While Illia purchases a new dress for thegala, Volke wanders the Moonlight District
and meets Karna, an exotic dancer whoconvinces him to bring her to the gala as
his date.
Volke intends to attend the gala dressedin his slightly shabby street clothes, but

Illia rescues him from himself by orderinghim clothes from the dressmaker as well.
Returning to the inn, Master Zelfreedoesn't allow Volke to rest and instead
has him leave on an urgent errand to seeAdelgis's father.
But before we get into the book, let'slook at a piece of advice from the series.

And today we'll be diving into chapters 26through 30 of the Coliseum Arcanist book.

And with that, we'll get into chapter 26.
Chapter 26 is Theasin Venover, theartificer of Elios.
Adelgis, Volke, and Zelfree are going tomeet Theasin.
Volke is very troubled by Fain's commentsabout Zelfree and trying to figure out on
his own whether to believe Fain Does hebelieve Zelfree?
(02:39):
Is there any truth to these?
So he's struggling internally and rightnext to them.
Adelgis is also struggling internally andhe's worried more because he's able to
hear thoughts now and What is he gonnahear from his dad?
And if Theasin was my dad, I'd be scaredof hearing that as well Yeah, I don't
(03:01):
think I'd wanna know Some things arebetter left untouched so they arrived the
artificier building
It's very clean except for a pile of trashin the corner.
And as we talked about a few chapters ago,Theasin's Eldrin is a trash dragon.
(03:23):
So I would have to guess that the trash ishis trash dragon.
Theasin comes out and Zelfree gets into ashouting match with him, confronts him,
and Theasin ends up agreeing to remove theleech.
He says that it needs to bond shortlyafter being removed.
As this discussion is going on, heactually offers for Zelfree to join him,
(03:45):
which Zelfree is very, very opposed todoing.
The pile of trash does turn out to be thetrash truck.
And I can only, only imagine how awful itsounds when it moves because it is a bunch
of scraping and scratching.
Has to be awful.
Not at this moment, but we do find outkind of shortly in the near future that it
(04:07):
can actually speak.
It actually communicates.
via telepathy, which is very cool andunique for dragons.
Especially it's like Eldrins in general,because everybody's Eldrins talks.
Yeah, it's very, very rare to see.
So very cool, very interesting.
Zelfree ends up storming out of the labwhile they're waiting.
(04:31):
Adelgis is okay.
Felicity is communicating.
One of the few other Eldrins that cancommunicate through thoughts.
She's in touch with Adelgis.
She finds out that Adelgis is okay.
The leech was removed.
I just want to talk about how absolutelycold Theasin is towards his own son.
Like, no hug, no, oh my gosh, I haven'tseen you in forever.
(04:54):
Like, what's going on?
No, oh, your leech is ready to come out.
Let me go get that taken care of for you.
And shoot, he's more concerned aboutgetting the leech out of his own son than
he is about his own son.
Like, he'll be fine.
He says, I have one leech, but I've gotlike three sons.
It's savage.
That really is, but that's almost hismindset is that like, I can't afford to

lose the leech because there won't beanother one, but the leech is removed, but
Thiesin isn't back, Adelgis isn't back,they're still in the back room.
I'm assuming going through post-opprocedures.
Volke is wandering around the lab and endsup seeing few documents in the lab about
creating artifacts.
And one of those is actually a letter
the librarian who is telling Theasin thatEventide came back to talk about the
(05:43):
runestones and was wondering if they couldactually be recreated.
And Theasin says there's not really enoughmagic or enough knowledge to be able to do
this.
Theasin finally returns with the leech andtalks with Volke about how important it
is.
They are actually able to manipulate magicand the plague is a manipulation of magic.
(06:03):
So the leech is a possible cure for theplague.
Which is more important than what Gillie'sdoing because Gillie is really treating
the symptom with the trinkets.
You know, they can't be truly massproduced because they require star shards
and the Wendigo horns.
But if the leech can cure the plague, thenthat would solve the problem for everyone.
(06:26):
He also almost like treats her as if she'sway beneath him, which that's just him in
general.
So.
Not surprised there.
