Tirect dot com the way tire buying should be.

Speaker 1 (00:49):
Now, we'll get to a big story of the NFL
coming up in a couple of seconds, but just really quick.
The most entertaining part of tonight's game, other than the
next winning by thirty is all the old Knicks, all
the classic Knicks who came to the game tonight.

Speaker 3 (01:04):
Right. It wasn't just.

Speaker 1 (01:04):
John Starks, Stefan Marbury. They showed on TV all the time.
Latrell Spreewell was there, and Wilson Chandler was there, and
there was so many. I mean they took a big
picture before the game. There's like ten of them who
were there. But watching Marbury and John Starks, you know,
a baseline. At one point, I think John Starks is
going to try to inbound the ball like he got
the ball from family.

Speaker 3 (01:24):
It looked like he was ready to.

Speaker 4 (01:27):
Yeah, he was trying to tag in. There's no question
about it.

Speaker 3 (01:29):
You know who that you know what they look like?

Speaker 1 (01:31):
They look like when when when when I coached mainly soccer,
not not as much softball because the action you know,
up and down for soccer is they looked like they
looked like the dads who liked to be right up
on the sideline and yelling and screaming every time something happens.

Speaker 3 (01:47):
And they're just getting and they're fiving with each other.
They just look like, hey.

Speaker 1 (01:51):
That was a great play by one of my defenders
and the dad is giving up.

Speaker 4 (01:55):
Yeah, croud soccer dad, Yeah, no question about it.

Speaker 1 (01:58):
That's what they looked like. They're dapping with each other
up and like they're spilling popcorn. It's going on the
floor and it starts to reach down and grab McConnell
after a I mean, it's a it's just a circus
at Madison Square Garden. Now the Knicks play, it is.
I mean there's a reason why they say that's the
most famous arena in the world. I mean, it really is.
It was an absolute circus inside to them, and it's

(02:19):
been one since the Knicks have played the playoffs.

Speaker 5 (02:21):
Yeah, and for many many years watching them play was
a circus like effect. Not to mention the many sellouts
of the Ringling Brothers in Barnum and Bailey circus that
used to come into the garden, right, I mean all
of that fun stuff back in the day, some peanuts
and and get after it with some clowns.

Speaker 3 (02:39):
So this is seeing those guys. Yeah, what a great play,
What a.

Speaker 4 (02:43):
Great kind of insane.

Speaker 5 (02:44):
Yeah, it's it really is a great throwback, and you
had some bright moments in the history there. For as
much as we joke about the losing, those guys are
a lot o I know there was a lot of losing.

Speaker 1 (02:57):
There's a lot of losing, but now here we are.

Speaker 5 (03:00):
I mean they're they're heroes to New Yorkers and to
basketball fans and for those who like the junk wack
wax era of trading cards. Plenty of Latrell Spreewell rookie
cards from ninety two to ninety three, uh littered in collections.

Speaker 1 (03:17):
The Knicks in six chance that we're all it was
just such an unbelievable I mean, it's some kind of atmosphere.
And I'll tell you, when Lebron is finished playing, he's
gonna say, do you have any regrets over recruit? And
how is Lebron ever gonna have any regrets? Right other
than not trying during the playoffs a couple of times
with the with the Cavaliers. Is He's gonna say, I
really wish I could have had one season playing in
Madison Square Garden, just one season at some point playing

(03:40):
there with the lights and and and the tap and
the pageantry and the fans, And I really wish I
would have had one season playing there, because that that's
it's really you you can see, it's just a different
it's just a different thing when you watch when you
watch this game and you see all the stars that
are lined up, and stars that that don't just sit
and come watch the game, they will to get involved.

(04:01):
Like that's The difference is, you know, you see stars
come to a lot of games, but it's like, okay,
hey they're here, and you see you see Jack Nicholson
sitting at games, or you would see Tom Hanks sitting
at game.

Speaker 3 (04:10):
You know, you see stars, but everybody comes to Nix
to you.

Speaker 1 (04:12):
It's like they want to play, like they want to get.
You've got Ben Stiller is doing the I see you,
you know, to Reggie Miller before game two and you
have Starks and and Marbury. Time's like, no, we're gonna
get We're gonna be part of this thing. We're not
just gonna come watch a game. We are part of
what's going on here and the energy and the overall atmosphere.

Speaker 3 (04:31):
It's just it's just insane.

Speaker 4 (04:32):
Well i'd be filing assault charges. It still touch me.

Speaker 3 (04:38):
Yeah, yeah, that was a little weird.

Speaker 5 (04:39):
Hands off, Yeah, little we know the history of your
team's get your hands off me right now.

