(00:27):
Well, so weekend, welcome You'reat home with Gary Sullivan talking a little
home improvement. And before we wentto that break, that last break,
the top of the hour break,we were talking to Richard and we were
talking about stains of different types ofstains. He was using it on a
boardwalk. You were probably listening thinkingmy wood deck because it's the same type

(00:50):
of protection that you would use bothon a pressure tree wood deck and a
boardwalk. All right, Richard,Sorry for the abrupt ending, but welcome
back. Yeah, I just didn'tknow what I know. The semi transparence
thing is what you said, Butwhat's the product name that I should be
looking? Well, there's all there'sthere's truly is all kinds out there.

(01:11):
Okay, So you know if Iwere you know, are you're thinking about
using the semi transparent. Yeah, that's probably what we'll be using. And
I know in the past you hadthis one product that was good. You
only had to do it like everyseven years or something like that, Right,
it was called one Time. Wouldnot many people carry that anymore?

(01:36):
It's a very it was a veryexpensive product. It's probably about one hundred
and twenty bucks a gallon. It'scalled one time would and if there's a
dealer near you that would have that, you probably have to go to onetimewood
dot com. Uh, that wouldbe ideal. But the last couple of

(01:56):
times I've talked to people, theshipping was hot and the product was expensive,
and so I don't really talk aboutit as much, but that that
was excellent stuff. I mean excellentstuff. And if full sunshine, it's
really excellent. It it cures,it doesn't dry, so it has to
have sunshine to cure and dry.So people sometimes were using it on areas

(02:23):
where there was an overhang and thendidn't really dry right, So that was
one of the reasons. Okay, that's my problem. Then my problem is
it's on the north side of thehouse, which doesn't get much sun.
Well as all, as there's nota cover over it, you'd be fine.
Okay, all right, So that'san option. Okay, Then there

(02:45):
is there is literally products that gofrom thirty dollars to seventy dollars a gallon.
The one that will give you,i'm gonna say, an extra year's
worth all life would be called Defyd f y wood stain, thefly wood

(03:07):
stain. It is an acrylic ora water based stain. Now I've said
this for years and I still meanit. There is no perfect product.
So the DeFi wood stain acrylic isgoing to give you. It probably has
the best U V blocking properties ofproducts that I'm familiar with. Okay,

(03:35):
the negative on it is you gotto do an extra step in there to
make sure we have good penetration ofthat product. Water based stains don't like
to absorb into the wood as muchas maybe modified acrylic alcud stains. But
the DeFi wood stain would be agood recommend that I would give you if

(04:01):
you're looking for that extra year. You would use a regular deck cleaner,
which is a oxygenated bleach powder.Mix it with water, spread it on,
let it sit, you know, ten minutes, scrub it, don't
sand it. Don't sand it.Just take a street broom agitated hose it

(04:24):
off. If you're going to usea pressure washer, you know forty degree
nozzle and twenty four hundred PSI.Nothing higher than that because with sanding you
create a little fuzz on a wood. You could get a blotchy stain.
You got to really be careful withthat. People that do decks. They

(04:46):
do it all the time, butas homelers, we always like always think
more is better. So I'd usethe oxygen aid bleach and then use a
deck braightener, which is just aliquid that's put on there. It's an
oxalic acid which opens up the poresof the wood, allowing the latex stained
to penetrate deeper. Okay, allthese products are done a little bit different.

(05:11):
The Defy wood stain does two coats, and it's wet on wet,
so you might go down you know, five feet or so six feet and
then go back to the top anddo the second coat. They've got a
really if you go to their websiteDefy Woodstain dot com, they've got a
really great applicator. So you gotto put it on heavy and work it

(05:38):
into the wood. Okay, ifyou're looking for like a solvent base,
I'll take you back to Sherwin Williams. They have a modified oil in acrylic
combination called super Deck. I've alsorecommended that for years. It it penetrates

(06:00):
probably a little bit easier than toDefy. I would still do the UH
deck brightener in there. I thinkthat helps both products. It's a it's
a it's a good um, it'sit's a it's a real good uh deck
sealer. It's you know, uh, like I said, defies claim as

(06:20):
they get you an extra year.I think it probably does. But so
much of it just depends on howintense that sun is. So if you're
on the north side, that's good. You know, you you may very
well get more than three years outof it. You you may get five
years out of it, all right. And do you have a recommendation for

