(00:23):
got some great stuff. Can't waitto get to it. Kim Coderroblas,
I'm Adrian Denny. Kim's back homeand Tucsons. She's getting ready to head
out on her fourth of July tripon her fourth of July weekend. Even
though it's Monday when we're recording this. I'm up here in the mountains at
Prospect and Development Camp. We justhad the NHL Draft this weekend, and
(00:45):
now we've got Roadrunners coaches running Prospectand Development Camp with some roadrunners from twenty
three twenty four, with tons offuture Roadrunners. We'll break it all down
coming up. We're really excited forit. Special guest The Lore coming up
(01:06):
here this week on the podcast andwe'll carry it into next week. But
Kim, good to see you.Ready to talk, Ready to talk some
hockey in July. Always always readyto talk. Hockey. Yep. So
yesterday morning, I arrive at Prospectand Development Camp, walk into the hotel.
(01:32):
First person I see in the lobby. This is an easy guess.
Easy guess John Ferguson. No,not John. I did see John,
but not the first person that yousaw. Not the first person that I
saw. Was it somebody who knowsyou? He was on the podcast last
week? Oh? Steve, Steve, he was gonna be my second guest.
(01:53):
Okay, walked in. It's justlike stuff just always kind of happens
with us, right, walk in, first person, I see Steve Potvin,
big hug, like we haven't seeneach other in mincs. It was
just last week. So Sam Lipkenabout a half hour later, walked into
(02:15):
the hotel and I was the firstperson that he saw, saw Anson Thornton.
So just kind of a who's whoof the young prospects getting ready for
a week of development camp. It'sgonna be led by roadan Or coaches and
(02:36):
the draft picks. I'll be there. Eleven players in the organization were drafted
in Vegas and they're all gonna beat Prospect and Development Camp. Kim,
do you remember when we had AkuRatu on Happy hour in April, and
we asked him about being drafted andhow the next day you're being whisked off
(03:02):
the prospect and development can't so yourdraft. Tell me about the experience,
right, because where were you? Were you over here? Were you at
home? And uh, tell mewhat it was like? Yes, so
I was. Uh, I wasin my my mother's mother's place in close
(03:28):
to Helsinki, Finland. I was. I was in sleep. We were
going to London the next day fora family trip and I did not I
did not know if I was goingto get drafted. And we had a
flight like six in the morning.Next day was probably eleven thirty. It's
like, I gotta get some sleep. And then I was able to sleep
probably thirty minutes, and then mydad said you got drafted to Then then
(03:53):
a lot of coyotes guys called aboutflights and everything. A couple of the
teams didn't have the dev comps right, Yeah, and we we already booked
the trip probably three months earlier.Yeah, so we we went there.
I just flew London with my parentsand then I flew there too Phoenix.
(04:13):
So that worked out. So yougot to spend a couple of days in
London. No, not at all. You had to fly and we jump
on another plane for probably Yeah,I mean, yeah, I was by
being in London one once before,so obviously kind of stated by yeah that
was it was a pretty good that'sa good reason. Yeah, that's a
good reason to go to a teamteam camp. So Aku was not on
(04:38):
site. Kim I asked how manyof the guys drafted were on site in
Vegas out of the eleven because they'reall eleven going to be at Prospect and
Development camp this week. Any anyguesses how many of the guys were in
Vegas because they're all eleven going tobe at Prospect and ah my camp,
(05:00):
Oh my goodness. And I wondertoo, like was Aku somebody to come
the furthest that's a ten hour flightto make. I don't know, I'm
gonna say nine nine seven, okay, because I'm watching the draft and it
seems like they're all there. Isee you see them come up. But
but seven of the eleven and they'llall be there, so we see,
(05:24):
we'll see if we get any storiesof that. But the guys bring their
hockey year to the draft because they'regoing straight on a flight because development camp
starts the the next day. Ihad no idea. I didn't realize that.
But also, this draft was sounique in such a special experience because
it was at the Sphere. Itwas the first draft to ever be at
(05:44):
the Sphere, and it looked absolutelyamazing. Yeah cool, Yeah, I've
seen other on social media. I'veseen other sports industries talking about how that
was like the first time that theysaw the sphere kind of used in a
sports way where it did everything thatit needed to do. Like this Sphere
was just you know, it broughtabsolutely all the showmanship of the industry to
(06:11):
the event. So that's the drafttoday. As we record this, it's
July first, it's free agency.M h. I've got some got some
names for you, Kim. Okay, I'm ready. Let's go. We
can we can do names. Uh, let's of guys. The Roadrunners have
signed. We haven't announced it yet, but I've got some stuff we can
(06:34):
give you breaking news first here onthe podcast. Do you want to do
it? I'm not going to sayno. I need the names. I
need to know. Okay, let'sdo it. I've got the list.
I've got the list, and thenKim, we'll go back and see who
we signed last year during this week, new guys coming to the organization,
(06:55):
and see the impact that that thathad. Okay, all right, so
let's start with the HL contracts.Okay, Cameron Hebig Mister Downtown, Big
one, Huge One back for seasonnumber five. So many fans are going
to be so happy to see Heavesagain. Hunter Drew, Uh huh,
he's back for season He's back forseason number two. Yeah, so many.
(07:18):
I think. I think Hunter Drewis a big fan. He's a
fan favorite. He gets the crowdgoing. Austin Pagansky with a twist,
Austin Pganski to your contract. Nice, that's awesome. And then Will Gavin
(07:38):
is a guy that joined us ona tryout last year late in the season
after college at that Air Force Academy. And again not sure if it's going
to be today or next week.Kim is getting ready to leave at the
fourth of July. So her andI are doing the first part and I'm
gonna go into the rink and andtalk to people. Just grab, just
grab people, because that's what wedo here on the podcast. And Will
(08:03):
Gavitt, who was with us didnot play, but it was with us
for a couple of weeks. Hewas on that trip with us that that
you were on, Kim Jose,Yeah, Jose, So he did.
