Speaker 1 (00:00):
And now from the New York Giants broadcast team, it's
John Smelk.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
Johnny, it's like Christmas morning, you're on the clock.
Speaker 1 (00:13):
Oh well, well look who's come crawling back? When they
need to talk NFL.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
Football today, tomorrow, probably Monday, John, I could talk and
FL football all the time. And I don't want to
kill Quinn with it, Like I mean, you don't I
talking about it.
Speaker 1 (00:27):
I think you kind of do, actually, But that's okay, John.
Speaker 2 (00:30):
I've talked Quinn about Will Campbell's arm length every day
all week long. It's ridiculous. Is it a thing or not?
Speaker 1 (00:39):
It's a thing, and the reason it's a thing, and
it's okay. I'm going to dive into the weeds right
away and I'll apologize to you. Listen to Bay. At
the EDIFL Combine this year, everyone's arm lengths were like
a half an inch to three quarters of inn shorter
than they were at like the all star games like
the Senior Bowl and the Shrine Bowl, and then when
they got measured at their pro day. And the funny
(01:01):
thing is is that they're measured by NFL scouts at
all those events, so I don't know if they're Doude
at the combine and like a bad tape measure or something, right,
But the combine arm measurements were all very short this
year for some reason. I've never seen it before. It
was something new. He always a little confusing.
Speaker 2 (01:17):
Is this a conspiracy by NFL owners to not have
to pay left tackles a ridiculous amount of money?
Speaker 1 (01:23):
But look, you don't have to pay until they get
unto the league later on. It doesn't matter of where
they get drafted. So I do not have a good
answer for you there.
Speaker 2 (01:30):
It's so ridiculous. Like I'm listening to the sports Hub
in Boston. It's literally been a week it was Celtics,
but a week of the arm length thing. It's ridiculous.
Speaker 1 (01:38):
In my head, I have like a like mini Tranno
source that has really short arms trying to do these measurements,
and they're just jealous of like, you're gonna have short
arms too.
Speaker 2 (01:46):
I think there's gonna be every lineman's gonna have short
arms because of all the uh, we've been holding a
phone for two generations, right, I agree? All right?
Speaker 1 (01:54):
John?
Speaker 2 (01:54):
So I read and it was last weekend, so maybe
things change that the Giants front office was on shid
Or Sanders with the number three pick.
Speaker 1 (02:03):
Yeah, I'm not sure how much I buy that. You
see a lot of stuff out there in the media
at this time of year leading up to the Draft.
It's called lying season for a reason. I've seen the
giants connected the Store Sanders. I've seen the giants connected
the Tyler Shook. I've seen the giants connected to Jackson Dart,
I've seen the giants connected to Jaln Milroe. So I
would honestly say there's a chance they could be in
(02:25):
the market for any of those four guys when they
pick at thirty fourth overall in the second round, I'm
pulling honest with you. I could see them sitting at
thirty four and picking I can see them trading up
back into the first round and picking a quarterback, or
I guess see them not picking a quarterback at all.
I think their options are wide open. Would they like
to walk away with the quarterback, Yes, But if they
really don't believe one of these guys is not just
going to be maybe he could be a starter. Like,
(02:47):
if you got to want to think these guys, one
of these guys is going to be a very good quarterback,
to use that type of draft caple on him in
the draft that might not be great at the top,
but it's great in the second and third round.
Speaker 2 (02:56):
But you don't just need a guy who's just great
at being a quarterback. You need a guy who's great at, like,
you know, leading men to victory.
Speaker 1 (03:04):
You know what I mean? You know that is that's
absolutely true. And I think most all four of those
guys I think do have traits to be leaders. I
don't think you're looking at any of those guys that
have issues in terms of commanding a room. But it's
a really good point.
Speaker 2 (03:18):
How can they How can the Giants screw up the
third pick by taking a quarterback who turns out to
not be a star.
