Speaker 1 (00:55):
From the Michigan man himself, Raylan Edwards, Malachi Corley, the
newest New New York Jets selected sixty fifth overall. Joe
Douglas executes his second trade in as many days, moves
up from seventy two to sixty five, and the Jets
add another wide receiver to the group. That actually, EA
feels like it's a great compliment to both Garrett Wilson
and Mike Williams and the rest of the receiver number.

Speaker 2 (01:16):
One how about poetic justice Braylan Edwards, a Michigan man,
delivering the news of another receiver coming to New York,
Melchi Coraley, who, frankly, I was quite surprised he was
on the board at the beginning.

Speaker 3 (01:31):
Of round three.

Speaker 2 (01:33):
Credit Joe Douglas for what he's done here early in
the draft, the way he maneuvered in round one picking
up Olu Fashionu, and then coming back here in round
three and moving up to get Melchi Corley, a guy
who's dynamite with the ball in his hands, just very explosive.

(01:55):
The Jets needed another piece in that wide receiver room
entering the draft, and they needed tackle help. Now, what
is Joe Douglas's done with his first two selections, he
gets a big left tackle and then comes back with
a guy who was just a terrorizing player against defenders
throughout his career at Western Kentucky.

Speaker 1 (02:16):
Five two oh seven, and when you're taking a look
at the highlights, what you.

Speaker 4 (02:20):
Might notice is that he breaks tackles.

Speaker 1 (02:21):
That's the book on Malachi Corley fifty five broken tackles.
And also he led the FBS in yak and forced
miss tackles by a wide receiver. In twenty twenty two,
He's first team All Conference CUSA. He's led the conference
in receiving yards. Each of the last two seasons he
led the team in receiving yards. He really is like

(02:42):
a stick of dynamite and he's powerful with the ball
in his hands. He wants to run you over, which
is something that I don't not saying that Garrett Wilson
doesn't want to do that. This is something that the
Jets did not necessarily have last year.

Speaker 3 (02:55):
Well.

Speaker 2 (02:55):
Robert Salas said it during his news conference following the
selection that hey, if he lines up and sees a
family member by the goal line, he's going through him.
The bottom line is, this guy runs angry, he plays angry.

Speaker 3 (03:11):
Jets fans are going to love him.

Speaker 2 (03:13):
And think about the way this wide receiver room has
been reshaped throughout the offseason. Yes, Garrett Wilson is the
star piece, but the Jets go out in free agency and.

Speaker 3 (03:25):
Sign Mike Williams, big weapon on.

Speaker 2 (03:28):
The outside, one of the best contested ball catchers in
the National Football League. And then going into the draft,
you're thinking, Okay, when is it going to happen.

Speaker 3 (03:38):
One of the Jets gonna get one of those receivers.

Speaker 2 (03:41):
And oh, by the way, at the start of this draft,
ten of the first thirty seven selections were wide receivers.
But Joe Douglas again probably getting nervous there in the
draft room because this is the guy the Jets wanted
as far as a receiver is concerned. And he moves
up in the third round, very aggressive.

Speaker 1 (04:00):
Love the move, and there was a couple there was
a run of wide receivers and started the second round
Keon Coleman, the first pick of the second round goes
to Buffalo. Then later on in the second round, Ady
Mitchell goes to Indianapolis. You're sitting there as a Jets fan, like,
is Joe Douglas gonna take some of this draft capital
that he acquired yesterday, moving from ten to eleven with
the Vikings and move back up to secure his guy,

(04:22):
Roman Wilson out of Michigan was available Malachi Corley out
of Western Kentucky. The Jets go with Corley, And how
about this from Peter Schrager, He said, Jets fans and
Kyle Brandt text from a rival GM on Jets second
round pick Malachai Corley. He will win multiple Good Morning
Football angry runs this year. Just watch the yak king
fun player to talk about in the pre draft process

(04:44):
ends up with Garrett Wilson and Mike Williams with the
New York Jets. The angry runs thing is real. Like
if you're setting the over under of appearances for Malachi
Corley as a rookie on angry runs, I think you
gotta go two and a half.

