Audi, Mini, BMW, Volkswagen, Actors and Mercedes. At Donovan's we
know foreign cars require unique care tokeep them running smoothly. That's why we're
proud to introduce the new Donovan's AutoForeign at the corner of Montgomery Road and
Dana Avenue near Xavier. At Donovan'sAuto Foreign, we have the tools and
expertise to keep your foreign vehicle movingand of course, Senator Donovan's Audio honesty.

(00:20):
After all, Donovan's has been thehonest choice for auto repairents Cincinnati since
nineteen fifty eight. Donovan's Auto Foreignon Montgomery Road. Make your appointment online
at donovantire dot com. Those windsyou Steven out of Temple keeping ving rhythm
with the song on the Ready Babya song, and maybe you want to

(00:49):
roll my windows down and cluse.Good afternoon, and welcome to the car
show on fifty five KARC Talk station. I'm Dane Donovan from Donovan's Auto entire
Center, and I'm here every Saturdayfrom one to two to take all of
your car questions. The number tocall five to one, three seven four

(01:10):
nine, fifty five hundred. Thatnumber again, five to one, three
seven four nine fifty five hundred againhere every Saturday to answer any car question
you might have. So I lovethat introt. That's my favorite intro.
So save that. So, uh, most of you might be out in
the yard or maybe tinkering with thecar, and man I all week.

(01:30):
Man, I just tell you whatI mean. It was like I swear,
it's like we lived in Seattle.I mean, it was just spitting
every five minutes, down pours, then sun come out, then it's pourn
down rain. We had those bigstorms and man, it was just what
a wild week. So but itis Saturday, do some yard work.

(01:51):
My wife were My wife and Iwere out in the yard a little bit
this morning. I was actually tryingto uh get my pedal bike out.
So we're gonna try to with mythree boys, me, my wife and
the three boys. We're going totry to get get ourselves together, get
get some bikes and maybe try todo the summer you know, go up
and down the bike trail. Right. So the boys are all old enough

(02:12):
that they can ride their bikes bythemselves. You know, there's no training
wheels or anything like that. AndI was like, you know what that's
it sounds like a lot of funfor me. I don't know, halfway
through it, I'll probably regret it, but you know, but I'm like
God, So I dropped my bikeoff and had its service because it's been
sitting in the shed for I don'tknow, I teen years and tire are
all flat and whatnot. But youknow, I dropped it off and kind

(02:34):
of find found myself in the positionthat I usually I'm usually at the other
end of it, right, Sousually people come into me they've got a
car problem, maybe one car,you know, want they're car tuned up
and don't necessarily know the process. So I kind of just walked in there
and and I said, hey,I don't want to know which process is,
but I said, I've got abike i'd kind of like to have,
like maybe looked over, tuned upor whatnot. And and I said,

(02:57):
you know, how far out areyou? Do you take walk ins?
And and uh so kind of remindedme of what I, you know,
just being on the other end ofit, because you know, you
just don't know. Every kind ofshops a little bit different, right.
And it's kind of a mom andpop bicycle shop. It's called Gym's Bicycle
Shop. Right there in Deer ParkDelanvale area, and you know that they've
always been great to me and I'vebeen there a couple of times. But

(03:19):
anyways, you know, again justfound myself. I mean, I can
you know, I can work onmy bike, but uh, you know,
I always try to give back tothe to the community as well.
You know, can I fix mybike, absolutely, Do I necessarily have
the time, not necessarily not,not really, So it's just kind of
one of those things where take itto a local, you know, local

(03:40):
repair shop. Again. I liketo always give back to the community,
just like people do with me,right, So, but uh, anyways,
it was it was a very crazy, busy, busy week. Some
of the service though, has beena little sawt And I know we're kind
of in that transition period, rightand we just got just got done with

(04:04):
spring break, right, and we'rekind of all waiting for that those warm
weather days and those pool days inthe summer and summer trips. So you
know, I would I would, you know. When I dropped my bike
off today, the lady was like, yeah, we're probably like eight to
ten days out before we can getto it. I said, okay,
that's fine. You know, nota big deal, don't mind, because

(04:25):
I got it in earlier enough, right, But far too often we get
to the point where, you know, we hit those you know now,
I'm telling you it's it's right aroundthe corner. We're gonna get those ninety
degree days and you're gonna be smelteringand you're not gonna have air conditioning.
And then you're gonna be calling meand I'm gonna say, hey, well,
you know, we're two weeks outand you're like, I can't drive
my car for the next two weekswith no air conditioning. Right now,

(04:47):
I will tell you with like asan example for the air conditioning, if
it's a really cold morning, there'snot much that we can do. But
once it starts getting into the sixtiesand seventies, you kind of feel like
it's gett a little steamy. That'swhen you need to bring it in.
That's when you need to schedule it. Call us up, uh and schedule
it so we can start taking alook at that stuff before your summer break.

