Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, you know this is the Doug Gottlieb Show.
Heres in the Bonus with Doug Gottlieb.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
What.

Speaker 3 (00:12):
Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio, How you doing, kids?

Speaker 4 (00:20):
How we doing? How you be?

Speaker 5 (00:25):
What you be doing?

Speaker 3 (00:28):
A lot to get to here on the Doug Gottlieb
Show in the Bonus Podcast. What a crazy weekend the
NBA right where the NBA has this rare ability to
where you watch a couple of games and you come
up with.

Speaker 5 (00:41):
And you come up with.

Speaker 3 (00:44):
An assumption of facts, and then you watch a couple
other games you're like, wait, what I thought before is
completely opposite. Minnesota in Denver is just that Like, did
you think that Mike Malone wasn't a great coach, he
wasn't gonna make adjustments? Do you think these players weren't
gonna make adjustments? So, but I thought the most telling
game of the day was when the Knicks got blown

(01:05):
out by the Pacers in Game four. The final score
is one twenty one ninety nine, and it wasn't even
really that close, and their starters, and they played their
starters a lot. Mints only had thirty nine points in
the game four loss. This actually relates to me from

(01:29):
this perspective. This is this story I'm going to share
with you is one of the reasons I got into
sports radio when I in nineteen ninety six. In nineteen
ninety seven, I was enrolled at a junior college in
Heine Beach, California called Golden West College J.

Speaker 5 (01:49):
Dubbs, and I had.

Speaker 3 (01:57):
My girlfriend at the time was like my high schoo girlfriend.
She went to UC Santa Barbara. And my brother was
an assistant coach at cal Poly San Luis Obispo. So
I was living at a home with my parents. I
was going to Golden West College. My girlfriend was in
Santa Barbara, my brother was in San Luis Obispo. So

(02:18):
most weekends I'd be done with classes on Thursday or
Usday on Friday and we would have the junior college
team would have a game on Friday afternoon. After the game,
I'd get in the car and I would drive to
Santa Barbara. And then on Saturday, I'd drive from Santa

(02:41):
Barbara San Luisbispo, which is another hour and a half.
So it's like a two and a half hour drive
to get to Santa Barbara and then like an hour
and a half drive to get to Sant Laspispo the
next day, and then on Sunday morning, I would drive
back and I would hang out with her in Santa Barbara,
and then Sunday night, I would drive back. On Sunday night,
I would listen to the first ESPN radio show ever.

(03:02):
It was called Game Night. By the way I end up,
my first job at ESPN first three four years was
co hosting Game Night.

Speaker 5 (03:11):
So that was really cool.

Speaker 3 (03:13):
Anyway, they had Chuck Daily on one time on Game Night,
and I'll never forget it. Chuck Daily said. They asked
them the secret to coaching in the NBA and to
being successful being a Hall of Famery one back to
back titles with the Detroit bad Boy Pistons. I said, Look,
in the NBA, there are some nights when your team

(03:35):
just doesn't have it. They just don't have it. They're tired,
they're agitated, they've been playing the road too much, they've
been home too much, something, and they just don't have it.
It's on those nights, those nights when you can lose
your team, and I lose your team, it means they
roll their eyes or not paying attention because you're trying

(03:58):
way way way too hard, way too hard. I believe
that that was what happened with the New York Knicks.
And you can lose your mind and you can go crazy,
or you can try and play your bench players and
just try and get through it right. But that does,

(04:21):
in fact happen. There are nights when you get eviscerated
and it doesn't feel good. But also, if you're in
New York, it's just a game.

Speaker 5 (04:33):
Now.

Speaker 3 (04:33):
You have to win two out of three in order
to win the series, and they have two of them
at home. So I know that the easy perception is, hey,
the Knicks are gassed, the Knicks are done, the Nicks
got blown out. But we've had these thoughts about Indie
going back to the time in New York, and it
stands the reason this is just a one off game,

(04:53):
and maybe the Pacers have a one off game like
that as well.