How dare you even compare me to her, speakabout her and me in the same sense, you
know, trying to compare us.
Very high and mighty.
Yeah.
Theasin as part of his, his magic with hisEldrin, he can sense the type and power of
(06:51):
artifacts and he can actually sense theshield.
He doesn't quite know what it's made from,but he can tell that it's poorly made.
Not surprising since Volke had never madean artifact before.
He thinks that he could help.
Volke fix it and make it a whole lotstronger.
Even when he's like, Oh, this is so poorlymade.
And Volke's like, yeah, that was my firstthing I made.
(07:14):
He's like, no, it wasn't like there's noway you definitely did not.
Like bullshit.
He called him.
It looks like I did it.
What do you want?
Volke was just like, you know what?
You're not worth my effort of trying toargue about it.
So just whatever.
Finally, finally Adelgis comes out of theback room.
(07:34):
He's practically falling down the stairs,not in good shape.
When, and he does try to like straightenup and show that he's not limping or hurt
at least in front of his father.
But like, first off, there's no post-op.
You tell me that there's no meds.
Like, are they just this bad ass that theycould just go into surgery, have a leech
(07:54):
removed and not be like struggling reallybadly afterwards?
I mean, he is, but like nobody's like, oh,here's some.
healing magic or potion or tonic orwhatever to help you out and recover a
little itsy bit.
No.
Yeah, this thing was attached to yourorgans.
(08:15):
It's not like on top of your skin.
They had to cut in to cut it out.
It is major surgery.
Give the guy something.
A couple Tylenol at least.
Cures everything.
Don't forget to hydrate.
(08:35):
Hydration was the most important part.
Tea.
Tea's great.
That brings us to chapter 27, and thisinvolves them still in the lab and making
their way out.
And again, Adelgis is very, very concernedthat his dad will harp on him for not
standing up straight and walking right, sohe's really doing his best to hold it
(08:58):
together, but he pretty much needs to becarried by Volke out.
His brother Nero walks in, and one thingthat Volke notices is that his arcanist
mark on his forehead isn't
super defined yet, which means that it'snewly bound.
So whatever his Eldrin is and Volkedoesn't recognize it, it is a very recent
(09:20):
connection.
Volke and Zelfree end up taking Adelgisback to the inn.
He's slowly getting worse and worse.
They decide to take him to the university.
Gillie's there and there's a lot betterresources.
So they're hoping that they could findsome way to help him out.
We're given instructions by Zelfree beforehe left Theasin's artificial place of,
(09:45):
don't leave without me.
And here we are.
Like Zelfree got, got back and wasprobably like, you son of a bitch.
Nobody listens.
Why does nobody listen?
Zelfree actually talks and explains alittle bit about what Abdelgis is
suffering from.
So one of the things is that when you bondwith an Eldrin.
(10:09):
it almost shares and lives off of yoursoul.
Your soul heals itself.
So as long as you're only bonded to one,there's no harm done.
And you kind of both benefit from therelationship.
But if you try to bond to a second one, itbecomes too much and it eats away on you
and you actually die because your soulgets eaten away.
(10:30):
And what Zelfree suspects happened is whenthe leech was going to be removed, the
leech was feeding off of Zelfree's soul.
It wasn't going to kill him because itneeded him to live, but when it started to
be cut out, it likely took a big bite.
And that's what Adelgis is suffering fromis this sudden loss of a lot more soul
than he likely can handle.
(10:52):
So Zaxis ends up showing up to try andheal Adelgis.
He's not able to do much.
And when he talks with Volke about
Everything he's really spending all hisfree time with Illia So that relationship
skyrocketed real quick.
Zaxis this is a Phoenix arcanist right?
He got them flames going real fast.
Hot and fast.
(11:14):
Atty shows up and she's talking with Volkeand says that she actually did learn how
to heal.
She spent some time alone in a room andwas able to figure it out.
She shows him by pricking his finger andthen healing him.
Like, okay, that's-
Fair enough.
You know, she knows that a little prickisn't going to be too dangerous for him.
So, but that was kind of cute that she's,I want to show Volke first and, and Volke
(11:38):
sitting here thinking like, oh gosh, likewe're, we're alone.
