Speaker 2 (00:27):
All right, doc fans, We're back here at Moss Bay
Hall in Kirkland, right here on ninety three three KJRFM.
Husky Talk Postgame Show brought to you by Chevy Silverado.
Bring on the tough stuff, baby, because with nine trims
and four available engines, Chevy Silverado is ready to accept
all challenges. Greg and I are already hitting the tough stuff,
by the way, to try and get through what we

(00:49):
just saw.

Speaker 3 (00:50):
Yes, tough glass of water, hero, Yeah, wo'chs a little
brown to me, but.

Speaker 4 (00:55):
Water here's a little rusty.

Speaker 2 (00:56):
Well, that was something you know long enough, and you
see things that you never thought you'd see before, right,
whether in you know, politics, entertainment, sports, whatever, And that's
certainly was something I never thought we'd see Washington out
gains Rutgers by two hundred and twenty two yards five
hundred and twenty one to two hundred and ninety nine,

(01:17):
and they lose.

Speaker 5 (01:18):
The game twenty one to eighteen.

Speaker 2 (01:21):
Per our Buddy Tony castra Cone fellas, it's the first
time since nineteen seventy four that U dub has outgained
their opponent by such a margin and lost.

Speaker 5 (01:31):
You're looking at a guy that was one year old.

Speaker 2 (01:33):
When that happened way back in nineteen seventy four. And
a twenty three to nine loss to the Oregon State
Beavers doesn't make it any less painful because Washington in
a lot of ways, completely dominated Rutgers in this game,
and once again, for the second time in three weeks,
loses a football game because of mistakes that they made
on their side. I mean, where do you want to begin, guys.

(01:56):
Three miss field goals by Grady Gross. First time in
his life he's missed two field goals in a game,
let alone three. You get a second and goal from
the four yard line and you settle for nothing. You
block a field goal that gets called back because redshirt
freshman Vincent Holmes leaves the bench during a live play

(02:18):
and the block gets overturned. The very next play, Rutgers
scores a touchdown. We got penalties after penalty after penalty.
We got mistakes, we got timeouts out of injury timeouts.
We've got defense not getting off the field in very
manageable situations third and long for the Rutgers offense. I mean,
this was in a lot of ways of disgrace on

(02:41):
both sides of the ball.

Speaker 5 (02:42):
And from the sideline. So where do we start?

Speaker 4 (02:45):
Greg?

Speaker 3 (02:45):
Go ahead, Well, I can go down the list and
show you all the categories that the Huskies won total yards,
passing yards, rushing yards yards per play, first downs, Everything
lines up with the Huskies winning the football game. There
was three critical ears is where they did not win.
Third down efficiency. We were two for twelve. They were
seven for fifteen, and a lot of those were in

(03:08):
plus plus defensive advantage where they were more than six
yards that they needed to get in order to get
the first down.

Speaker 4 (03:15):
Penalties six for sixty nine.

Speaker 3 (03:18):
Not only were they six for sixty nine, but they
were at such critical times. It just really hampered the
Huskies and then special teams. We missed three field goals today,
two of them really that I'm gonna, you know, really
put on Grady Gross that last one tough, long distance
in the rain, a lot of time, I mean very
little time, so a lot of pressure. But this team

(03:40):
continues and I know we've only lost these two games,
and you know, talk about losing because of penalties, but
even last week where we won the game only because
that team was so bad. The amount of undisciplined plays
that this team makes in critical situations is just a
huge issue for them. And if they don't get that fixed,

(04:01):
there're gonna be other times that we're at the end
of the game sad.

Speaker 4 (04:05):
We could have won this game.

Speaker 3 (04:06):
We're better than records, We're better than Washington State, right,
But both of those games were lost because of mistakes
that we created. We lose Washington State because of one
yard where we couldn't get in. We lose this one
three points of field goal at the end. But really
the real issue is we're not good enough to win
when we make that many mistakes.

Speaker 6 (04:23):
This team looks like a team that's just been put
together in the past six seven months, and that's what
they are. We got full maybe a little bit those
first few games when we didn't have many penalties and
we won and had a lesser opponent. These two games
that we lost, we should have won both of them.
The penalties that we're getting are just like costly penalties.

Speaker 7 (04:42):
They're coming at times where we just cannot have them.

Speaker 6 (04:45):
If you're gonna have personal fouls on second and two,
and you have personal fouls when you're trying to score. Again,
I thought coach was doing a great job with the
play calling early, mixing it up on the first and
second downs, but the red zone again.

Speaker 7 (04:59):
Was and the thing I talked about the defense.

Speaker 6 (05:03):
The defense played okay, but on third down, if you're
playing man, you're gonna have to get pressure. We've been
talking about getting pressure all season long. We cannot get
any pressure. Even when we're trying to blitz. We're getting
a little pressure our defense. I think Greg said it
at halftime. Our defensive backs are gonna get beat sometimes
if you're going man to man, and that's what was
happening on our crucial third downs.

Speaker 3 (05:24):
Yeah, if you want to talk about you know X's
and oo's kind of thing on what you know is
a big issue here. Other than the penalties, it's really
that inability to score when we're in the.

Speaker 4 (05:36):
Red zone and not just the red zone.

