It's that easy. Our number two. As we said, we're
gonna do some college football tomorrow. The big game on
Fox is the Ohio State Michigan game. All kinds of
stuff is involved here. Michigan has won the last couple

(01:09):
of games. Is this How important is this for Ryan Day,
the coach at OSU. You know, if you don't be
Michigan enough, you could be out of a job. Yes, Bruce,
that's right. So this is like a huge game. Three
in a row would not sit well with the faithful
at Ohio State. But Andy, the question really is and

(01:31):
Jim Harborough, of course, will not be coaching.

Speaker 2 (01:34):
He suspended that whole story to win. He'll get the
win if they were.

Speaker 1 (01:38):
But that whole story was was weird because you remember
he was claiming that he wanted the due process in
his day in court, and then when I guess they
showed him the evidence that they had, he was pretty
quick to go, okay, never mind, you know what I mean,
Like what happened all of a sudden that he didn't
want due process in his day in court. I don't
know what they showed him, but the big Ted must

(02:01):
have showed him some man, because he did a reversal
on that didn't.

Speaker 3 (02:03):
He kind of pretty good deal. Said, Look, I won't
go to court get rid of one of my coaches.
You got another guy that got rid of two, and
let me get the wins even if I'm not coaching,
and the way we go, and I won't show the
evidence that we have, right, right, It's a good deal,
good attorney.

Speaker 1 (02:18):
But I guess in this case, who are you rooting
for in this game? And I'm gonna tell you. You know,
I'm a sports writer. You know I don't play favorites.
I don't root for anybody. I really don't, and I
haven't since nineteen eighty six when I got that job
in Wilkesbury, Pennsylvania. For real, I'm dead serious, you know me, Andy,

(02:41):
I'm a straight shooter.

Speaker 2 (02:42):
People don't like it. They think I should be more.

Speaker 1 (02:45):
Rob Roder home to Everybody in Detroit used to be
mad at me because I picked the Lions to lose
all the time, and I was mostly right. But anyway,
my point is, I think, of you're a football fan,
you gotta be rooting against Michigan. And I'll say this
because of the cheating scandal. It reminds me of the

(03:07):
Astros cheating scandal on how people. You know, they became
public enemy number one. And here's why it's bad because
their turnaround seems to coincide. And yeah, I don't have
all the stuff in front of me, all the evidence,
but you remember Ohio State was beating Michigan like a drum.

Speaker 2 (03:27):
It wasn't even a real rivalry.

Speaker 1 (03:28):
You remember they had one a ton in a row
and it was just like lopsided and it was ugly.
Jim Harbaugh was on the verge of being fired. He
had to take a pay cut at Michigan. You remember
all that stuff. It was bad, right, And all of
a sudden they started winning. They started winning, and you
just wonder how much of that is Michigan finally putting

(03:53):
it together or how much of it is some intel
and information that they also got which helped them along.

Speaker 2 (03:59):
Where are you you on this?

Speaker 1 (04:02):
And can you see what I'm saying when I say
something against Michigan.

Speaker 3 (04:06):
No, loud and clear, I hear what you're saying. And
I want to just preface this by saying, we did
not discuss this prior to the show. No, this is
not This is not one of those things like you
go one way, I go to the other. I'm a
Jim Harbar fan, and I'm rooting for Michigan, okay, because
i think they're getting screwed. And I'll tell you why.
What's worse tanking or what they've done? What's worse tanking

(04:28):
or the nil money when you're buying players, which play
which teams do all the time buying players? And I
tell you right now, they've beaten schools. They've beaten schools
like a drum this year Michigan. And I don't think
the so called alleged cheating had anything to do with it.

Speaker 2 (04:41):
I'm sure about that. How do you know, I don't know.

Speaker 4 (04:45):
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (04:46):
Me asked you.

Speaker 1 (04:46):
The Patriots, Bill Belicher got the largest fine in the
history of the NFL for a coach, five hundred thousand dollars,
right right, right.

Speaker 2 (04:56):
He also they.

Speaker 1 (04:57):
Lost draft picks, but they caught out the video. Okay,
But I'm just saying, you can't tell me that the
cheating doesn't matter, because you wouldn't do it if it
doesn't help you. Why would you do it? You cheat
because it helps you. If I know a team's defensive
signals or what their what their coverage is, I can adjust,

(05:18):
I can do I understand for it. I'll give you
an example, And you're right, I can't prove that. But
last week Michigan, they averted would have been a tremendous
travesty of the loss till Maryland. They won thirty one
to twenty four.

Speaker 3 (05:29):
But if you watch that game, the Maryland quarterback Tagliavoa,
he accounted for eleven of Michigan's points.

Speaker 2 (05:35):
It was him.

Speaker 3 (05:36):
You can't do that with scouting or so called cheating.
That's what way he blew the game for Maryland.

Speaker 2 (05:42):
I get it.

Speaker 3 (05:42):
And Michigan's defense averted the upset at Maryland because of
what their quarterback, the Maryland quarterback did, I understand that. Look,
the cheating is out there. They claimed that Harvard didn't
know anything about it. You know what, even if he
didn't know anything about it, it's his program. He's exactly
you say it, Rick Pattino. They're just so coloed CEO

(06:03):
of the organization. You have to know what's going on
in every aspect, from you to everybody underneath you in clete,
the equipment manager, the managers of the team, everybody. It's
your responsibility. So if you didn't know about it, shame
on you. You have to know about it. But I
still say I'm a Harvard fan. I always have been,
And look, I'm glady got a second life in Michigan,
and I hope they beat the pants off Ohio State tomorrow.

