We break out our pre Minnesota episode with some fun talk of Kevin's training, memories from the Minnesota matchup specifically 2015 and the loudest I-O-W-A chant there's ever been, where Minnesota has stacked up nationally through 3 weeks and why Iowa could be a much different test. We talk GBone's top 25, if certain coverages would better suit Iowa's secondary to protect against some of the big plays that they have allowed, and some beefy five layer action. We brush over how big of a game this could be for the emotional swing of the fanbase for this season, and dive into Ward's Winners as well.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
The boys are back in action, and this is the
fight for Floyd the Pig has been in Minneapolis for
way too long. Just a year, but way too long,
and this could be the most important Minnesota Iowa.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
Game in the KF tenure.

Speaker 1 (00:14):
A lot rides on this game, especially from the outside
fan perspective of Hawkeye Nation.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
We're going to talk about it and a bunch of
other stuff as well.

Speaker 1 (00:22):
Let's have a day. Let's go.

Speaker 3 (00:51):
Kevin Ward.

Speaker 1 (00:51):
Good to see him back out there.

Speaker 4 (00:52):
Huh, good to be bad.

Speaker 1 (00:54):
Boys back on the field. You look tired.

Speaker 4 (00:57):
I am very tired today.

Speaker 1 (01:00):
You already did your triathlon. I mean, what could you
probably don't even work out anymore. We how how could
you be tired? Training for next year already started? Huh?

Speaker 4 (01:10):
Yeah, you know the scene from Happy Gilmore, Who's like
three hundred sixty four more year days to the next
year's hockey tryouts? Yeah, yeah, yeah, two weeks. But yeah,
we're back in the We're back in training mode.

Speaker 2 (01:22):
Two weeks, no training at all.

Speaker 1 (01:23):
Nothing, It's like.

Speaker 4 (01:26):
Half a week of no training, but you know, a
week and a half of light stuff and then yeah,
we're back in full till.

Speaker 1 (01:34):
I saw in your when you posted the sort of
little recap picture of the finish line, and you and
Alyssa on on Instagram that you said that you would
definitely be back next year, And my first thought was, oh, no,
Kevin's Kevin's officially hooked. He's a triathlete, and this begins
his career for the next twenty years of him being
you know, just like doing an iron Man in every

(01:54):
state and every country. This is this is what, this
is where it goes.

Speaker 4 (01:58):
We're gonna start off with with trying to be really
good at the Olympic triathl and I don't know, I
don't know if I ever get to even want to
do they half or full iron.

Speaker 1 (02:07):
Really, you're not interested in the distance, You're more interested
in the speed at the shorter distance.

Speaker 4 (02:12):
I think, so, I mean two hours still grind man.

Speaker 1 (02:15):
Yeah, yeah, it sure is. I would rather grind in
the in the in those three than just doing the
running the half half marathon which I ran in like
one eight. Nope, don't like that.

Speaker 4 (02:30):
So you'd rather do half iron Man where you have
to finish with a half marathon.

Speaker 1 (02:35):
Well, I mean when you get to the iron Man,
half Ironman and Ironman distance at that point you've you've
committed to misery. Yeah, it's yeah, you're you're that's it.
It's very impressive that Dallas Clark just decided to do one,
never having done a triathlon before, and then he's just like, yeah,
I'm just gonna just gonna do the full you know.
I mean that's the thing about that sport is like

(02:57):
it's it's really not that hard to die on a
training plan and you just gotta make time for it.

Speaker 2 (03:01):
You should do a lot of just a lot of training,
a lot of swimming.

Speaker 4 (03:04):
Yeah, It's it's not like you're, you know, trying to
get all these crazy metrics for how to maximize your
no ten yard dash timed.

Speaker 1 (03:14):
Yeah, yeah, your power output. You know.

Speaker 4 (03:17):
You go, you run a few times a week, you
bike a few times a week, you swim a few
times a week.

Speaker 2 (03:22):
Yeah, Grant, when's your next triathle?

Speaker 3 (03:26):
Uh? Probably never, I'm gonna be honest. Never, I don't.

Speaker 1 (03:29):
I don't.

Speaker 3 (03:29):
Okay, never is probably a strong word, but I don't know.
I got a lot of I got a lot of
other steps we got to take just getting Grants life
together before we can worry about like, Okay, I'm gonna
I'm now going to focus on you know, my my
biking speed folks, and all other stuff you know we got.
We're in the job market right now. It's football season. Like,
I gotta the Hawks need me on Saturdays.

Speaker 4 (03:50):
I can't be on a bike.

Speaker 3 (03:51):
I gotta I gotta be locked in.

Speaker 1 (03:53):
Hey, they need you big time this Saturday. Welcome in
everybody to the Fight for Floyd podcast. Floyd of Rosedale
ninety eight pounds of bronze pot pod and it feels
heavier than ninety eight pounds, CAB. I know you've probably
carried that trophy several times on it does feel heavyer.

Speaker 4 (04:10):
It feels like ninety eight point three pounds, but yeah.

Speaker 1 (04:14):
To me, it feels like one hundred and ninety eight
point three pounds.

Speaker 3 (04:18):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (04:18):
The first time I carried it was with Boone Myers,
I believe, and he's taller than me, and so it
was just angled onto my shoulder and I think I
got seventy percent of the weight. Felt real heavy, felt
really heavy. Hey, everybody this week actually talking about workouts

(04:39):
as we get into this program. When you hit the
gym this week, YMCA anytime Fitness twenty four out, you
know wherever you go grab grab like the sixty or
seventy pound dumbbell and just walk around the track with
that for like, I don't know, like three to five minutes.
Give you like a slight idea of like carrying Floyd
off the field. Get in, get in the zone. Not

(05:02):
only do the Hawks need zone.

Speaker 3 (05:04):
You can buy it. Not a sponsor trophies. Now you
can buy like a mini Floyd.

Speaker 2 (05:09):
Oh yeah, you can buy the minis.

Speaker 3 (05:11):
Put a sixty pound dumbell on top of or below it.

Speaker 1 (05:14):
I guess you can just you could just tape mini
Floyd to a dumbbell and just carry it around. Act
like dude, I don't.

Speaker 3 (05:21):
Think it's I don't think it's It's obviously not that big.
It's meant for like your desk.

Speaker 2 (05:24):
Sure if you just surprise Kevin doesn't have one.

Speaker 4 (05:26):
Actually, oh we do, My parents do.

Speaker 3 (05:29):
I don't have one.

Speaker 1 (05:29):
There you go, there, not surprising. Shout out to the
word parents. By the way, legends, Uh, they're gonna need
you grant on Saturday. They're gonna need everybody. This is
this is a big time win. You don't get to
carry the trophy off the field until you win the
ball game. And winning in the Big Ten. Isn't easy?
We enter Big Ten play here, keV. What's different about

(05:52):
not about the conference schedule than the than the non
con Is there anything that actually changes it?

Speaker 3 (05:58):
Actually?

Speaker 4 (05:58):
The teams are usually better.

Speaker 1 (06:00):
Are they? This isn't it, This isn't Illinois State. It's
unfortunate that.

Speaker 4 (06:05):
It'd be cool if we played them twelve times ear.

Speaker 3 (06:08):
Just be a great rivalry.

Speaker 1 (06:10):
Can you imagine by like the eighth game, you just
line up again, You're like, God, damn these guys again.

Speaker 4 (06:15):
Can you imagine if you just kept doing like every
other week at each other's teams, Like, all right, we're
gonna bust to Bloomington, Illinois again.

Speaker 1 (06:24):
Just the most electric series.

