Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to Community View Boys at Shawnie Feeling blessed and
highly favored.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
On this Sunday morning.
Speaker 1 (00:05):
We are empowering our communities, we are empowering our schools.
And today on the phone, I have Venus high Smith.
She is here to talk to us about the William M.
Rains National Alumni Association and what her involvement is. But
before we get there, Venus, how are you today?
Speaker 3 (00:21):
I am great, Shannie, blessed and highly favored.
Speaker 4 (00:24):
Thank you.
Speaker 1 (00:25):
The reason why I wanted to bring you in was
because we've been seeing each other in passing and you
have shared what you do with William M.
Speaker 2 (00:33):
Rains.
Speaker 1 (00:34):
If you would, before we get to that, share a
little bit about yourself and your history with Jacksonville.
Speaker 3 (00:39):
So I was born and raised in Jacksonville, went to
local school all the way from Grand Park Elementary to
ruf of E. Payne Paxson Junior, and graduated from William M.
Range High School in class of nineteen eighty two. And
so I am involved with RAIN still to this day
(01:03):
as president of William and Raine's National Alumni Association. And
so our mission is to build relationships with the alumni
as we raise funds for scholarships and general student needs,
as well as partner with the business and local community organizations.
Speaker 1 (01:29):
And I see that you are embedded in this community.
You are rooting for Rains. We had some champions go
to a championship came back as winners. They didn't win
the title, but trust me, they were winners. And so
I understand the drive that you have for the community
and for William M.
Speaker 2 (01:46):
Rains.
Speaker 1 (01:47):
Now, venus talk to us, tell us how can the
community get involved to help you raise funds for scholarships
so that you can empower the students in our community.
Speaker 3 (01:56):
Not only are our kids champions on the field in sports,
our kids are also champions academically. Rings has consistently had
graduation rates over ninety percent for many years under the
leadership of Principal Vincent Hall, and so our students may
not receive the resources as some of the other schools,
(02:19):
but that spirit of excellence is embedded in every Range
student that has attended since doctor Andrews. A. Robinson Junior
was the first principal back in nineteen sixty five, and
so we carry the spirit, the pride, and the tradition
with us throughout each graduating class that comes to rings
(02:41):
and so right now our organization helps to fill in
some of the gaps with scholarships and as I stay
at general student needs and so we are a follow
one C three organization. Your donations are tax deductible. We
are currently raising funds for students from Range who are
graduating in the class of twenty twenty five. Those students
(03:05):
are members of our community, will come back and feld
part of our community, and so we want to help
them to get a great start off for college.
Speaker 1 (03:16):
And that's what we should be doing for our community.
Venus high Smith here with me community talking about her
passion giving back to her alumni. Venus, I know that
you know with the holiday season with us just being
out and about the class of nineteen eighty two is
a class that I see that is powerful.
Speaker 2 (03:38):
You are everywhere.
Speaker 1 (03:40):
Your friendship, just the camaraderie is amazing and it looks good.
So thank you for showing that class.
Speaker 3 (03:46):
Of nineteen eighty two is from Range and so special.
A lot of us have actually known each other since
elementary school and we have through the years gone to school.
But our tie that really binds us is Raine High School.
And so you have doctors, lawyers, you have bank executives,
you have professors, you have business entrepreneurs, you have ministers,
(04:14):
you have all sorts of people who graduated from RAINS.
And in our class in particular, we celebrated our turning
sixty this year and we have traveled together. We had
parties all throughout the year, but we also party with
a purpose and we give back. And so whether that's
(04:35):
school supplies, whether that's banksgiving meals, whether that's donations for
other charitable causes that may be happening with RAINS such
as a scholarship or whatever event that RAINS is asking
money for our classes on the ball as well as
many of the other classes of RAINS. Ranks has a
(04:57):
lot of students who graduated that and they come back
and give back all the way from class in nineteen
sixty six all the way through our current class. Again,
that spirit is embedded in us. And we kicked off
this year's fundraiser with giving Tuesdays, and we rose right
into our annual scholarship fundraiser as we talked about the scholarships.
