Speaker 1 (00:02):
The segment number two of our Taking seven to sixty
Golf show, Welcoming from Landa Park Golf Course. Gentlemen that
I met twenty six years ago, which we'll talk about
in just a few minutes, might have been even longer
than that. Quin Alexander Quinn, good morning, how are you?
Speaker 2 (00:16):
Hey? Good David, good morning. Yeah, it might be longer
than that. I was trying to think of back when
we first met. But it's been a long time. I
know that.
Speaker 1 (00:23):
Yeah. So then before you were at the Bend, it
weren't you at the Quarry, No, I.
Speaker 2 (00:29):
Was at Santanio Country Club.
Speaker 1 (00:31):
Okay, all right, okay, well now that you mentioned it, though,
I do remember seeing you at Antonio country Club also, yes,
very cool. Hey. So the land of Park golf Course, okay,
it has been around a long long time. It's been
through some renovations and so forth. I finally got to
play there back in December and it looks just gorgeous. Now,
(00:52):
before we talk about what's going on Atlanta, we know
those that have been playing off a long time know
that if you don't have respect for any golf course,
you're going to get in trouble. Landa Park is not
a very long golf course at all, yardage wise. So Quinn,
what can happen if somebody who's got this very good
game but doesn't quite know Landa and looks at the
scorecard and sees that it's not very long and if
(01:14):
they disrespect Landa, what could it do to you?
Speaker 2 (01:18):
Well, it kind of lolls you to sleep a little bit.
I mean as far as going out, I mean there's
a lot of kind of target areas you need to hit. Yeah,
there's a lot of holes, depending on your length, that
you won't use your driver on. So there's water on
fourteen out of eighteen holes, and it's just it will
(01:39):
bite you the first time you play it, until you
until you figure out you know what club to hit
off the tea box.
Speaker 1 (01:44):
No, it's been about ten years since you got the
entire course renovated. Tell us how things are looking these
days out there Atlanta Park.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
It's been great. I mean people who really loved the renovation.
It's been last October eight our tenth years from the
renovation and people love the course. Like I say, it's
very challenging. It it will kind of sneak up on
you when you're thinking about the yardage being about sixty
two hundred from the back. But we have a great
(02:15):
maintenance crew. We have our superintendent, Brody Dillard, who does
a great job out here. And I'm just very proud
of the golf course.
Speaker 1 (02:24):
Our guests right now is Quentin Alexander from Landa Park
golf Course. Quentin. As you know, as I just mentioned,
I played there back in December for the first time
in several years. One of the things that took me
by surprise was how fast the greens were.
Speaker 2 (02:37):
Oh they they that time of year they do start
to speed up. Our greens are we here? You know
as far as people playing around, we do get a
lot of outside play and that they're some of the
best they ever played. So, like say, the maintenance crew
really takes good care of them. And you know, on
(03:00):
average we're about a ten on the Stemp.
Speaker 1 (03:02):
Meter, which is pretty fast. And I found that out
the hardway because I had a couple of three puts
at Dad didn't play that well. I think I shot
in the mid eighties or so. But that's just me
and my game. Now about the golf course itself, whenever
worse FETs comes around, is it is it a lot
more difficult to manage things around the golf course at
that time.
Speaker 2 (03:22):
Uh it is, I mean, you know, I mean we're
we have been very busy. I mean, as I think
a lot of golf courses in this area, maybe nationwide,
have been. Uh it does make it a little more
congested as far as getting here. So during that you know,
about two week period, we try to make sure that
(03:43):
golfers know that is going on and try to route
them the best way to get here, and and and
make the allow for enough time to uh to get
here for that reason. But uh, you know, I mean
you're you get you'll have worst fast goers, you know,
kind of cutting across a golf course, but we're kind
(04:05):
of used to it.
Speaker 1 (04:07):
Quinn Alexander is our guests from land of Park golf Course,
and I alluded to the fact that he and I
met or ran into each other in July nineteen ninety nine.
Now that was when he was out of the Bandit,
and that is the month that I made my first
and only double eagle on number eighteen at the Bandit.
Speaker 2 (04:24):
I think you might remember that, Quinn, I do remember that. Yeah,
I've never made one. I have a few hole ones.
Like I say, I have a brother that's made to albatrosses,
and you're one of the few people I know that
have made albatross so it doesn't happen very often. I
(04:45):
do remember that day.
