Speaker 1 (00:00):
Joining us for maybe the final time as a TV person.
You're always going to be welcome here, but John Nicely,
who's getting ready to leave television, at least in the
fashion that we know it, welcome, Well, thank you first,
before we get back to how you came up with
a decision. Is there something you're sure you want to do?

(00:20):
That's an excellent question. Do you have any worries that
you'll regret leaving television?

Speaker 2 (00:27):
No, I don't worry about that. Okay, Yeah, I feel soon.
My wife, Sue's been married a long time, so we
were able to talk it over through time.

Speaker 1 (00:36):
And so, yeah, this was the right time. You've been
on Channel six a long time. Actually, you've been there
two times. Yes, you used to be a sports guy.
People are younger audience, man, you may not remember that
you used to be a sports guy. And then you
went away to Saint Louis and came back and did news, right,
that's right.

Speaker 2 (00:53):
Yeah, I started on the weekend anchor for sports just
out of college and then kind of had a long
hear and stuff back then, and yeah, then became a
sports director. I went to Saint Louis and did sports,
came back to Channel seven, and did sports and then
switched to news in nineteen ninety two.

Speaker 1 (01:12):
Well and the rest is they sad. That's when I
met Gina too. Really, yeah, yeah, yes, Gina likes to
talk about her illustrious television career career.

Speaker 3 (01:21):
I thought thought we'd do some hand gestures today.

Speaker 1 (01:25):
Actually what she did was you ran the teleprompter, didn't you?
I did? Yeah, I did? Did you pick it up? Gina?
It will give me one thing to do, give me
one thing. I had an easy job talking with John
nicely for now with with Channel six First Alert six now.
But so how did you come to the decision.

Speaker 2 (01:46):
We have a number of grand kids now, we've got thirteen.
We just had another one fail. So there some of
them are in town, but others are out of town, Dallas,
Saint Louis, Baltimore, and so it opens up the chance
to be with them and see them sporting activities and

(02:08):
school events and things you're not flexible enough to be
able to do.

Speaker 1 (02:12):
So you hear that often to spend especially with athletes,
to spend more time with my family. But this really is.

Speaker 2 (02:18):
Yes, it is yeah, yeah, And it'll be Sue and
I in the evenings which we haven't had in forty
seven years of marriage.

Speaker 3 (02:27):
Crazy, that's going to be weird.

Speaker 1 (02:29):
We should ask her that question.

Speaker 3 (02:32):
Right now. So are you okay?

Speaker 1 (02:34):
I mean okay? Does she seem excited about it?

Speaker 2 (02:40):
I think I should be able to read her by
now and h yeah, I think she's excited about it too. Yeah,
And so we can make those trips and spend time
and not have to worry. And you know, there's deadlines
every day, every day in my life since nineteen seventy four.
That's part of the business. And in fact, was it
deadline to get here in time today because I was

(03:02):
caught in traffic? Yeah, but those are the nightmares I
have too. By the way, I am fifteen minutes away
and I'm supposed to.

Speaker 1 (03:09):
Be on the air. Oh that was happening this morning.
So funny. Well, we're going to give you a second
to think about this because we asked this question this morning.
What's one thing you've done just to say you did?
And you've had such an amazing career, but this is
more of a personal thing. What's the lung thing you
did just to say you did? John Nicely, whether Sue

(03:30):
has been just an icon in local television what's the
thing you're going to miss most about what you do
every day professionally?

Speaker 2 (03:38):
Well, the most, you know what. I enjoy working with
the people I work with, And so it's kind of
the moments on the air when you have a chance off.

Speaker 1 (03:49):
Script to do something right.

Speaker 2 (03:51):
I mean, you guys get to interact every day in
special ways too, so you'd appreciate it. But try to
catch Emily off guard, you know, with the weather question
or something she's not expecting.

Speaker 1 (04:03):
You.

Speaker 3 (04:03):
Guys have fun.

Speaker 1 (04:04):
You've worked with some great people through the years too,
you really.

Speaker 2 (04:07):
Have yes, Yeah, yeah, that The unfortunate thing is I
hold the record for chasing off the most co antors.

Speaker 1 (04:20):
What thing will what thing will you miss the least?
And what you do?

