Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Darcy Waldegrave
from News Talk SEDB.

Speaker 2 (00:32):
Right evening when a sports talk. It's a Wednesday night,
seven after seven on the sixteenth of April twenty twenty five.
My name is Darcy Waldergrave. Here I am from now
through to eight o'clock the season we're talking sport. I'dby Leaguan,
ro'dby Union to be precise. Couple of staples meeting one

(00:53):
veg if you will. Later on in the piece, we're
going to catch up with Mike Evan Colony Rus. It's
the captain of the Blues, the Blues women's side who
are taking on the Coloritar's women's side. It's coming up
tomorrow night a five past seven's over at North Harbor.
It's the Trans Tasman Battle of the Way. Henna cool.

(01:17):
And this is backing off what I thought was a
fantastic game of rugby. It got a lot of eyeballs
from TV Land, didn't get a lot of bums on seats,
but that's okay. And even though my team Matta I
got beaten of the last by the Blues. Thoroughly stimulating
experience and really good eye forward to where women's rugby

(01:40):
can go. Yeah, I know it's a slow burn and
there'll be plenty of people criticize me. Again, there's a
mag enough money and you got to start somewhere, right,
and they have and I think it's accelerating with its
quality and the enjoyment you get when you watch it. Anyway,
that's later on the piece. Maya Roos or Mike Evonlany

(02:03):
Russ joining us to talk about that. Up first, going
chat with Steve Price, former Warriors skip. What is that
with the Melbourne storm seventeen in a row?

Speaker 3 (02:11):
What is this?

Speaker 2 (02:13):
It's told me if I'm wrong here, ladies and gentlemen,
But back in Prices day, I think that the wires
used to go over there and touch them up. I'm
pretty sure that was the case. Maybe I'm losing my mind,
Maybe I've lost my mind. I'm not sure how this
operates it. We're going to talk to him about that,
about what happened about this mental block with the Warriors,

(02:37):
about the amount of changes in the side due to
injury and due to suspension, and what there does to
the head space of the wars On Saturday night at
home before they take on the Broncos, that star studded backline. Gee,
the pack's not that bad either. So I talked to
Steve about that shortly, and then I'll ask you, Yeah,

(03:00):
how much do you read into a beating like that
from the storm, because you know what I don't, And
I'll explain that to you later on the peace. I
like to know your thoughts around that because talking to
people during the week, getting texted by friends on the phone,
I think people are overreacting to that this is going
to happen anyway. We'll get your thoughts on that later
on the piece. What more important in mind to be

(03:22):
fair before we go anywhere near our two guests, Price
and Rousset. Let's do what we always do here on.

Speaker 1 (03:29):
Sports Talk, Sport Today.

Speaker 2 (03:31):
And in Sport Today, Blues coach Vern Cutter has given
it the Rassi Erasmus kind of as a team for
a good Friday's Pie fight against the Crusaders. There's a
six too bench split. Vern Shears's thoughts around the call.
It's a little bit more experience. We feel it's going
to be a tough contest Friday night. It could be
a battle five minutes from the line for five minutes

(03:53):
to play. So having had a couple of fresh players
that can help us there. Opposition coach Robert Penny got
wind of it and.

Speaker 3 (04:01):
Six two that's there's risk and rewards and everywhere you
go with it.

Speaker 4 (04:05):
So that's interesting. But it does certainly indicate something.

Speaker 2 (04:08):
Yeah, it does indicate something. Rob succinct, that's for that.
Golfer Ryan Fox wouldn't mind another crack at the Olympic
Games this time though as part of the new mixed
teams event. He'll be older, maybe swept away with the
troll under the bridge, and there will be competition.

Speaker 4 (04:26):
He'll be forty one at that point, so yeah, there's
a lot of water to go into the bridge before then,
and we've got some pretty good golfers coming up now
and playing well on the world stage, so I'm sure
there's going to be a decent amount of competition for
those Olympic spots in a few years time.

Speaker 2 (04:40):
Hugelius Mia Mo two is on the comeback before my
IBO super bantamweight champion will step up two classes to
super featherweight. The weight cutting and the illness have not
been kind to her, but she has a plan.

Speaker 5 (04:55):
I Am going to see specialists just to see ways
of how to manage it, or if there is other
ways to help that can just give me some relief.

Speaker 2 (05:05):
Pneumonia, deep vein, thrombosis, hard weight cutting, not making a.

