(00:00):
Now live from Churchill Downs all theexcitement and thrills of America's greatest turf classic,
the ninety ninth Run for the Roses, brought to you by the Fall
City Brewing Company Louisville Brewers of FallCity Beer. As you listen to the
Kentucky Derby, enjoy a city. It's part of life today. We're just

(00:20):
moments away from post time. Aswe look at the tote board in centerfield,
post time for the ninety ninth runningof the Kentucky Derby is five thirty
two. The time now seventeen minutespast five, and here with us to
call his thirteenth consecutive Derby on whasis kaywood Ledford? Well? Kay,
how does today's race looked to you? Just about fifteen minutes away from post

(00:41):
time? Well, melt. Itstill has a lot of speculation about how
fast will they run it. Thetrack unquestionably is very fast. I see
the starting gate has already been placedin position up at the head of the
stretch, and we ask how willthe race be run? While you try
to go to the form chart, you try to look at what the horses
have done in the past, andyou look first for the speed. Who'll
be in front as they come thunderingby the finish line here for the first

(01:03):
time, and the name that courseswims right up off the format you is
Shecky Green. He can fly.I believe that he'll lead perhaps the first
mile of the Derby. He hasnever won over a mile in the sixteenth
and he was life and death totake that, and his trainer, lou
Goldfine, actually would have preferred tosave him for the shorter stake races that
are coming up and not try tostretch him out a mile in a quarter.
But he will set I think afast early pace. Also up there

(01:27):
early would be angle Light. Thisis the Wood Memorial winner. This is
the horse that's coupled with Secretariat inthe betting. Now he should be I
don't believe he can run head andhead with Shecky Green, but he should
be up very close. This horse, even though everybody regards him lightly as
one of over one hundred ninety thousanddollars, he was able to set his
own fractions, as they say,or set a slow piece in the Wood

(01:48):
Memorial, and he had enough leftto hang on to the wire and win
it. Then you look at thehorses that should be close to the pace,
and I'd say Santa Anita Derby Winter'sSham definitely will be there. He'll
be laying in their third, fourth, fifth, something like that. He
has been to the post nine times, he's won four of them. He
finished out of the money once andhe did that when he tried to come
from way off the pace. SoI think he'll be up close. He

(02:10):
could be the leader actually, asthey turn out of that last corner for
the run through this long home stretch. Royal and Regal must be up there
close. He won the four runnerover at Keenland. He stopped badly in
the Bluegrass. I think he'll bea long shot today. He might even
try for the lead, but wedon't see anybody getting it from Schecky Green,
our native, the Flamingo winner,a horse it's very consistent, always
gets a part of it. Heshould be laying in there close. And

(02:30):
I look for Secretariat because he wasway back in the wood and lost his
only race in a long time.He had won twelve in a row coming
up to that, and I thinksince he's out there in post position ten,
they'll try to use him a littlebit coming through the stretch and get
him in there with the middle distancehorces. No bold rouder has ever won
the Kentucky Derby Secretariat has never wonit longer than a mile and a sixteenth.

(02:53):
My Gallot should be in a middlegroup of horses. He is the
Bluegrass winner. He has run closeto the pace at times, has come
from way out of at time. He's bred to go a distance, and
we think he'll be about in themiddle of the field, then those it'll
be coming with a big late runfrom the rear ranks will be horses like
Restless Jet. He hasn't won sinceback in mid February Valentine's Day. As
a matter of fact, he'll bea long shot. He was impressive,

(03:14):
I thought in the forerunner here becausehe did pick up nine links on Shecky
Green in a seven for long raceand probably the only horse that deserved to
come back in other than Shecky warBucks. He was dead to heat four
to third over at the Bluegrass atKeelan. He always seems to have some
kind of excuse. They said theygot through a wall of horses too late.
But he's trained by Don Colmes, who sent Dust Commander out for the
Derby Roses and he's ridden by BillHartack, who has just had fantastic Derby

(03:37):
success. He has five winners andhas tied with our Caro there twice,
a prance along shot and the laterunner four Go. The biggest horse in
the race, he stands up thereseventeen hands are better. He always seems
to have excuses, but then he'shard to throw out because about the time
you do, he turns into sensationalwork, as he did this past week,
and he's hard to just throw outtotally, and you can't do it.

