But worried or not, the preliminaries areover and the tournament is here.
And Atty has told Volke in no uncertainterms that she expects him to win the

(00:47):
apprentice level competition andspecifically to beat Zaxis But before we
get on to the tourney, let's take a lookat a piece of advice from the series.
Step 15 on the Pillar of Ruma saysoptimism.
Without it,
We lose ourselves to misery.
And with that, let's join Eric and Scottfor chapters 31 through 35 of Colosseum

(01:08):

(01:49):
So you can hop over there to join in onthe conversation and want to make an
announcement that.
Crown Tournament 2 by Shami Stovall andRyan Tang.
The second in that series is going to bereleased on May the 8th of 2024.
So the date this episode is released,it'll be two weeks from that date.

(02:10):
And without further ado, we're going toget into Chapter 31 Tournament Round 1.
All right.
It is tourney day.
Finally starting the Pokemon LeagueChampionship.
So Volke actually took the challenge fromZelfree pretty to the heart and is getting
information on his own about hisopponents.

(02:30):
He brings along the book that he borrowedfrom the college that Theasin wrote They
also say that the Coliseum seats about 24,000 people in general.
And just for some perspective on the sizeof this Coliseum and by no means calling
it small, but the largest stadium is inMichigan, the Michigan Wolverines.

(02:51):
And it can seat 107 ,601 fans.
And I've seen the Michigan stadium, even aquarter of that size is still a massive
stadium.
Exactly.
I couldn't imagine like seeing that huge,even at 24 ,000.
And the stadium is also fitted for thegames.

(03:11):
So they brought in a gargoyle arcaneistwho's able to reform the arena after it
gets blown to pieces during the matches.
They have caladrius arcanists there toheal anybody who's injured.
They have enkanto arcanists who are ableto put up a telekinetic barrier to protect
the crowd from any stray magic or weaponrythat comes away.

(03:34):
So it is fully designed and ready for thetourney.
Oh, come on.
I want to catch a hockey puck.
Except when the hockey puck's a fireball.
This is true.
Volke and Luthair are underneath andNicholin actually mentions that it's been
a while since they've seen Luthair.
Nicholin does ask if Volke swept anyoneoff their feet and Luthair be loyal as

(03:59):
heck.
Talking about Karna, the Gala, Luthairbeing the gentleman that he is, says that
a man does not kiss and tell.
Nicholin just straight claps back with, well, Luthair is not a man.
He's a sentient clothing.
Which is the best description for him.
I like that you can have.
There's really no other way to put it.

(04:20):
So, I mean, kudos to Nicholin for that.
Yeah, he's like Dr.
Strange's cape out there.
He's...
sentient clothing.
So, Volke and Zaxis they get to start offwith the puppy arcanist that we met
earlier on in the book.
As they're announcing the tournamentbracket, Volke does notice that Adelgis'

(04:40):
brother Niro is also listed.
He's fighting and here is a stoor wormArcanist.
So more to come with more interaction ontheir family.
Well, another one of the rules as far asthe apprenticeship levels go is that the
Arcanist are only allowed to use whateveritems they specifically have made.
This comes, makes it a very difficultchoice or decision I would imagine for the

(05:04):
rule keeper because technically.
Volke didn't make his sword.
Zelfree getting ahead of the curve wasalready looking into that.
And especially with Volke being secondbonded, they did allow the sword because
of the fact that Luthair helped withactually making the sword.
So it's not necessarily a holy out of thequestion for Volke to keep onto it.

(05:24):
And that means he also gets to have hismirror shield.
Volke still doesn't have his pendant, which it seems like it was going to be a
problem, but then Zelfree's like, yeahbro, he's with me.
He really showed his power there.
Right, just, he's with me, you know, like,I got him.
He's my apprentice, they lose shit.