Speaker 6 (05:12):
Job, and Ricky the Punta Ponting is bouncing his punjaub
Kings have defended the lowest total in seventeen years of
IPL Upoltry.

Speaker 2 (05:22):
One hundred and eleven was too much for the night Riders.
I've coached a lot of games in the IPL, and
that might just be about the best win that I've
ever had. Twenty three days ago we couldn't defend one
hundred and forty six. And here we are, you know,
defending one hundred and twelve with sixteen runs up our sleeves.
Do you believe it's been going seventeen years?

Speaker 7 (05:42):
Wow?

Speaker 2 (05:43):
And that's all right. Let's get amongst the better of
rugby league now, shock horror? Was it? Really?

Speaker 8 (05:50):
Though?

Speaker 2 (05:51):
What happened over the weekend when the storm pole acts
the Warriors? Hey, Warriors did well on the second half,
but by that stage the game had been well and
truly buried. It was six foot under with no sign
of life. So do we read into this? Why do
we read too much into this? What happens now for

(06:12):
more Warriors Skipper mister Stephen Price joins the program now
to discuss good evening. Stephen, I'm very well interesting turnaround
for the Warriors last week in the Melbourne Storm have
done it again. And I've said that the thing with
the NRL is that from time to time there's going

(06:33):
to be a lopsided whipping. It happens in this competition,
but it's always the Storm. What are your thoughts around that,
because back in your day that wasn't the case, was it.

Speaker 9 (06:45):
No, it wasn't, And that's sort of a bogey team,
I suppose for the Warriors at the moment, and particularly
in Melbourne, they've got a fair confidence when they come
up against the Warriors because they've had some really good
wins there. And yeah, as you were saying, when I
was playing, like the weather's very similar, you got a
lot of Warriors fans in Melbourne, so it sort of
felt like a home game. So we always really playing

(07:06):
in Melbourne and obviously against a very good footy team
and no better way to play against the best, to
challenge yourself and we come up with a lot more
wins and losses there, that's for sure. And yeah, it's
a challenge for the team at the moment, but yeah,
that game's in the rearview mirror. Now hopefully they can
learn from that and then sort of move forward in
a way that's the best prepare them for other situations.
First and foremost is the Broncos this weekend.

Speaker 2 (07:28):
Yeah, we'll look forward to that. You're we're still going back.
I'm sorry, Boom, back to the storm. Do they overthink it?
Do they think too much about that that smudge over
top of them with this team, because this is a
team that went into that game three on the bounce.
A couple of those people didn't think they would win.
They had essentially a very fit team. They're missing a
couple of key players, but everything was there for them

(07:50):
to do well. Overthinking it, putting too much into it,
because that first half they just got blown off the park.

Speaker 9 (07:56):
So I reckon, there's your first mistake is that it's
not necessarily what the Warriors are thinking of what the
Warriors want to do. Sometimes it's what the opposition are
I allow you to do great things. That Craig Dullomy's
very good at is being able to look at his
opposition and be able to identify their strengths and then
he tries to really limit the opportunities or the impact

(08:16):
on the game that those strengths have, and then obviously
really push the strengths that you know, the Storm have.
And whenever they did really well against us when I
was playing, and I've seen it in the last few
years as well, as they start very well and when
they get to a good start, they're very good leaders,
and once they get to a lead, then it's really
hard to sort of chase them down. So yeah, the

(08:38):
start was obviously really important. As soon as they do
that and they get into you know, the boys head
a bit. It's been a while since the Warriors of
One in Melbourne, so then you know whether that starts
to come more to the front of front of mind
that you've probably talked about that during the week of
let's you know, let's change this, let's change this sort
of rotation that we've got at the moment and try

(09:00):
and turn that around so that we get a win
in Melbourne against the Storm. But yeah, sometimes that can
work against you when you you're under fire, things aren't
going your way, have a few injuries or like with
Fish coming off early, not ideal, and you know a
few other things go away, sorry go against you are
not ideal when you're in a situation like a team.

(09:21):
The Storm are playing really well at the moment, pretty
strong side they've got, and particularly at home, they're pretty
hard to beat. So you put all those together and
you don't always look at yourselves and say, well, you know,
it's all of our fault and there's other contributing factors
when you're playing a team sport, and sometimes your position's
got a bit to play in how you play.