(06:41):
a two year old newly paid assalt driveway seiler. I got a great
one. And there's again there's alldifferent kinds, even in the same manufacture.
So there's one called drive Max onethousand. Look that up. It
is a modified acrylic. It's gota ten year warranty. It's got superior

(07:08):
and I mean superior UV protection itso it stays blacker longer. It's it's
a gel and you distributed just likeyou would a regular asphaltse seiler, you
know, with a brush and thena squeegee. I know Low's and Ace
carry it very very good stuff. And they also have in that family of

(07:33):
Blackjack driveway seilers, they have aseven year warranty of five year warranty and
a two year warranty, so thatone I just gave you is the top
of the food chain. Okay, all right, thank you so much for
your time. All Right, youbet, thanks Richard. Take care all
right? Rolling through the weekend,we are, yeah a lot, boy.

(07:54):
If you're going to spend the time, don't you want the best?
I mean, some of these prices, even I go, whoa, whoa,
didn't see that coming. But I'lltell you, you know, if
you can get a driveway and it'slike forty bucks a pail five gallon paid,
it's not eightful, but man,ten years, that's pretty pretty good

(08:16):
news. Read the directions. Ifyou're doing this kind of work and the
temperatures we've been having, there usuallyare limitations. And some of those limitations
are, you know, ninety degrees. And I say that about everything you're
using this time of year, paints, calocking, concrete, steelers, driveway

(08:39):
steelers. Pay attention to what thelimitations are. I know I'm always talking
about read the directions, but youreally need to read the directions to find
out where the line's drawn temperature wise, but also technique wise. I was
talking about the defy wood stain. It's two coat you know procedure. The

(09:03):
super deck is a one coat procedure. The super deck you could actually spray
on the surface and then roll itout. You couldn't do that with the
device, So pay attention to thedirections. A quick break in Birch.
You'll be up first. We'll continueat home with Gary Solivator. Start a

(12:13):
having a great weekend getting a fewthings done around the home, and if
you'd like to join us, ourphone number is eight hundred and eight two
three eight two five five Birch.Welcome, Hey Gary, How are you?
I'm doing fine, sir, Thankyou good. First of all,
I've got a great recommendation for you. I had a forty year old deck

(12:33):
roughly and I had tried to stainit years ago and just didn't hold.
And then a handy, a greathandyman I have told me about deck over
which is a product from Home Depot, and I'll say, I mean it
goes it's stick as peanut butter goeson sick. But man, it's transformed
my deck. And you know, rather than spending all that money on a
new deck, now I feel likeI have a newer deck. And you

(12:56):
know, I don't know if you'refamiliar with that product, I am correct,
I am, I am. Howwhen did you put it on?
I had to put it on thespring and maybe a few months ago before
the weather got too hot, andit just looksah. I mean, it
just transformed the deck. It waskind of on his last legs. And
you know it's so sick that youcan't see all the you know, the

(13:18):
issues that were there when you justtry it. Yeah. So that product
has been out geez, probably fifteenyears now. They've changed the name on
it a couple of times. Butyou know, just for everybody's aware of
it, because every time I talkabout it, get a little a little
nervous about somebody somewhere is going tosay, I'm going to put that on

(13:39):
my deck. First. It's goingto last forever. That product is designed
for exactly what you used it for. If you have an older deck,
folks in the wood grain is raisedand there's splinters and it just needs some
help and some kind of resurfacing,if you that's what that's designed for.

(14:03):
And it's imperative that I was talkingabout directions before we went to break.
It's imperative that you follow the directionsfor that product step by step because you
talk about a product that is challengedto bite into that wood that would be
one just by its nature of beingso thick, So good good, Yeah,

(14:26):
it's a good product. Yeah. And so Gary, my big question
for you is, I had aweird situation come up where you know,
I'm in the Northeast and we've hadsome storms recently where the water is almost
coming sideways at the mouth, andso I noticed some staining on my drop
ceiling basement tiles and so it relativelynews. So I removed them and couldn't

(14:50):
figure out the source of the water. There's no pips above. Had a
plumber out and he couldn't figure itout either. And subsequently we went up
to my dining room which is rightabove it, and noticed that the wood
floors near the windows to the thatrear window were kind of bowing a little
bit, and there was some gives, So I don't know if I had
left the window open or if thewater was so strong it just somehow NA