Speaker 4 (06:26):
And yeah, and you know, like there's there's the hotels
that have good food the day before the game, the
hotels that have bad food.

Speaker 1 (06:34):
Mm.

Speaker 4 (06:34):
You just know that you're not getting a good meal
in Bloomington, Illinois.

Speaker 1 (06:38):
We did get a good meal though in Minneapolis several times.
Oh yeah, yeah, Minneapolis had a great amenities. In fact,
I think the first time we traveled there would have
been twenty fourteen when we got smacked. Yeah, yep, yeah,
we got we got I brought that up on the
pod with with David Iiclet today. If you haven't checked

(06:59):
that one out, go listen to the Wednesday KF press reveal.
We went for like almost forty minutes, really good stuff
in there. Breaking down the postgame press conference. The Tuesday presser,
we talked about that game because Kaff brought up in
his press conference that he doesn't remember a game where

(07:19):
he saw somebody score one guy score three touchdowns on
him and just never be touched on any of the plays.
And I was like, whoa Max Williams game pretty close
in twenty fourteen.

Speaker 4 (07:33):
He was probably touched, but he's probably touched once or twice.
But yeah, I think he had three touchdowns.

Speaker 2 (07:39):
He had three touchdowns. I went back and looked at
the stats.

Speaker 1 (07:42):
Do you want to know how many catches he had
in that game? Just five? Three of them were for touchdowns.

Speaker 4 (07:48):
Yeah, we probably knocked him up a few drafts wats
at that game.

Speaker 1 (07:53):
Oh yeah, he's still in the league.

Speaker 4 (07:55):
We got him in the NFL.

Speaker 1 (07:57):
While I don't know, check that Max Williams from Minnesota,
Grant see if he's still in the league. I he
bounced around for a while, for sure, but he was
not as good as we made him look that day,
tough day, and that until last year was the last
time that we had lost to Minnesota correct, yes, twenty fourteen,
and then it took all the way until a non

(08:18):
illegal fair catch bullshit call.

Speaker 3 (08:20):
To hasn't played since twenty twenty two. Okay, so he's
washed always Baltimore Riven for a long time though, and
his career as a cardinal, it looks like good for him,
good for him.

Speaker 2 (08:33):
A few things to talk about tonight.

Speaker 1 (08:35):
We'll bring up the We'll bring up the Grant Top
twenty five because you know, why not, it's the most important,
most prestigious top twenty five there is. I think we
have a couple couple questions that I have banked. Oh yeah,
and actually it's one of they're both from Lister from

(08:55):
the Patreon and one of them actually pertains to one
of our games against me of Soda, so we can
we can ask those two questions. We're obviously going to
go over awards winners towards the back end of this podcast,
and I don't know, maybe we get into some other
crazy stuff, who knows.

Speaker 4 (09:09):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (09:10):
I did have a delicious two scoop of salted Oreo
ice cream before this podcast, just a goaded flavor. And uh,
I wish you guys had ice cream too. It was
that good that I wish maybe you did have ice cream.

Speaker 4 (09:24):
I don't know, I could use some ice cream, Kevin.

Speaker 1 (09:26):
Kevin probably had broccoli and boiled chicken breast.

Speaker 4 (09:30):
Now I had some seared uh ah, tuna mixed it
up today?

Speaker 1 (09:33):
Really yeah?

Speaker 3 (09:35):
Wow tropical?

Speaker 2 (09:38):
Uh So, Kevin, you like this game.

Speaker 1 (09:43):
It's a good game. You like this trophy.

Speaker 4 (09:45):
It's the best trophy in the Big Ten.

Speaker 1 (09:47):
Best trophy in the country.

Speaker 4 (09:50):
Uh, the National Championship Trophy might take.

Speaker 1 (09:52):
The cake outside of outside of the Natty, You're like
rivalry trophies.

Speaker 4 (09:59):
It's it's it's got to be up there.

Speaker 3 (10:01):
Did you guys like the crystal ball or the neutrol?

Speaker 4 (10:04):
Love the crystal ball?

Speaker 1 (10:05):
Crystal I can't believe they rather than a.

Speaker 4 (10:07):
College football playoffs one.

Speaker 3 (10:08):
I can't believe they got rid of the crystal ball.

Speaker 4 (10:10):
They should not have done that.

Speaker 1 (10:11):
Yeah, they that's they messed up there.

Speaker 3 (10:13):
It was perfect bring it.

Speaker 1 (10:14):
That was bad move, bad move.

Speaker 3 (10:17):
Uh.

Speaker 4 (10:17):
Bull trophy that has just Bowl four Oranges sense pretty
pretty great.

Speaker 1 (10:22):
Yeah, there's some good ones in the Big ten. They
got the uh the old oaken bucket. They got the axe.

Speaker 4 (10:28):
I like the old oak and bucket.

Speaker 3 (10:30):
The ax is cool.

Speaker 1 (10:31):
The axes cool.

Speaker 4 (10:33):
The brass buttoons were cool.

Speaker 1 (10:35):
Oh.

Speaker 3 (10:35):
The the one that Michigan State versus Penn State is
the most insanely large like box for no reason. It's
a what is it called, give me a second, sorry,
a box you would It's like the land Grant Trophy
or something. It's and it's just it's just a giant
wooden box.

Speaker 1 (10:52):
I think the best thing about the pig is it
started out as a real pig. I think we should
I think we should actually double double over on it
and pass the bronze pig back and forth, but also
just go back to a real pig.

Speaker 4 (11:04):
We should definitely get the real pig going.

Speaker 1 (11:06):
And you know what, at the Iowa and Minnesota state
fairs are both huge. It can have a spot at
either fair wherever it was for the year.

Speaker 4 (11:14):
And can you imagine, say, say like the winning team
gets to eat the pigs the team yes in the
Kork State, I.

Speaker 1 (11:24):
Mean dude, Pete and Kim Harmon Grays they were they
were banging out the pig roasts. They brought the pig
into the facility, sat it right down on the on
the carving table. Why couldn't that be an actual pig
that like sat in Minnesota for the year. I think
we get. I think we get like a little bit
like ancestral here, we get, we get a little bit savage.

(11:48):
You know, maybe we sacrificed the pig on the field
right after the game.

Speaker 4 (11:54):
It's not that's not getting let's not get carried away.

Speaker 3 (11:56):
Here like that might be a health code violation somewhere
in for pig sacrifice. Edmindfield you put a tarp out,
there might be a you might get a penalty from
the NCAA for a pig sacrifice.

Speaker 2 (12:08):
I will say, we go on the road here, first
road game of the year.

Speaker 1 (12:10):
Maybe we can talk about some of the unique aspects
of going on the road. But Kevin, Minnesota, one of
the better spots to go as far as a road
stady nice away locker room, yeah, great away locker room,
lots of space on the sidelines. M hm.

Speaker 4 (12:27):
Such as far enough away that you get to fly,
but it's not a long flight, so that's pretty clutch.

Speaker 1 (12:32):
I was having this conversation with Lauren a few days ago.
We kind of randomly drove to and from places. I
feel like sometimes we like drove there but flew home occasionally,
like not just a Minnesota but other What was the arrangement?
Did we always flew to and from Minnesota?

Speaker 4 (12:53):
Minnesota is always flying? Yeah?

Speaker 1 (12:55):
Did we drive back from Nebraska?

Speaker 4 (12:58):
At one point we flew Toca to and from to
and from you're thinking of Illinois. One year we drove
to Illinois and flew back, but it's because we stayed
way far outside of town because like the hotels were
booked or something like that. Okay, So we stayed like
a half hour outside Champagne. So we drove there and

(13:18):
then we flew from Champagne back to Cedar Rapids.