(05:11):
Far too often, and you know, I'm sometimes guilty of it myself,
we wait till the last minute, right you're leaving for a trip on
Monday and you call, you're callingme on Friday. I need to get
my car in because I'm leaving themon Monday and we can't do it right.
And I want to get I wantto get to everybody's car. I
want to service everybody's car. Soagain I'm telling you it's right around the
corner. Uh, we're gonna startgetting those hot temperatures and you've got to

(05:33):
start thinking about what you need todo to get your car serviced for the
summer. If you've taken this bigsummer trip, you want to get in
there now because again, a lotof times, you know, there's sometimes
you've got parts that I can't get. You know, they're on back order.
I've got a vehicle at my newshop right now that the convertible top's
not working. Now, they gotit in early enough, but the parts

(05:55):
on backcorner, it's like four tofive weeks, right, So that should
put them out about the time wherethe convertible top can go down, right,
because they got it in on time. So we got to have the
conversation that this is when we needto start thinking about the summer summer trips
and getting the car ready for summer. Tires, brakes, oil changes and
air conditioning, you know, gettingyour battery checked. Got a phone call

(06:16):
from a colleague and a friend ofmine. Yesterday his mother in law or
his mother was picking his daughter upfrom school and she just pulled up to
pick her up and shut the caroff and boom, battery is dead.
I mean the car didn't even sitfor a long period of time. She
literally was in line to pick hisdaughter up and she went to start the
car and it was dead. Deadis a door now? He called me.

(06:39):
Luckily I was close by and Iran over there and when I got
there, the battery only had sixvolts. That was it. And she
said, what didn't really give meany warnings? No, they most time
they don't. Some will do somewill crank slow, or you can get
the battery tested and I can testand say, yeah, it did test
bad and you need to replace it. Now. She thought that she hadn't

(07:00):
replace the battery at all, AndI'm like, well, you know,
batteries again, they only last youknow, three to four years. That's
the average life of a battery inthis region right. So far, too
often I have the conversation where peoplego, well, I just replaced that
you know, five years ago.Well, that's that's about all you get
at them. It depends on howlong it sits, how long you drive
it, and the brand in thein the price, right. So these

(07:24):
are all things that you need tothink about going into these these summer months.
A lot of times when we getextremely cold temperatures that will shock a
battery, When we get extremely hightemperatures that will shock a battery. You
know, we get into we getinto ninety five plus hundred degree days.
You know, that puts a lotof stress on starters, It puts a
lot of stress on alt ares, puts a lot of stress on batteries,

(07:44):
you know. So these are thingsthat we need to start thinking about again
if you're going to take a roadtrip for the summer. So because again
we're in spring and it's it's notgoing to be it's not going to be
too far away before we get thosehot temperature So all right again, I'm
taking your phone calls on a recallfive one, three, seven, four,
nine, fifty five hundred. Let'sgo to the phones we have Dave,

(08:05):
Dave, welcome to the car show. How can I helpay Dan?
How's it going I'm good. Howare you pretty good? I called you
a couple of weeks ago in thistwenty eight seven cheap Liberty one hundred and
seventy miles about the transmission in thefilter. Yeah, I went ahead and
changed yet and it worked out realgood. It's jumping off the line now,
really good. Good? So youjust did you do the correct me

(08:28):
if I'm wrong, because you know, I talked to so many people,
but we were discussing as far asdoing a service or doing a draining fill.
Did you end up just replacing thefilter and what was in the pan?
Right? Okay? Yeah? Andyou notice a big difference. Oh
yeah, it doesn't hesitate when youstart up from the dead stout if it's
cold. Okay, good, anotherquestion, Thanks for the update. I

(08:54):
appreciate that. Yeah, okay.On a twenty four Chevy Trailblazer six cylinder,
it's got like one hundred and seventyfive thousand miles on it, there's
a rod knock, and is itbest? Is it cheaper to rebuild those
engines or just get a new engine? Just get a new engine? Okay?
Yeah, because a lot of times, you know, it's it's just

(09:15):
so expensive. It's so pricey becausenot only are you paying to have the
engine removed, but then you're payingto have it tore down and everything replaced.
And I mean we just did onea new at my New Shot.
We just did one on a Audithat needed some valves and we ended up
just it was burning oil. Weended up rebuilding it. But the reason
we did that was a new onewasn't an option, and a used one