Speaker 2 (09:39):
No choice but to change the lineup. Suspension to rock
O Berry, which is the real shame, but so it is.
There's the laws, and then of course some injuries to
a couple of the key players, so there's been a
number of changes in twisted position in the lineup. First up,
your thoughts on not having Fish, But it looks like
as peck injury is not as bad as we think

(10:03):
it as and you means to me, I fear that
for Tahari's not being around Penrith, it's probably been a
big reason they've collapsed as well, So he's a key
part to not be there.

Speaker 9 (10:13):
Steve, Yeah, and that's one of the big things I thought,
Whereas did well with obviously buying Fish, bringing him over
and the money that he's got and the way that
he goes about his work and the impact he can
have one of those young forwards that are coming through
the club, as well as the rest of his teammates.
And I think, you know, other than probably Game one

(10:34):
where it wasn't just Fish, the whole team sort of
struggled over in Vegas, I think, you know, they've really
found sort of a little bit more of their groove
and how it's going to work. Yeah, the weekend was disappointing,
but didn't go to worry his way, and that happens
two at times. Now it's going to be who's going
to stand up, you know, who's going to take over
that role for however long Fish is out for, he'll

(10:56):
still play a role at training and in the preparation
of the game. But as you say, fingers crossed, the
injury isn't as bad as what first thought, and he's
back sooner than later. But that's the other great thing
made about the NRL and about regular league, about sport
is you know, one disappointment for one person use another
person opportunity and there's a highly young fellows there at
the Warriors that are looking for an opportunity and a

(11:18):
few of them are getting that this weekend, So the
Outs their opportunity to front up and against the Broncos
team that you know, I have had some really good
games this year and then a bit of the Warriors
had some disappointing games this year. So huge game for
both clubs. But yeah, there's a bit of unknown there
for the Warriors, which will be a bit worrying, I
reckon for the Bronx coming over and not really knowing
what they get facing up against. So yeah, they probably

(11:40):
can't come into it the way they might have wanted
to knowing. You know, there's no chance. No Roger, no Fish,
sort of some of those regular faces aren't there that
they normally be used to playing against.

Speaker 2 (11:52):
They've got some tweaks because of that. Jackson Ford is
up the front now you've had some changes. It means
Capball has gone on to the centers and this potential
superstartion where it lay this on them because it's probably
going to curse them. Al gets his first start.

Speaker 9 (12:10):
Yeah, Jackson going into the front row, mate, I don't
think that's a bad thing. I think the more Jackson's
involved in the game, the better he plays so front
row because that sort of happened to me. I was
a back rower and then m coach Steve Folk assuming
in the front row and it was the best thing
that happened in my footy degree. So I think like
Jackson's played there before, and he's a work great man.

(12:32):
You know, he loves to getting his hands on the foot,
he loves being defensive, plays a big role on the team.
So I think that's going to be a positive for
the team. You know, with Kurt Goana Sena, he's done
that at origin level, very good defensively with the ball.
He can certainly do things that other players can't do,
and he's going to be really good for that bad

(12:52):
edge that he's on defensively. So I'm not sure who
he's marking, whether it's Katoni or Shivasaki, I'm not sure
which side he's on, but doesn't really matter. I mean,
that's just going to give them a little bit more
settled sort of experience on an edge. And then Lea, Yeah,
there's been a lot of talk about him for a
long time and he's going to get a chance to

(13:13):
go out and just be him.

Speaker 2 (13:14):
Mate.

Speaker 9 (13:14):
At the end of the day, that's all we want
as fans and supporters of the Worries is for him
to go and do what he's been doing. Because tries
to be someone else, that's when he's going to bring
himself undone. Not to be nervous or be more excited
than nervous, because you can waste a lot of energy
being nervous, whereas being excited. I think that's more of
a better positive way to put it, and you should be.

(13:36):
If you're not excited and a bit nervous, then yeah,
obviously you're not doing the right thing. You should be
because it's exciting for you. You've been waiting a long
time for it, and you want to prove yourself in
the big league.

Speaker 2 (13:49):
Frank Endercott's come out and see the fifth tackle option
hasn't been great, and he also says that probably we
haven't got the pace that we need. Is there some
truisms in there steam?

