Speaker 1 (00:03):
She's real find my form.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
Nice, good afternoon, and welcome to the car show.
Speaker 1 (00:24):
So gorgeous Saturday afternoon. No, I'm just drinking. Uh it's uh,
it's it's a pretty dismal weather we've had here, so
I hope everybody's doing well. Man, it's uh, well, first
of all, I should start out to as well, you know,
taking your car questions, and I'm gonna call five one
(00:44):
three again, five one three seven, five hundred. But yeah,
it's nowhere near uh gorgeous Saturday afternoon. Right, So we
had some pretty I didn't think it was gonna be
as bad as you know. I'm like, oh, okay, we've
got some wins, we got some rain, it'll be fine.
But my new shop, Auto Forum, was out of power.
(01:08):
And they called me at two and they're like, hey, Dane,
we're out of power. I'm like oh, and I'm like okay.
So I'm talking to one of my my parts driver.
I said, hey, well, Ridge will be fine. Ridge has not,
I said, I've been there for twenty five years, and
Ridge hasn't been out of power for more than twenty
five minutes or thirty minutes for twenty five years. Right, Well,
(01:28):
two hours later, they call me, hey, Ridge is out
of power. I'm like, you gotta be kiddne me. I'm
like all right. About fifteen minutes later, my wife sayes, hey,
I got a problem. I'm like, what's your problem? Well,
I'm locked out of the house. The garage door doesn't
work because we don't have any power. I'm like, jeez. So, uh,
you know, having three boys, who are you know, twelve, ten,
(01:52):
and seven have grown up in the era of television
and YouTube and video games, right, so when you have
three boys under your roof with absolutely nothing to do,
with nothing but darkness, it becomes pretty challenging. Uh, we're
getting through it, but still don't have any power at
(02:12):
any location. Still don't have power at home and you
just don't uh and uh earlier this year or I'm sorry,
last year, we updated. I thought, uh, you know, going
to a tankless hot water heater was the way to go,
and uh so, uh yeah, I had to take a
very nice cold shower this morning. It was it was,
(02:34):
it was wonderful. But uh, we're getting through it. But anyways,
celebrated today. I Monday, I did celebrate my birthday. I
turned forty on Monday, so it's kind of a mildstone
where I gonna we were gonna have a party at
our house tonight, but unfortunately we don't. We don't have
(02:57):
any power, so we had to move the venue. But uh,
you know, kind of basking. The last couple of days
of thirty nine, got to play golf on on my birthday,
so that was that was fun. But yeah, so, uh,
it's been a it's been a it's been a challenging week,
so uh, but we're getting through it. So again, I'm
(03:18):
here to take all your car questions, and I'm well
call five one, three, seven, fifty five hundred, love to
hear from you. I'm here till two o'clock, love to
hear from you, so please give me call. So let's
go to the phones. We've got Rose. Hey, Rose, welcome
to the car show. How can I help?
Speaker 3 (03:34):
Yes, I've got a twenty eleven Hyundai Sonata and there's
kind of a musty, moldy smell in the car, and
my mechanic check the air filters line and he said,
places like AutoZone have some kind of an enzyme thing
put in your car and seal it up and it'll
go through the ducks. But he said, be sure you
get an enzyme, and I wanted to know if you
(03:54):
have a recommendation for that product.
Speaker 1 (03:58):
I so, he you said air filtered. You mean he
checked the cabin air filter.
Speaker 3 (04:03):
Yes, yes, and that's fine. And he said, you know
you don't want to cover up if you go to
AutoZone gets big shorts and enzyme. He said, he thinks
it's like a defoulger. You can put in the stopholder
and turn the car on and it'll circulate through the ducks.
Speaker 1 (04:18):
Yeah, yeah, so yeah, So what happens is that the uh,
the box itself, that where the evaporator is, you know,
leaves and debris can get in there, and then that
you know, obviously you know when air conditionings on, it'll
it'll drip and leak and there's moisture and yes, there
will be molding there. I don't have a particular enzyme
that I recommend or a particular product that I recommend.
(04:42):
I mean, I'll be honest with you. Through the winner.
You know, that water and that debris that's at the
bottom of the the HVAC box, I mean it'll probably
it'll dry up and it will go right. Now, we'll
come back again next year. But you know, you know,
it will drive because I mean, obviously we're going into winter,
(05:03):
you're not gonna be using the air conditioning, so the
the debris that's at the bottom of that box will
dry out and you won't smell it anymore. There is
a product and I can't remember the name of it,
that we buy that will It's kind of like it
smells like eucalyptus and we'll we'll spray the actual cabin
(05:25):
air filter itself with that and that will help kind
of break down. But I don't, I don't, I'm and
I'm so sorry.