(05:44):
Next time we'll have to tie it onto him, make him carry a string.
We find out that the Unicorn, Pegasi, andthe Sovereign Dragon Trials of Worth will
be conducted during this, uh, thistournament as well.
This is going to be basically for theUnicorn and the Pegasi at least, this is
going to be the new batch of recruits forthe Sky Legionnaires and the Knights

(06:06):
Draconic And it is fun because their Trialof Worths are physical challenges.
So it is something where they can have itin the arena.
You can really, people can come view it assort of a side event to the tourney
Exactly.
At least in my head Canon, I alwaysthought about how like these trials are
worth their, they're almost mystical.
Like you don't know what it's going to beuntil you get there to compete against

(06:30):
them.
And granted, I don't know why I got thisin my head Canon because literally in the
first book, the first couple of chapterswere like, yeah, we know exactly what's
going to happen.
So I don't know.
I always felt like these are, they're likemystical.
Yeah.
It does seem strange that it's almostsomething you could train for.
Like they're, it's their version of anIron Man or a marathon.

(06:52):
Right.
Like if I could practice to become awizard, this is how I'm going to do it
until I have to actually go.
It was Zaxis and Volke.
They do bring a level of conviction thatis basically like at the same level as
they were when they were confrontingCallisto because.
We don't like these puppy arcanists atall.
They are feisty.

(07:13):
They get in their face.
They were making fun of Karna.
The whole incident with the Frith Guildgetting called out, they are anxious for
revenge at this point.
Calling Hexa a a skag and all that.
Like, mm -mm.
You don't be doing us like that.
My other thing is, what does Zaxis have inthis phat pouch that he has?
It's literally listed as a phat pouch onhis belt.

(07:35):
What is it?
Really hoping it's not actually fat inthere.
He was practicing his magic tricks withhis fire.
So hopefully it's fire related and not asnack for after Like his snack pouch that
he had when he was doing Yeah, he tuckedin a little hard tack in there and partway
through he'll break it break it out Hey,what if it's Scooby snacks?

(07:59):
It's gonna be tough to fight after Scoobysnacks.
That's all I'm saying
This whole chapter of round one actuallyjust is the lead up to the tournament or
the actual round itself.
This leads us into chapter 32, a messagethat actually starts by demanding that
Volke handles the orthoros.

(08:19):
And it's like, wait a minute.
I thought we were a team here, not just,Hey, you're going to listen to orders or
whatever.
I guess it doesn't really matter.
So Volke is a one man army anyways.
He's the main character.
Like, come on Volke.
starts to have it like he has a strategyready to go.
He looked up all the weaknesses of these, these two.
He knows exactly what he's going to needto do to beat them.

(08:44):
So maybe he won't need it.
Who knows?
So they get into the ring and basicallyround one starts is massively pathetic
against the Huntsman Guild.
Like Volke and Zaxis just obliterate them.
It took.
29 seconds to win this fight.

(09:05):
And they didn't even have to draw swords.
Like Volke didn't even really need hissword.
No, and this goes back to exactly whatZelfree was saying where the apprentices
don't have the skill that the Frith Guildhas.
They haven't been involved in missions inthe same way.
And you can tell they're not on anywherenear the same tier as the Frith Guild

(09:25):
After this fight is over and again in 29seconds, like just boom, done.
Volke has Luthair take a message and aflower to Lyvia that's up in the box.
I thought this is just sweet of him.
Like, good for Volke for thinking aboutthis.
Like feeling, feeling like Knight's Tale,of course, because it's Zaxis.

(09:48):
This win goes straight to his head.
Like immediately he thinks he's the bestshit since sliced bread.
He's defended Illia's honor in all matterof less than 30 seconds.
He is back on his high horse and I'm notsure he ever got off of it.
So Lyell comes over and meets up and Lyellbasically acts like he's a knight.

