Submission was the teaching/mandate/calling we got in Purity Culture AFTER the alter.  I'm not holding back on this one because my experience in the evangelical church was truly vile.  AND...even if yours wasn't, you may have held some level of this oppressive belief.

I absolutely hate what this belief has done to both women and men. And I was responsible for perpetuating its hurtful agenda.

I was a teen in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. I was a committed member of Purity Culture. I could have been a poster child for the movement if there had been one other than Joshua Harris. Purity Culture suited me in more ways than I understood back then. It was safe and actionable. It had outcomes and it felt really good to be good.

Here’s the thing though.  I have spent over 27 years recovering and healing from it....

Who are you allowed to be? We have predetermined influences throughout our lives that embed, or hardwire, ideology into our social and coping skills. We learn who we are allowed to be without engaging in the experience of rejection. We learn morally through faith systems (culture and beliefs) what is acceptable to remain “in” or “holy”. These are powerful forces in our minds, aren’t they? 
But what if you could untangle...