(03:57):
Gold Bag certainly doesn't seem to belongin here at all, and he
is the one horse I think ithas next to no chance, and Navajo
doesn't seem perhaps to belong in thisfield either. So that's just about the
way we see the race running aswe come up to it. It will
depend a lot on Shaky Green. He has a jockey just named I think
yesterday, Larry Adams, who's wellknown in these parts. He's written a
lot around here and is an excellentjudge of pace. So if they don't

(04:21):
push him, he could kind oftake his own time out there and could
be a little tougher than most peoplethink, well, those are the contenders
for the ninety ninth running of theKentucky Derby. You may have traveled around
from beer to beer, but haveyou ever noticed that nice things happen when
you pop up in the city andneeds good and take a party makes you

(04:48):
wanna shine? See yeah, whenit comes to good times, get in
step with city. It's part oflife today. With all the flavor and
freshness of a great premium beer,Pop one open and see for yourself.

(05:09):
All seed a party line two downsseed. Ain't it great? As these

(05:30):

(12:58):

it was a real beauty named Agile. Winning time was two minutes, ten

(13:20):
and three quarter seconds for the mileand a quarter event. Second question why
the nineteen oh five running that,my friends, was the year the first
bottle of Fall City beer appeared righthere in Louisville, and since then,
millions of people from all over havemade the fresh, natural taste of Fall
City an important part of their life. And this special day of the year

(13:41):

quick cool aluminum cans. Now,get your hand around a city and get
set for all the excitement as thebrewers of Fall City Beer proudly bring you
the ninety ninth run for the Rosesthe Kentucky Derby. The excitement and is
building in leaps and bounds as weapproached the ninety ninth running of the Kentucky

(14:03):
Derby here at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. Very quickly, let's set
the odds for you as we comeup to the post. The number one
entry Anglelite and Secretariat now listed atthree to two. The number two entry
Shecky Green and My Gallon now listedat five to one. The number three
horse Restless Jet at twenty five toone, The number four horse Warbucks now
listed at seven to one, comingon strong in the odds. The number

(14:26):
five horse Sham at five to two. The number six horse Navajo is now
listed as a long shot at fiftyto one. The number seven horse Twice
a Prince also a long shot atsixty to one. The number eight horse
Our Native with Don Brumfield up nowlisted at ten to one, nine horse
Royal and Regal at twenty five toone, as is Forgo, the number

(14:48):
ten horse also at twenty five toone, and the number eleven horse,
the longest shot in the field, gold Bag, also listed at sixty to
one, amid rumors all this weekthat some of these horses might not be
able to make it to the post, more specifically the trouble with the angle
Light just yesterday, a slight bleedingfrom the nose it was later cleared up

(15:13):
by a veterinarian, and the rumorsthat Royle and Regal may be having trouble
with one of his knees. Allthose rumors have now been turned down.
All the horses have stepped out tothe track. We have a field of
thirteen for this year's ninety ninth runfor the Roses. At this point,
Shecky Sham is listed as the oddson favorite. Are listed as the favorite

(15:35):
coming into the race. The numberone entry of angle Light and Secretariat listed
at three to two. The horsesare on the track. They're being led
up to the starting gate. Thecrowd here moving in anticipation toward the fences.
They are lined up probably twenty fiveor thirty deep along the fences,
trying to get a glimpse as thehorses go by mile and a quarter,

(15:56):
the longest race that any of thesehorses have run this year. Four Goal,
a very strong horse, the largesthorse in today's race, will play
a very important part we expect.Breaking from the gate, he will be
out near Secretariat Secretariat. Of course, breaking from the number ten spot,
Fogo will be directly to the insidein the number nine gate. To the

(16:17):
outside of Secretary will be Schecky Greenin the number eleven gate. That should
be quite a matchup as they comepiling out Angle Light. Part of the
number one entry is down in thenumber two gate, Restless Jet is in
the number one gate, and Warbucksis in the number three gate. Sham
at number four is probably in oneof the best positions coming out of the
gate this afternoon. The crowd nowbeginning to murmur, moving again to the

(16:42):
fence and as we await the startingof this year's ninety ninth run for the
Roses here at Churchill Downs. Thepurse, by the way, is a
record this year, one hundred andfifty five thousand dollars. And now let's
join Kaywood Ledford for this year's ninetyninth run for the Roses from Churchill Downs.

