(00:29):
Well it's a weekend. Welcome, you're at home with Gary Salvin. Thanks
for joining me getting a few thingsdone this weekend, and if you'd like
to join us and discuss what you'reworking on, feel free to do so.
It's eight hundred eight two three eighttwo five five and back to the
phones we go. We have PatrickPatrick. Welcome fine, Gary, how
(00:49):
are you doing fine? Thank yougood. Two quick questions. One,
I have a forty year old slidingdoor out to my deck on the inside,
luminum plaid on the outside. Loveto repaint that aluminum plaid, And
don't know what the prep is?And do I use a brush or a
(01:11):
roller or whatever? Yeah, wellyou could use either. There is a
probably the prep is just good andclean. And when you're painting aluminium and
it was a factory finish, there'sprobably some oxidation that's been going on.
(01:32):
So we want to use something, you know, a little bit stronger than
just a powdered soap or something alongthose lines. I prefer to use something
like a tri sodium phosphate. Andyou can get tri sodium phosphate where it's
phosphate free now, but it's termedTSP tri sodium phosphate, be soil acts,
(01:53):
that kind of thing, and justgive it a good scrubbing. It'll
remove pretty much much is pretty muchall the oxidation. You may have to
scrub it a little bit with ascrub brush, use some drop closter doesn't
get on the floor. It canbe a little messy, but you get
all that oxidation off, and uh, you're pretty good to go. As
(02:15):
far as painting it, You're you'regonna have some choice of different paints.
You can use a regular alcut acrylicenamel, or you can use there's a
real super duper super good one. It's a Sherman Wis product that's called Emerald
(02:35):
Euthane trim enamel. It truly lookslike and brushes out like an old fashioned
oil base. So if you wantthat really smooth texture like a factory paint,
I would use that one. Andyou know, use that with a
polyester brush or one of those littletiny four inch rollers, not a sponge
(03:00):
roller, but a short mohair roller. Uh you could do that and and
uh no prime or just I canput that right and does that Emerald paint
coming like a mad or a youknow, like a low machine finish.
Um it comes in a satin.I don't know about a flat. If
(03:23):
you want a flat, you cango with the regular Emerald exterior paint,
which is which is self priming, and it's a little bit. Uh.
I hate to use the word texturebecause there's not much texture to it,
but it's not super smooth like aporcelain. Okay. And then my uh
(03:49):
second question was you were talking aboutspray or is the guy who's talking about
spray and the shutters and my neighborssprayed his woods fence a couple of years
ago, and I noticed on oneside of my eyes the overspray on my
final sighting. So my question isnow I notice it, my wife and
nobody else does, but I noticedit. How do I get rid of
(04:10):
that? I mean, do Ijust scrub that with soap and water?
No, once it's dried, it'sdried. So you would use do you
know was it in a solvent basedproduct or was it a an acrylic is
solid color water based stain? Okay? Okay? So what I would use
(04:33):
is I would use I'd probably uselike a blue Bear paint stripper. And
and I say that haltingly because youcould also use products like goof off Goo
Gone, but you're going to bescrubbing a lot. And so you know
(04:57):
the blue Bear paint, and there'salso one call Peel Away. It's another
really good safe paint stripper. It'snot gonna hurt vinyl sighting, but always
test it down in the corner.Okay, but that color is usually baked
through the product. It might removesome there's even oxidation on vinyl siting.
(05:20):
It might remove some of that.So it might kind of clean it up
a little bit. But if youput that on, it's a lot slower
acting than the old fashioned paint strippers. So that particular paint is not a
real super durable or stain not superdurable. So I'd paint it on there.
(05:40):
I'd try and do it early inthe morning or late evening where it's
kind of cool and not a hotfinish, and you could actually even do
it like five o'clock in the eveningand then come back. Let's sit on
there for about two or three hoursand this time of year, and then
go wipe it off with a wetrag. So don't use my you know
(06:02):
like powerwasher on a low setting, and I don't think you'll take it off.
You can try it. No,I mean like to wipe off.
Oh yeah, you could. Youjust got to be careful where that's going
though. It is a you know, it's liquefied that paint. So if
you got brick underneath it, you'regonna paint the brick if you do that.
(06:26):
I see, okay, all right, So I got to wipe it
off, all right, Yeah,I got about I got about you know,
twenty linear feet and it goes upabout ten feet, so I got
a decent sized area that I haveto clean. You know what I would
do too, is I think Iwould test before I really got into the
whole project. I would get likea quart of it, and I would
(06:48):
test like a four foot strip downat the bottom and just see how it
removes it. Just you know, you'll you'll learn a lot by using it.