(09:39):
I didn't recommend because again, thevolkswagens burn oil quite a bit, so
really the best option was just torebuild it. That might make sense on
a particular car, like you know, like an OUDI or whatnot, But
on the Trailblazer, I would probablyjust put a a remnufactured or a used
one in it, preferably remanufactured.I would look at Jazz Jasper engines and

(10:01):
transmissions. That's who i'd recommend.Okay, what would be like a ballpark
figure on something like that? Allright, man? Because they used ones
are like four to five hundred,But to put them in thirty hundred,
yeah, I would say you're probablyat five to six grand probably to put
a remanufacturer it might even be seven. It's a lot. It's it's it's

(10:24):
a lot, okay, all right, I really appreciate it. Day.
Hey, thanks for the call. You have a great day. All right.
Again, we're taking your phone callsand never to call five one three
seven fifty five hundred. That numberagain, five one three seven nine fifty

I'm Dane Donovan from Donovan's Auto EntireCenter. Past couple of weeks I

(11:33):
kind of mentioned to you, uh, we had a new addition to the
Donovan Entire family. Well, notthe family, the family business. I
should say, Uh, no morekids for me. But yeah, so
we've now you know, you cango to donovantire dot com and find your
nearest location. But I recently andwe kind of made the announcement earlier this

(11:54):
week. We sent out a bignewsletter. But there was a repair shop
that had been bit that had beenin business for thirty four years. It
was called Auto Foreign. It wasat the corner of Montgomery Road in Dana.
Okay, great business, great customerbase, absolutely man, what great
group of customers. Uh the owner, he did a phenomenal job running the

(12:16):
business. And you know, again, I'm very happy to announce that Donovan's
has purchased Auto Foreign in It's justoutside of Norwood. Again I call it
Norwood, but there's literally a setof train tracks that divides us from Norwood.
But yeah, corner Montgomery Road andDana, right across from XAVIW Xavier

(12:39):
University. And again they did youknow, they work on they worked on
all foreign vehicles. Now, ofcourse with it being Donovan's, we we
will continue, say grave to providethe same great service that Auto Foreign did
provided and just just a new name. That's it. And man, I've
got a great group of guys. And uh, we're kind of in a

(13:01):
little bit of that transition period fromgoing to Auto Form to Donovan's Auto Form.
But again, uh, we didpurchase it the they were looking to
you know, uh, the ownerwas looking to retire. And I want
the Donovan brand to continue to growand I want to continue to you know,
fix cars. This is a passionof mine and my only passion,

(13:26):
one of my only passions was torun the family business and uh, you
know, work for Donovan's Tire.I mean, it's it's what I do,
It's what I love, and it'syou know, what I will continue
to do. And again I II truly do love and enjoy what I
do it. You know, therethere are there ups, and there are

(13:46):
there good days and the bad days, right, you know, but I
mean that's life. Right. ButI could say at the end of the
day and I Most people can't saythis, but you know I never dread
going to work. You know,I really do enjoy what I do.
And that's why I'm here every Saturdayto answer your car questions because I want
to continue that and I want tocontinue to be able to help your car

(14:07):
and fix your car and help youout in the process. I generally call
me. Last week, unfortunately,he was calling about a starting issue and
I was actually hoping if he's listening, hoping to have him call in because
I'd like to get an update. So I was trying to meet up with
him on Wednesday because he was gonnahe had it at the dealer. And
again I'm not picking on dealers, but the information he was given me wasn't

(14:31):
adding up, and he was meetingwith the dealer to figure out what what
the what he was, what thenext step was. And unfortunately I couldn't
make it. I just just toobusy. But you know that's what I'm
here to do is try to helpyou and guide you through whatever car problem
you may have and uh and justgive you the best information that I possibly
can't do. I know everything. Now, Can I fix every single car?

(14:54):
No? But if I can helpyou and guide you in any way,
shape or form. That's what I'mhere for. So again, then
number to call five one three, five hundred. Let's go to the phones.
We've got Paul. Hey, Paul, welcome to the car show.
How can I help Hi? Dane? You sir? All right? I
have a twenty fourteen Volkswegen torig TDIhis head. It's had the upgrade to

(15:20):
the diesel engine. I love thecar. I got about one hundred and
thirty thousand miles on it. Lastmonth I noticed a little drop of oil
on the garage floor, and that'suncharacteristic for it. And I started taking
a look and I discovered a lotof oil in the h it's a V
six engine. Down into V areathere was a little pool of oil and

(15:45):
I had noticed that I had startedlosing a little bit of oil and a
little bit of cool. In didsome research, found out it's characteristics for
these engines to have the engine oilcool or fail, and sure enough,
that's what was going on with mine. So I jumped in and I replaced
the oil core, cleaned everything up, got it all back together. It's

