Mario Lopez.

Speaker 2 (00:02):
It's up, Mario Lopez joining me now on Zoom stand
up comic Steve Trevino. Welcome to show Man. How are you?

Speaker 1 (00:09):
I'm good man. I'm just surprised to find out that
you're a Mexican.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
What when I was trending on X everything that's so
wild with with uh with such an Anglo name like
Mario Lopez too right, you know it was.

Speaker 1 (00:24):
Got Mario Lopez. I can't believe he's Mexican.

Speaker 2 (00:26):
I'll bear he's so wild, funny as saying my dad
was like wait, what craziest see first generation too.

Speaker 1 (00:33):
By the way, Mario, I got to tell you, man,
you know, we we live very parallel lives, and you
are such an inspiration and a hard worker and a
dad and a husband and and you know I do
jiu jitsu. You do jiu jitsu. You know I obviously
do not have the body you have, but I don't work.
I don't I do I work at night.

Speaker 2 (00:52):
Hey man, good for you, that's very cool, very cool. Well,
I know you got a new special congratulations on that.
It's called Simple Man. It's got to feel good seeing
that on Netflix top ten.

Speaker 1 (01:04):
Oh now, yeah, I mean I woke up. You know,
it released on Tuesday. I woke up. My wife's kicking me. Well,
first of all, my wife ended up in People magazine?
Who is Steve Charinho's wife? And then we woke up
to the fact that it was number five, and you know,
we celebrated as a family because it's just such a
cool thing. And you know, it really is. I mean,

(01:24):
it dropped down to six today, but it'll we'll creep
it back up.

Speaker 2 (01:29):
Dude, that's incredibly impressive considering all the content that's out there.
That's that's awesome. Man. Good for you. What in is
part of the title?

Speaker 1 (01:37):
Well, you know, I do live a simple life, and
I am a simple man. And you know, I always
say that I'm gonna I'm a below average man married
to an above average woman, and I just work hard
to keep her happy, you know. And I am a
simple man, and the little things mean the most to me.
You know. I started jiu jitsu because I wanted to
coach my son. Oh wow, my sons. My son's in

(02:00):
jiu jitsu. And I went to the dojo and I said, well,
how can I coach him? They go, you got to
be a blue belt, And I said, Okay, I'll do that. Well,
Mario four years.

Speaker 2 (02:09):
Later, good for you. Well, that's funny because that's exactly
the same reason. How why I got into it. He
was too small to take him to the boxing gyms,
and I grew up wrestling and stuff, and I thought
I was a little too old to kind of get
into it. But I figured, Okay, I'll take him. He
could start doing jiu jitsu. And then I'm like, well,
I want to learn with him, be able to coach
him and stuff. And then I got into it. And
once I got into it, I fell in love with it.

(02:31):
So good for you. That's that's ironic. What is Are
you a blue belt right now?

Speaker 1 (02:35):
I'm a blue belt right now and you know doing
two three times a week right on train? I trained
extreme in your Bromfles, Texas. It is a Troy Dorsey Jim. Yeah,
and it is. It is mind blowing? How it? You know?
You like me? I'm always busy, I'm always working. I'm
always thinking about my wife, my family. But that hour

(02:55):
that you get to spin on the mat.

Speaker 2 (02:57):
Is you're exactly exactly you got to focus. I love
that and you're exactly what you're doing. Gee or no,
gate both all.

Speaker 1 (03:03):
Gee, you know, I'm not trying to win any fights
on the streets. I want to I want to truly
learn the art. And I think they Gie's the way
to the way to go. I saw a video of
you the other day doing a dars on somebody and
I was like, dude, I don't know if I can
handle that. Mario.

Speaker 2 (03:19):
Man, it's fun. Man, I love it.

Speaker 1 (03:22):
Thank you. Wait for Originally, I grew up in South Texas,
like the Corpus Christie area. Oh yeah, Portland and and
again I grew up very simple and very uh normal,
and and I want my kids to grow up the
same way. Even though you know my son he walks
through the airport and goes, when do we go to
the lounge? Dad? Who is this kid? Right?

Speaker 2 (03:43):
Exactly? And what did what did your parents do down
in Corpus.

Speaker 1 (03:48):
My dad pipe fitter, welder, hardworking dude, blue collar guy.
We actually dedicate this special to the hardworking people of America.
And at the end of the special, I have thousands
of fans that submitted work pictures and we have all
their pictures because of my dad and my mom. And
I also wanted to put a positive image of us

(04:10):
latinos in the world.