But sure there's no reason it wouldn'tremove it. But these new age
safe strippers, you know, likeif you had multiple coats. Somebody listened
(07:10):
to me right now, might betrying to remove latex paint and there's multiple
coats and it's been there for fifteenyears, you know, you might have
to leave that on overnight. I'mguessing that that's going to come off relatively
easy. And you put a youput a coat over that. It's supposed
to be. The coat is asthick as the coat that you're removing,
so it sounds like you could puta pretty thin coat on it. And
(07:34):
if you do it and minimize theevaporation, that's why I'm talking about morning
or evening, because you don't wantit to dry and evaporate. You want
to stay wet for two hours. So there's some there's some getting used to.
So I'd start with just a fourfoot strip and see how it does.
See, you know, see whatyou learn, and then tackle the
(07:56):
project. And I can buy thisat a big box story start. I
don't know if they have that brand. I know they have it at ACE
Hardware, but I'm sure a bigbox store would have another type of uh
you know, uh environmentally friendly stripper, and just from a control use,
(08:16):
that's what I would use. Terrific, Thank you, Gary, all right,
you bet appreciate it. All right, let me give you the phone
number. You can grab a line. We got the lines there wide open.
It's eight hundred eight two three eighttwo five five and uh we'll talk

So I want to thank you forclarifying. All right, thank you
for clarifying. You're welcome, Jerry, welcome, Hey Gary, thanks for
having me call. You're quite welcome. So I've told you a few months
(12:37):
that I'm the schmock who has thepeter Wood quad. It's a way to
garage doors, okay, saying andthen put you all right, and you
said, oh, well you'd callme before you did it, all right,
(12:58):
that was wrong. Well, sochemically stripping the polyurethane off, and
I was, well, le's thanimpressed with the result of process. Now
is fanning it down to the wood, and I wonder what product I should
put on? Yeah, yeah,so yeah, just for everybody knows,
(13:22):
we kind of covered a little bitthis not about a garage door, but
we were talking about front doors todayand yeah, the polyurethane, which is
the number one protected sold. Okay, everybody, polyrthane is a catch all.
But polyurethane does not do well againstthe UV rays of the sun.
(13:46):
I'm just explaining this to everybody else. That's why I said, wish you'd
have called me first, because thereare products that are your thanes that have
wonderful UV protected. If you wantto clear coat and you wanted to be
protected like a your athane, youwould use a marine eu athane or a
(14:11):
spar your a thane. Well that'swhat I used. I use the helmsman
spar ere thing. Okay, allright, and and it's at it turned
white and plate and peeled. Okay, Well that shouldn't have done that.
But uh yeah, So anyway,we got it off, So what do
(14:33):
you want to do to it?Go ahead? I was gonna say,
what do you want to do toit? You've got it off, like
I'd like this. I'd like torestain it and then put a career coat
over top of it. I lookedat the super deck at Sherwin Williams and
they only common colors, which Icould do if I get it down to
(14:54):
the bear wood. But you know, I it sounds like you looked at
the solid color stain though. Yeah. And I talked to the I guess
the store manager. If you said, well, if you if you get
the clear it's water base and itwon't protect me. The the the oil
(15:22):
base all comes in. Uh youknow, it's Uh, I guess it's
some sort of solid liquid solid.I guess it's oil base. But yeah,
and I got I got a productat home depot, uh that is
uh an oil base and it saysit's clear, although it's kind of got
(15:45):
a little yellow cast to it.And it's called Olympic Maximum Waterproofing Ceiling.
Yeah. Are you familiar with thatone? I'm I'm not. There's so
many brands out there right now.But I you know, I was going
to even suggest a cabot has awood stain and the key words really,
(16:07):
I mean, nothing in a clearstain is going to last for a real
long time. I mean, ifit gets direct sunlight, you're going to
get three years out of it andthen you're But but you don't have to
do any prep except just clean itand then put another code on there.
So I don't even see the needto come back and put a clear protecting
(16:32):
over it. I just use anexterior if you want a stain, look,
I would just use an exterior housestain and uh and be done with
it, or a deck stain beforeyou suggest it a deck stain. Yeah,
and maybe that's the route that I'mgoing to use. But again,
(16:52):
what product would you recommend. Well, there's the top of the line.