Speaker 1 (13:21):
Did we did we drive to Wisconsin?

Speaker 4 (13:24):
We drove to Wisconsin and.

Speaker 1 (13:26):
Then we had to drive to Purdue the one time
because the Chicago they grounded flights.

Speaker 4 (13:31):
Yeah, because some there's a fire, like one of the
air traffic control things.

Speaker 1 (13:37):
Tried to light a fire. Yeah, that was that.

Speaker 4 (13:39):
Was a tough tough trip.

Speaker 3 (13:41):
So was it a Purdue fan? Was it on purpose?

Speaker 1 (13:45):
Could have been? Do you want to bring up that
trophy there on the on the side there ground what
is this this is.

Speaker 3 (13:49):
The this is the land Grand Trophy. Like I was
talking about.

Speaker 2 (13:51):
It looks like a drinking fountain.

Speaker 3 (13:53):
It's just a giant wooden box. I don't know what's
going on here. But it's also massive. It's like it's
I think it's four and a half to five feet.

Speaker 1 (14:01):
I gotta be honest, it's ugly. That's a terrible trophy.
It's not a good trophy.

Speaker 4 (14:04):
That might be worse than the Hero's Trophy.

Speaker 1 (14:06):
The Big Ten has a lot of the best ones.
I don't really even know of any good trophies outside
of the Big Ten, Like what what revelries have good trophies?

Speaker 4 (14:17):
Here is the egg Bowl in Mississippi. Yeah, the Big
ten has the biggest, like trophy, uh tradition. I think
SEC has a couple. I think there's one out doesn't
doesn't is it Oregon Oregon State or Washington Washington State?
I think they play for one.

Speaker 3 (14:37):
I think both do you Apple Cup and.

Speaker 4 (14:40):
Apple Civil War?

Speaker 1 (14:43):
I know they call it the Civil War, but does
the does Army Navy? Is there a trophy associated with
that game? There's got to be some kind of trophy
or like some maybe not a trophy, but something that's
passed back and forth.

Speaker 4 (14:55):
I feel like they there's the Commanders in Chief trophy,
but that's between Air Force two.

Speaker 5 (15:00):
True.

Speaker 1 (15:01):
Yeah, I feel like, actually, now that USC is a
part of the Big Ten, they should have a protected
game with Michigan State and they should play for a sword.

Speaker 4 (15:13):
Smarts US Spartans.

Speaker 1 (15:14):
Yeah, I feel like that would make sense, I think,
and make it a long sword like twelve.

Speaker 3 (15:19):
Feet isn't at I think it's Western Michigan plays for
like a giant cannon against another directional Michigan really could
be wrong about that.

Speaker 4 (15:29):
There's a can know the canon's in the Big Ten somewhere.
It's uh or should everyone just play for it?

Speaker 1 (15:37):
There's a cannonet Perdue that they blow to Heath.

Speaker 4 (15:40):
They Purdue is one of the schools who plays for it.

Speaker 2 (15:43):
Were granted, we're talking about the other day.

Speaker 1 (15:45):
I took Grant and I were talking about the other day, keV,
how Purdue drives that fricking train onto the field. They
got they got that like makeshift boiler that they drive
out on the field, and they got it stuck last
year I think, or maybe even earlier this season.

Speaker 4 (16:03):
Yeah, Illinois and Purdue play for the Purdue cannon.

Speaker 3 (16:06):
Oh shoot, how about that. I'm also seeing Nevada and
UNLV play for a cannon. Wow, there's a lot of
cannon games going on.

Speaker 1 (16:13):
They should play for like a poker chip or something
like that bag of poker chip.

Speaker 3 (16:18):
I think Nevada is in Reno, though, isn't it. I
could be wrong about that, I mean either.

Speaker 1 (16:22):
Way, Uh, have you had any bacon this week?

Speaker 4 (16:26):
Kevin zero bacon?

Speaker 1 (16:28):
Dude, Yeah, I've had I've had none either. It almost
feels like you don't deserve it, like when you don't
have the when you don't have the pick.

Speaker 4 (16:36):
You know what, maybe that's a good way to spin it. Yeah,
out of my bacon on Sunday morning. Hell yeah, hell yeah.

Speaker 1 (16:43):
Shout out to the Pork producers though former sponsor of
the podcast, maybe future sponsor. I don't know, not right now,
but I'll give them a shout out anyway, because they
were great to work with and I love pork. So.

Speaker 2 (16:55):
Uh, this is the worst.

Speaker 4 (16:58):
The worst trophy is the bid a broken chair trophy
between Minnesota and Nebraska.

Speaker 3 (17:03):
It's a broken chair.

Speaker 4 (17:05):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (17:07):
Do you get like just a puzzle piece basically a
puzzle does the does like the giant pop Tart and
the pop Tarts bull count as like a or we
just do a revalue games. I feel like the lore
there could really expand over the next few years.

Speaker 2 (17:22):
They came out strong with that Bowl game.

Speaker 3 (17:24):
That was I mean that was like a giant toaster. Dude. Yeah,
then he gets feasted on by the winning team. Yeah,
oh this is this isn't the this trophy could be worse.
I'm gonna be honest here.

Speaker 1 (17:36):
It's pretty bad. Let's be honest. Show that thing, pull
that thing up.

Speaker 3 (17:40):
I mean, it's not what I pictured, but I mean, come.

Speaker 4 (17:44):
On, it's a broken chair.

Speaker 1 (17:47):
What are we what are we doing in the history
of this game?

Speaker 4 (17:50):
I don't I don't know game they started playing each
other twelve years ago.

Speaker 1 (17:55):
You want to know something that is interesting is it
wasn't a fair catch. So, oh, what kind of feelings
did you have when Coop did that last year? My
immediate reaction before they made the bullshit call on a
replay that they weren't even reviewing if it was a
fair catcher not which First of all, how was that
even legal to go back and do that? My first

(18:16):
thought was I was giggling like a school girl on
the couch watching it and I literally said out loud,
he did it again. That son of a bitch did
it again.

Speaker 3 (18:28):
What was the two walk off kick returns in three weeks?

Speaker 1 (18:32):
And not only that, he joked the entire team. And
now the Eagles are just wasting his talent in the
second string spot. Get him on the field. That's why
they deserve to lose the other night, but to Atlanta
at home because they're not playing Cooper Degene more dumb, stupid,
not smart. Any fond memories from this revel rico? I

(18:55):
think I had my best tackle ever against Minnesota solo
with game twenty fifteen.

Speaker 4 (19:05):
That was a fun game. That might have been one.

Speaker 1 (19:07):
Of the.

Speaker 5 (19:09):
Hey, it's Peter Harmon, the food guru here to talk
about Gray's Gourmey to Go. At Gray's Gourmet to Go,
we are madly and passionately in love with three things
chicken lips, pizza, and great food to go. We believe
you want to feed your family something great at home,
but you're too busy withd like to stop and cook.
That's why we built Gray's Gourmey to Go, so the

(19:31):
next time you need to feed the gang and you
don't feel like cooking. Just come to grays Gormey togo
dot com.

Speaker 6 (19:39):
This is Leopesha and I've been saying hit a deer,
call Premiere for years, but it's time for something new.
It's still where you need to go for deer divots
and door dings as well as damage dashboards. That's what
my dad Nathan's driving at and dreams about. Why not say,
when your car is dinged, be a deer and call Premiere.
I think Dad's gonna love that Premiere Automotive, North Liberty's

(20:00):
Auto Body repair shop.

