Speaker 1 (00:00):
When you want more road Runners, We've got more road Runners.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
This is the Tucson Roadrunners Insider Podcast. Everybody, Welcome back
to the Tucson Roadrunners Insider Podcast. Jonathan Schaeffer here with
Kim codorobas we continue our musical chairs when it comes
to rotating. The two hosts of this show, Adrian and Kim,
were taking things over while I was away. I came
(00:27):
back last week's On last week's show as Adrian and
I talked to Travis Barron. Now this week, Adrian's back
on vacation, so I am here now with Kim. Next week,
I'm also gonna be out of town once again.
Speaker 3 (00:40):
Are you again?
Speaker 2 (00:41):
Yes, so it will most likely be Kim an Adrian.
Not fully confirmed yet, but well yeah, we'll figure that
out later on. But yeah. So this week we got
Cameron Heebik, the Tucson fan favorite. Cameron Hebig having his
best season statistically last year, being nominated the AHLs Man
of the Year for the Tucson row Runners, and we
talked to him for this week's show. Well, here he
(01:03):
is your fan favorite of the Tucson Roadrunners. Number thirty nine,
Cameron he Big, Cam, how's it going man? How's the
off season been for you so far?
Speaker 1 (01:12):
I'm doing good, doing good. Good to be on the
show with you guys. Thanks for having me. How are
you guys doing.
Speaker 2 (01:17):
We're doing fantastic, so good. We're doing good. Cam. Usually
how we do this is we have a player recommend
the next player that we get on the show. And
we had Ryan McGregor in the latest one or the
two episodes ago, and then he recommended Travis Barn. But
the problem is we did not right, We did not
ask Travis Barn to recommend the next player, but I
(01:39):
feel like he was going to recommend you anyways, because
we talked about you and just like the core group
coming back. So I just thought, let's just give grab
Cameron hebe because we haven't talked to him yet.
Speaker 1 (01:50):
Yeah, for sure, no excited to be on with you guys,
looking forward to the chat.
Speaker 2 (01:55):
So I guess let's just get started right off the bat, Kim,
with the rapid fire.
Speaker 3 (02:00):
You're gonna have to differentiate, Johnny between Cam and Kim,
because I want to you're talking to.
Speaker 2 (02:08):
I know, I guess I d and Kim. Yeah, well,
let's just get start with these rapid fire questions. Kim
This is the first time you and I are going
to be doing this, so I'm hopefully we don't screw
it up. But I guess you have the first word.
Speaker 3 (02:23):
Wait, hold on, I gotta I gotta pull open the email.
I am, as Adrian says, the most prepared person ever.
Hold on one second. Okay, I'm ready.
Speaker 2 (02:32):
I guess I'm just moving a little too quick here.
Speaker 3 (02:34):
All right, give me some time to wake up. It's
only too hard.
Speaker 2 (02:37):
Cam. You ready? Cameron? Are you ready for rapid fire?
Speaker 1 (02:40):
All right, let's do it.
Speaker 2 (02:41):
Let's do it.
Speaker 3 (02:42):
Downtown Tucson.
Speaker 1 (02:45):
Great Restaurants, Steve Potvin, knowledgeable and work ethic. Oh okay,
Summer family time and recharging the fans of Tucson dedicated
some of.
Speaker 3 (03:01):
The best karaoke.
Speaker 2 (03:04):
Oh not my forte here twenty three twenty four.
Speaker 1 (03:09):
Season Patience and Continuous Learning. Best friend, my brother, favorite band,
Alan Jackson. Is that a band? Does that count?
Speaker 3 (03:23):
That's a good one.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
Yeah, that counts.
Speaker 3 (03:24):
That counts.
Speaker 1 (03:26):
Road trips anywhere that leads to a lake.
Speaker 2 (03:31):
I like that. Your uncle's farm.
Speaker 1 (03:33):
Oh hard labor, bananas, banana bread.
Speaker 2 (03:41):
Oh, the Bakersfield Condors Rivals Now.
Speaker 1 (03:48):
Ryan Reynolds, not my humor. Canadian actor though.
Speaker 2 (03:54):
Oh your four point game versus Colorado last season.
Speaker 1 (04:00):
Wanted to do it. I want to do it again. Tomma
mock Hill, nice walk.
Speaker 2 (04:08):
You're Man of the Year nomination an honor.
Speaker 3 (04:13):
Oh the Olympics.
Speaker 1 (04:16):
Respect the dedication those athletes have.
Speaker 2 (04:19):
Favorite theme night beach.
Speaker 1 (04:21):
Night, Gordie how legend from Saskatoon and.
Speaker 2 (04:27):
My favorite the last one. Adrian Denny, Voice of the
road Runners. Hey, there you go. Hell Cameron, I feel
like you gave such insightful answers to those rapid fire questions.
Usually other guys are just saying beauty great. Most people,
for Steve Poppins, say Jacked are strong because he just
(04:48):
has that muscular T shirt on all the time. So yeah,
good answers, man, Thank you.
Speaker 1 (04:53):
Yeah, putting me on a spot like that, I hope that. Yeah,
no making me think those were great?
Speaker 2 (04:59):
So, Camra and so twenty three to twenty four season,
probably your best statistically, and you know you had that
four point nine against the Colorado Eagles at the end
of the season. Just tell us a bit about just
how that season was for you as a whole, and
you know, not only that before the team as well.
Just battling throughout the season, battling for that first place
(05:21):
spot in the Pacific Division. You know, we fell showing
the playoffs, but it was just successful as a whole.
Speaker 1 (05:28):
Yeah, for sure. I think when I look back on
the season, I think of I think of making playoffs,
and I think this strong year we had and finishing
second and getting that high seed, and yeah, I think
every year has its own challenges and you always learn
something new. And I think for me it was some
patience and just trying to be ready and when I
(05:49):
got in the lineup, I just wanted to make the
most of it. And yeah, it was. It's a good group.
It was a lot of fun last year and played
with a lot of good players. And I think not
the playoffs the first round obviously, that was a bit
of a sting there, but I think we can always
learn from that. And going into this next year, I think, yeah,
(06:13):
it's gonna be another strong year for us.
Speaker 2 (06:16):
And now going into twenty four to twenty five, the
stat I wanted to tell you, you're only fifty seven
games away play games played away from tying the all
time most games played as a Tucson Roadrunner. And then
of course you need the fifty eighth to break the
all time record. So that's that's one big thing. But
just we're your expectations for this next season for yourself.
Speaker 1 (06:39):
Yeah, I didn't know that. Wow, that's uh, that would
be pretty cool. Yeah. I've been in Tucson for four
years now and I loved it, So to get the
opportunity to return here for another season, I'm really looking
forward to that, really excited. So but yeah, no, I'm
just gonna focus on game by game and uh, looking
at it as a year as a whole, and looking
(07:01):
for the team to succeed and help any way I can,
and I think that's what I might. I'm focused on
and what can I do to bring value to the team.
So but yeah, that's cool, So hopefully maybe we can
get there.
Speaker 3 (07:16):
You're at the point cam where we're just starting to
think of you as a Tucson native at this point,
like you're not from Saskatoon, You're from Tucson. So I
want to say, and the question is coming, I promise.
I'm assuming that you've gone this length of time without
ever having to try any Mexican candy until last season
(07:38):
when we forced you to try Mexican candy.
