Speaker 1 (00:00):
Joel Hoakstra from Trans Siberian Orchestra. Everybody, Hey, Joel.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
Hey, what's happening? Thanks so much for having me on.
Speaker 3 (00:08):
Joel from White Snake Play with Night Rangeries. We've had
him on the show time and time again since the
last time we talked to you. Joel, you have not
or have you gotten yourself in any Dave Groll like trouble.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
I have not gotten myself in any Dave Groll like trouble. Now,
you're a good boy, Joel.
Speaker 3 (00:26):
Are you still in New York City?
Speaker 2 (00:28):
Yeah? New York Yeah? Cool?
Speaker 1 (00:30):
All right, all right, So let's talk about this twentieth
anniversary of the Lost Christmas Eve. It's great and it
just makes me feel a little bit old, frankly, knowing
that I was there for the first one when you
were selling it on QBC. But it's crazy, right, So
what's the difference between this and all the other shows
that we've had.
Speaker 2 (00:48):
Yeah, I mean, if you haven't if you haven't seen
Trance Siberian Orchestra before, there's always this story on the
front half of the show, a rock opera, if you will,
And this year that story is the Lost Christmas Eve,
which we haven't since twenty thirteen plus it's been reworked,
so even if you've seen it back in twenty thirteen,
it's going to be changed. And then the second half
(01:08):
of the show is a little bit more of a
free wheeling rock concert if you will. That focuses on
the production, the magnitude of it if you haven't seen
Tso it's the visual spectacle, video wall, the width of
the arena. We've got state of the art pink Floyd
laser light shows, state of the art pyrotechnic show, performers
(01:29):
performing on hydraulic lifts that got over the crowd, and
we're out running through the crowd, playing right in front
of you, and it snows inside the arena. So I mean,
it's just really fun across the board right and you're not.
Speaker 1 (01:43):
It reminds me of how many trucks you guys have
when you're rolling through the country.
Speaker 3 (01:48):
Massive production.
Speaker 2 (01:49):
Yeah, yes, well yeah, it's it's just like as it's
a visual spectacle, but you got the story on the
front half that gets everybody in the holiday spirit. So
as cliche as it is, people always say, oh, there's
something in the show for everybody, but it's ro it's true,
really yeah, it gets like the adults gravitate towards the
(02:11):
story because it gets them in the holiday spirit. The
kids love the visual and things. I mean, what kid
hasn't wanted to look at a video screen for two
straight hours? So they get to see all the projections
and everything that accompanies the music on that, and of
course all the pyro and everything and lasers. They love that.
Speaker 1 (02:27):
It's like it's a yearly tradition for so many people.
Like it's how they they bring in the season and
they celebrate it with Trans Siberian Orchestra every year, and
I love that the full family. As a matter of fact,
pretty sure it's what got me married to my wife Joel.
Speaker 3 (02:41):
Yeah, so seal the deal for one of our first dates.
Speaker 2 (02:44):
Bro, Hey, you can't blame me for that. You can't
blame me for that.
Speaker 3 (02:48):
So tickets are on sale ten o'clock. We we have
our show November twentieth, envyp Arena. This is just one
performance this year. Sometimes it's two. Well you guys, I mean,
you're unbelo believably busy doing like sixty six shows and
forty plus days or some ridiculous like that. It's Joe
hoased from Tso on the phone, Joe, I have to
(03:09):
ask you, last time we talked to you, were you
working on a Broadway play? Were you working for a play?
Speaker 1 (03:15):
No?
Speaker 2 (03:15):
I mean I've done a lot of rock theater in
my day, and even some traditional pitwork. But I mean
the main one that I'm known for is that I
was in Rock of Ages here on Broadway in New
York City for the entire run, so that was a
little over six years. But I've also done some rock theater,
like a show about Janis Joplin called Love Janie, and
(03:35):
a show called it Ain't Nothing but the Blues that
was a little bit more of a I guess a
blues bass musical.
Speaker 1 (03:40):
But back to really quickly the Love Janis. Did you
say you did all those Love Janis shows, even the
off Broadway stuff. Yeah, I mean I think I've seen
that show, Joel, the one with Katrina.
Speaker 2 (03:53):
Yeah, yeah, sure, I worked with kat Yeah we did. Yeah,
we we did that, I guess about two thousand one
through two thousand and three here in New York, and
then I did several sit downs at regional theaters, like
so I'd go live in a city for like two
months and do it there. I think Tucson, Phoenix, to
see if I can recall Louisville, Cincinnati, Cleveland.
Speaker 3 (04:13):
Is that, Joel? Is that a Is that a fun
lifestyle living in a city for a couple months or
is that? Does that? Does that drag you down?
Speaker 2 (04:20):
No? I think it's cool, man, because when you when
you're on tour tour, you don't really see much outside
of the airport, a hotel, and the venue. I mean,
you can maybe get a little window a time where
you walk around the area near your hotel or something
like that. But when you go to a city and
you're there for a couple of months doing a sitdown,
you really actually get to know the city.
Speaker 3 (04:40):
That's cool man.
Speaker 1 (04:41):
You're laying a trail of history here with your music,
my friend, and it's very cool to think of the
three inches of stage that you had on the off
Broadway show and then the monster production of TSL for
the Lost Christmas Eve is incredible. While you've done a lot, man,
it's very cool.
Speaker 2 (04:58):
Thank you so much. I mean, I just just went
after it. Man. I come from a southwestern suburb of
Chicago where it was very blue collar. We were not
all that will to do, and I feel like that.
All this stuff really wasn't supposed to happen for me
in so many ways. I mean I would have been
laughed out of any room if I said I was
(05:19):
going to do all this stuff. So I just just
worked really hard man, you know, and to see it
all unfold and I have the opportunity to do to
do all these amazing gigs, you know, play guitar for
share and obvious sitting with Foreigner for a time too.
I mean, I've had a lot of really really great gigs.
It's just been a fantastic ride. So Trans Siberian Organs
(05:42):
certainly being chief amongst them, to have the opportunity to
work with them, and it's just top shelf as far
as having a musical opportunity.
Speaker 3 (05:51):
You ever go back to that home chown with maybe
one of your fancy sports cars.
Speaker 2 (05:58):
You know, I'm not that kind of guy.
Speaker 1 (06:00):
I just kick he's not though, You're right.
Speaker 3 (06:03):
Tso at the MVP Areno One show only seven thirty

great to talk to you. We'll see you when you