(15:13):
got through the through the window anddown and then seet down into the basement.
But anyway, my big question foryou is now that I have you
know, it's maybe a five footby four foot area where the wood just
feels like it's come up a littlebit. And so I reached out to

(15:33):
a flooring guy about potentially having himsanded down because I had the floors redone
a few years ago, and hementioned to give it some time prior to
doing that. What are your thoughtson how to remediate that? Well?
I agree, I mean we allwant to fix it right away, and
I get that because I fall inthat capcor along with the rest of us

(15:54):
humans. Yeah, I wanted togo away now. But really, if
it is, you know, sowe've got two issues. We don't know
how it got there. If it'sa window issue where the window was left
open the subfloor got saturated and stainedthe tiles, I would say I would
wait six months before I did anything. And in some cases the problem will

(16:21):
go away, not always, notalways at all. But I would give
it six months or at least tillyou get the moisture content. You can
get the moisture content of that floor. There's a little tool that will tell
you what the moisture content is.And you know, I don't know what

(16:42):
the desired moisture content is. Youcan google that and find out. But
I'm going to say you want thatdown to about five to six percent.
And my guess is that's going tobe reading about fifteen to twenty percent.
So we got some time to getthat moisture out of there. Right now.
Should I run a dehumidifier to tryto either the flooring guy suggests that

(17:06):
I run it from the basement, you know, rather than on that same
level. Yeah, yeah, Imean that's going to help, or a
fan directly on it to help dryit. But a do humidifier would certainly
help. You could also not tryingto get you to buy all kinds of
tools, but you can get alittle humidity gauge and find out what the

(17:29):
humidity level is inside the basement andduring the summertime, ideally you're going to
be around fifty to fifty five percent. You know, if you start having
yeah, if you have humidity levelssixty five seventy percent. You know,
I'd definitely get that humidifier on andmaybe even hook up a fan where you're

(17:49):
actually blowing on that too, tohelp, you know, dry it out
along with the dehumidifier. Right,I will do that, And I'm glad
you mentioned the way he told meto wait as well. And you know,
it's one of those things where whenyou see an issue, it's hard
to give it time, but itsounds like that's a thing to do.
Yeah. Yeah. I had mybrother built a house in the Carolina Mountains

(18:11):
and about six months entry built ahouse as kid had a cooler sitting on
the kitchen floor which was wood, and it leaked and it was all warped,
and you know, he was goingcrazy, and I go like,
you're gonna have to wait six monthsand it went will do well? Not
all the time in his case,it did, but you know there's probably

(18:32):
as many cases that didn't. Soyou know, i'd certainly wait, though,
I really because if you sand itand it goes down, then you
got a problem in its opposite.Right. Yeah, Well, thank you,
Gary, You're always such a help. I appreciate it big, all
right, very good, Birch. Thanks thanks for the call. I appreciate
all right. You know another thing, there's always things to worry about,
and there's always things to fix, that's for sure, and we've talked about

(18:55):
a lot of it today. I'mgoing to have a special guest on here
in about a few minutes, andI hope if you're on hold, you
don't go away. Kind of listento this conversation too, because we're at
the hythea mosquito season right now.And so you got the West Now virus,
and now I know in my city, on the west side of the

(19:15):
city, there's been some discovery ofthe denog fever. And I think I'm
saying that right. I might bewrong. So we're gonna have a little
discussion about mosquitos and then we're gonnaget to uh oh, that's right,
that's tomorrow. We're gonna get ridof Yeah, we'll forget today. That's
timely too, that's right. Teresawill be joining us. All right now,

(19:37):
I'm straight. Thanks Danny. We'llcontinue at home with Gary Sullivan weekends.

it. We go at home withGary Solon. By the way, it
is time for our project of theweek, and joining me once again is
Teresa Britton and Teresa, how inthe world are you? I'm good?
How are you? I'm fine,I'm hot, and we've had a lot
of rain and now spiders. Imean, we got everything going on.