Speaker 1 (07:43):
That was the first time, Yes, that was the first time. Okay,
that was interesting. Yeah, I remember that. There were some
some interesting ones. I haven't had any of those. I
don't think so, but it's good.
Speaker 3 (07:55):
You lie, you liar. I wanted to ask because when
they showed okay, so I handpicked all of that candy myself.
But this is the thing, I'm not a huge Mexican
candy person either. My I don't do well with spicy foods,
which is a huge embarrassment to everybody in my family.
But when they showed the video of you during the game,
(08:17):
you didn't They didn't actually show you consuming any of it.
So that's my question is did you actually taste all
of it? Because I actually tasted all of it to
make sure that it was like somewhat okay for you guys.
I was a little bit worried with some of it.
But did you actually taste it?
Speaker 1 (08:32):
Yes?
Speaker 2 (08:33):
I did.
Speaker 1 (08:33):
Yeah, I think I tried pretty much close to everything.
After the salty ones there, what were salted? I don't
know if I could taste after that, but yeah, I
try them all.
Speaker 3 (08:48):
I'm so sorry. I felt bad because somebody should have
been in the room to tell you not to pop
that whole thing in your mouth. You don't eat them
like that. And saladitos is one of the things that
I actually do eat, but usually we put them in
a lemon or an orange and you just let them
sit there for like hours. You put them in the
fridge and then it kind of dissipates the salt and
(09:10):
then it's kind of like sweet but tangy at the
same time.
Speaker 1 (09:13):
Yeah, maybe know, Yeah, I'm sorry.
Speaker 3 (09:16):
I got called away. I had to do an interview
and so I couldn't be in the room. But I
thought I had told somebody in the room, like don't
let them and then there was like some of it
that was a little bit spicy that I was worried about,
you guys, but I thought it was funny when we
did the outakes, Johnny, I don't know if you saw
this when they showed the outtakes. I think it was
during one of the last couple of games where John
Leonard called you out and said, did you even taste
(09:38):
any of it?
Speaker 2 (09:39):
Yeah? I think I remember that. I loved the clip too.
When I think it was Melos and Ratu they were
both tasting them as well, and they I think it
was something they've just never even seen before, which was
probably my most favorite part of that.
Speaker 3 (09:57):
There was some of that candy that even I was like,
I've never seen it before, so it was like a
new experience for me.
Speaker 2 (10:05):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (10:06):
No, it was a good idea. Otherwise I probably would
have never had the chance to do that, So I
thought it was awesome.
Speaker 2 (10:11):
So now you know pretty much what we need to do, Kim.
You need to be there like the whole time so
that these guys know what they're doing, because if they
tell then they're going to eat the whole thing. I once, right, Yeah,
the way to do it.
Speaker 3 (10:24):
I felt so bad about that. I would have loved
to see the video of each one of you popping
the whole thing in your mouth. Every I think every
two Zonon would love to see that, quite honestly. But Camp,
I was gonna ask you, also, how is Lena. How
is your niece doing?
Speaker 1 (10:38):
She's great? Yeah, thanks for asking. He's actually up at
the lake right now and first time or no, she's
been up a couple of times, but yeah, camping and
she's buzzing around. She's about a year and a half now.
So anytime I get the chance to get some time
with her is always great. Been to the spray park
(10:59):
with her a couple of times and she loves that.
And yeah, whenever they need a hand out at the farm,
I'm always eager to get out there because I get
I know I'll get some time with her. So it's
a it's always a lot of fun.
Speaker 3 (11:13):
Wait, so your uncle has a farm, right, Yes? And
what kind of farm is that? What is he?
Speaker 1 (11:20):
So my uncle is a cattle farm and then my
brother's grain farmer.
Speaker 3 (11:25):
Oh, I didn't know that. I didn't know. I didn't
know your brother was also a farmer.
Speaker 1 (11:30):
Yes, yeah, just got into it. So they're loving it.
They're enjoying it. It's always kind of been his dream
to do that, so it's hard to start out as
that way. But his wife's family was our farmers, so
it's a worked out, good and way to get into it.
So yeah, they're loving it.
Speaker 2 (11:50):
Is it just? Is it just you two? Cameron? You
and your brother? Do you have any other siblings?
Speaker 1 (11:53):
No? Yeah, he's my only sibling.
Speaker 3 (11:56):
Wait, Johnny, you have to guess. Do you think Cam
is the older brother or.
Speaker 2 (11:59):
The Oh that's a good I'm gonna go with the
older I'm gonna go with the older brother.
Speaker 1 (12:07):
Yeah, he is older than me two years old.
Speaker 2 (12:10):
Oh, he's older than you. I got a rock. That's awesome.
That's like the dynamic of that where your brother is
the farmer and then you're the professional hockey player. But
of course you still go there in the summers to
help him out. But I like that.
Speaker 1 (12:24):
Yeah, we're very different in some ways. He h he
can fix anything and very handy and can build anything.
And I always rely on him for that kind of thing.
So and then me kind of the athlete and uh,
but I definitely can learn some things from him being
out there and the way he thinks and operates. It's
(12:45):
it's actually pretty impressive to to see him working and
just he can he can fix anything.
Speaker 3 (12:51):
So wait you help him?
Speaker 2 (12:56):
Go ahead. Oh no, I was just I was just
gonna add to that. Just I have a big I
have a really big family, and we all kind of
do different things. Where my brother's in the Air Force,
my sister is like a head of security at UPS.
My other sister is or my sister is a nurse.
My other sisters. Sorry, now I'm getting all mixed up.
(13:19):
You have see now I'm getting myself mixed up because
I sold any siblings, brothers in the Air Force, sisters
works for ups, other sisters and nurse. My other brother
still lives at home, but he still works too, and
then there's me the broadcaster, so we're I think it's
always fun when it's like everyone's doing their own different
things and kind of creates a bunch of different stories.
Speaker 1 (13:40):
Yeah, everyone has their different strengths and interest that's for sure.
Speaker 3 (13:44):
So Cam, do you help your brother on his firm too,
because I know you said you spent some time with
your uncle last summer, is that right?
Speaker 1 (13:52):
Yes, Yeah, yeah, I've been out to my brothers a
few times. He, like I said, he's a grain farmer,
so all his crops are in. I wasn't around for
seating so and then, uh so now it's it's kind
of a slower time right now for him, Like he's
he's got a lot of projects around the yard and
stuff like that, So helping him with that and just
(14:14):
doing some painting his gradge and shingling and siding and
that kind of stuff. So and then cutting trees and
triming trees and so it's been good. And then yeah,
my my, uh my uncle is the cattle farmer, and
he's it's a busy time for him now in the summertime.
And so been out there too of quite a bit.
(14:35):
And that's a lot more, a lot more hard work
there doing working with the cattle and the fencing and
that kind of thing. So I've yet to find a
harder job than than fencing on the farm, just pulling
posts and pounding and posts and stringing wire and that
kind of thing. It's a lot of walking up and
(14:57):
down the the the field's there. So but no, it's
it's good to get out there in the country and
help out a little bit.
Speaker 3 (15:07):
Have you ever seen the movie Young Blood?
Speaker 1 (15:11):
I don't think I have, honestly.
Speaker 3 (15:13):
Oh my gosh, really, both of you guys. It's a
hockey movie.
Speaker 2 (15:17):
Yeah, Oh, it's a hockey movie. God, yeah, I.
Speaker 1 (15:20):
Know what you're talking. Oh yeah, I don't think i've seen.