(17:04):
All right, Mike, and ourNative has just moved into the starting
gate. We're getting him in there. Royal and Regal will be coming up
alongside. He's not in his yet, but we've just about got this gate
pretty well loaded. Now we havethirteen of them, and we got the
speed coming from the outside in ScheckyGreen. When we say the outside,
he'll be coming out of eleven.Well. Our Native is acting up a

(17:27):
bit and may delay the start ofthe race just a bit. Fog is
still outside secretariat. They've made secretariatand I'm to light the favorite three to
two. Sham Is at five totwo. Our Native acting up a little
bit in the gate. Normally avery calm, well dispositioned horse, a

(17:48):
little nervous with this big crowd.Light. Yeah, we heard the announcement
and we'll look in there. Itis our Native. They've brought our Native
on through the gate and the rideris off. He did not get out
of the gate. They just broughthim out in front of the gate.

(18:10):
So our Native will have to beplaced back in there and they probably will
not load outside of him until hegets back in. Also with the rider
off is twice a prince, sowe've got two riders off, but twice
a Prince and our Native have tobe put back in. Twice a Prince

(18:33):
one of the outsiders and crawling rightback up on him. Though it is
Santiago, so he's all right. No horses got away, but we're watching
for them to load him into thegate here and then they'll send them down
this long home stretch. I alwayssee that in the back of the gate
there. We also have Navajole withouta rider. Our Native does not have

(18:55):
a rider up, so we're havinga little trouble getting this derby started.
Our Native is mounted now by DonBromfield, who won the derby with Kawhi
King first. When he ever rodein went almost wired and wired in front.
So we've got to reload some ofthese horses and get the others in.

(19:15):
Twice a Prince has just gone intothe starting gate, our Native coming
up just outside of him. Royaland Regal will be moving in, but
we got four go up in therefirst. Royal Here is Secretariat moving into
post position ten. We're just aboutgetting We don't have my gallant in he's

(19:42):
moving in right now, and we'rejust about ready to go. Gold Bag
comes up in and it's post time. They're all there watching for the break.
They look real good as we lookin that gate, and they've got
a long way to hit that firstturn, and we're watching for them to

(20:04):
come out of there. Hey,look all right as we look into the
gate, but they're off. Herethey come and it's a corking goods start
and Secretariat I got away a littlebit badly, but everybody else is running
for it. And here they arerunning forward. We've got Shecky Green that's
out there, going as far ashe can on the head end, as
you'd expect them to be. Andhere his coming into second place. Angle

(20:26):
Light, No, it is RoylandRego now that's coming up into second.
As we come to the line forthe first time. It is Shecky Green
that's on the lead. And here'sthe long shot go Bag coming up into
second, Royal and Rickless third. We've got angle Light and Sham together.
Then we come to our navive Restlessyet my gallot four go. Then we
come to Navajo. Here is Secretariatafter that, then we get Warbucks and
it's twice a prince. The trailersare in the turn. Shecky Green is

(20:48):
on top by three links. GoBag, the long shot is second.
Sham is being sent up by tenKai on the outside and he's just a
half length off second and third. Then there and fourth is Royland rickles I
straightened away for the run down theback side. Shecky Green is still the
leader. It is goal Bag headand head, and now Sham goes by
him into second place. Gold Bagis third. Then we come to Rowl
in Regal fourth. Secretariat has movedup there quickly and he is now in