Speaker 2 (04:12):
Good for you, Good for you. Yeah, man, no, we
are very much like my dad worked for the city too.
My mom the phone company. A very blue collar and
I love Let you keep it in the family. Because
your wife directed the special, right.

Speaker 1 (04:22):
Yeah, she she directs me at home and she directs
me on city.

Speaker 2 (04:26):
You're good to take direction, dude.

Speaker 1 (04:27):
The way it works is like when you meet a
new couple. If your wife likes her and you don't
like him, right, you're hanging out.

Speaker 2 (04:35):
You're hanging out. It doesn't matter exactly.

Speaker 1 (04:37):
Exactly if you like him and she doesn't like her.

Speaker 2 (04:41):
That guy, You're exactly right. You can't kick it. No,
it's so important. Oh it's the worst. You got to
get him. You got to get him to meet and
get along that way, you can understand that exactly. Is
there a joke that she ever vetos or says, hey,
you got to knock that off.

Speaker 1 (04:55):
Yeah, yeah, it's not happening, right, So you know, us
guys are sitting there like, oh, man, I hope, I
hope this playdate we set up is going well for
these girls because I hang out with.

Speaker 2 (05:04):
You again exactly. You also have a podcast. Steve Travino
and Captain Evil. That's a fun title. What do you
all talk about on there?

Speaker 1 (05:13):
Life? You know, being parents, being husband and wife. You know,
I talk about the wife so much in my act.
I wanted to give her a voice, and I wanted
people to be able to get into our lives and
see from her perspective how we live life. And it's man,
it's turned out to be, to be honest with you,
kind of marriage there before us. Yeah, we're having real conversations,

(05:35):
but we also know people are watching, and when people
are watching, you behave.

Speaker 2 (05:39):
Yourself exactly exactly. It turns out to be therapeutic. Yeah,
I got three kids. How many kids you got? Holiday?

Speaker 1 (05:46):
I got two kids. I got an eight year old
he's the jiu jitsu baseball player, and then my daughter's three.
And I got to tell you, Mario, I did not
know that I would love being a girl dad like
I do.

Speaker 2 (05:58):
Yeah, it's fun.

Speaker 1 (06:00):
And not only that, my wife is exactly like her,
and she is exactly like my wife. And now my
wife is getting the dose of her own medicine.

Speaker 2 (06:09):
So now you got two women telling you what to do.

Speaker 1 (06:11):
Yeah, pretty much. And my wife's like, why do you
give her everything, right, I go, why I give you everything?
You're not mad?

Speaker 2 (06:17):
Exactly?

Speaker 1 (06:18):
Are watching my wife in the morning, Go, Delilah, don't
change shoes, Delilah, don't change outfits. You're gonna make me late.
And I'm like, oh, yeah, how does it feel?

Speaker 2 (06:29):
Yeah, exactly exactly what gets worse for her later on? Trusty,
I know you're kicking off a bunch of tour dates.
You got any favorite places to perform on stage?

Speaker 1 (06:43):
Vegas is probably my favorite. You know, I'm a huge
fight fan. Yeah, I love the town. I love being
on stage in Vegas and having drinks with the wife
afterwards and hanging out. You know, one of my dreams.
I mean, you know, growing up, me and my dad,
all we did was watch boxing. Yeah, yeah, Tuesday night.
You know, I was actually performing when Gonelo was fighting,

(07:04):
and I was able to get my dad ringside, and
you know that was just such a special moment. Yeah
for me, dad. You know. So you know, as you
know you're a boxing fan as well. When you grow
up and all you hear is from the beautiful MGM,
you know, And yeah, I just love Vegas, smiling my
favorite town.

Speaker 2 (07:20):
That's awesome, man. Yeah, Wow, it's it's a trip and
uncanny how much we got in common and all this stuff. Man, well,
I look forward to meeting you in person. Brother. Congratulations
on everything you've got going on. Keep up the great
work and listen. You can stream Simple Man right now
on Netflix. Steve, thanks for hanging out. You still kicking
in Texas? Huh, that's still home.

Speaker 1 (07:41):
Yeah. When you come visit, man, come home and bring
the family. We'll go to my compound and we'll roll
in my jiu jitsu gym in my backyard and we'll
have a good time.

Speaker 2 (07:49):
Yeah. Oh damn, you got one in your backyard, right, good,
right on? All right, brother, take care of it. Nice
meet you. Pleasure Wow with Mario Lopez
