(00:00):
Well, I know one of thethings we all battle this time of year,
also as we get outside, isa little bit of painting. Maybe
I'm not talking about your whole houseor anything, but you know, maybe
you got a baker's rack on thepatio or deck and it's rusted and needs
a little touch up paint. Oryou've noticed the flashing on the roof is

(00:20):
rusted, or the old lamppost isrusted, and you're looking for some paint
that's going to hold up. Acouple of suggestions I'd like to make obviously,
when you're battling rust on metal, that you're going to paint in the
normal way. I say normal,The most accepted way is to get sandpaper,

(00:47):
wire brush and remove the rust thebest you can, and the better.
The more you remove, the better. It is always the case,
right and then put If it's verylight rust, you would then apply a
gray metal primer. If it's stillheavily rusted but you've removed all the scaling

(01:11):
and it's a little pitted, butyou got most of the rust, I
would use a damp red which isa dark flat red metal primer that would
be considered heavy rusted areas, Soyou got two types of metal primers.
After that has been metal primed, you would then come back with an enamel,

(01:34):
an exterior enamel, and go overthat primed metal and you would refurbish
the look of said thing that you'retrying to get painted up. But there's
other options. And you know,I'm all about easy, I profess to
be, but I also professed Iwant to do it right, but I'm

(01:57):
going to take the time to painta rusted metal lamppost. I don't want
to visit that for five or tenyears. I want to be done right,
but I want to invest the smallestamount of time as I can to
do it right. I think you'reright there with me, So let me

(02:20):
suggest this. If it's just asurface rust, it's not scally, it's
not chunks of rust falling off it. There is a product out in the
marketplace. You can find an autostar stores, hardware stores. It's called
rust reformer. There's one called rustneutralizer. It comes in a brush product,

(02:44):
it comes in a spray product. If it's heavily rusted. And you
still like where I'm going with this, you can wire, brush or scrape
off they're peeling rust. And youknow, what I mean. I'm that's
heavily rusted. Right to scrape offthe loose stuff. If it's just light

(03:05):
rust, there is no loose stuff, and you take this rust neutralizer and
you spray the rusted area. Thisis not paint. This is a chemical
and when it comes in contact withiron oxide rust, it creates a chemical
reaction and seals the rust into themetal. After its dried, and it'll

(03:34):
tell you what the pain time is. But after its dried or the dry
time. After it's dry, thatrust neutralizer has sealed the rust in and
functions as a primer. If you'refollowing along, we skip the step maybe

(03:55):
two after that has turned that russblack and is functioning as a primer.
You put your finished coat on there. Done so that makes that project a
little bit easier. Now there's anotherway to take care of say a rusted

(04:17):
flashing or a rusted wrought iron porchrail. There is a product. Now
I don't know, this kind ofborders on maybe not real easy. Okay,
easier, but this one's a tadchallenging. There is a product out

(04:39):
there that is called hammer right. The finish looks like hammered metal. If
you're still interested in that look, keep listening. This product has fiber in
it and is a very very veryhard coding. You can take the hammer

(05:01):
right paint. It comes in limitedcolors, maybe eight. And you don't
want to do this on a ninetydegree day. You do not want to
do this in direct sunshine because it'llbe trying to like paint bubblegum. It's
not going to be a pleasant day, cloudy, cool, perfect, So

(05:26):
that's the little stipulation. You don'thave to do anything to the rust.
Obviously, if the rust is peelingoff and fallen on the ground, you
want to get a putty knife orsomething to scrape that off. But if
it's heavily rusted and intact, youdon't have to do anything. You can
take the hammer right paint and apaint brush and it's thick. Pain again

(05:54):
dries very quickly. It's very thick. It's got fibers in it. You
don't want to do it in directSome might don't want to do it when
it's ninety degrees. Read the directions, pay attention to them. But you
got a nice seventy five day overcast, not raining, Bang the hammerry paint
over the rusted area. That's it. Let it dry one coat, that's

(06:16):
it. It is dry in aday, and it fully cures. If
I'm not mistaken, it's like twoweeks. So we get harder and harder,
and harder and harder. It encapsulatesthe rust. So I know a

(06:36):
lot of us we have, youknow, porch railings and different things outside
lamppost I said, metal objects thathave rust on them. And there's a
you know, there's a couple ofideas on different product combinations that you can

(06:57):
use with varying degrees of simplicity andvarying degrees of price, that you might
want to look into.