Speaker 4 (05:32):
I don't.
Speaker 1 (05:32):
I don't know the name of the product. I just
know that we buy it on Amazon. But no, I mean,
there's no particular product that I recommend. But why it's
making that, Why that you're having that kind of musty
odor smell, It's just because you know, again, leaves and
debris and whatnot get into that the you know, the
the evaporate or the the bottom of the box for
(05:53):
it drains and uh, it's to remove it would be
extremely expensive. But yeah, well I'm not.
Speaker 3 (06:01):
Real concerned about the smell. I'm more concerned about it's
making my nose run more. I think it's an allergy thing.
And I think the air conditioner was run mored this
hot summer, so maybe there's more moisture in the car.
Speaker 4 (06:13):
But I stopped it.
Speaker 3 (06:15):
Autos and the young man didn't know of anything with
enzymes or anything that was not just a cover up.
I'm not interested in the cover up. And so your
advice is good. With winter coming on and it'll probably
dry out.
Speaker 1 (06:26):
Yeah, it'll dry out, but I understand, yeah, it'll dry out.
You'll be fine.
Speaker 3 (06:31):
Thank you, You're welcome.
Speaker 1 (06:32):
You have a great day, you too, Bye bye bye.
You know, that's something that we deal with quite a bit.
I mean I shouldn't say quite a bit. I mean
even you know, I mean even my own vehicle. You'll
get a little bit of a musty smell. And it's
just that, you know, and that's why it's important, okay,
to replace and check your cabin air filter. Now, most
(06:55):
cabin air filters, you know, a lot of people don't
realize that they're there, but a lot of cabin air filters,
or all cars nowadays, all your new cars have cabin
air filters. And what it does is it filters the
air going into the cabin right, So it's not your
air filter. The air filter is for the engine. That's
what filters the air that goes into the engine. The
cabin air filter is what filters the air that's coming
(07:17):
in from outside, and you know, allows fresh air and
you know, debris or whatnot to not come into the
cabin of the vehicle. Now, these filters are recommended to
be replaced every thirty thousand miles. Okay, some are fifteen.
Each manufacturer is a little different, but I mean thirty
(07:37):
thousand miles is a pretty good standard.
Speaker 5 (07:40):
Right.
Speaker 1 (07:41):
You can do it a little earlier if you want.
But again, what it does is it filters the air
that's coming outside. Now, again, these filters get plugged up
and again that's the air that you're breathing inside your vehicle. Right.
And again it's just a standard maintenance item. It's not
horribly expensive. In fact, I think I talked about it
last week. We had a filter that we need to
(08:02):
replace for the battery for a Prius. Not the it
was for it was underneath the seat and it was
for I don't know, one of the battery one of
the many batteries that are in a Prius. But you know,
these are these are maintenance items that should be changed,
so and and again depending upon the year, making models
of your vehicle. A lot of these filters you can
(08:24):
do at home. You know, there's probably a video out
there that you can find that will show you how
to do it. And again, I mean, you wouldn't believe
the products that we pull out of the out of
the cabin filters. I mean, mice get in there. You know,
you get peanuts, you get leaves, you get you know,
pine needles, and in fact, one time we even pulled
(08:45):
a snake skin out of one, which was pretty daunting,
pretty nasty mice. A lot of a lot of times
we'll get in there and kind of make a bed
of it. And but again what she was saying is, hey, look,
you know he checked the filter and the filter was good.
So most likely it's at the bottom of the you know,
the where the evaporator leaks. But you know that again,
(09:10):
that's uh, the cabin filter should be replaced every thirty
thousand miles. You know, you can do it earlier if
you'd like, especially if you're you've got allergies or whatnot.
You know, you again, it's something that you can do
at home. If you'd like to do, you but every
year making models different. I mean some of these cars though,
I mean I know Volvo and Maza for a couple
(09:31):
of years. Like you would have to remove the gas
pedal in order to do these things. And it was
like two hours and it was two hundred dollars to
replace these filters. It was extremely expensive. But most cars,
i'd say ninety five percent of all cars you can
do at home. And the filter's fairly inexpensive. And again
it's thirty you know, every thirty thousand miles, this thing
(09:53):
should be changed. So something to think about if especially
if just like the last caller, if you're having a
musty or whatnot, it could be debris or dirt or
mice infestation or whatnot. Now we typically don't see the
infestations in the summer. Where we see him in the
winter when it's warm and these mice you're trying to
find a warm spot, they'll make a nest in these filters.