(05:19):
Those scholarships for our students range anywhere from five hundred
dollars to five thousand dollars each and We've had students
going to Florida A and M, but throughing Cookman Howard University,
Florida State, University of Florida, University of North Florida, Florida
State College at Jacksonville, North Carolina, AT and T State University,
(05:44):
Santa Fe College, and many more. We just want to
extend the opportunity to the community to help some of
our students continue on with their drive and passion to
become successful members of society as well as this community.
We encourage everyone to donate and we also have a
(06:06):
matching donor who is going to match the first five
thousand dollars in donations.
Speaker 1 (06:10):
Community Shawnee speaking to Venus Highsmith, President of William M.
Rain's National Alumni Association, here to empower us there on
a journey of greatness. They're partying for a purpose of Venus.
How can the community donate or help with these scholarships?
Help William M. Rain's High School Alumni Association raise the
(06:30):
funds they need to help the students in our community.
Speaker 3 (06:35):
There are two main ways to donate to this cause.
You can donate via Facebook if you're on Facebook, and
to search for fundraisers and type in William m Raine's
National Alumni Association. There is awww dot Facebook dot com
(06:56):
donate and then once you see that you can go
to our page. Also, we have a main donation page
and if you are not on Facebook or do not
want to donate through Facebook, you can donate through our
main donation page which is RAINS National Alumni dot kindful
(07:19):
dot com. And I'm want to take my time and
spell that Rain's National Alumni dot kindful which is k
I N D s U L dot com. And you
will have an option to select given Tuesday slash Annual
(07:39):
Scholarships in the dropdown box and you will automatically receive
receipts from your donations for your tax purposes.
Speaker 2 (07:48):
Being great on purpose.
Speaker 1 (07:49):
Thank you Venus Heismith for joining us today in community viewpoints.
Amazing group of individuals who will not stop and party
for a purpose anything else.
Speaker 2 (08:00):
Venus.
Speaker 3 (08:01):
Have a great holiday season everyone, and thank you so
much for giving me time to share about writing National
Alumni associations efforts for empowering students in our community. Thank you, Shanni.
Speaker 1 (08:16):
It's what we do here at iHeart and what we
should continue doing because our children and the future belongs
to them. So thank you for empowering our community, empowering
our students, empowering the future Venus.
Speaker 2 (08:27):
Thank you for your time today.
Speaker 3 (08:29):
Thank you, And as we.
Speaker 1 (08:30):
Continue with community viewpoints, re running a few amazing interviews
sharing individuals giving back in a big way. On this
Sunday morning, we are empowering our community. The holidays are
upon us and we have some amazing, phenomenal individuals who
are giving back to the community. So today I have
Shanta Pride Chantay.
Speaker 2 (08:51):
How are you?
Speaker 4 (08:52):
I am great Shani, how are you?
Speaker 1 (08:55):
You know, blessed to know people in the community, no
individuals who are giving b who don't think it robbery
to create an event to help the needy. So if
you would just tell the community just a little something
about yourself.
Speaker 4 (09:09):
Well, Shanie, I am Shante Pride. Most people know me
as one of the two Dope Chicks, but I'm also
the farm administrator for Daniel's Law Firm, which is you know,
both of our businesses, and we do our best to
create memories and we do our best to entertained, but
(09:30):
we also make sure that we give back to our community.
Speaker 1 (09:33):
The holidays are upon us, Chante, and I know that
you all do a lot as two Dope Chicks, but
you also funnel your energy into inspiring and engaging and empowering.
So talk to us about your movement as two Dope Chicks,
but what it is that you do to inspire or
empower the community.
Speaker 4 (09:53):
To inspire and empower the community, we're always vigilant as
much as possible. Yes, we have a lot of dope
events where people can just relax and enjoy themselves in
a safe environment, and just making sure that we're taking
care of ourselves. Self care is very important to us,
so we try to create that healthy balance, especially amongst professionals,
(10:17):
because we're professionals and we know that sometimes it's hard
to create that balance. So we do our best with
Two Dope Chicks to just empower in that way. With
this particular event with the Tens the Season giveaway, we
just realized twenty twenty four has been a rough year
for some. Inflation is real and we have noticed that
(10:41):
family sometimes they're forced to make a choice between gas
for their vehicles or groceries, or it may be going
to the laundromat and deciding instead of washing all my
loads today, I can only wash one or two loads.