(10:10):
Delusions of grandeur just run in thisfamily.
Everybody, everybody has the highest self-esteem.
And this is all because his friend Corywas down on his luck.
He's moonlighting by taking some odd jobsfrom a pub in the moonlight district
called the Red Pot And we find out that
He was actually hired not to stealanything during the gala, but just to go

(10:33):
in and get a layout of the castle.
So you get the feeling that he is a pawnin this broader plan.
Volke and Lyell go over to this Red Potthis pub basically.
Volke isn't getting any answers out of theinnkeeper and he's getting kind of like
upset about the Volke's getting kind oftired of this.
He wants answers.
Doesn't have time to play games anymore.

(10:54):
He's got a tournament to win.
He's got the lovely princess to win over.
He's supposed to be training Atty where atthis point he's like trying to figure out
which fish he wants from the sea.
Like he's got options here.
Let's be honest.
He really does.
He found himself into a few very, very oddsituations that he has benefited from.

(11:14):
I mean, shoot, he could probably even, Idon't know, maybe be with Karna even.
Like she was digging him pretty good.
He was honorable and it was nice at least.
She didn't kill him, which was what shewas planning on doing.
So that's a win.
Or frame him for stealing something.
I mean, yeah, he's, he's pretty good inher book.

(11:34):
Yeah, exactly.
Volke is not getting the answers he'swanting out of this bartender, the Red
Pot.
He basically just tells Luthair to comeover here.
I can't remember his exact verbiage, but Ithink it was to me and Luthair just kind
of pops up out of the shadows andeverybody's like, oh shit, the Steel Thorn
Inquisitors are looking around.
Like we better give them some actualanswers now.

(11:56):
Volke does get his answers he is lookingfor.
There's been a shady guy coming in, givingpeople odd jobs, paying them no questions
asked.
A little bit of information from everybodyto get all the whole picture for.
And this whole time, Lyell is standingnext to Volke.
And he's probably like, oh my God, I ambesties with the Inquisitor.

(12:16):
You guys better respect me and get me somefree drinks.
He's taking full advantage of this.
So yeah, like you said, the illusions ofgrandeur must run in the family.
In chapter 33, true forms.
Now, Zaxis decides that he wants tostrategize.
Even though the last few days he's justkind of like disappeared with Illia Maybe

(12:38):
he decided it's not going to be just easynext time.
I don't know.
His, his accountability is a little off.
He's very much upset with Volke when he'sjust as much to blame for.
their lack of preparation.
It works out for him the first round.
Good for them.
But the fact that Zaxis is just like, well, you need to like, whoa, whoa, whoa,

(12:58):
whoa, whoa.
Like, don't get me wrong.
A few weeks ago, you were all overtraining and all good this, that, the
other.
Cool.
But what, like, what now you, you're allof a sudden you're dating with Illia and
you just can't be, uh, can't be foundanywhere.
What the heck?
And these fights are only going to getharder as teams win and.
You never know what the matchup could be.

(13:19):
It could be something that is notfavorable for, for them.
But remember, Zaxis is going to win thistournament for Illia to show that he's
better than Volke Zaxis is starting tothrow his relationship with Illia into
Volke's face.
Like, Volke has a problem with this, whichhe clearly doesn't.
And then the slightest quip, Zaxis islike, just deal with it, okay.

(13:42):
Like angsty teenagers.
So Illia and Hexa get ready to fight.
They're coming up against a SalamanderArcanist and a Ogopogo Arcanist, which is
basically Canada's version of the LochNess Monster.
Guess they weren't cool enough to havetheir own, but I guess it is what it is.
Sorry other people don't listen in Canada.
I guess, I guess Scott, you're pretty muchon the border there anyways.