So here here's the issue. Sothe acrylics or the water base, they
don't they have a hard time bitingon the finish. I don't know what
that, employment wise, is notgoing to protect it. Water based stains
(17:15):
are going to be more fade resistantand stand up to the sun better than
any stain you can put on,including the solvent based. Okay, so
I don't know what the I don'tknow what the meaning with that comment that
she made or he made in thestore. However, water based stains have
more difficulty biting onto the finish,so you would have to clean it and
(17:41):
then I would use a deck brighteneror a wood brightener, which is an
oxolic acid which opens up the poresof the seater and then you apply the
stain, and you know, ifyou use a water base, there's one
called Defy fy Defy wood stained, not cheap. I would definitely use the
(18:06):
wood brightener on it. It's atwo coat system. It's wet on wet,
so you you know, you doit, and you know ten square
foot and then you just redo theten square foot. They've got a nice
little applicator pad that's probably going togive you the longest life, and really
what they claim is it's going togive you a years more life than any
brand on the market, and theygot the data to show that. I'm
(18:30):
not saying you got to use that, but I'm just showing that would be
what I would consider the top ofthe line. A lot of the Bear
products that you mentioned, I wouldn'thave any problem with that. I'm not
sure about the Olympic if that's solventbased or you know, whether it's a
an acrylic or whether it's an I'llget acrylic. They even make a blend
(18:51):
and how much oil base, Yeah, it's what Well, after I got
home, I looked it up,looked up reviews, and the reviews were
not good. So I'm kind ofgetting kind of getting a little this was
turning into a labor of Yeah,I think if I was gonna recommend,
(19:14):
I would recommend you can go tothe A store, take a look at
that cabin product that's a solvent basethat I'm speaking of, and then take
a look at the DeFi wood stain. You can check that out online at
DeFi Woodstain dot com. We'll continuewith your calls at home with Gary Sullivan.

of the iron, you're at homewith Gary Sullivan talking a little home improvement,
as we do each and every weekend. By the way, just a
reminder, I'm in the chair toanswer these questions from nine am till noon
Eastern time, Saturday and Sunday. All right, let's get back to the
phone calls. And we have eded welcome, let's as stop. Yes,
(23:00):
yes, Hi, We've had alot of rain here in southwestern Minnesota
since in the April, and Ihave water in the basement and I cut
I have cut out sheet rock, and I wanted to know if I can
(23:22):
do dry open dry cell foam betweenthe studs where I got that cut out.
And we're doing that for what forinstallation? Well, hopefully the waterproofing
also more so, well the opencell open cell foam is not going to
(23:45):
stop the water. What about closedseal? I may have meant that this
closed cell foam Is it going tostop the water? How much water you
got coming in? I mean,is it is it streaming? Is it
just a little leak. It's inmy closet. But it was you know,
we got six inches of rain intwo nights and I was soaking it
(24:07):
up with towels. I couldn't keepahead of it, so so I just
st heck with it. See whathappened in the morning, and it seemed
to be dry. Okay, Iwas surprised. But the wall seems wet.
On the bottom the brick. There'ssome shifting of the block. As
I see there's a hole in theblock. We can see daylight that that
(24:32):
is above the ground. And I'mthinking to foam that too. Well,
the foam isn't going to help youat all. I mean, you got
okay, it's not going to helpyou at all. Open cell foam is
it's a it's a breathable product.Foam is not going to hold back water,
and it's to hold back water vapor, not water. So a closed
(25:02):
cell phone will hold back water vapor. Open cell phone will not hold back
even the water vapor. It'll allowthe water vapor to come into the home
and then you'll control with the deumidifire. But if it's actually running water where
you're mopping it up with a towel, it's it's it's a bigger problem.
(25:22):
In other words, your water table'seither too high and it's and it's coming
up between the floor and the wall, or there's a crack in the wall
which is allowing the water to comethrough and the problem starts outside. So
it's about water control on the outsideof the home. But having said that,
(25:44):
ed and this, this is whatI'm trying to encourage you to do.