Speaker 2 (04:58):
He's such a threat because anytime you get the ball
in his hands, he can do something with it. And
then you're pairing them up with a guy like Garrett
Wilson and start to think about the weapons the Jets
have offensively in terms of big play potential. You add
him to an offense that already had Garrett Wilson and

(05:20):
Brice Hall. And Brice Hall, coming off his injury last year,
what he was able to do with fourteen hundred yards
out of the backfield, both passing and receiving. The Jets
are just becoming a more well balanced attack and Aaron Rodgers.

Speaker 3 (05:35):
Quite happy about the selection.

Speaker 2 (05:37):
Robert Salad and Joe Douglas said shortly after this selection
they got a text from Aaron Rodgers saying I'm excited.

Speaker 1 (05:44):
And Aaron Rodgers twitter with the eyes of moje. I mean, look,
if you're a Jets fan, you're excited. If you're Aaron Rodgers,
you're excited because this is a guy that you can
just get the ball in his hands and let him
go to work in Greans.

Speaker 3 (05:57):
What do you think about Deebo Samuel light?

Speaker 5 (06:00):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (06:00):
I think someone on the broadcast said, like a sawd
off Deebo Samuel, like he's a shorter version of him, which, okay,
first of all, a little you know, you could have
worded that a little better. But I do think that
the play style is very similar. I think Deebo Samuel's
obviously like what every hard nosed, tackle breaking wide receiver
wants to aspire to be Deebo's a great player, he's

(06:22):
an All Pro, but I think the play style is
very similar. Actually, Dane Brugler in his The Beast, which
obviously he does a great job every year, says his
NFL comparison is somewhere between Deebo Samuel and Amari Rodgers,
who was also a shorter, more compact receiver drafted by
the Packers out of Clemson a couple of seasons ago.
But I think what stands out to me about Corley

(06:43):
is when you look at where he lined up in college,
ninety one point six percent of his snaps came in
the slot. Now that's not something to say that he's
only a slot receiver. That's what he was asked to
do at Western Kentucky. I'm sure when he gets here
to Flora Park under Shawn Jefferson's two the Jets might
elaborate or might broaden his horizon in terms of a receiver.

Speaker 2 (07:05):
Well, you have options on the inside. Now, more options,
I should say, because Garrett Wilson can play anywhere in
any offensive formation. He can excel in the slot, but
he also can excel outside the numbers. And then you're
just giving yourself an other weapons in Quarterley, and think about.

Speaker 3 (07:23):
This receiver group as a whole.

Speaker 2 (07:26):
We know Mike Williams coming off the ACL and the
Jets are very hopeful that he's going to be one
hundred percent week one.

Speaker 3 (07:33):
That's the expectation. So you got him that big.

Speaker 2 (07:37):
Body out there, and Garrett Wilson is a guy who's
dynamic after the catch. And then you add a guy
who's also dynamic after the catch in the yak king
Malachai Corley. And oh, by the way, this tight end
group who we were talking about before the draft commenced.
Of course, you got Tyler Conklin, who had sixty plus

(07:59):
catches left last year.

Speaker 3 (08:00):
You got Jeremy Ruckert.

Speaker 2 (08:02):
So again, a more well balanced attack in terms of
your options here. Melkai Corley doesn't have to come in
here and be the number one guy right away. With
that being said, Aaron Rodgers is gonna have a ton
of people he can get the football too. And the
thing about Corley is you don't have to pass them

(08:23):
the ball thirty yards down the field for him to
make big things that happen.

Speaker 1 (08:27):
It's crazy you said that because seventy five point seven
percent of his catches in twenty twenty three, came within
ten yards of the line of scrimmage, and he's a
piece to this overall puzzle. But he's someone that can
contribute immediately you take a look at what he did
at Western Kentucky. Started twelve games this past season, set
a school record with two hundred and fifty nine career receptions.
In twenty twenty three, he had seventy nine catches, nine

(08:50):
hundred and eighty four yards, which is a twelve.