(16:10):
running really dry. You know, everything looks great except I'm starting to get
or I have been getting MIL indicatorlightes and the code I'm getting is a
P zero four zero five. TheEGR sensor a circuit low and I can

(16:32):
clear that and if I'm driving,it'll stay off, but it eventually comes
back. And I went through andI checked, I took a look at
all the connectors. I can't confirmthat they're all good, but I took
a quick run through. But I'ma little bit stumped right now, and
I'm looking for some ideas on tofind out. I can't find a schematic

(16:53):
or a troubleshooting chart for those Mymeter or my UH reader only reads.
It doesn't do any diagnostics. SoI'm looking for some ideas. Okay,
So as far as the work, when did you replace that cooler about a
month ago? And then how longago was it when the light started coming

(17:15):
on right away? Right away?Okay? All right? Yeah, And
I might say, I don't knowfor for the audience that cooler is buried
like I said, down in thein the value of the value of the
engine. Yet yeah, behind thee g R cooler underneath the end of
intake manifold. So you got topull all that stuff out, so you're

(17:36):
disturbing all the all the lines andeverything down in there. Okay, so
you obviously you had to unplug thee g R or whatnot in order to
do the job. And then immediatelyafter that you get the code. Yeah,
okay. And then as far asI mean, did you look like
you said, did you look atthe connector make sure none of the pins

(17:56):
were you know, bent or anythinglike debt? You actually probably undue probably
about a half a dozen different electricalconnectors. I did take a look at
a number of them. I dida reasonable review, but not an in
depth. And those connectors on thoseVolkswagen and Audi and Portia connectors through those

(18:18):
little fin wires, and it's hardto see down into, you know,
to them. Sometime. I didn'tsee any vent pins on one side where
you have the pins. The pinsall look fine, but I couldn't see
down to the receptacle of the pin. Okay, And you said you did
clear the code, But how longdoes it take for it to come back
a couple of Now, let's saythat I have no codes, I start

(18:45):
the engine and I go out todrive. I'll probably get a code I
can I can vary it by howI shift the engine, but I'll get
a code probably within ten or fifteenminutes. Okay, all right, cool,
all right, What I'm going toprobably suggest if you have time during
the week, I have a AudiVolkswagen technician that is very very good,

(19:08):
very very thorough, and would yoube able to give me a call at
my shop and I will, We'llconverse with him and just try to see
if he can try to pinpoint andget this taken care of for you a
little bit better. Well, I'dlove that. Yeah, he's very very
knowledgeable, knows this stuff, andI think he would be able to help

(19:30):
you out pretty quickly. And that'sthe kind of expertise I'm looking for.
And there's just unfortunately not a lotout in the internet on this. No
I know, I know, Andlike I said, he he's been working
on Volkswagen Oudi's for eighteen no total. I mean he worked at the dealer
for seventeen years, but he's workingon him for nineteen years. And I'll

(19:52):
tell you what, I am extremelyimpressed by his ability in what he can
figure out what he does, andI really think that he's the expert that
can really help you out. LikeI said, he's at my new shop
that I that I just acquired, and I could give you the number,
and it says, so you're callingfrom Cleveland. Yeah, okay, great.
I love the school danger though,so I know that area. Well,

(20:17):
we're a stone's throw away. Imean I can look out our front
window and staring at Xavier. Soyeah, let me give you the number,
and you give me a call anyday through the week. And if
sometimes I'll step out for you know, I'm test driving a car or this
or that. And if you askfor Dane, of course Dane Donovan.
But if for some reason I'm notthere or whatnot, just say I spoke
with him on the radio on Saturday. He asked me to leave a message.

(20:41):
So just leave a message and I'llcall you back. If you have
a pen and paper, I cangive you that number. Go I'm ready.
Area code five one three seven threeone eight nine eight nine five one
three seven three one eight nine eightnine. So what's unique is the guy,
the general that I bought the businessfrom. The eight nine eight nine

(21:02):
is Volkswagen. Volkswagen, so thatthat was his passion. The guy that
started the business, his passion wasVolkswagen and then obviously it you know,
it formed into just an all foreignshop. But yeah, so you give
me a call, and if youcan't get a hold of me, just
say, hey, can I pleaseleave a message? If I don't answer,

(21:22):
a gentleman by the name of Mikewill answer and he'll take my message
for me. Okay, okay, all right, great, all right,
Well, thank you for the phonecall. You enjoy your weekend. I
will you do the same, allright, take care, bye bye,
all right, so again taking yourphone call. So number to call five
one, three, seven nine fiftyfive hundred. Let's go back to the
phones. We've got les. Welcometo the car show. How can I

(21:45):
help? Hey, Yeah, it'sLas like Laslow Las Okay, Las Low,
Okay, sorry, gotcha? Yeah, okay. So I've got a
two thousand and six Toyota Avalon Limited, and what it's been doing is it's
the push button start Well, ifI push the button, it may ninety

(22:07):
nine percent of the times it'll startup. But every once in a while
it'll take like three or four tries. And I've even noticed like if I
hang on to the button, likekeep it depressed, it'll run as soon
as I let off the button,it'll stop. The only work I've had
done to the car myself, becauseobviously it's used. They did put a

(22:32):
number two coil pack in there.Okay, That's all I've had done,
all right. So when when itwon't start, when you push the button
and it won't start, does thecar crank at all or just it just
does nothing? Yep, good strongcrank, and it'll say it's intermittent.

