(00:01):
Uh, excited to have this guyin studio. He just put out a
brand spanking new album. But we'rejust catching up on life with Jaco and
how you've been. What's up,man, I've been really good. I've
been busy and been good. Though. I gotta say you look well rested,
like do I Yeah, Oh that'sgood. I appreciate it. Here
I am my buddy told me lasttime, he said that he thought I've
(00:23):
had a good energy. He waslike, dude, your energy is good
right now. You like you feelgood? I was like, I feel
I feel really good. Yeah.Having pro for the summertime is um is
fun for me because uh yeah, she's in school all year, so to
spend some time on the road withher and UM and yeah, I just
enjoy it. I just think Ifeel better anyways in the summertime. It's
(00:43):
kind of what I grew up loving. So yeah, at one, let's
be honest, Jaco and music, for some reasons, has always screamed summertime.
It was better in the summer.Yeah, right, I want to
dive into the new album in asecond, But what what have you been
up to outside of music, Becauseobviously, dad life is fantastic but but
what else to catch people up onall things Jake Owen, Man, I've
been doing all kinds of stuff outsideof the music, um, trying to
(01:07):
be you know, I like tobe a good friend of people. So
I just always like being there formy friends and doing things where I don't
come across as a guy that alwaysis the center of attention, you know.
I try to do things for others. So I've been doing that.
I've been playing golf. I'm playinga lot of golf. I've got some
golf tournaments coming up. I'm gonnaplay in this celebrity Tahoe thing out in
(01:30):
Tahoe. I played that last year, so that's coming up in a couple
of weeks. And other than that, just playing shows on the road and
stay busy. Well, I gottaask you, it's I'm gonna come back
to the charitable Jake Owen, who'sdoing stuff for others. But I gotta
ask I see on social media yougolf with our our morning guy, Bobby
Bones. Yeah, we see thepictures and we see some videos every now
(01:52):
and again, but we never getthe outcome shared with the outcomes. How
do how does Jake versus Bobby Panout. We never play, We never
play like against each other. Justgo out and play some golf and have
fun. But uh, Bobby,Bobby's getting a lot better. Actually,
he's a he's a good athlete.He's got a good golf swing. He's
lefty, so it's hard to kindof correlate, like this is how you
(02:14):
do it from my side of thefence. Yeah, but he's he hits
a good he hits a good.God, I gotta get out there.
I can't tell you the last timeif you gotta get out there. If
you were like, hey, let'sgo golfing, I'd be like, can
I use your Let's go golfing,But like I don't even have clubs?
Can use yours? Yeah? Yeah, you can't take me through A show
happened not long ago that Darius Ruckerhas put a lot of time and efforts
(02:36):
over the years his annual Darius andFriends show for saying Jude Children's Research Hospital.
Uh, obviously, country music andsaying jud go hand in hand together,
So duh if if they invite you. But when it comes to working
with Darius on something that he's reallyput his his heart into it. For
the last thirteen twelve thirteen years.Yeah, what was that like to be
a part of the lineup that lineup? And what do those shows mean to
(02:58):
you? Because you get to enjoyhim as a in a little bit too,
right, Yeah, there's so manyothers that you look forward to seeing
here and playing. Um and Idid that night for sure. But as
I mentioned a little bit ago,um, you know, doing stuff for
other people is always what is moregratifying than than just being selfish doing things
for yourself. And I think inour business a lot of us as artists
(03:20):
can be un can ride the lineof sometimes being a little selfish and it
always being about us and what we'redoing. So to help a friend out
who's he's helped me many times beforetoo with my foundation and friends. Helping
friends raise awareness and money for agreat cause is always is always what I
would rather be thought of as downthe road because those are the things people
(03:44):
remember well. So let me askyou that is that something you because you've
had I don't want to say along career because it sounds like I'm calling
you old and I'm definitely not doingthat, but but uh, the length
of time you've had in country musicand creating music is a charitable side,
something that you learn as you go, because obviously you don't. You get
into this because you love it.You want to make music, this is
(04:05):
what you want to do for aliving. At what point your careers are
like, Man, I could Icould do more than just write the music
and create the music, Like,I can make a difference outside of that.