Having said that, if you've gota block foundation and the block is
bowing, it's shifting, got ahole in it you can see outside,
that's a structural problem. You're reallygoing to have to get a water proofing
company in there to really assess thesituation or a structural engineer, because you've
(26:07):
got a structural issue which is causedby the water on the outside and around
the foundation not being properly controlled. So it's not going to be repaired with
anything that would be easy. Yep, Okay, I got American Waters out
of Pine Island, Minnesota coming outthe nineteenth Okay, well, feel free
(26:33):
to call me back and discuss whattheir plan is to repair it. But
I think there's a couple of thingsgoing on there, and sometimes and I
say this a lot, ed andI mean it. Sometimes it could be
as simple as a gutter that's cloggedin or a pipe that's disconnected from the
(26:55):
downspout, but it's been like thatfor a while, or you would have
those other structural issues. It wasmy own fault. I thought they were
gonna moved on. So I hadnight down spout turned in right to the
foundation. We got inch and seventenths at day night, and I added
a lot of water next time.Second time, the gutter was plugged,
and I had pretty but we gottwenty some inches of rain since the end
(27:19):
of April, right all through May, every other day almost right. Well,
you know the old adage when people'sbasements leak, is the old edage?
Is it only it only leaks whenit rains real hard. And that's
true, that's true. But nowwe've got some other foundation issues. I
think you have to be addressed. All righty, thank you much for the
(27:44):
call. I appreciate it. Ihope that helps. And feel free,
I mean those are projects. Feelfree to get a couple estimates and sit
down and learn the process. There'sa lot of ways to go. Well,
not even halfway of taking care ofthe problem. Sometimes, and I've
had many times I've talked about this. Sometimes as I talk about I get
(28:07):
emails back and said, you knowwhat, the pipe coming off the down
spout under the ground was disconnected andliterally solved the problem by digging up that
pipe and replacing the pipe. Othertimes, you know, the issue is
much bigger. We have a watertable problem. We have a cracking of
foundations. In this case, youcan see outside from the basement. That's
(28:30):
usually a dead giveaway. We gota pretty big, serious problem. All
right, Payson, welcome, goodmoney, then speak with you. Good
money, Good morning, How areyou doing fine? I have a fifties
ranch in Boston suburbs. Uh huh, and so my back card between the
(28:53):
bedrooms is about twenty feet long byabout thirty three thirty four inches wide,
and I want to update it withsome some LED's surface surface LEDs and the
ceiling. How many would you suggestfor twenty feet? Well, what kind
(29:15):
of surface lighting? I mean inLED lighting, there's about a million choices.
Now, Well, the circular circulardevices that you put in your home
depot sells them with an adjust witha variable switch on them for different Yeah,
okay, So can lights you're talking, Well, they're not cans,
(29:36):
they're flat LEDs. Okay, allright, I'd say the replacement, the
replacement for what we used to usefor Yeah. Yeah, you could probably
find a calculation on there, butguess and I'd say somewhere between how long
is it again thirty feet only twentyfeet on twenty feet? Four three or
(29:56):
four three or four yeah, butI thought three yeah, or what might
be overkilled? Do you have anyuh suggestions on diameter? It's uh,
well, I think that's going toalso I think that's also going to get
into the calculation of how many youneed. That's why I said you might
(30:17):
want to pick out the light thatyou're trying to get first, and then
I know you got a selector onthere for the amount of Calvin units that's
going to be the brightness, andthen you're going to also have different wattages,
so you know, yeah, Ithink what I would do is I
would go pick out my lights, the one I like, and then they'll
(30:42):
they'll be all kinds of information onthat package. I just went through the
same thing. I was putting insome LED lights in some in some closets
and you know, and all thatinformation, quite honestly, is either on
the website or on the package forthe calculation. But you know, pick
out the light first and say,you know, that's the one that's really
(31:04):
gonna look nice in that hole, and then it'll talk about you know,
the Kelvin units. You can justflip that switch from daylight, the soft
light to whatever. And I evenchange some of mine in different closets.
The brightness look different depending on thepaint that was in there. But find
(31:26):
out what light you want in uh, the wattages they're available, and I
think you'll come up with your answer, but it's gonna be about three or
four. Okay, all right, listening to Thanks so glad you're here.

(35:57):
Okay? And do you have anelectric natural gas? Electric? Okay?
But I have a basement, thefirst flower and a second floorer in a
bathroom in h Yeah, kitchen andthe basement and the first flower, but
just bedrooms and yeah, second floor. So you're going to do individual ones.
(36:25):
Well, that's what I was thinking. Well, here's my opinion.
You asked me my opinion. Otherpeople may have another opinion. If I
was all ready to tell you great, I think you'd be silly not to
do it. But if you don'thave gas, either propane or natural gas,
(36:50):
I'm not a big fan of thetank lists for electric water heaters.