Speaker 4 (08:52):
And a half average, and eleven touchdowns.

Speaker 1 (08:54):
And his career stats over three thousand yards, eleven and
a half per average and nine touchdowns.

Speaker 4 (09:00):
It's very impressive.

Speaker 5 (10:05):
Ust I what if.

Speaker 6 (10:45):
Business miss fust Yes, this is bist.

Speaker 7 (11:32):
It is foss fist, seafood broil, Malachi Corley.

Speaker 4 (12:54):
I don't know about that. I mean, it's what do
you mean? It would not be my move if I
were drafted. It's a good move. It's not my movie.

Speaker 3 (13:00):
This about you?

Speaker 4 (13:00):
Yeah, I think. Look, it's cool. I also thought it
was really cool.

Speaker 1 (13:05):
He said he's the first player town to sign a
letter of intent from Campbellsville, Texas.

Speaker 3 (13:10):
What a story you were quoting Dame Bugler before.

Speaker 2 (13:14):
As far as the Beasts Corley was the number two
hundred and sixty eight cornerback in the twenty twenty recruiting class,
in the number twenty seven recruit in Kentucky. He played
at a high school that had a graduating class of
two hundred and fifty students.

Speaker 1 (13:32):
Yeah, I think the story, like one of my favorite
parts of the drafts is the stories of all the prospects.
Malachi Corley definitely has a very cool story ol of fashion.
Hu has a good story too when you talk about
like his parents immigrating from Nigeria, going to Penn State,
committing to his education. Now he's the eleventh overall pick
the Jets draft. I think overall, though, EA is shaping

(13:55):
up the way that you would expect it when you
take a look at the mock drafts, like two days ago,
tackle receiver were options at number ten overall, which is
what the Jets held before trading back one spot with
their first two picks, none of which they had originally
coming into the draft.

Speaker 4 (14:10):
By the way they go tackle and then wide receiver,
these dudes.

Speaker 2 (14:14):
Are competitive ballplayers and they're going to add to the
culture here what the Jets are creating, and I think
they're going to be perfect fits inside the locker room.
You're talking about Fashionu, a kid who went back to
Penn State worked on not only improving as a football player,
but completing his degree. And Corley is a guy who

(14:38):
he basically had a market himself out of high school
just to get an opportunity to play college football. And
the bottom line is both of these guys they play
with their hair on fire.

Speaker 3 (14:51):
They want to get better.

Speaker 2 (14:53):
They're coming into a program that the Jets want to
return to contender status on paper. The Jets have vastly
improved here over the first two days of the draft.

Speaker 3 (15:05):
Getting these guys.

Speaker 2 (15:07):
And that comes after Joe Douglas really I thought knock
getting out of the park in free agency, where he
came into the draft with not a glaring need. We
knew the Jets could add to a tackle, could add
I mean could add a tackle, could add a receiver,
Mike Williams one year deal. You're talking about Tyron Smith

(15:27):
one year deal, also Morgan Moses of course up at
the end of the season.

Speaker 3 (15:32):
So you get a new receiver, you get a new
tackle who not only hey down the line.

Speaker 2 (15:39):
These guys can be foundational pieces for you, but you
can learn from very accomplished players in the National Football League.

Speaker 1 (15:45):
And not for nothing, like I do feel like history
of the NFL draft tells you that a third round
wide receiver has a higher likelihood in history to produce
early than a third round tackle.

Speaker 3 (15:57):
Well, halw me out here. Let's go through the names.
We can bound some off each other.

Speaker 1 (16:00):
Well, well, exactly like Nico Collins again from the Texans,
was a fourth round pick. Or you think about second
round picks that were drafted later. DK Metcalf was one
of those, a J Brown second round.

Speaker 3 (16:10):
Pop out Saint Brown.

Speaker 4 (16:12):
Tors and he just got paid in.