Speaker 2 (06:25):
Why are you anti Ohio State? Guy? I'm just curious.
As a guy, I think a lot has to do
a lot of time with the fans. I'm just curious.

Speaker 3 (06:32):
You know, A lot has to do with these said
the fans are. I thought it was bad when I
lived in Oklahoma with Oklahoma University fans, I thought they
were bad. These Ohio State fans are ridiculous. I mean,
And it may be worse in Michigan. I don't know.
You were up there. Yeah, covered Michigan for twenty weapons.
They may be just as bad. But these Ohio State
Michigan fans all nauseating.

Speaker 1 (06:50):
Whenever they lose. They just say that they ran out
of time. That's that's, you know, like that's the we
just ran out of time.

Speaker 2 (06:58):
Like oh I will.

Speaker 3 (06:59):
Say this about the game tomorrow, probable college football playoff
bids on the line, a potential Big Ten title on
the line, ultimate bragging rights, of course, and maybe a
coach's life is on the line with Ohio State if
he loses to Michigan again. But I don't think it's fair,
And to use the term fair in sports is almost ridiculous.
Both teams are eleven to zero and they're gonna play
the winner of the other division, which is Iowa, which

(07:20):
has two losses. So if Iowa wins against either Ohio
State or Michigan for the title game of the conference
and they're gonna have two losses and one of these
teams is going to have just one loss and they're
gonna stay home.

Speaker 2 (07:30):
That's ridiculous. That's a joke in itself.

Speaker 1 (07:33):
Yeah, that's well, the college football that's a whole different thing.
There's all kinds of quirky things that can happen, and
some of it doesn't make any sense. But in this case, here, Andy,
what surprises me is that you're down with cheating, is
that you're you did you hold the Astros accountable? I'm

(07:53):
asking did you hold the out Astro? I'll go one
step further? Did major League Baseball hold them accountable?

Speaker 5 (07:58):
Yes?

Speaker 3 (07:59):
They did what they could. What did you want to
what do they do? They're not gonna take a draft pickaway?
What did they do? What did major League Baseball do?
Teddy Astros? What are you talking about? The general manager
and the manager both lost their job.

Speaker 2 (08:12):
The Astros did that, not major League Baseball.

Speaker 1 (08:14):
But you don't think that was a nudge from the
league and they had to go out and expose them.

Speaker 2 (08:19):
People still look at them.

Speaker 1 (08:21):
You know what, Uh, Jose al Turey might be one
of the best Seconmas we've ever seen. And trust me,
when the time comes for the Hall of Fame, they're
gonna be people who remember him not warning his jersey
grips off. Okay, like I'm gonna go with you, like
there's something okay.

Speaker 3 (08:37):
When Deon Sanders was asked this question when the cheating incident,
the alleged cheating incident came up weeks ago, he says,
you know what, you gotta beat him on the field.
It's Manoway mono And I luck what Dan said, And
maybe he said that to protect this fellow coach. I
don't know why he said it, but I like Trinity.
You know that we'll protect each other. And you know
there's a lot of coaches, a lot of coaches are
happy that that harb us in trouble too.

Speaker 2 (08:58):
You know why, why why now let me hear this
all the time? Well, the Big Turn they ate Harball.
They just want to screw Jim Harball.

Speaker 1 (09:06):
The Big Ten doesn't want their team, one of their
teams and their conference that's undefeated, not to go to
the national championship or be in the in the tournament,
you know what I mean, in the conference in the
football playoffs.

Speaker 2 (09:19):
That doesn't make any sense to me. If you're just
doing that, why why.

Speaker 3 (09:23):
Would dank the commissioner? Wait, if you would dance the
commission of the Big ten one on one in a
private room in a setting, and it will never get out.
He would hope that Ohio State would win to end
this Michigan travesty. In his mind, he doesn't want Michigan
to go on.

Speaker 1 (09:38):
You think because there's question marks, and I think that
game will.

Speaker 3 (09:41):
Be surrounded, that game will be surrounded by that by
that's like dark cloud.

Speaker 1 (09:45):
But do you remember when Eric Mangini was coaching the
Jets and we're going to play the Patriots and called
out Bill Belichick and what they did and said, he
don't do that to me. Come on, Andy, you don't
believe that you would as a coach, didn't think about it.

Speaker 2 (10:02):
As a coach. You put in.

Speaker 1 (10:03):
Your hard work, your blood, your sweat, your tears, your
kids have worked hard, and the other team has your
defensive signals and they're cheating.

Speaker 2 (10:12):
You don't want that and that and that's what it.

Speaker 1 (10:14):
Has been alleged to Michigan that if nothing happened, then
Jim Hardbough shouldn't have bowed to the Big ten.

Speaker 2 (10:22):
He shouldn't have fired the coaches.

Speaker 1 (10:23):
Why do he fire people and have them resign if
they didn't do anything. The one thing I never heard
throughout the whole controversy, Andy, the one thing I never heard,
not once, was them say that they were innocent and
that they didn't do it. They gave you every excuse
about what other people are doing. And isn't that I
didn't know about it, but that they didn't know about it?

Speaker 2 (10:45):
But they did.

Speaker 1 (10:46):
Did they ever say that they didn't happen. They never
said that.

