(00:00):
This week on the Art of Improvement, I'll be speaking with Duncan Cork.
He's president of BFT. BFT standsfor Body Fit Training. It's a revolutionary
fitness concept taking the world by storm. I can't wait for you to join
us. My conversation with Duncan Corkis coming up next on the Art of
Improvement. Thank you so much forlistening to the Art of Improvement. I'm
(00:27):
Karen Klaus and my guest today isDuncan Cork. He's the president of BFT.
BFTS is Body Fitness Training and whenI started reading about it, Oh,
thank you so much, very much, Duncan for taking the time today
to talk to me. It's anabsolute pleasure. And yes, joining you
(00:48):
here from Bodyfit Training's headquarters. SoI'm honored to be on the podcast.
Well where are you anyway? We'rebased in southern California. Okay, okay,
great. Well for starters, BFTis just about it everywhere. I
was looking at different locations and Iwant to ask you definitely about franchising and
(01:11):
if that's even a possibility later onafter we talk. But I mean DFT
is one of those things where Ithink we before we started recording. I
told you, there are so manythings about it that would be so intimidating
to me. One, I loveto work out, but when I read
about an elite, elite group ofcoaches that will transform your body, your
(01:34):
mind, and your life, I'mlike, I don't know if I'd be
able to do that. I knowthat sounds crazy, but it's something that
everybody wants. But what is itthat blocks a lot of people from going
forward to say, you know whatI'm all in? Yes, I mean
the coaches are elite, but thetraining is very much accessible to everybody.
(01:57):
And that's what we call of likedto encourage, and fitness is a journey,
it's never really a destination. Soyou know, the intimidation factor is
very real, but we kind ofovercome that by being a very welcoming brand.
It's an extremely inclusive environment to trainin, which is which is incredible.
You could have, you know, somebody that's you know, twenty five
(02:22):
and an x D one athlete trainingright next to somebody that's fifty five,
and you know, the coaches arevery well versed in making those kind of
modifications and having that that much ofa range of a community. Most of
our Most of our members are youknow, somewhere between the ages of thirty
(02:43):
and forty five. But you know, we've we welcome everybody and at any
point in their their fitness journey. That's very exciting. Every time I have
talked to somebody that's in the fitnessworld, I always wonder how they got
there because I used to. Imean, I am so embarrassed to say
(03:04):
it. I used to be oneof those persons that would go to the
gym, you know, six daysa week, a couple of hours a
day because my lifestyle, uh wasopen to that schedule. And things have
changed in you know, life,it gets crazy. But I mean,
is that what happened to you?Or are you just like in love with
working out and suddenly you became thepresident of b f T. Well you
(03:29):
know the story. The story cango back very far if we wanted it
two But I remember the first transformativeexperience that that I had in fitness because
I went to a regular gym justlike a lot of people do, and
attended when and when I felt likeit, and you know, I never
really saw results. I always feltokay about going to the gym, and
(03:53):
it was it was fun these arethe sort of big box, classic big
box gyms. But it wasn't untilI was was deep into my entrepreneurial journey
in New York that one of myadvisors said to me, come and come
and work out at at CrossFit.And I had not really heard too much
about CrossFit, but oh my word, the first the first class that I
(04:15):
did there was I realized how howwrap it how very unfit? I actually
was, Yeah, I remember that. Then I got into that. Yeah,
it was that. That was amoment of awakening. And uh and
then the coaches, you know, were were very kind and I knew one
of the coaches there and they tookme through a journey that that started my
(04:41):
kind of interested understanding in what boutiquefitness actually is. Many years later,
I got asked to to to joinforty five Training, but that was more
based on my experience in marketing,so my my career pods and and and
kind of understanding of fitness and theresults that you can get from you know,
(05:04):
regular programmed fitness business classes in thebatique space. Uh. It really
it really kind of came together withmy background at forty five. So that's
that's how I kind of got intofitness franchising specifically. It started with marketing
and you know, my my understandingthat this product that that that we're that
(05:30):
we're creating now, particularly at bfT, it really helps people and it
really actually it makes a difference topeople's lives in a in a way that
it's made a difference to my life. It's funny because when when a person
is in shape and uh and they'retoned and they're working out on a regular
(05:54):
basis, it really does change yourentire attitude. And you say, you
know, the whole saying with BFTis, you know, transform your body,
your mind and your life. Butfor someone that has never worked out,
it's kind of hard to believe.I mean, how can you convince
somebody that they really are not onlytransforming their body, but their mind and
(06:17):
their entire life, which I canattest to it does happen. Yeah,
I think that the message really isis that it's a journey, and to
embark on a journey, it takesthat first step, and the moment you
(06:38):
get into that and into that rhythm, the discipline starts to kind of take
care of itself because you instantly startto feel the gratification, the endorphins,
and it's a perpetual, positive reinforcingaction that you can take day in,
(07:00):
day out, but it always startswith that first step. And you know,
at bf T we're very welcoming andinclusive community, so you know,
it's it's it's one of those placesthat you can start that journey in a
very kind of easy fashion, andthat's why we encourage everybody just to sign
up. Yes, okay, sothis is the next question. How do
(07:24):
you sign up? How do youfind out if there is a bf T
near you? Well, the bestthing would be to go to bodyfit Training
dot Com and we've got a studiofinder there in North America. We've got
we've got over three hundred studios aroundthe world, so a few the majority
of them are in Australia, NewZealand and Singapore, but we've we're expanding
(07:46):
quite rapidly here in the United Statesin North America, so you know there
will be most of the studios thatare coming online end of this year and
next year are are starting to gooutside of the main metropolitan areas. But
you know, we're we've got afew that are opening. I think that
(08:07):
we'll we'll be opening up our fortiethrelatively soon in North America. That's incredible.