Speaker 9 (14:05):
Yeah, mate, you know, it's a really interesting comment and
Frank's definitely got the kudos to be able to say
whatever he thinks. I haven't seen a whole lot of
the Warriors games this year, but one of the things
that I have noticed in a lot of the games
is when you know those fifth tackle options, if you're
really tight on the try line to try and score,

(14:27):
that can be detrimental to attacking team. That's why a
lot of teams give the sixty gal away on the
tryline because or the short dropout and all that. I mean,
worst case scenario, the opposition get the ball and you're
defending on your trialline. You don't have to go as far,
you don't get worn out as much. You can get
up off the line really quickly. Put pressure on all

(14:47):
of those type of things. So you know, sort of
thirty out to sort of fifteen meters out from the
triyline is probably your ideal attacking zone anywhere further out
from there, and you definitely do need speed and the
skill and obviously a tactic to try and undo some
of the defense patterns that are on the lead. But yeah,
I think obviously the middle needs to be getting that

(15:09):
go forward to try and get that field position in
your back five play big role coming out of trouble.
If the boys are doing that, then they'll put themselves
into a position and then all you do is you
backyard you know your halves or whoever's doing the kicking
to come up with the right decisions or right tactics,
execute it correctly, and then whenever there's a ball put

(15:30):
in the air, just making sure you're competing for it.
I get really frustrated, whether it's the Warriors, the Bulldogs
or any other team in the comp if there's no
one competing for the ball in the air. I always
used to think, what do you do to the opposition?
You do what you don't like being done to you.
And if I was a fullback, I wouldn't like someone
jumping up and trying to catch the ball in front
of me. So that's what you should do every single

(15:52):
time I reckon And you see a lot of teams
score tries and get errors that do that. So they're
just extra effort areas that any team can do. But
certainly be good if the Warriors we're able to bring
that type of footy this weekend.

Speaker 2 (16:07):
Steve Price, if I was a fullback, Hey, Steve Price, there,
ex Warriors skipper. I've seen him make a run that

(16:28):
looked like he might have been a winger or a fullback.
I know that's probably stretching it a weebit. The smile
on his face was can never forget it? Steve there
talking about the wars. Now, I was embarrassing over the weekend.
It was it was really hard to support, was really
hard to watch. Had to look at it. If you're

(16:49):
a huge fan or an egypt you want to watch
the whole game hoping something would change, said the host,
putting his hand up high. I did. I persevered right
the way through thinking something's got to turn here?

Speaker 10 (17:07):
Didn't.

Speaker 2 (17:08):
Did it freak me out? Did I get all bitter
and twisted and dark over it? Now it's settled on this.
Sure there's some form of not a curse. I don't
believe in there, but there's a shadow cast over the
Warriors by this Storm team. And that's what I said
to Steve. Are they are they overthinking this? They're not

(17:30):
coming with a clear head and exercise what they've practiced. Steve,
of course, while I love having him on, straightaway counted
back and said, we know you're wrong there for a start.
It's not about what they did. Sometimes it's about what
the opposition let you do or not let you do.
You're taking to account the strength of the Melbourne Storm

(17:52):
and they know exactly what's going on with the wire
and they pick up for pieces. They did what they
wanted to do. They pushed their hand, they forced their hand,
applied the pressure, and the Warriors broke apart. The reason
I'm not too devastated by this because it's the NRL.

(18:14):
Sure it was the Melbourne Storm again. That can be annoying,
this repetition, But in this competition, teams smash other teams.
It happens, even great teams, even top eight teams, even
top four teams, even finalists. To look back at the
year and go, we got owned right there. See that

(18:35):
you can't win every game. You can't thrash everybody. It
doesn't work like in the eneral. The competition is too hard.
So I comforted myself with that and I'll stick by it.
There's some changes made for the wrecking and the Broncos

(18:55):
have got a stunning team jam Pat with Flash Harris
out the back. The Warriors can monster them up the front.
They can enforce their will upon the Broncos. Things change now.
This is a team that had a terrible start, three
gate games in the middle and then a shock of

(19:17):
last week. I'm not concerned. I'm not reading too much
into that Storm game. The shame that there was no
James Fisher, Harris or Fish seeing Kay not being available yet,
it's a bit of a blow. Roccoberry have hardly seen them,
but he got tagged by the judiciary and he's not

(19:38):
going to be there either. But the positives around this
Saturday night game, seeing Kahlasma, seeing the and this may
sound like a bit of a stretch. I know that
Frank Endercott's had a wee bit of a crack and
say that he knows a little more about League than
I do. The continued development of the six and seven,
and the longer they've gotten the saddle, the longer they've

(19:59):
got controlling and every now and then they're gonna get punched. Literally.
It's good for them, it's good for their game, will
build them, it'll make them a stronger team. Gate Wills
in the sense he's done that at origin time. Ford's
a good player. He comes up to playing proper like
happened to Steve Price. I'm not full of doom and