So this holiday season shining Daniel's Law Firm as well
as two Tho Chicks. We just want to empower people
(11:02):
by giving them a reason to smile and not be
overwhelmed with the typical holiday stress.
Speaker 2 (11:09):
Really, what does the holidays mean to you?
Speaker 4 (11:10):
Chante all the holidays It's a time for friends, for family,
for celebration connections, reconnections. It's also a great time to
slow down from the hustle and bustle because you know,
some of us are off and we can just sit
hopefully for a second and reflect. And of course it's
a time forgiving.
Speaker 1 (11:31):
And what I try to do each and every week
is highlight individuals who are giving back to the community,
who are trying to allow the community to thrive and survive.
So tell us about the event happening to the Season
Giveaway and how the community can get involved.
Speaker 4 (11:47):
The Season Giveaway is every year we have tried our
best to partner with another organization right in the heart
of the community. Last year we with Boys and Girls
Club in Northeast Florida at the celebration site. This year
we're coming back and we're partnering with Boys and Girls
(12:08):
Club in Northeast Florida once again at Ruttlish Pearson Elementary
School on Roanoke Boulevard. The site director is Mss Destiny Bland,
and we realize there was a great needs in that program.
They service over one hundred and fifty plus kids just
in the Boys and Girls Club alone. Also, it's not
just open to the Boys and Girls Club or just
(12:30):
Rutlish Pearson Elementary School students. It's open to the city.
It's open to the community because that is what this
event is about. We really just want to make sure
that everyone that wants to participate to know that there's
a joy in serving. Bring your talents. We definitely need
a face painter right now. If you want to dress
up like Santo, Mss Claus whomever. The kids really enjoy
(12:55):
They really enjoyed last year just seeing the different characters.
You could be a clown and want to do balloons, etc.
We welcome you the more the Maria because definitely the
bigger the impact. I can tell you. Shannie Well truly
warmed our hearts last year. The Florida Avengers, which is
a women's tackle football team right in Jacksonville. They came
(13:15):
last year and they played games with the kids. Just
to see the kids enjoy playing outside and the laughter.
It was heartwarming. The Florida Avengers, they are coming back
with us this year. We have some amaze and volunteers.
Of course, we have some members of Alpha Kappa Alpa
Sorority incorporated Kayta five Sorority. Those are our nurses, Jack
(13:38):
and Jill of America. We will have a DJ, DJ
Marcus new Naz he'll provide the music. We have Casey
Williams where photos by CLW He's gonna capture the moment.
We have some great sponsors by Star Credit Union. They're
back for the third year in a row. Blue Zones
Project of Jacksonville. They're back for a second year with
(13:58):
us providing the delicious food. Of course, of course you
have two Dope Chicks and this year we have started
our own not for profits. Two Dope Chicks Give a
Care and so we're definitely heavily involved. And we all
know that without Attorney Milicenty Daniels hashtag the People's Attorney
of Daniels Law Firm, none of this would be possible.
(14:20):
She has a huge heart for the city, for the community,
and we just want to thank everyone that has returned
this year and all of the newcomers as well for
assisting in this endeavor to give back. Thanks to everyone
that is giving the kids and an experience. It's not
just coming and grabbing a gift the kids. We really
(14:41):
wanted them to have an experience. So they're going to
have bounce houses, food hay rides. We have a gaming
truck where they can get on the truck and play
their virtual video games. Everyone would leave with a nice gift.
We're also going to have a raffle for bikes and laptops.
So call us. Call us at nine oh four to
four three twelve nineteen, press option one if you want
(15:03):
to join in. We will be located at rutally Jas
Pearson Elementary School on Saturday, November thirtieth, from ten to six.
