The people of Jeremiah's day considered the word of the Lord to be a reproach. They were given to greed, and everyone dealt falsely with their neighbor. No one was radical for the truth, or, as we would say in our time, no one was radical for Jesus, who is the truth. 

  We contrast that with the conversion of the Apostle Paul, who was not lukewarm, but already radical for the religious self-righteous version of God's law....

We grant blanket immunity and undeserved credibility to trust certain people because of their position. We must look at character, integrity, and the fruit of the Spirit in discerning the safety of the people we are trusting. But telling lies is not as dangerous as believing those lies.