Speaker 1 (04:45):
This is this is this is a way to Okay,
maybe I understand that this is It's still a game.
This is not just some kind of crazy atmosphere where
you get to do whatever he wants.

Speaker 3 (04:53):
It's still a game. It's still a game.

Speaker 5 (04:55):
You still got to stay outside and you know, and
keep your hands to yourself, go and clap as you
need to.

Speaker 1 (05:00):
So we'll have more on this game coming up in
a bit, obviously, because we're gonna hear from Rick Carlile,
who was already not happy after the game.

Speaker 3 (05:08):
But what is he not happy about?

Speaker 1 (05:10):
However, big story out of the NFL today, because now
we can really with you know, they always say with
time comes clarity, right, and with what's going on now
with Kirk Cousins and Michael Pennick Junior, the biggest story
of the draft. The Falcons go out and sign Kirk
Cousins for four years and one hundred and sixty million dollars,
and then they go draft Michael Pennick Junior in the

(05:32):
top ten. What's gonna happen? Why did they do this?
Is Kirk Cousins mad? How long will Michael Penix really
sit for? Is he gonna sit for four years? Cousins
is still really really good. But with time comes clarity.
And after Kirk Cousins spoke today, I could tell you
not only why Pennix was drafted, but how it's going
to go with Cousins and Pennix. But First, here's cousins

(05:54):
from the Buzzing with the Boys podcast about how he said, listen,
this is These are his first comments, his first public
common and since the draft everything else has been reports
and messages, but his first public comments on the Bustle
with the Boys podcast about how having hard feelings overseeing
your successor get drafted doesn't help things.

Speaker 4 (06:14):
Kirk causes the falcons. There's no there's no beef involved.

Speaker 2 (06:17):
No, and I don't think there can be.

Speaker 4 (06:18):
I don't think it's helpful.

Speaker 3 (06:19):
Like we're trying to win a super Bowl. It's hard enough.

Speaker 2 (06:22):
Let's all be on the same page and let's try
to go in a super Bowl.

Speaker 4 (06:25):
So lessen he can't do it right, What the hell
else is he gonna say? Though, Well, listen, and if that.

Speaker 5 (06:30):
Kid thinks he's taking my job him like you, Arthur Blank,
I'll take your money, but you screwed me over bank you.

Speaker 4 (06:39):
Now look what's he gonna say.

Speaker 3 (06:41):
I'll tell you well, he's always gonna be GOODA goods shocks.

Speaker 4 (06:45):
Button down from TJ Max.

Speaker 1 (06:47):
Come, yeah, we're Patagonia. Wherever you shot, you know, Alec's
a shot. But now that the time has gone on,
you can see exactly not only why Pennis got drafted,
but how this is going to play outs. I'll tell
you exactly how because all the comments of oh, you know,
Pennix will sit for four years and it's a Jordan
Love situation. Okay, stop and just and just follow me. Now,

(07:08):
the Falcons didn't know what they were gonna wind up
doing in the draft, right, nobody knows are we going
to get a quarterback?

Speaker 3 (07:14):
Are we not?

Speaker 1 (07:14):
But as we heard, Arthur Blank was paranoid about not
having a quarterback. Did want to go through another year
like this where Desmond Ridder was playing. And there's Desmond
Ridder any good if he's not, they're stuck. Right, So
this is not about why they got both quarterbacks. This
was we know we have to go get a quarterback. Right,
We're close, we need a quarterback. We don't know how
the draft is gonna go. Let's go get Kirk Cousins. Great,

(07:37):
they get Kirk Cousins, sign him four years, one hundred
and sixty million dollars. Now, how are things gonna go.
We're gonna be able to trade up. We're gonna get
a guy we like. We have no idea. It happens
that Pennix falls to them, right, and a guy who
was a riser we thought maybe he going the top five,
but Pennix falls to them, And for the Falcons, it's
a chance to say, okay, well now we can get

(07:59):
our core back of the future as well. We didn't
know we were gonna get him, but let's take him.
So now you have Cousins in Penix and it's a problem. Okay,
first of all, it's not gonna be a problem for
very long, because I agree it's gonna be weird. But
now you know exactly why they why they did what
they did. They don't know what they're gonna do. Quarterback wise,
we get Kirk Cousins. Now we get Michael Pennick junior.

(08:20):
Michael Penick Junior is not gonna sick sit like Jordan
Love for a couple of years. He was drafted in
the top ten. Top ten quarterbacks don't sit for very long.

Speaker 3 (08:28):
Now. Could he sit all year this year? Yes, And
that's what I.

