Speaker 1 (00:00):
I did TJ. Miller for Flying Brian and Brittany Pyeay.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
What's up buddy? How are We're alive on the air
right now? How are you?
Speaker 1 (00:08):
I love it? I'm great, guys, Thanks for having me.
How are you doing? Man?
Speaker 2 (00:12):
I'm so happy that you called him.
Speaker 3 (00:13):
We were actually just talking about you and I was
talking about how big of a fan I am, and
we were talking about the last time that you were
at the Off the Hook Comedy Club. And I don't
know if you remember this, and this was one of
my favorite moments in comedy. Actually, you own a couple
of my favorite moments in comedy, and I'll get to
the other one a minute. But this last time at
the Off the Hook Comedy Club, there was a guy
(00:34):
that was sitting like right in the front, and the
way that the tables in the stage was, this guy
was like you could literally have stepped on his table,
like it was like right there, right right next to you,
and he was laughing throughout the night. And you had
opined that he sounded like a bear, and you went
through this whole thing as if a bear had actually
(00:55):
snuck into a comedy show, and what he would do
to act as a human being. And then you asked
him his name, and his name was Barry, and I
literally fell out of my chair.
Speaker 1 (01:04):
Yeah, oh my god, do you remember that? Remember that?
Speaker 2 (01:07):
That was awesome.
Speaker 3 (01:08):
That was some of the funniest like just riffing from
the stage off the top of the dome, that I've
ever seen in my entire life. I was I had
tears out of my eyes, like my stomach hurt.
Speaker 2 (01:19):
I was dying.
Speaker 1 (01:21):
Hey man. Two things. First of all, I rarely remember
stuff because I improvised so much all the time. Yeah,
but two things. One, I remember that, and it was
so funny because and the audience knew this. I did
the whole thing of him being a bear. Sometimes people go,
oh that that was a plant or he knew that
(01:41):
guy was gonna, you know, whatever it is. And then
when when I found out his name was Barry, right,
I lost my you know what stressful radio and people
could tell they were like, oh my god, this is
actually improvised. Tea is laughing harder we've even seen him
(02:03):
at all. And that was such a crazy Clinton really happened.
And then the second thing I wanted to say is
I can't believe you use the word opine. But Brian,
I'm flying. You're vocabulary really exciting.
Speaker 3 (02:18):
I have some good ones every once in a while,
you know, yeah, every once in a while.
Speaker 1 (02:22):
Yeah, you just get him in their surreptitiously. I'm excited
because of the is like off the Hook is really
one of those places where anything can happen and intimate
kind of place the club itself, and so you really
I am able to do that and I talk to
somebody in the front. Everyone can kind of see them,
(02:44):
and you just you can tell that I'm improvising and
and I think people love it and I love it too.
I was I'm performing in Sarasota right now, huh. And
somebody said, wow, you too are a lot lot and
I say, yeah, they Does it ever get sort of monotonous? No,
because unlike my other comedians, I'm not sort of getting
(03:05):
up there doing my routine. The most exciting thing is
I came up with a new joke about how anesoda is,
you know, as they drink a lot of soda or whatever.
Speaker 4 (03:16):
That's that's not me, right, I simplied that, Wow, exactly,
that's not really, that's not really me.
Speaker 1 (03:22):
I'm kind of between fifty seventy percent of my material
last night. I mean it was my act last night.
I did. I would say two jokes in the entire show,
the rescue, And I had a wireless mike last night. Whoa, whoa.
Speaker 2 (03:44):
That leads to a lot of fun. Now you can
move around a lot.
Speaker 1 (03:48):
Yeah. Then I just went into the audience and I
went to this guy. I have two shots that I
have brought on stage to sort of talk to one
of the servers and you know, really talk about how
hard everybody is working and that you know, you should
tip a little bit more than you were going to.
And so she breaks the shots and I take the
shot with my favorite audience member. But this guy in
(04:11):
the back, I was in the middle of talking about
something else and this guy is like, take the shot.
I was like, okay, first of all, weird, bully move.
I'm going to take the shot. I'll do it on
my time. It'd be weird if I had two shots
up here and I left them up there and then
(04:31):
coming to the stage. So I went and so I
went to the audience to go and see who this
guy was, and oh my god, you know, I just
he had a man bun look. He looked totally ridiculous.
But people in people in herinsota sort of, they can
(04:53):
get touchy if they think you're being mean. So I
found out last night about that crowd. I'm sure making
fun of him just a little bit. And I realized,
well when I said to the audience, go, whoa, guys,
I'm just like teasing him. I don't like keep back
on the stage, did you know, to the rest of
my act. And at the end, I said, okay, you
know what, just because Sarrisodi guys are a little touchy,
(05:16):
I go, I'm I am going to take the shot,
and I'm going to take it with the man. Bun
come on stage. And he came up on stage and
oh my gosh, he gets on stage and he demand
Bun was the least of his worry. You look ridiculous.