Speaker 3 (16:16):
Von Diggs just got traded from Buffalo to Houston. I
believe he was a fifth round pick.

Speaker 4 (16:22):
Yeah, out of Maryland.

Speaker 3 (16:23):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (16:24):
So like the history of Day two and Day three
receivers is more successful than a Day two, Day three ten.

Speaker 2 (16:31):
So this is a huge point because we entered the
draft and we knew that, hey, this is a really
good tackle class, this is a really good wide receiver class.

Speaker 3 (16:39):
But where was the greater depth. The greater depth was
at receiver.

Speaker 2 (16:44):
So Joe Douglas attacks tackle early and then goes that
depth route at the wide receiver spot.

Speaker 3 (16:51):
I got to feel that he is going to rest
quite comfortably tonight.

Speaker 1 (16:56):
Yeah, and the Jets have a bevy of picks on
Day three, which is tomorrow. That's rounds four through seven,
and you can watch all seven rounds across three days.

Speaker 7 (17:04):
Of course.

Speaker 1 (17:04):
That started April twenty fifth, ends tomorrow the twenty seventh,
with NFL Network Draft coverage presented by veriz An additional
coverage on ABC, ESPN and ESPN Deportes.

Speaker 4 (17:15):
It's also streaming on NFL Plus.

Speaker 1 (17:17):
For more on this pick Malachi correlated to the Jets,
heres Caroline Hendershot with Joe Douglas.

Speaker 4 (18:12):
I great to hear from Joe Douglas as always.

Speaker 1 (19:40):
Ea.

Speaker 4 (19:40):
You know you said earlier that, oh, you have to
make it about you.

Speaker 1 (19:43):
Huh, Well I got something to make it about you
and the Florida Gators. Malachi Corley's cousin Jeff Demps.

Speaker 3 (19:49):
Okay, yeah, hey, listen he goes back to the Gators.
Are you off connection?

Speaker 1 (19:54):
I was a track star Jeff Demps as well at Florida.
Corley ran track in high school. He also played basketball,
average seventeen point five points per game, eight and a
half rebounds, four and a half assists per game as
a senior.

Speaker 2 (20:06):
All right, So Corley last year, multi sport star star
in high school, did a lot of things accomplished. Like
you said, people talk about, Okay, what was the caliber
play you were playing coming from Western Kentucky.

Speaker 3 (20:22):
Well goin to Ohio State last year he.

Speaker 2 (20:24):
Showed up eight catches, eighty eight yards and a touchdown.
The thing that I really want to emphasize here is defensively,
for years, the Jets have been getting after people with
the physical mindset.

Speaker 3 (20:38):
And they just coming at you in waves.

Speaker 2 (20:40):
And this is a very good defense that I think
is going to be better in twenty twenty four when
you add a guy like Hassan Redding to the equation. Offensively, yes,
you're going to get the quarterback back in nazy, huge piece,
the most important position of all sports. But what the
Jets have done this year is they've emphasized in the

(21:02):
offseason a physical mindset.

Speaker 3 (21:04):
It starts at the offensive line.

Speaker 2 (21:06):
Joe Douglas goes out and gets John Simpson, and then
he trains, he reacquires Morgan Moses, and then he gets
Tyron Smith, and then he comes back in the draft
and gets Olu Fusano and Melchai Corley. What the Jets
have right now is in offense that's gonna be able
to get after you in the trenches and then also

(21:29):
with the guys with the ball in their hands, and
Corley is another piece to that.

Speaker 4 (21:34):
And just to be clear, the Jets have only had
two picks. They didn't have a second round pick.

Speaker 1 (21:38):
They use some of their capital to move up secure
their player that they wanted to draft, that was Malachai Corley. Now,
looking ahead for the New York Jets that have a
number of Day three selections, and if we were to
look at the landscape of positions that the.

Speaker 4 (21:52):
Jets could address.