He did. People in Tucson getto see him. Was he here at
all? He was? He wasdid not play, but signed to an
AHL contract. Thirty six points inthirty eight games last year for the Air
(08:26):
Force Academy, UH, their leadingscore by forwards, one point off of
the team lead. So those theguys that will announce coming up in just
a little bit. Remember, we'vealready signed Lighton Moore, already signed Peter
de Blatory. We got those guysgood to go. Sam Lipkin, we're
going to talk to a development campon a three year deal entry level.
(08:48):
So we've got got lots of uh, lots of prospects. And then Kim,
that's just what we've got. Uh. We'll see what happens after we're
done recording the post. In termsof guys on two way contracts last year,
new guys joining the organization on twoway contracts. You remember Mavlalta.
(09:11):
I do remember Matt You remember JohnLeonard, I do Montana Ony Bucci.
Of course he's still got a yearleft on his two year contract. Yeah,
so justin Kirkland, remember Justinse. So all sorts of all sorts of
(09:33):
guys that we had that that weresigned and put on two way contracts and
ultimately ended up with the road Runner. So we'll see what we get coming
up this week. Two way contractshave already been announced. Kim okay,
Falalta the two year two way PatrickKotch, so happy Patrick and Bladder coming
(09:56):
back. Lad's on a two yearcontract. The first year of it is
a two way contract. The secondyear of it is an NHL one way
contract. Okay, So those arethe details there. And Ben McCartney,
just the youngest youngest alternate captain inleague history we believe, is back for
what is going to be his fifthseason when you include what he finished up
(10:22):
with in what was it four gamesin UH twenty twenty one season when when
we signed him and had five points. So Ben McCartney, I learned something
about Ben McCartney the other day,Kim Okay. He was, I feel
like I feel like I could learnsomething new about Ben McCartney every day because
(10:43):
he's in mystery. Go ahead this. I had no idea. I don't
know how we missed this and itis it's pretty deep. He is the
fifth fastest seventh round draft pick tomake his NHL debut in hockey history.
Really yes, November twenty twenty one. Drafted in September twenty twenty, so
(11:07):
with the draft being a little laterin twenty twenty might have helped him out
a little bit. The fifth fastestseventh round draft pick to make his NHL
debut and signed to a two wayI'm not surprised. And that's a one
year two way, Yes, yearit is, yep, and then we'll
see what else we got to comingdown the pipe. You can check my
(11:28):
two way track or Kim, I'vegot it. I know you've got it.
Yes, usan roadrunners dot com. It's updated every time somebody signs.
We'll have him on there. Don'thave Michael kessel ring on there. I
have to double check this. Hesigned to a two year contract last week
by the Coyoties. Pretty sure it'sall one way, So NHL one way
for for Mike, I believe iswhat it what it is all confirm that,
(11:50):
but I'm I'm pretty sure. Okay, how about that. There's your
your draft, exciting week, yourfree age. Yeah, we're rolling very
exciting. You got any questions forany of our guys when I go inside
anything you want me to ask?I mean, like, are they even
(12:11):
able to see straight? Has anyhave any of them slept at all?
You know, like what are theyfeeling? It's got to be How about
how about our general manager John Ferguson. Did you see him at the table
at the NHL draft? He wasright there sitting at the table I did
with all the important people. Iloved. I loved that, Like I
said, I love that setup. That was so so much fun to see
(12:35):
everybody. Yeah, so yes,I did. So see if we can
track down John Ferguson again. Busy, busy time, but maybe in the
next couple of weeks we can graba road winner general manager and get him
here. On the podcast Fingers CrossedKim our podcast last week with Steve Potman,
(12:56):
It's gonna be the most listened topodcast we've ever done, like ever,
really anything about that stand out thatwe could replicate and do this do
over again? That like, becauseit was very successful? Was it Steve?
He had to be Steve? Right? It with Steve definitely, which
(13:16):
I'm which I'm thinking, I'm deadserious. I want to get his wife
Nada on the podcast. Oh yeah, I would love to talk to her.
Yeah, she sounds amazing. I'venever seen I've never even seen Nada
or the kids. We've talked aboutthem so much though I've met. Oh,
I don't think I've ever met Steve'sdaughter. Okay, I met his
(13:37):
two sons, I met Nada.I don't think I've ever met his daughter.
Oh okay. I would love toget I mean, if possible,
I'd love to get the whole family, because there's such a hockey family,
right yeah, yeah, yeah,I would love to talk to all of
them. And it's so I loveour well. The podcast was funny to
me last last week because he justkept saying, I'm so borried. You
(14:00):
need to talk to Nada. I'mso boring, and I'm like, but
he's but he's not, you know, like he's got great things to say,
and and then it turns into themost listened to podcasts we've ever done
before. Right yeah, I don't, I don't know. It's uh summertime,
you know, like people are areitching for news. That's the thing.
(14:20):
That's the thing. I learned ittwenty years ago in sports radio.
Nobody listens to sports radio in thesummer, and our podcasts have in season
in summer. This summer, it'snot this summer. Podcast downloads have gone
up versus the regular season. It'sbeen a it's been a tumultuous I don't
(14:43):
summer. We don't. We don'ttalk about that. We don't talk about
the noise. I know, Iknow. That's yeah, that's get right.
Yeah, I don't know. That'sso interesting. It's a great time
to be part of the two Sunroad Runners Insider podcast speaking avoids, Kim,
I feel bad about this, feelterrible. I kind of miss Johnny
(15:07):
Johnny who No, I'm just kidding, kind of miss Johnny. Oh.
Jonathan Shaeffer, Yeah, he'll beback. He's uh, he's traveling right
now. Right He's on a vacation. He's on a whirlwind tour on California.
He's on vacation. M hm,you're going on vacation. I am,
(15:28):
but I'm not your right hand man, Jonathan Schaefer. No, you're
not. You're uh, you're KimCoderoblis send us a ten invoices. What
you are? You're you're always aroundthe summer when we need help. YEP,
I try to be you're going onYou're going on a trip. Where
are you going. I'm just gonnaWe're just gonna go to southern California and
(15:50):
sit on the beach for a week. That is, there's no itinerary.
