WHAS11 was scheduled to be the official broadcast station for this year's Thunder Over Louisville. A flooded Ohio River canceled the show, but the TV station still has plans for all day entertainment.

Doug Proffitt visited to reveal WHAS11's plans to carry special drone coverage on Saturday and then taped airshow content and fireworks displays from previous years. The all day show begins at noon on WHAS11.

Plus, there will be a fundraising component to assist the local branch of the American Red Cross assisting flood victims.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
You know a lot of people pulling to me and say, Terry,
you're the old timer of Louisville media. I'll say, well,
you may be right about that, but I know who's
right behind me on that list. He's sitting right over
here next to me. Doug Prophet from Whas eleven.

Speaker 2 (00:15):
I'm still a young pup you are with your ears.
You're getting close to the big five ozero on the air.

Speaker 1 (00:21):
But I love when they run video of you from
when you were I don't know, an intern or something
and you look like you're nine years old.

Speaker 2 (00:27):
Yeah, long string straw, blonde hair and about one hundred
and eighty pounds.

Speaker 1 (00:31):
We're both local guys. Though, it's been fun working for
stations that we knew about our whole lives.

Speaker 2 (00:36):
Well, it is because I grew up, of course, listening
to you on the rock stations when you all were
just trailblazing it and tearing it up, and we would
go to school and talk about Yeah, Terry Miners and
Ron Clay and all that group.

Speaker 1 (00:49):
You have lrs and QMF lrs.

Speaker 2 (00:51):
You worked for the Hensons. Yeah, I loved interviewing Luisa
Henson over the years.

Speaker 1 (00:55):
Great folks, and you know we've both had lucky Ryan
here in the media to be sure, and we do
all kinds of magnificent events. That's part of the joy
of the work we get to do. And I know
that WHAS eleven TV was set up to be the
official station for thunder Overload.

Speaker 2 (01:15):
You have it right there, we were. I was so excited.
It's my favorite thing to broadcast because you know, Terry,
you're flying by the seat of your pants literally a
lot of the time. I was gonna be on the
air all day with Connie Leonard and Shane McCallister and
our whole group from two until eleven o'clock. But we
have retooled it for Saturday.

Speaker 1 (01:34):
I heard that there was a change that you're not
just going to just run old reruns of something else.
You're going to actually turn this into a positive for
the community we are.

Speaker 2 (01:45):
We have a title for it, WHS eleven Rising Above
the Storm. It's a fundraiser for flood recovery and the
thunder Spirit because we wanted to help Kentucky, Ina, which
as you know, is the great tradition of both WHS
radio and TV. We turn our attention to the community
and so all day Saturday from noon until eleven thirty
will be a thunder presentation and a fundraiser for the

(02:08):
American Red Cross Louisville Chapter, which takes care of all
of our southern Indiana counties and the counties in Kentucky
that are flooded.

Speaker 1 (02:15):
And that means the money stays local, right.

Speaker 2 (02:17):
I had We had a two pm meeting with him
and I asked him the question. They said, yes, that
money that you give on Saturday will stay directly to Kentucky. Anda.
And our live fundraiser will begin at six pm Saturday,
and at nine thirty we're going to show fireworks for
a half hour, right when they would lift off on
a normal thunder. We're going to replicate that at nine

(02:38):
thirty with over twelve years.

Speaker 1 (02:40):
Yeah, because you've done all these shows multiple times, because
it was all cycled. Actually, we were the only station
doing it at the beginning.

Speaker 2 (02:46):
For eighteen years, whas TV was the first station to
do it when it moved to the Waterfront because they
had had the one at Cardinal Stadium was there. Do
you remember the Daylight fireworks show that Wayne Hetton er
Pulledo was insane eighty eighty or eighty nine, Yeah, I'm
standing there next to John Bowl and we look at
a noontime fireworks show going off explosions. It was after

(03:10):
they're rough luncheon, and I said, if you've ever seen
anything like this, this is the nuttiest thing. He said,
I'm speechless. And then somebody's Wayne tells me. Somebody said
to him, can you do this at night? This would
be really good, much better that way.

Speaker 1 (03:23):
And there are also some problems with little flames popping
up around the homes that were near the fair ground.

Speaker 2 (03:29):
And they also yeah, and then they let off on
the waterfront a bunch of miler or a bunch of balloons,
like thousands of them, and they took a lot of
heat from environmentalists for doing that.

Speaker 1 (03:38):
That wasn't very smart. But I had the command center
of many years, and that was fun to be there
because you're talking to all the people running the show.
You get to talk to a lot of great guests
because everyone's everyone wants to stick their head and the
command center and see what's going on.

Speaker 2 (03:52):
And you loved it when there'd be some kind of
mess up or delay or a screw. I know you
all had a blast with that.

Speaker 1 (03:59):
It's the only time I've been live on TV talking
to a helicopter. The helicopter was hovering out over the
Ohio River, and I had to start by addressing the
camera on the helicopter, and then turned to the guy
who was holding a camera on the deck thunder Trivia.

Speaker 2 (04:13):
Who was the voice of the American flag as they
flew it across the sky? Who voiced that over? I know?
You know it? The most famous anchorman ever, Walter Kronkite.

Speaker 1 (04:25):
Don't remember the Walkite deal.

Speaker 2 (04:27):
Yeah, he would voice over the as it flew by
in the commander you may may have never heard.

Speaker 1 (04:34):
No, I was already in there having champagne.