(22:56):
Oh right, right, I tellyou we've got the perfect solution for that
you do, which is also incase I ever have to give it an
award to you. It's like theproduct with the greatest name. We hear
that a lot. Actually, thereyou go. Yeah, they did a
great job with the name on thatone. I think too. So so

(23:21):
you know, yeah, tell usa little bit about this product to get
rid of spiders. I mean,do you have to have spiders to get
rid of them? Is it apreventter or give us a little story on
this. Yeah, you can.Actually it does a prevention too. So
what you can do if you haveexisting spiders, you can spray down all
the cobwebs that you have, orif you just want to start prevention,

(23:45):
you can spray it around the exteriorof your house and you can actually spray
on the interior also like any ofthe areas where you you know, prone
to have spiders in your basement, where you have you know, your boxes
and storage stuff up in your corners. I notice at my house, I
get them up in you know, the corners of all my ceilings right so

(24:06):
right down in the basement, thosejoyce pockets. There's always spider webs there,
absolutely, you know. And aswe get closer to fall, they
want to come in. They sothey come towards the house more and you'll
notice, like on your porch, stoops, in your lights, all those
different areas, you'll start to seethem build up. So it's a really
good idea to go ahead and youknow, start putting that out and you'll

(24:29):
get up to a europe protection fromspiders. When you spray that on your
areas that get a lot of likerainfall, you may have to reapply there
a little bit more often, okay, but it does a fantastic job.
Like I said, you don't haveto get out your ladders and you know,
try to hit those high spots youknow, like eaves and different things.
It sprays up to ten feet withthe spray that we have on there,

(24:51):
which is really nice. So sofolks. The name of the product
here it is did Miss Muffets Revenge. Great name. So spiders like to
build their webs wherever there's an airflow, because that's how they trap their prey,
right, That's how they trap theirfood. So you know, as

(25:12):
you're spraying they wet and forget ontothe webs and preventing spiders from getting into
your home. Pay attention to wherethese webs are. Because I mentioned the
joist pockets down in the basement. That's telling you there's an energy loss there
also, so you can kind of, you know, kill two spiders with

(25:33):
one stone. Excellent, so indooroutdoors and uh, just spray things down.
Huh, that's it. That's soundsolutelyyep. You just keep them away,
yep. So the Miss Muffets Revengeis a wet and forget product.
You hear me talk about wet andforget products all the time. And I'll

(25:55):
tell you what, you have theeasiest products in the world to use.
There's no question that, yeah,I mean that is the goal with our
brand is to create products number onethat work really well, so we put
a lot of active ingredient in them, and then number two make it easy
for the consumer. So you know, we're really trying to take any of

(26:15):
those tasks around the house and simplifythem to the best of our ability.
Well, the nice thing about it, I'm hearing you talk about this,
I'm thinking, well, that's goodbecause it looks like I don't have to
climb up on any ladders with aten foot spray the bottle itself. How
much coverage does this, you know, take take an account for if you

(26:37):
have like a ranch style home, you can get a full perimeter spray of
that. It's a sixty four Hounsbottle, so it's a pretty big bottle,
so you get a lot of coverage. And that's another thing that we
work on with all of our productsis making sure you're not having to buy
a you know, a ton ofproducts. So when you go in and
you buy a bottle, you're goingto be able to usually get the job

(26:57):
done. So we're probably you couldbe sprayed on multiple things. You'd be
spraying on wood, aluminum, vinyl, glass, no staining, no problems,
any precautions we need to take withthe miss Muffets revenge, No,

(27:17):
I just keep your pets and peopleaway from it until it dries. But
That's pretty much all you need todo if you get you know some if
you notice some residue, it's watersoluble, so you just can rinse it
off. If you notice it,you know that you got overspray. The
wind picks it up and carries itsomewhere you don't want it, So it's
really easy to clean up if thathappens. A lot of different types of

(27:41):
spiders. A lot of people arefreaked out by spiders. Does it take
care of all the different species? It takes care of most like brown recluse.
It doesn't do that. You couldn'tget to it anyway, right,
Yeah, I know, right,But your daddy long legs, then you
know your garden basic garden spiders andthings are anything that you know coming up

(28:03):
close to the house. I wouldthink your daddy long leg is probably your
most prolific spider that you're going tofind outside. They're a good spider,
but they're not good when they startmessing up your house, right exactly.
That's what I have noticed is theycome indoors, right, and I find
them a lot in the basements. You know. Good, Well, that's