He was wearing a shirt that looked like a doily,
(05:39):
like a country home. It was so funny, and so
everybody was laughing and laughing at his appearance. And I go,
look at that. Look he's making fun of him. Now, audience,
I didn't anything about him. You guys are cracking up
at his general appearance. And I talked to him. I
talked to him and He was such a nice guy,
and we took the shot and he wanted to do
(06:01):
the thing where you interlock arms when you take god whatever,
that's oh boy. And so it was great. And that's
that's sort of I never know how the show's gone.
Speaker 2 (06:11):
You never know.
Speaker 1 (06:12):
That's why people see multiple shows of mine weekend. I
met a couple of people last night. We're coming to
your show tomorrow, man, were so exciting.
Speaker 2 (06:19):
Oh my god.
Speaker 1 (06:20):
Yeah, I go to bring that guy with demand for real.
Speaker 3 (06:23):
Yeah, in his doily shirt. That's the other thing I
saw you. I saw you every time you come anywhere
near here. I'm guaranteed I'm always going to be, you know,
in the crowd for sure, one hundred percent. You were
at Vesani and Port Charlotte. This was like a couple
of years back, and you did like thirty five minutes
hilarious thirty five minutes too, not like a comic is
up there and like really trying to make it funny
(06:44):
and struggling for thirty five minutes with like some.
Speaker 2 (06:47):
Moments of brilliance.
Speaker 3 (06:48):
No, no, no, this was thirty five minutes straight hilarious of
a tiki bar that you visited that day, Like you
were there that day and that night you did thirty
five minutes really funny minutes on that exact place.
Speaker 2 (07:00):
It was hilarious.
Speaker 1 (07:02):
Thanks man. Yeah, I do try and whatever kind of
happened during the day, I talk about, Yeah, yesterday I
want to try and you know, maybe check into this hotel.
And I didn't know anything about it, but on Leedo Island, Yo. Yeah,
but there was just a lot of sort of wreckage
and they were cleaning everything up. And the only thing
(07:23):
I said about it is that I was like, I go, Yeah,
I went by Leeder Island. I was going to check
into this hotel that I ended up saying close to
the club, and then I paused you to feal. Everybody
was like, what is he going to say? And I'm
like and then ten minutes of hurricane material that I'm
not gonna do. All right, got it. I moved on completely.
(07:45):
They sort of loved it because it was kind of
on their mind. They were like, is TJ gonna riff
about this? Yeah? What is he say? And It's like, now,
I'm not really talking about that. Tomorrow, I'm going to
talk about I came back and had a drink last
night at the hotel bar at the end of the
night and just the bartender and then the guy that
(08:07):
walked in. It was the most ridiculous conversation I've had
in a long time, probably talking about that tonight, because
it was like two guys. It was like this black
guy who travels all the time, and he and I
talked about that he works, his job was really interesting.
And then this white dude from Nashville, Tennessee who was
(08:28):
so awkward and excitable and definitely probably most likely on cocaine. Yeah,
the interaction between him and this other dude and me
was like clearly and all we were talking about was
different types of bourbon. It's really funny to be around
(08:49):
guys that know a lot about bourbon, because it's fascinating
and then really irritating and then annoying and then kind
of fascinating again, like that I hate these guys. Wow,
these guys know a lot about Burman. Oh my god,
is this guy from Nashville going to say another vaguely
(09:10):
racist thing and then have the other guy and make
fun of him to his faith and him not. Anyway,
it's very I will do something during the day for
like thirty minutes about it. If it strikes me. And
that's another thing too. I think people, I just I
really can feel that people, even that guy. I asked
(09:32):
that guy last night on stage, the doily guy. I
was like, well, it's your favorite part of the show
and he was like, damn bron. I was like, oh, thanks, man,
that was Did you have any special moments in the show?
There he goes the improv and like, Okay, I'm not
gonna ask you more questions, but I think of the answers.
But you know, he was. It was really cool because
(09:55):
he would everyone in the audiences like, wow, this show
is like special for TJ. And you're right. I didn't. Well,
it's special for me, but it's special for the audience.
Ever gonna do it. And my favorite thing too is
just being able to I don't know. I love meeting
people afterwards and kind of being like, you know, what
did you like? What was your favorite part of the
(10:16):
show or what wasn't And people always say, you know,
it's just really crazy that you improvised so much, and
like you said, I don't it's not really crowd work.