Speaker 3 (15:23):
It though, you know, Okay, so at least you know
what I'm talking about.
Speaker 2 (15:26):
I don't. I'm out of it, Johnny, my.
Speaker 3 (15:29):
Gosh, I am blown away. It's a hockey movie with
Patrick Swayze and Rob Low. They're both like really really young.
I want to say, they're like probably like late teens.
Early twenties and they're playing junior hockey. But Rob Low
grows up on a farm and at one point he
quits the team and goes back to the farm to work,
you know, the farm with his dad. So whenever Cameron
(15:51):
talks about the farm work, I always just picture young Blood.
He's in He's in the barn, you know, like beaten
up bag and doing all the farm work to get
ready you know, like physically for going back in there,
and yeah, playing hockey. That's what I imagine. Okay, so
can you guys please watch On Blood.
Speaker 2 (16:11):
Yeah, I think I gotta watch it now.
Speaker 3 (16:13):
It's it's very very campy. It's I mean, it's from
the eighties, so just mentally prepare yourself that it's not
it's not going to be the most accurate depiction of
hockey that you've ever seen in your life. But it's
very entertaining.
Speaker 1 (16:27):
Yeah, that's true though. Yeah, the I think the farm
strength is is a real thing. I can't say like
I'm not a farm didn't grow up on a farm,
but for sure the labor that goes in, like the
hard work, and but for me, yeah, it gives me
perspective and like if I'm having a hard day at
the rank or tough stretch in hockey, Like I think,
like I could be fencing right now. So it's not
(16:50):
all that bad. It's uh so it gives me, gives
me some perspective during the season. Playing hockey for a
living is a great thing to do.
Speaker 3 (16:59):
Wait, Cam, what do your parents do for a living?
I don't know that we've ever asked you that before.
Speaker 1 (17:05):
My dad works for the City Askatoon, he's an inspector.
And then my dad or sorry, my mom works for
the University of Saskatchewan.
Speaker 3 (17:14):
Oh what does she do.
Speaker 1 (17:16):
She's in online kind of distance education and building programs.
And yeah, that's interesting.
Speaker 3 (17:26):
I don't know why, but I just assumed that you
grew up on a farm.
Speaker 1 (17:29):
Also, no, just yeah, all my my mom did, so
all her brothers and sisters are all on a farm.
So that's kind of how me and my brother, my
brother and I kind of got into it. And that's
kind of what got his interest and why he wanted
to do it.
Speaker 2 (17:47):
So, so you were nominated for the twenty twenty three
twenty four hl's Men of the Year by the road Runners.
You know, just the time you spend here, as you said,
you're entering year number for now you can break the
most games played in the Roadrunners uniform. And you know,
being nominated by such a prestigious award like that, What
(18:08):
did that all mean to you?
Speaker 1 (18:10):
Yeah, that was that was a huge honor.
Speaker 3 (18:12):
It was.
Speaker 1 (18:13):
It was pretty cool. And yeah, I just I love
I love trying to get out in the community and
being with the fans, and I know they really enjoy it,
and I know I really enjoy it. So it's great
to get out there. And I remember when I was
a young young kid coming up, I always looked up
to the the older hockey players. So if I can
(18:36):
kind of give back like that, going out on the
ice with them or that kind of thing. And and
then yeah, all the fans, they come out and support us,
so it's the least we can do. So yeah, it
was cool. And I know there's our whole team is
always out in plair appearances and you guys do a
(18:57):
great job setting that up, and it's great to get
out in the community like that.
Speaker 2 (19:02):
Yeah, just what do the fans mean to you here
in Tucson again, just spending all these you know, seasons,
days games, Just as you just said, being out in
the community. Just what do they all mean to you
as well?
Speaker 1 (19:14):
For sure? Yeah, they they're great. I mean they some
of them are very dedicated and always out at the
games and no matter what, like they're early on there
when I was there, we kind of struggled a bit,
but they still showed up, and yeah, we wouldn't wouldn't.
It's great to have the energy, you know, on a
(19:35):
Tuesday night or whatever it is. They bring. The energy
helps us get going and and seeing in the in
them them in the community, it means a lot to
us that they want to come out and support us. So,
you know, a lot of them are. They're great to
chat with, great people, and it's been a lot of
fun getting to know some of them.
Speaker 3 (19:55):
You talked about kind of being one of the older
guys in the locker room. It's hard to imagine you
saying that because you're still only twenty seven. Yeah seven, yeah, yeah, okay,
So to hear you say older is very jarring. But
you've had the opportunity to work under some incredible captains,
(20:17):
some great leadership, and now is you know one of
those guys in the locker room. What kind of leader
do you think you are? And how do you take
what you've learned from all the people that have been
in your life and like make that your own and
you know what does that look like for you?
Speaker 1 (20:36):
Yeah? For sure. I think I think everyone is different.
Every leader is different. For me, I think, you know,
I'm not the most vocal guy or that kind of thing.
I just kind of kind of go about my business
and try to lead lead by example and the way
I work and prepare and kind of show up that way.
(20:58):
And I think everyone has different things they can offer.
I've I've learned a lot from a lot of different
leaders over the years and players that come like Adam Kracknell.
I really respected how he went about his business. And
you know, when I was in Bakersfield, Brad Malone like
just nothing ever seemed to phase him, and he was
(21:20):
just just such a good leader and good to the
young guys. So seeing how those guys were, and I
mean now that I'm older, I kind of think, like,
who would I want to be? I would want one
of those guys when I'm that age. So that's what
I try to be for these guys. And if I
can try to help out in any way or happy
(21:43):
to do that.
Speaker 3 (21:45):
Have you read any books. So, Johnny, I don't know
if you know this, but Cameron is a huge reader.
And I'm not saying that sarcastically in any way. Cam,
have you read any books on leadership? And what are
you reading right now?
Speaker 1 (21:57):
I have read quite a few on leadership. Yeah, some
Navy sealed books about leadership and that kind of thing.
So yeah, it's it's always great to learn and the
different leadership styles and how you can make an impact
and how you want to lead in that kind of thing.
And for me, I think it comes down to treat
(22:18):
people how you want to be treated and have respect,
and yeah, work hard and that kind of thing. So
what what am I reading now? I actually haven't been
reading a whole lot this summer, if I'm being honest.
It's just been really busy and haven't had a whole
lot of time. But I know I should be making
(22:40):
some time. But during the season I usually have more
after practice or in the evening, some some downtime, bus rides,
plane rides, that kind of thing. So yeah, I got
some some books on the shelves here ready to crack open.
Speaker 3 (22:55):
Wait, do you ever read for fun? I know you
talk a lot about reading to learn, and you know,
constantly want to do, you know, expand, expand your horizons,
expand your skill set. But do you ever just read
mindless stuff?
Speaker 1 (23:09):
I've actually, yeah, gotten into that a little bit, because
sometimes it can, Yeah, when you're trying to learn and
get better and that kind of thing. Sometimes I like
to just just relax. And I've read a couple of
novels lately and it's been nice to just just read
and not not Yeah.
Speaker 3 (23:29):
What kind of books you have to tell me? I
need to Cameron, he big reads for fun.
Speaker 1 (23:35):
The last novel was where the Crawdads sing.
Speaker 3 (23:41):
Oh that's intense.
Speaker 1 (23:42):
Yeah, and then wow, I think, Oh, I forget the
name of the other one. I'll have to get back on.