I got books. I got bookson books on books that I'm going to
read. We've got a little airbnbin the Pacific Beach. Yeah. Yeah,
good for you yourself. No,just me and my daughter, just
(16:14):
the two of you, just thetwo of us. It's going to be
so chill. I am. SoI'm not bringing my work laptop, like
I said, I'm just bringing books. The only thing we have planned is
a dinner on one night with somefriends because we lived in San Diego for
a while. So yeah, sogoing back to San Diego is kind of
like going homeish a little bit. It's not like going back to DC,
(16:37):
Like that's really like going home andthen coming back here. It's really home.
But yeah, a little bit ofa footprint in San Diego. Well,
enjoy yourself. Thanks, I'll beup. I'll be up working away
at Prospect and Development Camp. Yeah. But you've got you've got some nice
weather up there. Yeah, yeah, it's nice. Yeah, it's uh
(16:57):
it too. Some weather right nowis fun to me because you never know
what you're gonna get when you walkout the door. I'll tell you this.
On Friday, man, that monsoonwe got Friday afternoon, it felt
so nice, the way it cooledeverything down. Yes, I love it.
Yeah, absolutely fantastic. And Iwas actually it just started to get
(17:18):
so dark. I love those darkdays when you can just feel the storm
rolling in and the pressure outside isdifferent than the pressure inside your house,
so the house kind of starts tocreak a little bit. Like that's to
me, that's the sights and soundsof monsoon. And then you can smell
the kreos out. Wow. Man, it is absolutely fantastic. There's no
good time to get your car washedright now. So yeah, I got
(17:42):
a windshield replaced Thursday because I wasdriving around Phoenix Kim and a big old
rock just my windshield on Memorial Dayand I had to reschedule three or four
times. And the guy comes andputs it a new windshield because the girl
(18:02):
that came to fix the chips, she's like, I can't get it.
I can't get it. I'm sosorry, I can't get it. Oh,
interesting. So they had to comethrough in a new windshield and whoa,
the fella Nicholas from Safe Light comesin, puts in the new windshield
and says, yeah, just don'twash it for the next twenty four hours.
And I wanted to say, whendo you think was the last time
(18:22):
that car actually got washed? Nicholas? When was the last time? Do
you want me to tell you?I'm scared now because I wash my car
every week? Do you yeah, what do you do April of twenty nineteen?
No, you're joking. Wait,First of all, how do you
(18:47):
know how do you remember that farback of April twenty nineteen? You haven't
washed your car in five years? No? I haven't, Adrian, Why
why? I just don't have timefor that. Oh my gosh. We
need to get you a mister sticker. It literally takes three minutes to go
through the wash all by yourself withthe sticker on the car. I know,
I know, that's so funny tome. I'm I'm I am obsessive
(19:11):
about my car being clean. Infact, later today, because we're gonna
drive up to Phoenix and I wantthe interior clean, I'll be going to
the car wash today for sure.Even though I know it's gonna get dirty
on the road and it will probablyrain, none of that matters. It
needs to be clean for the drive. So that's yeah. I don't,
I don't. I don't speak thelanguage that you're speaking where you don't get
your car washed. I just,I just I just was flattered that he
(19:34):
told me I didn't need to gowash my car for the next twenty four
hours. That is really funny.Yeah, I can't nothing. It's just
so when it rains, that's kindof when it gets washed, like that's
the only Yeah, wow, that'samazing. Huh we I mean, we
live in the dirty Tea, Adrian. They don't call it this dirty tea
(19:56):
for nothing, Like there's dirt everywhere. Like, how do you do you
not have a drinky car? Idon't know. Probably I think it is.
I think it is. But we'llhave a good trip. We're not
gonna let you off the hook thateasy, though. Okay, let's draft
Fourth of July foods. I'm goingto be fourth of July on the beach,
(20:21):
so yeah, so I don't knowhow many of these foods I'm going
to get, but I am readyto go. I'm always ready with fourth
of July. Okay, go ahead. Well number one is the hot dog,
absolute number one, and it's mustard. It can't be it can't be
bald. It has to have mustard. Ketchup and onions, so many onions,
crunchy, crunchy onions. Since numberone, Since I do my hot
(20:45):
dog a different way, can Itake a hot dog? Let's go?
This is what all happened to myhot dog? And you're just you're gonna
walk right off the set. Thisis what I want with my hot dog.
I want a hot dog with mayonnaiseand cheese. Wait, like,
(21:06):
what what kind of cheese are wetalking about? Like shredded cheese or not
cheese like you put on the burger, like like one of those squares that
melts onto the burger. Yeah, yeah, Adrian, that's the craziest thing
I've heard so far today. Areyou serious? See? That's why I
got to take a hot dog?Is it? Is it melting on the
(21:32):
grill with the hot dog or doyou put it on after you pull the
hot dog off the grill? No, I take the hot dog off and
slaps a piece of cheese and themayonnaise on it. No, that makes
it even worse in my opinion,I need to I need to know what
people think about this. I can'tbe the only one who's like, I
love that problem. I might.I might have a hot dog like that
once a year, once a year, and so that's how I do it.
(21:53):
Yeah, your cheat, your cheathot dog for the year. Sure,
I think I feel like I needto try it at least once to
see what it tastes like. ButI already know I'm not gonna like it.
So interesting. Yeah, okay,so that's your number one. That's
my number one. Okay, what'syour number two? My number two?
How about some baked beans? Oohokay, yeah, I got you there.
(22:17):
That's not on my list. Yeah, but but yeah, I understand.
My number two is potato salad. But yeah, my family has a
recipe for potato salad that is Chef'skiss. It's so it's so so good.
It's potato salad kind of mixed withegg salad. So there's eggs.
