Speaker 1 (00:00):
Time to spend a few minutes with a great one. Hey,
Kentucky legend. His name is Dan Isle. The youngster work
in the farm fields of Illinois when a man named
Adolph Rupp came rolling by in an edsel, he said,
you had towhen how about you hop in here and
ride to an accident with me? Isn't that how it went?
Speaker 2 (00:18):
Dan? You forgot about the bag of money?
Speaker 1 (00:23):
Yeah, that's right.
Speaker 2 (00:25):
Hey, Terry, before we get started, I'm a little disappointed
Paul didn't tell it on President Kennedy's boxer shorts.
Speaker 1 (00:37):
Robert F. Kennedy Junior's wearing them right now for his
confirmation hearings. Wow, isn't that amazing?
Speaker 2 (00:45):
Dan?
Speaker 1 (00:45):
The way that Kennedy family turned on RFK Junior's like wow, He's.
Speaker 2 (00:50):
Like, yeah, well, you know, if you're not, if you're not,
you gotta get along. I guess right.
Speaker 1 (00:59):
But we all had that image of Camelot and they
all stick together. This is like the first time I've
ever seen where they're all like turned on this one guy. Well,
not on all of them, but I mean, it's it's
been fascinating. Firstly, the most Yeah, yeah, give us an
update on you guys, How are things going for you? Guys?
Speaker 2 (01:17):
Things are? Things are excellent? Terry. We're We're back in
Colorado four or five years there and in Louisville working
on the NBA to Loop project, and we live about
seven minutes from our son and about ten minutes from
our daughter. I took my three grandsons to a Nuggets
game last night. We're we're living the life, having a
(01:39):
good time.
Speaker 1 (01:40):
How are the Nuggets doing these days? I mean, is
it you know? You you played there, you coached there,
You've done it all. You've seen this franchise. What's the
health of it?
Speaker 2 (01:48):
You know, you just hit it right on the head.
When they're healthy, you know, Jamal Murray is didn't play
last night, of course, the UK stand out. He's been
in and out of the lineup and several others. If
they're completely healthy, they've got the best player in the
world in Nicola Jokish, and so if they could stay healthy,
(02:12):
I think they've got a nice run of another championship.
Speaker 1 (02:15):
Yeah, Nicola is something to watch. But Jamal Murray, he's
so charming, so lovable, and I see him on that
commercial about three thousand times a week where he's flipping
that ball in for whatever the company is. He's talking
about New Balance exactly, and he's you know, he's living
the life. So good for him. That's a great spot
to be. I did want to ask you about what
the Lakers did with the Mavericks picking up. I mean,
(02:40):
aren't the people in Dallas they're like that broke their hearts.
Speaker 2 (02:44):
I saw they were carrying a coffin to one of
the demonstrations. The Lakers are unbelievable terry. They they always
seem to get a legend and a real good player.
Now I know some of them. They drafted, They drafted
Magic Johnson. They made a trade for Kobe, but I
(03:07):
mean Kareem with someplace else they got him. Shaq with
someplace else they got him. They got Lebron Now they
got Luca. Uh. They never seemed to rebuild. They always
just to seem seem to reload. So we'll see how
that works out. They better get better and by day,
I mean the Nuggets, the Lakers, the Warriors, because there
(03:30):
are some outs teams out there in the West in
Golden excuse me, Oklahoma City and Memphis and Houston, so
they better they better start buckling up or these youngsters
are going to run over the top of them.
Speaker 1 (03:48):
There's no doubt about it. But I want to ask you,
as a coach, how do you put Lebron and Luca
on the court together. I mean, what's what's gonna happen?
Two guys that both think they should have the ball
the time.
Speaker 2 (04:01):
Yeah, it'll be real interesting to see how that how
that works out? Uh. I mean Lebron has always been
the lead dog and Luca has always been the lead dog.
I don't I don't see either one of them acquiescing
to the other ones. So it'll it'll be real interesting
(04:22):
to see how can and that situation works out. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (04:26):
He probably has to stand back and just kind of
let them work it out, don't you think.
Speaker 2 (04:30):
Yeah, yeah, exactly. And and you know, if they can,
if they can put their egos in check, which in
the NBA isn't always real easy for the sake of winning, Uh,
then I think they You know, I love Anthony Davis
of course, former UK player, But Anthony plays, He's terrific.
The problem is he just doesn't play that much. He's
(04:53):
he has a lot of injury history, and so, uh,
if they can put their egos aside, for the sake
of winning. I think I think this trade will work
out for the Lakers.
Speaker 1 (05:03):
And I hope the Mavericks fans aren't rude to ad
to Anthony because he you know, he said he was
hit by upside the head with a ton of bricks.
He didn't know this was coming up.
Speaker 2 (05:14):
Oh no. And you know, you always start to hear
stuff before you know. Some of it's reliable, some of
it's not, but it's always out there. There was nothing,
I mean, nobody. I think that the two general managers
and of course the ownership were the only people that
knew about this. They didn't talk to Lebron, they didn't
(05:37):
talk to anybody Irving or anybody in Dallas, and they
kept us under cloak and dagger the whole time.
Speaker 1 (05:46):
It's very odd. I just find it amazing still that
Lebron didn't know. It was just that that doesn't make
sense because it seems like he has the seat at
every table that anything the Lakers decide.
Speaker 2 (05:58):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, but supposedly he didn't, so I don't.