We're having this conversation.
And I can only imagine it clicking in, inhis brain of, Oh God, Fain's probably
following me.
And he just kind of talks out of nowhereto nobody just, Hey, um, I'd really like
some privacy here.
You're basically telling, telling Fain toGTFO.
(12:01):
is probably like, what the hell is goingon?
Things looks crazy.
It reminds me of a Harry Potter, thesecond, the second book, or is it, I guess
the movie more so.
You know, they're in Hagrids Hut and ifanybody needs answers, just follow the
spiders.
And everybody's sitting there like, whothe hell are you talking to?
(12:22):
No one Out there, you know
And next to show up is Hexa.
She ends up going to Volke andshortcutting everything and asking if he
will go to the gala with Atty because shedoesn't think Atty is going to ask.
And Volke tells her the truth and says,Hey, I met Karna who is from the Moonlight
District and she's amazing and she cansing and dance.
(12:45):
And I'm going to go to the gala with her.
And Hexa die, like just starts dying,laughing like you're bringing a whore to
this, to the gala.
And again, Volke is so, so naive that he'sprobably like, no, she's not.
She is a singer and a dancer and she's notlike that.
She is not a lady of the night.
(13:06):
Okay.
Poor Volke.
He's probably like, how do I keep endingit up in these situations?
Well, what one more girl that I got todeal with.
And that brings us to chapter 28, which isthe Queen's Gala.
(13:30):
And Volke is preparing to go and ends upcutting himself with the razor from
William.
Luckily he heals super quickly, so it'snot a big deal, but he does have this
sense of pride from using the razor andthinking of William.
Imagine him walking out of the hotel witha bunch of toilet paper stuck to his face.
(13:51):
I've shaved before.
Imagine Karna was like, Oh God, I can'tbelieve I have to go to this.
What did I do?
So luckily he heals.
Luckily, very luckily he heals.
Cause Karna does show up in the carriageand he mentions that it's his first date.
(14:11):
And we actually realized that the driveris the exact same person that lured Volke
into the show to begin with.
So it's a coincidence here.
Man of many talents.
I guess so.
I mean, maybe he's her personal bodyguard.
What's a beer belly?
They get to the gala and of course thepuppy arcanist that they were getting into
(14:36):
a fight with earlier there, and theirdates insult Karna, and Volke didn't
realize she was a lady of the night.
This is news to him, so he gets upset andhe's not even upset that she's a lady of
the night.
That's a-
her choice, but he's upset that allArcanists don't have these high moral
(14:59):
standards that he read about in all hisbooks, which I thought was funny because
he's dealt with pirates, someone createdthe plague, he knows quite a few people.
They're just not nice to Karna, and that'stheir failing trait.
But he is willing to risk his reputationfor her.
At first, Karna asked him if he wasembarrassed, and he said yes.
(15:23):
And she was totally expecting him beingembarrassed to her, but then he's
explaining how he's embarrassed about hispeers and they're acting like they were.
And maybe, maybe Volke was upset becausethe Arcanist that he's meeting at the gala
are, are not the pirates.
They're not the ones that are, that werecreating the plague.
So he, he had this expectation of, I wouldsay non questionable moral as the Arcanist
(15:48):
says, quote unquote bad guy.
So he just assumed that all Arcanists thatwere not bad.
held themselves to higher standards.
And that leads us into chapter 29, justiceor revenge.
Karna was so absolutely surprised thatVolke stood up for her the way he did.
She wanted him to dance with her.
(16:09):
And Volke feels kind of this magic in hertouch and does a double take on her
forehead just to make sure she doesn'thave an arcanist mark.
And no mark, but there's
definitely magic at work.
He's loses control of his body and he'smoving out of his own choice.
Red flag a little bit, but she takes himout on the dance floor and folks are just
(16:30):
like, look, I don't dance.
Like I got two left feet.
Like really I don't have any feet fordancing.
She takes the lead and they're justcrushing on the dance floor, doing the
doing the Dougie and the cha-cha slidehere.
And everybody stops what they're doing andstaring at them because of how just insane
that they're doing.