(21:11):
fifth, and we have Anglelight hisstable mate that's sixth. We got my
Gallott running in there with Forgo andr Native. After that, it's Shecky
Green that's gonna lead him to thefar turn. We've got a half mile
left in the derby and here's SheckyGreen that's on top. It is Sham
that's outside of him, and he'sgoing up to challenge him. Right now,
gold Bag is tired and backs offof it as we get rolling,
Regal coming into third, and Secretariatis up there and fourth and running a

(21:33):
lot right now. Four Go comesup in after that with our natives and
we come on around the turn.It is Sham that is taking the lead
away from Shecky Green, and theycome out of that last corner. Secretary
comes up to fighting all right. Here it is Sham on the inside,
Secretariat on the outside, and itis angle Light. And third it's Sham
on the inside and Secretariat on theoutside, angle Light trying to hold.

(21:56):
Third, Secretariat has the league. We've got less than one hundred and fifty
yarchs to come and Secretariat is ontop and he's gonna take it all.
And if we put him to theline, hits Secretariat. Troya turkcut just
sitting nunny and it's Secretariat that winturedby two and a half links. Then
we get Sham. Second it's tenlinks ore in eighty third, four goals
after that, then restless Jet andNavajo. Then to come to Royal and

(22:17):
Regal then we come in there thatwe get to Checky Green who set the
pace an angle light, and MikeGallon and Warbucks way back there, and
gold Bag who had his name calledEarly brings up the rear. The running
time our new Derby record one minutefifty nine and two fifth seconds. The
first sub two minute derby in history. So Secretariat redeemed himself in spades here

(22:40):
this afternoon. As he once hemade his move. He broke away off
near the back end, moved upsteadily down the backside, had a good
run in the turn, came onand out ran Jam through the stretch and
got his revenge. And that's theway I saw this ninety ninth run for
the Roses, A dad alive andthe good taking pardon everything you want to

(23:03):
shine see boom boom boom boom, dust it all away. Nice things happen

(23:29):
when you pop open the city. All the fun and friends and good times
seem like even more fun. Andthat's as true today as it was back
in Grandpa's time, because Falls Citybeer always has and always will be part
of life. Today. Pop oneopen and see for yourself. Hate it

(23:49):
right. This is Milton Metz backagain on our Sports eighty four booth high
above the finish line at Churchill jwere just a moment ago. Unofficially but
clearly the letter first Secretariat first,Sham was second, our native came in

(24:11):
third and four goal a surprise fourth. It's not official yet, but as
k would called it, it wasa clean race and it doesn't seem as
there will be any dispute. Itis not official, but Secretariat has just
won unofficially the nineteen seventy three KentuckyDerby. It's a race that's going to
be talked about for a long timefor many many reasons. Principally I suppose

(24:36):
because for the first time in thehistory of the ninety nine runs for the
Roses here at the Kentucky Derby, there has been a race that has come
in under the two minute record establishedway back and I say way back because
it's nine years ago in nineteen sixtyfour by Northern Dancer, who came in
with an even two minutes. Thewinning time today was a record one minute

(24:56):
fifty nine and two fifths second. It went pretty much according to form.
Shecky Green, the speed horse wouldhave stounded so many people in its sprints,
clearly took the lead, was clearlyin the lead for a full half
the race, making a good play. Also at the beginning of the race,
Royal and regal and a horse thatmany people said, including Kwoo Ledford,

(25:18):
had no business running and this wasgold Bag. Gold Bag clearly the
longest odds sixty to one on theboard making a play for it in the
beginning along with Sham, and Shamcame along outside on the first turn ed
shaky green about halfway in the race. And then it became a duel between

(25:41):
the arch rivals. And here's agreat roar from the crowd as Secretariat comes
back past the finish line, scoresof photographers. There is Ron Turcott dopping
his cap to the crowd. Photographersstreaming all around, and there's only one
winner. I wonder how many peopleremember in a couple of years that it

(26:02):
was Sham who came in second theirarch rivals. The one time that Secretariat
stumbled was in the Wood. Shambeat it. And then that became the
feud between the two trainers, betweenLucian Lauren whose Secretariat seemed to be picking
up all the marbles. For nineteenseventy three, Frank Poncho Martin claimed that
he had been slurred by Lucian Laurenand had said that four times out of