Speaker 1 (21:53):
Last week, Joe Douglas said he wants this team to
become like the quarterback factory that the Green Bay Packers
had talk about. Mark Brunell a Day three pick, Matt Hasselbeck,
Aaron Brooks. And so when you take a look at
the top remaining quarterback still available, Spencer Rattler out of
South Carolina has not been taken. Now, the Jets aren't
on the clock for a long time. Right right now

(22:15):
it is still the third round, the number eighty two
overall pick.

Speaker 4 (22:19):
The Cardinals are on the clock. The Jets don't pick
until the mid one hundreds.

Speaker 1 (22:22):
So when you take a look at who's available, Michael
Pratt's a very interesting story. And then Jordan Travis, someone
out of Florida State who maybe there's a discount sticker
on him because he's rehabbing from a gruesome injury at
Florida State. So when you take a look at these quarterbacks, ea,
do you think that one a day three quarterback is
in the mix for the Jets? And two, if you

(22:44):
have to choose anyone from this list, is there someone
that you think fits what the Jets do more than
the other?

Speaker 2 (22:49):
Okay, I'm gonna borrow a line that you always use
if I'm a Betty Man. Yes, the Jets are gonna
take a quarterback on Day three. They only have two
quarterbacks on the roster right now with Aaron Rodgers.

Speaker 3 (22:58):
And Tyrod Tayler.

Speaker 2 (22:59):
I don't think Spencer Rattler will be there if they
stay where they're at in round four. Pratt's a really
interesting guy as far as in tangibles he brings to
the table and what he did at Tulane. And then
you go down that list you talked about Jordan Travis, Yes,
coming off big time, injury. But for anybody who steps

(23:23):
into this situation for the Jets, you're a developmental player.
So the bottom line is you bring in a young
guy and they're gonna be able to soak in a
lot of knowledge from Aaron Rodgers and Tyrod Teller. So
right now, the way the board is, the players are
coming off the board right now. Yeah, one of those

(23:44):
guys certainly could be in play early in the fourth
round for the Jets.

Speaker 1 (23:48):
And the Jets have four or three fourth round picks
as you see right here. Maybe the Jets if they
want to get a guy like you said, if they
want let's say Michael Pratt or one of these other
quarterbacks or another position, they could package some of these
and make sure to.

Speaker 4 (24:01):
Move up in the fourth round.

Speaker 2 (24:02):
Yeah, and you mentioned Travis Daniel. Jeremiah talked to him
prior to the draft. He actually said, Devin Leary maybe
after Spencer Rattler.

Speaker 3 (24:12):
That's the way he rates those guys.

Speaker 1 (24:13):
So I also think, you know, it'll be interesting to
see what type of positions the Jets want to add
on Day three. Joe Douglas has done a great job
of finding pieces on Day three who either become spot starters,
guys I think of like Brandon Eckles, Jamien Sherwood, two
prime examples. Of course, special teamers who if you're in
a pinch, do a good job starting.

Speaker 2 (24:35):
Yeah, you know, so we look at the safety position.
The Jets make the resignings of both Chuck Clark and
Eshton Davis. Tony Adams played very well and you know
he's going to continue to get better. JBC on this
roster as well. Maybe that's the position where you add
on Day three the draft. How about defensive tackle? A
lot of guys on one year deals next to Quinn

(24:58):
Williams as well. In the defense the side of the
ball linebacker, you always could be looking to add some
depth there as well.

Speaker 3 (25:05):
And then finally, how about the running back Peace Greens.

Speaker 1 (25:08):
Yeah, I think running back's interesting because Joe Douglas has
selected a running back. I'm doing the math in my head.
I'm pretty sure every single draft that he's been general
manager since he in twenty twenty. Think aboutle Michael p Ryan,
Michael Carter, Breece Hall is Eabana Konda. So almost all
of those players except for Priese have been Day three selections. Now,

(25:30):
the way that the Jets running back room is right.
Now you have your horse in Breese Hall. You have
i Isiabana Konda, who I think had like a I
wouldn't say like a Retscher ear, but he had some
games down the stretch, some significant run. Maybe he comes
back bigger, stronger, more reliable in year two and so
I think that would it surprise me if Joe Douglas

(25:53):
as a player, not at all in terms of the backfield,
But would it surprise me if he elects to go
a different route or maybe the Jets want to more
of a proven veteran behind those two guys.