Speaker 3 (05:38):
I think our ten plus which means ten yards an
end offense, is really really not effective right now. And
you you know, sometimes we talk about bringing the young
kid in at inopportunity times. Maybe that's where we need
to focus his skill set and abilities when we get
in that ten yard line and in giving the defense

(05:58):
a different look making something happened with the quarterback moving around.
I don't know, I'm just throwing that out there, Mario,
because right now, that ten yard and n offense, whether
we're running the ball, I mean, the first time we
tried to red zona two times and we got nothing.
Then we had to throw it o third down, didn't score.
Other times we're throwing the ball and guys not open.
We had a bench route we ran which is a

(06:19):
two yard right at the goal line. Didn't make the catch.
The ball just hit off the player's hands. So I
think right now, if you want to talk about schematically
or x's and o's or game plan kind of stuff, again, Mario,
you're right, we got to get pass rush on third
and long, So third and long we can't give him
that much time. And on the ten plus yard line

(06:40):
down in the red zone. We gotta score touchdowns, and
inexplicably one of the things we talked about that was
a strength of this team.

Speaker 4 (06:48):
Even after the Washington State game. I remember saying this myself.

Speaker 3 (06:51):
We got to point this team to the positives, even
though we lost this game. And one of the things
I said was, what we got a kicker who's automatic. Well,
right now he's automatically not making some critical kicks and
today was you know, two very makeable and the last
one he had enough leg It was a high snap
on that one.

Speaker 4 (07:08):
So maybe that throughout the time a little bit was
white left.

Speaker 3 (07:10):
But right now Grady Gross is not the same guy
he was throughout last year at the beginning this year.

Speaker 6 (07:16):
I just don't like our offensive energy. You say we
have an identity of playoffs. I did just say it's
the best. I just said we have one though. Right
we did a play action on second and fourteen, Like,
how are we doing a play action? They didn't bite
on the run. Why are you even putting that in motion? Like,
I don't like that. Jonah comes out Like every three.

Speaker 7 (07:36):
Series, we have a different back come in.

Speaker 6 (07:38):
I don't like the quarterback swishing. I don't think we
have a great continuity on anything. No, I think I
just don't think we have a direction, like we know
what we're doing. I thought we came out great, but
again we talked about it. When we get in the
goal line, then we don't know what.

Speaker 3 (07:54):
To do, so you feel like we're just trying stuff.
We don't have a you know, this is what we
go to, this is who we are, this.

Speaker 4 (08:00):
Is how we score. When we're down to that end,
we're just trying stuff.

Speaker 6 (08:04):
An example of that is you talk about Denzel. Denzel
didn't have a catch in the first half. In the
next second half he might have had nine for one
hundred yards. That's almost impossible. We talked about pregame Giles
Jackson not having the type of game that he had
two weeks ago last week and then he disappeared in
the second half. Like, we don't have any type of

(08:24):
play calling that gets some guys to borrow or a direction.

Speaker 2 (08:29):
Ah, I agree with everything Mario just said. And you
just asked, Mario, you know you just don't like anything
right now? Well, I mean, honestly, guys overall, like what's
there to like? I mean, you've beaten Eastern Michigan, Weber
Maype in Northwestern.

Speaker 7 (08:46):
I guess we should be.

Speaker 4 (08:48):
We should be.

Speaker 2 (08:49):
I mean if we're talking about, you know, little incremental
things that may show themselves as a positive later in
the year.

Speaker 8 (08:55):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (08:56):
Look, I mean Will Rogers obviously, Jonah Coleman, Denzel Boston,
Jiles accident.

Speaker 4 (09:01):
There's good players on this football.

Speaker 2 (09:03):
Team, and hopefully they can clean this up right away
and start winning games next week. But right now you're
in a hole that you really, let's face it, have
no business being it. Yeah, this football team has no
right to be three and two with the talent that
they've got on this team.

Speaker 7 (09:18):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (09:19):
I'm not trying to believe me, hear this. I'm not
trying to make you know, be Pollyanna on this. You
asked the question about what is there to like, right,
I think you can look at the fact that in
both games, I think we won the majority of the battles,
the play I'm sorry, the total yard battle, you know,
those things that you know lead to wins, getting more sacks,

(09:40):
you know, having a better overall time of possession, and
all those. I think we were separated by twelve seconds
in time of possession. It's just some little things that
they're not doing well that they could turn around.

Speaker 4 (09:53):
Now they haven't.

Speaker 3 (09:54):
And that's why I'm concerned, because I said coming into
this game, they still hadn't cleaned up the penalties last week.

Speaker 4 (10:00):
There were nine instead.

Speaker 3 (10:02):
Of singing or seven instead of sixteen, but they were critical,
crucial penalties. We started off today on that first drive
drew as a party. No, I'm sorry, it was a center.
The center hits a guy who's already down on the ground,
and it wasn't targeting, but there was no reason. Instead
of hitting the guy who's on the ground, how about
go find the guy who's still standing up and block
him to help the back or the receiver get that

(10:25):
spring to the touchdown. We're doing silly things that are
the mark of undisciplined kids.

Speaker 4 (10:30):
And I can see the coach is super.

Speaker 3 (10:31):
Frustrated because when Elise was asking him to have time
the question about the pillies twice, he said we got
to stop making them, and he was upset.

Speaker 4 (10:39):
And that is true.

Speaker 3 (10:40):
And then again, how does our kicker go from being
automatic to a guy who's missed three out of his
last four field goals. He missed the long win last week,
he missed three today, so actually four out of the
last five kicks he's missed.