And it's a very fast-paced song.
(16:51):
Once the song gets over, Karna takes himsomewhere private upstairs and she kind
of, she leads him there knowing exactlywhere she's going with him.
And she finally reveals her Arcanist mark.
And she talks to Volke about it and saysthat she usually hides it because then she
gets to see people's true nature.
(17:11):
So people like the puppy Arcanist, sheunderstands right away that they aren't
living...
up to the highest standards because theywould treat somebody lesser than poorly,
you know, even regardless of whether sheis actually an Arcanist or not.
We do find out that she is a doppelgangerArcanist knowing how the high born, they
(17:32):
listening to ACOTAR lately.
So sorry.
Gotta re realign how things are called.
Um, the, the Arcanist, they're higherabove everybody else in Thronehold at
least.
treat those that are mortals like they'resecond class citizens.
And so it makes complete sense why Karnawants to do this and doesn't want people
(17:55):
knowing that she's an Arcanist when shefirst meets up.
She, she talks about justice and revengeand Volke is talks about how justice is
meant to right a wrong and revenge is tocause suffering, to write the wrong, but
then go further.
This is actually, he quotes the pillaragain.
(18:16):
So going back to his, to his home with thesteps on the pillar.
He's like, keep it up.
My day ones.
So she tells Volke that she really wantedto embarrass Volke and not necessarily
Volke personally, assuming that he wasgoing to be a pompous Arcanist.
She does this because she was embarrassedin front of others before, before when she
(18:37):
was immortal, she kind of explains why shedid what she did.
Then she takes control over Volke's bodyagain, after she touches him.
Again, she's a doppelganger Arcanist andyou know, she's meant to steal something
and blame it on Volke.
Was going to make it easy for herself byfighting this, um, you know, asshole
(18:57):
Arcanist to have him embarrass her.
And then she can go and steal somethingand blame it on that Arcanist.
And Volke is slowly realizing through thisconversation, she gets to the end of it.
And I just picture him going, wait.
I'm the Arcanist you were gonna hurt?
He should have picked up on that rightaway, but he's going along his merry way
(19:19):
until the end of it.
And then it's like, man, that would havebeen rough.
I like nodded along like, yeah, I mean,that makes sense.
And then he's just like, oh, wait.
She escapes and lets Volke go afterwards.
She does this like backflip thing off ofthe balcony.
into the gardens below, which was prettybadass in my opinion.
(19:43):
She's probably wearing heels or something,so I can't imagine the easiest of
plannings here, but you know, women thatdo that, you know, especially with all the
superhero movies and stuff like that, Iapplaud you for that.
So Luthair says that Volke finds himselfin more interesting situations than Mathis
ever did.
Luthair never had a clue that Volke wasbeing controlled by Karna.
And you think that dancing would have beenlike a key that something's going on?
(20:06):
He had to have known like.
I've never seen this guy dance before.
Right.
Like, especially when Volke was saying, Idon't, I can't dance.
I'm telling you, I cannot dance.
Not trying to be coy or like, oh, like lowkey about it.
No, he's like begging her that he cannotdance.
So we move into chapter 30 thieves.
(20:29):
And Volke kind of goes back to the party,gets himself, got, got to straighten
everything else out because she's, she'sstarting to tear clothes apart.
And.
make it look like things got hot and heavyand for rumors start floating around.
You know, at least he fixes himself, makeshimself presentable.
He goes over to the food whereeverything's laid out and Zaxis is just
(20:52):
sitting there just shoveling food down.
He's tried to eat all the food that'savailable at the gala.
And honestly, I think he would havesurpassed Hobbit's eating.
I think he would have given Goku a run forhis money.
Shovell it in, shovel it in.
Yep.
I'm not, I'm not.
He offers to give Volke some tips onkeeping his love life low key.
(21:15):
Cause he and Illia keep it classy.
Zaxis notices that Zelfree has, uh,prefers lords over the lady.
Zaxis makes a chop that Zelfree probablylikes the bookish one.
Volke's just like, eh, redheads actually.
And then.
I just, I could only imagine the look onZaxis's face when it clicks.
(21:39):
I'm a male redhead.
