Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to Sunstein Sessions on iHeartRadio, Conversations about issues that matter.
Here's your host, three time Grasie Award winner, Shelley Sunstein.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
I placed an emergency text to my good friend John Feel,
advocate for the nine to eleven community, because on my
way into work this morning, to my horror, I discovered
that some of the CDC cuts job cuts that were

(00:32):
just announced are going to impact the World Trade Center
health program. And I literally said out loud, what the
f and I knew I had to get in touch
with John Field to get the low down of what's
going on and what we're going to do about it.

Speaker 3 (00:51):
So, John, what is going on?

Speaker 4 (00:54):
Well, A lot's going on, and thank you for having me, Shelley.
And it seems every time.

Speaker 5 (00:58):
We talked is always bad news, sad news, devastating news,
and this is all of them combined. Originally, when it
was first reported on Friday, it was only ten percent,
and now it's twenty percent, and we're here in the.

Speaker 3 (01:13):
Wait a minute, what was ten percent is twenty percent?

Speaker 5 (01:16):
The cuts to the CDC we're only going to be
ten percent, but now we know it's twenty percent, and
that's devastating and they could be future cuts up to
forty percent.

Speaker 4 (01:27):
We don't know that yet, but you.

Speaker 5 (01:29):
Know, we're fighting two battles now because now we have
to adjust this issue. And after several interviews and several
meetings and talking with the powers that be, we're formulating
a game plan. But we also have to go to
DC next week to introduce a piece of legislation to
get three billion dollars put the World Trades in the
health program.

Speaker 4 (01:50):
This is stressful and my heart bleeds for the nine
to eleven community.

Speaker 2 (01:55):
Hold on, John, just let's back up here, because I
think people are missing a key thing thing here. How
are the cuts to the CDC going to impact the
World Trade Center Health program?

Speaker 3 (02:08):
What does this mean?

Speaker 5 (02:10):
Well, if Shelley was a nine to eleven responder and
she wanted to get into the program, the enrollment process
will be slower. Now there was already a backlog, and
that backlog just got bigger. If Shelley got into the program,
he had to having the patience to wait that long
and she was diagnosed with cancer, her certification to get

(02:35):
free healthcare.

Speaker 4 (02:36):
And then compensated for her cancer.

Speaker 5 (02:38):
That's going to take a lot longer because the people
that were cut were in charge of enrollment, we're in
charge of certifications, in charge of research grants, in charge
of fraud prevention, and the.

Speaker 4 (02:54):
Cut has left this already understand team of professionals.

Speaker 5 (03:02):
This program is now weaker and exposed, and because of recklessness,
the lack of humanity, is inhumane behavior, is going to
cause so much harm to the nine to eleven community

(03:23):
heroes and survivors, those who lived to work, that went
to school in Low Manhattan, those who worked on the pile.
And I don't care if you voted for Donald Trump
or you didn't vote for Donald Trump.

Speaker 4 (03:34):
His administration is responsible for what happened this weekend.

Speaker 5 (03:38):
That's just fat and Elon Musk, Robert Kennedy Junior. These
are unqualified people that truly know how.

Speaker 4 (03:47):
The federal government works and operates.

Speaker 5 (03:49):
Yeah, is defraud in other areas of the federal government,
probably not my concern. We're talking about the World trades
and a health program that's never ever once had any
fraud or abusive spending ever. But we've been down that
road a million times and we've come up clean every time.
This program is a lifeline to one hundred and thirty

(04:12):
seven thousand people. You know, in twenty fifteen there was
seventy five thousand people in the program.

Speaker 4 (04:17):
Ten years later, it's almost double.

Speaker 5 (04:19):
In five years from now they'll be one hundred and
eighty thousand, and ten years from now there'll be two
hundred and something thousand. Cutting this program by twenty percent
or more in the future will kill people.

Speaker 4 (04:32):
It's fact.

Speaker 2 (04:35):
What can our what can our listeners do about it?

Speaker 4 (04:39):
John Peel, Well, they can call the White House.

Speaker 5 (04:42):
They can call their New York members, the mimiams of
the New York delegation. If you listen to this around
the country, you can tell them that this is outrageous,
this is not this is not acceptable, and that they need.

Speaker 4 (04:53):
To reverse this.

Speaker 5 (04:54):
You know, they cut the nuclear program people, and then
they reinstated them when they realize they made them.

Speaker 4 (04:59):
As right, this is a mistake on such a large
scale that we're little you know, I.

Speaker 5 (05:08):
Don't want to be facetious or sarcastic, but you know,
the campaign slogan was make America great again, make America
healthy again.

Speaker 4 (05:16):
You're not making America great again or healthy again.