Speaker 3 (10:51):
Well, but the fact by them saying they didn't know
about it and it was gun dump by a guy
on his own who tells them they don't know what
happened because the guy did it on his own.

Speaker 1 (10:58):
So when you got it, But when you got the intel,
you didn't you didn't stop. Didn't think to yourself, boyd,
that intel's pretty good? Where'd we get that from? If
you're a head coach and they're feeding you some intel
that's working, wouldn't you go who's scout, who's scouting?

Speaker 2 (11:12):
Who's doing that? To say he doesn't know who's scouting
and who's doing stuff? I can't buy it.

Speaker 3 (11:17):
Well, you did mention one thing which I liked, Like
you got the kids that are working so hard at
least the conference with the NCAA or both didn't take
it away from them. Why punish them for something that
alleged happened that they had no control over because they've
done it on the field, you know.

Speaker 1 (11:33):
Good bitter thing somebody tells you, right, if somebody tells
you that this is the play or what this is
the defense we're running on the offense, you don't know
all that, do you.

Speaker 2 (11:42):
If you're the kid, you just go out, Oh wow,
you still got to beat him on the field, okay,
even you know.

Speaker 3 (11:47):
And I wish there was a test like a like
a pumas test you could do, like to see if
a team that has signals prior to a game and
another team plays the same team the fellow one week
without the signals, if it makes it difference. I'd like
to know, because you're still going to have the better people,
the better players to win. Believe me, you have to
have the better players, all right, you just have to.

Speaker 1 (12:07):
We want to hear from you on this eight seven,
seven ninety nine on Fox eight seven seven nine nine
six sixty three sixty nine.

Speaker 2 (12:15):
Where are you?

Speaker 1 (12:17):
Are you rooting against Michigan because of the cheating scandal
or you're rooting for Michigan to win despite what's happened
and uh to beedo Ohio State.

Speaker 2 (12:27):
We want to hear from you. And this is interesting
because I want what you could do with this.

Speaker 3 (12:32):
Stick it to the to the people that are accusing him,
could bitter and stick it to the conference, stick it
to the NC.

Speaker 1 (12:39):
I want to see Stay win if Michigan indeed has cheated,
because I don't want to see cheaters win, just like
I had an issue with the Astros.

Speaker 2 (12:47):
All right, eight seven, seven ninety nine. On Fox, we

Speaker 1 (14:31):
Where are you Ohio State, Michigan? Are you rooting against
Michigan for the alleged cheating scandal or not? Or you're
rooting for Michigan against Ohio State. Let's hear what they
have to say, Rob Parker along with Andy Furman in
for Chris Busar Robert in Fresno, you're on the odd

(14:51):
couple Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 9 (14:53):
Hey guys, thanks for taking my car. Yes, so every day,
watch listen another every day.

Speaker 10 (15:00):
Appreciate where I come from.

Speaker 9 (15:02):
I'm a Dodger fan. So when I look at Michigan,
I'm really hoping for a Ohio State big win. You know,
the Eastern Astros State still have a championship kochee in
there in their headquarters. And it would be like in football,
in my opinion, knowing if it's going to be a
runner of a pass, you've got a big way to
lag up.

Speaker 2 (15:22):
If it makes a big difference. I agree, you still
got to stop them. No, but it makes a big
stop them. Andy.

Speaker 1 (15:27):
If you know, if you're a baseball player and you
know a fastball's coming compared to a breaking pitch, you
don't tell me you don't have an.

Speaker 3 (15:34):
Advantage, right, I understand you have an advantage, But right Robert,
you have an advantage Fresno. But if Michigan knows the signals,
they're playing Fresno State at Fresnow State knows the signals,
Fresne State ain't stop in Michigan.

Speaker 2 (15:45):
All right, They ain't gonna stop.

Speaker 11 (15:47):
Like we know.

Speaker 9 (15:48):
But they'll do a lot better. They'll play a lot better, exactly.

Speaker 2 (15:51):
That's all. That's the point, all right.

Speaker 9 (15:53):
If it's Ohio State Michigan. Uh, the other team wins
if they know the signals.

Speaker 1 (15:58):
I think so to Robert, thank you, my man appreciated
eight seven seven Yeah, I appreciate you.

Speaker 2 (16:04):
Thanks for the support. Eight seven seven ninety nine On.

Speaker 3 (16:06):
Fox, Greg from Nashville, you're on the couple on Fox Sports.

Speaker 2 (16:10):
Ready, Hello, Greg?

Speaker 11 (16:11):
Hey?

Speaker 5 (16:12):
What's that?

Speaker 11 (16:12):
Feller is blue?

Speaker 2 (16:13):
How are you all go? Blue?

Speaker 3 (16:15):
Blue?

Speaker 2 (16:16):
Baby, go blue?

Speaker 12 (16:17):
Tell you.

Speaker 2 (16:20):
What happened? Greg? Are you doing? Greg? Come on? I
think he muted hisself. No, go ahead, think you what's
doing this?

Speaker 11 (16:28):
Ohio State confirmed in twenty twenty two they changed their signals.

Speaker 10 (16:33):
What happened in that game of Columbus.

Speaker 1 (16:38):
It doesn't matter if you still got info, if you
still got intel. But you still have intel, and you
got it illegally. Greg, That's why their rules.

Speaker 11 (16:49):
Twenty two they still changed. They sitting before they played
in Michigan.

