Focusing on the Christ

Focusing on the Christ

The greatest gift that God has given to man was the incarnation of God Himself. The coming of Jesus Christ is THE event to which all history has pointed - both prior to His coming and since His resurrection. This series considers the Shadow of Christ, the Life of Christ, the Return of Christ, the Reign of Christ, and the Reflection of Christ. This series was shared by Bob Corbin at Family Bible Church, located in Martinez GA, over a span of 19 months from December 2010 through July 2012.

Last but not least! This message is the final message in the Focusing on the Christ series. However, as we seek to Focus On and Reflect Christ in this world the need for prayer is critical to the accomplishment of the goal. As a result of our communion, compassion and commitment to one another, we are called as a body to lift up one another in prayer before the throne of God. Could it be that the apathy and lethargy of the American...

As we seek to reflect Christ as a local body of believers, we must continue keep the goal of the assembly at the forefront of our mind. As individuals are to seek to glorify God by being conformed to the image of Christ, so the goal of the local assembly is to glorify God while coming to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ. To reach...

What we say, and how we live, is a reflection of Who is reigning in our heart ... both individually and collectively. The church is called upon to function as a healthy body loving one another, serving one another and bearing with one another. Yet, we are called upon to go to a more proactive posture and that is to receive one another. This message exams the exhortation, exceptions and exhibition of our call to receive one another....

As we seek to fulfill the commands to love one another and serve one another within the context of the local assembly there will be special people who making loving and serving a little more difficult. It is for those times when we as a body are commanded to bear with one another. Bearing with one another requires self-examination (considering your own imperfections), humility, gentleness and longsuffering. If we truly want to see ...

Scriptures tells us that the Greatest Command is to love the LORD your God with all your heart, soul and mind. The greatest expression of our love for God is our service to God (Deut 10:12). Likewise, within the assembly of those who worship God, the greatest expression of loving one another is serving one another. However, serving one another means that we must humble ourselves and lift up others. Their values and their needs must...

As children are a reflection of their parents, so believers should be of their heavenly Father. Just as there are certain character traits that are symbolic of certain families, so there should be of the family of God. That primary character trait should be love. Not only are we, as disciples of Christ, commanded to love one another but we are told in 1 John 4 that it is an evidence of true believers. Those who know God will love; ...

The main illustration of the church in the scriptures is the body of Christ. The church, as a body, is made up of many members. In order for the body of Christ to grow biblically it needs to recognize the biblical goal set for it: "till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect (teleion) man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness (plaeromatos) of Christ." This goal can only b...

A primary illustration of the church in Scripture is "the body of Christ." Paul declared to the church of Ephesus that "Christ is the head of the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all." As the Head, He is in charge. The Body should move at His impulse. Sadly, many local churches today are dysfunctional. We need to recognize, as well, that our Head has a charge for His Body: to walk worthy. Our local ch...

In the New Testament the church is described, in its relationship with Jesus Christ, as: the building, the bride and the body. Christ, as the bridesgroom, is preparing a place for His bride and will one day return to take her to His Father's home where there will be a wedding supper prepared! Until that time, the church is betrothed to Christ as His bride. We are to be united to Him in submission, holiness and oneness; seeking to r...

As we individually reflect Christ in our lives (through our words, finances and relationships), so as a collective group of believers, the church collectively reflects Christ in their functions and interactions. The New Testament gives three illustrations in describing the church and its relationship with Christ: the building, the bride and the body. Collectively we are being built upon the foundation of the Word of God (both the S...

Though we no longer practice slavery in the United States, the Scriptures regarding the relationship between masters and servants applies to us in our occupational relationships. Employees should seek to serve their employers with respect, commitment and integrity. Likewise, employers should seek to treat their employees with the respect, commitment and integrity that they would desire to receive. If you were an employer, would you...

Fathers, provoke not your children to wrath, but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. Biblically, fathers are to be the primary spiritual leaders of their homes. It was predominantly men that Moses was talking to on the east side of the Jordan River when he declared, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your mind and with all your strength. And the words which I teach you this day shal...

What we say, and how we live, is a reflection of Who, or what is residing and reigning in our heart! That truth applies to children as well. The Bible states that even a child is known by his doings. Children are commanded in Scripture to obey their parents, in the Lord, for this is right. This command is joined by the promises: that it will go well with you and that you may live long on the earth. ... This message was presented on...

"Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, that He might present her to Himself a glorious church ..." As women were to reflect the church in its relationship to Christ, so men are to reflect the love of Christ for the church. The love of Christ was first (we love Him because He first loved us), sacrificial,...

If Christ is residing and reigning in your heart, then it will be reflected in your words, in your finances, and in your relationships. In Ephesians 5 and 6 we see three primary relationships that we have: marital, parental and occupational. Scripture teaches that the wife is to reflect Christ in her submission to her husband. More specifically, she reflects how Christ believes the church ought to submit to Him. Submission to the h...

In much of the appropriation of our financial resources, we do not need to make many decisions, we merely pay our bills. However, what is our priority for the surplus of our financial resources? The scriptures teach that we should be postured to give and investing in eternity. What is your view of surplus? Is it extra that God has given you to invest in eternity, or for your own indulgence? How are you glorifying God and reflecting...

Those who are properly reflecting Jesus in the appropriation of their financial resources will be giving God the first portion and priority. Afterwards, we must consider the taxation requirements of the government and then the needs of our family. An additional consideration in our budgets is our handling of debt. We are told in the book of Proverbs that the borrower is servant to the lender. It should be the goal of every beli...

The appropriation of our financial resources is one of the primary reflections of the spiritual reign of Christ in our hearts. Jesus said, "where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." In the last message we discussed how God was to be given the first fruit and the first tenth of our finances. As we budget our resources, the next two considerations in the appropriation of our finances should be the government and our fam...

Jesus said, "where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." How we appropriate the financial resources with which God has blessed us reveals the priority of our heart. The greatest command is for us to love the LORD our God with all of our heart. Hence, God should be THE top priority in the appropriation of our finances as well. The Scriptures reveal that we are to give our first fruits, tithes, and offerings to the LORD. ...

Jesus said, "where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." If Jesus Christ is residing and reigning in your heart then it will reflected in how we handle our finances. If Jesus is the Lord of our finances, then we will recognize that we are to be stewards of the resources which God has entrusted to us. Paul stated, "Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful." There are two main aspects to functioning ...