Speaker 5 (05:19):
By taking away free healthcare or prolonging their chance to
get free healthcare. By doing this, I mean, you're contradicting yourself.
You know, the federal government operates a certain way. These
men are unqualified. They don't know how to legislate, they
don't know how to govern, and they don't know the
nuances of the federal government.

Speaker 4 (05:39):
It's just that simple.

Speaker 5 (05:40):
If they did, they would understood that this is a
program that's never been accused of fraud or be suspended.
But yet we're dealing with that now. On top of
going to Washington, d C. They actually three billion.

Speaker 4 (05:54):
Dollars when the world trades and help Rom and Shelley.

Speaker 5 (05:56):
This cut hurts grand that are doing research and illnesses
to the build.

Speaker 4 (06:05):
Down the road.

Speaker 5 (06:06):
You know, in March of this year, a month and
now they were going to introduce that heart, cardiac, and
autoimmune we're going to be added to the bill.

Speaker 2 (06:20):
And that would be huge because I can't tell you
that going to be times.

Speaker 5 (06:25):
That would be epic, that would be monumental. That would
be a victory that we haven't had in.

Speaker 4 (06:30):
Such a long time.

Speaker 5 (06:32):
That would allow people to now finally get treated for it,
but also go back and file another amendment today claim
to get compensated. So this is hurting everybody. This is
going to want to be a snowball effect to this,
and people are going to suffer more than they're already
suffering from the nine to eleven illnesses.

Speaker 4 (06:50):
This is fact. This isn't me being dramatic making stuff up.

Speaker 5 (06:53):
This is real life, real time people suffering who are
going to suffer more.

Speaker 2 (06:59):
I'm speaking with John feel one of the biggest advocates,
if not the biggest advocate for the nine to eleven community,
and the reason I asked him to join me today
really on an emergency basis. I just said to him
in a text, you know, I need to talk to
you now because we learned that these cuts to the
CDC are going to impact those of you who are

(07:22):
in the World Trade Center Health Program, those of you
who are trying to sign up for the World Trade
Center Health Program, and those of you who need to
have the certification so that you can get compensation from
the Victim Compensation Fund. But you were already well, first

(07:42):
of all, you know, lobbying members of Congress is one
thing with this, but this is all bypassing Congress. So
who are you going to be lobbying when you go
to Washington.

Speaker 4 (07:55):
Well, it's not a matter of lobbying them on this issue.

Speaker 5 (07:58):
We're going to lobby members of Congress the bill that
we introduced next week that we were cut out in
December by Elon Musk. Again, We're going to put pressure
on the White House and the administration and the Secretary of.

Speaker 4 (08:10):
Health to do the right thing, to do the morally right.

Speaker 5 (08:14):
Thing, to if you want to cut corner somewhere else,
cut corner somewhere else. If you want to stop fraud
somewhere else, go knock yourself out. I support that. I
believe in the small government. But I also believe that
this government has.

Speaker 4 (08:27):
A responsibility to the hundreds of thousands of.

Speaker 5 (08:30):
People who lied to on September sixteenth in two thousand
and one when they said there was safe.

Speaker 4 (08:34):
To breathe in the water was safety journey?

Speaker 5 (08:36):
That law has caused thousands of deaths and tens of
thousands of illnesses.

Speaker 4 (08:42):
In men and women uniform in non uniform.

Speaker 5 (08:45):
Who believed that their federal government would take care of them.
And now disadministration's lack of empathy and humanity and the
ability to know right from wrong is going to cause
so much damage. And I'm repulsed and I'm disgusted that

(09:07):
I'm here on Tuesday, the eighteenth of February talking to
my dear friend who we could be talking about something
good from ones, just something good like, oh, by the way,
did you know that so and so just survived cancer?
And here's another thing show nobody talks about this.

Speaker 4 (09:26):
The nine to eleven.

Speaker 5 (09:26):
Community has a higher percentage of living now than the
general population when it comes to cancer.

Speaker 4 (09:33):
Wow, and they're.

Speaker 5 (09:35):
Going to they're going to interrupt that.

Speaker 4 (09:38):
They're going to disturb that, and they're going to ruin that.

Speaker 5 (09:41):
So if Shelley, if you had lung cancer and I
had lung cancer years ago, nine to eleven, lung cancer's
on steroids, it's going to kill me, you have a
fighting chance. But now we have a higher survival rate
than you do because we have early screen and protection.
We have yearly physical some people have more than yearly physical.
We have blood work, chess X or you aurine tests, everything.

(10:04):
And now they're going to interrupt that. They're going to
cause people to die because of that. And after twenty
four years, our doctors, our scientists, our caseworkers, our nurses,
our camment, everybody has twenty four years of experience and
what to look for.

Speaker 4 (10:21):
What are the symptoms? How can we detect this early?

Speaker 5 (10:24):
This is a well run, organized, understabbed machine that is
doing its job. And instead of cutting it, they should
have said.