We have two different shifts coming in from ten to
two and two to six to help us wrap all
the gifts and prepare for Sunday, the actual event December first.
It's still going to be at the elementary school at
(15:24):
Rutlish Pearson and we'll be there from one to five
for this great event, and registration is still open so
everyone is welcome. We're gonna have fun.
Speaker 1 (15:34):
Seannie, Well, it sounds like fun and I like to
deliver a point where we are here to empower a community.
We understand inflation and life is life in community. We
have a group of people who are here to empower you,
to provide and give back. And I just want to
ask you, know, giving back means different things to different people.
(15:57):
What does giving back during the holidays season mean to you?
After saying all of this, providing all of this joy
that you will be instilling into all these children, what
does it mean to you?
Speaker 4 (16:10):
Well, what it means to me. And I think I
can speak for us and what a lot of people
may not know about. Both Milicin and myself two don't chicks.
Both of us are pks, both of us are preacher kids.
So here's where I get a little spiritual and get
a little biblical as well, because Jesus is the reason
for the season. We've always been taught that it's better
(16:31):
to give than to receive, and sometimes in order to
receive blessings, you got to be a blessing. And so
when we think about this whole event and giving and
not just doing the holiday season, we do our best
to give back all through the year. And we always
go back to Matthew six thirty three, which say seeking
(16:52):
first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all
things will be added unto you. It means if you
prioritize God will and his righteousness above all else, everything
else you need will be provided for you. So this
is not all about material possessions the verse. It's not
about accumulating material will, but focusing on our alignment with
(17:16):
God's will and God, you know he wants us to
help our neighbor. So trust if you help others, your
needs also will be taken care of. So that's what
giving back during this holiday season means to us, because
we have to bring it back to the reason we need.
Speaker 1 (17:32):
Shawnee speaking to Chantey Pride. She is here from two
Dope Chicks. They have a plethora of information for you.
They are in the community empowering us with this event. Again, Chantey,
the date of the event and how can the community
register or get involved.
Speaker 4 (17:49):
The date of the actual event is December the first,
from one o'clock to five o'clock. We will be located
at Rutlish Pierson Elementary forty three forty six, throwing a boulevards.
The ways of register get involved. We have a QR code,
but you can also call us at nine oh four
four three two twelve nineteen. We'll be more than happy
(18:10):
to give that QR poll to you and that will
take you to the JOT form to register. You can
also give us a call at nine oh four eight
three four six three two one.
Speaker 1 (18:22):
Community Shawnee empowering the community each and every Sunday, providing
an avenue for you to get out this holiday season
enjoy the giving as well as the experience. Chante, I
know you guys are always delivering and providing an avenue
of enjoyment. What do you see coming in the twenty
(18:42):
twenty five and how can the community or anyone get involved?
If they want to be a volunteer, sponsor, and or
just be connected to this movement, they.
Speaker 4 (18:53):
Can definitely send us the email at iidpe Chicks cics
at gmail dot com. We do respond promptly to their emails.
They can also visit our website at I built chicks
dot com. Again, those phone numbers work as well nine
(19:15):
on four four three through twelve nineteen or nine O
four A three four sixty three two one. We'll be
more than happy to let you know the upcoming events
and how you and your organization can partner with us
and participate because we're all here just to make our
community better.
Speaker 1 (19:31):
Thank you so much for being a part of Community
Viewpoints today. We appreciate your empowerment. We appreciate your thought
process ensuring that the community that you serve is served
through the holidays anything else, Chante, I.
Speaker 4 (19:45):
Truly appreciate you giving us this opportunity.
Speaker 1 (19:48):
Opportunity is key and when people here, they listen. We
have to highlight the people who are giving back and
who are new to the process of giving back. So
know that you are empowering and engage a community and
moving them to different levels of enjoyment. It's refreshing when
you see new people on the scene doing different things,
(20:08):
new things. It just gives everybody a different way of living.
Speaker 4 (20:11):
Absolutely well, we appreciate it, and.