Speaker 2 (10:55):
Yeah, well the forty two and the thirty seven are
the ones that you focused on. The fifty five, as
you said, kind of throw it out. His career long
was forty eight. This would have beat it by seven yards, obviously,
so that was a lot to ask. But I guess
the point is this is that, Okay, you're not winning games.
I mean, at some point you got to start winning
some games, yep. And they have not put themselves in
a hole where they're gonna have to win a game

(11:17):
or two that the oddsmakers say they're not supposed to
win to even think about getting to Bowl eligibility. And
now you're thinking about a team like I mean, this
is obviously today, this could change in a week. But
a team like in Indiana, you know, a team like
a UCLA whatever, they're looking at Washington thinking that's the
game we can get, we can get healthy there by
playing them, because they do silly stuff, they shoot themselves

(11:39):
in the foot, they're undisciplined, and I'm also starting to
believe that the referees are starting to look for Washington
to make mistakes like that. Because Javon Parker had to
tackle for loss and a face mask call on was it?

Speaker 7 (11:53):
Anne Guy?

Speaker 2 (11:53):
I believe it was. And I'm not even sure if
you've got this face mask, but anything that looks like
a penalty, Washington, I'm afraid it's starting to develop a reputation.

Speaker 6 (12:02):
Yeah, well, you know, it's like the old Raiders. Once
you start building that reputation, you start getting the calls.
I hope we're not headed that direction. I just feel
like the last few games has been that way.

Speaker 3 (12:13):
Yeah, I think other teams a softie here right now.
We're kind of in that you know, mode of where
we're frustrated as husky fans.

Speaker 7 (12:21):
It's just what I have.

Speaker 3 (12:22):
Well, I know, but my point is this, other teams
can't look at us and say, oh, that's a win
or whatever, because we've outplayed the two teams that we've
lost to in so many ways.

Speaker 4 (12:34):
It's just that small little thing.

Speaker 3 (12:37):
Being disciplined and then actually having what Mario as Mario described,
and how about this Mario an identity inside of the
ten yard line?

Speaker 4 (12:46):
What are our go to things?

Speaker 3 (12:47):
How do we exploit how do we use our talent
that we have to pike plays in those situations?

Speaker 2 (12:53):
Well, let me just go to that, because I think
you mentioned that earlier that some of the play calling
just it just didn't feel like there was any kind.

Speaker 4 (12:58):
Of a rhythm or plan rhythm.

Speaker 2 (13:00):
And I'm kind of what I'm sensing, and I'm not
saying this is true, but I think a lot of
us as sports fans, we kind of have this vibe,
we have this feel right that doesn't feel this way,
that feels that way. It kind of feels like the
players and the coaching staff are a little bit disconnected
from what the plan is. I'm not saying they haven't

(13:21):
worked on this stuff. I'm not saying they're not on
the same page, but it feels like at times they're not. Meaning,
you get down inside the four yard line and you
kind of try to outsmart everybody. Instead of just giving
the ball to number one, you start chucking the ball around.
You get balls tipped. You gotta wide open Jalles Jackson
to the end zone. By the way, on fourth down,
you thought the ball was maybe tipped on the west

(13:42):
route too. But when you when you when you put
the ball in the air, things like that can happen.
So you get to the two yard the three yard line,
the four yard line, and then you pull where Will
Rogers off the field and you got Demon Williams on there.

Speaker 5 (13:54):
And I know your point, Greg is that, hey, when.

Speaker 2 (13:56):
De Mont Williams comes in, positive things are usually happening.

Speaker 5 (14:00):
I agree with that, but I.

Speaker 2 (14:01):
Do also feel like they are getting themselves out of
a rhythm that Will Rogers deserves to be in it.
And there's just times, especially close to the goal line
Mario and Greg, where I feel like they just aren't
on the same page and they're trying to outsmart the
opponent instead of simply going with what we think would work.

Speaker 3 (14:18):
I think what they need to do is decide this
is who we are here, whether it's we're gonna be
a power run team or we're gonna spread them out.
We're gonna get the ball into our hands of our
playmakers and make a decision and then force your will
on the other team. This is our style, this is
who he is right right now. They don't, like you said,
they don't know. They're kind of figuring out. They're winging it.

(14:39):
Sometimes they try to spread them out. Sometimes they run
the option from shotgun. Sometimes they put Demon Williams in.
Sometimes they try to run right up the middle with
the floor, so they don't have it. What they need
to do is decide this is who we are, this
is who we're gonna be, and now we're gonna make
the defense dance to our music.

Speaker 2 (14:56):
You know what it feels like, Mario, It feels like
they're almost playing a preseason right now, and they're just
trying to kind of figure out what they are before
the regular season starts.

Speaker 7 (15:05):
That's exactly what he looks like.

Speaker 6 (15:06):
It looks like they're just trying to get the Kings
out and figure it out. That's why we have so
many penalties. That's why when we go down there, it
seems like we're tinkering. I could tell you the few
plays we're gonna run. We're gonna throw it to jen
Zel down there. It's gonna be a slant or a fade.
He got a great slanting up this game and got
the touchdown out. Other than that, we're very vanilla down there,
and it's very predictable.