Speaker 1 (08:32):
Expect because what's gonna happen is this Cousins goes in,
he'll be the quarterback. You know, we talked about Penix
before and how if he sits for a year, It's
not the worst thing because A he gets used to
the NFL and b he gets as healthy as he
possibly can get. Because this is a guy coming off
of injuries all the time. Right, he got his he
got his ass kicked in the National Championship game. Right,

(08:53):
He's a guy that gets injured. You want him to
be able to get on an NFL program and be
able to be as healthy as he can be in
his wrong as he can be when he goes in
there and take shots for real, because we watched him
and we told you, Hey, when things go great for him,
he's a great quarterback. When a play breaks down, oh
boy does he struggle. And when he gets hit, he
is not the same guy. Right, you saw Michigan outlined

(09:14):
everything that gives him trouble over the course of that
National title game. So not the worst thing in the
world from to sid for a year, but more than
that is not gonna happen. So what's gonna So what's
gonna go on is this Cousins is gonna play this
year and unless they go absolutely crazy and Cousins throws
for forty five touchdowns and the Falcons go to the
NFC Championship Game, at the end of the year, the

(09:36):
Falcons are gonna trade Kirk Cousins. They'll trade him to
a team of his his desire, his destination, and Michael
Pennix Junior will take over because in the off season
there's gonna be teams that want quarterbacks. We don't know what,
you know, are they gonna have a quarterback class next
year like this year?

Speaker 3 (09:50):
Probably not.

Speaker 1 (09:51):
I mean, we still have to see how the year goes,
but it's probably not gonna be like it was this year,
where you know, there are five guys that could have
gone in the top ten. So in the offseason, yeah, okay, hey,
we'll trade will trade Kirk Cousins. It's a very palatable contract.
And I know Kirk Cousins will play well because Kirk
Cousins is a thirty touchdown a year guy, thirty touchdown,
seven picks. You know he'll win enough games. He's a

(10:11):
good enough quarterback. But this is how Atlanta's going to
solve it is that unless and if they go crazy
go to the NFC title game, then it's a great
problem to have no one cares. Hey, Michael Penix will
sit again. Kirk Cousins is our guy. Eventually, we have it.
No one's gonna care. But after this year, Cousins will
play well. But they will say in the offseason, we
have to go to Michael Pennock Junior because we took
him too high in the drought. I mean, he's a

(10:32):
top ten pick. He can't keep sitting Jordan Love. They
reached up to get him in the end of the
first round. Those guys can sit a little bit. Pennix
is coming in with a lot more fanfare than Jordan Love,
with a lot more notoriety. He's already wowing people at
camp with his arm strength and decision making. So he's
going to play. But that's how it's gonna play out.
He's gonna play this year. It will be somewhat awkward,

(10:53):
but not really. And in the offseason Kirk Cousins will
get traded and Michael Pennix Junior will take over. With
time comes clarity.

Speaker 5 (11:00):
To be fair, everybody wowed in the rookie mini camps.
It's kind of like it's it's hard to kind of
like Brownie James hitting those twelve three pointers with nobody
guarding him and seemingly with as much time as he
felt like he needed to take each shot.

Speaker 4 (11:12):
Hey as much.

Speaker 1 (11:13):
As Hey, as much as I shoot threes in the
YMCA by myself when I work out, it's sometimes it's
hard to hit more than a couple in a row.

Speaker 3 (11:21):
I just want to let you know, but it.

Speaker 4 (11:23):
Looks working out. What are you talking about?

Speaker 5 (11:26):
It's more than I labricating information on a national radio show.

Speaker 1 (11:30):
What are you talking about? Man, I've said that that's
that's what I do. Work out, I go up and
down the floor and I just shoot threes.

Speaker 3 (11:36):
That's all I do.

Speaker 4 (11:36):
Just said, that's what you do.

Speaker 3 (11:37):
It's all I do. That's all I do.

Speaker 5 (11:39):
We gotta get the subruter film. There's no twos, no
twos at all, man, just not bad. I don't no doubt.

Speaker 3 (11:46):
It's just threes and dunks. That's all I do. It's
a I can't dunk. It's all threes.

Speaker 4 (11:49):
Who's got the court of three?

Speaker 5 (11:50):
It says chucker, But no, I mean, I like the
way you lay this out. And look, you know, for
Kirk Cousins to some degree, and as we talked about
on draft, you go back to his own draft and
when he came in and the same draft that they
drafted RG three who let's uh, raise a glass to him.
He got Jason Kelsey today. But you know, when we

(12:12):
get down to it, you've got to have an insurance
plan for a mid thirties guy you've got.

Speaker 4 (12:18):
I didn't.

