(00:00):
We are very fortunate we have misterAdam Peters, general manager of your Washington
Commanders, on the line with this. I think we do. Adam,
you're with us this morning. Iam great morning, fantastic, love it,
love it, hey man. Firstthings, first, congratulations on a
stellar, stellar draft. I mean, even across the world of sports broadcasting,

(00:23):
it's eight plus eight plus eight pluseight plus. So you guys,
you guys went in there and killedit. So nice job. We appreciate
that. It was awesome. Itwas a team effort and it was really
really fun. On a personal note, but I think everybody jumped in and
really head first and did a greatjob in the whole organization. So we're

(00:45):
pumped. Yeah, and you gotyour number two with Jayden Daniels. Right,
So let me ask you. Imean, obviously, you know production
is huge when you're looking at guyslike this in the vetting process, and
I'm sure you guys were looking athim for quite some time. Read somewhere
I think on commander dot com whereyou guys even went back to like some
of his high school tape. Whatelse did you see in this kid outside
of his outstanding play that made youfeel like he would fit with the team,

(01:08):
fit with the scheme. Yeah,I think. Uh, first he
said he was our number two,he's our number one. Well that he
was. He was the best playeron our board. Uh you know bar
Nunn across all positions. But asyou're asking, I mean, he's special
in every way on and off thefield. Uh. Just his his work

(01:30):
ethic, his his commitment to beinga great teammate, just to being the
best player he can be, gettingup early, staying late. They had
to change the codes in the buildingin LSU so they could keep he can
come in the building even later. He called five o'clock meetings in the morning.
He's a he's a true team captain. There just everything you want off

(01:51):
the field as a commander and thencertainly on the field. Anybody can see
that on the field. Off thefield, the work he put in when
no one was looking was was whatreally really pumped us up. Yeah.
Yeah, So when you're leading upand I think I saw it might have
been a week and a half, two weeks out, and you guys said,
look, we're very comfortable with wherewe're at and where we're picking.

(02:13):
But I know it's the NFL,and I'm sure offers came along, you
know, uh in the in thoselast couple of weeks, were any of
them tempting or were you guys like, nope, this is it, this
is what we're doing now. Ithink you'd be surprised really in terms of
the offers. Uh, we got, you know, really one solid offer
and it, you know what, didn't even move the needle. I mean

(02:35):
it would have taken it had tomove mountains to get us off of Jaden
and didn't really move the needle. And we were, like you said,
we were really comfortable with where we'reat, and yeah, it would have
taken a lot. I don't thinkanybody would have given up what we would
have taken to uh to get usoff of Jaden, right right, So
with it's like what ten ten minutes, five minutes. You know that you

(02:58):
guys have to make your draft picture, all the homework that goes into it,
all the work discouts have done, all the work that you've done,
and you and you get in thereand you got to you know, get
your pick, and then something comesin and kind of throws that for a
loop. Maybe the guys off theboard, Maybe something unexpected happened. Do
you find that process like exciting orfrustrating. Well, in terms of in

(03:23):
terms of Jade's picked, that wasthat was super exciting. We knew it
was gonna happen, right, Sothat was that was just a matter of
just don't screw up dialing the numberfor me. But after that it is
as exciting, but it's it's thework we all put in leading up to
that. So when you're coming upto your pick, whether you're sitting and

(03:44):
taking, whether you're trying to tradeup, whether you're trying to trade down,
you're really gone, you know,as a staff, all through all
the different possibilities and you're prepared forjust about anything. So it's really exciting
and it's cool team effort. Youknow, you got guys on the phone
taking phone calls for trades. You'relooking at your board, Okay, if
this guy's gone, and do wego to this guy or do we take

(04:04):
we take a trade, we tradeup to try to get our guys.
So all that's a lot of strategy, but it's a lot of fun and
it's a lot of people really workinghard to get it done. Yeah,
I tell you one of my youknow, the favorite, my favorite things
to watch is the phone calls tothe players. Watching those calls to draft
picks, it's just incredible watching thelook on their face and knowing that their