Speaker 1 (16:55):
It doesn't exonerate you if you still got the information illegally.

Speaker 3 (17:02):
You know, I'd like to hear a coach from an
opponent of Michigan saying, a, we got the signals, we
got the coaching, we got the host plan, we got
the game plan, and we got it from this guy.
That would end everything. Speak up and do it? Have
a pair, have a have a.

Speaker 1 (17:17):
You know, you don't know what the Big Ten has
as far as evidence. That's why Jim Harball didn't about
phase when I cut a deal? Yes, but I'm giving.

Speaker 2 (17:27):
You a reason.

Speaker 1 (17:28):
An he cut a deal? What what was this reagion
of cutting a deal if he didn't do anything wrong?
What would what would be?

Speaker 3 (17:32):
Because his attorney probably said, look, if we cut a deal,
you don't have to go through the agony of going
with the court and all that garbage. We'll get a
deal like, well, i'll give you the wins. When the
team wins, you'll come back. Everything will be good. If
you beat Ohio State, you'll coach in the title game,
and you'll coach in the championship game. That was the deal.
And we still don't know if they have the evidence.
They might, but I can't tell you here now either,

(17:53):
could you? You can't tell me that the Big Ten
office has evidence don't eight ninety nine on Fox Pete.

Speaker 2 (18:00):
From New Mexico. You know, on the Couple on Fox
Sports Radio.

Speaker 10 (18:02):
Happy Thanksgiving fellows, mister Parker, how are you? I love
the Couple. Hope you guys are doing great.

Speaker 2 (18:07):
Oh, we're doing great.

Speaker 5 (18:09):
You know.

Speaker 2 (18:09):
I love being on on a Black Friday. Absolutely could
be fine.

Speaker 10 (18:13):
So you know, it's a litmus test for Ohios Day
and Brian Day, right, because even if they had changed
the signals last year, doesn't mean that they didn't have
all the information for what the signals were, just kind
of like having a whole checklist of what all the
icons and and all the characters were. So it makes
you wonder exactly what's gonna happen tomorrow, and makes you
wonder in the last couple of years if someone was
on the sideline banging a drum every now and then

(18:34):
on in Aaron Arbor on the road too.

Speaker 1 (18:37):
It's gonna be interesting because if Michigan Andy gets throttled tomorrow,
it's bad.

Speaker 2 (18:43):
Ben, It's gonna look bad, am I Right? Will you
admit that?

Speaker 5 (18:46):
Right?

Speaker 13 (18:46):
Hey?

Speaker 2 (18:46):
It look bad? Right? But I will tell you this.
I mean, you talk about Hiost.

Speaker 3 (18:49):
They got a pretty good team I mean no, maybe
Minnesota thirty seven to three last week. I mean they
pounded him last week, so you know, if they lose,
I mean that's but I will tell you this, if
Michigan throttles Ohio State, that'll look worse.

Speaker 2 (19:03):
That would look worse for me.

Speaker 1 (19:04):
I mean that, No, Ryan Day would probably lose his gig. Okay,
go to the sideline and that would be three losses
in a row. That would not be good for Ryan Day.
Eight exactly eight seven, seven ninety nine on Fox Tony
from LA You're on the couple on Fox Sports.

Speaker 14 (19:18):
Radio in Los Angeles. We want Ohio State all the way.
We want Harbaugh to leave Michigan and come to the Rams.

Speaker 2 (19:24):
There you go, Okay, you go. You gotta sail on.
Khaki's out here. Huh.

Speaker 14 (19:30):
Rams need a college quarterback and McVeigh cannot deal with
college quarterbacks. He's not going to deal with a young guy.
And Harbard can do it.

Speaker 1 (19:38):
All right, even though he's a cheater. If they found
out that he's cheating, that that doesn't bother.

Speaker 2 (19:42):
You at all.

Speaker 14 (19:43):
No, it's college who cares?

Speaker 13 (19:45):
Oh?

Speaker 2 (19:45):
Is that how it goes? Really? Oh?

Speaker 5 (19:47):
Well?

Speaker 8 (19:47):
Wow?

Speaker 2 (19:47):
Okay, so you lot a cheat? In college. Everybody has
their own way.

Speaker 1 (19:51):
Tony, I hear you. I disagree with you. I hate
that cheating doesn't matter. Eight seven, seven ninety nine on Fox.

Speaker 3 (19:58):
All right, Mike from Nashville on a couple of foxbuts
ready hold Michael.

Speaker 11 (20:03):
Hey, guys, how's it going tonight?

Speaker 2 (20:04):
Doing great?

Speaker 5 (20:06):
The way?

Speaker 11 (20:06):
Big games tomorrow? I was gonna throw another little wrench
at this. Who are who paid for the guy to
travel to video everything? Who paid to get into the games?
I went to a game at the Shoe for Illinois
and I think it was about eight hundred dollars a ticket.

Speaker 2 (20:23):
My goodness, great, where funny come from?

Speaker 1 (20:26):
Well, of course they claim that he did it all
on his own, and none of it cars, none of
it makes any sense, you know what? And Mike kids
the other thing, if he's on the Michigan staff, didn't
Jim Harball go, Well, where where is he on Saturdays?

Speaker 2 (20:39):
How come he's not here? Where is he? Nobody knew
where he was he went?

Speaker 1 (20:42):
The games are played on Saturday when Michigan's are playing.