And then he's probably like, oh, that'swhy he wouldn't train me earlier.
That's going to go to his head.
Volke kind of ventures out to outside ofthe gala.
He kind of wants to get some fresh air.
And he realizes at this point that he'sactually got three shadows.
(21:59):
He's got his own shadow.
He's got Luthair and now he's got Fainfollowing him.
And I wonder again, wonder the thingwatching this whole shindig with Karna and
her practically like throwing herself atVolke what Fain was thinking like, like
(22:20):
this dude really not going to do that.
Like, good for him.
It's good for him.
Fain better have some popcorn orsomething.
He's getting all the good.
So do we have any conversation about how,um, the birds and the bees work or he's
probably thinking, man, I don't thinkVolke swings for that team now.
(22:41):
Probably not sure about that.
Lot of questions at least.
So Volke finds Zelfree and he starts tomake some small talk with him and
Zelfree's like, just shut up.
We'd stop getting into my personal affair.
Traces makes a joke about how husky ahydro arcanist voice.
sounds and that they could pull a sleighwith how husky their voice is.
(23:07):
And I love that Traces is just a littlematchmaker off on the side.
I'm like, you should go for him.
She is having a great time with us.
Like I'm going to do as much as I can tohelp him out.
Yes.
The other funny thing.
(23:28):
that comes up is Volke tries to tellZelfree what happened and Zelfree's like,
oh, I know it already.
I read it from your thoughts, which meansZelfree got every detail.
I'm surprised Zelfree didn't get brushedby that.
It's a lot to hold onto.
Right.
Or at least like, say something.
(23:50):
I don't know if I could hear that in yourthoughts and then just walk away from
that.
He's got a great poker face.
Right.
So then all of a sudden, and I'm going toprobably butcher the crap out of this
name, Vercinigatorix, and Shami does areally good job of saying this name versus
(24:11):
what I said, but Vercinigatorix activatesthe null stone, which is the sovereign
dragon of the queen.
We find out that there was a thief and allour candidates are going to be held while
that they ensure that they catch all ofthe thieves that were in.
Volke was, was kind of like, w we know itwas Karna.
She told us she was there to stealsomething and blame it on him.
(24:31):
So Volke just asked that, you know, can'the find her by, you know, his magic is a
mimic.
And this is where Zelfree explains thatdoppelgangers can actually hide their
magic even from mimics.
We find out that Adelgis is getting evenworse with no sign or hint on how to cure
him.
This is that, the struck feeling of just,you can't do enough that Adelgis is
(24:52):
fighting.
And unfortunately he just.
Nobody can do anything.
Zaxis is trying to heal him.
Gillie's trying to heal him, but nothingseems to be working.
So through the crowd, Volke does spot AttyAnd Atty comes up and asks if Volke could
believe that they were the thief in thecastle.
(25:12):
Now I feel like this is where Volke couldhave made some huge points by being like,
yeah, you for stealing my heart.
He had an opportunity and he missed it.
Like perfect opportunity.
Probably went home that night and waslike, dang it.
That's what she was looking for.
(25:35):
Well, she does say that she was searchingfor Volke the entire evening.
So I mean, Volke, you gotta be hellasmooth now.
They're leaving together.
They're going to take a trolley together.
He compliments her dress.
Like he's, he's hitting all the pointshere.
Even though he brought a girl from themoonlight district that was trying to

steal something and pin it on him.
Happened, but you know, it is what it is.
She does mention that he doesn'tcompliment anyone else so often as he does
compliment her first book was like, well,everybody compliments you.
Like that's just you.
She's like, but.
You don't compliment very many people likeyou compliment me.
(26:18):
So I think, I think that's Atty's way of,uh, throwing, throwing some my lifelines
out to come on, catch my hint.
Dang it.
The last remark we get from theirinteraction is that Atty thinks that Volke
can totally beat Zaxis and wants to seehim win the whole tourney.
A lot of confidence.
Like something's brewing.
(26:38):
Oh dang.
Like Volke.
Why didn't you ask Atty to the Gala?
Come on, man.
And this is where we leave off on chapter30 of this book.