(28:26):
where's miss Meffitt's revenge available? Wherecan I pick that up. Of a
lot of hardware stores carrying that now, they'll carry a lot of them.
Have it online so you can doyour ace. Amazon has it. We
saw quite a bit through there,so if you just hit our store locator
andforget dot com, you can definitelyfind it quicker. But again, yeah,

(28:48):
you can definitely get it online atthe different places. So how is
the mold and mildew issues outside thehouse. We've had a crazy year of
weather. I think we've had alot of heat, had a lot of
more We've had a lot of mildew, have we not right that you know?
It has been the perfect storm forblack and green stains definitely, so

(29:08):
yep, I tell people now isa really good time to get out and
spray all those different spots that youhave around the house, all the green
and black stains. You'll get thoseto clean up really quick. Since we've
had rain, you can see thoseclean up, but like in a week
wow, and sometimes just a coupleof days if you have some pretty good
rains. The black stains will takea little bit longer for you to you

(29:30):
know, to clean up. Butnow's a great time to get it on
there. That way, it's readyfor winter. It cleans up you know,
all winter long, especially if youhave some areas where you've had stains
on for years and years and years, it'll it'll totally take care of that
over the next few months. Anylimitations tersa on temperature. I know we've
talked a lot about that today duringthe show, did you Yeah, absolutely

(29:55):
so with our hose end product, what you want to do is you want
to make sure it's you know, fifty degrees at least, So that's not
a problem. That's not a problem. No. So and then what I
tell people is just to make sureif you're doing say your roof, the
best time to do it is inthe morning or that roof is head.
Yeah, it's had all evening tokind of cool down, because what we

(30:15):
don't want to have happen is haveit evaporate as quickly as it hits that
surface. We wanted to have sometime sitting on the service. So this
time of year, just make sure, like if you want to get up
in the morning, spray it downand make sure you do a really nice
coverage. And again, our products, it's up to like two thousand square
foot in that hose and bottle, which if you go out there and you

(30:38):
compare what's out on the market rightnow, a lot of these products are
giving you a three to eight hundredsquare feet in a bottle. So,
like I said, we really workhard to make sure we give you plenty
of product so you get all thecoverage that you need so you can get
the job done. So anyway,so just do good coverage and you're you're
good to go. And that's reallythe only thing with the temperature. We're

(30:59):
talking about all wet and Forget products, including the Miss Muffets Revenge, which
very timely. Now well all ofthem are timely, because the one we
haven't talked about is the Wet andForget shower and I still continue to use
it every week. And it isamazing with all the subway town, different
groutings and a shower in many ofthe homes, and we were scrubbing this

(31:25):
thing down, like every week,we start using a Wet and Forget shower
and spray and forget it. Youdo it really again. It just makes
that job so easy for people. You know, we're busy, we're out,
we're you know, we're running aroundat this time of year. A
lot of you know, parents aredoing you know, ball tournaments and different
things with the kids. You gotyour summer activities. It's so nice because

(31:47):
just once a week, all youhave to do is you go into the
bathroom, spray everything down after you'veall showered for the day, leave it
the next day, come back, rents it down and you are done and
you don't have to think about itagain. For yeah, and even with

entertain it. It's eight hundred eighttwo three eight two five five and let's
go to Jim. Jim, welcome, good morning, Good Sarah. I

(37:13):
am well, talk about timing.I have another Wet and Forget question.
I hadn't getting either green moss orsome sort of slime on a three year
old roof. And which wet andForget product should I use on that?
Well, they're exterior product, soit's wet and Forget exterior. And it
comes in different types types being oneis a hose end connector, which is

(37:38):
super easy spray's twenty twenty five feet. It's great for roofs. The other
is a concentrate and Jim the concentrateis you know, you got to mix
it with water and then it goesinto a tank sprayer. So you know,
probably don't want to use that andclimb up on the roof, but

(38:00):
yeah, the hose en would beideal. The second question I got John,
and again, you saved me moneyfor four decades here, that's awesome.
I built the house three years ago. I told the contractor that I
hired to do the the drywall onpaint us whatever paint you want except valspar
And then I say, was actingwhat he put on vals Bar two thousand,

(38:22):
which is a contractor greatst terrible paint. If I just splashed water in
the paint, it leaves a staint. Ye. So January Paints the company
in Akron that I used years agowhen I built my log home with great
results. See Kerry California Paints. Are you familiar with them? I'm not.
I'm not, but that's okay.I'm not familiar with a lot of
different kinds. Tell me about it. Okay, I've painted with that before.