(22:52):
So it'll say two cranks and stop, and then the next then I wait
like ten or twenty seconds, tryagain, and it might run, but
soon as I let off the buttonit'll die. And then say like the
fourth time, the fourth dry,it'll run great, and then it'll run

(23:14):
great for the next three weeks. And then if we're oddly and I tried
to keep my eye on, wellwas it cold weather? You know it's
not. I don't see any trend, okay. And then any lights on
in the dash or any And whenit won't start, is there any lights
that are coming on or check enginelight on or anything like that. Well,

(23:37):
when you very first started, ofcourse, all the lights come on,
but nothing sustained like check engine. There's even another one that says uh
and something else. There's another checkengine light, but it has to do
specifically with the oil, and Ijust change the oil. So just like
a maintenance required light or something that'srequired it. Yeah, okay, all

(24:00):
right, Well, oh boy, that's I haven't heard of that problem.
I haven't seen that problem. Imean, I think initially, obviously,
if it's cranking, I mean, you know, initially it could be the

(24:21):
fact that you're holding if you're holdingthe button down and it'll start, but
then as soon as you shut assoon as you let go of the button,
it shuts off. I'm inclined tothink that it has something to do
with the button. Okay, yeah, because you know obviously it's intermittent,
right, and you know you're you'rehaving there's no rhyme or reason when it

(24:47):
does it. Right, Number two, if you hold the button down,
it'll run, but then the minuteyou let off, it shuts off.
And if it's cranking, it soundslike it's getting fuel and the starter's work
and everything else. And if youlet go the button, it shuts off
or it quits dies. I'm I'mleaning towards the button now. Now,
I'll be honest with you. Idon't think I've ever seen a button go

(25:08):
I've never seen one go bad,per se. But just because I haven't
seen it go bad doesn't mean itcan't happen. I mean, I but
I'm I'm I'm leaning towards that button'sprobably gotta be bad. Does it?
Does it have a little green lighton the button? Yeah, when you
touch the brake pedal, then it'llgo from I think it's orange, from

(25:30):
orange to green and then you canstart Okay, have you paid attention?
I'm just curious, have you paidattention to her pushing that button and just
seeing, you know, putting yourfinger a little maybe below that light,
just to see, you know,if the color changes or the light changes
or anything like that. So Ithink sometimes too they can turn red.

(25:52):
I would maybe try to look atthat. But I'm I'm leaning towards that
buttons probably bad. But you knowthe problem is is that's one of those
things where there's no check engine light. There's no real indication that there's a
problem other than you know, assoon as you let off the button,
it shuts off. So again,I'm inclined to think that that button's probably

(26:12):
bad. Okay, try to yeah, try to try to do like a
a hard reset on the vehicle.Do you know how to do that?
I do not. Okay, soa lot of times too. It's just
worth a shot if you take boththe negative and positive battery cable ends off,

(26:33):
taking both off obviously, negative offfirst, positive off second, and
you hold both of those cable endstogether, hold them together for about a
minute. And basically what that doesis kind of like a hard reset.
Right, So if your computer's actingup, what do you do you restart
it? If your phone's acting up, what do you do you restart it?
So by shutting the vehicle off, you're not really restarting anything. So

(26:56):
by taking both battery cable ends off, holding them together basically restarts every kind
of module switch, every kind ofelectrical component, because sometimes you know,
that switch may sometimes be it mightbe like losing its path or whatnot.
Again, I don't I'm not sayingthat this is going to fix it,
but it's worth the shot. Doesn'tcost you anything, it's not going to

(27:17):
hurt anything. You've got nothing tolose other than you know your the the
one minute that you've got to holdthe battery cable ends together. I would
just try that. See if anythingchanges, all right, all right,
and you and then you yep,and then you report back to me.
You let me know if anything changesor if you've got it narrowed down.
All right, all right, we'lldo Thank you, have a great weekend.