Well, obviously you're not from America, so can you tell me how
you got here to America? Andwhere are you from? I mean,
I keep on thinking Australian or whereare you from? Someone wants asked me
if I came here by ship?Yeah? Right, food here from London
(08:33):
I was living in I was livingin London for the ten years prior to
my time in the United States, and then before then it was South Africa.
But okay, that's where I was. I was born in Town and
I spent the first twenty years ofmy life there, and my twenties were
(08:54):
all spent in London and Europe.I did a short spent at the beginning
of in Singapore actually, where Iwas working at Sachi and Sachi Advertising,
which was which was great. Butyeah, then I came to America in
two thousand and nine and have beenhappily living here ever since. Started out
(09:15):
in New York and then moved toLos Angeles. Nice. And so would
you say, I mean, notthat it matters, but would you say
you've been all over the world. Is there a different attitude in places that
are not the United States. Whenit comes to body fitness, I would
(09:35):
I would say there's there's a commonalitymore more so than there is a radical
kind of difference. I mean, there are pockets of the world that I
would say, you know, culturallyemphasize it a little bit more. And
you know, certainly Australia, there'sa lot of fitness concepts that are born
(09:56):
out of Australia because of the generalinterest in in the Australian culture for sort
of fitness solutions. Right. Icome from South Africa, where fitness is
not as as much of a priority. It's a it's it's more of a
smaller market. But in a placelike Australia, everybody loves to to to
(10:16):
be fit and exercise and workout. And in the United States there's there's plenty
uh and and North America and youknow, Toronto, Vancouver, there's there's
a huge fitness communities and people lovebeing outdoors and and this this kind of
style of training really helps you,you know, enjoy your life a lot
(10:37):
more like whether it's just day today or if you're if you're out there,
you know, wanting to go hikingor or do something a little bit
more challenging. Having this kind ofstrength training basis that's that's your your regular
kind of training rout routine really improvesthe quality of all experiences that you can
have across your across your life.So if you just started listening. Duncan
(11:01):
cork is President of b FT BodyfitTraining. I don't I kind of didn't
want to bring this up, butI really have to, I think because
all I ever read about in socialmedia, you know, online about celebrities
these days is the before and afterpictures and the before ozempic or whatever the
(11:28):
drug is after ozempic, And peoplethat are not celebrities are now taking up
this medication, which I believe usedto be solely for diabetes. So everybody,
all I can say is, youknow, sure everybody wants that magic
(11:48):
pills shot or whatever to get thin. But if I don't know, I
always feel like if you're not workingout, or if you're not on a
fit this plan for life, thingsmay not stay that way for very long.
Well, I'd say that it's itcomes down to building great habits for
(12:11):
yourself and having this sort of thediscipline and the cadence and building the room
in your daily routine in order toyou know, service this this part of
your life. Right, You've gotone body that that that you're you're working
with for for your time on thisearth, and uh, you've got to
maintain it just like you would acar or or you know, some sort
(12:33):
of vehicle that you that you needto to move around in. Right.
And I would I would say thatyou know, we've we've exponential just acquired
Lindora, which is which is abrand that that specializes in in that world.
Uh. But uh and and withwith great results for for a lot
(12:54):
of people. But there is nothere is no substitute I would say for
a very good routine, a goodhealthy routine and a healthy mindset and approach
to this part of of of one'slife. And you know, I think
that that the intimidation factor is isyou look at some of these journeys and
(13:15):
you think, you know, thebefore and after photos, Yes they're they're
while these results are are are incredible, but uh, the you know,
mentally, the amount of effort thatthat people that are kind of stuck would
look at an after photo and justa wow, that that looks like a
lot of hard work. But truthfully, the work is just showing up.
(13:39):
Work is is building you know, the habit to to to do it,
and it's and it's not that badover time. You know, at b
f T, the progressive results thatthat that we see are are rapid and
long lasting because it's you know itwe make it really fun. It's about
you know, the community. That'sthat's that's in the GS. The programming
(14:01):
is really interesting because it's never it'snever boring, it's never the same,
it's never repetitive. And you knowthe way that we design the workouts over
longer periods of time, you know, keep keep your engaged and keep you
interested, and you know, inevitablyyour body starts changing and moving moving better
(14:22):
and you start feeling better. Andthat's that's sort of that that reassurance that
that you kind of give yourself thatoh, this is working, and so
I'm going to I'm going to stickaround. Right. Our members, our
members on average are attending classes fourto five times a week. I saw
that, which is which is reallywhich is really different. Right, It's
not just show up in a classand have have fun and then you know
(14:46):
you never kind of think about itagain. This is people's as part of
everyone's weekly routine. They go infor fifty minutes, they cross your workout,
they feel great, and then theycome and do it again the next
day and it's you know, forour fittest members, it's almost like brushing
my teeth, right, this isjust part of their part of their routine.