(10:13):
So it's important that you get it checked and get
it changed regularly. So listen, I'm taking your phone calls,
So nomaner to call five one, three, seven, four nine
fifty five hundred that number again, five one, three, seven,
four nine fifty five hundred. Phone lines are wide open.
Love to hear from you. If you've got a car question,
give me a call. You're listening to the car show

Speaker 8 (11:08):
The one place for Sean Hannity weekdays at three oh
six fifty five KRC, the Talk station.
Speaker 1 (11:16):
Taking your car questions. The number to call five one, three,
seven four nine fifty five hundred. On this wonderful weather
we're having right it's uh, it's been great. I've we
went from like two months of no rain and now
we were like we're making up for the past three days.
It's really not helpful when you've got a party that
(11:37):
I was trying to plan. But that's so well, I
just got to deal with it. So all right, let's
go back to the phones. We've got Dale, Hey, Dale,
welcome to the car show. How can I help?
Speaker 4 (11:47):
Well, you can keep me from pulling my hair out.
I've got a twenty thirteen chewing and pale. Uh huh,
just tree, your information is at least two hundred and
thirty miles eye on the top. The problem I'm having
with the car is my my brain isn't working real
(12:10):
well today. I have Parkinson, so I'll get stuck on words.
So if I if I, if I stop, I'll come
back to life in a few seconds. Anyway, the I
can't think what you what you call it right now,
But there's a the flap in there that that controls
(12:34):
the airflow. It's going. It sounds it started clicking. It
sounds like windshield wipers on on a high gear. And uh,
I don't know if I got two or three of
those things underneath their friend of mine has the same
(12:56):
car and he had I was able to get on
you know behind the uh the dash, the glove box,
and he changed that one. But my mine's not telling
it's like right dead center of the dash or yeah,
(13:19):
of the of the dash. And how do how do
we get it that besides chairing the current pieces?
Speaker 9 (13:28):
Well?
Speaker 1 (13:29):
Yeah, I mean yeah, so what so it says here
you've got a thirteen Chevy and paula correct yep. Okay,
so you have what's called a blend door actuator. You
got a mode door actuator, and then you've got so
these actuators they're plastic, they're very cheap, and their job
(13:49):
is to, yes, that motor is designed to open up
that flat which the mode door allows it to go to,
you know, if it's you know, the vents or the
floor or the dash. And then you get temperature blend door,
right which blends your your your temperatures or whatnot. And
then if it's got dual climate, then then you've got
multiple other doors. So those motors are pretty inexpensive, but
(14:16):
some of them are accessible, some of them are not.
And the only thing that you can do is you
remove the dash. Now you said it sounds like that,
the clicking sounds like it's coming from like right behind
the like the radio and the cluster itself, like the radio. Yes, yes,
all right, So I am pretty I am pretty familiar
(14:41):
with that vehicle, and we've done quite a bit of them,
because the Impala and the Malibu and the Buick itself,
I mean, they're all pretty much the same. I really think,
I off the top of my head, I do not
think it's behind that. It may sound like that's where
it's at, but it's probably So when does it when
(15:02):
does it click? Is it does it click when you
change the temperature or does it click when you change
what position you want the vent? What when does it click?
Or does it just click? Start the car and it
just clicks all the time.
Speaker 4 (15:14):
It just well, it clicks until it is like like
it gets warmed up, but then it stops. Although my
son was driving the car the other or so back
and he went to turn the blow and the blow
blower on to get it a little more get from
(15:34):
zero from breeze whatever setting. When he hit that first
on setting on the blower, which would the left hand
knob and it quit and also and The other thing
is I could walk out there and they walked by
(15:56):
the car, and a lot of times it's it's like
it's a sensor and then it starts click doing that
clicking for a minute or two without even having the
car run, and it's key in the ignition or anything
like that.
Speaker 1 (16:10):
Oh wow, really, okay, all right, it's a weird tire.
Speaker 4 (16:16):
I worked for General Motors, and it's like, okay, Dale,
you're screwed.
Speaker 1 (16:24):
I mean a lot of these cars, I mean the
way they design them and they're the way they're engineered
and they are it can be a bit challenging, but
I do believe. So you said, what what knob did
he turn when the noise went away? Was it the
temperature or the mode? Was the temperature he changed and
the noise stopped? Or was it when he changed it
(16:45):
from the vents to the floor.
Speaker 4 (16:49):
It was it's actually like the fan motor. Oh so
once he turned there there's three street knobs, is like
what I call the blower motor.
Speaker 1 (17:03):
Yeah, so he turned the blower off and the noise
went away.
Speaker 4 (17:08):
He turned it out and the noise went away.
Speaker 1 (17:10):
Oh okay, okay, all right.
