This fifth chapter of H.G. Well's science fiction masterpiece, The Heat-Ray is probably my favourite, or perhaps joint-favourite with the Thunderchild stuff that comes later. During this chapter I realised that some of Wells' most boringly named ones have the most banging Martian vs humans battle sequences in the story.

We're also introduced to the 'black smoke' cannisters, one of, for my money, science fiction's most inventive weapons.