Speaker 3 (23:51):
What's the genre.
Speaker 1 (23:54):
On the hole?
Speaker 2 (23:55):
Man?
Speaker 1 (23:55):
I don't know, you don't know, like like, yeah, I
haven't read a whole lot of novels, but yeah, you
got any recommendations. Oh you guys a big reader.
Speaker 3 (24:05):
I'm a huge reader. Yeah, but I read the place,
but I only read for fun. I do a little
bit of learning when i'm reading. But Johnny, you said
you don't you don't read too much?
Speaker 2 (24:19):
No, I just it's tough for me. I just don't
have the like kind of attention span. I guess to
just keep looking at words. I want to get into it,
but I just it's just something I wouldn't see myself doing.
But Kim, it's funny that you first asked about the books,
because I think last year one of our first Happy
Hour podcasts you asked Cam the same thing, and Cameron,
(24:39):
at the time, you were reading a book on finance. Yeah,
and that that's just funny. How now we're we're fast
forward all the way to here in the summer, and
we're still talking about books.
Speaker 3 (24:50):
I always ask him about books because I know he reads,
and I don't know if any of the other guys
on the team are big readers, but I am. So
that's why I like to know what he's reading.
Speaker 1 (25:00):
Yeah, No, I appreciate the question.
Speaker 2 (25:03):
So Cam, we talked about oh sorry, we talked to
Ryan McGregor and Travis Bear and before getting you on,
and we talked about this again. Bringing the core guys back,
and of course, as every AHL team goes, you lose
players too, because there's just there's always another opportunity out there.
But you know, what our guys did, what our coaches
and management is you know, they check the boxes off
(25:25):
on you know, who were we able to bring back,
and now we got the prospects coming in, We have
the second year guys coming back, and then now we
have some other veterans coming to the team as well.
So just you know, what's the twenty four to twenty
five team going to look like for you guys with
the core coming back, the new guys, and then now
there's some very skilled veterans coming to the team.
Speaker 1 (25:47):
Yeah, for sure. I think every year there's always some
turnover and always some new faces. But I think management's
done a good job of bringing just having good p
I think that's that's number one. And you know a
lot of good character guys and that's huge for addressing room.
(26:07):
And yeah, some of the guys you mentioned it, it's
great to have them back, and some of the new
faces I don't know personally, but I've I've heard great
things about them and good, good leaders. So yeah, it's exciting.
It's exciting to you know, come back to familiar with
some guys and and kind of have the same group
(26:29):
and I know we're all all working towards the same
goal and searching for the same things. And you know
a lot of them, you know, bring different things to
the table, and I think it meshes well and and
and I'm gonna have a successful year here.
Speaker 3 (26:47):
Okay, wait, real quick, circling back to the book thing,
because you asked for recommendations, and it took me a
minute to think. If you get a chance to read
the book, ready Player one, it is one of my
favorite books. The movie is completely different from the book.
You end up in the same place at the end
of the movie that you would in the book. But
the book is so well thought out and well, it
(27:11):
just it makes so much sense and it's just a
really really fun read, highly highly recommend ready.
Speaker 1 (27:19):
Good to know. Yeah, looking for recommendations, So I'll write
that one down.
Speaker 3 (27:25):
Awesome, all right, So Cameron, let me ask you if
you were going to be an Olympic athlete in the
summer Olympics, what do you think your sport would be.
Speaker 1 (27:35):
Oh, that's a good question. Yeah, I've enjoyed watching the Olympics.
I like, yeah, I've like watching the track and the
sprints and that kind of thing. I don't know how
good of a track.
Speaker 3 (27:55):
You think about it?
Speaker 1 (27:56):
And yeah, I want to know, maybe the the cathlon
just a bunch of different things.
Speaker 3 (28:04):
The cathlon is that where you have to do like
the steep woul chase and the what do you do
in de caathalon?
Speaker 1 (28:10):
I think it's running and the long jump and.
Speaker 3 (28:16):
Is there one where you have to like skeet shoot
at some point you have to shoot something? Am I
making that up? Because I haven't been watching a lot of.
Speaker 2 (28:23):
The track the crazy ones, the was it the triathlon
where you're like swimming, running, biking. Yeah, it's like all
of them together. That's like the only big one. Yeah,
I know, see, what do you think.
Speaker 1 (28:36):
That the cathlons? Yeah, like ten ten maybe track and
field events.
Speaker 3 (28:40):
Is Oh my gosh, Well that makes sense because it's
Stuka right, so Beca's time. Yeah, the cathalon, Oh my gosh,
it's so much So that would that would be your sport?
Speaker 2 (28:54):
Of that?
Speaker 1 (28:54):
Oh? Maybe that Maybe that was a bad choice. Super
specialized in one thing, but maybe I could get away
with like being good at other Yeah, I don't know.
I got a lot of Yeah, those athletes. Athletes are
pretty impressive, how they being at the top of their
field and the work they put in and waiting four
(29:16):
years and yeah, the discipline and dedication. It's it's pretty
cool to see.
Speaker 3 (29:21):
So I have to tell you what the decathlo is
because it's so much. So it's one hundred meter race,
four hundred meter, fifteen hundred meter, one hundred and ten
meter hurdle race, the long jump, the high jump, the
pole vault, the discus throw, the javelin throw, and then
the shot put. That's a lot.
Speaker 2 (29:40):
That's a lot. That's a lot.
Speaker 1 (29:43):
You want your Yeah, maybe maybe break dancing is that
that's a yes?
Speaker 2 (29:48):
Yes, yes, that's like been the hot commodity of this
Olympics is that there's break dancing. So Cam we asked
this last week, who's the best break dancer on the
team or who would it be? And he said, Ryan McGregor,
who do you think would be the best breakdancer on
the team.
Speaker 1 (30:05):
Yeah, yeah, Greg, he would be a good one. He's
got some moves. I'm trying to think. Yeah, Ben McCartney,
that that'd be pretty funny to see.
Speaker 3 (30:15):
That would be hysterical to see. We need to make
that happen.
Speaker 1 (30:19):
But no, definitely not me. I was just joking with that.
I can't dance at all.
Speaker 2 (30:22):
So we did say too that we should try to
see if we can make breakdancing one of our pregame routines,
because you guys get that soccer ball and you kick
it around, and we know Parker's got the music. So
I don't know, maybe we should start implementing some breakdance
pregames during the season and see how that goes.
Speaker 1 (30:40):
You feel a good idea.
Speaker 3 (30:41):
I will definitely have my phone out if that happens.
Speaker 2 (30:46):
Good for the content, that's for sure.
Speaker 1 (30:48):
Yea, yeah, I'll be nowhere near that one.
Speaker 3 (30:52):
Yeah, yeah, I can imagine. Wait, so, Cameron, I have
asked a few players over the summer if they were
stranded on a desert island, you know which couple of
guys from the team what they bring with them, and
your name consistently comes up. You are the Swiss Army
Knife of this team. Apparently everybody wants you on the
desert island with them, which doesn't have a ton to
(31:15):
do with my question, but it does a little bit.
If you were in a zombie apocalypse, how long do
you think that you would last?
Speaker 2 (31:24):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (31:24):
Wow, I think I could. I think I could last. Yeah,
I think yeah. Go in the country and just hide away.
Maybe I don't know, and see how long I can
get away from them. Hmm, but yeah, yeah, I don't know,
get some, get some. Yeah, I think I could. I
(31:49):
think I could hang in there for quite a bit.