Speaker 2 (04:25):
I would say it's the deadline. Uh, it's the fact
that your work has to be done at this time.
You have to be there and ready to go. And
it's continuous. I mean it's every day, and it's not
just once a day, it's throughout the work day and
then it's hanging over your head the next day. And
if you are doing a special project like a nicely

(04:47):
done story, sometimes that editing gets right to the wire.
It just happened to me like two weeks ago, and
I'm like, can't I manage my time better than But
you finally hit the button send it in, so it's
ready to go and you rush out to the set
and there you go.

Speaker 1 (05:07):
Yeah, so I'm not going to miss that.

Speaker 3 (05:09):
I know, John, that you've had a lot of memorable
moments over the years, a lot of them, but can
you think of one that really stands out to you?

Speaker 1 (05:17):
I have one.

Speaker 2 (05:18):
I'm probably gonna mention it the night that you know
that I sign off. Yeah, And it's a serious story,
but it was an interview with an inmate at the
Nebraska He was on death row the day I went
to interview him. It was a Friday. He found out
while I was waiting to go up that he would
die on Monday. The Supreme Court appeal did not go through,

(05:42):
and so I went to interview him. And it's kind
of a long story, but it was just not what
I expected. It was like total peace when I went in.
And the long story short is when he got arrested
for some horrible crimes way back at a young age,
he didn't really have any faith and but some layperson

(06:04):
came and insisted on letting him into his cell and
shared the Bible with him. Oh, man, and it changed
his life in prison. He developed a ministry himself with
his inmates and across the nation in prisons.

Speaker 1 (06:20):
Wow. If you can imagine that, so changed his life forever. Yes,
I mean eternity.

Speaker 2 (06:25):
And so when I did the interview, he was ready.
He said, my work is done and it's clear.

Speaker 1 (06:31):
And man, that's something it was.

Speaker 2 (06:33):
So that really is just resonated with me for years.

Speaker 1 (06:38):
That's very cool. Yeah, and you've garnered quite the wardrobe
over the years too. I imagine how many suits do
you have hanging in your closet at home? Oh?

Speaker 2 (06:46):
Boy, I'd say what some of them were pretty flashy,
and you know how the styles changed. Sure, I do
remember when I went to Saint Louis and started the job.
It was pretty conservative down there, and the news director
looked at my suits and says, we're going shopping tomorrow.

Speaker 1 (07:08):
Yeah, we're talking with John Nice. We will talk about
what Eliza had as well. Here on cat one of
three point seven, what's your last day on the Channel six?
What's March twelve? March twelfth? Is that they will hang
it up, And boy, I imagine listenership is our viewership
is going to be huge that night. That's it. That's
going to be neat.

Speaker 2 (07:26):
Yeah, and it's a Wednesday night. The next night is
March madness. Oh so I said, well, I don't want
to do it.

Speaker 1 (07:33):
That's going on. Yeah, here I hear more with John
coming up here with Steve and Gina on cat one
of three point seven. There's a little tidbit. I bet
you don't remember. I may have told you this at
some time, but not when I was on a tour
with our college choir. I went to Midland College now
Midland University. Yes, we stayed at at your father's house
in Sydney. Oh my god, my friend and I I

(07:53):
don't know if it was in your bedroom, it was.
It was where we sang in churches, and people from
churches volunteer to have kids stay in their home, and
I stayed in your your father's house.

Speaker 2 (08:05):
That would be my folks would be the kind of
people that would do that.

Speaker 1 (08:09):
Yeah, that's great, But so let's let's talk about afterward.
You said you want to travel and see the family.
But what do you see your days consisting of golf?
I mean, or do you are you gonna Well, let
me ask you this, Are you going to work in
some other capacity? Are you going to retire? Retire? Uh?

Speaker 2 (08:27):
Yeah, I feel like I will be doing something okay,
and what I'm not.

Speaker 1 (08:32):
Sure it would be more than golf.

Speaker 2 (08:34):
Yeah, Like, we go away for two weeks in the
winter and I play golf every day then and I
realize this isn't going to do it.

Speaker 1 (08:41):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (08:41):
I need more purpose in life than right, right, And
so yeah, I've been involved in a number of charities.
I'm on the board of Nebraska Golf Association, and so
I'll be involved in those kinds of things.

Speaker 1 (08:53):
But I feel like there's going to be more. That's
kind of the exciting thing about.

Speaker 3 (08:57):
Well, maybe what Sue tells you to do right your
honey do list will get.

Speaker 1 (09:04):
I hope she's not listening.

Speaker 3 (09:06):
A nice person.