Hey are you married? Hey, it's not those stock questions
and then answers for I mean jokes that I do
(10:37):
for different people, you know, and I have these sort
of lines that I have locked and loaded. It's just
I just want to see where the show goes. And
that's why.
Speaker 2 (10:47):
So completely personalized.
Speaker 3 (10:49):
And it's not like you're like really making fun of anybody.
It's just that these people are becoming part of the story.
It's because you know that you're telling on stage and
it's it's all so funny, and that's why people, you know,
love it, because you know you're not like just bagging
on somebody just for the sake of bagging on somebody.
It's it's it's crafted very well when you do it,
and it always comes back around, and it always comes
(11:11):
from the heart, you know, and people get that. And
I think that's why it works so well is because
it's not it's not hateful. You're not like you're not
like punching down at anybody, you know what I mean.
Speaker 1 (11:21):
No, definitely not except for Off the Comedy Clik because of.
Speaker 2 (11:25):
The name exactly.
Speaker 3 (11:27):
And by the way, the promo that you did for
that with all the different with the with the hook,
where all the things that you're putting on the hook
and then taking off the hook was one of the
funniest promos I've ever seen for a comedy show.
Speaker 1 (11:38):
Yeah, you know, I saw He's sort of where I
am Kate as my wife Kate. Kate came home like
doing her art stuff overseas, and she came back and
she goes, why is there a giant hook and every
seat in our kitchen? And I was like, what, he goes, TJ,
(11:58):
what do you mean? What do I mean? Why there's
a giant hook in the kitchen with the receipt? How
could you not know what I was?
Speaker 4 (12:06):
It's not my hook, so it's your hook. I don't
think somebody else brought it the house rep a hook,
because why is there a hook and receiving there? I go, oh,
I did this promo for off the Hook.
Speaker 1 (12:20):
And she's like, of course, okay, weird. Why is there
a receipt? And I go, well, I'm returning the.
Speaker 3 (12:26):
Hook, turn it in, get make Captain Brian pay for it.
Speaker 1 (12:34):
Yeah, exactly right, I can spend that. Do you realize
how crazy that you found out that you were like, well,
obviously I'm going to return the hook. I go, why
are we going to keep a hook that size? All right?
You keep saying crazier, crazier thing. Thank you for being
(12:56):
thank you for being price conscious and sprouval about your book.
Speaker 2 (13:00):
Right exactly. It looks a ridiculous conversation I have to have.
Speaker 1 (13:06):
Well, can you imagine what an incredible woman he's married,
this guy who's talking hooks and returning them.
Speaker 2 (13:12):
Right, buying hooks.
Speaker 1 (13:15):
Videos herself is off the hook.
Speaker 2 (13:18):
I love that. How long have you been married? Now,
you guys been married for a little while now.
Speaker 1 (13:22):
Yeah, we know each other from college on time, and
then we dated about sort of off and on, either
dating or friends for uh well, from two thousand and three.
So we've been married. She and I always forget. It's
like we have to look it up online, but it's
like nine years. Maybe Wow, it's either almost ten or
(13:46):
it's nine. I guess it's the same thing. Way to
go to TJ, right. But yeah, I mean I think
we've beencause we also sort of don't tell anybody, especially
none of your listeners, right, get down on it. But
we elope. Oh, I thought that was cool because we
had this wedding plan and then one day she was
(14:10):
sort of I don't know, she was kind of flipping
out about everything. I can't imagine really being a woman
in the wedding process. Was so much pressure from your family.
Oh my god, there's so much expectation and for yourself,
and people are like, whoa bride? Zilla and I had
really really put under a lot of pressure and social
(14:32):
context and everything. So I said her, listen, let's go
and get married, right. She was like, we're gonna get married. No,
let's just go. You and I let's go upstate. We
were living in Los Angeles, so we went to Big
sur and I said, let's just go and do this
just for us. We'll have the wedding and that, but
that's about everybody else, as you and I have talked about.
(14:54):
I mean, I'm talking to Kate right now. It'll be
funny if flying Brian and I talked about the expectations
for family and wedding and uh and I so, let's
just kind of go in and do this on our
own inabit for us. And she was really cool. She
was like, I think that sounds really sweet and romantic,
and let's do it. And so we went up there
and we had this kind of wedding that was, you know,
(15:16):
just for us and really sweet. Was the two of us,
and this really. We went to Big Stirt, so they're
all weirdos up there. The name of our officiant was Soaring.
Let's let's take that in s O A R I
n G was her name Wow, which loves into crystals
and weird stuff.
Speaker 2 (15:37):
We love our crystal girlies.
