Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hi everyone, It's Andy Everett. Enjoy this podcast version of
The Golf Show from sports Radio AM seven sixty. The

the ticket.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
This is another edition of The Golf Show. The Golf
Show brought to you by MK Golf Tech, Joe Caruso's
Golf Academy, and by Alamo City Golf Trail. Now on
the first t Andy Everett.

Speaker 1 (00:29):
Here we are at the Valaro, Texas Open as we
get to set for the third round, the sun is
peaking through the clouds. It has been raining for most
of the overnight time and certainly into this morning. We
got a good gush show of rain a little while ago,
but perhaps it's starting to clear up. And this golf
course is going to have a north wind today and tomorrow.

(00:49):
Cool today in the mid sixties, cooler tomorrow, high fifties
for most of the day, and for the first two
days we were near ninety degrees. So if the pros
are going to face an entirely different golf course when
they're out here today and tomorrow, and I can tell
you from experienced golf courses are built with prevailing winds.
Most of the winds in South Texas and San Antonio

(01:11):
come from the south or southwest, occasionally the southeast, but
a predominantly south wind. When they flip that wind around,
the easier holes become harder and the harder holes become
even harder than they were. So it'll be an interesting
situation going in to the third and fourth round. And
if the wind picks up to where they say it is,
where Brian Harmon is right now at minus twelve, the

(01:33):
lead may not be too much greater than that.

Speaker 3 (01:36):
You see.

Speaker 1 (01:36):
I think over the years it's been eighteen to twenty
under that's won this tournament, and if somebody can get
to eighteen in the next two days, they're probably going
to be in the winter circle. Keith Mitchell's in second,
he's four shots back. There's a bunch of seven unders,
and Jordan Speet is now eight back at minus four.
We'll run down some of the Marquis t times coming
up in a little bit on the show today we're

(01:58):
going to visit with Brigononnrado. He is the head professional
out here at TPC San Antonio. Get his thoughts on
the Oaks Course, favorite places that he has. This facility
has certainly improved and changed for the better over the
last fifteen years. Fifteen years now that this tournament has
been here, actually fourteen because we didn't have a tournament
at twenty twenty that nonetheless, this has been a great

(02:21):
facility for the pros and it's in terrific shape right now.
So we'll get down to some of that a little
bit as well. We're also going to visit with John
Wood his schedule to stop by here in a little
bit and get his thoughts on the tour. John Wood
is the NBC reporter former caddy out here on the
PGA Tour for many years, but for the last dozen

(02:42):
and a half dozen years or so, he's been one
of the encourse reporters for NBC and Golf Channel, and
that is there event this week, so we'll have John
out here with us in a little bit. Also, Jack
Nicholas was here last night. He spoke at a benefit
fundraiser for the tournament, and he also met with the
a few hours before that event, so we've got some

(03:03):
sound from him that will play, and as we start
the show today, we're gonna hear from some of the
players that were in contention and made some big moments
yesterday in the second round to put themselves in the
position that they're in to get where they are for
the weekend. We'll start with Brian Harmon. He has the lead,
who shot a six under sixty six yesterday. Back to

(03:23):
back sixty six is for him, so he's at minus
twelve and Brian Harmon said he finally likes the way
his game is this week.

Speaker 3 (03:30):
Yeah, it's been pretty good, controlling my distances nicely. It's
one of the demands this place makes on you really
have control of your ball lands on the green they're
a lot firmer than they seem, and if you're playing
from out of position, it's really tough.

Speaker 1 (03:46):
Brian Harmon won the Open Championship a few years back
when it was at hoy Lake. I believe that was
twenty twenty two, because then they went to the Open
Championship in yeah, yeah, twenty three, twenty two wherever it was.
But Brian Harmon has not necessarily played all that well
since then, and he's looking forward to continuing this this

(04:07):
stretch that he's on.

Speaker 4 (04:08):
Yeah. It has been a slow start.

Speaker 3 (04:10):
Yeah, just a little characteristic, and I've been pretty frustrated.
I haven't really been able to put my finger on.
You know what it is, it's kind of holding me back.
So nice to take a couple of weeks off and
regroup and at least I have a couple of nice
days so far.