We're going to dive into our bestiarysection here.
(26:58):
The first one we're going to touch on isthe Denglong.
So mythology, this does come from Chinesemythology.
We're going to avoid pronouncing theChinese version of it.
It's really at the top of the food chain.
and it's known to be able to take on fivedragons at one time.
It is often depicted feasting on theirheads.
(27:19):
Its Trial of Worth is a demonstration ofrighteousness.
It is actually considered tier three, so atier below dragons, and it is fable-born,
so it's born from a falling star thatstrikes a mountain.
It's described as being unwavering in itsmorals of justice.
It has front claws shaped like talons thatare able to rip through the scales of the
(27:41):
dragon.
We don't know much about its magic otherthan its passive abilities being immune to
fire.
Yeah, this is growlithe.
Yes.
This is totally growlithe.
And when it gets bigger, after it's beenfought, it turns into Arcanine and I will
fight my die on that hill.
(28:01):
True form.
Yes.
True form is Arcanine.
He's a good doggo.
Yes.
All right.
And then the next mythical creature we'regoing to go over today is the
doppelganger.
The mythology comes from Germany and adoppelganger is German for double goer.
(28:22):
It was said to be a wraith and an exactspirit double.
And these were signs of bad omens becausewhen you seen your doppelganger, it's
supposed to imply your imminent death.
Their trial of worth is a deadly questionthat is asked by the mother of all
We will not elaborate on that until we getlater on in the series.
(28:46):
This is a tier two confirmed.
So where we've gotten some confirmationwith the tier of this particular mystical
creature.
It's reproduction is progeny.
So it is again, created by the mother ofall shapeshifters from bodies who fail her
trial of worth for the mimic.
Their evocation is able to confuse andmuddle thoughts.
(29:09):
Their manipulation is they're able tomanipulate humans.
So they do have to actually physicallytouch the Arcanist to take control of
them.
And it's more so their gross and finermotor skills so they can make folk dance
really good or keep him from talking,their augmentation.
(29:29):
They can alter their appearance in any wayto include their Arcanist mark.
So they can change into.
any human appearance they see.
They cannot change into animals, butagain, any human form and they can
naturally hide their magic against magicaldetection.
So again, Mimics wouldn't be able to sensethat magic.
(29:50):
They do have an aura, which is imposterand it nullifies all magical detection and
can kind of change other people as thedoppelganger sees fit.
So if they wanted to make somebody bigger,stronger, faster, they can do that.
is in this aura and we do find their trueform is a gaus.

Volke intends to attend the gala dressedin his slightly shabby street clothes, but

Illia rescues him from himself by orderinghim clothes from the dressmaker as well.
Returning to the inn, Master Zelfreedoesn't allow Volke to rest and instead
has him leave on an urgent errand to seeAdelgis's father.
But before we get into the book, let'slook at a piece of advice from the series.

With that, let's join Eric and Scott forchapters 26 through 30 of Colosseum
Archimist.

And today we'll be diving into chapters 26through 30 of the Coliseum Arcanist book.

And with that, we'll get into chapter 26.
Chapter 26 is Theasin Venover, theartificer of Elios.
Adelgis, Volke, and Zelfree are going tomeet Theasin.
Volke is very troubled by Fain's commentsabout Zelfree and trying to figure out on
his own whether to believe Fain Does hebelieve Zelfree?
(02:39):
Is there any truth to these?
So he's struggling internally and rightnext to them.
Adelgis is also struggling internally andhe's worried more because he's able to
hear thoughts now and What is he gonnahear from his dad?
And if Theasin was my dad, I'd be scaredof hearing that as well Yeah, I don't
(03:01):
think I'd wanna know Some things arebetter left untouched so they arrived the
artificier building
It's very clean except for a pile of trashin the corner.
And as we talked about a few chapters ago,Theasin's Eldrin is a trash dragon.
(03:23):
So I would have to guess that the trash ishis trash dragon.
Theasin comes out and Zelfree gets into ashouting match with him, confronts him,
and Theasin ends up agreeing to remove theleech.
He says that it needs to bond shortlyafter being removed.