(27:40):
All right, bye bye, allright. Taking your phone calls,
uh, the phone lines wide open. The number to call five one three
seven fifty five hundred, that numbergain five to one three seven four nine
fifty five hundred. You're listening tothe car show on fifty five KRC,
the talk station. If there isone word that would describe the Donovans,
it's trust. I trust them absolutely. I trust the Donovan name at all

(28:03):
times because they stand behind their name. Hi. Dale Donovan from Donovan's Auto
entire Center, the honest choice forcar repair in Cincinnati since nineteen fifty eight.
Our goal has always been to putsafety, value, and integrity over
profits. So every time you bringyour vehicle to Donovan's, you know you're
getting everything your car needs and nothingit doesn't find the one nearest to you
at Donovantyre dot com. The oneplace for Sean Hannity weekdays at three oh

(28:30):
six fifty five KRC, the Talkstation taking your car questions. The number
to call five one three seventh ninea fifty five hundred. That number gain
five to one three seven four ninefifty five hundred. The phones are a
little, you know, not ringingtoo much today, Like I would imagine
that people probably out and getting yardwork done and everything else because you know,

(28:55):
uh, you haven't been able togo outside for the past week because
all it's been doing is rainy.Man. I just tell you what the
thing is though, too is likeyou know, they always say, if
you don't like the weather in Cincinnati, just wait fifteen minutes. But I'll
tell you what. It wasn't likethat this week, was it? I
mean, it was just rain andrain and rain and rain. So all
right again, I'm taking your phonecalls and number to call five one three
seven nine fifty five hundred. We'vegot Joel. Hey, Joel, welcome

(29:18):
to the car show. How canI help? I've called a couple of
times before, but I got atheory on your oil consumption on newer cars.
Yeah, and the tire wear ontoyotas. Okay, well I'm interested
in hearing this, Okay, Ithought, so, okay, when you're
decelerating going down the hills, etcetera. Maybe even down shifting. I

(29:41):
got paddle shifters on my twenty thirteenCamray, and I like to put the
roads like on Stroop and Dorothy hereand Kettering are too steep to just keep
pitting your brake. I don't liketo do that, so I downshift,
and okay, when you're when you'restealing, when you're piston goes down,

(30:03):
it creates a vacuum when your thottleplates closed, right, Well, the
more vacuum you pull, the moreit sucks oil past your rings from the
crank case and on the cylinder wallsup into the air chamber and it burns
oil slowly. Do you agree?Yeah, I could see that. Yeah.

(30:25):
Well, all the newer cars,at least mine automatically down shift if
you've got an in cruise control andit automatically downshifts in the fourth gear from
assists, and that creates more suctionand a constructive oil right past the rings
more. You know, I've neverhad I've never I mean, it makes

(30:48):
sense. I've never had anybody explainto me like that, that's what That's
what I think. Yeah, Ithink I'm I'm an you know, I
used to be a garage McCann.I mean just in my own garage,
but I can't do that stuff anymore. But anyway, I think about these
physics and what happens, and Ithink that that the oil gets sucked past.

(31:12):
I'm adding a cord of oil everyeight hundred miles on my Toyota Camry
with one hundred and forty seven thousandmiles, and I last oil change I
had was one hundred and thirty five. So I've been changing my own oil
by adding the court. I knowthat's not I know you think that's terrible,

(31:33):
but I can't afford the oil changeright now. No, I know
it happens a lot, you knowI I you know, man, all
the amount of the amount of carsnowadays that are burning all this oil.
It's just crazy. Yeah. Iknow you've been challing. You've been saying

(31:55):
for months to check your oil.So I check it regularly. And thanks
for that. Yeah, at leatit's the most important thing that you can
do. What do you think aboutmy vacuum theory? Again, I've never
heard anybody explain it that way.I think you might be onto something there.
Well, I don't have a lotof new cars. I just got

(32:15):
a thirteen camera. But to thenewer cars down shift by themselves. They
got electronic transmissions with brains. Yeah, no, I agree. I mean
that's the thing is like these carsare just they're they're just you know,
computers on wheels, right, andthey're you know, you don't realize it.

(32:35):
And I mean the card, Imean it does everything for you everything.
I mean, heck, eat, some of them even drive for you.
Right. You don't even have to, you don't even have to.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, there'souldgo to drive to Florida with a vehicle
that had adaptive cruise control and youyou want to talk about, Man,
what what a difference if you're ona long road. Adaptive cruise control is

(33:01):
the nicest feature on a vehicle, one of the nicest nicest features on a
vehicle. Man, is it amazing? It's so I was hoping you'd say
that I was driving. I wasdriving it. I would drive at night
because what I when I had I'vegot three boys, right, so when
they were younger, what I woulddo is I'd leave at night and I

