Speaker 1 (00:00):
Sports breef the Oscar bazz edession from Sean Callahan Liven
Like on Rosie.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
Shouto, I was struck by some of the details that
came out of Judge Claudia Wilkins courtroom last week relative
to the big settlement between the NCAA current players former players,
And one of the things she said was, by the way,
you're not cutting rosters, What does that mean exactly from
where you sit.
Speaker 3 (00:22):
Well, a lot of the damage has already been done though,
in the way these schools have recruited I mean coaches.
And I talked to one coach at a non revenue
sport He's like, you know, we had a pretty good idea.
This was coming two years ago from Treuv Alberts. I mean,
he had a good feel on this. So they had
been preparing to cut their particular sports roster for the
(00:44):
last two recruiting cycles. And I think a rare outlier
is going to be like Nebraska football, who has one
hundred and thirty one guys or whatever the number is
right now, so you can bring one fifteen into training camp.
So I mean, they're not that bad right now as
far as the number goes. It just might mean there
could be fifteen twenty kids that get a stay on
(01:07):
versus moving on. But if they do go to a
hard cap of one five, you would think there's going
to be an option where if they choose to stay
at that school, they're going to be financially compensated because
of the disruption that this would cause these families and
these young men by being forced to possibly leave. So
that's the one thing that we don't really know what
(01:27):
direction it's going to go and why there has to
be a cap in the first place.
Speaker 2 (01:32):
And I presume this will affect all sports, not just football.
Football was the big headliner because so many programs have
well passed one hundred and five players on the team.
They like to have as many guys around as possible
for injuries and development and whatnot. But there was also
big news over the weekend involving the starting quarterback at Tennessee,
(01:53):
who said, you know what, I'm not happy with my
financial arrangement, so I'm sitting out. I'm going to hold out.
First of all, your impression of that and whether you
think this could lead to other similar scenarios as.
Speaker 3 (02:05):
They're calling him Nico, I am a leaving yeah, But
I'm pretty good that situation. I mean, you know, from
what I've been able to I've talked to a lot
of people about this over the weekend. Our company on
three broke the news Thursday and they were actually attacked
by Nico's father and handlers that the story was false.
And Friday morning he left and he was out of there.
(02:29):
But you know, my understanding is an ally ragent first
of all, is like a four year, eight million dollar agreement.
He's paid very well. I mean, he's paid two million
as red shirt year to not play essentially, so Tennessee
has taken great care of him. But it's a it's
a pretty restrictive ANIL deal where all the earnings flow
through Tennessee, where like a Dylan Royola in IL agreement,
(02:49):
he's got his big Nebraska portion of the payment, but
then he's also able to do other things on top
of that. Dylan Roola has an Adidas agreement, he has
a Panini Cards agreement, and I'm guessing a sort of
like Nico his camp, you know, they want a little
bit more of a deal that allows them to do
more on top of what the school's paying them. So
(03:11):
he signed, you know, not a great deal, but doesn't
look like he had great representation helping him. It was
his dad and a group of handlers, and so now
he's got a mess on his hand as they as
they try to figure this thing out, and he can't
go to the SEC. I mean, he's restricted by the rules.
So there's only probably five teams that could pay what
he wants in the USC Oregon, Texas Tech, Miami, Miami.
(03:36):
They Miami's got a quarter Carson Beck, but of the
available schools, Orgon said, they're out. U c l A
is that named to watch too. Colorado got a quarterback already,
so it will be this is fasting.
Speaker 1 (03:50):
You know, the best thing, the best thing that could happen, guys,
I think unlikely. But if if all of a sudden
they all said sorry, we're not mating that number and
he ends up taking less to play somewhere else, that's
the best thing that could happen, happens for for the hell,
I think the health of the game, that's probably not likely. Sean, Right,
if he's.
Speaker 3 (04:10):
Good, well, he's still he's still going to get probably
over a million.
Speaker 1 (04:14):
Sure, that's fine because that's the world we live in.
But to try to hold up his university. Uh and
then be successful at it, I think is a very
bad message.
Speaker 3 (04:25):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (04:25):
The other one is James Williams is popping off. What's
with this guy? I thought he was a guy. I
thought we liked this guy.
Speaker 3 (04:31):
Well, James. You know, I'll give James kreb He's always
been pretty outspoken when he was here on the on
the podium. I mean, he a few times we interviewed him.
He's very opinionated and delivers very well when he speaks.
And he's doing the same thing down to Florida State.
Was on an interview with colleague of mine and on
three named Jeff Cameron on war chant dot com on
(04:53):
one of their TV shows that air shows they do.
He just continually goes down this rabbit hole, you know,
comparing talent at Florida State to Nebraska and you know,
using analogy that Ty Robinson how grad he was. But
they got a guy here that makes Ty Robinson look.
Speaker 1 (05:09):
Small, they don't.
Speaker 2 (05:11):
I mean, look, it's I I appreciate that. I like
an articulate, candid guy, but you know you need to say, okay, look,
why would I say something negative about my former place?
Speaker 1 (05:21):
What?
Speaker 2 (05:22):
What is what's in it? For me.
Speaker 3 (05:24):
Okay, I'm going to pick you up off the street.
Speaker 2 (05:27):
Exactly, dude, you were picking I won't say no.
Speaker 1 (05:31):
That's a good point.
Speaker 2 (05:32):
The dude, the dude owes a lot to Nebraska, and
a little ounce of gratitude goes a long way. And
it's just unfortunate he's walking to his views. But this
was just inappropriate.
Speaker 1 (05:44):
Sean. Thanks our Husker insider here. On the last week
of spring practice headed to the festival on Saturday,