I think they're expensive. I thinkthey're you're gonna need probably anywhere between a
fifty and sixty amp circuit wherever thatheater is placed. Your gallons permitted is
(37:12):
not as high as I mean thegas now is up to nine and thirteen
gallons per you know permit. Imean you got plenty of hot water.
Electric not so much. But thereis something that I think you should consider
rather than just a regular electric tank. Is they have high Bred electric tanks
(37:35):
now, which are the only electricwater heaters that get the energy star rating.
So they're very, very efficient, and with three people it would be
it would really be perfect. Andif you had a bunch of guests over,
you can actually switch it back tothe regular electric mode. What it
(37:57):
does is it uses this slower recoveryto get the energy star rating on the
Highbred and it's a heat pump onthe top of that electric water heater.
I'd recommend that not necessarily the tanklesson electric. Okay, Well, I
(38:19):
thank you very much for you intovery good thanks Dad. All right,
and from there we go to Kathy. Kathy, welcome, Hi, Hello,
hello, yes, hello, doyou hear me? I can hear
you? Okay, About a monthago you had advertised about a spouting and
(38:44):
gave a phone number. A spouting, you know that that you can it
keeps out the debris. The onlything I've talked about keeping out debris is
not a spout, but it's abrush that's put into the gutters. Okay,
(39:06):
what would that be? What's thephone number and the name? I
don't have the phone number off thetop of my head. It's called gutter
brush. Was that it? Ithink? So? Yeah? So what
gutter brush is is it is likea giant bottle brush. Okay, and
(39:27):
the giant bottle brush lays in thegutter itself. So there's different sizes.
You know, you have to knowthe width of the gutter itself. Most
of them are five inches, butnot all of them, and you know
they come in three foot lengths.I have the phone number for you,
mister Sullivan. Okay, well goahead and give the lady the gutter brush
(39:51):
phone number. Eight eight eight ninethree. Okay, okay, thank you,
all right, very good, andthat's all right, thank you?
Take care? All right. Yeah, it's not a spouting, I got
it. But we got hear thegutter brush number of things, Danny.
(40:13):
All right, let's go to Mary. Mary welcome. Thank you. Yes,
and got a lot of knowledge fromit. Thank you. I have
a question in regards to something Iheard yesterday on the radio. We get
a rebroadcast of your Morning Hill,so we can't call it. Okay,
you said something about a paint thatlasted twenty five years. It's not a
(40:37):
paint, it's a coating, soit is a little bit different. It's
warranted for twenty five years. Andthe name of the product was that we
talked about yesterday was called Rhino ShieldRhino Shield, and that's applied by the
(40:59):
Rhino Shield. It's a franchise that'sacross the the country and you can use
it on aluminum sighting, vinyl siding, wood Stuccoh, but it is it
is a coding more expensive than paign. Well can you play it on asphalt
sighting? Sure? Sure you can, Yes, great, And where do
(41:24):
you usually get this rhino Shield?Well you can't. You can't buy it.
You've got to contact the Rhino Shield. So there's different franchises in cities,
So I don't know what city you'rein, don't know if there's a
Rhino Shield. You can go totheir websites rhinoshield dot com. It'll have
a list of all their franchises acrossthe United States. You can put in

a phone book or something along thoselines, or I don't know. That's
uh. Danny's going to look upRhino Shield and I'll let you know what
(42:10):
city you'll live in, Mary,Grand Rapids, Grand Rapids. Okay,
just call eight hundred five three eightsix eight nine eight six eight nine,
Yes, ma'am, thank you,And do you know what the cost is?
Approximately usical by the gallon. Itdoesn't go by the gallon. They're
(42:36):
going to have to come out andtake a look. If you It's like
I said, they apply the product. So you're buying the product, you're
buying the warranty, you're buying theapplication. And if you were going to
hire a painter to paint that house, it's going to be about two times
to three times the cost of whata painter would cost to apply a you
(43:00):
know, a latex house paint. And be honest with you, you know
it's a it has multiple benefits. If you want to have your house painted,
you can go to Sherman williams'llrecommend a painter. You can buy
the gallons. If you're gonna Rhinoshield, call that number. See if
there's a franchise. They'll come andthey'll give you a bid on the house.
(43:22):
The the UH Rhino shield again comeswith a twenty five year warranty.
It's a thicker coating. It addsto UH the energy efficiency even of your
home. So there's many benefits there. All right, Mary, thank you
much for the call. I appreciateit. And well that's going to kind