Speaker 2 (15:26):
Well, you had you had two different plays in the
end zone on opposite ends of the field from Will
Rogers to Jiles Jackson. One ball got tipped, another one
there was I think apparently some miscommunication song where Giles
snapped off his route a little bit early. Again, Will's
looking towards the pyrot and the pylon and he's not there.
Some of that can maybe be explained of, Hey, these
guys haven't played a lot of football together.

Speaker 5 (15:48):
Those are also two veteran guys.

Speaker 6 (15:50):
Yes, you would think that they have practiced it enough
and you're on the same page and they read it
the same, but it cost us. You cannot make that
mistake at the goal line on the road, and.

Speaker 4 (15:59):
That's where you know I talked about coming.

Speaker 3 (16:02):
I think at halftime is I like to see these
guys make some big plays. They did get the fifty
one yard test now with Denzel Boston, which was his
first catch by the way, Mario, as you said, couldn't
find him in first half. But I think this team
is really gonna have to figure out a way to
score by utilizing the big play because that ten yard
in we don't have any sort of clue of how

(16:25):
to score and get into that point. So it's gonna
come down to our ability to make big places.

Speaker 6 (16:29):
I said, if we're gonna throw the ball at thirty times,
every time we throw the ball at thirty times, we're
gonna lose.

Speaker 2 (16:34):
Right, Well, what are they missing? What are they missing
inside the red zone? Inside the ten yard letter are
they Are they missing a just simply put commitment to
the run game, and I mean a commitment to number one, who, by.

Speaker 5 (16:48):
The way, is a beast.

Speaker 2 (16:49):
This guy sixteen carries one hundred and forty eight yards
nine point three yards of carry.

Speaker 5 (16:54):
Are you a kid met with Jonah Coleman?

Speaker 2 (16:56):
I mean, the guy's running like an all big ten
running back for God's sake. So are they missing just
an overall Hey, let's like we talked about the pregame show.
You know what we're gonna do. We know what that
you know what's coming? Try and stop number one?

Speaker 7 (17:10):
Anyway?

Speaker 2 (17:11):
Are they missing a commitment to Jonah Coleman? Are they
missing personnel? For example, maybe a tight end, a pass
catching tight end in the red zone?

Speaker 5 (17:19):
What are they missing down there?

Speaker 6 (17:20):
A package? Different packages down in the red zone? Good great.
Offensive coordinators have different packages you just mentioned. And it
can be two tights, it can be three receivers, it
can be four receivers. But they have to have a package.
And if they don't have a bunch of packages like
that in the red zone, then yes, you have to
go intentionally and give the ball to Jonah. I seen
him try it earlier. He had a couple long runs

(17:42):
and they tried to get him all the way to
the end zone, but that wasn't gonna work and it stopped,
and then of course they threw right to Denzel Boston
and that was it.

Speaker 4 (17:49):
Here's the thing to score from the two three four
yard line. With the run game, we're you're just gonna
run to me.

Speaker 3 (17:57):
It takes you having the personnel on your off You
can scheme good run plays out in the middle of
the field, and because you can throw the ball, you
might pitch it, you might run ops all of that.
In the middle of the field, the defense has to
kind of play in adjust and can't just commit the stopping.
If the defense has committed just stopping you from running one, two,
three yards, it doesn't come down to just Joonah Coleman's ability.

Speaker 4 (18:19):
If you don't have the offensive.

Speaker 3 (18:21):
Line that's down there that can knock guys off the ball,
that can get him some room, it becomes extremely more
difficult for him to.

Speaker 4 (18:29):
Just I know, Sophia seems like, oh it's just one
or two yards. He's a great back.

Speaker 3 (18:32):
But if your offensive line isn't able to get some
push and move guys or get some holes down there.

Speaker 4 (18:38):
It's tough. It's easier for him to.

Speaker 3 (18:40):
Break the bigger runs and get the longer carries in
the middle of the field because there's so many things.

Speaker 7 (18:43):
That defense has to worry about.

Speaker 3 (18:45):
That's why it's tough to score inside to ten in
the five yard line, because you have to throw out
half of your playbook and the defense can focus on
just one thing.

Speaker 5 (18:53):
Well, let's get some of your phone calls.

Speaker 2 (18:55):
Two h six ninety five, ninety five or eight nine
or nine five. Mitchell blize back in the studio. We're
at Moss Bay Hall in Kirkland. Will spend some time
talking to you guys on the phone. You want to
jump on give us your thoughts on all this just
a I mean, I just had a loss for words
in some ways.

Speaker 5 (19:12):
Man, you outgained an opponent by twitter and twenty two yards.

Speaker 7 (19:15):
Blew it.

Speaker 4 (19:15):
You blew it. You win the game and the story.

Speaker 2 (19:18):
This is a better football team than Rutgers, and they
showed that tonight, but they're not better in the category
that mattered, and that was managing themselves. I mean, Jed
Fish said this in the postgame show. We can't beat
two teams, right, We're not better trying to beat the
opponent and us at the same time.

Speaker 7 (19:33):
And a lot of that.

Speaker 2 (19:34):
I mean, guys, let's face it, let's not let Jed
fish off the hook here.

Speaker 5 (19:37):
He is the head coach of this football team.

Speaker 2 (19:39):
His coaching staff has got to have these guys better
focused and better prepared to make sure that guys like
Vincent Holmes don't run off the sideline during a live play.
I mean, just to your falling asleep thought point. You dude,
you gotta know the rules. Hu riga Is a week ago.