Well, I bet I've had arecord deal now for you know,
sixteen years maybe, and I betfor a little over ten or eleven of
(04:25):
those we've had the foundation. SoI think like the first five years of
my career, I was kind oftrying to, you know, figure it
all out. And that's understandable fora lot of young artists. But I
think it's really important to also letpeople know that the sooner the better to
start. You have a voice andyou can do anything. You can help
anyone any place. It's just amatter of using your passion and your voice
(04:47):
and your platform to the best thatyou can outside of music, and I
always encourage people to do that.I know it's been really fulfilling for me
and my family in my hometown, and the people we've been able to help
that have been affected by are notnot my help. I mean, I'm
just a piece of it. Butour community comes together and we do great
(05:09):
things every year, and I doand I wouldn't be able to do without
good friends like Darius And we've hadJimmy Buffett, I've had Florida, Georgia,
Line, a little, big town, you name it. I'm forgetting
people that Tracy Lawrence last year,Alabama, Randy Owen. I mean,
those people have given their time forfree to come and help to raise money
(05:31):
for better and bigger calls. Anduh, I just man, I feel
like I want to do the samefor other people. On top of that,
And I'm influenced this by the factthat your daughter is hanging with you
today. How important is it foryou to Obviously you want your children to
see like you work hard and you'reout there creating a living and creating a
(05:54):
life, But how how important isit for you artists aside just as a
dad, for for your kids tosee like, Hey, this this part
is nice and it's cool to havea record deal in place shows, but
like making a difference is a bigdeal. Yeah that I think she knows
that she's seen me talk to herabout the importance of being good for other
(06:19):
people. She's really kind too.For all, I talk about her like
she's not sitting here, But evenwhen her teachers write up her reports and
talk about how she's the one inthe class who's kind and looks out for
others and takes care of people.I think that character, trait, and
quality is something that no matter whatyou do in your life, whether you're
(06:40):
a singer or whether she decides todo whatever she wants to do. No
matter what you do or you maybe defined as by a profession, that
doesn't mean that you can't be definedas like a kind human that takes care
of other people. And so that'sthe first thing that I think that I
try to teach her as a asa child and um, and she's been
(07:01):
great. She's seen us do alot of really good things for other kids,
UM, and and people that sheknows that she's really fortunate to grow
up this way. UM, soit's important for us to help those that
aren't as fortunate. Uh. Let'sjump into the new album just came out,
Loose Cannon. What are some ofthe songs that that fans are gravitating
(07:24):
to more than others? Are somethat are like you scroll to social media.
Yeah, I got a really goodresponse from a lot of people about
Um about the record, which isreally flattering for me. Um scrolling through
social media, it's funny you saythat. Uh. The other day I
asked some people about like what theywere digging on, like what they like,
(07:45):
and there's been a lot of reallyconsistent reviews. Um. Just reading
right now, it's a lot ofpeople like it don't he Won't You Do,
which is kind of a slower, real country song, which is surprising
for me. Um. But theending is getting a lot of credits.
Somewhere South with Rum, which waswritten by Jordan Davis, a really good
(08:07):
friend of mine. He sent thatto another great golfer. Yeah, good
golfer, but man, a lotof them. Hopeless is one that's really
good. Hearts and habits on theBoat Again. People like on the Boat
Again too, So but no,I've got great reviews and it's really really
fulfilling and flattering to know that, because it's really nervous to put out an
(08:30):
album that you know, you don'tknow people are gonna like it or not
so and people always judge you basedoff your last record, like is it
gonna be as good? As thelast one. So when people told me
that they were getting like Barefootblue gNight vibes off this new record, I
was like, cool, then wedid our job. I'm cool with that
because I made a couple of bucksoff of Barefootblue Ga Night Zone go Forth.
(08:52):
Yeah, I don't even know ifit's about the bucks as much as
it was about, you know, just getting great momentum from an album that
people genuinely like, lived with, they loved it, they identified with it.
And that's what you try to dowhen you make an album, do
you when you go in the studioyou say that people are getting vibes off
of a song that's been massive foryour career. That's not a goal though,
right, Like, hey, weneed to get in the studio and
(09:13):
make another Barefootblues Unite or this needsa feeling. Yeah, now, we
don't even even reference that as muchas it's just about like great songs.
Like I was telling someone this earlier, like I wrote an incredible amount of
songs that I did not record formy album, and they're good, but
they're not as good as the onesI put on my album. So I
(09:35):
always will put the better song atthe time when you put them all together
and you read them out, thebest songs win. And I think that
is what has helped me in mycareer throughout all these years is I've really
tried to record great songs and theydon't always work. Not everyone everyone loves
everything, but that's art in general. But if you can consistently just put
(09:58):
out a great song and a greatlyric, a great message, I think
people resonate with that. There's sixteensongs on the new album, which is
available everywhere including the iHeart Radio app. Yeah, thank you guys, by
the way, But why sixteen?Because I feel like everybody there's artists that
are like, here's one hundred andseventeen songs, I'm a new project.
And then there's some artists that arelike, hey, here's eight, here's
ten. Why what? Why sixteen? Yeah? I took the seventeen fulle
(10:22):
off? That makes sense? Didyou? But do you have a target?