That is exciting news. And becausebecause this is such a growing field,
(15:13):
I was going to ask you,our franchise is available for body fit
training. Yes, we've we've soldyou know, several hundred across North America,
several hundred territories already, but youknow there is plenty of availability,
and yeah, I would just getin touch with us if you're if you're
(15:37):
interested in owning one of these andbeing part of the community. So one
thing I want to know though,so say I am a person that is
interested in a franchise, but maybeI don't know, maybe I am not
a person that works out as much. I mean, is there would you
(15:58):
think that somebody that is interested inworking out? Or I mean, like
what can what can you picture asuccessful franchise be like when you go into
that business? Do you mean asa franchise owner? Yes, yes,
well you know, our best franchiseesand franchise partners are ones that have a
(16:22):
passion for for the modality and onesthat have a passion for for building communities.
You know, it's a it's avery it's a very important component that
a successful franchise partner can attract acommunity of like minded people within their four
walls. You know, we wedo create a experience that is very what
(16:51):
we would call sticky, that peoplelike coming back to. But in the
end of the day, the it'sgoing to be up to the owner who
hires the right trainers and creates theright atmosphere within that space to you know,
not only keep people coming back formore, but also telling their friends
about it. Yes, and itbecomes this sort of micro community where you
(17:15):
know, people are sharing their journeys, their fitness journeys together and it's it's
it's very encouraging when you're when whenyou get a group of people together that
that are passionate about you know, strength and conditioning as as as we are.
Absolutely and before we wrap up here, I wanted to ask you because
(17:36):
I have never seen the inside ofa body fit training facility. I mean,
is it do you have different technology. Is it the equipment, is
it free ways, is it somethingwhere you'll be on a machine, so
somebody will kind of expect what they'regoing to see when they go in.
Yeah, it's a it's a combinationof all of those pieces of equipment that
(18:02):
that you mentioned. We have.We have a weight rack that you know,
we do squat racks and bench pressesin uh, you know, of
a variety of other rack based exercises. We have a running track, kettlebells,
bar bells, you know, mostlyanything that would would you would find
in the functioning you know, fitnessspace that that deals with with kind of
(18:26):
the strength and conditioning you know programthat most most athletes would would train using.
Right, So the equipment is thatthat is there is is the equipment
that you would expect in a veryhigh end athletic facility. So we have
we have a s drives which arewhich are sort of self powered, treadmills,
(18:48):
and rowing machines and and ski ergsuh and and some of that that
other kind of you know, cardiovascularequipment. But it is it's a combin
it's the combination that is really themost powerful thing. So when you arrive
in a b f T. Youwill see that we've got you know,
uh, televisions on the walls thatguide you through each workout that is happening
(19:11):
every day, so you're never reallyyou can kind of follow along throughout the
class just by having that sort ofvisual reference. So we we we like
to say that we are we aretechnology supported, but most of the coaching
is done by by the coaches andthat that are that are in the class
as well, and they will sortof direct you on form, they will
(19:33):
direct you on you know, themotivation, uh, and then take you
through those classes day in and dayout, so you know, it's a
it's a full it's a full experience, and it's a very guided experience.
So it's that's why it's it's quiteaccessible for everybody. Anyone can do it.
It's just a matter of showing upand and enjoying yourself. And I'd
(19:55):
advise everybody that that that's wanted togo into a b f T to enjoy
that first few classes and just takeit easy. You don't have to go
you know, crazy hard at everyexercise. Just slow down and enjoy yourself,
you know, get used to theenvironments and once you figured it out,
it's it's actually it's actually very it'sactually very fun. That's so funny
(20:19):
because there was a period of likea year or two when I wasn't working
out, and then when you goback in your mind remembers everything. But
if you do go too hard, just remember you won't come back for a
while because you won't be able towalk or brush your teeth. Well,
(20:41):
the enthusiasm, the enthusiasm is welcome, but we also we also know what
we're what we're doing, so ifwe if we see that over exertion,
we'll we'll advise, you know,to advise you on pace. That's an
important that's an important component. Well, that's fantastic. Well, I I
I'm very excited for you and yourgrowth. I guess you're the guy that's
(21:04):
in charge of the expansion and it'ssomething that people that have never experienced have
got to go experience because I trulybelieve that BFT is going to be one
of those things that I believe itcan transform your body, your mind,
and your life. I really appreciateyour time today, Duncan Kork, President
(21:26):
of BFT body Fit Training. Thankyou so much for talking to me today.
Thank you for having me,