Speaker 4 (17:14):
And like I said, it sounds like a windshield.
Speaker 1 (17:19):
Yeah, yeah, you've got a bad blend door motor or
you know a mode door blend door or mode or actuator. Now,
I do believe on your particular vehicle it is accessible,
but it's on the driver side right above the gas
right above the gas pedal. Where is where this door
(17:40):
is at. So unfortunately it's not easy to get to.
But you don't have to take the dash out, but
it's extremely difficult to try to work upside down while
your back's kind of arched, you know, looking up at
this dash. But I'd probably recommend that you get it
to a professional just a it's gonna be it's gonna
be pretty difficult to get in there. I mean it's tight,
(18:02):
it's really tight to get in there. I just replace it. Yeah,
I just replaced one for a customer, a couple actually
a listener. Not only is a customer, but he's also
a listener, and he came in and we were able
to take care of it for him. But most likely
it may sound like it's coming from the center. But
and again h Year making models a little different, But
(18:24):
it most likely is located on the driver side above
the gas pel. So if you kind of crawl underneath
there and look up, look up above the gas pedal,
and it'll be on the you know, it will be
pretty close to the radio, but it'll be pretty high up.
And it's it's a you know, it's a thirty dollars motor.
I mean that's it's not expensive. It's a lot more
(18:47):
headache and time to get to it, but I mean
it can be done. It's just not easy. But it
should be located on the driver side above the gas pedal.
Speaker 4 (18:58):
Yeah, it's well, yeah, that would be.
Speaker 1 (19:01):
It's gonna have four wire it's gonna have more wires
going to it, and it's it's the base of it's
gonna be squared and the top of it's gonna be
kind of rounded off. It's almost gonna look like kind
of like a pyramid. Right, it's gonna be kind of triangular.
Not quite.
Speaker 4 (19:19):
Okay, Oh, we'll get to I'll get the voice after it.
Myself and blind. I'm myself am blind, and I still
do as much with my own work as I can.
Sure could get get and get down and their nose first,
and I have fun.
Speaker 1 (19:41):
All right, Dale, Well, I appreciate the phone call you
call me with the follow up. All right, when you
get when you get fixed. Okay, all right, take care,
have a great weekend. Sure he's uh, he's he was
all the way up in Michigan, so I'm sure he's
not having the weather we have down here. So all right,
let's go back taking your phone calls. And I'm gonna
call five one, three, seven fifty five hundred. Let's go
back to the phones. We've got Dan. Hey, Dan, welcome
(20:03):
to the car show. How can I help? Oh?
Speaker 9 (20:05):
Yes, I'm calling about a twenty eleven big Lacross's interested
in changing the wheel bearings. I wanted to know if
that's a job I can do myself.
Speaker 5 (20:15):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (20:15):
Absolutely. Is it a front wheel bearing or rear.
Speaker 9 (20:19):
It's I want to change all four of them. And
I don't know if I need to change spindles too.
Speaker 1 (20:25):
No, well, no, you don't need to change the spindles.
H Well, I mean it's it's it's a it's a
hub bearing. The spindle itself is fine, but it's a
hub bearing assembly like it'll come with a hub and
a bearing one and it's bolt on, is it? Let
me ask you? So, I don't I wouldn't recommend replacing
off I mean we do you just have one bad
(20:47):
wheel bearing, or.
Speaker 9 (20:49):
It sounds like there's one in the front and one
in the back of the front driver's side on the
back the rear passion. Okay, all right, but I'm not
sure unless you get set scope on there, you're not
gonna know, right, change them all?
Speaker 5 (21:05):
Well?
Speaker 1 (21:07):
Yeah, I mean yeah, I mean there's nothing wrong with that.
I mean, in our industry will typically just replace the
ones that are bad, simply because obviously because of the costs.
I mean, if you're gonna do it yourself, yeah, get
a good wheelbaring and you can do all four. But
I mean, I'll be honest with you, I would just
(21:27):
recommend replacing the ones that are bad. I mean, the
easiest way that we will test them is just get
it up in the air and you you put your
hand on the strut spring and you just spin that
tire and if you can feel that rumble there, that's
the one that's bad. I mean, you can do all four,
and you can do it yourself. You don't need any
type of The thing is, we do quite a bit
(21:51):
of those wheel bearings, but they're nice because they bolt on.
There's three large bolts on the back side of the
hub and you just unbolt those and yeah, you're gonna
have to beat them off. It's not gonna be you know,
easy per se, but it can be done. And if
you can't do it yourself, but I would, I mean,
even if it was my own vehicle, I wouldn't replace
all four. I just replaced the ones that are bad
(22:11):
because those other two bearings, I mean they might last
you another fifty thousand miles.