Speaker 5 (20:02):
Be a deer and call Premier Auto Body in North Liberty.

Speaker 4 (20:07):
That was a really, really awesome environment in Kinnick that game.

Speaker 1 (20:11):
Yeah, jerseys were sick.

Speaker 4 (20:12):
To jerseys were sick. That was right after the wrestling
team beat Oklahoma State.

Speaker 1 (20:18):
In the All Time Day in Kennick.

Speaker 4 (20:21):
Yeah, Crape on the grid iron offense put up forty.
Defense did not play good, so that wasn't cool. But
Kinnick was pretty special that night.

Speaker 1 (20:32):
It was. It was special. And actually one of our
questions from Listy comes from that day. He said, I
remember the Iowa chant going crazy long after the Daniels
touchdown run. What was it like as an Iowan, what
should have slid? Okay, what was it like as an
Iowan and a Hawkeye player to listen to that for
the last ten minutes gave me goosebumps just watching it

(20:54):
back on YouTube.

Speaker 4 (20:55):
I was thinking for ten minutes how he should have
taken any.

Speaker 1 (21:01):
Tough day, tougher day for the defense? What was what
was going on that? Did you remember specifically? What was
happened like why?

Speaker 4 (21:08):
I think they had a couple of big plays on us,
and they were honestly just they're they're nitpicking our own
defense pretty well. On the passing game.

Speaker 1 (21:17):
They just decided to run the patience that day and
it was working.

Speaker 4 (21:20):
Yeah. We were playing a lot of cover too to
the boundary, and they were just kind of picking it
apart a little bit.

Speaker 2 (21:26):
I remember us getting diced up a little.

Speaker 4 (21:29):
Yeah, and we gave up a few big plays. I
don't hmm. I think one at least one of one
was a trick play.

Speaker 1 (21:37):
You know. What was really satisfying about that game too,
is uh, like we were going to be we were
every week after like Week eight or whatever, we were
going to be eight to o for the first time
since two thousand and nine. Ten nine to oh for
the first that was. That was week ten, and uh
like ten wins. We had not experienced that yet. Actually,

(21:59):
to that point, we hadn't even experienced nine wins, so
we had already set a new personal record for our career.
But Minnesota was pretty good that year. I think they
were eight and one coming into that game, and they
were ranked I believe, and so like, there was a
lot of it was a pretty hyped up like. There

(22:19):
was a lot of fanfare, like it was the environment
was juiced, I remember specifically. I don't know if it
was because of the jerseys, or if because it was
a night game, or it was just everything combined. But
when the specialists ran out eighteen hours early for warm up,
like we always did, there were significantly more fans already
in the stadium than a normal game. It was. It

(22:42):
was rocking that god, it was. It was a fun time.
I flipped a guy in that game on a pat
or on a field goal and put him right on
his head, and that felt good. It was just a
fun game all around. To answer the question, I do
remember chant going wildly long. Kevin was evidently pissed that

(23:05):
Lashawan didn't slide well Lashan back.

Speaker 4 (23:06):
Home to talk about if he did. If he did slide,
we would have kneed out the game and we wouldn't
have had to sweat the outside kick after they scored
in about a minute twenty after we kicked a golf
to them. So yeah, should have taken a fucking slide.

Speaker 1 (23:20):
No faith, no faith, it's got no faith in his
own defense.

Speaker 4 (23:25):
I just like taking the wins when when it's right
there for you to take.

Speaker 1 (23:29):
I remember the chant going super long and me working
back and forth of the emotions of Wow, this is
really cool night game. So it's just it's the perfect environment.
And as a specialist, we kicked that field goal after
Lashan scores a touchdown or the pat and then I
just go sit on the bench and I'm just.

Speaker 2 (23:46):
Like, it's just that that doule roar.

Speaker 1 (23:50):
As I pay attention to the game, and I'm kind
of staying keyed into what you know, as the defense
starts to get kind of beat up a little bit
on that short drive or but then you still hear
it ah oh, and you're just like, is this still going?
Like it's one of those moments where you get to

(24:11):
disassociate with being a player for just a second at
least as a specialist. Very hard to do if you
play other positions, especially if you're on defense at that point.
Kevin probably didn't experience that. But you get to look
up and you get to be like this, this was
the environment that you hope that you get to be
a part of. This is one of those times where
you just this is why you fought so hard and

(24:33):
wanted to get your foot in the door because to
be a part of something like this is something you
remember for a really long time and a chance to
do really something special. And fortunately we did. We won
that game and won the next two games, and it
was the great season that we all remember. But yeah,
Sean could have slid.

Speaker 4 (24:53):
It just wouldn't make it that much better because you know,
we wouldn't get a touchdown and people would have been like,
oh shit, we have to reco over the on side kick.
You know, people could have enjoyed the iowh ch as
we as we you know, trotted into all right, I
guess we that was to win backflod because we lost
the previous year.

Speaker 1 (25:11):
But yeah, you're right, you're right. Twenty fourteen bad year
for trophies.

Speaker 4 (25:17):
Just got fucking slotted.

Speaker 1 (25:19):
Just just over four, you know, and everyone was everyone
was gut wrenching in its own way. Iowa State lost
at the end, in absolutely pummeled, just bent over Minnesota's
lap and paddled like it like like we were in
an old one room school.

Speaker 4 (25:40):
That might have been the worst. That might have felt
worse than the pumbling we took from Stanford.

Speaker 1 (25:47):
Oh yeah it was because because Minnesota, or yeah, because
Minnesota wasn't like some great team Stanford at least had,
I mean they had Jesus on their roster.

Speaker 4 (25:58):
Yeah, and it was just five yard to carry every
single carry and just oh nine plays later than the
end zone and could do absolutely nothing on offense. But yeah,
got absolutely pummeled by Minnesota. Played Wisconsin really tough. Actually
that year. Wisconsin was really good. Melvin Gordon's on the

(26:19):
team that year. Oh we we were actually a couple
of plays away.

Speaker 1 (26:24):
From could have won that wiscons could have won that one.
That was.

Speaker 4 (26:27):
That was a tough game there was. They're a really
good team that year though.

Speaker 1 (26:30):
Yeah, they they twisted like a motherfucker on the on
the old punts. That wasn't good.

Speaker 4 (26:36):
Yeah, and then uh, next I think it's the following
week Nebraska, we uh, oh god, we give a two
touchdown lead late in the second half.

Speaker 2 (26:46):
You could, quite quite honestly.

Speaker 4 (26:48):
That's what that's that's that's why we stopped doing pro
puns after that game.

Speaker 1 (26:52):
You could you could track the last decade of success
on special teams back to that twenty fourteen Nebraska game.
It was a spart that it was the last straw
we were gonna either. You know that clip where he's
like where the reporters like, how do you feel like you?
How do you feel like you? Guys executed in that
first half, and the coach is like, execution. Yeah, I'm

(27:15):
in favor of execution. Maybe our whole team needs to
be helped.

Speaker 3 (27:18):
Brian Kelly, Yeah, Brian Kelly, Yeah.

Speaker 1 (27:21):
And I think our coaches probably would have echoed that
that Brian Kelly sentiment after that Nebraska game. I could
have seen Coach Wallace saying something like that. That would have
been hilarious to hearing Coach Wallace's voice. Yeah, tough, tough year,
and it obviously then it led to some cool stuff
in twenty fifteen. Talk about a few other things here

(27:43):
in a second, but great, you want to pull up
that g Bone Top twenty five.