(26:25):
four, any time you wanted tosay it, Sham was going to beat
Secretariat. It is true that Secretariatcame in third in the Word in the
Wood memorial, Sham edged him out. But today it was a different story.
Not only did Secretariat beat Sham, but he established a new record.
Now they're beginning the parade that willeventually lead to the green in front of

(26:48):
the presentation stand where the governor ofthe state, where all the crew will
be. There where you see dozensof photographers from national and international publications snapping
endless pictures, many of which willappear in newspapers tomorrow morning, all across
the country and around the world.Next to us, there's a booth being
held here by some Puerto Ricans arebeing broadcast overseas. What a Secretariat win

(27:11):
a purse of one hundred and fiftyfive fifty dollars. The odds for Secretariat
paid off at three to two. They have not posted the official wind sign
yet. They have not posted theprices. As soon as they are flashed
on the tote board, we willgive them to you. This is Milton
Metz at the press box high abovethe finish line. We're looking right down
on the finish line and we're watchingnow as they're bringing Secretariat into the horseshoe.

(27:34):
A little bit fractious makes a littlebreak into the rope which is keeping
off outsiders and coming to the burgundycolored flowers, and that big arc.
Three enormous bouquets of roses in frontof the stand. We have them in
our glasses now. And now theblanket of roses has been draped over a

(27:57):
secretariat ron. Turcotta's taken off hiscap, and there are some proud people
standing around photographers. I dare saythere must be eighty or ninety of them
taking pictures, and they are standingthere proudly. Lucian Lauren is there,
and missus John Tweety, who isno stranger to the winning circle in any

(28:18):
races, studying there proudly with theirentourage. Lucian Lauren is there. The
jockey has jumped off the horse. They've taken the blanket of roses off.
Secretariat is standing very calmly, andnow Turcotta has taken off in the saddle,
and they still have not posted anofficial but he's there where he belongs,

(28:40):
where the champions belong. He's amagnificent looking animal. And that is
Secretariat, who went off with threeto two. You might be interested to
know that Sham was listed at fiveto two, also a close second to
the favorite. There you have it, it's official, friends, it is
official, and Secretariat is the ninetyninth winner of the Kentucky Derby, paying

(29:00):
five dollars three twenty and three dollarsfive dollars three twenty and three dollars for
Secretariat, the place horse Sham returnsthree twenty and three dollars, and the
show horse, Our Native, returnsfour dollars and twenty cents. Up on
Secretariat was Ron Turcotte in the ironsfor Sham was Lafite Pinchai, and for

(29:22):
the third horse, Don Brumfield onour Native. They're still standing there and
the horse is nodding his head asif to say, yes, I tried
valiantly. He's a magnificent looking animal, and everybody's posed there for the great
victory pictures. Missus tweety has aboutfour of her relatives there, Mister Lauren

(29:44):
is there in a nice blue outfit. The handler is holding the horses,
just nodding his head up and down, and there's a buzz in the crowd,
the infield of many of who didnot see the race milling around there.
But it is all official to getsecretary of this one, with a
brand new course record of one fiftynine and two let's switch now to the

(30:04):
present station stand and Jack Whittaker talkingto the jockey at the back of your
mind, and I just I wasn'tas confidence today as I really was all
the time, because it's just thatone thing that you have in the back
of your mind. You know, also you all do that he did run,
He always done everything I asked offof him, and that I couldn't
understand that race. Well, let'stake a look at today. You were

(30:26):
right on today. We'll start herewith the start ron. You're in post
position as huge role. Well,he breaks with his field, but he
draws back. He's last now andI just dropped my hand let him run
his race. When I passed thewire the first turn and the first time
around, he started wanting to run, so I just looked for an opening
and he went on. Picked himall the way, made a help a
run down the backside, but hewas doing on his own and ran his