(14:04):
We're close.
We, I can go south to Canada, which is anodd one for people.
I always wondered if, uh.
Vercingetorix grew bored of having to justsit there and roar to announce the
beginning of each fight.
It's like, I bet it wouldn't be thatexciting for him.
There's a lot of fights too.
There's not just the apprenticetournament, but they have the journeyman

(14:25):
tournament, the master class.
Like there's a lot of fights going on thathe's got to roar for.
He'll probably figure five minutes betweenbouts at most, and then another five
minutes to clean it up.
So like every 10 minutes he's just going, roar.
It would be so frustrating if you weren'tactually watching the tournament and it
just like you're, you're keeping your shopand just huge siren goes off every 10

(14:50):
minutes.
You work the night shift and you're tryingto sleep during the day and every 10
minutes he's roaring.
Like, God dang it.
So Illia pretty much carries the team inthis round, basically with Raisen
Unfortunately, Hexa is not too much of acontender in this point, but I guess it is
what it is.
And after they're about.
Volke's kind of chilling back in the hoteland he realizes that he doesn't really

(15:15):
need to have a flashlight to read hisbooks in the dark anymore.
He can sit up and stay awake all nightreading his books and nobody's going to
know any better.
That passive ability really just makes hima better student.
Yeah, exactly.
He can read later.
So he is up reading about true forms andhe's trying to get a better idea of like
what they are, how they work kind ofthing.

(15:35):
One thing that he does discover is thatwhat...
One thing would work for one Griffinarcanist to attain true form may actually
not work for another Griffin arcanist.
Just because somebody's reached their trueform with their eldrin doesn't mean that
that's the exact way it has to be done.
Granted, some of the mystical creatures, they have specific criteria that have to

(15:57):
be met.
Like I believe with manticores, it'sbasically just got to feed them enough
eyeballs from kids.
Cause why not?
But if you do it enough, they get.
They get their true form.
So some of them have, have that specificcriteria, but some of them are vague.

(16:18):
Like you're achieving a certain virtue tothe extent, like with a guild master
Eventide actually with a Gentle noteverything is going to be the exact same
for each eldrin And even it can take avery long time to exemplify the virtues.
Most true forms are made from older pairs.
Those that already exemplify the virtueupon bonding.
can actually achieve true form immediatelyfrom bonding.

(16:41):
So that'd be pretty dang cool to not onlyone bond with a mystical creature, but the
second you bond with that mysticalcreature, you get a true form.
Like, that'd be heckin' cool.
That's how you know it's the perfect fitfor you.
Exactly.
Yep.
And with true forms, they can actuallyheal themselves for magical damage as

(17:02):
well.
And they cannot be tainted or corrupted bythe arcanist plague.
And they do also move up half of the tierin Theasins book.
So all their magic is just a little bitstronger.
They are just a little bit tougher andmore able than their non true form
counterparts.
So as Volke keeps reading, he finds thedread form front in Theasins book.

(17:26):
And basically dread form is that of.
A beast that has changed form due tomagical corruption of the arcanist plague.
And I think we see this in some of theprevious books with the gargoyle who
mentions that he is a true embodiment ofmagic.
And I think there was some confusionbecause Volke says, obviously this isn't a
true form, but it is what Thyssen iscalling the dread form.

(17:49):
Kind of the pendulum swinging in thecomplete opposite direction.
As he's reading, somebody knocks on thedoor, he goes over and lo and behold is
Atty and -
I bet Volke is just over the moon thatAtty decided to come over and visit him.
Probably hasn't seen her much lately, especially after the gala.
Volke gives Atty the book about true formsbecause he remembers her talking about
wanting the true form or trying to achieveit.

(18:11):
So figure any kind of informationadditionally that she can have.
to help her and Titania reach true form.
Volke actually was like, wait a minute, you came and knocked on my door.
What did you need from me?
And she wants to train with him a littlebit more, but ultimately she is there to
inform Volke that the GrandmasterInquisitor is calling on him.
That leads into chapter 34, theGrandmaster Inquisitor.