(38:45):
The paints and a kryll of paintis thicks like pudding and goes on
with one coat. After you findthe drywall and I was able to wash
that paint for ten years after that. Yeah, good stuff. I just
wondered if you knew anything about this. I tell you what though. I
mean this seriously. I've been sellingpaint in stores to talking about paint for

(39:07):
a long long time. And thequality of paints today, if you buy
the you know, top of theline of good brand paints, they're unbelievable.
They really are in terms of scrubability, fade, resistance, coverage.
If there's been one product in mycareer that I look and say there has

(39:28):
been so many upgrades to it,it'd be paint. It'd be interior paint,
exterior paint. So you find agood one, stay with it.
I love it, got it?Thanks all right? Take care? Very
good. Yeah, and it's sotrue. I mean I tell everybody,
Gosh, if you're not a bighandy, do it yourself for and also
thinking about somebody that's just you know, getting their first house and want to

(39:52):
change the colors. That's a projectyou can certainly entertain doing because you know
you get good quality paints and goodquality tools. Certainly, you know you're
not gonna be at a level ofa professional painter, but you can do
that job and take your time andit'll look great. Let's go to James.

(40:14):
James welcome. Yeah, Gary, can I mention a product sure on
the show. Yeah. So it'sa company called Watco W A C.
I think they're owned by Rustolium.Yeah. So I bought some tea furniture

(40:35):
and it's outdoor furniture and it camewith a notification like the pros and cons
of various like stains and et cetera. And they said you could actually leave
it the way it is. That'strue, but it will it will gray
out. So I decided to gowith the walk coasting because it's clear and

(40:55):
it has a UV on there,so I thought, uh, and it
says to put two to three coatson there, which the court will cover
it. It's a it's it's justa table and like a chair that cushions
go on. So I put thefirst couple of coats on and it looked
good. But I'm questioning why amI putting multiple coats on there because it

(41:17):
seems like the first coat absorbed intothe wood and I just see the second
coat. It was just it's onthe surface, it's drying, but I
don't see it penetrating into the wood. Yeah, so why am I putting
two to three coats on? Well, that kind of surprised me when you
said two or three coats. Firstof all, teak furniture is very,

(41:38):
very dense. It's it's even achallenge in some cases to get the teak
oil to penetrate into teak. That'skind of one of the reasons they've used
teak in different places where you wouldrequire less maintenance. I don't know why.

(42:04):
The only thing I can surmise isif you wanted to take teak oil.
And I'm also a little surprised ithas good UV protection on the waco.
But you know, to get multiplecoats, you're going to get a
finish, so it's not all goingto penetrate down in there. So I

(42:28):
don't know if they recommend three coatsbecause somebody wants to create a finish a
clear protectant. But in my book, if you had a teak deck and
there are teak decks and mahogany decks, it's a one code process, you
know. I mean it's a onecode process. So from in the past

(42:52):
it's said to apply with the brush. But in the past when i've done
staining, not on teek, butlike hardwood molding and stuff I've used like
a double lot or a triple lot. Do you recommend that on the teak
If I wanted to put another coaton there, and you're talking about because

(43:14):
it's a surface coat, you woulduse like a triple lot to just allow
it to bond to itself. Yeah, to like get it into the grain
if you will. Well, Ithink you're kind of strain in the territory
that I wouldn't be strained into.First of all, I don't mean know,

(43:36):
I'd have to do a little moreresearch. But on the Waco oils
and it's clear and it's for outdoor, I don't know why you would put
a second coat on there. Ireally don't. I could see because the
Waco oils also can be used indoors. I could see if it was used
indoors, And if it was usedindoors, I probably would use a two

(43:58):
hot steel wool or a six hundredgrit of wet dry sandpaper. But you
know, for adhesion. But ifyou're putting more than one code on there,
you're definitely gonna build a film up. And especially because of the density
that you're gonna have with that teakwood. So yeah, if you're gonna
do it, i'd definitely use somethingas a you know, the six SoC

(44:22):
and yeah, good luck. Letme know how that makes out too.
Really, I'm just curious, butteak is great, great wood. All
right, we'll continue with your calls. You're at home with Gary Sullivan.