Speaker 1 (04:46):
It was kind of stormy that day. As a matter
of fact, we were on number eighteen, if I remember
it correctly, there were a lot of storm clouds up
in the sky and on number eighteen, which is a
part five going down wind. The wind was blowing very
very hard that day. And the whole if I remember correctly,
back then, was five hundred and twenty eight yards. And
the reason I say that is because I hit my
(05:06):
drive downwind, mind you, to the two hundred yard marker,
and I hit a two iron back then on my
approach shot, and it bounced off the right hill right
right to the right hand side of the green. There
were two guys that were in a golf cart going
up the path in back of the green and they
stopped the car to look at the ball as it
was tracking, and all of a sudden they pointed and
(05:27):
they said it went in.
Speaker 2 (05:28):
It went in.
Speaker 1 (05:28):
So that was my double legal that day. But couldn't
have done it without the down window because it was
going very strong. It didn't rain till after. But hey,
maybe lightning struck and the storm came because I made
a double legal that day. What do you think when oh.
Speaker 2 (05:41):
Maybe so maybe so that was a tough hole and
it like say, I remember that when you came in
and you said you made it, So that's awesome.
Speaker 1 (05:51):
They quin you know, before we talk about the current
state of golf right now, what is your best score
over Atlanta Park. I mean to put you on the spot,
but I'm putting you on the spot.
Speaker 2 (06:00):
My best score here is sixty seven as far as
seventy one, but I'm trying to break it. I'm gonna
get out there more this year and try to play.
So if I can get a tea time, well that's
another thing.
Speaker 1 (06:14):
You guys have been very busy and it's hard to
get ad time either sometimes, isn't.
Speaker 2 (06:17):
It it is? You know, we do our best as
far as managing our t sheet. You know, we do
have leagues that play on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and then
we do have a league that plays on Saturday. So
just like everybody else, I believe in the golf business.
Just just managing that. You know, it's been a golf boom. Ever,
(06:40):
since you know COVID, there's a lot more young people
playing the game of golf, which is great for the
golf business. And I think there's actually fewer golf courses
in the area. You know. It's just so it's good,
it's great. It's a great problem to have, you know,
because I remember, you know, like say, we've been in
(07:02):
this business a long time when you were just waiting
for golfers to show up. But it is a golf
boom and everybody's busy in the golf business.
Speaker 1 (07:11):
What about the web address for people to find tea
times today?
Speaker 2 (07:13):
For example, you can go to Landa Park Golf Course
dot com and you can make your tea time there.
We make tea times up to two weeks in advance.
You know, there is days that are harder to make,
Like I say, those league days, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday morning
times are tough. Friday, Saturdays a little bit not not
(07:37):
as tough. But you know, Mondays, Fridays and Sundays are
pretty good days to try. So we try to lead
people in spots that they have the best chance. People
do get up at midnight two weeks ahead of time
and do make their time so it's like say, we're
living in a different time as far as making tea times,
(07:59):
and if you really work at it, you can get
pretty close to what you want.
Speaker 1 (08:04):
Quinn Alexander's call us here, There you go. Quinn Alexander's
our guests from Land of Bar golf Course, and before
we chat a little bit about the state of golf.
One more thing, And I don't mean to be a
downer of sorts, but I was looking at the weather
forecast and it looks like we're going to be down
into the mid twenties again. Next week.
Speaker 2 (08:21):
We are, yeah, and we have an event on that Friday,
hoping to have it. I think the weather is going
to turn. It's going to be cold all week, but
I think Wednesday night that's when we get the below
freezing temperature. So we will be preparing the course. We'll
be open on Wednesday and like a normal day, but
(08:44):
our maintenance crew will be winter rising. Obviously are greens
and all the buildings around, and I do believe we'll
probably be closed on Thursday.
Speaker 1 (08:55):
Quinn Alexander's I guess.
Speaker 2 (08:56):
Eason and then reopen on Friday for that event.
Speaker 1 (08:59):
I believe Quinn Alexander's our guess from land of Park Golf.
Let's talk about the PGA Tour right now and number
one in the world, Scotty Scheffler. You know, he was
injured over the holiday season, he was doing something in
the kitchen and all that. He missed the opening couple
of events this year. But now he's in contention, only
one shot back of the lead right now. He was
in contention at the last two events and all that.
(09:21):
But where do you rate scott Okay, Look, it is
very very early, of course. By that I mean, and
I was talking about this in the opening segment with
Tiger season in the year two thousand. But Scotty Shuffler
right now has been number one for one hundred and
twenty four straight weeks. We all know that. Of course,
Tiger was number one for two hundred and eighty one
consecutive weeks one stretch and two sixty for one others stretch.
(09:42):
But where would you see Scotty right now? And he's
only twenty eight years old, Quinn.
Speaker 2 (09:48):
Well, obviously, I mean he's got a good, good start
to try to follow Tiger. I don't know if anybody
will ever do that again, but I think he's got
kind of the right. I meant to do it, you know.