(20:21):
gloom around this. I see this as primarily being opportunity.
Now I might be completely cracked, and that's okay if
you think that I don't mind. Well, what other people
think of me is none of my business, right, But
do you think in January we read too much into

(20:41):
games like that when a team gets owned, not necessarily
just the Warriors, but there are a number of people
out there will love the NRL and they follow a
number of different teams, and Broncos and Saint George and
Newcastle like it, mates, every of it, all these different
teams they follow. Do you read too much into it
when your team gets smacked about? Is that really the

(21:05):
right thing to do? Is it more of an opportunity
than a disaster? Your calls please our eight hundred eighty
ten eighty. You can text the thoughts to nine two
ninety two, and of course you're standard to text charge
ZBZB if you want to get all alpha numerica on it,
But give us a call A one hundred eighty ten eighty.

(21:25):
Do you read too much into humpings in the NRL?
Maybe in sport in general, it's opportunity. I don't tell
me why I'm wrong. Your calls up next twenty eight
minutes after see them? No, tell me.

Speaker 1 (21:47):
You don't need for the TMO. We've got the breakdown
on Sports Talk call oh wait, News Talk said B.

Speaker 2 (22:03):
It's kind of like what doesn't kill you can only
make you the right, same kind of theory opportunity when
you get pumped to reevaluate, refocus, move up, or you
could sit there and you could cry and let your
wounds and weep and go to bed forever. You know,

(22:23):
do that from time to time. But I think there
is opportunity in situations like this, and it does happen,
especially in the NRL, you get hammered. I think we
read sometimes too much. If it happens week after week
after week, sure you can read whatever you want into it,
but not this team. And I have the feeling I

(22:45):
don't know that there would have wee bit about as well.
We're going really well, we're in a three run. They've
got to beat them. Eventually, we're on a street. We
got to do it. A warmth that blow up in
their face. Like I don't know, I'm not a player,
but hey, aln what have you got for us?

Speaker 10 (22:59):
Yes, could even go see. I watched that game. The
Melbourne Storm defense initially was amazing. The Warriors were very
average on attack and the Storm defended them, and then
it seemed like the Storm got the ball sort of
in their half and they just slaughtered us in the

(23:20):
outside backs. Our backs were like rabbits and headlights. They
had no answer and they couldn't stop them.

Speaker 2 (23:30):
They did, they give up ellment. Was there a periods
in that first hove that you don't even trying? It's
the worst thing you can possibly say to an athlete
that you're not trying. Did you get any sense of
that at all?

Speaker 10 (23:42):
Well, maybe the captain should have said, look, listen, guys,
wait he could.

Speaker 2 (23:45):
Could he because he was off? What are you off?
In the tenth minute? I think didn't fish.

Speaker 10 (23:50):
Yeah, but I think you know what the Warriors need
to do. They've got a good board pack and the
outside backs are just not in the class of the
storm and they got absolutely destroyed by outside pace, So
you know they should have I don't know. It was embarrassing, Darcy,
but as you say, you know, next week to another game.

(24:14):
But that was a hiding.

Speaker 2 (24:16):
Terrible and Alan, thanks for bringing up and telling us
that because it was a hiding. I'm just I can't
be so downcast. I mean, Frank Endercot Big Lead podcast.
They even't got the pace as Elk Curtain. Fantastic scarved
Stogy smoking arm under the crossby Wellingtonian from back in

(24:36):
the day at Athletic Park. Well, he's got gas, is
what he used to say about a good rugby. He
can't teach that. Maybe the out and out speed isn't there,
but surely cunning as a reasonable replacement for that, you
would think, wouldn't you. O eight one hundred and eighty
ten eighty Reading too much into a one off thrashing

(24:59):
and you can't reapply that. It's not necessarily about rubber League,
bit rugby union, any longish competition where the teams have
got to play weekend week out, weekend week out.

Speaker 7 (25:13):
For months.

Speaker 2 (25:16):
EPL. Even I don't watch a lot of EPL. If
any you may have an experience there. Is it dangerous
to read too much into a one off shellacking. Choose opportunity? Okay,
we learn from this, And I said that I think

(25:36):
looking at the six and seven combination yet there's still
not completely well well jilled. But I think you learn
a lot more out of a loss than you do
out of a victory. That's what I'm looking forward to
in this team. O eight one hundred and eighty ten
eighty Reading too much into one sided hammerings. If you're

(25:57):
a Storm fan, you can bring up and laugh at
me like Nowson go to the text line gam and
George said, on this station, they said this to me.
He actually, they don't need to buy a player from overseas,
And since then all I've heard is they're trying to
buy another player. They've got players come from beneath. I

(26:19):
don't know who you'd buy next, Darcy Tan, a boy
needs to start at seven for the Worries. He was
pretty good at the Titans, Thanks Steve.