As this discussion is going on, heactually offers for Zelfree to join him,
(03:45):
which Zelfree is very, very opposed todoing.
The pile of trash does turn out to be thetrash truck.
And I can only, only imagine how awful itsounds when it moves because it is a bunch
of scraping and scratching.
Has to be awful.
Not at this moment, but we do find outkind of shortly in the near future that it
(04:07):
can actually speak.
It actually communicates.
via telepathy, which is very cool andunique for dragons.
Especially it's like Eldrins in general,because everybody's Eldrins talks.
Yeah, it's very, very rare to see.
So very cool, very interesting.
Zelfree ends up storming out of the labwhile they're waiting.
(04:31):
Adelgis is okay.
Felicity is communicating.
One of the few other Eldrins that cancommunicate through thoughts.
She's in touch with Adelgis.
She finds out that Adelgis is okay.
The leech was removed.
I just want to talk about how absolutelycold Theasin is towards his own son.
Like, no hug, no, oh my gosh, I haven'tseen you in forever.
(04:54):
Like, what's going on?
No, oh, your leech is ready to come out.
Let me go get that taken care of for you.
And shoot, he's more concerned aboutgetting the leech out of his own son than
he is about his own son.
Like, he'll be fine.
He says, I have one leech, but I've gotlike three sons.
It's savage.
That really is, but that's almost hismindset is that like, I can't afford to
(05:17):
lose the leech because there won't beanother one, but the leech is removed, but
Thiesin isn't back, Adelgis isn't back,they're still in the back room.
I'm assuming going through post-opprocedures.
Volke is wandering around the lab and endsup seeing few documents in the lab about
creating artifacts.
And one of those is actually a letter
the librarian who is telling Theasin thatEventide came back to talk about the
(05:43):
runestones and was wondering if they couldactually be recreated.
And Theasin says there's not really enoughmagic or enough knowledge to be able to do
this.
Theasin finally returns with the leech andtalks with Volke about how important it
is.
They are actually able to manipulate magicand the plague is a manipulation of magic.
(06:03):
So the leech is a possible cure for theplague.
Which is more important than what Gillie'sdoing because Gillie is really treating
the symptom with the trinkets.
You know, they can't be truly massproduced because they require star shards
and the Wendigo horns.
But if the leech can cure the plague, thenthat would solve the problem for everyone.
(06:26):
He also almost like treats her as if she'sway beneath him, which that's just him in
general.
So.
Not surprised there.
How dare you even compare me to her, speakabout her and me in the same sense, you
know, trying to compare us.
Very high and mighty.
Yeah.
Theasin as part of his, his magic with hisEldrin, he can sense the type and power of
(06:51):
artifacts and he can actually sense theshield.
He doesn't quite know what it's made from,but he can tell that it's poorly made.
Not surprising since Volke had never madean artifact before.
He thinks that he could help.
Volke fix it and make it a whole lotstronger.
Even when he's like, Oh, this is so poorlymade.
And Volke's like, yeah, that was my firstthing I made.
(07:14):
He's like, no, it wasn't like there's noway you definitely did not.
Like bullshit.
He called him.
It looks like I did it.
What do you want?
Volke was just like, you know what?
You're not worth my effort of trying toargue about it.
So just whatever.
Finally, finally Adelgis comes out of theback room.
(07:34):
He's practically falling down the stairs,not in good shape.
When, and he does try to like straightenup and show that he's not limping or hurt
at least in front of his father.
But like, first off, there's no post-op.
You tell me that there's no meds.
Like, are they just this bad ass that theycould just go into surgery, have a leech
(07:54):
removed and not be like struggling reallybadly afterwards?
I mean, he is, but like nobody's like, oh,here's some.
healing magic or potion or tonic orwhatever to help you out and recover a
little itsy bit.
No.
Yeah, this thing was attached to yourorgans.
(08:15):
It's not like on top of your skin.
They had to cut in to cut it out.
It is major surgery.
Give the guy something.
A couple Tylenol at least.
Cures everything.
Don't forget to hydrate.
(08:35):
Hydration was the most important part.
Tea.
Tea's great.
That brings us to chapter 27, and thisinvolves them still in the lab and making
their way out.