Speaker 2 (31:51):
I think you already have the skills of a farmer.
You know. Just go find a farm and and just
do what you do during the summers and you're fine, exactly.
Speaker 3 (32:02):
Okay, Cam, I have one last question for you. Do
you want to hear a joke? Do you want to
hear a dead joke?
Speaker 1 (32:09):
Yes?
Speaker 2 (32:10):
I'm scared for this.
Speaker 1 (32:10):
Are you ready?
Speaker 3 (32:13):
What do you call a goldfish in a bow tie?
Speaker 1 (32:17):
What? So?
Speaker 2 (32:19):
Phisht caated, Oh my god, Oh that's ah. That was good, good,
good job.
Speaker 1 (32:28):
Yeah, that.
Speaker 2 (32:31):
Was good. All right. I think I think it's I
think it's good to end things off there. Cam, thank
you so much for joining us once again. Anything you
uh half for us before we uh send you on
your way, I.
Speaker 1 (32:43):
Don't think so. It was good to good to chat
with you guys. Thanks for thanks for having me on.
How are you guys doing? Are you guys? You guys
beating the heat in Tucson? Or how's sour Ben?
Speaker 2 (32:51):
It's it's been fine. I mean I was gone for
a bit, but I'm just I just got back, so
you know, I'm just now finally experiencing the the monsoons here,
which are kind of cool, but yeah, it's good, just
another day. Kid's shaking her head, so I don't know
why she's shaking her head.
Speaker 3 (33:08):
Because it's so humid. I can't breathe. I can't breathe
with this humidity. Every every local Tissan is saying the
same thing. We're used to the hot summer. But then
when you look at I look at my app and
I'm like, oh my gosh, it's only ninety degrees outside.
I'm going to go for a run. And then I
go outside like I literally feels like somebody just left
you in the face with the wet towel and I
(33:29):
can't breathe, and so I'm losing my mind.
Speaker 2 (33:33):
Wow. Yeah, you'll go from dry heat to like humidity
and minutes it's it's insane. Like my first day back,
I saw it and I was like, so that's how
they are here.
Speaker 3 (33:46):
But we're having like some beautiful storms, like almost every
night is just beautiful, beautiful storms. But the humidity is Yeah,
it's apparently making me an insane person a little bit.
Speaker 2 (33:58):
Apparently so well, well, Caim, once you get back here,
hopefully late September or what's the October, then hopefully'll cool
down a little bit here. Yeah, we can't wait to
see you and have a good rest of your off
season and we'll be ready for twenty four to twenty five.
Speaker 1 (34:14):
All right, looking forward to it, Thank you very much. Yeah,
look forward to seeing you guys. Take care, thanks, jim By.
Speaker 2 (34:20):
All right, Yeah, so there you have it. Cameron, he big.
We forgot to ask him who we should bring next,
so we'll try to figure that out. But Kim Cam's
always just such a delight to talk to. I mean,
just a very intuitive guy. You know, he spends his
off seasons by the farm and he's still constantly working,
and I was thinking, like, that's gotta be tough when
(34:41):
he's working at a farm and he still has to
train in the off season to get ready to play
professional hockey.
Speaker 3 (34:48):
Kim is so down to earth, and because maybe because
it's he's he's a big reader, just very articulate and
has great answers for everything. Just a lot of fun
to talk to. Yeah, he's just I think that's why
I think that the fans and Tucson pick up on
what a great guy he is, on that energy that
(35:10):
he has. And I don't know if you remember, but
there was a jersey auction last season that we did
where Cam's jersey went for the highest amount and it
was if it wasn't two thousand dollars, it was just
over two thousand dollars. And I remember how surprised he
was that that happened, And I was not at all
surprised because he's just that good of a person. He's
(35:31):
a good guy.
Speaker 2 (35:32):
Yeah, And he's just that kind of player. And honestly,
you can say this for any single player on the
team last season and currently right now too. It's just,
you know, they they don't have that how would I
say it? Just that's that cockiness to him, because they're
very team worthy. And you know, as much as you
praise them and say wow, like what a great game
you had, they just say, yeah, thank you, it was
(35:54):
a great team effort. You know, they're very it's a
very team oriented team, and camera hebicks just definitely on
the top of the list of those kind of players.
And that's the kind of players you want, because in hockey,
it's one of the biggest team sports. Out there. You
have guys relying on each other every single game. And
you know, when I heard the news that Cameron Hebig
was coming back, I knew that it was just huge
(36:17):
for Tucson.
Speaker 3 (36:19):
Absolutely. I think I know that, you know, because my cousins,
some of my cousins are season ticket holders. He's just
a fan favorite, and I think kind of two Son
collectively holds its breath at the end of every season
to wait and see if he's coming back. And then
we get the news and everybody kind of goes Okay,
as long as camera's here and you know that, you
(36:40):
know that you're gonna have that fundamentally great human in
the locker room, then everything else will fall into place.
Speaker 2 (36:46):
Yeah, And that's just how every off season goes in
the AHL. You know, it's guys are always going to
be looking for new opportunities. The lots of guys on
one year two way contracts are just a one year,
one way contract, and that's just how it is. But
you it makes you appreciate more of guys like Cameron heabig,
Ryan McGregor, Travis Barron and and all the other guys
we were signed too. A lot of this team is
(37:07):
staying together. Of course, you have some players here and
there went off for new opportunities, and we wish them
the best of luck. But you know, Kim, you look
at this team, and Adrian said a last week, it's
definitely the road Runners are going to going to be
in the run for first place in the hl's Pacific Division,
especially that Coachella Valley lost a lot of players too,
so it's gonna be a fun year.
Speaker 3 (37:28):
I'm kno getting on wood. Yeah, I hate, I hate
to get too far in front of ourselves, but I'm
not getting on.
Speaker 2 (37:34):
I liked that's my job in the off season. So Kim,
let's get to our draft. So yeah, because of the
week for me, I got I finally get a new car.
Everyone's heard on this podcast the congratulation and months and
days that I've had issues with my car. I have
finally folded under pressure and got a new car. I
(37:55):
have a twenty twenty four Honda Civic. I got it
on Monday. So that's the big news. So, Kim, you
gave me a really good topic for our hockey topic.
Favorite postgame interviewee because we do postgame interviews. And then
I also chose a great one our favorite kinds of cars.
So which one do you want to start with? Favorite cars?
(38:16):
Our favorite postgame Interviewee.
Speaker 3 (38:17):
Hm, well wait, first of all, back up to your car. Yes,
it's it's like a gun metal gray kind of gray color.
Speaker 2 (38:28):
I would just say dark gray gray.
Speaker 3 (38:31):
And does does she have a name yet?
Speaker 2 (38:34):
No, it's yeah, I might so my last car and
I wanted to drive my Chevy Cruise till it, you know,
it died like I was warning to drive that thing
for years as sentimental value for me. My grandpa bought
it for me when I was in high school. He
has passed away sense, so I wanted to keep that car.
But you know, the cost of repairs just kept going
up and up and up, and you know it was
(38:54):
just time. But uh, my last car never had a name.
So I want to name this next car coming up.
I haven't come up with one yet. But kind of
funny how it went. I walked in there because I
was I was just gonna get a loan through a
different financial institute. Walked in there to just get the
deal like writting on paper. Like you don't get the
car right off the back because your your the financial
(39:17):
institution has to send a check or send the money.