(20:01):
Had to know that if a bat comes flying down
the third baseline, that's not a dead ball. Get your
ass back on third base. Vincent Holmes, I know, is
a young guy's a redsher freshman, but he.

Speaker 5 (20:11):
Knows better than that. He's played football.

Speaker 2 (20:14):
He knows a block field goal it doesn't equal to
dead play, and he takes off and wipes out the block.
So those things, in the end, if they continue to
happen over and over again, which you made a point
about it. You were not happy with the flags against
Northwestern ere I was ready to say that. I thought
they'd made progress. You you did not believe that. So

(20:35):
that means that this is now three games in a
row where they've done this. At some point you can
no longer blame the players. At some point the coaches
have got to take responsibility and be on the hot
seat for the way this team is responding.

Speaker 5 (20:48):
We're gonna break.

Speaker 2 (20:49):

Speaker 2 (28:15):
The Huskies outgained Rutgers five hundred and twenty one to
two hundred and ninety nine. They run for two hundred
and seven yards on the Rutgers defense. We talked before
the game about that great Rutgers defensive front Kyle Manungai
came in averaging over six yards of carry, was held
to five point three and forty of those came on

(28:37):
one carry.

Speaker 5 (28:38):
I thought they did a decent job on him.

Speaker 2 (28:40):
I mean, he's obviously a very good player, no question
about that, but the job they did on him was
not too shabby whatsoever. Don't turn the ball over, hold
them to twenty one All winning recipes for me, Yeah,
and it doesn't work out like that. Let's go to
the phone lines, Jayden and Tacoma. You're on the hanks.
What's going on?

Speaker 18 (29:01):
Oh guys? Wow, I just I had to take some
breasts my wife with thought she was going to put
the heart paddles on me during this game. I just
I lost it. Here's the thing. I mean, I you know,
there was there was no no secret that we were
going to it was going to be tough, you know,
all the new starters, new coaching staff, and any sport

(29:22):
that's tough, especially college football, And so I get it.
Here's a couple of things that I'm surprised about more
than what I thought.

Speaker 4 (29:31):
I thought was.

Speaker 18 (29:32):
I thought we were going to be better at first.
Will Rogers is a good player. He's not a great player.
He's a good player for as much experience as he
has in the SEC and all the passing yards he
had success down there. Gosh, there's some times out there, guys,
where can you make an audible? Is Jed Fish allowing
him to do some audibles where it just seems like

(29:53):
in some instances he freezes up And how many are
we going to have a fumbled snap in every single game?
That he does. I mean every single game he has
one or two there's those little things where you'd want
that field general, that quarterback to take control, and he
just doesn't do it, especially in the red zone. And
the other thing. I want to get your comment on Jed.

(30:14):
I mean, I think Jed's a great guy. We know
he has NFL aspirations. We get that, Okay. I understand
that what he did with Arizona was good towards the
end of that when he had amazing players. How is
he at developing these brand new guys? I mean, these
guys that are just raw right right out of and
it just seems like there's a learning curve here more

(30:37):
than I thought there would be. Saying he's not the guy.
I just I just have some questions about that, and
I'll take your answers off the air. You guys are
great things, go jump in.

Speaker 5 (30:48):
Well.

Speaker 3 (30:49):
You talk about the learning curve of him grooming guys
and you know, getting them to that place that takes time.

Speaker 4 (30:55):
It takes more than four games sometimes when you got
fifty three new players.

Speaker 7 (30:58):
And guys you know that are young.

Speaker 4 (31:00):
I haven't played in the system. That's gonna take some time.

Speaker 3 (31:02):
So I'm not ready to make a full judgment on
that just yet. I'm not saying he is or isn't
good at, you know, helping guys, you know, become great players.
I don't know yet. That hasn't really been enough time
in this system for any of them. I just really
think that. But as far as the quarterback is concerned,
I think he's playing good enough for us to win
football games and games like this. I don't really, by

(31:24):
any stretch of imagination, believe that.

Speaker 4 (31:27):
He's the reason.

Speaker 3 (31:27):
And you know what, coach Jedfish does put me in
the mind of Mario, I don't know about you is
a type of coach that probably doesn't allow his quarterback
to make a lot of audibles and change a lot
of play It seems like he's the type of guy
that really wants to have control of that offense. And
so I don't know if will Is really has that
option to make a lot of play changes and calls.

(31:48):
Usually what they do is they give you, if this
play is really really bad, here's the run, option to pass,
option to get of it. Outside of that, there's really
not a lot of opportunities to change it. And I
don't know, other than down at the line where I
would say there was a need to have changed a
lot of plays. Most of the plays, especially today, had
a way to be successful, and they outgained and out

(32:10):
yardage the other team.

Speaker 6 (32:12):
The snaps, Yeah, that's ridiculous. Yeah, we gotta stop doing that. Yeah,
it's not how you start, it's how you finish. And
we can finish strong. We could talk about these two games. Absolutely,
we should have won both. We should be undefeated going
into the game against Michigan. Coach Fish is in total
control of the offense. He is not letting his quarterback
change any play. It is going to be the play

(32:32):
that he called, and if he doesn't like it, he's
gonna call time out and we're gonna call a different play.
And I just think that's the way he runs his
offense and that's how it is. I look at Will
Rogers and he hasn't turned the ball over all year.
He is messing up on those snaps, and we have
to get that fixed because a lot of those come
in costly times.