Speaker 4 (04:56):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio in the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 5 (05:06):
Let's get to what the Fox Says.

Speaker 4 (05:07):
And now what say?

Speaker 5 (05:12):
Here is Paul Pierce talking about the New York Techs Knick.

Speaker 2 (05:16):
Sir there, y'all.

Speaker 6 (05:18):
I'm telling her, they're cooked, cooked there, Paul Piers, We're
gonna take them out the oven, put them on the stove,
cut them up, serve y'all. A couple of places with Dessern. Okay,
let me tell you something. I just didn't think what
they were doing was sustainable. Look at this first three games.
Look at it, Look at this, Look at this Nigga

(05:39):
Key Devin Cinzo was averaging twenty nine points per game.

Speaker 4 (05:44):
Fifty percent from the field.

Speaker 6 (05:47):
Fifty six from three. Josh Hart through the first three
games seventeen points, fifteen rebounds, six assists, sixty five percent
from the field, sixty percent from three. Now, if they
play at that level door the season, that's all NBA.
And with the injuries that the Knicks house sustained, I

(06:08):
just really think the Cinderella run is over for the Knicks.

Speaker 3 (06:13):
Look, it's interesting. Obviously, fatigue plays the factor. Playing on
the road plays a factor. And when you when you
look at those games, the two in New York, Man,
the officiating was a little suspect, maybe more than a
little suspect, and the Knicks kind of survived despite the
fact they had all the energy. I just think it

(06:33):
was an energy letdown. Just sometimes you don't have it.
I don't think it's over because again, if they're a
Cinderella story, what is Indy. Indy's also a Cinderella story.
I just think this is a seven game series. Here's
Dan Patrick talking about the Nuggets.

Speaker 7 (06:50):
When's the last time a defending champ was swept in
a series the following year? But you know, stephen A
was quick to proclaim, you know that all of a sudden,
Minnesota there, Yes they are. That doesn't mean they're ready
to win, or that doesn't mean that Denver is ready
to lose. Like you got to factor that in as well.
And Joker played well, Murray played well, and give credit

(07:13):
to the Nuggets played well start to finish. And if
you're Minnesota, Anthony Edwards gave you forty four. This series
isn't about Anthony Edwards. It's about everybody else. When everybody
else plays well offensively, defensively, then they can beat Denver.
Anthony Edwards by himself will not beat Denver, but give

(07:34):
credit to Denver. You go to Minnesota and you win
an impressive fashion there. Now you go back home supposed
to take care of business in game five.

Speaker 3 (07:43):
Oh, that's only true. You're suppsed to take care of
business in game five completely. But you know what's interesting
about it, it's really really interesting about it is that
you have a dude in Anthony Edwards who was accountable
and like, hey, it was my fault, it wasn't his fault.

(08:06):
Like the Nuggets have made adjustments and their best repressed.
Let's not underestimate Eric go Aaron Gordon and what he's
been able to do, you know, and Aaron Gordon's play
combined with the fact that the Rudy Gobert playoff issue
is a real thing and while he helps you some,

(08:26):
sometimes he can help you. I couldn't be more impressed
by Denver. I don't think this series is over for
either side right, but I do think we're trending the
way of Denver ending it in six because serious momentum
is a real thing, and they seem to have cracked
the code on how to handle the pressure and take
it off of their stars. Here's Colin Kawher talking about

(08:51):
Anthony Edwards and the Michael Jordan comparisons.