(30:51):
race just like I like he usedto. I'm sure you expected a blazing
fast pac there by Angle life, didn't you. Well, I don't think
that. I'm not Angle, andI'm sorry, check you green. We
were going down the back side.I'll tell you the way I was moving
and the way they were running.I didn't think you were going all that
patters because I was moving so slowand pick him up so fast. You
know, I didn't look at thefraction. I don't know what the fraction
were, but uh, I wasmoving awfully easy down the backside. You

(31:12):
know, you set a new KentuckyDerby record, don't you. Yes,
it does. Your busted that? All right, here we go for the
whole race. Ron, Let's takeit from the stock and go all away
with it, all right? Asusual? He dropped back there, and
I just dropped my hand on himand just let him run his own race.
When I came, well, i'llpick it up as we go along.
You see his last right now.I anticipate a little trouble there when

(31:33):
I see that horse going on theoutside, so I didn't want to lose
all that kind of ground, andI dropped in some heartachs say hey,
watch our watch out because he wasout of there, might come all the
way in and uh which I wasn'tanyway, But when that horse ducked out
there, I took advantage of that. Uh see you see that horse duck
out. See that horse duck outright there. Yeah, round the turn
Loocian larns with us. Now thisis the rerun lootion. Okay, now

(31:57):
you're moving a little bit. Yes, Well, when when he's on up
there, uh, he picked itup on his own. So I figure,
well, I don't want to stophim now, so I'll lose the
ground. I'll uh. I knowthat I might have to lose ground both
turns, but I so heck,I might as well take the chance because
that he's running easy now and hewants to run and I don't want to
stop him. All right, CheckyGreen is still in the lead. And

(32:19):
there goes Sham after Shecky Green.Right now, and now you start to
move, I believe very shortly.Yes, Uh he moved waffle fast on
the backside and awful easy. Okay, you got a Shecky Green there and
uh and Sham. And in amoment, the blue and white blocks will
come into view. This moment youcan't see me on on TV there,
but I'm pipp see you see hishead there now he's really going yes,

(32:43):
yes, I never asked him torun. Yeah, I'm letting him run
now, but I'm not asking him. I could see left fitt was going
very easy in front of me.He was, yes, and he was
very going, very easy when Icame to him. Uh, right there,
this one, this one kind ofwise sure that if he does get
in, which everybody says he waslugging in bed down the stretch at at

(33:06):
Aqueduct. Well, I made surethat I had room to work with him.
Well, here's the where you wentin where Derbys are usually wanting,
this stretch, and you really putsham away here looking back there. All
right, yes, well I thoughtI did to put se any challenge there,
and I thought he was going on. He was running real good.
Yes, sir Lucian, lyon.Turn around here. I want you to
see a happy man. Finally, how do you feel now? Huh feels

(33:27):
very very good. We want totalk to you a little minute after the
presentation, Lucian, Ladies and gentlemen, the President of Churchill Downs, mister
Lynn Stone, thank you very much. Welcome again to Churchill Downs. It's
my pleasure the introduce the Honorable WendellFord, Governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

(33:52):
Thank you, as stole very shortly. It was a typical beautiful Kentucky
day. It was a beautiful horse, a beautiful time, and I present
a beautiful trophy to a beautiful lady. And now Missus tweety gets the beautiful

(34:22):
trophy from the Governor. And that'stwo in a row for Missus tweety last
year with reever Ridge and this yearwith Secretariat. We want to thanks CBS
for allowing us to pick up thepresentation ceremonies and r pal Jack Whittaker who
always does his fine job in coveringthis dramatic moment when our awards are made
to the principles and he just gotthrough with an interesting interview with Ron Turk
got the winning trainer, the horse, he gets the garland of roses.