They offered me a lower APR and I was like, oh,
I'm getting this car today. And I was there for hours.
It was during the workday. I'm texting Adrian, like, because
Adrian's gone by, I just want to make sure he
knew that, Like, hey, I'm not in the office right now.
I'm about to get a car, you know, very unexpected day.
But I'm just happy, Like you know, I'm driving home
(39:40):
on this coming Fridays.
Speaker 3 (39:42):
So, like to California.
Speaker 2 (39:45):
I'm driving back to California in my new car. Now.
I got my new car here in Tucson, so like,
I'm really looking forward to this drive because it's just
gonna be fun. I'm get to play with it some more. So. Yeah,
so finally have a new car. So we'll be riding
into the next season in style. I guess.
Speaker 3 (40:00):
Congratulations. Keep us updated on the name if you need, yes,
maybe I'll maybe.
Speaker 2 (40:04):
I'll maybe I'll do a little poll on Twitter and
see if, oh, for sure, timey should name my car
when I have some final names. All right, let's since
we're talking about cars, let's drive cars first. Okay, let's
do and since you are, since you were the one
who came back this week, I'm gonna let you go first.
Speaker 3 (40:20):
Oh okay, thank you.
Speaker 2 (40:22):
What does agent never let you go first or something?
When I let you go first?
Speaker 3 (40:27):
There, no, no, no, no, no, I'm trying to I can't
even remember if he lets me go first or not,
or how it goes.
Speaker 2 (40:34):
Let me go first. Last week he was like, since
you're back, I'm gonna let you go for he let
me go first on both of them. I was like,
oh wow, I'm gonna go out here.
Speaker 3 (40:43):
So my first car, okay, so all these cars are
super random. Yeah, you're super random.
Speaker 2 (40:51):
Okay, yeah, mine are pretty random too. I actually have
a wild card that I think is gonna be funny
to name. But okay, but yeah, you go first.
Speaker 3 (40:59):
Okay. So my first car is the remote control car
that brings javelins back to the javelin athletes at the Olympics.
Have you seen this? It is the best thing ever.
Speaker 2 (41:09):
To Look it up right now, Okay, look it up.
Speaker 3 (41:12):
It's the the RC car that when the person throws
the javelin and it goes down the field, the little
the person at the end of the field picks up
the javelin. There's a little remote control car there they
put the javelin like they stick it into the car.
It's like a little convertible, and then it takes the
javelin back to the start and it's the best thing
I've ever seen.
Speaker 2 (41:32):
The tiny robot cars that pairs at field events explained, Yeah,
that cool looking at least, I yes, the one I'm
looking at from Oh that's funny, like this, this one's
an actual car, but it's just a smaller version of it.
Speaker 3 (41:46):
I want one.
Speaker 2 (41:47):
I think they're so cool, new little cars. Wow, we
are starting off really gone on this draft. So my
first pick is a I guess I'm just gonna say
a Chevy Camaro because I was a big Transformers fan
growing up, and as everyone knows, Bumblebee is a yellow
Camaro throughout the entire franchise, and I just grew up
(42:09):
every and it was like at that point where every
time you see a yellow Camaro, You're like, there's Bumblebee
right there. So yeah, of course, yeah that was my
first pick.
Speaker 3 (42:16):
Oh that's okay. So the funny thing is that my
second pick is the Chevy Camaro, but it's a very
specific nineteen sixty nine convertible rally sport Chevy Camaro. Google
it gorgeous right here.
Speaker 2 (42:28):
I was just like, in general, No, that's a.
Speaker 3 (42:30):
Car you can feel, you can feel it in your soul,
like it's fantastic.
Speaker 2 (42:35):
Nice. Nice, Okay, you go. So my next pick, just
because my parents have had the car or the brand
of the car for a while, I like BMW's and
I just did some research on like the coolest looking one.
I guess the BMW four series is the coolest looking,
So I guess that's that's my second pick, just because
I remember at first, before I knew that, you know,
(42:56):
they tend to have problems. I've always wanted to get
BMW for my next car, and obviously I do have
my next car now, which I'm totally happy with because
I actually did like a lot more research. But bnwws
are just cool looking. I wish they weren't then just
have like a more bad reputation for like the repairs
they always need. But if not, it would be a
really good car. My parents have had the same one
for years, but it's given them a lot of issues.
Speaker 3 (43:18):
Wait, what year is your parents car?
Speaker 2 (43:20):
Gosh, it's pretty I want to say two thousand and seven.
I want to say that. Yeah, they've had it for
a while, and I'm surprised you haven't gone. I'm assuming
it's paid off. I don't know, but I've had just surprise.
I haven't tried to get a new one yet because
it's just, uh, I've had to do a lot of
repairs on it. I'm like, well, that's just the engineering
(43:41):
of it. And again, all BMW's are known for semi
being bad. I'm sure some of the brands are good,
but uh, I think that's just kind of how every
car brand goes. Some are good, some are bad.
Speaker 3 (43:52):
That is so funny. Okay, so one of my later
picks is a BMW, so I'll come back to that.
But my number three is the Ferrari eight one two Competition,
which is if you follow Formula one at all, that's
the personal car that Charlotte Clare and Carlos Science both drive.
If you get a chance to google it, absolutely phenomenally
(44:13):
gorgeous card. They make less than a thousand a year. Geez, gorgeous.
Speaker 2 (44:17):
Have you seen the four Versus Ferrari movie?
Speaker 3 (44:20):
Yeah, of course, yeah, I'm a huge movie.
Speaker 2 (44:24):
It was like one summer and it came out and
my family watched it. We watched it like three times
that summer because we just couldn't stop. It was so entertaining.
It was just the story of it. And if you're
a big car I'm not a big car person, but
if you are a big car person, that is the
movie for you. So, speaking of movies, kim, My next
pick is the Dolorean from Back to the See see. Yeah,
(44:45):
that I should see. I should have put that in
my as my first but uh, good pick. I was
just thinking, like, Okay, what's that's what's like a wild
card pick I can go with? And what's a really
famous car from like movies? Because I love movies, And yeah,
Sky go with the Dolore and you can't go wrong
with it.
Speaker 3 (45:00):
It's a good one. That's a really good one.
Speaker 2 (45:01):
Okay.
Speaker 3 (45:01):
So we got to my BMW finally. So I had
to get a rental recently because so I drive a
v in a BMW and she was in the shop
and I had to get a rental.
Speaker 2 (45:12):
So Smorry, I just spoke everything into for so, sorry
I'm kissing your car. You didn't even say anything.
Speaker 3 (45:20):
I'm like, yeah, I see what you want to say. Great, No,
she wasn't it. She wasn't It wasn't her fault that
she was in the shop. But I had to get
a rental that I had for about a month, and
it was a twenty twenty four I five, and that
was the funnest car that I've ever driven. I didn't
(45:44):
want my BMW back. I'm My next car is an
I five. It's fully electric.
Speaker 2 (45:50):
Sometimes it takes you. You just got to be in a
car and you just feel for it. Like when I
got my car. I first was shooting for a twenty
twenty five hont A Civic Sport and when I went
to dealership, they're like, oh, dude, like we just sold
it last night. They had one left, and I'm like ah,
but I was already there. I already made the trip,
and I was like, okay, I'll look at your twenty fours.