Speaker 9 (22:17):
Yeah, so so just to remove those they are probably
fifteen thirteen fifteen mili and those come out and then
you just hammer on it and that comes off.
Speaker 1 (22:28):
Yeah, so you need to yep. So you you take
the you know, obviously take the wheel off, you take
the axle nut off. You've got your large axle nut
right there at the center of the bearing, you'll take
that off. That's what holds the axle to the to
the bearing. And then there's obviously disconnect the wheel speed sensor.
And then there's if you kind of turn the wheel
(22:49):
to the left or to the right, you'll see three
you know, I don't know if they're fifteen milimeter that
they might be. They might be thirteen or fifteen millimeters.
There's three bolts that bolted to the huh u or
the spindle itself, and you take those out, and then
not always does it just it doesn't just fall off.
I mean a lot of times you've kind of got
to beat your brains out to get the thing out
(23:12):
because the spindle's aluminum, and sometimes you know, oxidation forms
in there. And I recommend if you get when you
do get it out, make sure you try to, you know,
with a wired brush or whatnot, do the best that
you can to try to clean all that oxidation off
that aluminum spindle. And then maybe you try to put
some type of grease on it to prevent it from
(23:32):
happening again. I mean eventually, yeah, eventually the grease will
you know, subside and it will oxidize again. But if
then forbid, you know, you know, two years from now
that bearing that you put in is bad again, You're
not having to beat your brains out again to get
it off.
Speaker 9 (23:49):
So all four of the front end the rears are
the same process. Three three bolts, and then you just
get the wheelbaring off. It's at the all wheel drive
and you're saying, I have to remove the speed sensor.
Speaker 1 (24:03):
I don't I don't know, you know, well, no, no,
you just have to know. So when you buy a
new wheel bearing, it'll come with a new speed sensor.
You just have to unplug it. You just have to.
There's there's a connector that you'll have to unplug for
the wheel speed sensor. Okay, but you don't have to
replace it. It'll the new bearing will come with a
new sensor. Oh nice. So and then on the backs,
(24:26):
I'm not quite sure. Obviously you're gonna have to take
and I should have reiterated to I mean, obviously you're
gonna have to take the brakes off when you do this,
You're gonna have to take the calipers off. You're gonna
have to take the rotors off. That exposes the hub
bearing assembly. That's where you see your axle nut. You'll
do that, and you'll have to do that for all
four wheels. Okay, but yeah, it can be done. It's
(24:49):
it's it's it's some work. But it's not gonna when
you take those three bolts out and you take that
axle nut off and the breaks off, I mean, it's
not just gonna fall off. I mean you're gonna have
to get a pretty you know, a dead blow hammer
or a sledgehammer, and you know, lather that thing up
with WD forty or some type of penetrating oil and
and do your best and hammer on that thing to
(25:10):
try to get it off, because it's not just gonna
fall off. It's gonna be some you'll be sweating.
Speaker 9 (25:16):
Yeah, Okay, dang Man, thanks so much for your.
Speaker 1 (25:19):
Service for the All right, Dan, you're welcome. Man, have
a great weekend. Yeah. I always encourage people. If you
guys want to take on the task of trying to
work on your own cars, I encourage it. I'm you know,
but it can be pretty challenging, especially like a wheelbaring
like dam was doing there. I mean, I even a
lot of people go, hey, man, I've got a flat
(25:41):
tire and I've got all the lugnuts off, and I
can't get this wheel off well, because the wheels are
illuminum and they oxidize to the hub and you have
to beat your living brains out just to get them off.
It happens quite a bit. We see a lot of it,
you know, So it's just one of those things. Again.
I always will encourage anybody that wants to take on
the task, and a lot of people you know, for me,
(26:03):
not car wise, but you know, you know, putting up
you know, I don't know something a task, you know,
replacing my hot water here or something like that. Could
I take the time and do it? Could I learn
how to do it? Sure? Do I have the time
to do it?
Speaker 5 (26:21):
No?
Speaker 1 (26:21):

What are what am I up against? You know? So
it was a great question. So, yeah, there are a
lot of people that can do it, you know, And
it's something that if you have the time and you
have the patience.
Speaker 5 (26:56):
Right.
Speaker 1 (26:57):

welcome to the car show. How can I help?
Speaker 5 (29:12):
Oh sir, how are you good.
Speaker 1 (29:14):
Thanks for waiting holding on for me. I do appreciate it.
You know, I sometimes talk too.
Speaker 5 (29:18):
Much, That's okay. You give a lot of good information.