Speaker 1 (09:08):
Well, we were talking earlier about what's one thing we
did just to say we did? Do you have one?

Speaker 2 (09:15):
You know what's difficult about answering that is because of
like I challenged John and yeah, I've done so many things,
and so everything is kind of blocked by those.

Speaker 1 (09:27):
You know one thing I have to ask you about it.
I couldn't believe it did nicely done. Was when they
were building children's the new children's edition, and that that
crane was up in the area. You went up in
that thing. I know, I thought, you're nuts.

Speaker 2 (09:41):
I thought, are you scared of Well, actually no, I am, yeah,
because uh I saw that crane right by traffic. I thought,
who operates this thing? With all of this action going below?
To be so good? And it was really interesting. And
then uh, you know we have that big antenna the station.
Then sure near Benson Golf Course. I went up to

(10:03):
the top of that with the workers and that's twelve
hundred feet.

Speaker 1 (10:06):
That's twice as tall as our towers out there too.
That's yes, uh uh you can imagine. I've seen a
picture from the top of that and the hospital over there. Man,
it looks really little. Real little cars you see are
just like little to man, You've got more guts than
either cool or was it.

Speaker 3 (10:24):
Scary or both both.

Speaker 1 (10:28):
I'm imagining coming up next, this is going to be
a tree and you you you did radio early on right, Yes, yeah,
John's going to do our news coming up moment.

Speaker 3 (10:38):
That would be too much pressure for me to do it.
When he's here.

Speaker 1 (10:41):
Stephen Gina in the morning, Steve Lundy Melton and John
Nicely is joining us this morning. He's getting ready to
leave the television airwaves. Is that what they call it
in television airwaves? Sure? I don't want to get too
technical here, but March twelfth is your last night, right? Yes? Yeah,
I'm kind of wondering because you know, I mean, okay,

(11:03):
I'll I'll admit and i'llbarrass my wife. She's a huge
fan of yours. Yeah, it's been for years. And uh,
are you gonna when you get off TV let your
hair grow, grow your beard? I mean, because you're such
this well groomed, good looking guy, movie star type. Are
you just gonna let it go for a while? You know?

Speaker 2 (11:21):
I would grow up beard if I could. But I
can't even grow beard.

Speaker 1 (11:25):
Really.

Speaker 2 (11:28):
I've got two of our twins. They both can grow
a beard in two days.

Speaker 1 (11:32):
Really. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (11:33):
Yeah, and the other males in our family can't. Well anyway,
so I won't be doing.

Speaker 1 (11:39):
That, okay, all right, Yeah, Well this is this is fun. John.
Originally you were telling a soft microphone before you went
a TV. You worked in Lincoln and radio for a
while out of school. Yes, And so John's gonna do
Genus News here for her.

Speaker 3 (11:54):
Thank goodness, too much pressure.

Speaker 1 (11:58):
We're just gonna ask him to do two stories. All right, So,
ladies and gentlemen, with Steph and Ginet in the morning,
let's check in with John nicely.

Speaker 2 (12:06):
First question is do I have to look at my
co anchor?

Speaker 1 (12:09):
No? No, you?

Speaker 2 (12:15):
And by the way you gave me reading glasses, I
really appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (12:18):
Sure.

Speaker 2 (12:19):
Elon Musk will have a year at the Trump administration
table a seat there. The White House confirmed that Musk
will take part in President Trump's first cabinet meeting later
on today and he will provide an update on how
the cabinet secretaries are identifying waste and government fraud. They
may have a special report on Stephen Gina as well.

(12:42):
New and expecting moms are being urged to be screened
for depression and anxiety. American Heart Association recommends hospitals and
healthcare providers screen for depression and anxiety during an up
and one year to after pregnancy. Doctor say psychological conditions
during that time span are among the leading causes of

(13:02):
maternal death in the US. They also have a special
report on anxiety on the golf course. Steve is featured
in that stuff. Ever, I like that you came up
with Aron off the cuff. There, very good. John Nicely

(13:24):
in news, nicely done. Here's Gina with our Smile File
story which will bring you every morning at this time.

Speaker 3 (13:34):
Oh, this is really neat this young man. He's fourteen
years old. He actually came up with this app called
Pizza for a Purpose, which connects local restaurants in Florida
with charities to donate pizzas to those in need. Fourteen
Can you believe that they have eleven restaurants that are
participating right now, but he hopes to expand that and

(13:54):
add more restaurants and add more charities.