Speaker 5 (12:18):
Again, I still disagree with taking a guy in the
first round. But if Arthur Blank loved him, well, then
Arthur Blank loved him and the opportunity came to draft him,
et cetera. Even though the logical thing was, well, we
gave this guy one hundred million dollars guaranteed, let's put
things in the you know, the best possible circumstance for
him to go win a very winnable division. But yeah,

(12:42):
I get trading out. We know the quarterback class, at
least on paper, is not great for next year or
necessarily for the year after. So sure, as long as
Kirk Cousins is healthy and upright, they'll be suitors, always
will be. And you know, if Pennix is there and
they're scufflin. Look, he's one of those guys I'd look

(13:03):
at and towards towards the deadline. If if things really
go sideways, that's some contender that loses someone do an injury,
you might have it even there, you got to rework
the deals and whatever, because ninety of that one hundred
million is the first two years. But point being, you know,
it's it's fuzzy math. We can always work through that
stuff dead cap and all. So certainly for Penix, like

(13:27):
guy watched him, you know, going back to his Indiana
days and Indiana Knights starts singing all those songs from
Tom Petty. But the fact of the matter is that
injury history is there as well, So you better be
sure that he's ready to go as you get your
your squad together. And I don't care if he throws
it a country mile in rookie camps. That tells me nothing,

(13:51):
nothing exit.

Speaker 1 (13:52):
But the thing is he's got the whole year. He's
got the whole year, I mean, and in a perfect
world he doesn't see the field, but he'll see the
field in twenty twenty five. Right, He's not he's not
gonna sit like that, Like he's not Jordan Love. It
sounds like a great comparison to make, but he's just
not Jordan Love. He's got he's gonna play and keeping
him on the bench for a year is gonna be tough.
But that's how it's gonna go exit out about a Fresca.

(14:14):

Speaker 1 (15:14):
Fox Sports Radio The Jason Smith Show with my best
friend Mike Harmon. Right now, middle of second quarter Minnesota
and Denver, a pivotal game five series of which the
home team has yet to win. Minnesota and Denver tied
at thirty one a piece. This has been a nip
tuck game all the way through. We'll have more on

(15:35):
this coming up. However, one of the biggest stories in
the NBA they're in basketball today gets us to our
next guest. You probably heard our colleague gear and friend
at Fox Sports Radio, Doug Gottlieb name the new head
coach at University Wisconsin Green Bay. He's gonna pilot the
Phoenix in the Horizon League.

Speaker 3 (15:52):
He is also going to.

Speaker 1 (15:53):
Keep his radio show here at Fox Sports Radio, which
is gonna be a phenomenal and fascinating social experiment to
see how this thing goes. Really, it is just an
unbelievable story. This makes me realize I may be closer
than ever to managing the New York Mets. Joining us
now on the hotline, let me know exactly how close
I am. MLB Network Insider, extraordinary Fox Sports Radio insider.

(16:17):
He is on Twitter at John Morosi, he is going
to be on the call tomorrow of Phillies Mets sweep
as that series continues, is he bringing a broom? Well, look,
the Philly's already won the first two in New York.
Now they're gonna win the next two in Philadelphia, and
maybe the seat gets hot for Carlos Mendoza and I
become the Mets manager. John Paul, So, I got to ask, now,

(16:38):
Doug gottlieb radio host, TV guy for a long time,
it's coach basketball, head coach Wisconsin, Green Bay, ME radio
host for a long time.

Speaker 3 (16:47):
I've coached softball for a long time. Mets fan.

Speaker 1 (16:50):
I have the inn with you and David Stearns because
you send him text for me when I send you
positive things about the team. How close am I to
being named Mets manager? I think right now, two years away.

Speaker 7 (17:02):
We're going to work on this. I will be in
hopefully having a chance to catch up with David in person,
as you mentioned, when I'll be there for MLB Network
in Philly this week, and I probably won't ask Carlos
if that's if that's potentially on the horizon you having
his job. Maybe I'll mention it to David and just

(17:27):
get his interest on that and see what he thinks.
But to me, the larger question, and this is my
Midwestern perspective on all this. First of all, I love
that we are now moving the center of gravity in
the in the sports media and sports talk radio landscape
away from the coasts and closer to where I live

(17:50):
here in Michigan and in fact where I was born
in northern Michigan. They're all Packer fans there, So basically,
you know, Doug and I are like cousins now going
to be here in the Midwest. I wonder if there's
gonna be a second Fox Sports radio studio actually constructed
in the basketball facility at Green Bay that would allow

(18:11):
Doug to both host the radio program and then run
the practice at the same time. And listen, no, no,
we need more pressure. We got to get a one
three one here. We got to rotate better. I want
to go man, press to zone, half court, all that stuff.
He's going to be saying that on the air, So
I really think that his practices will likely be part

(18:33):
of the show. I'm just it's like an on air
production meeting right now for Doug show. But of course
I'm gonna have to have a conversation with Doug because
he's been very gracious to me over the years. He's
had me on his show many many times. But now
you got two teams in his league are here in Michigan,
including where my father earned his law degree at the

(18:56):
University of Detroit. So, guys, I got to tell you what,
when the Titans are playing at Callahan Hall, that's that's
a big deal in our family. So I don't think
I'm not to really think about this one here. You know,
Doug rolls in there with with the University Wisconsin Green
Bay Varsity to Callahan Hall. You know, Doug, you've been

(19:18):
great to be buddy, But but my dad's a Titan.
So what am I going to do on that one?