(18:35):
So as Atty is taking Volke to theGrandmaster, she does compliment him on
his -
growth and they do agree that they shouldspend more time together in the future.
Good job Volke for taking your own advice.
Given Zaxis's all this good advice withIllia, here we go.
He's finally - So Volke goes down to meetthe Grandmaster and the Grandmaster, as to

(18:57):
be expected, is a Knightmare Arcanist andis merged with his armor.
The Grandmaster is a full suit, so fullyformed, and Luthair does go and bow to
him.
He doesn't know the Grandmaster from histime with Mathis, so bows to show respect.
And even the Grandmaster was happy to seeLuthair for sure.
He was kind of confused as to why Luthairnever came back to the Steel Thorn

(19:22):
Inquisitors.
Luthair was too ashamed after failing toreturn back to the Steel Thorn
Inquisitors.
I think the Grandmaster kind of understoodthat.
And the Grandmaster gives a littlebackground once they've had their
introductions of why he's there.
And he does ask him Volke to go on amission.
to root out the plague in the mines thatwe heard about earlier.

(19:42):
And as he's given some details, he doeslet Volke know that there are fewer than
12 Knightmare Arcanists in the world.
So it is a very small and almost elitegroup of Arcanists to be a part of.
So he takes a hold of Volke and he does amassive shadow step.
I love the way that they describe, it wasdescribed in the book.

(20:03):
He has this huge inky void for a caperather than the red line one.
And I wonder if this is something thatthey're alluding to, or there's just, this
is just the difference in the Knightmaresthemselves.
But Volke kind of like walks into the Capeand this is how he shadow steps.
And they're able to shadow step prettymuch out of the city.

(20:25):
They are outside the mines and they'reinformed that there's six night cat and
two Harpies.
in the mines that are plague -ridden andthat they're going to be responsible for
getting rid of.
Invokes experience based on previously histhought was, oh, we'll just kill the
Eldrin and then the Arcanist will behealed.
But he's informed that that's not reallythe case and they can't exactly do that

(20:49):
right now.
So the Arcanist that have carried theplague for longer than six months are
actually considered beyond saving at thispoint.
And I believe these are, these Arcaniushave been plagued written for 18 months to
20 months, I believe is what the timelinewas.
And it's not so much because of the plagueitself or spreading the plague.
It's, it's because of the actualalteration to their soul.

(21:13):
And it basically makes them justcompletely wicked and a lacking of empathy
as to why they're beyond saving.
Cause they're basically just going to walkaround and don't care what they do
anymore.
Which makes them extremely dangerous.
And my question on this is how does heknow how long they've had the plague from?
Is there, you know, can he tell based ondisfigurations or there's some way that

(21:34):
he's able to tell?
I mean, I imagine he's got spiessomewhere, but I mean, that's a good
point.
He's, he's got a way.
He's, he's a grand master.
So exactly that brings us to chapter 35,the eclipse aura.
So the Inquisitor always stages.
merged and this is something that Volkeasked that they're about and even that

(21:55):
there has never seen them separated.
So they are always acting, living anddying as one.
We do meet Lucian who is also a KnightmareArcanist.
And his Knightmare's name is Azir and hewas born from the murder of Emperor Raiz R
-A -I -Z.
So he's very excited to meet anotherKnightmare Arcanist and kind of get to see

(22:18):
all of them in action and
Maybe learn a few tips and tricks.
And the first one that he sees right awayis the Grandmaster uses an Eclipse Aura,
which blackens out everything.
There's a huge bubble of darkness and allthe Knightmares in the area are empowered.
So previously where he had shadowtendrils, those now have chains and hooks.

(22:42):
The Harpies and the night cats come out ofthe mines and the terrors knock the
Harpies out of the air.
So they're
much much stronger and Volke also noticesthat when the aura is in effect he doesn't
have any second bonding pain so all aroundyou know there's a few different
Knightmare Arcanist in the area andthey're all benefiting from this Eclipse

(23:03):
aura.
They really quickly get rid of everyonethey're able to use their tendrils and not
ever get into a point where they're reallyrisking getting the plague so it's one of
the other benefits that they have of
tendrils, the chains, the hooks, it's allable to be done at a distance.
And the Grand Master...
It's extremely smart.

