Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is a nice fun spin for me because I
love the arts. I grew up in a family of artists.
My first job was My first jobs were all focused
on my art background and my desire to create. I've
told you, many of you know that I have a
shop at home with a lot of fun things to do,

(00:21):
everything from sculpting to drawing to three D printing and
all kinds of stuff.

Speaker 2 (00:27):
So it's near and dear to my heart.

Speaker 1 (00:28):
So Terry Harden, who's a professional artist, reached out and
she is a judge on a program we'll tell you
about it. It's a television show if you haven't seen it,
called Outrageous Pumpkins, and she has her own DVD out
on how to carve pumpkins. And I thought, rather than
waiting till October, let's get it on because I know
this is something people can learn and understand and play

(00:52):
with prior.

Speaker 2 (00:53):
So welcome Terry to the program.

Speaker 3 (00:55):
What an honor it is to be here.

Speaker 1 (00:57):
How fun is that when you judge pumpkin carving? What
are the criteria for you for a good pumpkin carving?

Speaker 4 (01:08):
Well, for me, it's all about story and if I
can't it's a pumpkin.

Speaker 3 (01:13):
Well if I can't. You know, it's so funny.

Speaker 4 (01:16):
Whenever I speak about this, people go, it's just a gourd,
It's just a pumpkin. And I say, guys, there are
people out there who are professional pumpkin carvers. Wait for it,
that make over three hundred thousand in just two months.

Speaker 1 (01:34):
I also wasn't going to do this on the show today, Terry,
but I'm leaving the program to become a pumpkin carver.
Ceiling I thought today is a good idea pumpkin carving.
I here's the thing. You have to be bold to
be an artist to begin with. Yes, And I tease you,
and I tease Dean as well about the story because
your house has savage story. Right. House's story is that

(01:55):
I live in it. But I understand that from a
designer standpoint, you're looking at a pumpkin and it's got
to talk to you a little bit.

Speaker 2 (02:03):
Is where does that sound?

Speaker 1 (02:04):
It's shape, its size, the organic curves and indentations or
whatever have to lend itself to say, hey, yes, carved
me this way? Right?

Speaker 3 (02:15):
Yes?

Speaker 2 (02:16):
And so the story you talk about is.

Speaker 1 (02:18):
What what can you do with this pumpkin to bring
it to life, in its in its state, it its.

Speaker 4 (02:26):
Shape well on Outrageous Pumpkins, and those people who have
seen it know that we have the krem de la creme.
So we have several categories in several rounds, and the
people have the opportunity to win twenty five thousand dollars
as well as a belt like a weight belt that
says Outrageous Pumpkins Season blah blah, biggest maha.

Speaker 3 (02:48):
You know, they get to keep that to the next person,
not pass it down. You know.

Speaker 4 (02:52):
This year we're doing Outrageous Pumpkins All Stars and it's
fifty thousand dollars and we've brought the top pumpkin carvers,
so it's gotten that much more aggressive. And it's not
always one pumpkins. Sometimes you have to in about three
hours carve five pumpkins, or you have to an eight
hours create an entire scene. And then if you've seen

(03:16):
the show before, the finale involves a Atlantic Giant, which
can be over two thousand and three pounds.

Speaker 1 (03:23):
Yes, I have, and I'm a big fan of watching
these shows.

Speaker 2 (03:26):
They suck me in all the time.

Speaker 1 (03:27):
Now we're speaking with professional artist Terry Harden, who is
a judge on the hit TV competition series Outrageous Pumpkins.
And so when you're carving a pumpkin, do all these
pumpkins have to be lighted from the inside at the
end or some because that's a different experience too, because

(03:48):
you have to think of the thickness of the wall
as to what's going to be light and what's going
to show. It's reverse. Basically, you're carving a negative at
that point. So do you give credit or points for that?
Is that more difficult to do?

Speaker 2 (04:01):
Well?

Speaker 4 (04:02):
I'm I'm pretty well known for if you're coming in
your professional and you are, you know, you have gone
through a huge process to be on the show.

Speaker 3 (04:10):
Now you're on the show.

Speaker 4 (04:12):
So when the first category is jack oe lanterns, I
want you to know what that is and a jack
a lanern means lit from within. After that, you don't
have to light every you know, category that we have,
but that first one needs to be carved like a
jack lantern and it needs to be lit like a
jack of lantern.

Speaker 2 (04:30):
That's super cool.

Speaker 3 (04:31):
And one of the.

Speaker 4 (04:32):
Things that I have said in the past is if
you're in this competition, you don't want to put you know,
put all your cards on the table in round one,
you kind of want to hold a few back, so
do the jaqueline in con you know that level. Do
that level because that's what we've asked for. If you
want to make it a little better or more exciting

(04:52):
like they do, that's great. But remember you are competing
this year against thirteen other people. That's fourteen contest the
all of them have been on the show. All of
them are top top carvers, and you.

Speaker 1 (05:05):
Want a crescendo that you want something at the end
to say, Okay, this is my masterpiece.