Speaker 3 (19:22):
Listen, listen, I'll make it.

Speaker 1 (19:23):
I'll make it even easier on you, Okay, as a
guy who has been to your hometown of Marquette, Michigan
on many occasions, anatomy of a murder, as a guy
who's been there. When I get the gig with the Mets,
John Paul, I'm gonna make you gonna get a huge gig,
like I mean, I mean, oh, you want to be
bench comin whoa WHOA hold on now.

Speaker 3 (19:41):
Well, Harmon's my ben. You guys will both be my
bench coaches. It'll be great. I need both.

Speaker 4 (19:45):
I mean I got to maybe eight minutes more right.

Speaker 7 (19:49):
I might be the quality control coach. I'll be the
basically my job and this this will work. I mean basically,
I love where the conversation is going because we're to
basically be able to recreate our our newsroom ecosystem into
the baseball roles. So I would say the person who

(20:11):
answers the phone or is directing traffic behind the behind
the glass, I would say it's probably Justin Prosberg. He
will I would say, the most analogous decision there will
either be if you're really feeling good, bench coach, or
at the very least, something you know that he can
do is answer the phone. So he becomes the replay coordinator.
He's he's the guy that's that's on the phone with

(20:34):
replay and letting you know do you replay the play
or not. That's it's a very natural transition for Justin.
It is.

Speaker 1 (20:41):
However, I've already promised him, mister met so he Justin's
already taken care of he's mister.

Speaker 7 (20:46):
Met Well, you know that's that is perhaps the highest
profile spot in the whole organization. And by the way,
so what's what's going to happen If the Mets continue
struggling and they've got a t Peede Alonzo with the
trade deadline, then what do you do?

Speaker 3 (21:02):
Here's what happens.

Speaker 1 (21:03):
I get like you say, you know, when you send
advice that I give sometimes to David Sterns, I will
send you what the best trade is. And if that's
the trade the Mets wind up making, that's the message
that Sterns he is sending to me that hey, hey,
this guy is my next manager. He really gets it,
like I know that that's how it's going to work.

Speaker 7 (21:22):
Where he shows the confidence in you. He believes in you.
Now I got it. And and listen when when they
promoted Scott, you were you were all over that. I mean,
I'm beginning to think that maybe you're you're running your
own shadow cabinet there in La running running the Mets
and making your own decisions. As if I was in charge,

(21:44):
this is what I would do. It's the it's the
it's the shadow government that you've got there in the
tirack dot Com Studios.

Speaker 4 (21:50):
It's what he's been doing.

Speaker 5 (21:51):
For a long time and now there finally might be
a little juice to it. And I mean, look for Mendoza,
you could just ask him, you know, the fans and
a lot of media members in New York think they
can do your job, can they?

Speaker 3 (22:03):
And then you see how he respond well.

Speaker 7 (22:07):
Now, listen, he has just been on the job regular
season wise for six weeks. We got to get him
some time. And let's be fair. This is one thing
I will add as well that we knew, we knew
the Braves would be really good this year, and they are.
The Phillies have in my view, exceeded expectations, even with
Trey Turner on the IL. So my apologies to you

(22:31):
that I think it's it's probably going to be a
longer rebuild than we thought, unless, of course, Steve Cohen
gets really excited and Jason Smith gets really excited and
and you decide to sign one. So too, this winner
that maybe it's a little bit of a different conversation.

Speaker 5 (22:44):
All right, Well, let me let me go to actual
baseball now instead of these pipe dreams of one Jason Smith.

Speaker 4 (22:50):
Because he's drawing up Org charts.

Speaker 7 (22:52):
We had to indulgence, Mike. It was either it was
either You're gonna have to indulge them for two straight hours,
or we could We could do it during this segment,
and we've we have, I think graciously opted for the
latter option.

Speaker 1 (23:04):
No, don't be this indulging. I can open up. I'm
opening up the position of bench coaches now for both
of you.

Speaker 3 (23:09):
Forget both. You'll be lucky to get in the organization.

Speaker 4 (23:11):
Now that's okay.

Speaker 1 (23:13):
I am pre.

Speaker 7 (23:14):
Preparing my CV as we speak.