(22:37):
There's hard boiled eggs in there too. It's so good. I'll take chips
and garlic dip like like it's likea cream cheese kind of dip with like
garlic in it. You grind garlic, you grind fresh garlic in it.
Oh, fresh garlic, not oneof those little packets that you get.
I won't. Got to be freshgarlic and some wavy lays, some ruffles,
(23:03):
something like that with the chips.I got you the lays, the
lays chips for yes, for dips, yep at all times? Yes,
yeah, okay, I got youthere. So my number three is actually
watermelon or a fruit salad, afresh fruit salad or just like chunks of
watermelon. I love that. Onfourth of July. That sounds awesome.
(23:29):
My number four deviled eggs, anybody, Oh that was well. I had
hard boil eggs and my potato salad. So I didn't do double things,
but I love you. Do youmake double eggs? No? I don't,
but I have a family. Ihave family that makes doubled eggs.
Ye. Yeah, you're big fan. Yeah, I gotcha. Same thing
with the car washing, Kim.Don't do a lot of cooking. I
(23:52):
don't know if deviled eggs is reallycooking as much as it's just boiling an
egg for twenty seconds and then stirin some things around. I don't do
that, okay. Yeah, Andalso like I want to say, yeah,
none of this is stuff that Imake. Like this is I would
take the raw materials to my brother'shouse and him and his wife would would
(24:15):
do everything. So my number four, number one for me is always going
to be a hot dog. Butmy number four is a hamburger, a
cheeseburger. Yeah, fresh aft togrill. I'm going to take sugar cookies
with lots of frosting, like apatriotic sugar cookie, but like some some
really thick fresh frosting. That soundsgood. Wait, what flavor is the
(24:41):
frosting? Does it have a flavorlike chocolate, vanilla or pink? Okay,
okay, I gotcha. I didn'teven pick a I didn't even pick
a sweet. All of mine issavory because my number five is corn on
the cop Oh, that's a goodone. That's a good one. Yeah,
corn on the cop especially like theway that they may have you ever
had before with mayonnaise, melted butter, cheese, cheese. I'll have to
(25:10):
get you. It's so good alongthe same lines. Do you know what
I almost drafted and I've never hadit on Fourth of July, but I
was just kind of hungry street corn. Yeah, that's it. Yes,
Yeah, that's it we need toget. That's what I take for an
(25:33):
honorable mention. I've never had thison the fourth of July outside of a
car dealership where I was doing aradio remote ad or something. But apple
pie. They say fourth of Julyand apple pie sounds sounds good. I've
never had it on fourth of July. I never turned it down. Yeah,
neither have I. That's interesting.I don't have a lot of sweets.
I think on Fourth of July. It's mainly all the savory food.
(25:56):
I get really full. Like everyother day of the year, four hundred
days of the year, I ameating all the sweets that I can get,
But I don't have like a Fourthof July sweet that I turned to.
But yeah, maybe like apple piewith some vanilla ice cream. Oh,
you know me and ice cream Kim. Have we drafted ice cream flavors
yet? No? Oh my gosh, I'm ready for that. I could
(26:18):
do that at any moment. Soour guests that we have this week,
that they're going to join us thisweek next week, the folks we tagged
down at a dev camp. Ourcoaches Sam Lipkin, woll Avin, John
Ferguson, I'm gonna give him.I'm gonna give them topics. I'm gonna
say, all right, do youwant to draft dipping sauces, ice cream
(26:40):
flavors, kine slash, cuts ofmeat, arena concessions items, breakfast foods.
They let them pick one. Okay, that sounds good. That's a
lot. So I'm gonna let himpick one and then we'll draft it.
Okay, And with John Slaney,he doesn't get a pick because we're gonna
do cheesecake factory stuff because that's ourplace stuff. You get it. How
(27:00):
can you just make a top fiveout of the nine thousand items that are
on that menu? Can't wait foryou to hear it. I feel like
you need to even split it up, like we need to be sweet and
savor. John have favorites, You'relike, your go to a cheesecake factory.
Yeah, wait, but see likebecause they have so many options for
(27:22):
cheesecake. Yep, oh gosh,I know. So that's that's to me,
that could be a category all onits own. Draft cheesecake from the
cheesecake factory. I'll ask John ifyou wants to do that too. I
think you need to kind of haveour favorites that we go back to.
I'm so curious what those are.Yeah, I'm getting John. He's always
very busy with the family stuff, and yeah, hockey and hockey and hockey.
(27:49):
Order to get him though a deathcamp, we need to do a
candy draft. If we haven't doneit already, I'll put it on the
list. I'll put it on thelist because I haven't a favorite candy that
I just discovered, but I foundout it's been around for a while and
I just didn't know about it,and now I can't stop eating it.
Do you want to save it forthe draft? I can save it for
sure. Okay, speaking of food, final thing for me and you,
(28:15):
I think is your visitor from dinneron Saturday Night? Yes, so two
someone soons bring out, bring outall kinds of things right to some month
since I went to JoJo's Restaurant.Have you ever been to JoJo's. It
used to be in a Coosina Nooh, Elver and I would say,
(28:37):
like the North Downtown area. It'sover by the Museum of Art. If
you're listening and you have not goneto JoJo's, it's just got the best
vibe because there's not a lot ofindoor seating. There is some indoor seating,
but it's mainly it's a It takesup an entire Tucson city block,
and it's surrounded on four sides byartisan shops and like a record store.
(29:02):
And there's a little bar. Buton the inside in the interior courtyard,
that's where you sit and eat dinner. And there's all these beautiful trees and
these string lights, and they havelive music, great drinks, great food.
