Speaker 1 (00:15):
This is the muster on Hocke and early on a
Tuesday afternoon, Miles Herdman joins us from Open Country, where
he is regional Mooks are play manager. Miles. Great to
chat once again.
Speaker 2 (00:26):
Yes, good afternoon Andy from us.
Speaker 1 (00:29):
Yeah, always good to catch up with the team from
Open Country. We'll get this off the cuff straight away.
The old d met versus Bowden Barrett situation there. What
are your thoughts?
Speaker 2 (00:39):
Oh, isn't it great? Some great sport on TV at
the moment and Gamien mackenzie being a southern man, it's
great to see the all black squeak squeak through. But
let's test rugby in the very close game. I think
we underestimated the English awee. But it's a good young side,
some big guys on that team.
Speaker 1 (00:58):
Yeah, very good side.
Speaker 2 (00:59):
I think they'll only get better. I think Tuckenham is
going to be a great, a great game. When when's
head next November November? Yes, it's not far away.
Speaker 1 (01:08):
Yeah, we think about the last time we lost to
Eden Park as well to the France and nineteen ninety
four forty nine games ago when they got the try
from the end of the Earth. But apart from that. Yeah,
Eden Park pretty much their fortress.
Speaker 2 (01:21):
It's good to see in it for sure.
Speaker 1 (01:24):
Now open country, there has been quite a bit going
on recently milk volumes around the country. How's it looking whilest.
Speaker 2 (01:31):
We're getting a good start to the season in the north.
The white cuddos well set up, good grass covers, the
cows are an excellent condition and most farmers have now
started milking up there, so I think our on our
forecasting was slightly ahead at the moment, so that's that's
looking good. And I think in the woman a man
(01:51):
or a two area they dodged a bit of a
bullet up there. They were a bit short of feed
in the autumn, but they've had a bit of growth
over the winter and the guys are saying that there's
some fairly good seat now being given to the cows
and things are going quite well there as well.
Speaker 1 (02:09):
It's been an interesting season around the country full stop though,
hasn't it.
Speaker 2 (02:14):
Ah, Yes, there's quite some quite variations. I've set at
getting another pounding in the north with a bit of
rain today. But down here in Aru we've got a
few early calves on the ground. We don't really want
them this early We're looking forward to starting the new
season with pickups starting on the first of August, but
(02:36):
that will depend on milk volumes. Farmers are telling us
that they've had a much tighter carving spread with the
good mating conditions last season, so we're looking forward to
a good start and everything's just about ready to go now.
Speaker 1 (02:50):
Yeah, a few farmers saying they're getting the odd calf
starting to get on the ground at the moment. But
we look here to tonight. The last two gedt auctions
have been down. There's another event happening the sea. Hopefully
it stabilizes a wee bit.
Speaker 2 (03:04):
Yes, it's always a bit concerning at this time of
the year, but I think we've got to realize it's
basically the off season for marketing product from Oceania and
there's a there's a lot of product now coming on
the market from the Northern Hemisphere, so that that puts
pressure and a lot of competition into the market. A
bit of oversupply of product probably, but yeah, we're still
(03:28):
cautiously optimistic for the coming season. There's quite a basket
of things affecting things at the moment. You know, you've
got a lot of unrest in the Middle East, China.
China's doing a bit of restructuring Red Sea. Our marketing
guys are telling us that freight and getting product to
market on time is still a real issue. A few
(03:50):
of the big ship and companies are refusing to go
through the Red Sea. So yeah, there's there's a lot
of things affecting product prices. So yep, we've just got
to be optimistic and hopes that thinks still early in
the season. We'll see how it goes.
Speaker 1 (04:09):
Now, there's a good chance at the moment before carving
starts and speaking to a lot of people as well.
For Steve Henderson, well, I had Steve O on the
show today as well and just talking about the opportunity
of getting off and having a wee bit of a
break and there's a perfect time at the moment to
do that, especially being in the school holidays.