Speaker 5 (23:16):
Yeah, well, just as soon as you start to struggle
and realize that you can't handle that balance, because psychologically,
if you had that Mets uniform on, it would crush
you from anything else in your life. The Mike Harmon
Show becomes reality. So I've already planted bits with Frostburg,
Chris Sale. What the hell happened? Where did this guy
come back from?

Speaker 7 (23:36):
Well, that's a great question. And I think that Alex
Anthopoulos deserves a ton of credit with the Atlanta Braves
that he has always been someone that understands value and
these comfortable. I think part of Alex's philosophy on pitching
is he's willing to go all in for the shorter

(23:58):
term deals of guys that he believes in. He almost
actually signed Justin Verlander when Verlander went to the Mets.
I'm not sure if future Mets manager Jason Smith was
aware of that, but the Braves really made a serious
effort to sign JV. They didn't. They fell short. Of course,
he signed with the Mets. Now he's back with the Astros.

(24:19):
But I think that when you look at Sales pitch making,
he's healthy again, He's been in the zone. The secondary
stuff is sharp, the command is sharp. I think that
he is now in a moment where if you've got
to start game one of a postseason series now, especially
with Strider on the il and again Max Fried certainly

(24:41):
is part of that conversation too, but you're going to
feel really good with Sale going game one or Game
two and the other piece of it. That's interesting, and
we're not going to get out of ourselves here, but
at some point they may well face the Dodgers in
the postseason, and boy, if you're the Braves, wouldn't you
love it to be able to have Freed and Sail

(25:03):
as two key lefties going up against Freeman and Otani
to try to again try to limit the damage for
most two high end MVP players. It's just going to
be so much fun to watch us all play out.
And Chris sale is right back in the middle of
it like he was all those years ago with the
Chicago White Sox back in the day.

Speaker 3 (25:23):
All right, JP, here we are.

Speaker 1 (25:25):
We're sitting in the middle of May, and we've seen
about forty five games or so. And as you talked
about the Phillies surprising everybody at the top in the
National League along with the Dodgers. If I said to you,
the best team in the American League right now is
who who are you going to tell? Regardless of record,
who's the best team right now in the American League?

Speaker 7 (25:45):
The best team in the American League right now, I'm
I'm going to go with the Yankees. And that may
surprise you a little bit, but part of it is
that Garrick Cole has not even thrown a pitch yet,
and look how good they are. I do believe the
Orioles will add a starting pitcher at the deadline, but

(26:07):
provided health, there's no one available that's going to be
able to do what Garrett Cole can do. And so
Clay Holmes has been just absolutely unhittable in the closers role,
and you've got Soto and Stan has been able to
come back and rejoin with Judge. Rizzo is back and

(26:28):
healthy both He's a different guy than he was a
year ago. Verdugo is a valuable player. You go down
the list, guys, I mean, I just think that. Listen.
I love Baltimore's young talent and they could easily win
the day. But with the current potential on this roster,
I like the Yankees roster the best of everybody.

Speaker 5 (26:49):
All Right, we went full positivity. The rarity with Chris
Sale and his redemption tour. How do you fix Corbyn Carroll?

Speaker 7 (26:58):
Well, that's a great question, and I think this is
this has become an issue around baseball. Look at how
many talented hitters who really got off the good stars
last year or had or good full seasons. Rkel Senta
Detroit is a good example of this, and then they
just regress. You know, Carol is someone that I think

(27:20):
he has a swing that I think in some ways
is predisposed to if he's attacked with certain velocity and commanded. Well,
he has not been able to get to that spot
and That is what concerns me right now. He will
figure it out. He will. There's a reason why he's

(27:42):
one of the best. At least last year was one
of the best ten players in the sport. He was
that good. He runs the basis so well, he defends
so well. But it's it's now I think a parent
how much the d Backs relied on him last year
and how much they still need him now. He's just
not there yet. In my opinion, He's he his timing

(28:02):
is a little bit off. I do think he'll figure
it out, but big Contract, World Series, a lot of pressure,
and I just think it's it's been an out of
sync beginning of the year for him. I do believe
that he will, like Julio Rodriguez has done before, he'll
figure it out because he's just that talented.

Speaker 3 (28:22):
He is the pride of Marquette, Michigan. He is the Pope.

Speaker 1 (28:24):
John Paul Morose, the MLB Network insider on the call
of tomorrow's Phillies Mets game, can you get the Mets
to win here? I'm starting to slip away from us
a little bit here, So.

Speaker 7 (28:35):
Slipping away, my friends, my apologies there. I will try
to bring David some luck when I when I speak
to him this week, I tell you what, Mark Canna,
the former Matt, has done very well in Detroit. So
the Tigers thank you for Mark Canna. But you're right,
they got to get more from Alonzo and Lindora and
McNeil to an extent as well. It's a lot of

(28:57):
a lot of those big guys. And I think they
still miss Alvarez, which with them a lot during the
course of the season too. I think they still miss
the young main stay behind the plane.