Speaker 1 (15:42):
Yeah, yeah, right exactly. But that's kind of fun, Brittany,
you know that. And so we we had this really
really romantic, uh sort of ceremony and it was right
on the cliff, and then I proceeded to get so
dry and the next day we woke up and it's like, dude,
(16:05):
you got so drunk lass night and it was really sweet.
She was like, I mean, do you like not want
to get married? And I go no, I think I
was just really nervous and it just kind of came
out in that way and she's like okay, and I
was like, you know what, this is great though, because
at our actual wedding, I am going to just straight
(16:26):
uply right and you'll see it's going to be you know,
I just won't drink that much. And so then cut
to our wedding and Kate got completely blasted. But it
was really really fun to kind of do it on
your own and I sort of recommended that to a
lot of people. Where got this wedding and the girl's
(16:48):
going crazy with expectations and stuff, or even if as
a guy you're kind of like, whoa, this is really.
Speaker 2 (16:55):
Heavy and.
Speaker 1 (16:58):
Courthouse each and then. And Kate loved it because it
was like a secrets like, don't tell any of the
family that we got married without them, Like, okay, Kate,
I don't think they would care.
Speaker 2 (17:10):
But TJ.
Speaker 3 (17:15):
Miller is our guest and you can see him at
the Off the Hook Comedy Club.
Speaker 2 (17:19):
I got to well, you're getting you're gonna be there?
What you're gonna be there tomorrow? Is it Friday?
Speaker 1 (17:24):
Yeah? Friday and Saturday? Because I'm in Sarasota right now.
Once you last night two shows tonight, all those are
sold out and the tickets are moving. I would give
the tickets today immediately if you're gonna come on Saturday.
But Off the Hook is really great. I don't know,
it's really really fun. They also have great food, which
is at Crazy Club, so it's fun there and you
(17:47):
can eat drink there. And yeah, if you sit in
the front row and your name is Barry, get ready.
Speaker 2 (17:54):
Do get ready?
Speaker 3 (17:55):
And TJ. You've got a new comedy album out. It's
called Smooth Peanut Butter. People can get that wherever they
get their better podcasts and music and comedy album and
stuff like that. Anywhere you get music and stuff, you
can get Smooth Peanut Butter. You also have your own
line of Peanut Butter, which is crazy and great. And
of course three specials that you can stream right now.
You can find them the way that I like to
(18:16):
liken it. You know, when you see a TJ. Miller special,
is that thank God that the camera was rolling and
just happened to catch that hour, You know what I'm saying, Like,
that's kind of what it is, because, like you were saying,
your shows are different every single night, and it's a
lot of improvisation, and so you know, to be able
to catch these and have them for people to be
able to watch is really really cool. So you can
stream TJ specials, you can get the albums, and you
(18:39):
can check out, of course, all of the movies and
shows that you've been on My Friend, You've been in
so many different things. Of course, Silicon Valley was great
off his Christmas party Transformers for Cloverfield.
Speaker 2 (18:51):
Our Idiot Brother, Yogi.
Speaker 3 (18:52):
Bear, Ready Player one, the stand in Deadpool one and two,
the superior of the two of the film's been in
my opinion, Emoji movie, Big Here, How to Train Your
Dragon one and two. Like, you've just been in so
many things. Are you working on any other acting projects?
Speaker 1 (19:08):
Yeah? The next thing that I'm doing is really gonna
be a dream come true. It's another Christmas movie, but
with less cocaine, and it's and yeah, it's really really exciting.
I can't talk about it a ton, but basically we
think we're engaged in talking to and it's a movie
that I wrote with a buddy of mine who's a
(19:30):
genius to be sure, and again it's a Christmas film,
and then again can't but the person that we're engaged
with who might produce it is he's one of my
idols as a kid and probably one of the biggest
people in animation of all time. And see him may
and I'm talking about but I'm really excited about that.
And it's so different too. This is what I wanted
(19:51):
to do my entire life as a kid. I wanted
to do stand up comedy and then write movies that
I was a star of. Yeah, directing.
Speaker 2 (20:00):
I love it.
Speaker 1 (20:01):
That's what we're doing. But making a movie is so different.
And I'm talking about a twenty million dollar film, like
a studio.
Speaker 2 (20:08):
Big movie, right.
Speaker 1 (20:09):
Making a movie is so different from being in one.
You just as you as you do the process of
this of the script, and it takes years. Oh and
you just you forget that. As an actor. You come
to the cass you you come in and you just
do this job. But there's been years of preparation beforehand.