That's the reason I listen. And also is it's the
reason I'm calling because I have a project. I think
I'm want to pass myself, but I can. I just
need a little more direction to see if I'm able
to do it, if I can explain it to you. Okay,
(29:40):
it's a two thousand and seven towyter Tacoma. It's it's
in good operational condition. Everything's done where I mainly do
the work myself. That's amazing. But it's the air conditioning.
Everything's working fine, no big de When it was hotter out,
(30:01):
I was using it, and it's a it's a drive
it on the weekends. It's an everyday driving truck. Sometimes
it's a normal operations. And I turned on the air
conditioner as normal and I heard a really hard, strange
black or plunk basically, and so I turned it off.
(30:24):
I turned off the knobs, and I turned off the
button that you push for the air conditioning, and I
noticed that before I turned off that AC button, flight
was splashing up. Until then it was blowing cold air,
but it was really hot out time. On my hand,
it's not blowing just enough. It's not normally it will
(30:48):
freeze you out. You gotta turn it down. And it's
all a factor as far as I know. Uh So
it was it was doing great. And then the next
morning or the next day it is to say, and
I got in and I turned it on as normal,
and it was still in the driveway where I left,
uh part flank punt or something, and uh, what my
(31:12):
concern is is that it's not working. Now, I hold
a few I pulled the fuse out just the case.
That was one of my questions. And so just the case,
I actually turned on the fast turned on the A
S and as that is that a good idea because
it sometimes I put server the defass and turn on
(31:35):
the heat. Not the heat with the as I'm driving,
I don't have the fan bro on. I just turned
it on the defoss, but the heat the windows you
know me clean that fogs up a bit. And I
was accidentally lefted on. Everyone scared me. So am I
going to damage anything driving this truck without this problem
(31:56):
of what do you think it is.
Speaker 1 (31:59):
That the the loud clank. The loud clanking noise that
you heard. Did it sound like he was coming from
inside the vehicle or outside the vehicle like under the hood,
under the hood, okay, so most likely.
Speaker 5 (32:11):
Ill I heard it once. I heard it once I
shut everything down. Uh, I didn't want I didn't continue
my drive. I got into a different big work but
next to the After I got.
Speaker 10 (32:24):
Off work, I kind of poked around theirneath there I didn't.
Speaker 5 (32:28):
I noticed there's a one belt that's running and I'm
able to mac neto. I guess part. I'm able to spin.
Speaker 1 (32:36):
It by hand on the the compressor.
Speaker 5 (32:42):
Yeah, yeah, the compressor. I'm able to spin that the
front part by hand. And I'm just wondering. I don't
want to mess that belt up to ruin the water
pump and to ruin everything else if something locks up.
Speaker 1 (32:56):
Well, so most likely if the noise come from our
of the hood and you heard that noise or whatnot,
it's probably the compressor itself. It's either the clutch, the
AC compressor clutch, or the compressor itself is coming apart.
Now the clutch, I'm sorry. The compressor itself actually has
you know, little pistons in it and that's what's pumping
(33:16):
that free on through the through the system. So it
could be something where the compressor's coming apart or that
clutch is coming apart. When you turn the air conditioning
off or you pull the fuse, it'll just it basically
eliminates the compressor and just allows that pulley to just
freely just move. So by removing the fuse, you should
be fine. You'll be fine. Now again in the winter
(33:40):
when you really do need the defaust it's it's not
gonna work as well as it should because it's not
blown that dry air. Okay, but most likely the compressor
or the clutch itself is coming apart. But if you can,
if you pull the fuse like you did, and you
don't have any more noise and it's working fine, I
you know, just I would you know, skate through the
(34:03):
through the winter and then maybe in the spring go
ahead and get it replaced.
Speaker 5 (34:09):
Yeah, yeah, that's that was that was my idea. I mean,
it's it's it's it's basically it's my second hand trust
you know, I love it. It's great. If I need
put gravel or wood in the back of it, then
I'll drive it on the weekend. I keep it maintained,
but it's not my designated vehicle back and forth to work.
Speaker 4 (34:30):
I love it.
Speaker 5 (34:30):
I love it had ten plus years and problem other
than this, and that was my concern because I don't
I don't want to like lock that belt up and
maybe is it a serpentine belt that's connected?
Speaker 1 (34:45):
Yeah, I mean yeah, well, I mean well I have
to look at the car itself. But Toyota, Uh, usually
you have a serpentine belt, and then some cars also
have an AC belt. So one belt that just runs
off the water pump and just runs air conditioning and
then uh, the serpentine belt runs you know, your alternator,
your power steering pomp and runs off the crank and whatnot.
(35:08):
So uh and potentially runs the fan as well. So
without looking at it, I don't know. On an O
seven Tacoma, Uh does it does it have two belts
or one belt?