Speaker 3 (20:45):
But the rules are so ridiculous. Anyway, let me ask
you this. Both of you guys say, I'm a big
Jim hop Off. I like him, say, next year, I
get a hold of their schedule and every Saturday I'll
go to one of their opponents and take the game
that said him the tape. Is that illegal? According to
the Nancy double A, it is right. But if I'm
not getting paid, I could do it. Who's gonna stop me?
Who's gonna know he was he's a member of the staff.

(21:06):
What it's all my works rights?

Speaker 2 (21:08):
Again? But what if I did it?

Speaker 1 (21:10):
No, but my point is not a freelance guy. It's
a guy who's on staff for them. Come on, claims
he didn't know he was doing that.

Speaker 11 (21:17):
Guy's running his mouth somewhere and talking to you know,
trying to be a big man, and that's how that
would get out. I would say that they've made it
so incredibly hard you can't lose, so people are gonna
do things are not supposed to do because you've got
to win. So I'm I'm glad they're playing the game,
and I hope it works out with hardball. And you know,

(21:39):
you guys have an awesome night, great show.

Speaker 2 (21:41):
Thank you, Thanks, I appreciating Michael.

Speaker 1 (21:45):
Squeeze in one more Andy, we got one more guy,
Let's do it.

Speaker 3 (21:48):
Andrea from Massachusetts on the couple on Fox Bus.

Speaker 5 (21:51):
Ready, Andre, how you doing?

Speaker 12 (21:53):
Thanks for taking the call. Listen. I can't pile on
the Wolverines right now. I just simply, I just simply
can't do it. They get a lot of bad pr
but we all know it's two things. Number one of
the bottom line speaks the loudest. That's money. Michigan's bringing
millions and millions and millions dollars into the Big Ten.
Some other coaches might have sour grapes, but the bottom
line is the eyeballs are going to be on Michigan

(22:16):
to see these games. The revenue is what drives everything.
Second thing in college, in college athletices across the board.

Speaker 5 (22:22):
I'm sorry. If he ain't cheating, you ain't trying.

Speaker 1 (22:24):
Okay now, but once you get up, but once you
get caught, then you can't.

Speaker 2 (22:27):
My point, Andre, I hear you.

Speaker 1 (22:29):
Okay, you can cheat, but once you get caught, it's
like everybody's driving eighty on the freeway. When they pull
you over, your defense can't beat at the other nine
cars next to you were driving eighty two.

Speaker 3 (22:39):
You're the one about if.

Speaker 1 (22:43):
He was cut, he be fired. He's saying that he
didn't know about it. Come on and do you buy that?
Come on, well you're talking about Rick Patino got they
got prostitutes in the college basketball doing.

Speaker 3 (22:54):
I'm with you, because the CEO the busy has to
know everything that's going on in the business.

Speaker 2 (22:59):
He didn't know about it. That's that's what he said. Well,
you could be at five for that. Then if you
put neligence.

Speaker 3 (23:04):
No, I'm saying you could sure, and he should know
about it because it's his program. He's responsible for everything
that goes on in that program, top to bottom.

Speaker 1 (23:12):
All right, Coming up next, Mark Schneider wrote a book
about Michigan. I can't wait to talk to Mark about
the book and about the situation at Michigan.

Speaker 2 (23:20):
Will do that much more. But first let's get you
caught up with mister Steve de Seger. Hi, Steve, Hello,
and Rob.

Speaker 13 (23:29):
You brought up the analogy of if you know what
pitch is coming, which reminds me of the most in retrospect,
the most obvious game where the Houston Astros cheated when
they beat Clayton kersher on the World Series in Game
five because he completely dominated them.

Speaker 2 (23:44):
Before and half night in La Right, Yeah.

Speaker 13 (23:47):
Because the cheating was only in the Houston stadium with
that system.

Speaker 1 (23:51):
With what they were doing, and that that's my point.
And even when they beat a Waldis Chapman in Game seven,
you remember you had to walk off home run. If
you'll look at a Waldis Chapman, I'll too big it
shotman go hop what like it.

Speaker 2 (24:03):
Couldn't believe in.

Speaker 13 (24:04):
He was last. Couldn't believe them out.

Speaker 2 (24:06):
Right to believe that day like they knew what was coming.

Speaker 13 (24:09):
But the Kersha thing, This is the guy who has
almost three thousand strikeouts in his career and a few
strikeout titles by that time, and he had dominated them
with eleven k's in Game one when it was a
home game and he was throwing a few scoreless innings
at Houston, suddenly added nowhere they get the bats going
and it winds up a thirteen to twelve.

Speaker 2 (24:27):
Astro were exactly right.

Speaker 3 (24:28):
And I still say, why did Major League Baseball do
something about it or take the title away?

Speaker 12 (24:32):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (24:32):
No, NT double A has no problem taking basketball championship
titles away from NC double A.

Speaker 2 (24:36):
Wheah, But that's college thing.

Speaker 1 (24:38):
I know they do that, and I'm never I mean,
you can't you can't miss take away what already happened.

Speaker 2 (24:44):
I mean, he.

Speaker 13 (24:44):
Enjoined me to the commissioner's comment recently that he regrets
not punishing the players who were the guilty parties, is
he you know, because we're not a league and we're
not a government. We can't indict people. They're not going
to talk if we don't say okay.

Speaker 2 (25:00):
But you wanted to get to the root of it,
like what was going on, and that's where you had
to give them. So now we know, yeah, we know
what was going on.