Speaker 3 (29:05):
Pope. Catch on the game tomorrow, my friend, we'll talk
a little, have fun. All right, There goes John Paul Morosi.

Speaker 1 (29:12):
I'm in a couple of years away a couple of Hey,
there's a sharp guy Mets manager.

Speaker 3 (29:16):
Man, all I get to wear the Mets jersey and stuff.

Speaker 5 (29:18):
Oh well, he just came in and he took the
bench job. He just you know, I mean, I like
that he asserted himself. That's kind of cool. I mean,
I I'd go full Pool Q joker kind of scene
if I needed to say that job.

Speaker 1 (29:33):
I initially had John Paul as as like a PR director, right,
I guess you had like either the PR director. He's great,
you know, the forward face of the organization. But he
wants me the bench coach.

Speaker 4 (29:43):
So I thought you were gonna have him take over for.

Speaker 1 (29:48):
No, no, no, come on, I'm Sternsey's guy, man, I said.
I communicate with him through John paulm ROSSI you get
this is like a spy movie from from World War Two.

Speaker 4 (29:57):
It's either that the guy that you're you're going to
to have your fortune RD. I don't know what it
is anymore.

Speaker 1 (30:03):
Right at a medium, we're communicating in coded messages.

Speaker 3 (30:06):
This is fantastic.

Speaker 4 (30:08):
He watches you blink on a zoom.

Speaker 1 (30:10):
Call The Jason Smith Show with my best friend Mike Carmon.
We have more basketball coming up next. Tonight was the
WNBA debut for Caitlin Clark. While it was rough, it
was all so great.

Speaker 3 (30:25):
How can it be both? We'll tell you that's next.
Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 2 (30:28):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific.

Speaker 3 (30:36):
Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (30:37):
The Jason Smith Show with My best friend Mike Harmon
live from the ti iraq dot Com studios. Right now,
NBA playoffs at halftime, Nuggets with a six point lead
over the Timberwolves fifty to forty four, home team, of course,
yet to win a game in this semifinal round.

Speaker 3 (30:57):
Towns has eleven for the Timberwolves.

Speaker 1 (30:59):
Edwards has five points on what one of eight shooting.

Speaker 4 (31:06):
Not a great Michael Jordan never not a game.

Speaker 1 (31:11):
The last time Michael Jordan was won for eight in
the first half got it back to nineteen eighty nine.
It's so not a great first half. So are you're
looking at this in the game, are okay? Jokic is
dominating and Edwards has been horrible and it's only a
six point game, So so far, I would say advantage Nuggets,
But we still have these second half.

Speaker 5 (31:29):
To go, and you have Cat who's kind of banged
up trying to battle through out there, so we'll keep
an eye on that.

Speaker 1 (31:36):
Meanwhile, though, today was the debut in the WNBA of
Caitlin Clark, sharing the headlines with the Knicks thirty point
win over the Pacers. Caitlyn Clark twenty points in her
WNBA debut.

Speaker 3 (31:48):
Here are the first two points of her career, and
now Clark comes up with a steal.

Speaker 4 (31:54):
Clark thought about pulling up from three will.

Speaker 2 (31:56):
Tip inside the first points in the WUNBA career of
Kitlin Clark.

Speaker 1 (32:06):
WNBA Radio on the call twenty points. But the Fever
get pounded tonight by the Connecticut Sun. Wasn't a close game,
wasn't close at any point.

Speaker 3 (32:17):
It was a.

Speaker 1 (32:17):
Blowout from the beginning, a twenty point win for the Sun.
And when you look at Caitlin Clark's a w you
could say, wow, this was bad. But I got news
for you. This is actually better than you could possibly expect.
All right, First of all, yes, did they lose. Yes,
Remember though, there's a reason why the Fever had the
number one pick in the draft. This is because they

(32:39):
won thirteen games last year, the third worst record in
the league. Connecticut is very good. They had the third
best record in the league last year. So this opening night, okay, yes,
the Fever are starting over. Connecticut is one of the
most physical teams in the league. And you saw tonight,
whether you saw some of the highlights on social media
or you watch the game. And Dejona Carrington was phenomenal

(33:00):
defending Caitlyn Clark forced her into eight turnovers.

Speaker 3 (33:03):
Caitlyn Clark had ten for the game. So not a
great night.