Speaker 1 (20:13):
I'm sure the community will appreciate you and your endeavors
as you empower the community. And we're back with Community Viewpoints.
Shawne feeling blessed and highly favored. On the Sunday morning.
We have community advocates who are pouring into our community,
having exciting events that leads up to an event that
pours back into the community. So today I have Katina.
(20:36):
Katina is here to talk to us about an event
that she is adamant about, but she has a drive
and a passion to empower the community, so she's creating
a win win with the community.
Speaker 2 (20:47):
Katina, how are you today?
Speaker 4 (20:49):
I'm doing great, you know, Katina.
Speaker 1 (20:52):
When I saw the information, I said, this lady is
a go getter. She is in the community, trying to
pour in to our children and around the time where
the holidays mean so much to everyone. So first tell
us a little something about you and then we'll get
into the plethora of things that you have been doing
(21:13):
and what you will be doing to empower the community.
Speaker 5 (21:16):
I'mkk Nickins. I am the executive director of the DIT Foundation.
We've been doing this Heal of Heart, food, clothing and
toy giveaways. This year will be twelve years. It's hard
to believe. We're a grassroots community started right here in
Jacksonville and this was a guy given mission to feed
(21:41):
and close the community and we've just been blessed to
continue to do it. And this year we have an
additional event that we're going to do where we're going
to invite the community to be a part of the
pre gather of the toys that we are going to
(22:02):
give out on December twenty first. At the twelfth end,
you will heal a heart, clothing and toy giveaway.
Speaker 2 (22:08):
Mandy you let me tell you something.
Speaker 1 (22:10):
She has a planned event that is going to stir
your soul, but it's also going to give you something
to do this holiday season. So Katina, talk to us
about your mission statement with a DP Foundation and your
why behind why you want to give back.
Speaker 5 (22:27):
The why is it was a God given assignment that
we have been fulfilling for our twelve years. And I'm
just passionate about giving back to the community because you
can't be guys given. And when I started this outreach,
(22:50):
I was in a bad place financially. I felt like
I didn't even have anything to give anyone else. And
so I believe it was the sacrificial giving even when
I didn't have an abundance. And so over the years,
God has continued to bless us to continue to bless others.
(23:11):
And as I say that, this year, we're going to
have any well two events where we're going to invite
the community out. We're going to have entertainment, food and
give the community an opportunity to be a blessing, because
I think that's what we're all here to be a blessing.
(23:32):
And the more you give, you the more you receive.
I hear a lot of people, you know, sometimes they're wondering,
you know, why they don't have as much as they could.
Speaker 3 (23:41):
They're looking at.
Speaker 5 (23:42):
You know, their own lack and so sometimes I feel
like if we take the focus off of ourselves and
put it on to others, we'll see how much more
blessed we are. Because you know, it's not as bad
as we think. And the holiday time is a great
time for for everyone to come together and just give
(24:03):
give a little community.
Speaker 1 (24:04):
Shawnee speaking to Katina Micking. She's here to empower us all,
but also speaks into our souls today to enlighten us
of you know, coming from a dark place but understanding
the mission statement that God puts on our heart and
to give back. So with the holiday season, Katina thinks
that we all should come out but pour into our community.
(24:26):
So Katina talk to us about the first event December
the seventh, and of what the community can do to
get involved.
Speaker 5 (24:32):
So on December seventh, from twelve pm to two pm,
we're having a toy drive. We're inviting the community to
come out purchase toys. You can do give cards, you
can do bikes, you can do whatever God lays on
your heart. You can drive through and drop your donations off,
or you can come inside. We're going to have mimosas,
(24:53):
We're going to have some of our durs for you
to take part in, and we need violence here is
to help us collect the toys. It's going to be
amazing time. We called it a toy drive and a
community gathering because we're gathering together. We're collecting all these
donations so we can pass them out on December twenty.
Speaker 1 (25:13):
First, Katina, I see that you are adding this piece
of the entertainment to your drive annually, because when we
spoke off Mike, you said that you've been, you know,
doing this in the community each year with other sponsors,
but this year you're adding a little touch, giving the
community something to get out, connect with people and enjoy
(25:36):
new experiences like this event.