Speaker 4 (10:35):
You know why, you're doing a great job. Let us
give you more money so you.

Speaker 5 (10:39):
Can hire more people, because you're doing a really good,
epic job. You know, if you're a common sense thinking person,
and I don't care if you're Republican or a Democrat
or black, white, tall, short, skinny, Muslim, Catholic, Jewish.

Speaker 4 (10:53):
If you're just a common sense thinking.

Speaker 5 (10:54):
Person, why would you do this.

Speaker 4 (10:58):
This isn't an entitled.

Speaker 5 (11:00):
This isn't something that these people getting mega rich off of.

Speaker 4 (11:03):
They're getting healthcare because.

Speaker 5 (11:05):
They were lied to by the federal government, and they're
getting compensated. And the compensation isn't oh my god, you
can walk down the whole the street in New York
City and trip on the side. Well, can get a
lot more money than you would get from the victims'
compensation front.

Speaker 2 (11:21):
And the thing is the people that I'm hearing, particularly
first responders who are just now getting ill. I am
hearing over and over again, first symptom stage four, first
symptom stage four. It's like cancer on steroids. And also

(11:41):
I cannot believe the number of people I talked to.
I just spoke days ago with Simon Kirk, the drummer
for Bad Company and Free. I was speaking to him
because they were nominated Bad Company for the Rock and
Roll Hall of Fame. But I also know that Simon
was a Red Cross driver volunteer for six weeks. He

(12:03):
was taking people to and from ground zero. I said, Simon,
how's your health? It's okay, yeah, but Simon, have you
signed up for the World Trade Center Health program? You
need to be monitored. You need to be checked because
do you know why John Field He's stopped with the
volunteering after six weeks because he was starting to get

(12:25):
health issues. He was noticing the cough and even he
you know, I'm begging him, sign up with the World
Trade Center Health program. Even if you're still healthy, You're
going to be monitored. They know how to monitor you,
they know what to look for. You're going to be
in the best hands, God forbid if you get sick.

(12:47):
I just had this conversation.

Speaker 5 (12:49):
I employed Simon to get into the program, and by
him getting into the program such a high profile person,
it would help others get into the program, who were in,
who are hesitant to get into the program.

Speaker 4 (13:02):
He has a responsibility as.

Speaker 5 (13:04):
A celebrity, and there were many celebrities in the program
to get in and do what's morally right, and I
imployed him to do so.

Speaker 2 (13:13):
Okay, we only have two minutes left. Hit us up,
what do you what can we do? What do we
need to know? Come on, John Field? Are you John Field?

Speaker 4 (13:24):
Yeah? You know, you know.

Speaker 5 (13:25):
Listen, it's gonna take a village. It's gonna take a
village to get this reverse. It's gonna take a village
to get the bill.

Speaker 4 (13:31):
Pass that was seeking that was cut in December.

Speaker 5 (13:34):
And call your members of Congress, call the White House,
called the New York delegation, if you're in New York,
tell them to uh up their rhetoric. And you know, if,
if if the Democratic Party in New York State does
not want to fight the way John Field wants to fight,
then get.

Speaker 4 (13:52):
Out of my way and let me do what I
do best.

Speaker 5 (13:54):
Because I'm not happy with the leadership in New York.
I'm not happy with the leadership in this country from
a party who does not know how to street fight.

Speaker 4 (14:04):
And right now, we're in a street fight.

Speaker 5 (14:06):
People are going to die, Shelley, and I can't emphasize
that enough.

Speaker 4 (14:10):
Human beings. Strip all titles, Shelley, strip them. No Democrat,
no Republican, no man, no skin color, no religion, human beings.
We're talking about humanity.

Speaker 5 (14:20):
We're talking about friends and family and siblings that are
going to die, that are going to leave people behind
because of neglect by the federal government.

Speaker 3 (14:29):
If people want to join you in DC, how do
they reach you?

Speaker 4 (14:33):
They just I'll be wearing bells. They'll find me.

Speaker 5 (14:35):
But if they want to go to my you know,
they can email me at feel thirteen at aol dot com.

Speaker 4 (14:40):
Feao.

Speaker 5 (14:41):
You know, if you want to say something nice, say
something nice. If you disagree with what I said today,
I'm not going to entertain your argument because I know
them one hundred percent right.

Speaker 4 (14:49):
I don't open my mouth until I know them one
hundred percent right.

Speaker 5 (14:52):
These cuts are monumentally irresponsible and reckless.

Speaker 4 (14:57):
Are going going to kill people.

Speaker 2 (15:00):
We need to do the right thing, people. We need
to do the right thing. Okay, thank you so much,
John Piel. We will be back in touch and hopefully
with good news that this is taken care of and
I know you are on it.

Speaker 3 (15:15):
I know I can count on you.