Speaker 3 (27:47):
Sure, yeah, I will say this is the worst. Uh,
this is gonna be the This was the toughest g
Bone top my five I think that you've ever done.
I just I mean, if you're like looking at the
teams right now, I don't know if it is. I
know you got to rank twenty five teams, but I
just I don't I didn't want to rank like most
of these teams.

Speaker 2 (28:07):
There wasn't twenty five deserved teams.

Speaker 3 (28:09):
Well we got a three way tie at twenty five
for just a toss up.

Speaker 1 (28:13):
Wow, I don't know. Just how did you not give
that to Northern Illinois. We talked about this on on
taglines on two.

Speaker 3 (28:21):
Well, we talked about how notice like you can't rank
Notre Dame above Northern Illinois, but you can show love
to UNLV had a great win.

Speaker 1 (28:31):
Memphis had a great win. Like they've been doing good
this year unl V. Who they beat Kansas? They beat
Kansas at Kansas. It was supposed to be good this
year in the Memphis. What did they do?

Speaker 3 (28:40):
They beat Florida State?

Speaker 1 (28:42):
A yeah, oh so funny. I just saw this, you know,
the Florida State gye Week one or maybe week two
if we lose to if we lose to Georgia Tech,
I will eat a pileot dog shit. You guys saw that, right, yep.
That guy had to delete it entire our social media
presence because people were gonna actually make him do it.

Speaker 3 (29:03):
I think he's back now, by the way.

Speaker 1 (29:04):
Oh well, so that became a total meme, right, And
this week there's a Kansas State account yeah that said uh,
and it's I think it's saint. Oh god, what was
the old coach's name?

Speaker 3 (29:21):
Is Bill Snyder?

Speaker 1 (29:22):
Saint Bill Snyder is the is the Twitter account and
he tweeted if we lose, who do they play this week?
This is uh?

Speaker 3 (29:31):
Do I have the tweet? It's just like b YU.
By the way, I don't actually I don't know if
I can say this, but if k State loses to
b YU, I'll shove a BP five layer burrito up
by ass.

Speaker 1 (29:43):
It's better when you say it. If if if k
State loses to b YU, I will shove a BP
five So then so then Cyclone Jerry, who's like a
very well known popular like.

Speaker 3 (30:07):
Cyclone Jerry, Cyclone cyclone, But those are both people.

Speaker 1 (30:11):
Cyclone Larry he quote tweeted that and said, if Iowa
State loses to Arkansas State, I will eat the five
layer burrito bv five layer burrito that this guy shoves
us Twitter and I just had one of those moments

(30:32):
where people are like, dude, this site is free. I'm
never deleting this app. Like God, the Internet is fucking amazing. Man.

Speaker 2 (30:42):
That is some good stuff Twitter.

Speaker 1 (30:44):
By the way, speaking of burritos, Kevin, somebody tweeted at
the walk Ons yesterday a couple fat burritos from Ponchero's
and said, Hey, wants a snack, who's the meal.

Speaker 4 (30:54):
That's gospel right there?

Speaker 1 (30:56):
That's Bible. Uh still need to make that into a
T shirt with like a character caricaturized Kevin face.

Speaker 4 (31:02):
No free ads.

Speaker 1 (31:05):
You're right, we gotta get him to pay us first.
So let's talk about a little bit of this uh
Heisman front runner with nine touchdowns jaint Jainty. Yeah, in
twenty four there right behind the Nebraska corn suckers. Unfortunately,
I just you look at Nebraska schedule. We did that
little breakdown with with Searles and el Nebrunoy. Big game

(31:28):
potentially the biggest game of the weekend.

Speaker 4 (31:29):
I think it's gonna be a good game this week.

Speaker 1 (31:31):
I think it's gonna be a great game Nebraska wins
that game, and especially if they do it any any
sort of handily. There's you know they have they have
not a tough schedule. Uh, there's they They could be
ranked with a number next to their name for for
quite some time. Illinois Syracuse, Syracuse up there, the the

(31:52):
opposite blue and orange. I like to love this Iowa
State sitting there at twenty. Just we let them off
the hook some Unfortunately, they are who they are who
we thought they were. Love that you don't have Notre
Dame in there. We talked about that, like we said.

Speaker 3 (32:07):
Just does we'll probably craw if they keep winning, they'll
probably crawl back in there. But of course they will
because they can't be above northern Illinois right now.

Speaker 1 (32:13):
No, absolutely not. But they are in the a people,
which is absolutely disgusting. Clemson falling off the face of
the earth, just a poverty program nowadays, but still in
there at seventeen. Michigan slips by Arkansas State.

Speaker 3 (32:26):
Still I still think I still think Clem's pretty good.
By the way, just for the record, that was a joke.

Speaker 1 (32:31):
Okay, they aren't Deshaun Watson good.

Speaker 3 (32:36):
No, I don't think they're gonna win the national title
this year, but I think they're I think they will
improve from seventeen. That's the course of the season goes on.

Speaker 1 (32:43):
Anything else, I'm k State, Case State up there, Oklahoma State.

Speaker 2 (32:47):
I mean a couple teams that have that struggled a
couple of weeks ago.

Speaker 1 (32:51):
Really the only move.

Speaker 3 (32:52):
Was Arizona dropped out and then I put the three
way tie in there for fun. That was all they
really change.

Speaker 1 (32:58):
Even with a one point win where they should have lost,
Georgia stays up top.

Speaker 3 (33:01):
Huh Yeah, I mean yeah. I mean I think playing
on the on the road there a Kentucky can kind
of get tricky. I like Stoops, It's good coach, great coach, Yeah,
but I think it seams can slip up occasionally. But
I also like Ohio State. I mean, like, I don't
want to punish them for winning. I guess when we

(33:21):
know George is very good.

Speaker 1 (33:23):
You want to know something fun that Grant and I
figured out on Tuesday, keV hey Man, Washington State's going
to be the playoff.

Speaker 3 (33:30):
They might go eleven and one. The schedule was not
the schedule was very winnable.

Speaker 1 (33:36):
Now grant, yeah, I guess what.

Speaker 4 (33:38):
They're just playing like a bunch of Mountain West teams.

Speaker 3 (33:40):
Right essentially, Yeah, and then they beat like that, they're undefeated.

Speaker 4 (33:45):
Right now, does the Pac twelve qualify as No, they don't.

Speaker 3 (33:49):
They don't. That's what we're asking is like, at what
point are like, are they willing to put eleven and
one Washington State Pack two champion in one of the
top four seats?

Speaker 1 (33:58):
Well?

Speaker 3 (33:59):
Does the Committee of the ball to do that?

Speaker 5 (34:00):
Well?

Speaker 1 (34:01):
The problem is is they those four seeds are automatically
for the Power four the way.

Speaker 4 (34:06):
It's set up, but there's also automatic bids for the
highest group of five champion.

Speaker 1 (34:14):
I think just one. I think it's the fifth seed
is just the highest, and then it's the next seven
highest rated teams or whatever after that.

Speaker 3 (34:23):
But at eleven and one, I mean, if they can
escape Boise, it's gonna get you like undefeated. It isn't
even off the table. Maybe it's gonna get it's gonna
get weird up in Pullman's here here come the Cougars,
And I'm like the Pack two being in the playoff, or.

Speaker 1 (34:41):
They added four teams. There are six team conference.

Speaker 3 (34:43):
Now there'll be the six Pack in like, I don't know.

Speaker 1 (34:49):
It's a sick name by the way.

Speaker 3 (34:50):
Yeah, I think they're gonna steal Memphis and two Lane
as well. But we'll see.