Speaker 4 (05:11):
And Neil is a judge. Usually what I do in
the seasons I've been there since season one. Usually I
isolate myself because I want it to be about the
pumpkin work. If I start to know the contestants, then
I start to care about the contestants and it becomes
very difficult.

Speaker 3 (05:27):
So this season, I knew them all and.

Speaker 4 (05:30):
It was incredibly difficult to do judging and keep it
about the work because I love every single one of
these people. I've watched their trials, and I've watched their victories,
and I've watched their challenges. Sometimes you just have a
junkie day, you know, you've trained, you've figured it out,
and the day just.

Speaker 3 (05:49):
Doesn't go your direction.

Speaker 4 (05:51):
And it's really became painful for me because I knew
every single one of these people, so this year was
a real challenge.

Speaker 2 (05:59):
Yeah, that's interesting.

Speaker 1 (06:00):
You know a lot of the hosts here don't talk
to other people, so they don't care about them, so
they could do their job.

Speaker 2 (06:04):
John Kobel Bell handle you know that type of thing.

Speaker 1 (06:07):
But it is, Yeah, that is I've judged things myself, food, barbecue,
and like, really most of them are done blind, so
you don't have that access to somebody and you're judging,
but you've got to, you know, see that more connect
with them or you have in the past of their jobs.

(06:28):
But I love that progression from Jack o' landern to
the outrageous.

Speaker 3 (06:33):
Yeah to the big Maha.

Speaker 4 (06:34):
You know, the last one is a giant Atlantic Giant,
and then there's usually about six to ten other pumpkins
that must be incorporated with this monster, so they don't
just get to carve this big monster.

Speaker 1 (06:48):
And a bad day, like you were saying, could be
that you're dealing with something organic. You can't say, oh,
I've done a bunch of pumpkins. This one's going to
carve this way.

Speaker 2 (06:56):
You have no idea. It's organic. That is a one
of a kind thing that you're carving into.

Speaker 3 (07:01):
And it's a delightful food.

Speaker 4 (07:03):
This is a delightful food that people make pies and
cookies and everything from. And now you've got people who
are carving it. And there are times a carver will,
you know, get a beautiful pumpkin and they'll open it
up and it's spoiled inside, and they'll just be like
ah because you you now have lost time and you
have to go and get another pumpkin, because the criteria

(07:24):
might be six pumpkins or seven bumpkins or whatever it is.
So you never know, like you say, it's a it's
a food and it rots or it doesn't, or it
can be green, or it can have gone to gourd,
you know, and then you're carving it, going what.

Speaker 2 (07:39):
The heck is wrong with the pumpkin?

Speaker 1 (07:40):
Can you use that term? Can you say that pumpkin
is gordes?

Speaker 3 (07:44):
Yes? From they always do the funny stuff.

Speaker 1 (07:51):
You got the puns come out? Okay, stick around because
I still have more questions for you. Pumpkins Sculpting is
the name of the DVD with professional artist Terry Harden
and a local gal right here, local talented artist right here,
and she is a judge on the hit television competition
series Outrageous Pumpkins.

Speaker 2 (08:10):
And I thought, what a.

Speaker 1 (08:11):
Cool she reached out, and I said, what a cool thing,
because I love this stuff to have on the program,
a different look at food, especially during a time as
we come into fall. I'm taking a little bit of
a spin here. Terry Harden reached out. She's a professional
artist and she focuses on pumpkin sculpting, and it has

(08:32):
the artist spirit that to me, life is not worth
living without. It's something that I seek for myself and
the people around me. Not to be, you know, a
sell art or to be a professional artist unless that's
your calling, but to find your creative space for whatever
it may be. And she definitely has that spirit. She
is a judge on the hit television competition series Outrageous Pumpkins.

(08:55):
We're talking about carving pumpkins and with the with the
fall upon us, and obviously it's the time to start
carving and thinking about Halloween and the like. What are
some things to preserve your art? You take the time
to cut into a pumpkin and an organic living thing

(09:17):
that's been pulled from its life source, but it's still
got to retain its moisture. Are there tips and tricks
that you use to keep it as fresh as long
as you can?

Speaker 3 (09:26):
Well?

Speaker 4 (09:26):
Number one, if it's a small enough pumpkin, you can
put it in your refrigerator, So this is pretty good.
You wet paper towels and you lay them across it
so that the air that circulates in your refrigerator won't
dry out the flesh of the pumpkin. But I've kept
one two weeks by putting it in the refrigerator. I
also have done some giant, giant ones for shows like
when Desperate Housewives was around and True Blood. I did

(09:49):
once for that as well, And before I forget, I
would I would be remiss if I didn't say that
Season five starts September twenty ninth. That's a Sunday, so
to check it out. It's going to be amazing. You're
going to see the best of the best doing it.
And that's one way to do it. If you have
a big, big pumpkin, you can take We used to

(10:11):
do bleach before we had all these wonderful products that
are not debt, you know, bad for the environment. So
now you can use those products and just make sure
that you again soap, paper, towel, lay it over your pumpkin,
put it in a dark place, and keep it cool.
That is really the scary part is this weather that
we've had has called horrible for pumpkins, so we're there

(10:33):
praying and hoping that it will get cooler so everyone
doesn't have to struggle. Because Halloween is on a Thursday,
and I usually teach weekends because that's when everybody wants
to learn, and.