(34:45):
See. Did you know that thereare two jockeys who are five time Derby
winners. The two members of thatexclusive club are none other than the great
Eddie ar Carroll and Bill hartek OurCarrol won in nineteen thirty eight, forty
one, forty five, eight andnineteen fifty two. Heartach did it in
nineteen fifty seven, sixty sixty two, sixty four and again in nineteen sixty

(35:07):
nine. Those are truly names anddates to remember. Here's another special name
and date, Fall City beer nineteenoh five. That's the year people started
enjoying the refreshing taste of Fall Citybeer. That's right, it all started
right here in Louisville, nearly seventyyears ago. That started a tradition that's
as much a part of life todayas the Kentucky Derby and Fall City Beer

(35:29):
is proud of being part of lifein Louisville. In fact, millions of
people from all over enjoy Fall CityBeer. Make sure it's part of your
life today. There hasn't been anyvisual or apparent defection of the crowd,
although some of them are beginning tosonder out we can notice in the parking
lot toward their cars. But there'sstill remained many ten thousands of people of

(35:51):
here. But eventually, and startingnow slow movement as more than one hundred
and thirty thousand people make their wayto buses, cabs, cars, and
maybe a few hikers in the bobtoo. We can't possibly see it all
from here. So here's a fellowwho can Dick Gilbert in SkyWatch eighty four.
Hell, you're absolutely right, milk, they aren't coming out, and
they're coming out in all directions.Walking through the parking lot in the southwest

(36:14):
corner, spilling through the gates northof the grand stand itself, loading into
the buses and camps. The earliestdepartures are already headed up Fourth Street into
the downtown area and the taxi cabs. For information, I count. I've
counted twice, got a different numbereach time, but I get one hundred
and two buses. One hundred andtwo city buses are lined up there north
of the grand stands, waiting totake aboard their passengers and run them either

(36:37):
downtown or back over to their carsat the fairgrounds. As you might expect,
there's no real dense crush yet.But we'll stay here and help you
as much as we can. Staytuned and drive happy Dick Gilbert SkyWatch eighty
four. We'll be coming back toyou deck. Meanwhile, Kay What Ledford
has joined me. He has doneanother magnificent job of calling this Hey,
kay What. I made the pointthat they'll be talking about this race for

(36:59):
years to come, and from morethan one reason. Well, it's the
same combination that won it last year. The horse is owned by Missus Tweedy
or the Chennery Estate, trained byLucian Lauren, so he's back to back
winners, ridden by Ron Turcotte, who gets back to back winners. But
I think perhaps the two key thingshere. Certainly one was a Kentucky Derby
record. We've kind of hinted itthat as a day has gone along because

(37:21):
in the earlier races they were reallyturning in fast clockings over the track,
so it was very fast. Theother is, and I have to confess
I was a member of the groupthat thought, no bold Ruler, no
colt sired by bold Ruler, whatever, win the Kentucky Derby go a mile
in a quarter this early in histhree year old season. Nobody had ever
done it before. We'd had somehere that had been favored. But he
certainly did it today and Secretary Atran a magnificent race. He'd had the

(37:44):
knock on him quite a bit aftera dismal third place finish in the Wood
Memorial, but he was super heretoday and he broke and not only broke,
he broke by three fifths of asecond. Northern Dancers Northern Dancers Derby
record of two minutes flat, sowe've got a two minute to Derby record
one fifty nine and two. Well, it was an exciting race and anyway,

(38:05):
here's the way I saw the runningof the nineteen seventy three Kentucky Derby.
They're off here they come and it'sa corking goods start and Secretariat I
got away a little bit badly, but everybody else is running for it.
And here they are running for it. We've got Shecky Green that's out there,
going as far as he can onthe head end as you'd expect them
to be. Shecky Green is stillthe leader. It is goal Bag,
head and head, and now Shamgoes by him into second place. Gold

(38:28):
Bag is third. Then we cometo roll in Regal fourth. Secretariat has
moved up there quickly and he isnow in fifth, and we have Angelidis
stable mate the sixth. We gotmy Gallott running in there with Forgo and
r naightive. After that, it'sShacky Green that's gonna lead him to the
far turn. We've got a halfmile left in the derby, and here's
Shecky Green that's on top. Itis Sham that's outside of him, and
he's going up to challenge him.Right now. Gold Bag is tired and