Speaker 1 (34:55):
Oh you're you're a realignment expert.

Speaker 3 (34:56):
Now I'm not.

Speaker 1 (34:57):
It's just a guess, Okay, I I think was the preface.

Speaker 2 (35:01):
You remember when we were going through we were talking
about Wampa.

Speaker 1 (35:04):
I asked Kevin like if he was underperforming, and then
we were like, oh, he's got to be one of
our top recruits. And then we went through those top
recruits grant you kind of listed them off. Sure, we
got to the top and we were like, Kyle Williams,
Who the hell is that? I had like six people
that are older than us, you know, like they're closer
in their upper thirties forties where they were round back
when Kyle Williams was a recruit. Dude, this guy was.

(35:28):
He was the real deal.

Speaker 3 (35:29):
I saw some tweets about him.

Speaker 1 (35:31):
He was nicknamed the bone crusher. He was like he
was a five star, like potentially like one of the
best linebackers in the country, had an offer from everybody,
and then like sort of senior year freshman year at Iowa.
Freshman summer, he like he had a bit of a
mental break and like assaulted to women or I don't

(35:54):
twelve women. Some amount of women went went nuts, like
damn near killed him. I don't know. And he was
in jail until last year. Oh yeah, so you're saying, dude,
but dude, he was the bone crusher though he was.

Speaker 4 (36:09):
So this guy was roared it up for sure.

Speaker 2 (36:12):
He could have been Ryd's.

Speaker 1 (36:12):
I don't know what nobody what year did he get Taiowa.
He was in the class of two thousand and six,
I believe, okay, And I read the entire story because
one of the iowaul be beat writers did a story
on him in twenty nineteen, like went to the prison.

Speaker 4 (36:30):
He's been in jail for almost twenty years.

Speaker 1 (36:33):
He spent almost twenty years in prison. He was His
parole date was sometime in twenty three. I tried to
check and see if, like I didn't do too much
super sleuthing to see if he actually got out. But
he was supposed to get out in like spring of
last year, and he thought he could still play in
the NFL. When they did the article on him in
twenty nineteen. They somebody went to the prison and like

(36:54):
talked to him, had like pictures of him. I'll just
pull him up crazy the Uh but dude out of
high school. This guy was insane.

Speaker 2 (37:03):
He was like he was he was like a.

Speaker 1 (37:06):
Chosen one and then he decided to go psycho. Let's
see if I can find the uh find the article.
But that's who he was, so our best recruit ever
we never got to see play because.

Speaker 4 (37:22):
He tried to kill someone apparently.

Speaker 1 (37:24):
Basically, yeah, there was I think they're sexual assault involved.

Speaker 3 (37:30):
He's not very good at following the law.

Speaker 1 (37:33):
Bad bad, not good at law stuff, at rules.

Speaker 3 (37:41):
Underrated. Part of being a great player is just stay
out of prison.

Speaker 2 (37:44):
Yeah, yeah, you can stay out of prison.

Speaker 3 (37:47):
Undervalued skill, stay out of prison.

Speaker 1 (37:49):
See if I can share this, Uh yeah, this is dude.
The article. So Mark Emmert did the article, and uh,
the title of it is just tracing Kyle Williams past
from highest ranked Kirk Farren's football recruit to an Illinois
prison and his hope for redemption, and then it goes
on to.

Speaker 4 (38:07):
This is like five years ago he did this article.

Speaker 1 (38:09):
Yeah it was. This was done in August of twenty nineteen.
Starts off with how he keeps in shape, and he
just throws some dude in the in the prison, one
of his boys on his shoulders that's two seventy five,
and he just squats with him. I mean, true prison strength.
This guy's just doing squats with some dude that's two
seventy five and like the cell three cells down, you know. Yeah,

(38:36):
but this guy, this is him, now he's jack still.
I mean he's what, he's two thousand and six, so
he would be like thirty eight years old, almost thirty
thirty six, thirty seven years old. Guys jacked. So that's
what happened to our best recruit. Good for us anyway,
it's just smooth transition. Just brought some brought some some

(38:59):
good memories back to a bunch of people who followed
recruiting in the mid two thousands.

Speaker 4 (39:04):
I guess. So that's our biggest miss in recruiting history then.

Speaker 1 (39:10):
Yeah, I mean it's it's a different kind of miss,
but yeah, miss is a miss, right, pretty big miss. Uh.

Speaker 2 (39:22):
We're going to play the Minnesota Gophers on Saturday.

Speaker 1 (39:27):
Minnesota Gophers currently have a top five defense in college
football according to the stats. Now, don't look into it
that they've only played North Carolina, Rhode Island, and Nevada
and Nevada and Rhode Island and even a divisional football team,
and they still only average in their in there against
their competition, which is Minnesota and two other teams of

(39:49):
their caliber, they only average like two hundred and seventy
eight yards of offense. Uh, Nevada is not good. They're
one hundred and fourth in the country and North Carolina
is actually fifty fourth. So the fifty third ranked offense
in the Iowahawkeyes will be the best offense that Minnesota
football has seen this season. We're averaging four hundred and
twenty yards four nineteen? Can we get there versus the

(40:12):
Gophers can? Can Caleb Johnson run on.

Speaker 4 (40:16):
These We're going to put up four hundred yards this game?
I don't think so. But it's gonna be better than
what Minnesota is seen all year.

Speaker 1 (40:26):
Yeah, they definitely haven't seen anybody like Caleb Johnson. No,
be nice to establish that a running attack early, open
up a little bit of the pass game.

Speaker 4 (40:38):
Unless you've tried to tackle in f one fifty, you've
never seen anything like that.

Speaker 1 (40:43):
Have you ever battled a the septicon.

Speaker 2 (40:46):
Then you don't know. Then you don't know what it's
like to tackle number two.

Speaker 4 (40:52):
Are you Jackie Moon and have wrestled a bear in
a stadium before? If not, you don't know what it's
like trying to tackle gim Helm Johnson.

Speaker 1 (41:01):
So have you ever tried to stop a SpaceX rocket
from launching?

Speaker 3 (41:09):
You're doing like a Jeff Foxworthy thing there, Yeah, there
you go like Jeff Foxworthy.

Speaker 2 (41:15):
On the defensive side of the bonder.

Speaker 1 (41:18):
Let me let me check a little total offense here
and see where the Minnesota Minnesota ranks.

Speaker 2 (41:23):
Not top five in total offense.

Speaker 1 (41:25):
They ranked ninety seventh in fact, next to a couple
other Big ten buddies ninety fifth Northwestern and ninety six,
with consin Iowa State ninety third. By the way, Minnesota
ninety seven good number ninety seventh in offense, they're only
averaging three hundred and fifty yards per game five point
six to nine yards per play, So you know, no

(41:48):
world beater offense coming in versus our defense. Although you
know we've given up some big plays, I personally think
the big plays are gonna be okay. Someone had a
question specifically for Kevin this week I believe this was
one of our followers. Auto on Twitter said, I wonder
if the Hawkeys run more three high on defense with
Quinn X and Cohen to try and eliminate the deep
ball that's been getting us. No, okay, No.

Speaker 4 (42:14):
Cover cover three is not a strong coverage versus versus
deep threats. You play cover three either if you run
run a fire zone, so you want to bring pressure,
or you want to get an extra guy in the
box to defend against the run. It's not a strong
coverage just to be playing as your base coverage.

Speaker 1 (42:35):
What could I word this? Do we just decide to
play better and what we've been playing or is there
something we can play more of coverage wise that may
help us out with some of the deep balls that
we've given up.