But also when you eat outside inthe summertime, that comes with all
of the summertime. Sure bugs thatyou might expect to see. Adrian,
(29:25):
have you ever seen a palaverti beetle? I don't think so. Do you
know what Thursday night, Friday night, something goes crawling along the tile in
the living room? Uh huh mighthave been. Go on, I'm gonna
I'm actually gonna text you a pictureof a palaverti beetle. Anybody who's from
Tucson has seen palaverty beetles everywhere andwhen you grow up, because I grew
(29:49):
up way out on the west side, in the middle of the desert,
there was nothing. Palaverty beetles arevery scary looking but incredibly innocuous. When
you grow up with scorpions and snakesand tarantulas and wolf spiders in the house
constantly, a Palaverti beetle is nota big big deal. But these guys,
(30:10):
yeah, I mean like this size, Adrian, like this size,
they can be like the size ofthe palm of my hand. Because we're
outside, there was a Palaverti beetleand it was hysterical to watch he came
out. I don't even know wherehe came from, but he was right
by my feet at one point. And it doesn't bother me, but you
could tell exactly on the patio wherehe was by people shrieking and reacting and
(30:37):
pulling their feet straight up off ofthe ground as they're eating dinner, because
they would just catch a flash ofsomething, you know, big and black
and crawling on the ground, andyou could tell where he was in the
seating area by the reaction of people. It was hysterical. And then there
was two of them, and Ithought everybody that saw both of them together
was collectively going to have a heartattack. It was just very, very
(31:02):
very entertaining dinner, but not expectedin any way. That is awesome.
I wish I could have been there. Very Tucson, a very Tucson experience
as far as I'm concerned. What'dyou get for dinner? What did I
get? Nacho Nacho's with vida?It was they were very very good.
Oh but that does, But thatdoes brav us, which are basically like
(31:25):
nachos with potatoes, so melty cheeseand salsa. Adrian will have to take
you there. I can't wait.I'd love to go. It sounds amazing.
Yeah, definitely. Hey, I'vegot one more thing for you,
Kim. Okay, it's fourth ofJuly weekend. Everybody's getting out of town.
I'm a prospect and Development camp.So I pull into the airport Saturday
(31:51):
night, okay, in Mesa.In Mesa, Oh okay, Oh,
haven't been there. That's a nice, nice, little cute airport. Yeah.
So I'm flying out of Mesa andI'm gonna be gone for over two
weeks I Prospects and Development Camp, and then I'm taking a week of vacation.
And so it's gonna be the fifteenthof July before I'm back in Arizona.
(32:12):
Okay. And I did something thatI've never done before when parking the
car, and I think I wasprobably dumb. It's gonna cost me an
extra two dollars a day, okay, but batteries in Arizona just get shot
because of the heat, right, car batteries Okay, And I thought,
(32:35):
I'm not driving this car for overtwo weeks, it's gonna be over one
hundred and ten batteries only a yearand a half old. But I'm parking.
I'm parking and covered parking, soit's just not really taking a beating.
So do you think I wasted thirtydollars extra parking or do you think
(33:00):
this is a big deal that I'mgoing to come back and my battery's gonna
work because they took this extra precaution. I think you're gonna be fine when
you get back. And it's funnyto me because I do covered parking every
time I leave town. I markin the Tucson garage, you know that
garage off to where the rental carsare on the side, because yeah,
(33:22):
both you heard how I was withtaking care of my car just on the
day to day, like week toweek. So yes, she normally gets
she normally gets the princess treatment inthe garage. So to me, it
is worth the extra expense of makingsure that you're getting back to tippy top
shaped car. Yes, made agood choice. I just thought over two
(33:45):
weeks not driving it getting beaten byone hundred and fifteen degree temperatures, I
don't know. No, you didthe right thing, Okay, one hundred
percent. I'm on your side.I needed that because the extra thirty bucks
maybe thirty two bucks depending on howthe stuff's calculated there. But I think
(34:07):
you'll think that it's worth it.I really do. Yeah, yeah,
you're always so supportive. Well, yeah, of course this was I think
it was a smart decision. Andthen you won't oh my gosh, it's
yeah, it's not going to beso stifling, ridiculously hot in your car.
You're not going to burn yourself onanything. I think this was a
(34:29):
smart bove. All right, Kim, I appreciate it. Thank you for
making me feel better. Yeah,of course, thank you. I'll send
my twenty five dollars co payment themail. It's therapy. Let's get you
out of town. I'm going togo into Prospects and development camp talk to
the guys, and you have agreat fourth of July. You too,
(34:52):
Adrian. Thanks, thank you wegot him, Sam Lipkin joining us here
at Development Camp. Sam, howare you welcome back? Yeah, thanks
for having me. It's it's along time coming, but I'm excited to
get out to Utah finally see everything. So it's been great. Third development
camp, fourth fourth development camp withthe organization twenty twenty one, twenty two,
(35:15):
twenty twenty three. I guess,I guess that would be it.
I can't. I can't believe thisis number four. Yeah. I started
off at the old Rank in Glendale, worked my way out to the Ice
Den, and now we're in SaltLake City, Utah. So no complaints.
Can you tell over the course oftime the kind of players, the
styles, the personalities that the organizationis aiming to bring in? Can you
(35:38):
see kind of a kind of amold. Yeah, obviously four years is
a long time. I've seen alot of players come in and out and
kind of kind of being that rookiemy first year than kind of the supervet
my fourth year. So yeah,no, air Utah and Arizona before.
They've kind of had a great planwith Bill Armstrong kind of again big fast,
(36:00):
like I'm six too, and I'mone of the smallest guys at the
camp. So yeah, just likea common theme with big, size,
great guys. I feel like eachyear I kind of just grab more relationships
with new guys coming in. Soit's been great and just a lot of
great people around here. You know, you came in last year three weeks
left in the season, but youweren't the new guy because we knew you
(36:21):
ye from the development camps, fromthe rookie camps. Our coaches knew yea.
Even Zach in his second year, ready to ready to go straight.