(33:22):
would drive through the night. AndI tell you what I mean, I'd
go with I'd go hours without touchinga brake, pedal or gas pedal,
you know what I mean. ObviouslyI'm holding the steering wheel or whatnot.
But the fact that I don't haveto keep turning on, turn it off,
on off, it's man, it'sit's a nice feature. Oh you
don't have to just disengage it oranything. You know. That adaptive cruise

(33:45):
control. If if a car getsover in front of you, it'll slow
the car down by itself. Ifthe car gets if it gets back right,
and then if some if a caris you know, you're creeping up
on a car, it keeps youin pace with that car. So if
that cars moving sixty five miles anhour and you are right and you're going
seventy five, it'll bring you backdown to sixty five and keep you in

(34:07):
pace and keep you in a safedistance. So it's an amazing Does it
apply to brakes and doing so?Oh yeah, absolutely. Oh and it's
still engages. Okay, well that'sthe way to go, yeap. So
I use it. I use thedaily, even in kettering and dating and

(34:28):
stuff just on the street because itkeeps me from getting people right. But
they are always under They're always underphones. Oh I know, Oh,
I know, I gotta get togo. Yeah, I gotta get going.
But h I appreciate the phone calland a great theory. So I
you know, I don't know whythese cars are burn all so so day
on bat. I mean it's it'smassive problem. So all right, taking

(34:50):

Here's to you. All right, let's go to the phones because a wheel
run out of time. We've gotDwayne A Dayne. Welcome to the car

(36:12):
show. How can I help?Good afternoon, Dane. Good after you
got a two thousand and six HondaRidgeline. I've always had a soft pedal,
and I've owned this truck from brandnew. But the pedal's getting softer.
I can't. How do I goabout, Dane determining if it's a
break booster issue or even the mastercylinder that's sailing. Hu you're getting weaker?
Yeah, typically if a booster isbad, right, you're gonna get

(36:37):
a hard pedal, like the pedal'sreally really hard and the car is not
stopping. Well, if you're gettinga soft pedal, that's usually an indication
that it's a master cylinder issue. Now, now there's there. Now we
don't there can be other issues.Right? Have you had how many miles

(36:58):
around the vehicle? Three hundred thousandruns like a top runs like it.
I drive it to Florida tomorrow.Good, all right, good good?
I love Hondas. Let me askyou something. When was the last time
you had the break fluid flushed?Uh, thirty thousand, thirty five thousand
miles ago? And was it softafter the break fluid was flushed? Did

(37:20):
it still feels soft to you?Yeah, it's I've owned this truck from
day one in May of five, and it's always been soft, right,
but now I'm noticing it's soft orand it concerns me. Okay, so
you know there you know again threehundred thousand miles and yeah, maybe the
mass center could be could be youryour issue. The other thing, if

(37:45):
you did have it flushed thirty thousandmiles ago a lot of times, when
was the last time the brakes werereplaced. I replaced all the rotors and
all the pads at the same time. Thirty thousand miles ago and miles ago.
Yeah, product yet, okay,And obviously when you had the job,

(38:06):
when you had the job done, they didn't tell you anything about I'm
sure they serviced the calipers to makesure that the pens were good and they
were greased, that they slide reallynice. Sure, Oh, I'm all
about that. Good good. Sowhat what happens on some vehicles too,
if you get a lower soft pedal, what will happen is the brakes will
kind of wear out right, andthe caliber pins will will rustle, We'll

(38:29):
be frozen. So what happens isthe basically the caliber piston has to do
all the work and it has toyou know, it no longer slide,
and that piston's coming all the wayout, which will cause it lower kind
of soft pedal as well. Ifthe caliber slides were taken care of properly,
and you just had the brakes replacedthirty thousand miles ago and you've had

(38:50):
the the brake fluid flushed, I'mwilling to say that. I mean,
we've kind of narrowed it down touh, probably probably is the mass of
cylinder. And again, a booster, if it's bad, will cause the
pedal to be stiff. So I'mleaning towards I think your next step would

(39:10):
be to put a master cylinder onit. It's I'm assuming it's original correct.
Oh yeah, it's all original.Oh yeah, oh yeah, Okay,
okay, I mean that's where Iwould start. If you it sounds
like you've done your homework. You'vedone all the break excuse me, you've
done all the breaks. You've donethe break fluid flush, all the pins,
all the calibers are good, andyou're not having a stiff pedal.

(39:31):
You're just having a soft pedal. So I would inclined to tell you probably
that the master cylinder would be thenext step. Now, I will tell
you that sometimes air can get trapped. Does it have abs analog brakes?