Speaker 5 (35:21):
One belt?
Speaker 1 (35:22):
Just okay, it just has one belt, Okay, all right,
so then it's it's just a serpentine belt, and then
you're not gonna hurt anything. Now there's a potential there's
a possibility that eventually the AC pulley that's attached to
the clutch can go bad, and then it'll lock up,
(35:42):
and then it'll shred the belt, and then you know,
the battery light will come on, you'll lose power steering,
and then at that point you're gonna have to replace
the compressor. But if I would eliminate, if if you
can by pulling that fuse and not allowing that compressor
to kick on, just I would, I'd ride it as
long as you possibly can and and and not worry
(36:03):
about it. You should be fine. You're not going to
hurt anything.
Speaker 5 (36:07):
Yeah, that's my direction. It's it's not like a necessary
you know, I have to have it now air conditioning
and climate and it's the second second. You know, it's
my backup vehicle basically, but you know, I would like
to have it working. And if what do you think, uh,
(36:28):
let's say worst case in the area.
Speaker 11 (36:30):
Because because I looked at I did some studying, I
read some things and I'm like, yeah, mechanically I can
do this. But now as far as filling up, I've
seen that there's oil in the compressive and there's a
free on and there's like back towards where the cab is, there's.
Speaker 10 (36:46):
A stream system with over rings and you know, it's
kind of got a little more in depth, and that's
something that requires special tools to take take that.
Speaker 5 (36:57):
System apart and uh it under pressure. That's something I
can do in my driveway on a weekend. Or is
that something I need?
Speaker 1 (37:06):
It's something that's going to have to be done by
a mechanic. Yeah, unfortunately, because the thing is is you know,
the free the free on right, So you can't just
let the free on out. It can't just let it
out into the atmosphere one right, Two, you got a
machine that's to suck the free on out. We got
to replace the compressor and then we have to put
(37:27):
the right amount of free on it. And a lot
of people go, oh, I can get a can of
you know, AutoZone and just pump it full of free
on and listen, if you don't put a pressure correct,
if you don't put enough free on in it, it
won't work. If you put too much free on in it,
it won't work. You got to have the right amount.
So most likely it's gonna be something that's not going
to be able to be tackled. Now, if what you
(37:50):
could do is take it to a repair shop and say, hey,
can you evacuate my AC system, evacuate the free on.
I'm gonna put my uncle pressure on, and then I'll
bring it back and have you guys fill a backup. Now,
of course they'll charge you for that, but that would
be if you want to tackle, if you want to
tackle it yourself, that would be the correct professional way
(38:10):
to do it is take this somewhere, have them evacuate it.
You can do the compress yourself if you'd like, and
then bring it back to them and have it filled
back up. But I say, worst case scenario, if you
have a mechanic do it, you're probably twelve to fifteen
hundred dollars parts labor and tax.
Speaker 5 (38:28):
Oh my, I didn't expect that. I've never really pite
sourced it out, but I was thinking at least five
to six hundred. I didn't know it was in that nature.
Oh yeah, oh wow.
Speaker 1 (38:39):
Yeah, I mean that compresses probably five six hundred dollars,
and then you've got three or four hours plus the
AC charge. I'd say you're probably about twelve to fifteen
hundred dollars.
Speaker 5 (38:48):
Well, well, I mean it's it's a great truck, but
it's you.
Speaker 1 (38:51):
Know, not that great, huh.
Speaker 5 (38:53):
I don't need well, I don't need a seed is
not that great? You know, I'm fine with the windows down.
I just don't want to hurt nothing running. No, yeah,
because I accidentally left it on the befross. Now I
have the question and I turned on the default DePass
with let's just stay right and it won't turn on
(39:15):
that compression with that views out. Is that a good
way of doing that?
Speaker 4 (39:19):
Or no?
Speaker 1 (39:20):
You know the way you know, the way you did
it was fine. So you're not gonna hurt anything. You'll
be fine.
Speaker 5 (39:27):
I don't have to unplug. And there was a couple
of wires to the just itself.
Speaker 1 (39:34):
No, no, you'll be fine.
Speaker 5 (39:38):
Okay, all right, I appreciate it.
Speaker 1 (39:40):
Welcome, thanks for the call. Much all right, you take care,
Thank you, bye bye. Taking your phone calls and number

two nine ninety thirty.
Speaker 1 (40:31):
This is fifty five KRC, an iHeartRadio station. You're listening
to the car show on fifty five KRC. He talks station.