Speaker 9 (26:31):
Look.

Speaker 2 (26:32):
I like the look of to mighty Martin last year.
I thought he was superb and I thought he would
make his way into the hears. But he hasn't carried
any favor of the coaching staff. We've got a six
and seven, had a terrible first game, didn't get dropped.
Slowly building, they've stumbled, they dropped the ball away, but
it hasn't been ideal. But I don't think you guess
them for that. You've got to give them time to build.

(26:53):
But how long?

Speaker 9 (26:54):
Right now?

Speaker 2 (26:57):
The texts said, didn't the Storm thrash manly the week before?
Give them a break? What I'm saying, it's not a
bad thing. It's awful. I'd rather not watch my It
takes takes a windown yourselves. It deflates you somewhat when
you sit down all keen as muster with a nice
cup of Earl Gray. It's euphemism and watch and then

(27:20):
suddenly you're on the wrong end of a thrashing. It
does make it hard to watch, but it happens, and
the good teams bounce back from that, they learn from it. Okay,
what do we do wrong now? And this is where
Andrew Webster starts earning his money, goes in there and
packs it apart, and there's a lot made of winning

(27:43):
the second half. But the game was dead then, so
didn't for me make any difference. I suppose what bit
me around that is I've got a few friends who
whatever to jet clear. If someone's just texting, I don't know,
he's still hanging around somewhere. And on that the cleary

(28:05):
thing they Steven touched on.

Speaker 1 (28:08):
I think.

Speaker 2 (28:12):
How much Fisher Harris held together that Peenriouth team and
what kind of strife through and right now that he's gone,
that is interesting in itself. Now, what gets me about
this is I got a lot of friends who watch sport.
A lot of friends who don't. The ones that do
know never to text me or message me or ring

(28:33):
me or anything about sport. Over the weekends, I'm watching
so many things. I got a lot on tape. Okay,
I can't watch a game and I know the result
just takes everything away from it from a fanboy. So
mate of mine texted me just before about halftime and said,

(28:56):
are you watching the game? Said no, one, picking my
daughter up from the ferry Wahaki Island. I'll watch it
when I get home. And the reply wast because that's
a crawel and unusual thing to do to a sports broadcast.
It's gonna made it perfectly clear. If you do that again,
your phone number is gone. I'll never answer the phone again.

(29:17):
And it does work. Why does that work? Because I
did it to a guy called Devlin at to work
with years ago. Once, twice, third time you're out, your
social feed's gone. I've cut your phone number off. I
don't want a bar off it. So that that made
it made it difficult. But see the fool that I am,
or what's the first half anyway, thinking that maybe maybe

(29:39):
she's wrong and she wasn't, or maybe the second half
got better, which of course it didn't, but I can
see goodness in this. This is news Talks. It be
on sports talk and muzz stop calling me Piney. I'm
never gonna answer your calls again. My name is Darcy It.

(29:59):
It's twenty one minutes away from eight o'clock. Mike Evanna
Caloney Ruse, captain of the Blues Black Verned. She joins
us soon. Let's talk about the Cross Channel final. It's
coming up tomorrow night at five past seven over in
North Harbor. The warretars versus the Blues the way version.

Speaker 3 (30:22):
If you will, this is news Talk zby.

Speaker 8 (30:38):
You can see seventeen minutes the eighth fresh off of
the Herald Wow, half an hour or so ago. Litten
of this all Blacks Santa Rico Yuanne Is followed Jordi
Barrett to the Irish Club. Leinster Napier has written this

(31:00):
story up rather large. Is going to join Leinster and
as Liam put it, at team to reverse the rare
realm from villain to world class recruit. Because you remember
last World Cup they got himself into a bit of

(31:21):
grief by trolling one of the Irish at a right
crack at Sexton after the All Blacks beat up on
Ireland and they went out on the quarter final.

Speaker 2 (31:33):
Again, again, again again. So he's now going It's not
he's leaving for the money. It's part of a sabbatical experience.

Speaker 9 (31:44):
He said.