Speaker 1 (33:07):
When you look at her line with twenty points and
and she was four out eleven from three point range.
She turned the ball over ten times in a ninety
two to seventy one loss. You'd say, Okay, yeah, boy,
Caitlyn Clark, welcome to WNBA. Yeah, but when you take
all that into into account that here's her debut, her
team is not very good. They played a very good

(33:28):
team physical and look, Carrington is one of the best
defensive players in the.

Speaker 3 (33:32):
League for a while. It's fourth year guard out of Stanford.

Speaker 1 (33:35):
Yeah, you can see where Caitlin Clark's gonna have a
little bit of difficulty. But welcome to the WNBA. She
didn't go one for sixteen and score three points. She
did have ten turnovers, and that's a thing, but she
scored twenty. She was still able to make her signature shots.
She was able to get free on screens. She hit
long threes. This is about as good as you could

(33:57):
expect for someone who an entire league was gunning for
coming out of college.

Speaker 3 (34:01):
Baths. Okay, let's show her the ropes. Let's see what
it's really like.

Speaker 1 (34:04):
This is Caitlyn Clark on a bad team leading her
team opening night in points in a game they lost. Yes,
she didn't shoot well, Yes she turned the ball over
a lot, but did the game look too big for it?

Speaker 3 (34:15):
Did not? Did it look like she's.

Speaker 5 (34:16):
Not gonna you wanted to tail it two halves first half?
It got away from her a bunch.

Speaker 1 (34:23):
Well, she also remember and she also had to play
the first half with two foulans. That doesn't touch fouls
in the first five minutes?

Speaker 2 (34:32):
Turnover?

Speaker 1 (34:33):
What time out for a second? What the hell are
you doing doing that? By the way, really two touch
fouls for Kaitlyn Clark in.

Speaker 3 (34:38):
The front.

Speaker 4 (34:41):
Management?

Speaker 3 (34:42):
What are you doing with w A B What are
you doing?

Speaker 1 (34:45):
You gotta call out of the official to go, hey,
I'm not saying let her go, but what are you doing?

Speaker 3 (34:49):
Come on? And you can't do that.

Speaker 4 (34:51):
But maybe they didn't like the hype she was coming
in with.

Speaker 3 (34:54):
Either, I'm gonna.

Speaker 1 (34:55):
Give it, she's gonna learn what a fouls like in
the w n B A right away. Listen, she's the
that's lifting your league up. You don't treat her like
she's coming in and everybody's mad at her for some reason.
You gotta let that go. She's lifting up the league.
But yeah, she struggled a little bit. Then she found
a groove, still led the team in scoring, still got
her signature shots. The game is not too big for her.

(35:17):
She is going to be really good very soon. If
it's not already. Maybe her next game they play a
team that's not that great defensively, she scores thirty. She
had seven or seven or eight threes, and suddenly it's
oh boy, Caitlin Clark is here. So tonight, even though
you expected the entire team to be gunning to stop her,
she still was able to produce.

Speaker 3 (35:36):
No, it did didn't end in a win.

Speaker 1 (35:37):
But I didn't say anything night, telling me, yeah, can't
let Clark's gonna struggle in the WNBA.

Speaker 5 (35:41):
Yeah, over time, it'll be fine. You're gonna have nights
like this. And look, I'm not as rosy colored glasses.
I can't eliminate. And you know, just ignore the ten
turnovers because that was just bad. She got bullied on
some of those plays and made some terrible discouples.

Speaker 3 (35:57):
She just dribbled off her foot, right, It's like, what
is happening?

Speaker 4 (36:00):
But that's the stand. Well, but look who knows?

Speaker 5 (36:03):
Man? You know, it's a learning curve like anything else,
and you're gonna get everybody's best shot tonight. You had
a great defender get after it. She she did hit
four three point shots. I was I did. Like the
w NBA, they went like you perry positives, like hey,
she's the only the.

Speaker 4 (36:17):
Third w NBA player to the debut to do this
and that, and the other was.

Speaker 5 (36:21):
Like yeah, probably the first with ten turnovers too, yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
well she did shoot five of fifteen. Yeah, like she
was drading it. But but again you take some positives
from it. And if you bet the over on her points,
you lost by point five, so you're pissed.

Speaker 1 (36:39):
The record for turnovers in a career debut was eight
Sophia Cooper.

Speaker 3 (36:44):
Cynthia Cooper had the record.

Speaker 4 (36:45):
So not a big player, pretty good company right there.

Speaker 1 (36:49):
So again, Caitlin Clark is gonna be just fine carrying
that league on her shoulders.

Speaker 3 (36:53):
It's absolutely fine. Exit out about a Fresca exit swollen dome.

Speaker 1 (36:57):
Coming up next, we'll hear from Rick Carlisle, who's very
upset about the Pacers lost tonight to the Knicks.

Speaker 3 (37:03):
Foll