Speaker 4 (26:02):
That would not surprise me either.

Speaker 2 (26:03):
He's got it to the point where it's going to
be a hard time for a few of these guys
on day three if he ends up keeping all these
picks making the roster. Because the Jets have greatly increased
their depth here throughout the offseason, but the running back
position could be a spot.

Speaker 3 (26:24):
Where you add another young guide to the equation.

Speaker 2 (26:27):
You got the star in Breist Hall who's got to
be licking his chops as far as what the Jets
have added up front and around him. Here is Yabana Kanda.
I think he's a perfect fit for the system. He's
only gonna get better. But maybe you take a flyer
late and again, the Jets are gonna end this draft
with mister irrelevant. But the bottom line is right now

(26:49):
this offseason, the Jets are going to be very.

Speaker 3 (26:52):
Relevant in twenty twenty four.

Speaker 1 (26:54):
I like what you did there, Oh, Kaylon Bullock, who
was on that top safeties list, He just went a
couple of picks ago seventy eight. Overall, another position the
Jets could add defensive tackle.

Speaker 4 (27:03):
They have a lot of one year deals up front.

Speaker 1 (27:04):
Javon Kinlaw, Lucky Foetu, Solomon Thomas someone that I think
could be interesting. He was in mobile as Dwayne Carter
out of Duke. He seemed like a rotational piece. Also,
his father played with the Jets for a couple of
seasons in a seasons in the eighties. Just food for thought,
not that that means anything. I just think that'd be
a fun storyline, especially when it comes to content, which
is what we're making here.

Speaker 2 (27:25):
Yeah, we are making content. And speaking of content, Lejay
Dousable was part of our pre draft coverage. He actually
pegged McKay Wingle out of LSU to focus tackle to
the Jets. So we'll have to see how it all
plays out on Day three, but you have a lot
of options. You have to be feeling quite good because

(27:46):
as those receivers came off the board there early in
round two, I was worried about what was gonna be
left there. And Joe Douglas, he I'm sure he's making
calls throughout round two, but finally in round three he
gets up right at the top.

Speaker 3 (28:04):
Malchai Corley here is the Jet. You have to appreciate
the way.

Speaker 2 (28:09):
Douglas not only attack free agency, but what he's done
here so far through two days of the draft.

Speaker 1 (28:15):
Did you see Robert Sala and Joe Douglas's text to
each other? No, Well, the New York Jets social team
had it. This is an ode to Sonny Weaver also
known as Kevin Costner from draft day. Malachi Corley, no
matter what the Jets move up from seventy two to
sixty five, they secure that player right there, the Yak

(28:35):
King joins the Green and White. The Jets have had
two picks in as many days. Olu fashion who the
number eleven overall pick. Malachi Corley joins the receiver room.
Coach Sala Joe Douglas, Aaron Rodgers all very excited about.

Speaker 4 (28:47):
The Yak King joining the Green and White. The Jets
have a.

Speaker 1 (28:50):
Bevy of picks tomorrow on Day three of the NFL
Draft as that wraps up, and we'll see you after
the draft, after Joe Douglas and Robert Salam make all
the selections for the twenty twenty for Jets draft class
in ending tomorrow, which is crazy, but that's that's.

Speaker 2 (29:05):
Not really It's never an end to roster construction because
then you have undrafted free agents. But speaking of ending,
our technical director matt' Sikoff's saying that we gotta go.

Speaker 3 (29:16):
We got five seconds.

Speaker 1 (29:17):
I just want to say, check out the draft review
in a couple of weeks on CBS.

Speaker 3 (29:21):
Yeah, the Yack King is in New York.