It's great to work hit the groundrounde. I think that's like one of
the great things about their development camp. I think they do a great job
just you kind of just get toknow the coaches at people and all the
skilled development guys and a player personnelguys that you don't really see too much
(36:44):
during the year. You kind ofreally get to interact with them. And
obviously it made my transition to Tucsonvery seamless with the coaching staff and having
done their practices, their drills, kind of see what they like before even
stepping foot in Tucson. So yeah, no, it's been great and these
development camp has been great and I'mjust super pumped to get out of here
(37:04):
again. So great to see you. Was Was I the first person you
saw? You? You were thefirst one. I told Kim that because
like I think, I think Iwas the first rim Sam saw, and
he walked into the hotel. Youwere the first one. So because the
first person I saw when I walkedinto the hotel Steve Potman. Yeah,
chance downtown, walk into a hugehotels right in. That's awesome. This
(37:27):
morning walking into development camp at therink, I walk in and I don't
know if I don't look like Ibelong to an ice rink, but I
walk in. I'm starting to getthe look around by the security guys.
I see Steve Pott but I walkedright up the sugar his hand pre passed.
Yeah. Yeah, it's funny howthat works out. Let's do road
winners wrapped the fire ye. Thenwe'll talk again, and then you and
I are going to do a draft. So ah, one sentence, one
(37:52):
word, whatever comes to your mindwhen I just run down this list here
that I that I came up with. You usually have a co Yeah,
I'm not sure where Johnny is.I can haven't set it out for the
fourth of July. So just meand you. So you're like the co
host today. Yeah, we're handlingit. You're doing good. Yeah,
thank you, appreciate it all Right, here we go, fourth of July.
America hot Dogs are Hamburgers hot Dogs. College hockey the best first off
(38:17):
season as a pro. The lifebeing west of the Mississippi. Nothing better.
HL Hockey, The Jungle Roadrunners coaches. Awesome hockey in the desert.
It deserves to be there playing hockeyon July first. Nothing better. Lafayette
Hill, Pennsylvania hometown. Baby loveit. Quinnipiac University the best D one
(38:39):
program in all of sports. SanDiego, first time in California, great
spot pro debut, one of thebest moments in my life. White Out
Tucson also great experience. Love theTucson fans. Favorite off season activity golf,
favorite vacation spot Italy. Favorite nonhockey sports team, the Philadelphia seventy
(39:00):
six ers. Favorite sports to playhockey. I have any other sports?
I probably wrote that down wrong inmy day to being rattled hosting this by
myself. Any other sports you play, No, it's just one hockey,
golf, Yeah, I played it, played roller hockey growing up at that
counts. But yeah, I know, yeah, I always love that.
But I've been taking up golf. It's been a majority of my summer the
(39:21):
past two summers. Is that what'sgoing on? I was gonna ask,
what do you do for fun?We all know work, We're all twenty
four to seven, we all donothing but work. What do you do
have fun? Yeah? I think, uh, just being with my best
friends. I think not seeing themfor a long period of time. I
come home from long day at therink early morning. I'm really just relaxing.
(39:44):
I'm a big xbox guy. Tryto get outside a little bit more,
going just a bunch of walks withmy dog. She's great, so
she makes that exciting. But youknow, it's it's pretty much as golf.
I've probably four or five times aweek. I've been doing the Twilight
Golf go out like six thirty bymyself, kind of just walk nine or
eighteen by myself. It's very peaceful. It's yeah, we un fortunate enough
(40:07):
to We just joined North Hills CountryClub in Philadelphia, so we've been Me
and my dad had been using themembership well, so it's been great there
at the course. So I wasgonna say you flew in from Philly.
Yep, so Lafayette Hill suburb ofPhilly. Yeah, it's it's about twelve
miles away from the city, butit will take you forty five ten hour
(40:29):
Yeah, but yeah, no,it's a suburbs. But yeah, I've
been there since since I was born. So just go to a lot of
sporting events. Yeah, kid inthat fourplex with the ice rink and the
basketball and the football and the baseball. Yeah, so we were actually Philly's
season ticket holders growing up. Hadto stop just with the travel got too
(40:51):
much. But yeah, I know, I love going to Flyers games,
seventy six Ers games, Eagles games, like, there's nothing better than that
sports complex there. It's uh andit's Philly, you know, got passionate
fans and they really love their sportsteams. All right, Philly cheese steaks.
Do you like Philly cheese steaks?Do you have a favorite spot for
Philly cheese steaks? Probably, I'mpretty basic. Geno's or Pats those are
(41:14):
the two big ones. They're great. There's a spot by me though,
just outside called Chubby's. It's uh, right next to Dollsandro's, which is
also a pretty big, big namebut we like, we like the place
next to our chubby, So yeah, it's awesome. It's one of my
favorite foods to eat when I'm home, So sounds great. We love food.
We're gonna talk about food coming out. Just wait till we get to
(41:35):
our draft. Do you get apick like one of five topics I have
regarding love that that you can pick. So we just had the Anatol draft
in Vegas. Yep, and alreadyit's been three years. We just said,
since you got drafted. I rememberthe day exactly where it was.
It was a busy day in theorganization. A lot went on. It
started with Josh getting drafted, youknow, really well, and just did
(41:59):
not stop. We made some trades. Tell me about the day you were
drafted. Yeah, so he was, uh, honestly just really nerve wracking
the whole day. Obviously, Italked to Arizona a bunch, so,
uh, I kind of kind ofhad a thought in my mind if I
were to go, I was gonnago to them. But you know,
we were kind of just sitting there. Rounds five to six, come my
(42:22):
name wasn't called. Honestly stopped watchingat that point. Then, Yeah,
all of a sudden, I gota text from a close friend, David
Ludwig, obviously hockey at Bridge.Yeah, yes, he texted me welcome
to the desert. And I waskind of confused. Looked at the NHL
app because I was sitting up inmy room at this point, and yeah,
(42:44):
obviously, great moment. Everyone startedscreaming. I had a couple of
my best friends there, so theywere all fired up. But yeah,
I know, it was Uh,it was nerve wracking. I wasn't too
sure if I was gonna go ornot. Yeah, and then you turn
you turn off TV? What'd youdo? Yeah, I live. They
just turned off the TV, walkedupstairs, didn't say anything to anybody,
and then next thing, you know, the next round the trade pick.