Speaker 4 (42:52):
Yeah, just playing better is usually good advice. That usually
sure if you follow it usually works generally generally. No,
So the the one the second deep ball versus Troy,
we checked the cover two. It wasn't the original call.

(43:15):
There's something for some reason, like we checked the cover
two and playing cover two to the field in college football,
like obviously the hashes are pretty wide, so like the
field is a lot wider than if you're going to
the field in the NFL, it's it's kind of hard

(43:35):
to play cover too. So I mean they had a
good play call versus a bad coverage for that, and
obviously his feet got caught in sand there for a second.
So sure, but no, just playing our base coverage better
would would just be ideal. And it's it's obviously the
best coverage versus verst deep threats is because you always

(43:58):
give the too high shell. Look, yeah, I just got
to play it better.

Speaker 1 (44:02):
Just gotta be better.

Speaker 4 (44:03):
It's gotta be better.

Speaker 1 (44:04):
Just be better. Do you think they you think, uh
Minnesota come out and try and pick on t J. Hall.

Speaker 4 (44:10):
I wouldn't try to pick on Jamar Harris.

Speaker 1 (44:12):
Yeah, probably a bad idea. Or Sebastian probably don't want
to pick on him either.

Speaker 4 (44:18):
No, I wouldn't. I wouldn't. I don't want to say
pick on t J. Hall because I mean, he's still
a pretty solid player but decent. There's not a whole
lot of else other places to even go try, you
know what I mean?

Speaker 1 (44:32):
Yeah, So.

Speaker 4 (44:34):
Yeah, I mean, if I was in o C, I'm like, okay,
this this guy might be our chance to make something happen,
because we've got a really solid front. We've got really
good minebackers. There's not a whole lot of places, like.

Speaker 1 (44:52):
There's not a lot of spots to be like, here's
our opportunity.

Speaker 4 (44:55):
We got advantage this guy, that guy, that guy. I
want to get these two, you know, one on one
one situation. No, the one thing. I mean, they got
just a really big offensive line.

Speaker 1 (45:08):
So do they do?

Speaker 4 (45:10):
They have a big liney, they got some big boys.

Speaker 2 (45:14):
Gotta get pressure we need to.

Speaker 4 (45:15):
I think they average like three twenty. Yeah, it's great.
So yeah, yeah, exactly.

Speaker 1 (45:23):
Hey, I'm only about ten pounds away from playing weight
right now, bro, like two five.

Speaker 4 (45:27):
Isn't that been true for the last like seven.

Speaker 1 (45:29):
I've been No, no, no, no, I've been I've been around
like one ninety for like the last three four years.

Speaker 2 (45:33):
I'm sitting like two o five right now.

Speaker 4 (45:35):
Beefy, do you want to go play five tech against
these guys?

Speaker 1 (45:39):
I prefer not to, And I don't think that'd be
goe to a smart move by uh, you know, our
defensive line staff, defensive staff in general. If they need me,
I will, I'll give them, I'll give them my best.
But I don't think that advice is just go down
and create a pile.

Speaker 4 (45:54):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (45:55):
Oh, I'm going for knees. I'm biting kneecaps. I'm going
Dan Campbell on these motherfuckers. Does it bother you that
there's maybe a better than not chance that PJ. Fleck
fornicated with the trophy over the past season? Why do
you have to ruin an I like that that he
potentially took Floyd of which you and I both have held,

(46:18):
and he actually took it home and into his bed
with him. Wife wasn't there, and he actually did weird
things to it. Is that Is that weighing on your head?

Speaker 4 (46:27):
I don't like that you said it, But yeah, there's
a non zero percent chance that that happened.

Speaker 1 (46:32):
Yeah, does that give us the edge with this game?
Is anybody edging in this game?

Speaker 4 (46:41):
Oh shit, I've been edging.

Speaker 1 (46:43):
I've been edged for this old goddamn podcast. I need
Floyd back in Iowa City.

Speaker 2 (46:50):
Oh peene J Fleck?

Speaker 1 (46:52):
Huh uh? What a guy see a fake juice?

Speaker 4 (46:57):
You know what he is. He's a guy who sells
a pyramid scheme who found his way into college football.

Speaker 1 (47:04):
No, he's a multi level marketer for sure.

Speaker 4 (47:07):
Yeah, he's selling one of those new cryptocurrencies.

Speaker 1 (47:11):
Oh yeah, Pj's got tons of crypto dude.

Speaker 4 (47:14):
PJ has so much work ship.

Speaker 1 (47:16):
But yeah, no, he's he's got he's got so many
NFTs that have that have just tanked to zero. Poor guy.
Not really all right, We got Kevin off to bed.
This guy's about to fall asleep. Grant you got anything
to say about PJ Fleck and the trophy.

Speaker 3 (47:31):
If we don't win this game, uh, I would be
insanely depressed for it.

Speaker 2 (47:38):
And I didn't want to mention that. I didn't even
want to bring that.

Speaker 1 (47:40):
Up because this is a positivity this is a positivity
optimism podcast.

Speaker 3 (47:45):
Well, if we win this game, I'll be very happy.
SAME's I'm very happy.

Speaker 2 (47:52):
I don't know about you, keV. I understand that.

Speaker 1 (47:54):
From the player's perspective, we always hey, you got to
move on once the game's over and the next game
is your neck. From a fans perspective, this Minnesota game
has gotten to be a pretty crucial game in the UH,
in the morale UH department for this season for the

(48:14):
Iowa fan base, because I think everybody expects us to lose,
at least on paper for sure, in the horseshoe, not
next week, I guess because we get a buy two
weeks from now.

Speaker 2 (48:27):
Not saying we can't win that game.

Speaker 1 (48:29):
We've been on teams that won games that were equal odds,
but you play the numbers on that. So if this
weekend goes poorly and we enter a bye week at
two and two with Ohio State and a top five
team at their place next on the schedule.

Speaker 4 (48:47):
It's gonna get depressing in the eye.

Speaker 1 (48:48):
I'm gonna get there's just take the everybody put your
knives in storage. All the sharp objects in Iowa City
need to just be locked up. It could get it
could get bad.

Speaker 3 (49:02):
But another thing, I also think it's way too warm
for this game. This game used to be cold weather,
used to be November, used to be freezing temperatures, people
wearing like surf suits to stay stay warm, surf suits.
Now it's September, it's beautiful weather.

Speaker 1 (49:16):
What happened, I agree, happened to tradition in this I
think you at least need like a cool November chill
to this.

Speaker 3 (49:22):
Did you guys not always play it in like late
October early November.

Speaker 2 (49:26):
It's definitely a back half of the year.

Speaker 4 (49:28):
Usually, Yeah, but actually that year that we got our
ass kicked, I think it was like middle of October.

Speaker 1 (49:34):
It was like game five.

Speaker 4 (49:35):
Yeah, it was towards the middle of the season.

Speaker 1 (49:38):
Yeah, don't love that.

Speaker 4 (49:40):
Maybe maybe late October. But it was actually freezing because
it was wet and windy.

Speaker 1 (49:45):
It was bad. It was a bad temperature.

Speaker 4 (49:46):
It was honestly the most miserable I've ever been on
a football field.

Speaker 1 (49:50):
Really, yeah. Yeah.

Speaker 4 (49:51):
It was just like we lost fifty six to fourteen,
and I'm I wasn't even playing that year, so I'm
just on the sideline, just like watching us get our
ass kicked, and I'm cold, and I'm say, yeah, probably water.

Speaker 1 (50:03):
Probably this zero fun, sir, Probably the second most miserable
I've ever been, Kevin, all I do is we we
no matter what.