Speaker 8 (08:53):
Nobody's saying he's going to go six for six, but
they do share some qualities and that's okay. League would
like another mj The fans want it, the TV networks
want it, the sport wants it. Everybody's craving another Michael Jordan,
especially now the league's got in European. The TV ratings
aren't very good. And we got a little bit of

(09:14):
another Jordan. It was called Kobe Bryant. They sort of
had the same gait, the way they walked initially, how
they talked to him. It was like Kobe was imitating
him and was about eighty five ninety percent of Michael Jordan. Brilliant,
offensively aggressive, could talk a little trash, intimidating, but Aunt similarly,
like Michael Jordan, burst onto the scene after a quick

(09:38):
college career and is impossible to stop. His fast is vertical,
but like Jordan in year four, runs into a much
deeper roster the Nuggets, like Jordan ran into the Celtics
and the Pistons, and Michael just could not get through
those rosters until they got the right coach and the

(09:58):
right teammates. And that's pro probably what Ant will deal
with as well.

Speaker 3 (10:05):
Uh yeah, I mean, like, look, they're different players. I
think part of it is some of their facial features
look similar Hey, great smiles, crazy athletic. I think that
ant Man has a lot of Dominique Wilkins characteristics, although
he's much more of a guard than Dominique was. But
this is a different era, but being from Georgia, there's

(10:25):
some similarities there. That's a powerful, powerful dude, you know.
The one big difference is Jordan wasn't a passer. But
when Jordan was forced to pass in the first NBA
finals he played in, he averaged eleven assists the game.
So it's one of those there were things he didn't
do but he could have done. He just didn't do them,

(10:48):
and when he had to do him he did him.
Makes sense, That's what the Foxs say.

Speaker 1 (10:55):
Say.

Speaker 4 (10:56):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 5 (11:06):
Let's find out who were what is annoying Jason Stewart.

Speaker 4 (11:12):
And now it's your annoying.

Speaker 5 (11:19):
What do you got Jase?

Speaker 9 (11:20):
Let's start with the easy one. There was a football
player for the Texans over the weekend who used to
play for Georgia. His name is Kamari Lasseter and now
he plays for the Texans, and he had this exchange
with a reporter during a press conference kind of brought up.

Speaker 8 (11:40):
A second the culture that was establised in Georgia when
the culture here as well.

Speaker 5 (11:44):
With Demiko gone to Alabama and you're.

Speaker 10 (11:46):
Going to Georgia, what were some similarities that you noticed
between him a coach smart and what they preach.

Speaker 9 (12:01):
Like last week we saw the Roast and like the
best comedians in the history of the world were at
the roast and they got like earned laughs. Their content
was so good that they had to laugh at it.
That was not that was not a joke that should
have been laughed at like that. Could you listen to
the joke again or the laughter again? Yeah. I don't

(12:25):
think him not knowing his coach was from Alabama and
kind of being dismissive about it. I don't think that
that warranted that laughter.

Speaker 5 (12:33):
No, no, not even shut up.

Speaker 9 (12:44):
Overreacting media rooms to the smallest jokes, the most slight
of humor. I think it's an uncomfortable thing people think
they have to laugh to like take away at the
uncomfortableness in the room or something. So the nuggets are
now tied tied to two with the te Wolves and

(13:05):
they're going back to Denver. In our lifetimes, I think
the two most celebrated, most famous voices in our industry
are Charles Barkley and Steven A.

Speaker 11 (13:19):
Smith.

Speaker 9 (13:20):
Last Tuesday, Charles Barkle or no. Last Monday night after
Game two, Charles Barkley said this about the Nuggets.

Speaker 11 (13:27):
This series is a wrap. Minnesota is better than the Nuggets.
The Minnesota Timberwolves off for real. They're gonna sweep the
Devin Nuggets period.

Speaker 9 (13:38):
Stephen A. Smith, I think is one a as far
as like famous people who we celebrate for their opinions,
and he said this on Tuesday.

Speaker 4 (13:47):
Do you know where the brooms are in your house?

Speaker 2 (13:49):
As well?

Speaker 12 (13:50):
The brooms? The brooms is in a couple of closets,
is right, and it's in the pantry. Overday, I got
a closet upstairs. He's got a broomstick in there. Both
of them are being pulled out. I believe the Minnesota
Timberwolves are gonna sweep the defending NBA champions. No shade
on the Devil Nuggets whatsoever.