(43:07):
So yeah, I'm just super fortunate. So did you know David before?
Yeah, I did, assistant.Yeah, so he used to be one
of my advisors when I was likethirteen, fourteen years old, so we've
had a long, long history. And yeah, obviously getting that text from
him was pretty special. So that'sawesome. That's awesome. And then the
(43:27):
other thing we've been talking about, you go from the draft straight to dev
camp, So tell me about whatit was like getting drafted and then all
of a sudden you're on the wayto the desert to blow the camp.
Yeah, I think it was great. I think like for me, that
was one of the first times Ireally got out west to the desert obviously,
And yeah, just being being thatyoung kid, kind of being that
(43:51):
flyer pick, kind of just lateround sneaky pick. I think it just
really motivated me into camp to kindof prove that I belong and I wasn't
just a pick to that that theyjust saw something. I wanted to prove
it to myself that I was goodenough to be a guy that's drafted and
be a valuable prospect to them.So yeah, I know that that camp
(44:12):
in Glendale was great being able tosee a bunch of those guys that I
was fortunate to play with last year, so it kind of came full circle.
But yeah, that obviously, goingfrom the draft straight to camp was
great and kind of just got meacclimated to the family and everything that goes
on with this organization. So youknow, there's there's seven rounds, right,
(44:34):
but the organizations got they know whothey want, right. They wanted
you, like, we've heard aboutyou, We knew like you want a
championship at Quinnipiac and then returned foranother year and then we signed you to
the three year entry level deal rightout of college. There was a lot
of excitement. The organization was wasreally proud, really excited to bring in.
(44:57):
What was that like and knowing, you know, staying in communication with
with the development staff, with ourmanagement, coming to the camps, knowing
that they're they're waiting for you.Yeah, like, I mean, obviously
that's a great feeling. I feellike just the player development staff got a
shout out at least Ampniak Nathaniel Brooks. Those are the two guys that kind
of took me under their wings, probably did video with them for the past
(45:22):
four years, probably every single weekof the season. Yeah, virtually zoom.
Yeah, I start off in Chicago, obviously zoom. They were able
to come see me then, Yeah, as I went to Quinnipiac, Nathaniel
kind of took over came saw meprobably four or five times each year.
So yeah, it's it's great andkind of just gives you that suppoor that
(45:44):
you're you're really working towards something biggerthan yourself. And yeah, obviously making
that jump from college to to prowas it was a decision that I was
gonna have to make eventually, anduh, you know, after that top
top loss of Boston College, kindof just had feeling that it was time
to go, and yeah, itwas. It was great, easy flying
(46:05):
communication with them and obviously got outto Tucson really quick, so it couldn't
have gone any better. You know, You've been on some really good teams,
right, not just the National Championshipa Quinnipiac, but the Clark Cup
with the Chicago Steel. Yep,it's fun to be on winning teams,
and you know, looking at thoseteams, I'm sure you can tell like
(46:27):
special players that fit together, thathad good coaches, and we feel a
lot of that in this organization. You came right into it in Tucson last
year. Yeah. I feel like, obviously like winning a championship at any
levels really hard. And I've beenable to go through the ringer of high
school state championship into the Clark Cupinto the National Championship. I think those
(46:50):
like three championships kind of molded meas a person and kind of just excites
you to want to be on awinning team and it kind of gives you
a retrospective of how selfless you reallyhave to be to contribute to team success.
And honestly, team success is whenthe personal success comes. So being
a part of those championship teams isawesome and allows me to grow and learn
(47:12):
even more from other people who wanthim been through those types of experiences too.
One of your teammates, that is, one of your teammates are in
the organization, Josh Stone. Youknow Josh, you go way back.
Tell me about it first time youmet him, and you know how how
you know it's been to be hisfriend. Yeah, I mean, like
Josh has been a great, greatfriend towards me. My first year in
(47:34):
Chicago, he really helped me out, took me under his wing personally,
and I was able to find alot of similarities in our games and just
be able to talk to somebody ofthat that caliber on a daily basis really
helped me as a person. Andthroughout the whole processes of each year of
development camp, we kind of justcontinued our relationship and it's been great.
(47:55):
And the whole process of me's signing, he was there, he was helping
me out. He's texting me makingsure I was okay and everything. So
yeah, he's been. He's beena great friend towards mine and obviously a
great teammate as well. He's uh, what he does on the ice is
pretty special and off the ice aswell. You can't give him enough credit.
So yeah, no, it's been. It's been great and it's kind
(48:15):
it's kind of fun to be apart of those winning teams and now try
to do something bigger. So becauseyou've done it before, you know what
it takes, right, It's it'shard, takes winning, it takes will
yep, takes one, takes perfection, takes details. Yeah, takes a
lot of things, and it takesa lot of luck to everything, a
lot of things to go right.Yep. So so you're from Philly,
(48:37):
played in the US, ow inChicago, Quinnipiac, Connecticut. You come
out here to the desert. Youknow, your your family, I'm sure
watched you every weekend. But whenyou came to the road runners saw a
lot of names on the ticket listtoo. They they they followed you out.
Yeah, yeah, I would say, Uh, they've been great travel
(48:58):
Uh supported me. I moved awaywhen I was junior in high school,
so I've been living living away forabout five six years now, so traveling
to Shock Chicago is about twelve hours, so that was a little tough.
But obviously like new place like Sandie my dad got to come out of
San Diego. I had family inCoachella Valley the last weekend of the year.
(49:21):
I probably had twenty family members,So it's kind of all of a
sudden, I got signed. Igot cousins here, cousins there. So
yeah, it's great to connect withfamily, and they've been great to me,
and obviously being out in Arizona kindof gives them a little little boost
to get out there and come seeme. You want to go visit?
Yeah, my family. Who wouldn'twant to my family? I think I
(49:43):
see it more in Arizona than whenwe all lived in the same spot.
Yeah. So yeah, they've they'vebeen great and I can't thank them enough
for everything they've done. How oldwere you when you started playing hockey?