Speaker 13 (25:06):
What was going on is Kershawn who throws the breaking
ball to get the strikeouts, threw over fifty breaking balls
and got one swinging mists the entire game because they
knew what was coming exactly. You hear something, you know,
to lay off the pitch. Well, the Texas Longhorns that
are hosting Texas Tech, they were up ten to nothing
late first quarter. Tech has just scored extra pointal make

(25:27):
it ten to seven. And Penn State, ranked eleventh, is
playing Michigan State in Detroit. It is snidney lyon six
nothing about five and a half minutes to go in
the second quarter. By the way, on the pregame show,
the athletic did mention as far as who's going to
be the next Michigan State coach. This report that Oregon

(25:48):
State's head coach Jonathan Smith has emerged as the top
target for the Michigan State vacancy. Nothing finalized yet, but
the search is in its final stages and should be
done by the end of this weekend and quote just
about to start up on Fox TV the top ten
matchup of Oregon State at Oregon earlier number nine Missouri
now ten and two got to win easily at Arkansas

(26:10):
forty eight to fourteen. Thirteenth ranked Oklahoma a sixty nine
to forty five winner against TCU seventeenth ranked Iowa on
a field goal in the final play one thirteen to
ten at Nebraska, which committed three turnovers and thirteenth rank
Twulane will host its conference title game in about a
week after beating u T San Antonio twenty nine sixteen
tomorrow on Fox TV. Number two Ohio State at number

(26:33):
three Michigan noon Eastern time. NFL's Washington Fire defensive coordinator
Jack del Rio today and the Miami Dolphins got to
win at the Jets thirty four to thirteen. Rahem moster
two fourth quarter TDS twenty carries ninety four yards back
to you.

Speaker 2 (26:48):
All right, Steve, thank you appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (26:50):
It is the odd Couple on a fuck you flashback Friday,

(27:30):
bring in our next guest here on the ID Couple,
Mark Schneider, who has written a new book about Michigan
and his two authors right called Mountaintop, The Inside Story
of Michigan's nineteen ninety seven National Championship title. And Mark Schneider,
Welcome to the program. Say hello hello to Andy Furman.

Speaker 5 (27:53):
Hey, Andy, Hey Ron, thank you guys having me absolutely.

Speaker 1 (27:57):
I've known Mark for a gazillion years. We worked in
the roight together and great to have you on the show.
Who else wrote the book with you?

Speaker 5 (28:04):
Mark Nick bomb Gardner who who works for the Athletic
now he's a football writer and we both had covered
Michigan for extensively in the.

Speaker 1 (28:14):
Past, and tell us about let's talk about Michigan and
then we'll get back to the book and what's in it.

Speaker 2 (28:19):
And we know that was their national championship.

Speaker 1 (28:21):
But big game tomorrow, I mean it could have huge ramifications.
If Ryan Day loses three losses in the road in
Michigan could cost him his job. No, Jim Harbor on
the side line, it would be a bad look to lose.
And if Ohio State blows out Michigan, then you wonder
maybe Michigan doesn't have the signals and doesn't have any

(28:45):
advantage anymore.

Speaker 2 (28:47):
Where are you on this whole scandal?

Speaker 5 (28:50):
Well, there are so many different subplots here, but this
is you know, obviously everyone's focused on this, but this
has been the case with Ohio State Michigan for fifty years. Right,
There's always something going on. This is why they call
it hate week, right, because these teams they each other,
they each other rob you know from when they lived
here and everyone's just trying to get an edge all
the time. I think that it's interesting. There's a little

(29:10):
bit of it. Obviously, with Jim not being on the sidelines,
it's going to be an interesting dynamic. But I think
that what Michigan has shown over these last couple weeks
without him is that they're still a great team. And
you know, he's he may have assembled the team, but
the players are the ones who play, and obviously their
focus and being able to still win without him shows
that they're able to put some of these distractions aside.

Speaker 2 (29:31):
Bravo, Bravo, Mark. I love that.

Speaker 3 (29:33):
Okay, I have a feeling in my mind that Michigan,
the state of is like ground zero for football. So
I'm going to ask you this question, in your mind,
what's worse the alleged cheating incident now at the University
of Michigan, the football program, Well, Michigan State firing a
coach for sex scandal.

Speaker 14 (29:50):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (29:50):
We a lot going on in the States this year, right,
just in four months, and it's been something every day constantly.
I mean, I think that you know, these are different things.
One obviously a person now issue. One, you know, something
that is a competitive issue from what people understand. But
I think that these are the things that, you know,
in our social media world just get amplified, right, you know,
little things that may have been overlooked years ago and

(30:13):
been not gotten so much attension, they just get start running.
And then people have all their theories and their relegations
and they don't hear all the facts. And I think
that once those things come out, you know, then people
are able to pass judgments. But it seems like, you know,
both of these are kind of ongoing things, and neither
one is fathing.

Speaker 2 (30:28):
The universities in glory, no doubt.

Speaker 1 (30:31):
Longtime sports writer and author Mark Schneider as a new
book out about Michigan called Mountaintop. We'll get to that.
The other thing I wanted to ask you about Michigan,
and let's talk about it. This nineteen ninety seven was
when they shared the national championship. And I mean, I
have a running joke on the show. I always say,

(30:51):
you know, Michigan hasn't won a national championship since Moby
Dick was a guppy. How does a school like Michigan
have a shared now national championship? And that's the only
one with a great coach like bo cham Beckler, that
they've never won. I haven't won national championship outright in
a gazillion years. Mark.