I don't know. It'll be interesting to see how it
all works out. But I'm like you, I hope, I
hope the Dallas fans. Don't take it out on Anthony.
He had nothing to do with it.
Speaker 1 (06:12):
No, no fantastic person. And last on the NBA, what
do they do about sagging ratings? They are these are
aging out guys, you know, not just Lebron. There's a
lot of other talents, Steph Curry, these other folks who
have been there a long time, Kadie, the ones that
are getting to the end of it. And you mentioned
that they're coming up. But what's the NBA have to
do to draw eyeballs in because they're their ratings are anemic?
Speaker 2 (06:36):
Yeah, And and isn't it unbelievable that it's that has
headed this direction? Uh when when they just signed the
biggest television contract in the history of the of the NBA.
But you know, I don't think it's so much a
comment on the NBA. I think it's a comment on
(06:58):
our society. It's you know, no nobody anymore like Sherry
and I can sit down on the couch and watch
two movies in a row. Our grand our grandkids can't
watch something continually for ten minutes.
Speaker 1 (07:15):
You know.
Speaker 2 (07:15):
It's it's all about highlights and it's all about strikes.
I think that that's more a commentary of our society
than it is what the NBA is doing.
Speaker 1 (07:26):
Yeah, they can't hang in long range on that front.
Tough all the way around. To be sure, we're speaking
of Danissel. He's the all time leading score at the
University of Kentucky. I love bringing that up. And you
didn't you you did three years?
Speaker 2 (07:43):
Yeah? Well, people, part is terry that it was established.
I mean, you know, I took a covered wagon to Lexington.
That's been a record for a long for a long
long time. I can't imagine that it lasted this long. Now.
Speaker 1 (08:00):
Well, and you know you you are an arms length
away from from us now. But you have to know, Dan,
last weekend was really odd weekends in the Commonwealth because
cal Perry came back with his Arkansas hogs, and I
think all of us ninety nine point nine percent thought, well,
they're going to beat the snot out of cal Perry.
(08:21):
But still, you know, and you saw what happened or
were you taken aback by all this?
Speaker 2 (08:28):
You know, I'm gonna say something that's not gonna sit
real relation. But I was terribly disappointed in the fact
that he got booed when he was introduced and the
former UK players got booed when they were introduced. I'd
like to think that we're classier than that. Terry. You
(08:48):
can say what you want to about Cal's coaching ability,
but I mean he did an awful lot of good
for the people of the Commonwealth, from Ernado's in western Kentucky,
the flooding and in eastern Kentucky and all of the
charitable things he did when he was in Lexington. I
was I was really disappointed in that. And you know, coach,
(09:12):
coach Cal hasn't forgotten how to coach. And he had
a whole week. They didn't have a midweek game that week.
He had a whole week to prepare for Kentucky. And
the question, I was surprised, but you give him a
week to prepare for a team, and I just thought
going into that game, it looked like Arkansas was better
(09:35):
prepared to.
Speaker 1 (09:35):
Me and the former UK players A due and z
were and DJ Wagner were brilliant. I mean they just
it took Wagner till the second half. And you're right,
the fans booed him every time he got stole in
their car or something. It was like, what is wrong here?
And then they ultimately walked away laughing. I'm sure that
flight home was pretty pretty much a party house.
Speaker 2 (09:58):
Yeah. I mean, I I saw part We watched everything
we could watch. We watched the pregame show and of
course the whole game. But I saw Cals saying to
him maybe on shoot around or a practice Friday, and
you can win in this building at something you'll remember
for the rest of their lives. So I'm sure that
(10:20):
they were all tickled on the way back to Fayetteville.
Speaker 1 (10:24):
Yeah, no doubt about it. And Pope's a great hire.
Everybody's thrilled with that. Obviously, they've had a couple of stumbles,
but I think everything's going to get corrected tomorrow versus
South Carolina, so they can put those fears away.
Speaker 2 (10:36):
Yeah. Yeah, And you know, it'd be nice if they
could to get Butler and curveback to play in again.
But no, I think you're right. I think it was
a great hire. Uh. He understands the history and the
importance of the team, and so no, I think in
the long run, Mark's going to be just fine down there.
Speaker 1 (10:59):
Well, Horace, it's great talking to you again. We'll talk
horses somewhere closer to the Derby events.
Speaker 2 (11:04):
That's all right. I want to tell you that I
hear your voice more frequently than you know how, because
you you do a Papa Murphy's commercial and it is
on my uh when I jump in the car. I've
always got it on the Country Western station. Yeah, and
(11:27):
they and I don't know if it's right, but I
hear your voice all the time. I do.
Speaker 1 (11:35):
I get texts from people around the country to go,
I heard you in Los Angeles, I heard you here
there whatever. It's just it's hilarious how people I don't
know how they recognize my weasel voice, but you do,
so thank you.
Speaker 2 (11:46):
No, it takes me back home.
Speaker 1 (11:50):
Terry dan issel great talking to you again, but we'll
see you soon.
Speaker 2 (11:54):
Have a great day. Dan.
Speaker 1 (11:56):
I just love picking his brain about basketball all the time.
In life, he's just one of the best of the
best people. He and Sherry met when they were kids,
they got married. They've just lived the idyllic life and
good on him. He worked hard on that NBA to
lose franchise. You can see that that's not happening so
but he's happily in retirement now and must be seventy
(12:19):
six years old doing great, so you'll see him around
here derby time, for sure. He can't stay away from
Kentucky for very long. Back in a minute,