And one time, I think it was my mother or
(20:31):
someone in my family was like, boy, you've been working
on that a long time and kind of being like,
I mean, is this thing ever going to happen? I
kind of went I'm like, yeah, imagine if you were
trying to ask for twenty million dollars, do you think
that that would be difficult to do? And I saw
sort of understand, like, and it's also you're asking for
(20:53):
twenty million dollars for your imagination or like dream, I
have this dream that this will work. You give me
twenty million dollars, more money than anybody really makes in
their entire life.
Speaker 2 (21:05):
People in the passion and yeah.
Speaker 1 (21:07):
And then they really totally that's exactly right. Why aren't
doing more of my family gatherings.
Speaker 2 (21:14):
I'll set your mom straight.
Speaker 1 (21:16):
I love that just saw that they stand the verbiage. Yeah,
probably it'll probably opine that you're trying to do something
more than just absolutely. But I've got back on and
then we just I'm working with a very, very talented
director on this independent series that I wrote. It was
(21:37):
sort of about the pandemic, but I think now it's
going to be more about the death of mall culture.
But he was I like it. It's I get my
job back at a movie theater during the pandemic, but
I'm I'm the only one that's hired back, and so
it's just me in this thirty screen megaplex. It's all
based on a real situation I had in Salt Lake
(21:58):
City in twenty twenty, and it's called the Loneliest Megaplex.
But it's one of those it's a comedy that has
a little bit more substance to it, and there's kind
of a little bit there's a tinge of sadness, but
I call them comedies of substance. But the Christmasy is
just straight up fun. Great because it's eging thirteen, so
for it's for kids.
Speaker 2 (22:17):
Awesome.
Speaker 1 (22:19):
I really appreciate what you said. Like, I have a
special streaming right now called Dear Jonah on my YouTube channel,
and that's one where I was doing all this material
on the pandemic and then this kid in the front row.
I asked him a question and it was kind of
a mind blowing response, and then I went on to
really talk to him and about him throughout the show,
(22:40):
and the show became kind of lifting this kid up
who sort of has some developmental stuff or something in
but I sort of made him the star. And so
that's what it's called Dear Jonah. But you're right, that's
the moment where I got off stage went backstage. Kate
was backstage and she's like, dude, I think you need
to make the special the show and the director ran backstage.
(23:01):
He's like, I'm going to make a pitch for the
entire special. What we just thought?
Speaker 2 (23:05):
Absolutely.
Speaker 1 (23:05):
I was like, yeah, yeah, that's the first thing I
thought when I got up stage. And that was the
I just locked another special called The Philosophy Circus, which
has a lot of circus in it.
Speaker 2 (23:15):
I like it exciting, I love it.
Speaker 1 (23:18):
Yeah, the audience plays the trombone and I do a
lot of juggling stuff and that's really fun. So that'll
be coming out probably in the next probably in the
beginning of next year. And then I filmed another special
called The Gentle Giant in San Diego, and that's all
stories and just stuff, autobiographical stuff and about me and
my brain injury and man, all that kind of stuff.
(23:38):
But that's that's a really fun one too, and that'll
be forthcoming.
Speaker 2 (23:41):
I love it.
Speaker 1 (23:42):
But boy, you made me feel so good about myself, dude, Brian.
I think, Brian, you and I are best friends. And
it's so weird that I like Britney Moore.
Speaker 3 (23:54):
That's all right, I'll deal with it, you know, as
long as we're best friends. TJ, it's okay. But you're
the best man for real. We are huge, huge fans
of your your your comedy for sure, because of all
the different directions that it goes in and all of
it is just so great and so funny. And your
acting work and you know, the stuff that you're doing
on social media is so funny. Just you are so
(24:14):
creative and so great with a huge heart too, which
is very very very evident in everything that you do.
And we just appreciate knowing you and having you on
the show. When you come to town.
Speaker 1 (24:24):
All right, that's it. You have to go to one
of the shows and I'm going to give you a
very very big hug, but my left hand will be
over and so yours, because if you put your left
hand over.
Speaker 2 (24:33):
When you hug, it's I will be there. I'll probably
see you tomorrow night. I'll be there.
Speaker 1 (24:38):
I love it. Okay, Greattany Yeah you're invited too, but
sometimes people know that you've had enough of flying Brian
right quickly come to a separate show.
Speaker 2 (24:50):
Yes, please do.
Speaker 3 (24:51):
There are four now tickets to four shows available, but
all of them are going to be sold out, So
everybody needs to go to Off Thehookcomedy dot com.
Speaker 2 (24:59):
The great t J Miller he is going to be
in town tomorrow night.
Speaker 3 (25:01):
There are two shows six thirty and eight thirty, and
then Saturday six and eight o'clock and that is he