Speaker 5 (31:11):
Yeah, if you look through all those years, you know
each time it's just one little thing. I mean, there
were so many years they were ranked up there and
it's just one little game or one little moment that
really derails the Look at the TCU game last year.
You know, obviously Michigan had such a great team. They
get to that game and they play their worst game
on the biggest stage. It just happened. You'll get the
twenty sixteen when it was one versus two and you

(31:32):
got the Ohio State against Michigan in Columbus and Michigan
loses by three points in a game that you know,
the day after beaucham Beckler died. I mean, there's just
all these flash points throughout all those years where their
expectations were great and then they weren't able to come through.
And that's what makes this team, the nineteen ninety seven
team so special is expectations weren't great. That was one

(31:52):
of those years they were ranked number fourteen and they
came into the season and then once they got rolling
you know, they had this team that no one expected
to do any thing but then went perfect all the
way through.

Speaker 3 (32:02):
You know, walk the shame of it all is both
these teams are in the Big Ten East and they're
both eleven and zero, and the team that loses tomorrow
will not go to the conference title game. The team
that loses tomorrow will not go to the college football
Championship game. And I think that's a crime, I really do,
because these teams are the top four team should be
including the top four teams in the country, and they are,

(32:24):
And why doesn't the Big Ten maybe move one of
those teams to the other side and get rid of Iowa.

Speaker 5 (32:29):
Well, next year, they're not gonna have divisions, so they're
gonna have eighteen teams in a big old ball rolling
around and like it's gonna be a big mess. But
we'll see what happens. But at least with the twelve
team playoff, you know, it'll be a lot easier. Yeah,
the next week, you know, that could be really ugly
to matter who wins tomorrow. And I think that's just
the nature. I don't think that, you know, the Big
Ten West has been years since they've won one of

(32:50):
these games Wisconsin, I think one one over has State
one year and they got Michigan State. Maybe, but really
it's been a long time and that's the dominance of
the web sided nature of the league, and that's why
they want to go away from divisions. With eighteen teams,
it'll be pretty messy, but I think that they feel
at least they're going to get their two best teams
in that future weekend.

Speaker 1 (33:08):
Now, how about this, And people are saying that this
is it for Harball, regardless that he's going back to
the NFL, He's going to be done at Michigan. Is
that what you're feeling or hearing what people say? It
like his commonplace?

Speaker 5 (33:22):
Well, first of all, I think the first step there
is that he needs to have an offer from an
NFL team, right, I mean, there may be a lot
of jobs, but someone's got to offer him the job
for him to have somewhere to go. And in terms
of Jim, you know, just put yourself in his shoes,
you know, whatever is happening with the various investigations. There
are three ongoing investigations into the Michigan football program right now.
You know, there's the one with him, there's the one

(33:43):
with the currents with the signs. There was the one
about the offensive coordinator who with the computer crimes, and
all of those are still open, so potentially there's penalties
down the road for whoever, for him, for the program whatever.
So you think, if you're in his position and you
can get away from all that, go and coach in
the NFL, where you know, you are one of the
you've got one of the great records of any coach.

(34:05):
Even though it's a short tenure. You know, you probably
take it, I guess, but I mean, I don't have
any insight into his thinking. But you know, just as
someone who looks at what's coming down the road to
you and you see an outlet, you know, it seems
like that makes a lot of sense.

Speaker 1 (34:17):
All right, last thing, tell us more about Mountain Top
where people can get it, and uh, you know why
people should take a work at.

Speaker 5 (34:24):
This, Thanks Rob. Yeah. Mountaintop is the story of the
nineteen ninety seven National Championship team. And really it's the team,
as I said, was a bunch of people who other
than Charles Woodson, really no one really knew who they were.
And then you look back. Now they have three Pro
Football Hall of famers Charles Woods and Steve Hutchinson and
Tom Brady will be obviously in there though they were
all on the team, and they've had thirty three guys

(34:46):
who played in the NFL. But the story really is
not about how great those players were. It's more about
the things that happened behind the scenes. Michigan fans with
their only title in a seventy five year period. You know,
they all love this team. This is the team that
they all feel this passion for until this team. Currently,
if this team wins the championship, obviously there's over another
but otherwise this is just the one. It capped at

(35:07):
the Rose Bowl. They beat the hardest schedule in the country.
But really is the behind the scenes the stories. Our
stories in the book were wonderful because people told them
these We talked over one hundred people, and with all
these guys, you know, they were really ready to let
lose twenty five years later. So you know, there's stories
about dorm fires and fights with a fraternity, and there's

(35:28):
guys who got almost got kicked out of school, and
I mean there's all stuff that you know, all the
stuff that happened in the games and the spectacular moments
and games, of course, but you get to see it
from the player's perspective and what they lived and all
these behind the scenes things. You don't get that too
often in terms of hearing about the college football away
from the games. And really we tried to weave it
all together from the lowest points you know of building

(35:51):
up from the Cordell Stuart Hail Mary nineteen ninety four,
all the way through their championship and over Ryan Leaf
in the Washington State in the Rose Bowl.

Speaker 2 (35:59):
Well, check it out, go pick it up. What a
great gift for Christmas. Story Mountaintop, let me tell you.