(04:27):
lives have just completely changed. What'sit like making those calls? Yeah,
that those are cool. It's actuallyI love watching them after I make the
call because I don't really see thelooks on their face until they show the
video. And that's that is socool, just seeing a young man who's
worked his whole life to achieve adream and to see it come to life,

(04:50):
you know when they have the cameraon them, and then it's it's
for us. It's really neat. We're so proud to have all these guys
as commanders and each and everyone oneof them are special, not only on
the field but off the field, and that's what we really set out to
do, and so you know,we're we're so excited to get those types
of people in the building and thento sit and watch and to see their

(05:12):
reactions after the fact. And thenreally the coolest one I think for us,
and they were all incredible, butthe one we did on speakerphone was
with Levante in the seventh round. That was that was awesome because the whole
Uh. Really, we could hearhis whole crew in the background. He
could hear all our whole crew inthe background because it was on speaker,
and it was it was emotional,it was fun, and it was a

(05:32):
It was a great way to capthe draft in a big way. Yeah,
and you guys drafted. Uh,she just feels like almost every position,
did you did you draft? Notthat you're going to give me your
strategy, but did you draft basedon need? Or do you do you
look for like best player available?Yeah? I think you know, with
us, it's always a blend tothat. You know, you're you're looking

(05:54):
to get the best players available, but you also want to feel some need.
So it's case by case. Andhe can go down the line and
look at different draft picks and youcan see that. But you know,
one of the best example, Iwould say is Johnny Newton in the second
round. We got him where wegot him. Uh, we were we
were static, ecstatic to get himwhere we got him. We didn't think

(06:15):
there was a chance that he'd bethere. And so uh we you know,
when when the first day of thedraft ended and we got to get
it that night and the next morningand sat and sat around and just said,
hey, if Johnny's here, whatdo we do, Because you know,
we don't have a huge needs fordefensive tackle. He had a pretty
deep group there, but you know, we looked at our board. He
was clearly the best player on ourboard by you know, by some margin.

(06:39):
So we challenged ourselves and said, all right, if Johnny's there,
we're running up the card. Andwe were thrilled that he was there.
And you know, I've said thisbefore, you can never have too many
good D linemen. And DQ's themaster. He DQ's got a background of
being a D line coach. He'sa master of getting those guys on the
field and getting the best out ofthem. We got a great D line
coach and Darryl Apps, so we'llfind a way to get them on the

(07:01):
field and we'll rotate those guys outand keep them fresh. And so that's
just one example of you just gotto be ready for anything. And with
Johnny Newton on the board, wewere happy to pull the trigger. Well,
I tell you, you're getting meexcited here, but ready to run
through a wall, thank you.You know, the more we talk about
it and the build up to theseason, waiting on the draft. Now

(07:21):
the draft is complete and just youknow, mini camps and it's just a
super exciting time of year. Sothere are several free agents out there.
Are you and the staff exploring, like continuing to add pieces to the to
the team. Yeah, we're alwayslooking to get better. That's that's our
that's our mindset, that's our attitude. And there's somebody who can make our

(07:43):
team better that we're going to goexplore it and we're gonna we're going to
see it through, whether it's youknow, a free agency via trade,
We're going to be in on everything. Uh. We're extremely happy with with
the guys we have in the building. But the dq' is all about competition
and that's what we're about. Andwe're gonna we're gonna have the most competitive
team and the most competitive rooms, whether it's the line room, d lion

(08:05):
room, quarterbacks, whatever. Wewant to make all those rooms competitive in
a positive way and that brings outthe best in our guys. Yeah.
Well, man, look again,I'm very excited for the season. You
know, it's uh, it's beena long time this this team needed,
we needed a little rebuilding of thefranchise and you guys are doing exactly that
and doing a fantastic job at it, and we can't thank you enough as

(08:28):
fans. And good luck on theseason. Man, I appreciate you taking
the time to chat with us.Yeah, thanks for having me. We're
recalibrating, by the way, recalibrating, not rebuilding. There you go,
you coming after it, man, over start that. I love it.
I love it, Adam Peters, thanks and have a great day. All
right, all right, thanks alot. Take care of you, bet,