Speaker 7 (32:51):
Yeah, and and lose five.

Speaker 4 (32:53):
Some of that might be the center as well. Well,
It is part of that.

Speaker 7 (32:56):
Yeah, he has that one.

Speaker 2 (32:57):
But I do also think that guys, this is now
going into Week six of the year against Mission. I've
kind of kind of done with rotating everybody in the
offensive line. I mean, who's I haven't really seen much
of that Hatchet did TL started the game Latchet with
or Flatchett. That's the combo of Lendon Hatchet. He was
in there when you had the fumble. I just think
for a quarterback, he needs that continuity with a center,

(33:20):
and I think there's a lot of tinkering going on
that I believe is unnecessary unless Jidfish is just I mean,
this is gonna sound ridiculous. I'll say it anyway. I
don't know what his mindset is. Is he just punning
on twenty twenty four and just saying, look, let's use
this as a year to get the right guys in
the right spot and then really kind of move forward
next year and get this thing into high gear. I

(33:40):
think he's got a lot of guys that are gonna
be gone when the year's over. Will Rogers, to me,
has been I mean more than fine him am I
got twenty six of thirty six three oh six two
touchdowns on the road in that environment. How many times
watching the game tonight watching Will Rogers throw the ball.

Speaker 5 (33:56):
Did you say, oh man, that was a horrible throw.

Speaker 4 (33:58):
That is terrible.

Speaker 2 (34:00):
I mean the quarterbacks the one that I thought, the
one that I thought was Les Jackson one, but you
pointed I was tipped.

Speaker 3 (34:06):
Yeah, got tips and even great quarterbacks Michael Pennicks had
some throws last year and I was like, oh my god,
what was Is he still hurt?

Speaker 4 (34:13):
You know we said that many times.

Speaker 5 (34:15):
How about hey, apple coop last year?

Speaker 3 (34:17):
He's playing good enough for us to win these football
he is at the quarterback spot.

Speaker 4 (34:22):
Yes, it'd be great.

Speaker 3 (34:23):
If you know, he could overcome bad calls, if he
could overcome some of these snap issues. But he's not
the problem. It really is that lack of discipline and
us keeps today.

Speaker 4 (34:34):
The other part to that was us getting off the
field on third long.

Speaker 6 (34:37):
I also don't see him being a Michael Pennix and
winning games for us. It doesn't seem like he's given that,
or that's coach Fish not giving him the opportunity. I
said it after the Washington State game. We're throwing it
over thirty times. It looks like this had lost. So
I don't see Will Rogers being the quarterback that's going
to take us.

Speaker 7 (34:55):
To a victory. I don't know. I think he's passing.
I've seen it make some.

Speaker 3 (34:59):
Winning plays, but I don't think we're gonna throw the ball. Yeah,
you know, thirty five to forty times. Thirty times is
not in this day. And as that's not a ton
of passes that he's throwing, we're still a very balanced
I didn't I didn't see the day's number.

Speaker 7 (35:11):
Softie.

Speaker 3 (35:12):
Maybe you have him, but what was our run? And
keep in mind whatever our run the pass.

Speaker 4 (35:17):
Was, we'll be down right, game right.

Speaker 2 (35:19):
Thirty seven passes, twenty nine runs, Yeah, and we're hole's.
That's that's that's pretty balanced in today's offense. And by
the way, Greg, what you just said there, I totally
agree Will Pennix, Will Pennix, the hell's wrong with me?

Speaker 5 (35:31):
Will Rogers ain't the problem.

Speaker 2 (35:33):
No, he's not the prop twenty three of thirty one
three fourteen touchdown against Wazoo twenty six are uh yeah?
Twenty six of thirty six three oh six two touchdowns
today against Rutgers on the road. Yes, I mean in
the range. You may not have the number two finisher
in the Heisman Trophy race, but you've got a better
running back room right now than he had a year ago.

(35:54):
That's been upgraded. You're trying to convince me on Tuesday Show,
we got a better defense that we had, you know,
a year ago without that's been upgraded.

Speaker 5 (36:02):
So other areas of the team are better.

Speaker 2 (36:04):
Quarterback has taken a little bit of a step back,
But the quarterback was always gonna take a step back
going from the guy we had last year. Any poor
bastard that walked in here was going to be a
step back from what Michael pennocks. And you're telling me
you're replacing Michael frickin Pedix, but you can argue is
the greatest quarterback in Washington football history with this guy,
I'll sign up for that transition every year.

Speaker 4 (36:26):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (36:26):
It was, like I said, it was a fantastic coup
that they were able to convince this guy to come
back with all of his experience and in that transitional year.

Speaker 4 (36:35):
Really it comes down to execution, guys.

Speaker 3 (36:37):
It is really about the mistakes that we're making in
the penalty game that's costing us. We could even overcome
Mario the lack of pass for us. We could still
overcome back because we have more Saxon Rutgers did today.
They didn't put any pressure really on our quarterback and
they won the football game.

Speaker 4 (36:53):
We seemingly can overcome an offensive line.

Speaker 3 (36:56):
That's just okay, you know, because we got big run,
We got enough time for our quarterback and football. What
we can't overcome is critical penalties in crucial situations. And
then again, take all that away. If we make two
field goals less than forty five yards and one question,
all right, let's get a break. We'll come back with
more from Mossbey Hall and Kirkland. Huskies lose twenty one

(37:18):
to eighteen. Rutgers three and two with Michigan next Saturday.