Speaker 2 (04:26):
Yea, it's great to see the guys getting out. Steve
Henderson's got a nice baby boat there. He'll be out
in the in the Strait probably catching with the kids probably, yeah,
but no, it's it's it's important that they do take
time out with their families. This sort of frosty weather
ideal for going to Queenstown skiing. You know, like we've
(04:47):
got some great things really close to our homes that
we can get away with the kids.
Speaker 1 (04:52):
And the thing is, when you get a whole frost,
it might be cold, but it's probably one of the
most picturesque settings you'll imagine.
Speaker 2 (04:59):
I know, frost in the trees. It's Unbelievablehen it's still
there at three o'clock in the afternoon, isn't it.
Speaker 1 (05:04):
Oh for sure. It's just when the temperature is about
two degrees and the sun's in the sky that you're
starting to wonder sometimes. But I mean it is that
time of year now. As far as the factory down
there on Abor House, thing's been.
Speaker 2 (05:16):
It's a busy time for the factory. You know, people
think that it's the off season, but it's the time
that they catch up. A lot of plant maintenance going
on while the factories and shut down mode. All the
pumps and motors that get a service, any worn vowlves
and seals get replaced. You know, it's a total checkover.
It's a big job. I see even this year they're
(05:40):
doing the road into the factory. It's some major construction
going on there. It looks like we've got a concrete
runway going into the factory.
Speaker 1 (05:47):
Now, well that's not a bad thing. The argument could
be they could do a bit more roading around the
area if they are keen.
Speaker 2 (05:55):
I know what you mean. I've been getting around the bench.
Some of the roads are a little bit rough at the
moment that they're working at it.
Speaker 1 (06:01):
Yeah, it's all about having the infrastructure as well and
just having the staff getting them trained up for the
new season too.
Speaker 2 (06:08):
Yeah, that's extremely important, both on farm and in the factory.
You know, you've got to make sure you've got adequate
staffing levels. You've got to have the appropriate clothing and
safety gear nowadays, and there's a lot of work goes
into planning shifts, especially in the factory down there. You
have a lot of different product runs, so they need
(06:30):
more people for some than others. But it's making sure
that the staff have got some buy in and they
know what's happening, and.
Speaker 1 (06:37):
It's all about strategic planning for the year heap for
open country.
Speaker 2 (06:42):
Yes, it's a very important thing. They have to have
a plan like anyone, and it's a lot of work
goes into getting it right.
Speaker 1 (06:53):
Now, you talked about the payout briefly before Miles cautiously
optimistic for the season ahead.
Speaker 2 (07:00):
Up our marketing guys are quite quite confident. They're well
sold with their product. They say getting it to market
is a bit of an issues. Well, what is one
of the major issues that they've got, timing is the
ultimate They're still Open Country still forecasting a settlement payout
(07:23):
of eight point thirty for the June to September period.
So that's good, you know, like we can survive on
that now.
Speaker 1 (07:32):
A lot of pressure on farmers financially at the moment.
We all know about that now Open Country as well, mate,
you're doing you a bit around that to help out farmers.
Speaker 2 (07:40):
Yes, Open Country have stepped out. They've their final settlement
period for last season is normally paid out in August
and they have split that payment now and they're paying
half way out in September. It's the old saying cash flows.
So Open Country is keen to see their farmers get
(08:04):
set up ready for the next season and have a
bit of cash to do it.
Speaker 1 (08:09):
And you're always keen to hear from farmers who want
to explore their options as well, and Open Country being
one of them.
Speaker 2 (08:15):
Yes, with a new Tree factory going in over the
next couple of years. At our R we're still looking
for new supply and we'll be out there pushing to
get as many new supplies across the line as we can.
Speaker 1 (08:28):
Good on your Miles, always great to chat on the Muster.
Speaker 2 (08:31):
Okay, thanks for that, Andy Miles.
Speaker 1 (08:33):
Hardman of Open Country Regional Milk Supply Manager. Great to
have Open Country on the Muster as we do as well.
Up next staying down at all surprise surprise, Miles. Probably
could have had a couple of them this morning if
you wanted to. Steve Henderson, as long as he's not
out on that boat off us, we'll see what he's
been up to.