Speaker 2 (31:44):
He's going over to play for an iconic team, experience
something different and it's a sabbatical break. He'd be ready
to rot second half of twenty twenty six and then
locked in with his Blues brothers, so he said. So
that's the latest news. Yowani has disappear Burger, which gives

(32:07):
room for other players. I supposed to take a spot,
and I know that the debate and the argument around
what he brings to the center role will always rage.
Where there is a natural born center, whether that matters.
Can he hold that jersey? And by the looks of
it he can. All Black coaches keep packing him in there.

(32:31):
AnyWho this go to text David, thank you. I text
you two days about our seper rugby teams having no
pace out wide Australia will hammer. The All Blacks Warriors
have the same problem. And I don't know why it
is is that the speed merchants haven't been identified. It

(32:52):
would they just rather run on a straight line than
some lecra as opposed to actually get tackled. No idea,
but it may be an issue right across here. So
Rico's gone saying that the Blue soid'll they'll they'll miss
him next year, but he will return to his Zeld
mentally refreshed and ready to go. I'm still fascinated by

(33:15):
the fact that you're calling a sabbatical. It's not a sabbatical.
You're going to the other side of the world to
keep beaten senseless by a whole lot of irishmen playing rugby.
This is not a rest. You come back refreshed mentally.
You'll come back in a sling. It's not a sabbatical.

(33:36):
It's a sabbatical. You go and do something else. You
go and not be a rugby place. It's not why
you're not getting paid enough. They got to change that.
It's not a sabbatical. You want a sabbatical, go and
sit on Easter Island. You know, I just don't go
and play rugby. That's not a break from the game.
That is the game.

Speaker 8 (33:55):
Can we rename it?

Speaker 2 (33:56):
Going out on Loandarcy.

Speaker 1 (33:59):
I mean, that's what they do in the football isn't it.

Speaker 2 (34:00):
They go out on loan, Yeah, but they still play. Yeah,
we don't need it well going out on loan. But
then while they but why will we give you a
break when you want to go on, when you want
to go and play for someone else and more money
and claim you need a mental refresher you have there
when you retire. That's another talk back talking for another

(34:20):
story coming up next. May Roos joins us Mike Evan Colony.
To be precise, there is the news Talk b.

Speaker 1 (34:29):
News Talk said.

Speaker 2 (34:37):
Eleven minutes eight. The Blues women's team won Super OPI.
They defended their title on Saturday night against the Marauders
from down South in the form of Matatu. Great game,
so much fun to watch, and my team lost, but

(34:58):
I enjoyed every second. We're joined now by the captain
of the Blues that women name is Mikey. She joins us. Now,
welcome to the show, Maya.

Speaker 7 (35:09):
Thank you for having me, Darcy Year. We're so proud
of how our team put up in that game.

Speaker 5 (35:15):
It was to the last minute, fourteen on the field,
but yeah, I guess we just shared our connection and
our heart in those minutes and it took us through
to the end.

Speaker 2 (35:26):
What were you most proud of when you look right
across the entirety of the game, Is there any aspect
that stood out that we can we can raise a
flag on that one and use that for this Warritarz game.

Speaker 7 (35:39):
I think in the first half we had a bit
of a problem with our discipline, but when we needed
it to be good, it was great. And so we
want to take good discipline into this game.

Speaker 2 (35:51):
And you, as the captain, you stand over them in
the huddle and yell at them all. I mean, how
do you deal with the discipline of players, because it's
a difficult thing to address, isn't it. I'm not quite
sure how your teammates respond to whatever you say. But
what process do you have to go weak?

Speaker 7 (36:08):
Yeah, so we have calls that we do to like
when we need a chill, so if that's stopping the
offwards or stopping trying to attack the ruck. So I
actually don't need to say much. We go to our
d leaders are attacking leaders, and they just give like
two really simple messages that we can all follow, and
then we know that we need to get our discipline

(36:30):
right with those two things.

Speaker 2 (36:33):
To be honest, you know where I come from. I
was thinking March to two are going to roll you,
but you didn't give up. I think from my aspect,
that's the thing you should be most proud about. Your
goal line d and the fact you just did not
give up.

Speaker 7 (36:46):
Yeah, i'd agree. We Yeah, it was all heart on
the line and I'm very proud of that.

Speaker 2 (36:54):
When you look at the Warrtas coming out tomorrow and
it's hello, what are they to the party? Because you've
played this team before. You played them right at the
start of the year in preseason, didn't you.

