The Real Rant Podcast

The Real Rant Podcast

Once upon a time not so long ago in this very land called home, I was a City Councillor for a period of time who even ran for mayor once. Now I'm getting back to my roots in the arts and performing and writing but I still like to rant about all of the things: politics, climate change, dumb humans, cultural issues, not enough safe cycling infrastructure, too much garbage, you name it. Sometimes I have something interesting to say and sometimes I have even more interesting guests to chat with. *All opinions expressed in this podcast are purely my own and are not meant to represent the views of any organization I belong to or work for. No disrespect or offence is meant to anyone. It's just me ranting to save my sanity. I love disclaimers.

In this episode, I chat about what it was like to run for Mayor (it was really hard!) while completing the construction of a seniors rental apartment building with the weight of the world on my shoulders. Now the election is over, it's a new day and anything is possible! Look out 2023, because I'm coming for you!

There are some good news updates on how the City of Powell River has been leading the way on climate action and corporate emission reduction and I also stray off somewhat into what it's about running for a local government elected position.

I have had the privilege as an elected official to be handed opportunities to listen, to learn and to try to understand our collective past and how we can consider moving forward as a community towards true reconciliation with our Indigenous partners in this land we call our home. This journey should bring us together, not tear our community apart and I have some thoughts on that. I encourage you to listen with your heart wide open...

Throughout this pandemic, Rachel has continued to work hard for North Island - Powell River. Thank you Rachel!

Things are starting to look a bit brighter and feel a bit better. But how can we make sure everyone's voices are heard when they want to speak? The inner musings of where do we go from here.

We thought 2020 was bad and then 2021 said "Hold my beer." Watching the events unfold this week at the US Capitol of a coup attempt by ReTrumplicans was shocking but we should not be surprised. I am diving into the uncomfortable topic of systemic racism and implicit bias in our society. Happy New Year?

Every week there are a new set of challenges it seems, especially when elected to a local government position. We have a new amazing cabinet in the BC Government (super exciting!), our City Council has been making a lot of great forward thinking decisions to make our community the best it can be and we are all just plugging along the best we can in the hopes that it can only get better, right?!

The unfortunate political structures we have in the world are all broken. We are all caught up in a system that doesn't work. But in order to change the system, we have to show up and understand all sides that are at play and not just look at the view we want to see all the time. And Old Growth Forests need protecting.

How can Cities do a better job of providing safe, intuitive infrastructure to encourage more cycling, walking, safety for mobility scooters and all forms of Active Transportation? If we build it, will they ride?

The layers upon layers of bureaucracy that exist within government are soooo painful! How do we overcome this and maintain our sanity while trying?!

Public transit rider Jean Medley talks about how difficult it has been trying to live life with a substantially reduced transit service. Is public transit an essential service or a business that's supposed to just generate a certain amount of revenue or not run at all? We will explore the challenges of how our bus system is operated by BC Transit and Local Govt and Jean has some ideas for how we can improve it! She also has a f...

Bravo to some newly appointed Community members to a new City Advisory Committee and welcome to the convoluted nature of local government! When I hear myself trying to explain the Committees and Council process and legislation it seems even more confusing! Thanks for getting involved!

Greta Thunberg shamed world leaders and still we resist change to the extent that we need it now. What will it take to get all levels of government to sit up, pay attention and devote the energy and support to fix our broken system and crumbling planet?

I'm going to evaluate how a water bottling facility does not fit with the City's Strategic Priorities, Values & Mission Statement and Ec Dev Strategy. Also how does the creation of more single-use disposable waste factor into the Region's Solid Waste Management Planning?

Water is a human right. We should not be allowing corporations to privatize it, bottle it and sell if for enormous profits and then ship it around the world increasing the carbon emissions of the planet. The City of Powell River should prohibit the bottling of all groundwater and surface water in our bylaws. We should not allow a water bottling operation to come to the town to bottle water and sell it. And we should lobby the Provi...