Speaker 9 (14:06):
You know a guy that I think is underrated in
our business is Kevin Wilds. He's on speak. Oh no,
he's on, Uh, he's on has a producing background and
he really has like thoughtful, measured opinions. He never goes overboard.
He never does hot takes. And he said, where where
are the apologies? Where are the people with the eye?

(14:28):
What was wrong today? Because everybody there were more voices
that said this about the sweep. And it's another reason
why I've said on this podcast, and I think I've
told you personally that when I'm programming content, when I'm
in charge of a network that does content, I'm going
to say no predictions, talk about what has happened and

(14:49):
not about what's going to happen. Otherwise you're just wasting
listeners and viewers time.

Speaker 3 (14:55):
I don't I don't know if I'm going to disagree
with you on the no predictions thing. It's just it's
one of the things actually I believe I do, and
I think Colin Cowhert does as well. He doesn't always
do it, but it's the it's okay to be wrong,
it's okay to be wrong. But the other part too,
it is it's like your pick has to be so
over the top. I would also like to point out

(15:16):
that your boy, that's me pick Denver to win Game three.
I hadn't got a chance to pick game four, but
I feel like this is a lot like that ninety
three Lakers Sun series where they kind of punched him
in the mouth, and now you're seeing Denver kind of
get their stuff together and really start to and it's
still a great season. But you know, look, first take

(15:41):
is for that is that is all about the SoundBite,
That is all about the overreaction, and Barkley is remember
that those comments were when you're coming off of a
game in which the Nuggets were drug at home. But
it looks it's okay to be wrong completely, okay.

Speaker 9 (15:57):
To be wrong you have to. The only thing I'll
take issue there with is that you said first takes
about the reaction. I thought that Stephen they said it
was about journalism.

Speaker 5 (16:05):
Now I mean, he's full of shit.

Speaker 9 (16:07):
Okay. So the MJ comparison, did you see Coach K
this weekend? MJ and Anthony Edwards? Coach K had some
wise words for this debate.

Speaker 4 (16:18):
He has been so insanely good and he's been compared
to Michael Jordan. How do you feel about that comparison?

Speaker 2 (16:23):
Well, I think that people should just slow down on comparisons,
and you know, Jordan's as good as anyone who's ever played.
Anthony Edwards is twenty three years old. Michael Jordan did
it his entire career. Jordan's bigger and a little bit longer.

(16:47):
And but in this day, day and age, Edwards has
a chance to be that Perimeter.

Speaker 9 (17:01):
Superstar, Perimeter superstar. That's kind of yeah, that's not Michael Jordan.
I think this is what we have to force people
to do. I think cal heard triple down on it
today that Anthony Edwards should be compared to Jordan. I
think we need to do this. If if we're going

(17:21):
to make the comparisons, we also need to say that
if the t Walls lose the series, and they might
not lose the series, would Michael Jordan. Did Michael Jordan
ever win the first two games on the road and
lose the series? There?

Speaker 3 (17:33):
It is, well, you know when they when they beat
the Suns a weird one. I don't know if you
know this, but the Steve Kerr told me once and
I had to look it up, that their road record
was actually better than their home record in the playoffs
with with when they won when they won championships, in
that in that second run.

Speaker 5 (17:51):
Sure they did.

Speaker 3 (17:52):
It was really interesting. And if you remember they played
the Suns in Phoenix, and when they played the Sun
in Phoenix, they won the first two on the road,
then lost the next two at home, and or they
lost two out of three of whatever at home, and
then they won Game six in Phoenix, something like that.