Like an odd number? You know? So why not? Do you
don't have a goal though? Right? You're like, hey, we're just
gonna throw all these songs together andwhichever one stick they stick. I don't.
I mean, I always have agoal of putting the best album together
(10:43):
possible, and I probably had anotherfive or six that I could have put
on there. But at some point, too much, you know, too
much music's too much music, youknow, people just have enough time to
like for instance, like, um, the other day I was listening in
Morgan Wallen's album is so great obviouslyand everyone knows, everyone's talking about it
and whatever. There's a lot ofsongs on it, and the other day
I heard a song was like Ieven heard this song yet, and that
(11:03):
album has been out for a while, you know, so it's like taking
me this long to digest it.And I think people have lives, people
have and then less you're Morgan Wallenwith like that type of attention span on
you. I thought like sixteen wasa good and good number where it was
more than usual, but not liketoo much where you know, you got
to sit in the car for threedays for an extra a few days.
(11:26):
So I just thought, hey,I can I can give them more,
you know, in another six monthsor so. Well, that's the thing
when it comes to it. People. It feels like EPs are coming more
popular now. Old Dominia just puton an EP the other day that kind
of let them rest in between analbum cycle. But also deluxe editions are
a big deal now. So ifyou got like an extra five song sitting
around, boom, we got adeluxe edition. Yeah, man, I'm
(11:48):
just again. I'm about putting outgood songs. If it's four of them,
cool, put out four of them. If it's forty of them,
I doubt that you can have fortyawesome songs all that once. But if
you can put them out, butjust make sure it's quality, make sure
people are going to dig it,and make sure that it's about the music
and not just like trying to putsomething out there. And I'll tell you
(12:09):
there's something versus the last time wetalked to you, which you were aunt
about your music. I feel likeyou're in a different headspace career wise.
I mean maybe you feel like you'rethinking more clear or I don't know,
it feels like you're you're really enjoyingevery step more than ever unless I'm way
off, uh no, I meanI guess you're attentive, which is cool.
(12:31):
And I don't know when the lasttime I chatted with you where it
may have seemed different. It's probablylike a year maybe a year probably year
ago. A year ago. Itis definitely in a different place in my
life. You know, I've justworked. I've gone through this business from
the kid that no one knew whohe was to people knowing who I was.
And then then once you get tobe known and you've had a good
(12:52):
career, then the rest of yourcareer is about like like maintaining it right.
So I've gone through is like alot of things that a lot of
artists like you cannot go through unlessyou go through a long, extended career.
So yeah, I would say I'mfor sure fired up to be where
I am in my life right now, and I'm grateful more than anything,
(13:13):
I think for what I've done.So I'm just trying to be happy man,
just make good music and enjoy myfamily and realize that like this is
pretty awesome, pretty awesome life.Last thing I want to ask is the
album is out. People are wellconsuming, digesting however you want to talk
about music, they're doing it withyour sixteen songs. Do you get to
(13:35):
enjoy the work that you've put intothese? Are you kind of thinking down
the road already, like, Hey, I know there's more songs I got,
I know I want to get themout. Are you already thinking in
the future. Are you kind oflike I'll get to that when I get
to that. No, no,no, I'm already to that. I'm
already yeah. Yeah, Like Idid what I needed to do for this
album and get it out in thetimeframe that you know, it's a business,
(13:56):
so like people, there's all peopleinvolved things that we're all trying to
work on. But we did itand we put it out there and now
people have it and they can listento it. So I'm now I'm on
what's next? Right, Like,I don't just say I'm not sitting around
right now going cool. I gotsome time to just chill. I you
only have a window in your lifeto like be the best and put out
the best stuff you can. SoI gotta work. I gotta get back
(14:18):
to work. Now you swung theclub. Now you're watching the ball fly
getting ready for the next. Well, it's kind of like with golf.
You use that as an analogy.Um, you know, if I went
out today and played golf and Ishot sixty four, you know, like
eight under apart or something like careerround. Like I don't think I could
just like put my sticks down myclubs and be like, well, I'm
(14:39):
good for another year or so,like I because this is what I this
is all I've been wanting to dois shoot the best score I've ever shot.
Yeah. No, I think likewhat it makes you do is is
like you're like, I want toplay tomorrow, you know, I want
to Like I can't wait to what'snext? Like what am I gonna do
tomorrow? And usually what you donext isn't Now you're gonna be as good
as what you just did the daybefore. But it's the chase that like
keeps you coming act And that's that'swhat I'm doing. I love it,
(15:01):
Jake, And thanks for stopping by, brother, Yeah man, see you guys,