Speaker 5 (36:04):
Go ahead, Michigan, nineteen ninety seven, book dot com.

Speaker 1 (36:07):

Speaker 2 (36:19):
Always, man, no doubt, Thank you buddy. All right, of course,
come on, what do you think?

Speaker 10 (36:24):
What do you mean?

Speaker 2 (36:25):
I work at a Jewish shoe store? And then queens
are you kidding? All right? All right, all right, Buba
Mizuba kill me?

Speaker 1 (36:36):
Allright, guys, thanks, all right, coming up next, Bill Belichick's future.

all over this Bill Belichick future. I still do. I'm
with Tom Brady. I'm not with Tom Brady most of
the time, but I'm with Tom Brady. I don't see

(37:51):
Bill Belichick anywhere else other than New England. I'll have
to see it to believe it. But what do you
think about the future of Bill Belichick and where he
should go?

Speaker 3 (38:00):
Oh?

Speaker 2 (38:00):
Is he going to go somewhere? What are your thoughts?

Speaker 3 (38:02):
I think Robert Kraff right now is negotiating, perhaps through
the media, on a buyout, on a let go of
Bill Belichick. To do it in a class sort of way,
you can't fire the guy. The guy, in my mind,
is the greatest coach ever to coach in the National
Football League. He's got three hundred and thirty one career wins.
He needs sixty more wins to tie the great late
Don Shula. Okay, so whether it's the Washington Commanders, the Buccaneers,

(38:26):
the Panthers, the Chargers, anybody out there wants him. But
I think they're gonna have to give up something to
the New England Patriots to get him. But I think
number one he won't be there. He doesn't want to
go through this garbage you get with no quarterback. And
number two he wants to break that record. I don't
blame him. He wants to be the guyone back anyway
for three years to break the record. Olms, Well, he'll

(38:46):
break the record, but he won't break it in New England.

Speaker 1 (38:50):
Not at this rate. Right, this seemed like unbelievable. So
you really believe he's gonna be somewhere next year? What
you got though, what do you think?

Speaker 3 (38:59):
I think it's a Washington, I really do. I think Washington,
but perhaps maybe the Charge. But I think Washington's in
the league. So I think the new ownership wants him.
You know, I think we talked earlier today that the
coaching staff, that del Real's gone. I think he's just
the beginning of the of the pegs to fall. And
I think the head coach will be going to be
the fourth consecutive non winning season in Washington. So I

(39:21):
think there's a possibility. Plus it's not that difficult a division.
Why would you go there? That's Sam Howe? Really is that?
Is that where Bill Belichick's going? Now, Sam Howe's gonna
get you to Don Sulder? You know, look at his stats.

Speaker 1 (39:35):
I'm just saying, is he really really, really why not
waiting for the Chargers job where Justin Herbert is a quarterback?

Speaker 3 (39:42):
Well, you know, I'm not going yeah, And I don't
know if Bill's gonna have the luxury of like picking
and choosing, you know, where he wants to go. It
could be the first one that comes out him. He's
gonna go after. But I'd like to see him gonna
charges because justin Herbert, I think you've got a better chance.

Speaker 1 (39:56):
Brendon's Staley has to be fired, doesn't he Come on,
there's no doubt.

Speaker 2 (39:59):
I mean, that team is better than the record that
they have.

Speaker 1 (40:01):
They got too many good players, no doubt, right, I
just I don't.

Speaker 2 (40:07):
I just Washington, that division, the history of Washington.

Speaker 1 (40:17):
I just really Bill, like, you gotta be very careful
to move on and be in a bad place without
a quarterback. He's already experienced that. In this man's league,
in this NFL, you can't get anything done without a quarterback.
That's why I'm saying I would be holding out Brandon

(40:37):
Staley's gonna be gone. Hey give me a quarterback, I would.
The sell is I've won six super Bowls. If you
give me a quarterback, I can get the defense righted.
That's what the Chargers need, the defense to be righted.
When Tom Brady won those super Bowls and Bill Belichick,
they had the top five defense.

Speaker 2 (40:56):
All those years.

Speaker 1 (40:57):
It wasn't just tom Brady when they beat the Rams
the last time, and Tom Brady no touchdowns and had
to break in that Super Bowl.

Speaker 2 (41:06):
People forget that.

Speaker 3 (41:08):
And he never really had a Hall of Fame receiver.
Who did he have honestly throughout his entire career as
Hall of Fame receivers. Really it was great defense and
Tom Brady, you know, directing the offense with no real
superstars offensive side of the ball.

Speaker 2 (41:22):
Right, That's what I'm saying.

Speaker 1 (41:24):
So I just if I'm Bill Belichick, I'd have to
have an established quarterback to any team I'd want to
go to.

Speaker 3 (41:31):
I just didn't argue with me about the fact that
I said he's the greatest coach ever, the coach of
the National Football.

Speaker 2 (41:35):
Well, I don't know about that. He cheated? Oh okay,
well here we could cheat it. I'm sorry.

Speaker 3 (41:41):
You know, look, the term cheating is broad, Ben, It's
a broad term and it goes over a long way.

Speaker 2 (41:48):
You take video of someone, you can come.

Speaker 1 (41:50):
All right, he cheated. All right, Hey, our number three
is coming up here on the couple. So you know
what you need to do, right, You need to stick
and stay to believe.

Speaker 2 (42:00):
The greatest takes in the US of a m.