Speaker 7 (37:13):
M h, Yeah, they have some very physical forwards who
are going to come out and try to hit us again.
She they did that in the preseason. But then I
think one of their superpowers are there back three. They
are crazy, they are fit, they are fast, they are strong,
and so just being able to combat them will be

(37:34):
a challenge for us tomorrow.

Speaker 2 (37:36):
I didn't hold on though. You look at what you've
gotten the back three. It's pretty handy yourself, look at.

Speaker 4 (37:44):
All.

Speaker 2 (37:46):
And we've got to talk about that because I heard
Braxton Simon McGee yesterday talking about that, intercepting about what
she thought and she actually pouched it and disappeared. That
was astonishing for mine. I was like, what a tiny player.
There's no way she's going to be able to get
to the end of all there she goes, she just
gone straight by. That's altitude player, and she's kept on

(38:08):
going that that intensity is something else. Well, what can
you tell us about the way she plays the game,
because she's a superstar in the making.

Speaker 7 (38:16):
Yeah, she plays so free. She works really hard. She
has worked really hard for so many years already of
her life and she's on the eighteen. Her knowledge of
the game is crazy. Her like Rugby IQ for such
a young girl is really amazing. She has things to
say when they need to be said in itm huddles

(38:39):
and I think that's quite cool to see from such
a young player. But yeah, when she gets on the field,
she knows that she's done the work and so she
just plays what's in front of her and trusts that
what she has is great and she is great.

Speaker 2 (38:54):
It says a lot about the environment, about the atmosphere
within the team that a young player feels that she
can speak up when required.

Speaker 7 (39:03):
Yeah, I'd like to think so. Our values, one of
them is freedom and connection, and I think with those
two working together, we have this space for people to
say whatever they want to say and feel comfortable doing so.

Speaker 2 (39:17):
My another standout over the world. I mean Becaucolo was
quite extraordinary as well. But Porscha Woodman, what do they
feed that lady?

Speaker 7 (39:29):
I mean, why she She's a goat. That's that's all
I got to say about Porsche. She's a goat. She's
a big player who stands up in big moments, and
she's been doing that for her whole career. And we
are just so blessed to have her in it team
this season.

Speaker 2 (39:46):
When you spend time with her, and I expect Caitlin
and Braxon and a number of other younger players would
be flocking to her to get some advice. I mean,
is she free with with knowledge and how she responds
and also in partnership with that, does she take information
from other players? She's not too big that she learn.

Speaker 7 (40:07):
Still not at all, sorry, not all to the too
big She like she is the best learner. I think
that's what I'm noticed. First. I had the opportunity to
play with her in the World Cup a few years ago,
and she is just so hungry to learn and come
into the Blues environment again, she's been exactly the same.
She's very collaborative. She wants to learn, and she wants

(40:29):
to give as much that she can to our younger
girls in the team. We have like buddy meetings, and
so she's always talking to her buddy about what they
can do better, how they can work together, and I
don't know, just different pictures that they see around the
park so that they can exploit those when we play.
And so it's really special to see how much she
loves to give back to the game, but how much

(40:49):
she also still loves to learn.

Speaker 2 (40:51):
Maya tell us about playing at Eden part the prime
game Saturday night, five past seven. It's difficult to suppress
the thrill that you feel there and actually focus on
what's happening.

Speaker 7 (41:03):
I love it. It's always an occasion to play and park,
just to play under the lights. Seven to five Primetime
was real special. We're so happy that we were able
to get so many viewers on TV that we've seen.
We had like four hundred and five thousand, and that's
really cool to have that many viewers for women's rugby game.
We wish more people were in the standstill.

Speaker 1 (41:25):
Forget the riff's call, you make a call on eight
Sports Talk on your home of sport, US Talk.

Speaker 2 (41:32):
SIP five past seven tomorrow and North Harber Stadium. The
waratas the Women and the Blues. The Women take Trans
Tasman Battle up there at the top. All right, listen
to this. A sabbatical is a rest or, a break

(41:53):
from work, an extended period of time intentionally spent on
something that's.

Speaker 11 (41:59):
Not your routine job. Stop calling this sabbatical. It's not
a sabbatical. He's off the stuffer's piggybank with.

Speaker 2 (42:13):
Is it punts in Ireland? Is it the Irish currency?
You're are they? You are right? That's right. They didn't
run off, No they did. Rat It doesn't matter. It's
not a sabbatical. It's not a sabbet. You're greedy. Thank you,
Nce Middlesech Marco Slasher up next stop it.