Speaker 9 (18:11):
So it's five teams. Five teams in the history of
the NBA have lost their first two games at home
ended up winning the series. None of them included Michael Jordan.
Michael Jordan never lost or never won the first two
on the road and then lost the series. So I
just need people who are making the comparison to ask
that question, would Michael Jordan allow any of his teams

(18:33):
to do that? That's That's it. We've got the overreaction
laughter at simple jokes in the press room, Nuggets dismissors,
and we've got people still making the mj comparison with
Anthony Edwards.

Speaker 5 (18:49):
Wow, who's the most annoying? I think the most in.

Speaker 3 (18:53):
The the Nuggets eliminators there the most annoying because I
have not heard any of them, and there's been a
lot of them say I was wrong, right, I was
wrong or what changed?

Speaker 5 (19:12):
What changed?

Speaker 3 (19:14):
So to those people who swept the Nuggets out of
the playoffs said it was over.

Speaker 11 (19:21):
Yeah, no, I.

Speaker 4 (19:25):
Why are we doing this?

Speaker 1 (19:27):
I do.

Speaker 4 (19:30):
Because we can.

Speaker 9 (19:33):
Somehow, this topic has gotten a full week. First take,
just did the NBA players playing football take this morning
on their show? It's gotten a full week somehow thanks
to Austin Rivers. But Lou Williams had an interesting angle
on his podcast Former NBA or Lou Williams.

Speaker 10 (19:53):
My problem where this conversation is going is I don't
like the fact that the NFL players are saying their
their Their argument is h y'all soft. Yeah yeah, like
y'all flop this and that some of that shit is theater.
And let's be clear, y'all motherfuckers flop too, yeah.

Speaker 8 (20:14):
Too.

Speaker 4 (20:16):
So it's football.

Speaker 10 (20:19):
Is football more than running, jumping, catching, Hell yeah, hell yeah.
It's agility, it's smart, it's it's it's chess. Is being
able to beat your man off the line, trying to
keep somebody in front of you that's trying to beat
you off the line. I respect all of that shit.
I don't take none of that. I don't take none
of that for granted. But when we started getting into
the conversation about basketball players being soft this and that.

(20:41):
It's like, Bro, basketball is way more contact than we
get credits for. Granted, in any sport, football included pussy's
on both sides.

Speaker 5 (20:51):
Bro, I love that.

Speaker 3 (20:55):
He could not have been any better, right, he, lou
Williams could not have been any better. And like, look,
Louis didn't he have both two girlfriends at at a
at a game once? Right, That's that's what Lou Williams
is most famous for, as well as the some of
the other stuff.

Speaker 5 (21:12):
But he nailed that one.

Speaker 3 (21:16):
There are softies on each side, each side, and yeah,
they flop. Two they fake like they're getting held. And
I'll tell you another sport that's really physical that people
don't talk enough about. Soccer, crazy physical. Uh, mikel we
play for you because we can't. Let's get to our

(21:39):
pick of the night.

Speaker 1 (21:42):
Okay, sir, the bet is to you. It's time for
the Pick of the day.

Speaker 3 (21:50):
Pick of the day here on the Doug Gottlieb Show
on Fox Sports Radio. Where do you think it comes from?
Come on, man, It's come from the NBA. Gonna be
big time, right, These these picks are good all right
in the NBA. Tonight, we have Boston taken on Cleveland.

(22:10):
Cleveland's an eight and a half point dog. The Mavericks
are a one and a half point favorite against Oklahoma City.
They're up two games to one. What a crazy turn
turn of events. I do think, I do think that
Boston she lacks Cleveland, she lax them. Cleveland was pushing
them to the limit. I've been told Donovan Mitchell is

(22:33):
not going to play tonight. Okay, Donovan Mitchell not gonna
play tonight. So with that, give me Boston and the
eight and a half points. You're welcome.

Speaker 5 (22:43):
All right. That's it for the other of Modes podcast.

Speaker 3 (22:45):
Check out the radio show every day three to five
Eastern time, twelve to two Pacific on Fox Sports.