Speaker 2 (44:22):
Boy, I'm looking at Will Rogers numbers in these two
losses to Wazoo and the Rutgers forty nine for sixty seven,
six hundred and twenty yards and three touchdowns seventy three
percent in those two games, and they lost both of them.
I mean, play calling has been an issue, Penalties has
been an issue, Execution on third and long by the
defense has been an issue. I mean you mentioned in

(44:42):
the Apple Cup, Greg that it was the fourth down play. Well,
how about the third and twenty five touchdown run by Johnny.

Speaker 4 (44:47):
Mtier at the end of the first half.

Speaker 2 (44:49):
And that's another, you know, kind of developing situation. Guys,
as we're back here from Moss Bay Hall and Kirkland
on Central Avenue. Husky Talk post game brought to by
Chevy Kyla. Whether you're an outdoor enthusiast urban explorer or
do it yourself die hard, there's a Colorado trim to
help you do more. You know, the red Zone issues,

(45:09):
and the penalties are a problem, but what is also
developing into a bit of an issue is the Husky
defense putting themselves in favorable situations and not being able
to get off the field. I mean, we've seen this
before from Husky defense. Is where they get into a
third and ten, third and fifteen, third and twelve, and
you're almost more nervous for that situation than you would

(45:31):
be if it was third and two.

Speaker 5 (45:32):
Why is that?

Speaker 4 (45:33):
Yeah, I think you know, there's a couple of things.

Speaker 3 (45:36):
We talked about the pass rush, especially on third and longs,
and how critical it is for the to rust that
quarterback and speed him up so that he's not able
to take his time and find a hole of the defense,
especially if you're blitzing, because somebody's gonna have a chance
to win that individual matchup. But I think also in
those critical moments it's about tackling because let's face it,

(45:58):
on the big run, even by the running back for Rutgers,
there was a yeahmnung guy, there was blatant miss tackles.
There was the one where he ran over the defensive
back and just crushed him and went through. So I
think sometimes the same thing with the quarterback of Washington
State misstackles.

Speaker 7 (46:17):
On those plays.

Speaker 3 (46:18):
The defense was good first and second down and probably
ninety percent of the time on tackling, but that ten
percent of the time when you combine that with a
ton of turnover, I mean a.

Speaker 4 (46:29):
Turn of penalties, concedes in the loss.

Speaker 3 (46:31):
It turns those things into bigger plays when you don't
make those tackles.

Speaker 6 (46:35):
Two things we've been talking about the defense all season
long is quarterback pressure, which is number one, and making tackles.
I think we could have one of the best defenses
in the country if we could get some pressure on
the quarterback. But we also aren't causing turnovers. We're not
doing a good job of ever causing turnovers. But we
have to figure out a way to get pressure on

(46:57):
the quarterback. I don't care if coach started calling some
it just because these guys were playing man the entire
game and they still didn't make too many mistakes.

Speaker 7 (47:05):
The problem was they made the mistakes on third down.

Speaker 2 (47:08):
Yeah yeah, uh, let's go to the John in Spokane
joining around with the Hawks.

Speaker 4 (47:12):
Go ahead, man, man.

Speaker 26 (47:16):
I don't know how many times they're gonna change his
t shirt. I don't how many times I gotta change
your hat.

Speaker 27 (47:21):
I don't know myny time, I gotta put a coat on.

Speaker 26 (47:24):
I don't know what to do with this team. I
love the defense. Mellowchick is doing a phenomenal job. I
love what he's doing. I just it's it's unexplicable, Like
I just I sit up as a season taket holder,
and I watched the team commit penalty after penalty, and
it's my.

Speaker 27 (47:44):
Ten month old dollars, like, what the heck is? What
the heck are you doing? Screaming every single play? It's
so frustrating, but I promise you did. I'm putting a
thousand dollars.

Speaker 18 (47:57):
Well, this team is gonna.

Speaker 27 (47:58):
Beat because get this team's shut them down. The shut
him up. They gun, and they're gonna win. That freaking
football team.

Speaker 4 (48:09):
And there you're a dog, all right, man, appreciate the call.

Speaker 2 (48:14):
I think it's gonna be very hard to move the
ball on Michigan's defense. I also think that Washington's defense
might be built to contain Michigan's offense. I would just say,
whatever the total is, take the under, bet the under,
bet the house on the under in the game next Saturday,
because that is a offensively challenged football team at the
quarterback and the wide receiver spot for sure. But again,

(48:37):
that's what this team needs, right, That's what this program needs.
Did he just order food? By the way, it looks
like some groceries. Did he did you uber eats to
the bar? What the hell is going.

Speaker 3 (48:50):
On, Gatory, It's groceries, dude, He's see it's groceries.

Speaker 5 (48:55):
It's not gotta be kidding.

Speaker 4 (48:56):
These guys ordered Nikol.

Speaker 3 (48:58):
So he's been sitting here, coffin is Steason on us
all game, didn't tell us he was sick, and now
he's ordering medications.

Speaker 2 (49:03):
He just gave the whole park covid. I swear we're
sitting here doing this show. Luski's outgained Rutgers by two
hundred and twenty two yards of Mario. It's got a
bunch of conserve delivered from aneuber driver.