Speaker 1 (03:26):
The way they screw it up is by going off
of their scouting board and evaluation and picking someone that's
not ranked high on their board. And I just I
know the way Joe Shan operates, I do not think
he's going to do that. You can reach for needs,
but I really do think, and this might sound weird
for a team that only has three wins, I think
the Giants did do a good job and free agency
(03:47):
kind of filling their roster out so they do not
have a glaring we have to draft this guy at
this position so we can start this year althwise, rare
screwed type of situation. So I think they're actually in
a pretty good spot to not do that, and I
don't think they are going to do that. That's the
only way the screw up the third overall pick.
Speaker 2 (04:04):
Now, I know, because you were grown men and it's
like our dungeons and dragons. But sports, you've probably got
a draft board in the Schmelk office. Who do you
have the Giants taking with the third pick? Or do
they even pick third?
Speaker 1 (04:17):
I do have a draft board in the Smell office.
I'm not in the Smell office yet, but I do
have a draft board that that that is correct. Well,
you know, actually I should say this. I do not
have like a draft board hanging on the wall. I
have a Excel document in my computer.
Speaker 2 (04:29):
So I that's because you have a wife for the board,
all right.
Speaker 1 (04:35):
So I will roll my D twenty and then I
will decide the Giants are are likely to pick. I
think it's going to be Abdual Carter if I had
to make a guess, And I think if the Giants
see these players and I don't know if they do,
like the consensus draft community in including myself, that Cam
(04:55):
Wore's little first, Travis Hunter is gonna go second. I
think we pretty much know that as the point based
on what I'm hearing, and then the next best player,
or you can even argue the best player in the
draft class depending on who you talk to, is Abdul
Carter the pass rusher out of Penn State, which he
can do. He's a really good player. He's been compared
to Von Miller by multiple people I've talked to, that
type of pass rushing ability, the Michael Parsons comparisons out there.
(05:18):
Obviously he could went to Penn State as well wear
the same number. So I think that would be a
pick that they would be very happy with, and I
think Woul would get pretty high reviewed.
Speaker 2 (05:27):
What's what's his what's his attitude? How is his attitude?
What's his personality?
Speaker 1 (05:31):
Do we know he's a Philly guy, So I think
he has some edge to him, which, by the way,
is not a bad thing. I mean, you want your
like you want your defensive ends and like edge players
to be a little nasty like. You don't want some
like happy, go lucky dude like, oh, I'm gonna look
you up. I'm pick your bet talk with you. You
want a guy that that that's going to like beat
up the opposition and the abdul Carter definitely has a
(05:54):
bit of an edge to him.
Speaker 2 (05:55):
And then there's talk of this gent running back moving
up the ranks here on that raft board. Ashton, Yeah,
I mean the Giants wouldn't look to replace Saquan. That
would be foolish, like do that again, But people want
to move up for him. How high do people want
to go?
Speaker 1 (06:09):
I think that I think you'd be sitting there at five.
The Jaguars are going to take him.
Speaker 2 (06:13):
If the Raiders want him.
Speaker 1 (06:15):
Well, the Raiders take you after Jacksonville. I if look if
the Patriots and I don't know, I know where you're
going with this.
Speaker 2 (06:21):
I'm not stupid, No, I trade, but I wonder if
the Giants would get a trade offer.
Speaker 1 (06:27):
I'm sure they will, but I think I think it's
more good. I don't think the Giants would get enough
to move down because of how good Carter is, but
I honestly do think and all jokes aside, I'm happy
to ask the question that the Patriots could be a
trade down team they need an offensive tackle so badly.
This is not an offensive tackle class. So if a
(06:47):
team like the Raiders they wanted Ashton Genty and they
want to move up for him, I think that would
be a move that makes sense for the Patriots. To
move down a couple of spots. You still get your
offensive tackle, maybe get extra day to pick for your trouble,
and then you go off on your merry way. So
I think it's less likely for the Giants at three,
more likely for the Patriots at four fourteen looking to
trade up for gent who, by the way, in my opinion,
(07:09):
and this is just my opinion, not the Giants. There
are three elite players that are non quarterbacks in this draft,
this guy Abdul Carter and Ashton Gents season rushing record
or do you come close to it? He just missed it.
I think he was like fifty yards short, but he
was like he had almost he had more yards after
contact this year than I think any other running back
(07:32):
had before contact or some crazy stat like that, Like
he was unbelievable.
