We're gonna go deer hunting. Hey,
you know, we're gonna move the tractor down home. And
and so when I heard that song and it says
got one hundred years down home and through my blood,
I was like, that's me. I'm the down home. You know,
I got one hundred years down home with my blood.
And I was like, so that's just really stuck with
(15:08):
me my whole life of just that one line, how
that can just be like, oh man, country music is
about life about me, And that's what has really driven
my songs. And like you said, you know, lyrics are
a big thing that I really strive to make sure
I'm really putting out the best lyric possible, and just
because that lyric has resonated with me my whole life.
Speaker 1 (15:29):
I mean, you named your son that, so it makes
that's right.
Speaker 2 (15:33):
What's the current country song that's got you vibing that
you turn up every time?
Speaker 3 (15:37):
Oh Man, dirt Cheap one hundred percent is the song
that I'm turning up every time. My buddy Josh Phillips
wrote that song and wrote it all by himself, which
is super impressive. It's hard to write songs by yourself,
and especially songs that great. And the music video for
that song, Oh my goodness, it is so good it
(15:59):
is made me cry the first time I watched it
and brings that emotion about and that's what I think
what makes country music and that's what I love about
Cody Johnson is just he always puts out real life
songs and that's what that's what moves me as an artist.
So that song, every time I hear it, I get goosebumps.
I love it. I wish I could have cut it.
Speaker 2 (16:19):
Yeah, Cody Johnson is incredible, and you are kind of
following the same path of taking country music kind of
back to its roots, which is three chords in the
truth and yeah, you know, we have the fun, we
can have the dancing, you know, the Morgan walland great songs,
but country music is always going to come back to
those the feelings that you get, the emotions, like you
talked about, the memories that get you know, it's turned
(16:42):
up when you hear a certain song in country music,
and that's what the genre is always going.
Speaker 1 (16:47):
To live for.
Speaker 3 (16:48):
Well, I appreciate you saying that, Bo, that's that's amazing.
Thank you for saying that.
Speaker 1 (16:52):
Absolutely.
Speaker 2 (16:53):
Drew Baldridge, love you brother. Have the best next couple weeks.
I know you will, and just keep trucking.
Speaker 1 (17:00):
Dude.
Speaker 2 (17:01):
I'm ready for you to have the next number one
after this one. I'm thinking ahead already and it's and
I'm sworn to secrecy, but this next song is all
the emotions, all the emotions, so it.
Speaker 3 (17:14):
Is, man. Well, I can't wait for the world to
hear it. And I appreciate you having me on here. Man,
I can't believe we're on here talking about a top
five and a possible number one. A year ago, I
was just calling you be like, hey, we're gonna try this,
we're gonna send this to radio, and now here we
are and it's sent to radio, and y'all are playing
the crap out of it at the ball and everywhere
on your your shows, that all the shows you do.
(17:34):
I don't know how many shows you do, but you
do a million of them, so hire many shows. I
know you're playing it, and I just want to say
thank you, so thanks for having me on here, buddy.
Speaker 1 (17:42):
Absolutely God bless you, God bless you, buddy.