And they showed me a sedan. It was red. I'm like,
(46:12):
I don't want a red car. And they're like, how
about our hashback? And I was like, okay, I thought
of hashbacks. So they showed me the hashback and it
just felt right. You know, you just get that glimpse
of like that moment it's like, all right, I want
this car and Yep. We made it work and now
it's I get the drive it every day, so it's
it's phenomenal. Gosh, what was my okay, so speaking, yeah,
my next pick, speaking of Honda Civic, Hanta Civic Sport.
(46:34):
It's not the car I got. Again, I'm happy with
what I have, But those Civic Sports are cool looking, man,
especially the hashbacks. They're nice, cool looking cars. I also
realized that there wasn't really too much of a difference
between the Sport and the regular, and the Sport was
more expensive, so that's also why I would decided to
go with regular. Just like, you know, faster engine and stuff,
but here in Tucson, you don't really need a fast
engine because it's kind of hard to get everywhere as
(46:56):
it is. But uh yeah, so Honda Civic Sport was
my fourth pick. So I guess these are our last ones.
Speaker 3 (47:02):
Okay, my last one, and this was my car before
the car that I'm in right now. Jeep Wrangler, any
Jeep Wrangler. I've driven two Jeep Wranglers in my lifetime,
and they are so much fun. They are such a vibe.
But I was driving to Phoenix a lot, and there's
one thing that you cannot do when you have a
(47:23):
soft top chief wrangler, and that is have conversations with
people because it's all outside so loud. Yeah, it's just
always loud, way too loud, and it's two sounds, just
really hot. There's no insulation between.
Speaker 2 (47:35):
Yeah, it's just a er. That's why you have people
in my gosh, maybe in Florida might be too hot.
Speaker 3 (47:40):
Too, but it's it's a San Diego had I had
one in San Diego, and I live.
Speaker 2 (47:45):
Spot for one because you get that missed, you know,
especially in the winters. So I'm going to San Diego.
That's why I'm also out oftown. I'm going to San
Diego next week, so I'm really yeah, look forward to
that trip. My last pick just to stick with the
Chevy's Shelley Chevy Malibu. I was actually the first car
I looked at when I started looking at cars, because
it's just a kind of upgraded version of a Chevy Cruise.
(48:06):
I'm you know, I just like to keep it simple.
But then once I started thinking about maybe just expanding
and getting a brand new cars just to make it
feel new, That's why I went with Honda. But I
don't know, maybe a Malibu will be back on my
weapertoire one day.
Speaker 3 (48:19):
So you got two Chevy there. Nice.
Speaker 2 (48:22):
Yeah, I know I like Chevy. I like Chevy, but
I'll have my Honda for hopefully a long time.
Speaker 3 (48:27):
But finger scratched. I have a feeling you're gonna be
You're gonna be in it for a minute.
Speaker 2 (48:31):
I hope. So, whether you have a kid, are picks
for our favorite cars? You have about thirteen minutes before
you have to go pick up your son from school,
so we'll uh, we'll do this next one quick. So
next one our top favorite players to interview. I will
go with the first one because I feel like we're
most likely going to go with the same pick. But
first one, for me, it's gotta be Matthew Walt.
Speaker 3 (48:53):
I knew you were gonna say Mattie.
Speaker 2 (48:55):
You're gonna say Maddie. Probably that's why I'm decided to
just go first.
Speaker 3 (48:58):
Actually he's not on my list because I knew you
were gonna pick it.
Speaker 2 (49:01):
Oh okay, you already knew he's just and again, this
is full disculpture. Every player is a treat to talk
to on this team, Like I enjoy talking every single guy.
But uh, Mattie's just always down. You know, he comes
off the ice, he's you know, tired and sweaty from practice.
It's like, am I can't grab you real quick? He's like,
you sure can. And he's just he's always a treat
to talk to.
Speaker 3 (49:22):
Awesome and good pick, good pick. My number one is
Patrick Kotch and I don't know how many of our
fans know Patrick or have spent time talking to him,
but he is absolutely a gem of a human being.
He's fantastic. And it's funny because I call him the
Incredible Hulk because he is the incredible Hulk on ice
and he is Bruce Banner off the I t is
(49:43):
the most good analogy, isn't it? That is him one
hundred percent. He's so down to earth. He's super chill.
He's with his sons and his wife, you know, like
he's just a really fun guy to talk to. Could
not be it doesn't have an aggressive on his body.
And then he gets on the off the ice, he
(50:05):
doesn't have an aggressive bone in his body on the ice,
I don't know who that person is. He's scary. He's
scary on the eye.
Speaker 2 (50:11):
And again, as I said, like when it comes to
hl off seasons, you just don't know who's moving, who's
coming back. When I saw you was coming back too.
It's just there's another guy that we were just able
to keep as part of the core. And you know
he's gonna be a huge piece of that defensive defensive
cores as well for the next season. So next next
one on my pick, we talked to him last week,
(50:32):
Travis Barron, you know, just one of those veteran players
that always has a good insight for what's to come,
you know, especially when I talked to him for pregame.
He just he always he's a he's a very smart player.
And the next player I'm going to say on my
lesson is also a really smart player. But yeah, Travis
is just one of those guys, is a veteran presence
who just knows what he's talking about.
Speaker 3 (50:53):
M H for sure. Okay, so kind of the same.
For my number two pick, it's actually Cameron he Big
I love. Yeah, just like you said, Yeah, he's just it.
He's eloquent and insightful, and I know that he probably
hasn't gotten any media training, but he feels like somebody
who maybe has gotten some media training at some point.
Speaker 2 (51:15):
One of these guys have really I mean, it's just
when a guy is really good at just interviewing straight
off the bat, and you know they're a rookie or something,
it's like, gosh, like they were just prepared for this.
But I guess luckily they get a lot of that
into juniors too. And but my next pick again, another
player who I think is really smart, a player that
we brought back. I think we got him on one
(51:35):
of those qualifying offer free agent signings. Milos Kelman. Every
time I talk to him, oh yeah, he's really like
he really he can explain a play so well and
just the way it happened, and of course talking about
the team and how they were able to win that day.
So just again, every guy knows what they're talking about.
Mimilis is just one of those guys who has a
(51:56):
really good insight of what's happening.
Speaker 3 (51:58):
Good pick, absolutely, good pick. He's such a presence, like
she's such a presence.
Speaker 2 (52:04):
Yeah, and he's really and he's really tall, so he's
just yeah, you're holding that thing up microphone.
Speaker 3 (52:11):
Okay, So my number three might be a surprise. It's
Black Coltronic. I absolutely love talking to Blad because Blad
is still I feel like learning in the English language,
and he had he puts a lot of pressure on
himself to always be right when he's speaking, so you
can tell that he's thinking about what he wants to say.
(52:32):
But he does such a good job. He does such
an amazing job when I interview him, and he's just
a lot of fun. He's a really really fun person
to talk to.
Speaker 2 (52:43):
Yeah, well it's it's hard. It's hard for me when
I have to interview on my practice because he's always
the last one out there on the ice. He really
is in every single practice. So you know, when there's
a week where and again throughout the season, I try
to rotate. You know, it's like, who haven't not grabbed
in a while? Who are we grabbing too much? Because I,
you know, I want everyone to hear what these players
have to say. Yeah, and when it's time to get Vlad,
(53:04):
I just know, like, all right, I'm and which is
totally fine. It's like it's good that he's out there,
you know, getting as much practice as he thinks he needs.
But uh, yeah, I'm waiting there for a little bit.