Speaker 4 (49:16):
Here's the thing, man, I think you couldn't sit here
and say that this.

Speaker 3 (49:20):
Team is not going to beat Michigan this week. I
mean literally, what we've seen in our ability to gang
yards and you know, you say it's gonna be hard
to move with the ball against Michigan. Yeah, I kind
of agree, But at the same time, I saw usc
you moved the ball against Michigan. I'm not gonna compare
us to Texas because you know that might be a
different animal this year. But our quarterback and our wide
receivers have done a good job, and we have a.

Speaker 4 (49:42):
Talented running back.

Speaker 3 (49:43):
If the offensive line, which today, I thought our offensive
line was better than Rutgers.

Speaker 7 (49:49):
You talked about Rutgers having.

Speaker 4 (49:50):
All his seniors and juniors and experienced guys.

Speaker 3 (49:53):
I thought our offensive line was imposing their will at
times during this game and in the first half.

Speaker 4 (49:57):
So I think that to me, you can't con vince
me that we can't beat Michigan.

Speaker 3 (50:02):
I think we actually absolutely could beat Michigan.

Speaker 4 (50:04):
But we can't beat Michigan and the University of Washington
at the same time. And that's just the bottom line.

Speaker 6 (50:10):
That is the bottom line. Greg articulated it perfect. We
can't beat ourselves. We have a great chance to beat Michigan.
We can beat Michigan if we don't turn the ball over,
if we stop with the penalties, we cannot beat ourselves.
I definitely believe that coach Fish is going to have
his best offensive game plan for this Michigan team, and
I think our defense can stop. I think our defense

(50:32):
is built to stop a Michigan team, but what they'll
do is try and throw the ball. Everybody's gonna try
and throw the ball unless we can get some pressure
on somebody.

Speaker 3 (50:40):
That's something that's boggling my mind right now, is Mario mitched.
We don't turn the football over, right, Usually we don't
have it turnovers either. Yeah, but usually when teams are
undisciplined and they get a lot of pillage, they turn
the football over too, because that undisciplined causes habits that
make ball security a real issue. And you know, we've
had a couple of bubbles, but we've been able to

(51:01):
land on them. So the thing that's making me scratch
my head softy as well is that we're disciplined enough
not to turn the football over make those mistakes, but
we're still I mean, it's the dumbest penalties. A guy
literally in that first drive, so off, I'm gonna go
back to it. I know I described this earlier, but
there's a guy laying on the ground who's already been blocked. Okay,
our sins already knocked him down, and then he dives

(51:23):
on top of him like he wants to block him
again when he's laying on the ground, when you can
run down the field and then a guy runs as
a party as a party did the same thing later
in the game, that the.

Speaker 2 (51:35):
Same thing, and you know what, the flat the actual
act itself didn't look like much, but it just got
flagged for that supporters ago.

Speaker 5 (51:44):
Now we're doing the same thing.

Speaker 3 (51:45):
That's what's bloggling my mind because usually teams like that
that are that undisciplined turned the ball over a lot
as well, so it should be again back to your point, Now,
this is on the coaches, because there's some way you're
not getting this message across to your players that we
can't do these stupid things, especially when you just saw
it happen and then a guy running on the field
in the middle of a live played those when do

(52:07):
those things happen? We've had some real goofy things that
have kept us from winning.

Speaker 2 (52:11):
These two football they're just they're just giving games away, guys.
I mean they're giving games away, right they they are.
They are literally just telling the football gods, we know
we played well enough to win.

Speaker 5 (52:21):
We don't want to find a way to take it back.

Speaker 2 (52:23):
We don't We're gonna return it right, We're gonna, we're gonna,
we're gonna do what Mario Bailey just did, but in reverse,
we're gonna have the stuff, whatever that is.

Speaker 4 (52:30):
You couldn't have gotten us something. You couldn't have asked.

Speaker 7 (52:31):
If you wanted something, by the way, I got you at.

Speaker 2 (52:33):
Okay, thank you very much, Candy Bar Maybe a little okay.
But this is this has been as frustrating a start
to a season because I think this football team is.

Speaker 5 (52:44):
There, they've been talent, they've got.

Speaker 2 (52:46):
Talent and actually, and somebody just mentioned this on Twitter,
the job that the coaching staff did over the off
season to get them back to where they are is commendable.

Speaker 5 (52:56):
But now it's you know what it's like.

Speaker 2 (52:58):
It's like Jerry Depoto building the pitching staff in baseball,
but you can't build an offense.

Speaker 5 (53:03):
I mean getting hit and you're pissing it away. You're wasting.

Speaker 2 (53:06):
All of the great things you did over the offseason
are gonna be for not because you can't stop shooting
yourself for the foot.

Speaker 7 (53:13):
I want you to look at Will Rogers' stats.

Speaker 6 (53:15):
He has he's stolen seventy has ten touchdowns and zero innocense.

Speaker 7 (53:19):
That's right, you will take that all.

Speaker 5 (53:21):
Day, all day, all day if we're giving that.

Speaker 2 (53:25):
Yeah, they just turned the lights on here at the bar,
so I think that means they want us out of here.

Speaker 4 (53:29):
Yeah, I turn the lights on. That means you can
see all the girls. So you know it's time to go,
unless you're really really drunk.

Speaker 2 (53:35):
I'm looking at you too, and that's ugly enough for me.