(39:52):
Oh? Sure, from the factory. So are you are you having a
service at the dealer or service atan independent shop? Oh, independent chef,
for sure at this point in time. Okay. So I will tell
you if if you go the routeof doing the master cylinder and you still
feel as if there is a issuewith a soft pedal, sometimes air can

(40:15):
get trapped in that ABS pump orSLASH module. Okay, air can get
trapped in there, and you haveto be able to with a scan tool.
You're not gonna be able to doit. Hopefully the independent shop you're
taking it to with a scan toolgo in there and they have to basically
activate the ABS pump or the moduleitself to try to get that air out.
So we might be dealing with maybedealing with something like that. So

(40:37):
because the problem is, Yeah, sometimes when you do a brake fluid flush,
you know those valves in that ABSmodule, right, you know the
ABS module the pump really is isdesigned to write if you get into it
a situation where you have to slamthe brakes. ABS is designed to pump
that pedal and that's what that moduleSLASH pump does, and sometimes air gets

(40:58):
trapped in there because that pump isnot being activated properly. Now I have
seen Now this is your discretion, and I would do this. I would
do this in a safe environment. But I have seen where people are having
a soft pedal or dealing with yourparticular situation, and I've seen it work

(41:19):
first handed. But a lot oftimes if you go to like a gravel
lot right right obviously where there's nobodyaround or what. Do this in a
safe manner, but actually activate theABS. Get into a gravel lot and
slam on those brakes and try toget that that module to activate, which
a lot of times will then pushthat air through and get that air out

(41:39):
of the system. So that's kindof like, that's kind of like to
do it yourself or you know, way of doing it without a scan tool
is try to activate the ABS ina safe manner and get that air out
of the system. I've seen itwork first handed. I had a gentleman
call me and was having that problemand did a little bit of research online

(42:00):
and I'm like, I had neverheard of it, and he did it
and he goes, damn it fixedmy pedal immediately and I didn't have any
more poles. So I've seen ithappen. So you can try that.
Try you know, try that first. If it doesn't work, master cylinder,
and if the master cylinder still doesn'ttake care of it, I would
maybe take it to someone who canuse a proper scan tool that's going to

(42:22):
be able to properly bleed the brakesystem the correct way. Yeah, bleed
the a BS post. All right, your dad's toucht you well, all
right, well I appreciate it.Thank you for the compliment. So well,
he has a he has he hastaught me. Well, he's a
uh he's been a very great uhrole model, slash mentor slash father.

(42:46):
You know he's been he's been allof that. So yeah, very very
bless You're right. Well, cheeron those spoiler makers tonight. We're all
cheering over here. Yeah, yeah, I heard that game's going on tonight.
What time? Six o nine?Brother, six o nine? All
right, well, good luck toyou. All right, thank you here,

(43:07):
all right, bye bye? Allright, real quick, I got
I don't even do you think we'vegot enough time? Okay, all right,
let's go to John. Hey John, I'm uh not I want to
get to you. I just I'mgot about a minute and a half.
How can I help you? Okay, I'll make it quick. I'll mix
up your day here. I've gota nineteen forty seven Oliver tractor. It's

(43:28):
a small tractor. I bought itan auction, okay, it was.
It was restored about ten years ago, and I guess it sat in the
barn and I bought it, andyou know, I'm kind of taking apart,
painting up to what was you know, kind of rusted and this and
that, and taking the sheet metaloff and part of the process. I
took the radiator off and looked atit, and I thought, well,

(43:51):
when I have it off, I'lltake it to a radiator shop and have
them, I guess, flush it, clean it whatever, make sure it's
good. So but then I'm thinking, why have all that apart? Should
I flush out the motor somehow?Like I can get to it real good
or is there or is there away to do that or wise? Or

(44:13):
just stick a hose down under?Yeah, So what what I would recommend
you do is take the uh I'msorry, I don't know a ton about
tractors, but it's I would assumeit's got Does it have a thermostat?
Yes? Okay, So what Iwould do is I would get a thermostat
for I would take the thermostat outand then I would force I would maybe

(44:36):
uh, you know c l RH. You've heard of c l R
right, Maybe I would fill theblock with c l R and then I
would do a flush. Like Isaid, take that thermostat out so that
that that that that that c lR and that water are going through the
whole block to try to it wouldn'thurt, but I would use c l
R. Take the thermostat out,so you know, obviously with the thermostat

(44:58):
in there, and so I'm gonnado that unless you gets up to operate
a temperature, but take it outso that you can get that constant flow
through that block. And the onlychemical I would recommend is CLR. All
right, does the does the motorhave to be running to do that?
No, sir, nope, no, sir dope. All right, all
right, we were out of time. Thank you everybody, have a great

(45:19):
weekend, but I will be backnext Saturday to answer all of your car
questions. You're listening to the CarShow on fifty five krc D talkstation.