Speaker 3 (53:14):
It's not like it's not like five or ten minutes,
it's like an hour after practice, it's like hours.
Speaker 2 (53:20):
And if anything too, like I have to catch him
before he gets on the ice, and then he's also
the first one on the ice too, So uh yeah,
he's just again one of those guys we brought back
who's a hard working player and he's going to be
huge not only for us, but also in the NHL too.
Oh I'm next, gosh are number four Ben McCartney. Benny.
(53:44):
You know, just even even when it's not interviewing him,
he's just always willing to, uh you know, ask us
how we're doing, and and and stopping to say hi
to us, and uh he you know, again not interviewing,
just a treat to talk to. And when you do
talk to him, you know, he's he's just one of
those captains of the team right now and he always
has something good to say.
Speaker 3 (54:05):
Yeah, I'm a big Ben McCartney fan. I've talked about
him before, so I won't go to another player.
Speaker 2 (54:09):
We also got another player. We're also able to bring
back lots of guys that just brought back. It's just awesome,
awesome seeing everyone that we're going to be seeing these
guys very soon.
Speaker 3 (54:18):
So my next pick. He's he's with us, but he's
down at the EHL level this coming season, maybe we'll
see him. It's Dylan Wells. I love talking to Dylan Wells.
Incredibly articulate, incredibly open and communicative and really super friendly,
(54:40):
like I don't know how just a lot of fun
to talk to. And isn't you know, isn't He doesn't
sound like he's had any media training in that it's
very conversational, like he's just an easy guy to have
it back and forth with.
Speaker 2 (54:54):
Yeah, and we'll see Kim. I mean, I think one
of the big things for us this offseason was we
have a lot of goal tending death now. Yeah, I
mean he brought Dylan Wells in because you know, we
didn't know when Matthew Voalta was gonna get called up.
Anton Thorne was dealing with his injuries. That's why we
brought in Dylan Wells and he ended up having the
phenomenal season he did. Yeah, and now we got I
believe Stopburt as potential backup to Matthew Valta, or at
(55:18):
least him and Dylan Wells are going to be competing
for that backup role as well. So it's gonna be
an interesting season when it comes to our goaltending. But yeah,
Dylan Wells, as you said, I think one of the
biggest interviews I had with him was after we beat
Coachella Valley at the end of the season. Wells had
a crazy game. When I talked to him, you can
just tell he was so hyped and you know, obviously
(55:39):
out of breath. But you know, those wins make it all.
That's much special talking to these guys.
Speaker 3 (55:45):
Yeah, and I think getting a new goaltending coach too,
it's going to be really interesting to see what happens
with that whole lineup. In talking to Charlie McTavish last
season about the differences in Dylan and Maddie and seeing,
you know, kind of who they were, I think Charlie
was able to very easily connect with both of them
(56:06):
and teach them new things. I'll be very interested to
see how things go with goaltending this year.
Speaker 2 (56:12):
But then the thing is, can like goaltending death will
it can go make us go a far away, A
long way, I would say, because Matthew will also gets
called up to the NHL all of a sudden, we're
going to be relying on our on our backups and
then a potential EHL call up. So that's going to
be huge for us. My next player is someone who
had a really good season with us Aku Ratu, kind
(56:34):
of the same thing you said with Coliachnic, just you know,
someone who knows English well but tends to get a
little shy when we're when we're talking to them, but
you know, does a really good job of communicating what
they're saying too. And uh, you know, just someone who's
not only the future for the road Runners, but it
could be a future in the NHL as well, So
you know, and that's what makes it exciting about talking
(56:55):
to these guys too, you know, just knowing that these
guys can go far with these guys can go are
in the NHL, and they're just very professional, and that's
why we all have talking to them every game and
every practice.
Speaker 3 (57:06):
I have so much respect for anybody who at any
point in their life goes to a foreign country and
learns the lang, learns the language, knows the language, but
is willing to you know, speak it at no matter
their level of comfort comfort. I mean that takes a lot,
That takes a lot of bravery, especially to do it
in such a public way as as we're kind of
(57:27):
you know, having the guys do it. I just all
the guys who come who are not you know, North Americans,
to come here and to do that, it's yeah, big,
big props to those guys.
Speaker 2 (57:38):
Yeah, exactly, you got the you got the last pick?
Speaker 3 (57:42):
Are you ready? Okay? My number five? Josh don Why.
Speaker 2 (57:47):
Didn't I think of that? I did? I had Josh
done kind of up there. But yeah, but he's he's
a treat to talk to also, I mean he is,
but he's very professional and you can tell his dad
him ready for you know, talking to media every day,
and especially that you know, he's he became the star
(58:07):
player of the Roadrunners, and he was asked for media
availability probably every week, and it came to the point
where it's like, gosh, we're asking this guy to do
a lot, but he was always down to do it.
Speaker 3 (58:18):
So Josh is somebody that you can tell has been
speaking to the press and the public for a good
part of his life. But he somehow still is able
to keep it very conversational with you when you're interviewing him.
He doesn't make you ever feel like you've asked him
a stupid question or that you're being redundant, and then
(58:39):
you see interviews with other people and you're like, oh
my gosh, he must have been asked this a million times.
But he doesn't. He doesn't ever make you feel like
you're not good at your job. You know, like he's
just yeah, very good at answering the questions and then
somehow still making you feel like like it's it's enjoyable
for him.
Speaker 2 (59:00):
Gosh, I would hope so that it makes it sound
like I'm doing good at my job, because that's never
happened with anyone, But gosh, what'd happened with someone like
Josh Done? I feel bad, But yeah, that's a really
good point. Yet it's just because, yeah, these guys are
asked the same questions day in and day out, and
sometimes it's our jobs to try to make it sound
a little different, you know, especially that we come for
(59:20):
this team and uh, you know again, if we do
end up saying the redundant questions, we do appreciate the
guys giving us the answers regardless of what we ask well.
Speaker 3 (59:28):
And so the hard part for me comes in the
post game interviews trying not to be redundant with the
questions that I'm asking from game to game to game
to game to game, you know, like and you know,
try and come up with new material. But also my thing,
and you probably have this too, is I have no
idea who I'm going to be interviewing when I walk
off the ice at the end of the game, I
(59:49):
have no clue, so I have to have like I
just grab whoever. Yeah, and sometimes I'm like, oh, I'm
not ready to talk to a defenseman. I was totally
prepared to talk to a forward post game, and then
I have to like scramble. So but Josh never made
me feel like, you know, like there were definitely times
where I'm like, oh my god, this is the stupidest
(01:00:09):
question in the world. And he never, you know, was
there were times when he was like, no, you're good,
You're good, you did a good job.
Speaker 2 (01:00:16):
So that's how it always is. Yeah, everyone loved your
postgame interviews throughout the season, Kim, So we're definitely uh
doing that for for the next season. But it's the
top of the hour. Now you have to go get
your son from school. So I'm gonna let you choose.
Do we want to send this out with likes to
Tucson or Roadrunners Rock.
Speaker 3 (01:00:36):
Gotta see the Lights two songs.
Speaker 2 (01:00:39):
There is maybe you singing it right there. Well, we'll
see you next week. Folks. It's gonna be Kim and
Aga most likely, and we will try to get another
player for you. We'll see you next week.
Speaker 4 (01:00:48):
I have a good vacation, Johnny, Gotta see the lights

Speaker 1 (01:01:00):