I am Dane Donovan from Donovan's Auto entire Center and
taking your car questions. And we are slowly quickly running
out of time, not slowly, but quickly. Uh, We've got Betty. Hey, Betty,
(40:54):
welcome to the car show. How can I help?
Speaker 5 (40:57):
Hi?
Speaker 6 (40:57):
I'm calling on behalf of my sons. He's tried to
call before, but always ran out of time. He has
a two thousand and four Nissan Almada that the air
conditioning runs great. When he's on the highway. When he
comes to a stop or idols, it blows the temperature
goes up and blows hot. He's replaced Let's see, he's
(41:19):
checked the refrigerant, he checked the coolant, he replaced the condenser,
and it still does it. So he's at a loss, right,
So could it.
Speaker 1 (41:26):
Be so it's it's ice cold on when he's on
the highway, yes, but it's warm when he's idoling or
you know, in stop and go driving right exactly, Okay.
And my first thought is the free on level is
probably low. But you said the free on level.
Speaker 6 (41:48):
He said, he added more refrigerant and the coolant level
is good.
Speaker 1 (41:53):
Okay, okay, And he replaced the condenser. You said, yeah,
that was one of.
Speaker 6 (41:59):
The first things he did. He's had this issue for
a couple of summers, now, okay.
Speaker 1 (42:04):
I mean, is he doing the work himself or is
he taking it to a mechanic or no.
Speaker 6 (42:09):
He looks it up and he has the book on it,
and he tries different than whatever it suggests that he
should check.
Speaker 1 (42:18):
So I mean, I would probably say the next thing, well,
he needs to know I mean what he needs to
hook it up to a gage. He needs to know
what his pressures are at as far as the high
side and the low side on the air conditioning. I mean,
without looking at it, I think what we could be
dealing with is and I mentioned it earlier, I mean
the compressor itself has pistons in it, right. It's a
(42:40):
small little engine, right, So you're thinking at higher revolutions,
when he's at higher speeds, that pump is the compressor
itself is weak, right, So at idle, it's just not
making enough revolutions to pump that free on through the system.
So of course there could be you know, an expansion
valve issue or what. But we you know, really without
(43:02):
seeing it, it's hard to say because we need I
would need to see what his pressures are at again
on the high side and the low side. But from
what you're telling me, if the free on level is
correct and he's replaced the condenser, my next step would
would lead me to be the compressor itself. The compressor
(43:22):
is just is weak and it's just not pumping the
free on through the system. Again, there could be some
type of restriction or expansion valve issue. I really think
it would be best to have him hook it up
to a machine and check and have the pressures checked
and take it to a mechanic can bring it to
me or wherever you're at. Have him look it up
(43:44):
to the machine and find out if there's any type
of restriction or maybe the compressor's weak, or there's there's
pressure issues. I really think you should now there will
be a charge. It's probably gonna be you know, like
I said to the last caller, I mean they might
be able to look him and say, hey, man, yeah,
your compressure's weak. You you most likely need a compressor.
Will have him evacuate the free on, have him put
(44:05):
the compressor on, and then take it back to where
he had it, and then have him fill it back up.
You know he can do that too, but most likely
they can. They you know, any repair shop would be
able to do that. But really you don't want to
do that unless you hook it up to a machine.
So but I think from what you're telling me, it
(44:26):
sounds like maybe the compressor's week or again a restriction
issue where you know, at higher speeds, you know, you.
Speaker 5 (44:36):
Know it's just through.
Speaker 6 (44:38):
Yeah, okay, and your location is I mean he's willing
to take it to somebody.
Speaker 1 (44:44):
Yeah what part of.
Speaker 6 (44:48):
Oran corn Township?
Speaker 1 (44:49):
Okay? So yeah, I am at So if you go
to donovantire dot com. It's It's Donovan's Auto Foreign is
the name. You'll see it because there's there's several locations,
but it's the Auto Foreign location. It's located at the
corner of Montgomery Road and Dan at thirty seven hundred
Montgomery Road. Have aim ask for Dane and just say hey, listen,
(45:12):
I spoke to you know you, Just say hey, I
spoke to you on the radio show. I'd like to
set up an appointment and let's just let's hook it
up to the machine. Let's find out what his pressures
are and if and I will get him guided through
that process and if he wants to take tackle that
If he wants to take on that task, that's perfectly fine,
and I'll guide him through the process and be more
happy to help him. All right, thank you. You have
(45:32):
a great weekend. All right, Sorry, I running out of time.
I do appreciate it. Everybody, have a great weekend. Try
to stay dry. It's good weather to be a duck.
But I'll be back next Saturday to answer all of
your car questions. Have a great weekend. You're listening to
the Car show on fifty five krc D talk stations
(46:02):
and sting