Speaker 4 (50:17):
Every not the best transition. That's a weird transition, right there?

Speaker 3 (50:22):
Were you were? Are you implying that this is the
most miserable you've ever been? Is the Awards winner segment?

Speaker 5 (50:28):
No?

Speaker 1 (50:28):
No, the most miserable I've ever been was twenty ten Marshalltown.
Because of a technicality from two other teams that didn't matter,
we somehow snuck in as the thirty second seed of
the playoffs at three and six, and we played eventual
state champion Dalling Catholic in the first round. And in

(50:49):
that first round game where future star receiver and NFL
receiver Amara Darboh he would take the first play from
scrimmage eighty yards for a touchdown on a corner that
shouldn't have been on a middle school team, little on
our high school team. And not to mention, this night
was thirty three degrees and sleeting rain. So that was

(51:09):
a bad thing.

Speaker 4 (51:10):
That's fair.

Speaker 1 (51:10):
And I was a starting middle linebacker for a defense
that gave up sixty seven points. So it is what
it is. That was the first worst.

Speaker 3 (51:18):
I'm glad you weren't dissing Awards Winners because I like
this segment.

Speaker 2 (51:21):
No, I love this segment. Actually, what I was going
to say was every time I hear.

Speaker 1 (51:23):
That little bit that I I mean, just is the
most caveman edit of all time that I did like
six five years ago, it puts a smile on my
face because it's just so us.

Speaker 4 (51:34):
We can't change it now.

Speaker 1 (51:35):
Offense, Oh no, it's not going anywhere, and I'm not
redoing it at all.

Speaker 2 (51:39):
So Awards Winners, I'll kick it off.

Speaker 1 (51:42):
Oh shoot, okay, Grant said he has like forty six
picks to me. I'm going right to Nebrunoi okay, And
I'm pretty sure the Huskers burned me a couple of
years ago. I said I'd never bet on them again.
But I kind of think they're gonna win by more Nate.

Speaker 3 (51:59):
What I think do you have?

Speaker 1 (52:00):
Because I see I see minus eight okay, over under
forty three, which is actually low, it's pretty low. I
think they're gonna win by more Nate.

Speaker 3 (52:12):
It was ten, so I think compared to the opener,
you're getting a good number.

Speaker 1 (52:15):
Yeah, I'm gonna take the Huskers. I hate I hate it.

Speaker 3 (52:19):
Really it was pretty high.

Speaker 1 (52:21):
Yeah, so Nebraska minus eight for me. I'm gonna then
go to James Madison. They're gonna be at North Carolina
this week, and as we've talked about this is Dukes
at Jason Podcast. James Madison covered for me earlier in
the season, and I'm gonna take him again. I'm gonna
take him plus ten and a half against the tar Heels. Uh.

(52:41):
And then my final game, where was it?

Speaker 3 (52:46):
Clearly love this pick. You gotta gotta go back and
remember it.

Speaker 1 (52:49):
What pick the one you're about to do.

Speaker 2 (52:52):
Oh yeah, I was.

Speaker 1 (52:53):
Oh, clearly spin on his mind a lot.

Speaker 2 (52:55):
He's loved much that he No, we're going big ten.
It's purple on purple.

Speaker 1 (53:01):
Northwestern makes its first trip out to the West coast.
They're going to take on the Washington Huskies in the
Pacific Northwest. And you know it's a ten and a
half point line as well, and I'm gonna take the
dog in that one. I'm gonna take the Northwestern Wildcats
to cover ten and a half. So those are my
three picks of the week. Wow, go ahead, it's about okay.

Speaker 3 (53:22):
I'm just gonna rattle some of these off because I
just I'm gonna just unload the clip because we've been struggling.
So that's what We're just gonna go all out. USF
plus six and a half versus Miami. They're host in Miami.
I just feel like that's weird. I'm taking USF. And
remember they recently like they got allegedly blown out by Alabama.
That was a one point game fourth quarter. People forget.
I like USF. And then today is James Gandolfini's birthday.

(53:46):
He would turn sixty three to day rest in peace
to James Gandolfini, the actor who played Tony Sopranos, who
were going to take Rutgers plus three and a half
as they head to Virginia Tech this weekend. Kansas plus
two and a half versus West Virginia Love Love Love
Love BYU plus six and a half versus Kansas State.
Kansas State's kind of got a weird spot. I think

(54:07):
they got Oklahoma State next after this. It's a weird
time to go to BYU.

Speaker 1 (54:12):
I guys gonna have to shove a burritos. He might
have to.

Speaker 3 (54:16):
I think it's a bet this was not the not
the game to do that. Provo Utah beautiful this time
or people forget. So I'm going to take BYU plus
six and a half. LSU mis twenty four u CLA
is awful, and I just think they're gonna try and
run up Western Kentucky plus two and a half. They
have the custom big red position helmets this weekend.

Speaker 1 (54:36):
Oh yeah, take them by a million.

Speaker 3 (54:37):
Though I'm taking Western Kentucky plus two and a half.
I don't care if Toledo beat Mississippi State by one
thousand last weekend. I'm still taking Western Kentucky u L
plus three and then I'm taking Oklahoma State plus two
against Utah and that's all that.

Speaker 1 (54:52):
Oh, that's it.

Speaker 3 (54:54):
Yeah, you said forty nine. I didn't stay fo. You
gave out three.

Speaker 1 (54:59):
I gave out three every week. It's a standard. Kevin,
your your segment, your picks, give it to us.

Speaker 4 (55:04):
Uh. I'm gonna go to that Friday night game, that
Illinois and Nebraska game. I do think it's gonna be
one of the better games of the week. I like
the under in that game at forty three. I think
it's gonna be a low scoring affair. Yeah, under is
gonna be tough for a cover. I think I think
you got two pretty good defenses there, especially with Illinois
liking to run the ball. This is gonna be the

(55:28):
best defense that a freshman quarterback has seen yet.

Speaker 1 (55:30):
So sure, that's gonna be one hell of a Big
ten matchup. If it goes under forty three, it's gonna
beautiful football.

Speaker 4 (55:36):
I think it's gonna be a great game and I'm
excited to watch it. And it's gonna go under forty three,
And that's what that's what we got. We're gonna go
Tennessee minus seven at Oklahoma I think Tennessee is a
legitimate national championship contender, so they are. I think they
are gonna put their.

Speaker 1 (55:54):
On college football then joshe they're just gonna dick stamp
college football. They're gonna be like, hey, we're here, We're here, okay,
love that. Uh, and then we're gonna go to Oh,
you know, I like that. Rutgers plus three and a half,

(56:14):
I really do. Yeah, James Kanholfie, it's his birthday. Yeah,
of course.

Speaker 4 (56:22):
I think Rutger's got a pre silt squad this year.
And I think, uh, you know, getting three with the hook.

Speaker 1 (56:31):
I like that.

Speaker 4 (56:32):
Take them all.

Speaker 1 (56:33):
Right. Well, there you go. Preview episode of the Floyda
Rosdale matchup opener in the Big ten.

Speaker 2 (56:41):
To watch the Palcons Low Energy podcast tonight.

Speaker 1 (56:44):
Kevin's gonna fall asleep immediately after this, and I think
we're all just kind of it's building. It's building, night game,
night game. It's gonna be juice, there's gonna be electricity.
We need the boys to come home with the pig,
bring it home. Thank you guys. Oh that was fantastic.
We'll talk to you guys tomorrow with the five ten
five show. And then we'll recap this weekend's game on Monday.

(57:07):