Speaker 2 (04:38):
Well, and you remember the old Barry burns In trick
he used to do on the Second Street on the
Second Street bridge. They would blow off the fireworks and
he was on the bridge and then when the smoke cleared, Barry,
if he had gone to like Paris, France or whatever
earlier in the years, on a great TV trick, would
show himself landing in one of these far off cities

(04:59):
and that it's the clip we would take.

Speaker 1 (05:01):
That's brilliant. Love that. So anyway, you guys had a
lot of your infrastructure. I guess in place where you
had your plans all in place, then we get this
cancelation for this year's thunder. But it's okay because you
can still fill the TV airwaves with what air show content.

Speaker 2 (05:18):
So we're going to run old thunders right up to
six o'clock. The six o'clock we'll have a special live
newscast which will also cover the latest on Frankfurt, Lebanon Junction,
Bullot County, Nelson County, Southern Indiana, Utica, to give you
an update on that. But our drone crew from Visionaire,
we had hired these guys Ian Andrew Wonderful Dubo. They

(05:41):
were going to be our live fireworks drones. They were
going to actually fly drones up close to the fireworks
as they go off. They're coming back with us and
they're going to have live drone coverage of all of
the waterfront to show everybody what it's like on Saturday.
You will see why this was a good decision. Yeah,
you know, it hurts to say it, but it was
the smart safety community decision to do canceled under over

(06:03):
louisvill It's just too dangerous down there. Have you seen
what's down there now? There's an old cable. There's a
cabin cruiser that floated down from somewhere and it's gonna
PLoP right on the Great Lawn when the water goes down.

Speaker 1 (06:13):
No, I hadn't seen that.

Speaker 2 (06:14):
You need to vote Terry boat for sale.

Speaker 1 (06:18):
That's how that goes. And then so you had like
the drone company that was already scheduled to work for
you on your show on Saturday. They're still here. They're
gonna help. They are here there from Louisville.

Speaker 2 (06:30):
They're a good company based in Louisville, and they did
the fireworks last year and they beefed up their drones
for this year's coverage. But now we're gonna continue to
use them and they're gonna have unbelievable live coverage of
as you know, the sun will be setting close to
about that time. It's gonna be an amazing look. If
you want an update on where the river stands, they're

(06:50):
gonna have it Saturday.

Speaker 1 (06:53):
Pretty fantastic. Yeah, I'm glad you guys are doing. It's
just raising money through the Red Cross to just help
people that are in a really tough circumstances.

Speaker 2 (07:01):
So we have the for our phone bank. It's it's
the Crown Court, the Derby, the Derby Princesses. They're going
to be in answering the phones. Uh. We got the
dual mayors, Mike Moore from Jeffersonville, Craig Greenberg coming in,
Wayne Heninger will be their lives, Scottie Davenport, who could
probably fill an hour himself right as you know. A

(07:23):
divaon Holt from the Ali Center is going to come
in and talk about their impact. And all these are
great community oriented, so wonderful. Their spirit is there for
this town and they're going to be really pushing to
help the American Redicord.

Speaker 1 (07:36):
If someone want a contest to be the thunder daty
of the person who launches the fireworks and they bumped.

Speaker 2 (07:41):
They were from out of town, so I don't even
know if they're coming back in because we wanted to
do it's a woman who we wanted to do a
story on and they were saying, well, she won the contest,
but she does not live in Louisville, so it was
coming here for it.

Speaker 1 (07:54):
But you know, why don't we get a bag of
firecrackers and then FaceTime her.

Speaker 2 (08:01):
I've had a lot of people saying, hey, I'll be
in my backyard watching with sparklers going for you guys.
You know Terry first ever cancelation. COVID did it. But
we all saw that coming. Yeah, this is the first
time that you've seen You've been down there many years,
you've seen the river come up.

Speaker 1 (08:19):
Yeah, but this was just insane just to see the
you know, the situation and knowing that there was no
way they were going to be able.

Speaker 2 (08:26):
To do it. So I do want to say that
for a television station, Thunder is a revenue maker because
of all the advertising you sell. And I'm really proud
of the local advertisers in town. I heard from our
general manager that a majority of them are sticking with us.
They want to be a part of this community fundraiser,
and they some of them are even donating now money

(08:47):
to this effort. That's really cool.

Speaker 1 (08:49):
Excellent, All right, Thunder over Louisville Saturday. It's still called that,
even though there won't be an event, but on w
h A S eleven, there will be plenty of coverage.
You'll be able to see a lot of the air
show coverage, fireworks and interviews.

Speaker 2 (09:02):
That works at nine thirty. Just just if you were
going to plan your little party. We're gonna do it
for thirty minutes. There'll be a commercial break right in
the middle, a little intermission, but it'll be right there
from nine thirty to ten, just like it would. Just
like Wayne Hettinger. It's his best of work.

Speaker 1 (09:16):
Oh, he's gonna love that. Yes, he'll be the Thundernator
to push the tape machine that starts rolling there.

Speaker 2 (09:21):
Yeah, he told me he turns eighty in July. So Wayne,
if you're listening, and I know you are because you're
a big Terry Miners fan, happy early birthday. And I
know he's excited for next year. He used to work
for us, Yes he did, remember Omelet. Oh yeah, he
created the little egg, the animation and the goofy little
tune that opened up with Milton.

Speaker 1 (09:39):
Milton faith Lyles faith Liles were the great host of Omelet,
a TV show in the morning, and then we stole
the concept and called a great great day. Love that works,
great seed, Doug Prophet.

Speaker 2 (09:49):
Thank you for everything Terry and your support. Appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (09:52):
Brother. Saturday on WHS eleven, it's still thunder Day baby,
Just tune in and enjoy. Back in a minute