Speaker 5 (25:39):
And what a great cause to give. It's the time
of giving. The more we give, the more we received,
and Christmas, in my opinion, it's about Jesus because that's
who's first in my life and no other way to celebrate.
He came to give, and so I stand for that
and that's what we're going to do. My real estate brokers,
(26:01):
Katina Prevails real.
Speaker 4 (26:03):
Estate were we are sponsoring this event.
Speaker 5 (26:06):
The first one as well as the second event where
at four pm we're going to have the Holiday mixer
and a fundraiser. The entry to come in is gonna
be a toy or a gift card. For those can't
make it. From twelve to two come out, we're gonna
have a live ban. We're gonna have drinks, food, a
(26:27):
great way to network, and raffles and we want to
just you know, raise money for the foundation and to
gather as many resources as we can to help as
many families as we can on distribution Day, which is
December twenty first in d Shawnie.
Speaker 2 (26:46):
Speaking to Katina Mickens.
Speaker 1 (26:48):
She's here as a community advocate, but I also hear
that you're an entrepreneur an year in, year out, you're
giving back once you you know, create your own foundation.
So to all the entrepreneurs out there, Katina, what keeps
you motivated to give each and every holiday season with
the DP Foundation and also through your brokerage.
Speaker 5 (27:11):
I think the motivation is seeing the smiles on the
kids' faces, just knowing that we are Heaven's hands here
on earth.
Speaker 1 (27:22):
You know.
Speaker 5 (27:22):
I feel like when God wants to bless you, he
uses people, and I'm just honored to be one of
those people. Our organization is just honored. And I can
do nothing but encourage all of you out there who
are listening. If you want to add more to your life,
the more you give, the more you receive. And it's
(27:44):
not easy. It's about sacrifice, and that's what love is.
And if we want to show love to one another,
we should give, and not only just in the holiday
season because I give you round.
Speaker 3 (27:56):
But this is just one.
Speaker 5 (27:58):
Event that, like I said, say that God had given
me an assignment to do and I just had to
stay faithful. And when you stay faithful, you'll see the results.
And I know that my workers, which we're celebrating four years,
it's only successful because I.
Speaker 1 (28:16):
Give committed to excellence and community centered approach with the
driven attitude for success. Katina, your inspiring story for all
those out there that have come through a time but
you still prevail and now you're here giving back to
the community. Anybody that you would want to think because
(28:36):
I know it's not easy and you have a team
that's behind you and unsponsors.
Speaker 5 (28:41):
Of course, I want to thank iHeartMedia. I want to
thank wj XT Channel four Faith Heating an air Katina Prevails,
the real estate people just over the years that have
given to our organization, To each of you that donated
it's toys or gently use clothing because we do clothing
(29:03):
as well. I just want to say thank you, and
we're not done. We've helped over twenty five hundred families
and I just believe that in the future we'll be
able to do even more. Their strength and numbers in
which why this has opened up to give more people
an opportunity, because sometimes you don't know who you can
(29:24):
partner with or who you can connect with. This is
good grounds again.
Speaker 3 (29:29):
We're grassroots.
Speaker 5 (29:30):
We've been helping the community. We're effective. We're not popular,
but we are effective and I'm seeing you know a
lot of what God is doing and we invite you
to be a part. We need volunteers, we need more sponsors,
and we just invite you to donate. This is the
website vi T Foundation dot org. Learn more about the Foundation,
(29:52):
and if you are interested in volunteering, you can give
us a call it nine oh four for three, eight
for three for seven And I'm just looking forward to
seeing each and every one of you out on December seventh.
Let's make this a day to remember, and we're gonna
do it together.
Speaker 1 (30:10):
I believe it's great to come out in numbers to
support a drive and a cause that is effective and
affects children and families. Community Shawnee speaking to Katina Mickens.
She's here to talk to us about the DP foundation
annual Heala Hart Giveaway.
Speaker 2 (30:26):
Community.