(38:50):
backs off of it. As weget rolling Regal coming into third and Secretariat
is up there and fourth and runninga lot right now. Fog comes up
in after that with our native andwe come on around the turn. It
is Sham that is taking the leadaway from Shicki Green and they come out
that last corner. Secretary comes upto fighting all right here It is Sham
on the inside, Secretariat on theoutside. Added is angle Light, and

(39:13):
third h's Sham on the inside andSecretariat on the outside idle Light trying the
whole. Third Secretariat has the lead. We've got less than one hundred and
fifty yards to come, and Secretariatis on top and he's gonna take it
all. And if we work tothe line, HiT's Secretariat drawing up Turncott
just sitting on him, and it'sSecretaria. They've winsed by two and a
half lenks. Then we get Samsecond, it's ten Leaks Star at eighty.
Third Corgo is after that, thenRestless Jet and Navajo then to come

(39:37):
to Royal and Regel. Then wecome in there and we get Checky Green
who set the pace an angle light, and Mike Gallon and Warbucks way back
there, and gold Bag who hadhis name called Early brings up the rear.
The running time our new derby recordone minute, fifty nine and two
fifth seconds, the first sub twominute derby in history. So Secretariat redeemed

(39:59):
himself in Spain here this afternoon. As he once he made his move,
he broke away off near the backend, moved up steadily down the backside,
had a good run in the turn, came on and out Ranch Sham
through the stretch and got his revenge. And that's the way I saw this
ninety ninth run for the roses. And in case you missed it, when

(40:19):
Milt gave it to you, Secretariat, who ran as an entry with angle
light, pays five dollars three twentyand three. Even Sham returns three twenty
and three. Even our native,a real game horse that always gets a
part of it, was third andpaid four to twenty. Okay, would
we cad get the full picture ofthese more than one hundred thousand plus fans
who are now trying to make theirway out of Churchill Downs. I know
many of them have transistor radios andif they'll listen closely, they can get

(40:43):
the traffic situation as it is ofthis moment. As we now call in
traffic tracker Dick Gilbert in SkyWatch eightyfour. Already there's throwing out the gates
now filling the buses and the taxicabs. The first two civilian cars are
starting to move now a third streetis taking a load. Northbound, there's
a little bit of a build up, but nothing serious yet. Eastbound on

(41:05):
the Winkler and the buses and caveson first Cluss has just arrived over at
the Fairgrounds parking lot. The caveshave been already off and running in their
own private derby, heading for thedowntown to discharge their pastors and then rush
back out of your I suppose andmake a double trip at least this afternoon.
No real problems as yet, butI what caution you as you get

(41:27):
to your cars, remember there arecars parked on the grass and then driveways
on the curves. They'll be backingout in strange and unexpected places. Being
doubly careful. Drive happy, Dick, Gilbert, SkyWatch eighty fourth. This
is Milton Metz. The nineteen seventythree Kentucky Derby is history. But the
jojoll Down Spring Meet continues through Juneninth, and I'll be back here on

(41:47):
Monday. Kay, who's saying thatwhen the unparalleled sports director will be back
for falsity bear to call the featurerace okay, would let for us again
done a magnificent job a very difficultinto him. Many thanks for again making
an exciting and very difficult race soclear in our minds. We're going off

(42:07):
the air from here, but DickGilbert will continue to survey the traffic situation
from the best vantage point you canever hope for, high above it all
in his copter. These reports willbe heard frequently for the next several hours
until traffic has returned to normalcy. In those reports, we hope you'd be
of great help to you who aredriving, and may we say whas wants
you to get home safe and sound, drive carefully. The ninety ninth running

(42:30):
of the Kentucky Derby has been broughtto you by Fall City Beer. Remember
nice things happen when you open acity. Pop a open and see for
yourself now. Personal note, it'sbeen a pleasure for me to serve again
as we try to bring you thestory, the drama, the word picture
of another historic run for the Roses. We have been here for some eight

(42:50):
hours and has gone by like eightminutes. My thanks to our executive producer,
Bill Aldrich, and for our staffpeople. Bless them all who made
it all possible, and on behalfof all of them, I thank you
for joining us for this all daycoverage and one of the world's greatest sports