(23:23):
And the Grand Master does preach about theimportance of the aura for Knightmares for
this reason.
And he actually offers Volke to join theSteel Thorn Inquisitors and become his
apprentice rather than Zelfree Volke hasmixed feelings about this and ends up
turning it down.
And Lucian...
is extremely angry at him for it.

(23:44):
Well, I think Lucian is as upset as he isbecause I feel like Lucian had to prove
that he belongs with the Steel ThornInquisitors, whether that be like Lucian
has to bond with the Knightmare I don'tknow if they find Knightmares and kind of
keep them at least with them so that whenthey do find somebody that would be worthy
of bonding with a Knightmare.

(24:06):
I don't know.
I wonder if that's what...
the guild's trial worth would be, butagain, Lucian's mad because he probably
had to go through this intense trial.
Volke's just being offered this and, andLucian kind of like acts like a, like a
straight child.
He says to Volke that Volke is such achild to squander such the opportunity and
everyone else had to prove themselves tojoin the guild.

(24:28):
But yet he gets special treatment.
And I think that the Grandmaster actuallydoes a good job with this, not because he
doesn't get upset or anything like that, but he.
Basically he's like, well, when you getdone with whatever it is you're doing with
the frith guild, your offer still remains.
It lets you train under me.
So don't think this is one time only deal.
And I think the grand master almost hasrespect for the frith guild.

(24:51):
So he understands if there's somethingthat they are handling that Volke believes
is more important.
It probably is something that is veryimportant.
You know, this frith guild is very wellknown, so it is quite possible that he
just respects the guild as a whole.
wraps up this session.
So move on to the bestiary.
The first one we're going to go through isthe Orthrus.

(25:12):
And this is one of the puppies that Volkewas fighting in the arena.
And their magic is really physicalstrength and nothing else.
So they're gained extra endurance.
They don't need very much sleep.
It's tier two, so it's a slightly lowertier.
And their trial worth really comes fromdefending animals.

(25:33):
So it is another.
physical strength based one that you couldalmost train for, at least knowing, hey,
I'm going to have to protect animals.
So you have an idea of what's coming.
Their reproduction is progeny based, explicitly mentioned near red cattle.
So it sounds like that is their animal ofchoice to defend.

(25:54):
And we don't know much about theirevocation, their manipulation, but their
augmentation again is physical strengthrelated, extra strength, extra endurance.
And their passive ability is pretty cool.
They're actually immune to mind affectingpowers.
And we do get some insight into their trueform.
It's called the virtue true form and it'sobtained by our Arcanist who exemplify

(26:19):
fealty and their puppy becomes a bipedaland muscular much like the Minotaur and
it's capable of brute strength far beyondits size.
There's a Barghest He is a tier twomystical creature.
It has an entropic touch that kills thematter and how that can cause deafness.
The order it gets it's child worth isfinding something that's lost.

randomly lost?

challenge the person to go and find it.

Obviously like they they need to knowwhat's lost.
They need to know that something is lostThey're just they're just out there like

(27:03):

rock.
It was lost the reproduction is fable Theyare born from mutilated bodies buried in
mountaintops Pretty solid there Theirevocation manipulation augmentation

(27:23):
Their evocation is that they can impacthearing due to their howls impacting
deafness and their manipulation would beat the entropy.
We don't know pretty much anything elseabout it as far as passive abilities or
oragos.
And we, but we do know that it does have atrue form, which is a virtue.

(27:45):
And it is, it turns into a dog made out ofdead parts of other dogs.
And it's often the size of a horse, perhaps larger.
And it's capable of foretelling the likelydeath of an individual by touching them.
And this is typically obtained byArcanists who revel in the death of lesser
creatures.
So psychopaths.
Not pretty.