I mean, he's a great player, and I think he
doesn't let things get to him, you know, as far
(10:09):
as you know what he's done, I think he dislikes
to play golf and he's really good at it. And
you know, it's hard to tell. It's just so hard
to tell, you know, with what players go through and
with family and stuff. But he's got a good, good
start to it, and I wouldn't bet against him, that's
for sure.
Speaker 1 (10:28):
You know, you've got Jack Nicholas, and of course Tiger
I'm sorry, Sam's neat and Tiger Woods at the top
where a total of eighty two wins, Jack of course,
having won eighteen majors. And yet we're talking about Scotty.
And yet, as I mentioned in the opening segment, you
hear so many things about so many different players and
names through the years, about hey, he's going to be
the next this, he's going to be the next at.
(10:48):
I'm not saying Scotty's going to be the next Tiger,
but if he goes on the next few years and
wins several events per years, he's got a chance. He's
still got a long way to go, but one of
the things that we mentioned, of course, and and you know,
both you and I just said it, is that nothing
seems to bother him. And uh, proof in the putting
goes back to last year's PGA when he was arrested
(11:08):
on the morning of a round of golf, taking away
in handcuffs, and he comes back and still shoots at
sixty five.
Speaker 2 (11:16):
Yeah. I just like to say he's super talented. I
think he just doesn't let every all the outside forces
get to him. And and like say, probably he has
the best chance of anybody as far as getting you know,
close to what's Tiger's done. And but I mean, it's
just it's so hard to label these guys, you know,
(11:38):
I mean it, Uh, you know, like Jordan Speed had
a great you know, three or four years and then
he then he didn't play as well, and everybody says,
what's wrong with Jordan. I mean, those guys that are
out there, even the ones you don't even see, Uh,
they're really good and there's nothing usually wrong with them.
They're just a lot of good players out there.
Speaker 1 (12:00):
To me, it seems that in this in this modern
world of high technology and all that Quinn, I think
it makes it even more difficult. But you've got such
a deeper pool of guys that are so so good
compared to what it was back in the you know,
sixties and seventies. That's how I see it. How do
you see it from that standpoint?
Speaker 2 (12:17):
Oh, no doubt. I mean, just even locally. I mean,
obviously we grew up playing and since kids and and
you know, we played and maybe you know, ten terms
a year if you're lucky, you know, I mean, that's
that's counting even probably you know, your high school events
(12:37):
and whatever you had. Now now these kids play almost weekly,
you know, so uh, you know, competition, They just used
the competition. And so I'm a true believer. And the
more you compete, especially if you compete with people that
are a little bit better than you, that you're going
to get better. And it doesn't bother you as much
(12:58):
as far as playing and certain events. So they're just
they just have more access to it, so that that's
just developing a lot of good players.
Speaker 1 (13:09):
Quinn Alexander has been our guest from Landa Park Golf
and Quinn, we thank you so much for being on
and of course so thank you for your friendship through
the years. It was great seeing you a couple of
months back. I will plan on getting out there once
again this year. Don't win, but I don't plan nearly
as much golf as Andy ever does. But I will
get out there again sometime soon. Quinn, thank you so much,
very much again and and one more time, give out
the website.
Speaker 2 (13:30):
Okay, we're at Landa Park Golf Course dot com and
uh yeah, you can make tea times up to two
weeks in advance. Also you can call us at a
three zero two two one four three four zero. It
was great talking to you, David.
Speaker 1 (13:45):
Last question with with with the upcoming you know, low
temperatures in the twenties, are you guys going to have
to cover up your greens as well?
Speaker 2 (13:53):
We are. We are going to have to win arise them. Yeah,
and uh we'll do that starting on Wednesday evening and
hoping to get a little warmer temperatures above freezing on Thursday,
and hoping to have a good day on next Friday.
We're having a great day today, I mean it's today
(14:14):
is a full day and I think, you know, people
realize what the weather's going to do, so they try
to get their golf in so February's a kind of
hit or miss. You know, last last week we had,
you know, eighty five degree temperatures and we had a
lot of golfers. So you take the good with the bad.
So uh. But we're right around spring though, so we
(14:36):
look forward to that.
Speaker 1 (14:37):
That's why it's calm mother nature, because she's always changing
her mind. If it was father Nature, it'd be fair
in eighty every day, wouldn't it.
Speaker 2 (14:42):
So that's right, that's right, David.
Speaker 1 (14:44):
Quent Alexander, thank you so much. We'll do it again
down the road. Appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (14:48):
Okay, sounds good, Thank you, sir,