Speaker 1 (04:23):
One of the highlights of yesterday's round was the play
of Tony Fenale. Female was comfortably inside the cut line
for quite a while, but then all of a sudden
started not playing so well until he got to the
sixteenth when he had a hole in one.

Speaker 4 (04:37):
Yeah, that was fun.

Speaker 5 (04:38):
I watched two really good shots right in front of me,
and so kind of I think it kind of opened
the green up a little bit.

Speaker 4 (04:42):
Yeah, I kind of had a good idea. How far
was playing being the last kind of hits? So O
thought you still got to execute the shot. What was
the club in shot shape?

Speaker 5 (04:51):
Yeah, it was one hundred ninety nine yards, a little
bit of help win so hitding aate iron and we're
just trying to pitch it like one two righting there
and obviously perfect. How about the timing chasing the cut, Yeah,
I know that's what it was. It was really timely,
and that's why I reacted the way I did.

Speaker 4 (05:07):
It was I needed something to go my way.

Speaker 5 (05:09):
I was leaking oil kind of coming in and really
shoot myself on the foot on any chance to play
the weekend.

Speaker 4 (05:14):
So there was a huge shot at the right moment.

Speaker 1 (05:17):
And we also heard from Jordan speak yesterday and he
was talking about Jordan's second round and not the round
that he got on the first day. But he's still
in contention just eight shots back.

Speaker 3 (05:30):
I didn't play very well today by any means. I
had less control of the ball and was hanging in
there for a little while on the front nine or
my front nine and the h and then I really
I lost four shots chipping from this rough around the
greens and on the last night holes, and each one
it's like, well, it could jump or it could and

(05:51):
I just felt like I was feel like I was
just picking heads or tails and just losing each one.

Speaker 4 (05:56):
The chips felt fine, and each.

Speaker 3 (05:58):
One came out completely different than I thought. Sometimes it
happens like, you know, the shorter the rough, the weirder
the situation versus it's stick, you know exactly what you
got to do.

Speaker 1 (06:08):
Probably the big the biggest mistake that speech made yesterday
was on the first hole, which was his tenth of
the day, and on that hole he had to take
it unplayable, hit it just left with the green and
he was in one of those situations where it was,
you know, classic Jordan, you thought he was going to
be able to knock it closer or get it in.
It did not work out and he ended up with
a double buggie on the on the uh on the

(06:28):
first tull. Also, he talked about this golf course and
how difficult it is to perform out here at TPC.

Speaker 4 (06:35):
I mean, you just have to drive the ball well here.

Speaker 3 (06:36):
And if you're driving it well, you know, then then
you should have quite a few good looks. And then
the other thing is you got to play in the wind.
You gotta fly the ball some, you gotta throw some
in the air. You got to just be a little
creative in the height the hit shots some of sometimes
the curves. So it's normally just the Texas wind. And
then the times I've played well here, I drove it.
You know, I've been driving it well. And the green

(06:58):
complexes are pretty funky, So some look pretty good and
others look terrible to me, like as far as committing
to a shot, So it's a little mixed bag. It's
not like I come here and I'm like, oh, yeah,
this looks easy for some reason. It's a hard golf
course with a premium on putting the ball in the fairway, but.

Speaker 4 (07:15):
With a rough so low.

Speaker 3 (07:17):
You know, some of these backpins, it's almost better to
be in this rough because he's landing on the middle
of the green and it runs up. And so the
times I've actually been in the rough, I've actually hit
better approach shots in a weird way.

Speaker 1 (07:27):
So that's the thoughts of some of the players out
of here. Keith Mitchell eight under, He's in second. Sam
Ryder did not have a good day yesterday, seventy four
minus seven. Matt Wallace and Rio Hisatsune are at minus
seven as well. Daniel Berger tried to make a comeback
after a bunch of injuries a couple of years ago,
starting to get his game back in shape. He's at
minus six. Patrick Can'tley moved up the leader board. He

(07:49):
is also at minus six. And the golf will start
today in about two hours. They'll get into way at
ten different golf course today with the weather, lots of
things to look forward to on that up. After the break,
we're gonna hear from John Wood from NBC and Golf
Channel Briannorato in a little while as well, and we'll
hear from Jack Nicholas. That's coming up. It's the Golf
Show on the ticket