How did that go? When you'vegot your little mini stick? Yeah?
Whatever, what got I was abouttwo years old. So my dad's originally
from Winnipeg, Manitoba, so Igot uh, got some Canadian blood in
(50:06):
me, you can say, so, Yeah, I'm a dual citizen there,
so that that's kind of his lovefor the game kind of got instilled
with me. And I remember justgoing to his men's league games on a
run around and be in the lockerroom and being the bench. Those were
the experiences that kind of pushed me. That kind of took me from roller
hockey to to ice hockey around fiveyears old. So I kind of just
(50:29):
been doing that and I really Ireally love it and obviously haven't wanted to
do anything since. It's awesome. It's it's fun, like just just being
being a part of the game. It's just it's priceless. And what would
do with that? Yeah? Yeah, do you play anything else at at
any point in time? T Ball, no basketball, nothing, my uh
(50:52):
street hockey. Yeah, my dadwanted me to play football for a couple
of years, but I gave theno go in that for middle school,
so it was literally just hockey, hockey, hockey, hockey. Brothers and
sisters. Two older sisters, Myoldest sister, Annie's twenty seven, then
my middle sister, who's also theMA, she's twenty four, so got
(51:14):
a couple of years in between eachother. But uh yeah, no,
they've been great too. They theyplayed a couple of sports growing up,
but the main focus was my hockey, so they they definitely made sacrifices to
make sure my parents were with meand doing what I needed to do.
So yeah, we have a greatrelationship and they're kind of moving on with
(51:34):
their lives and I'm moving on withmine. So it's been great. So
you get the month and a halfwith the Roadrunners, and I think what
we've seen over the years is whenwe get the guys coming out of college,
it's kind of like a development camp, right for pro Like you come,
you spend the month, month anda half, Yeah, you know,
get more acclimated to the system, playing some games, and then when
(51:57):
the season ends that we can evaluatethat and be like all right, going
into the summer coming back out, this is this is this is the next
step, and that that's really valuablethat just that month. Yeah, Arizona
had a great pan for me.They slotted me in right away. Yeah,
like you were saying, like Igot seven games, but I feel
(52:19):
like those seven games were almost anequivalent to half a year, if not
a full year, of the learningcurves that I learned and the information that
I was given. I think obviouslythere's a jump from college to to pro
and being able to get that almostlike a free year playing games with the
team lifestyle wise makes a transition easy, easy into the summer and kind of
(52:43):
allows you just have a blueprint atwhat you need to work on to get
to the next level because you've seenit. Do you want to do a
draft? Yeah? Food O pickpick one of these dipping sauces, ice
cream flavors, kind slash cuts ofmeat. Kim and I just drafted Fourth
Life foods. We can't do thatone arena concession items, breakfast candy,
(53:05):
kinds of cheesecake kinds, and cutsof meat. Okay, yeah, let's
do it. You go first,So I just picked toe, Yeah,
pick pick A. We're gonna golet me yeah. Yeah. So we're
gonna go five rounds. You're gonnapick, I'm gonna pick, You're gonna
pick, I'm gonna pick, you'regonna pick, I'm gonna pick. All
right, so we're starting off withthe kind slash cuts of meat tomawk tomahawk.
(53:30):
Okay, if I say a rabbidoes that, is that the same
thing? Okay, I'm gonna saya rabbi, New York Strip, New
York Strip. Okay, how aboutI'll say filet mignon. I like that,
Uh, kinds of cuts of meat. M could be anything. It's
(53:53):
not limited to like cow poultry. That like it's a cold cut meat.
Oh yeah, yeah, like salami. We could do that a spell it.
I'm just salami right here. Ilike that. That's fair. That
is it. It is a cutof meat. Yeah, yeah, that's
good. I'm gonna say an endcut of roast beef. Yeah. I
(54:15):
like that. Okay. Round numberfour it's a type of steak, like
the the Japanese kind of the wagoo. Yeah, yeah, a five wagu
We are going to get to thethe end the steaks here, all right.
How about I'll say, gonna comeup with five of these adrians,
(54:40):
Sam and I have picked seven.I'll just take a nice juicy burger.
I like that. I like that. Okay, Sam, here we go.
Round number five. Oh, flanksteak, flank steak, kick it
back steaks. That's good, andI'm going to take how about our big
(55:06):
old rib? Yeah yeah, allright, So there we go. Sam
chose Tomahawk, New York Strip,Pershutto Salomi Waguo steak, flank steak,
and I took ribbi filet mignon andcut a prime rib a nice juicy burger,
medium rare and ribs. As youcan tell, Steak's probably my favorite
(55:29):
food. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I love it. My nephew Jack
was some climbing wall last week andhe loved steak. And it was a
food truck day at this wherever. It is in the plaza with the climbing
wall and the town square bubble blah. So Nana is walking him around.
(55:50):
He can get any food truck hewants, and he had. They stopped
at the Japanese Steak food truck becauseit was the only place that had steak.
Wow, how about that for almosta seven year old. It's in
your blood, that's right there.Oh yeah, yeah, we'll take We'll
take some steak. Uh. What'syou have for dinner? Last night at
the death camp? What they serveyou guys? Uh? It was it
(56:14):
was just chicken and around. Yeah, pasta too good dessert, but couldn't
eat it. Let us have dessert. No, the ice cream looks so
good, but they wouldn't let useat it. Who called that? The
boys decision? The boy all right. Yeah, I don't know if that's
leadership. I don't know if anybodywants to be. That's what we talked
(56:36):
seeing slug and some vanilla ice cream. That's what we talked about. Good
job, good job like you guys. All right, Sam? Uh?
Any any big plans rest of thesummer after Death Camp. Uh, honestly,
not much. I'll be at theJersey Shore a little bit. Yeah,
city avalon, but uh, youknow already I took my trip this
(56:57):
summer. So awesome. Yeah, just kind of ramp up training, get
ready for Camp Brookie Camp, allthat good stuff. So cool, can't