Speaker 1 (13:57):
See, the world is in good hands, got good kids
out there. Way to put it, Yeah, for sure, and
that's why it makes our Smile File. One final break
with John Nicely coming up. John Nicely has been our guest.
Is sur John maybe you've heard is going to retire
from television on March twelfth on the Channel six after
how many years have you been in Oha television? Now

(14:17):
all the day and now total? It's fifty years? Wow? Agree,
that was in Saint Louis. That's impossible when you look
fifty five to have been in television fifty years.

Speaker 2 (14:28):
Yeah, I thought usually put on my makeup until the afternoon.

Speaker 1 (14:34):
I put it on this morning. I bet you. I
bet you won't miss that part of it, will you. No? Yeah,
mine's pretty simple.

Speaker 2 (14:40):
If I had to do everything else that others yeah.

Speaker 1 (14:45):
Different. And I bet you have a great suit collection though.
I think I have ass suit that. I bet you've
got an amazing suit.

Speaker 3 (14:53):
You know, what are you gonna do for casual clothes?

Speaker 1 (14:55):
Do you have any casual clothes?

Speaker 2 (14:57):
I do, believe me, Yes, I do. Well, yeah, I'm
color blind.

Speaker 1 (15:02):
Oh are you really? Yes?

Speaker 2 (15:05):
Yes, Well, you talk about suits. You know, how do
I know what tie to go with it? Right?

Speaker 1 (15:10):
I leave them tied.

Speaker 2 (15:11):
I just loosen them, take them off around my neck,
and they hang on the hangar for that suit? So
maybe have ten choices on each.

Speaker 1 (15:20):
That's pretty smart. Oh wow, did I wear that one
this last week? I wear this one.

Speaker 3 (15:26):
I always wondered about that. If you had to, like
keep a calendar or something, I should.

Speaker 1 (15:30):
Yeah. Well, I think guys get away with it more
than women do. Yeah, you're absolutely right. Yeah, Well, I
want to see a couple of things. First. My wife
is going to be devastating when you leave. She's a
huge fan of yours and what we all are. Yes,
but the way you've handled your career with integrity is
just it's it's second to none. I know you're a
great man of faith and you live that faith, but

(15:52):
you also are a fair man. And what I like,
and Gina and I were talking about this is to
watch you on television, you wouldn't know what your political
persuasion is. And I like that. You know, you deliver
the information. Yeah, and we appreciate that.

Speaker 2 (16:08):
Well, thank you. Yeah, and it's it should be that way. Yeah,
we were taught that in j school. You know, you're objective,
you're not subjective, and bring both sides of the story
and people at home will make their decisions. Sure, it's
not for someone on TV to make a decision for you.

Speaker 3 (16:27):
Maybe you should be training others.

Speaker 2 (16:32):
And journalism today, especially on the national scene, no doubt.

Speaker 1 (16:36):
Well, thank you for coming in. This is This has
been a lot of fun and we'll we'll keep in touch,
but we will miss you on television. Well, thank you.

Speaker 2 (16:44):
And I want to say it's just been fun to
be with you, guys. I've been I'm with you before
I think for children's hospital. But you know, if your audience,
if your listeners could come in and spend the time
that I get to experience, they would love it. I mean,
you are genuine and you're you work so well together.

Speaker 1 (17:03):
You're pros.

Speaker 2 (17:04):
So I'm glad I had a chance to say that before.

Speaker 1 (17:06):
Oh thank you.

Speaker 2 (17:08):
Today and congrats on your success. You've been, you know,
getting the achievement awards that you deserve.

Speaker 1 (17:15):
So oh well, thank you very kind of U. Do
you have one last thing You're gonna not here? But
do you know what you're going to say the last
night or is you just gonna go off the cuff.

Speaker 2 (17:25):
I'll tell you one. I'm gonna make it pretty simple.
But I'm going to share one message from my first
news director because one day I went away for a
week on vacation. I came back with a mustache and
so I wore it on the air that night, and

(17:48):
the next day on my desk was a note from
the news director John just in my family loan. The
vote is four to one, the mustache goes. I save
that note, so I'm going.

Speaker 1 (18:03):
To show that John. Well, thank you man. It's been
It's been an honor and you've you've served this community
in the area well through the years on television. I hope
you enjoy your retirement. Thank you.

Speaker 2 (18:15):
We have such a great community. We really do blessing
to be to raise your family here.

Speaker 1 (18:19):
John nicely