Speaker 1 (10:46):
How do they find out more about you? Your website,
all of these things to connect with you. I know
you have been sold out pretty early on with your pumpkin.

Speaker 4 (10:55):
From my life classes. This was phenomenal, first time I've
ever sold out so fast. So I'm deciding to add
a few virtual classes so that people can just in
the comfort of their area where they can they know
their area, they know their space. And then I also
have a tool set that I sell, but they're not
obligated to do it because I use many random sculpting

(11:17):
tools yes, which are.

Speaker 3 (11:18):
Like for ceramics.

Speaker 4 (11:19):
So you might have someone who does ceramics or someone
who actually uses these tools for whatever that I would
not recommend using their tools, but they might have a
couple extra that they'll let you carve with pumpkins, and
they're very popular. There's also you know, peelers and things
you can find in your kitchen that work really really well.
But yes, it's a really The thing that's really beautiful

(11:42):
about it is it helps you, if you don't believe
that you'll ever be an artist, realize that you are
completely wrong.

Speaker 1 (11:49):
I think a lot of people have them. You and
I were talking, you know, on the spiritual or the
faithful place. Is that I am a big believer that
being created in the image of God as being a creator.
You can always tell a dark person because they're into destruction.
They want to tear things down, they don't want to
build things up. So to me, somebody that wants to create,

(12:10):
no matter how small, to me, that is living the
path of purpose that we're designed for. And it can
be something incredibly artistic, or it can be you know,
being a mom or a dad, or it can be
in many different ways. But your spirit exudes that that
you like to create and bring things into the world

(12:32):
rather than them taking them out. So again, fifth season
of the series ends or starts on September twenty ninth.
The name of the show is Outrageous Pumpkins and find
out more about you my friend Terryharden dot com.

Speaker 4 (12:47):
You can find me on Instagram obviously, isn't everybody on
Instagram at Terry Harden Legend. And then you can also
find me on Facebook, which they say is for old people.
Well I'm an old people, so I'm there and for.

Speaker 2 (12:59):
People want to find out information.

Speaker 4 (13:01):
I like it because it has a community. You know,
it's the only platform that has these private pages where
people can discuss things that shouldn't naturally be on public
as I've seen with some of these poor people that
made a joke and then realized, oh, I should have
read that text again.

Speaker 3 (13:21):
I would have read that post again.

Speaker 4 (13:23):
So this is a place where people can get together.
And this is why I really love this particular thing.
I also have a YouTube channel called Terry TV. If
you just put in your search engine Terry Harden, then
you're going to find me. Because I'm also a Disney imagineer.
I've created things all over the world and this pumpkin
thing was something that I learned about to help artists

(13:44):
realize that they're all artists because just like you said, Neil,
anybody is an artist if they realize what their medium is.
If you're a mom raising your children and everyone goes, wow,
these kids are amazing, you're an artist because we know
that there's any people out there that don't do it
as well as you cleaning anything. Your media can be anything, and.

Speaker 1 (14:06):
You know the difference when you create something on how
you feel nothing better. And you know, looking for your
creatives place wherever it is, they're the best.

Speaker 4 (14:15):
To hire because they're passionate about what they do. So
if you find an artist whose whose media is cleaning,
you're going to have the most amazing looking house you've
ever had in your life. If you have an accountant
whose media is numbers and they can do it in
their head, they just blow you away with their ability.
I remember I was at Imagineering and there was a

(14:36):
guy using a floor polisher and he said, you want
to try it? And I almost drilled to china and
I said, my goodness, you are an artist, and he
just got all happy and excited. But right, anybody do
anything well is art to me exactly, and if it
they make it look easy, the.

Speaker 1 (14:55):
Better they are, the wow, what a pleasure. Thanks for
reaching out.

Speaker 2 (14:59):
I've had. I love this.

Speaker 1 (15:01):
We've got to do this at least year late run
the holidays to come on, but I would love to
maybe put something together next year where where the listeners
can come meet you as well and have the opportunity
to connect with you and maybe carve some pumpkins as well,
because I love your spirit and your focus on creation
and doing those things.

Speaker 4 (15:19):
And Neil, I got to tell you, I've been a
huge fan of yours for longer than I can remember.
I love KFI, I love the I love Saturday because
I'm usually in my studio sculpting away doing whatever here
and there and just taking up painting, which I'm very
excited about. But it's just pumpkins or pumpkins. Season is pumpkins.
I don't charge a lot because I want people to

(15:41):
understand how important is as you were saying earlier, you've
got to create, You've got we do.

Speaker 1 (15:47):
I get depressed when I know, well, thanks so much
for coming in. It was a real pleasure to meet
you and your lovely husband.
