Speaker 1 (00:01):
News when you wanted With Bloomberg News Now, I'm Brian Curtis.
In Hong Kong, Apple sales declined less than feared last quarter,
helped buy stronger than expected demand in China. Apple saw
greater China revenue, falling eight percent to sixteen point thirty
seven billion, but again better than expected. Bloomberg's Emily Chang
spoke with Apple CFO Luca Maistrie, who struck an upbeat

(00:23):
tone on China.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
He talked about that disruption, you're seeing some impacts there,
but he said, we're actually happy with our results in China.
Specifically said this is the most competitive smartphone market in
the world, without a doubt, but we feel good about
the results. He talked about Tim cook being in China recently,
the new store they opened in Shanghai, the level enthusiasm
for the brand being very strong, the fact that they
had the top two top selling smartphones in the quarter,

(00:47):
they set a record for upgraders. So he said, the
reality is very different from what you read at times.

Speaker 1 (00:53):
Bloomberg's Emily Chang. Apple also announced plans to boost it's
quarterly dividend and repurchase an additional one hundred and ten
billion dollars in shares that would be the largest buyback
in US history. Police have arrested more than two thousand
people during the protests in college campuses over the past
few weeks. Bloombrigg's Ed Baxter has the story.

Speaker 3 (01:14):
Arrests in every corner of the nation and President Joe
Biden directly addressing it, saying two principles at play. First
is the right to free speech and for people to
peacefully assemble and make their voices heard. The second is
the rule of law.

Speaker 2 (01:31):
Both must be upheld.

Speaker 3 (01:32):
He says the two have to balance, so protest but
not be violent or hateful at Baxter Bloomberg Radio.

Speaker 1 (01:40):
Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs has signed a bill repealing in
eighteen sixty four near total ban on abortion in the state.
This after Arizona's Supreme Court reinstated the Civil War era
law last month. The law banned all abortions except in
cases that threatened the life of the mother. Here Sawbs
speaking at a bill signing ceremony.

Speaker 4 (02:01):
Today we are doing what twenty three governors and fifty
five legislatures refused to do.

Speaker 5 (02:07):
And I am so proud to be the ones that
got this job. Done.

Speaker 1 (02:10):
The repeal reinforces Arizona's twenty twenty two abortion law that
bans the procedure after fifteen weeks of pregnancy. Bloomberg News
has learned that Huawei Technologies has been secretly funding cutting
age research at US universities. Huawei is the sole funder
of an awards program run by the Optica Foundation. Bloomberg

(02:31):
reporter Kato O'Keefe broke the story.

Speaker 6 (02:33):
Quawe is on so many different US government lists. Probably
the most significant are these Commerce Department restrictions that prevent
people and entities from sharing technology with the company. But
in terms of academic research or research that's meant to
be published, those rules don't apply.

Speaker 1 (02:51):
Bloomberg's Kato O'Keefe. Applicants and university officials say they did
not know about Huawei's role in the awards until a
reporter asked them about it. Donald Trump may be spending
most days in a courtroom in Manhattan, but he's still
focusing on winning the White House this fall and this
weekend the next step in his campaign. Bloomberg's Amy Morris

(03:13):
has that story from Washington.

Speaker 4 (03:14):
Trump is sharpening his focus on a possible running mate
by bringing top contenders for the job to an exclusive
donor retreat in Palm Beach this weekend, along with hundreds
of deep pocketed GOP backers. Sources tell Bloomberg the shortlist
includes Ohio Senator jd Vance, North Dakota Governor Doug Burgham,
Florida Senator Marco Rubio, and South Carolina Senator Tim Scott.

(03:35):
Trump's campaign says nobody knows when or who Trump might choose,
and Trump has said he'll make his decision closer to
the Republican National Convention in July in Washington. Amy Morris

Speaker 1 (03:46):
When Berkshire Hathaway devotees gather in Omaha on Saturday for
the company's annual meeting, there will be a noticeable void
on stage. Bloomberg's Karen Moscow has more.

Speaker 5 (03:57):

in November, just month shy of his one hundredth birthday.
Jim Shanahan. Analysted Edward Jones says without Munger, it may
be a somber start this weekend. Buffett will be joined
on stage by his anointed eir apparent, greg Abel, who
runs all non insurance operations, and Age Jane, who oversees

(04:19):
Berkshire's insurance businesses. Those businesses may post a forty percent
jump in earnings on better underwriting results and higher yields,
according to Bloomberg Intelligence. Karen Moscow Bloomberg Radio.