Speaker 2 (07:36):
Hey, John Schmilp, shouldn't the draft be in a convention
city like Chicago or New York? It's in green Bay. Yeah,
it's a small town.
Speaker 1 (07:44):
Frankly, well, green Bay's like the Mechco football you know,
I get it. But look, I didn't have to travel
to the draft. I've been traveled with the draft in
the WAW since we're doing and I'll tell you about
all the live shows we're doing later. But I'm sure
it was not easy to find like hotel rooms out
there for all these people going after the draft there.
I think they're saying there could be anywhere from two
hundred to three hundred thousand people attending the draft this year.
(08:08):
They built a big thing in the parking lot outside
the stadium, so I think it's gonna be crazy. Do
I think there were probably some logistical difficulties given the location, probably,
but look to be able to do it outside of
Lambeau Field in Green Bay, that's pretty cool.
Speaker 2 (08:24):
Agreed, Schmall. Who's to give us someone we don't know about?
Who you think you would like to see the Giants draft?
Speaker 1 (08:32):
Oh that's a good question.
Speaker 2 (08:34):
Who's who's available? You got your board?
Speaker 1 (08:37):
What rounds?
Speaker 2 (08:39):
Middle rounds? You know what I mean?
Speaker 1 (08:40):
Okay, middle rounds? I got you, Okay, So I'm going
to give you a couple of names at a couple
positions of neat how about that. I think the Giants
could use a defensive tackle. Tylee Williams out of Ohio
State is someone I think they could pick it thirty four,
really good run stuff where he's like three hundred and
thirty pounds. Just a really safe player that you're going
to draft. You're gonna be happy of what you get.
(09:01):
He might not be a star, but he's going to
be like a ten year starter. He's gonna be really
good against the run. This is an awesome running back class,
which is why one of the reasons why I wouldn't
take Genti that early is I think you could have
as many as eight running backs that become either part
time starters or full time starters in this draft, maybe
even up to ten. I think it's that good of
a class. Yeah, Kama Scatta, who's awesome. By the way,
(09:25):
I think I have him as a second round player.
I'll give you a name maybe you have not heard yet.
UCF R J. Harvey. This is a guy that is
a big play waiting to happen. He's really fast, He's
elusive if he catch you out of the backfield. If
you're looking for like a explosive fastback to compliment, more
of a between the tackles bruiser. He's a guy that
(09:47):
I think you'll really like another day. Two guys who
care for that guy. Auger Harvey's a monster man. He's
a lot of fun to watch it just just look
at his highlights and there's a play from last year
against Colorado where he literally outruns Travis Hunter and he
just pulls away from him in the open field. It's
a lot of fun. Jalen Knowle is the wide receiver
out of Iowa State in the second round. I really
(10:09):
like I would keep an eye on the Patriots for
that possibly in the second round, the second para. I
think he's a really good player, very much in the
Laddin McConkie mold from last year. So the Patriots, I
believe you guys picked Jalen Polpe over Ladden McConkie last year. Yeah,
that was a mistake, So don't make the same mistake again.
Go out there and and get Kayalen Nole. He's a really,
(10:30):
really good player. You draft a side.
Speaker 2 (10:32):
What about Aaron Rodgers? The in the and the Vikings
Now are they really talking to him?
Speaker 1 (10:37):
I don't know. I mean, I don't know what Aaron.
I don't think Aaron Rodgers. I don't think Aaron Rodgers
knows what Aaron Rodgers is doing half the time.
Speaker 2 (10:45):
All right, all right, schpiell Hey tell us where we

Speaker 1 (11:41):
Okay, that sounds good. And I'm thinking Will Campbell for the.
Speaker 2 (11:45):
Past right now.
Speaker 1 (11:47):
I'm thinking Will Campbell, which is not a surprise, but
you need him Will Campbell and Tan John all right, Oh,
I'm not sure that he might. He might not be
there at ten. I can see the Saints, I can
see the Raiders. I can see the Jets all picking
up into tackles. Sure down too far.
Speaker 2 (12:02):
Bro, Thanks funny. There you go, Josh.
Speaker 1 (12:04):
Everybody