And again, Adelgis is very, very concernedthat his dad will harp on him for not
standing up straight and walking right, sohe's really doing his best to hold it
(08:58):
together, but he pretty much needs to becarried by Volke out.
His brother Nero walks in, and one thingthat Volke notices is that his arcanist
mark on his forehead isn't
super defined yet, which means that it'snewly bound.
So whatever his Eldrin is and Volkedoesn't recognize it, it is a very recent
(09:20):
connection.
Volke and Zelfree end up taking Adelgisback to the inn.
He's slowly getting worse and worse.
They decide to take him to the university.
Gillie's there and there's a lot betterresources.
So they're hoping that they could findsome way to help him out.
We're given instructions by Zelfree beforehe left Theasin's artificial place of,
(09:45):
don't leave without me.
And here we are.
Like Zelfree got, got back and wasprobably like, you son of a bitch.
Nobody listens.
Why does nobody listen?
Zelfree actually talks and explains alittle bit about what Abdelgis is
suffering from.
So one of the things is that when you bondwith an Eldrin.
(10:09):
it almost shares and lives off of yoursoul.
Your soul heals itself.
So as long as you're only bonded to one,there's no harm done.
And you kind of both benefit from therelationship.
But if you try to bond to a second one, itbecomes too much and it eats away on you
and you actually die because your soulgets eaten away.
(10:30):
And what Zelfree suspects happened is whenthe leech was going to be removed, the
leech was feeding off of Zelfree's soul.
It wasn't going to kill him because itneeded him to live, but when it started to
be cut out, it likely took a big bite.
And that's what Adelgis is suffering fromis this sudden loss of a lot more soul
than he likely can handle.
(10:52):
So Zaxis ends up showing up to try andheal Adelgis.
He's not able to do much.
And when he talks with Volke about
Everything he's really spending all hisfree time with Illia So that relationship
skyrocketed real quick.
Zaxis this is a Phoenix arcanist right?
He got them flames going real fast.
Hot and fast.
(11:14):
Atty shows up and she's talking with Volkeand says that she actually did learn how
to heal.
She spent some time alone in a room andwas able to figure it out.
She shows him by pricking his finger andthen healing him.
Like, okay, that's-
Fair enough.
You know, she knows that a little prickisn't going to be too dangerous for him.
So, but that was kind of cute that she's,I want to show Volke first and, and Volke
(11:38):
sitting here thinking like, oh gosh, likewe're, we're alone.
We're having this conversation.
And I can only imagine it clicking in, inhis brain of, Oh God, Fain's probably
following me.
And he just kind of talks out of nowhereto nobody just, Hey, um, I'd really like
some privacy here.
You're basically telling, telling Fain toGTFO.
(12:01):
is probably like, what the hell is goingon?
Things looks crazy.
It reminds me of a Harry Potter, thesecond, the second book, or is it, I guess
the movie more so.
You know, they're in Hagrids Hut and ifanybody needs answers, just follow the
spiders.
And everybody's sitting there like, whothe hell are you talking to?
(12:22):
No one Out there, you know
And next to show up is Hexa.
She ends up going to Volke andshortcutting everything and asking if he
will go to the gala with Atty because shedoesn't think Atty is going to ask.
And Volke tells her the truth and says,Hey, I met Karna who is from the Moonlight
District and she's amazing and she cansing and dance.
(12:45):
And I'm going to go to the gala with her.
And Hexa die, like just starts dying,laughing like you're bringing a whore to
this, to the gala.
And again, Volke is so, so naive that he'sprobably like, no, she's not.
She is a singer and a dancer and she's notlike that.
She is not a lady of the night.
(13:06):
Okay.
Poor Volke.
He's probably like, how do I keep endingit up in these situations?
Well, what one more girl that I got todeal with.
And that brings us to chapter 28, which isthe Queen's Gala.
(13:30):
And Volke is preparing to go and ends upcutting himself with the razor from
William.
Luckily he heals super quickly, so it'snot a big deal, but he does have this
sense of pride from using the razor andthinking of William.
Imagine him walking out of the hotel witha bunch of toilet paper stuck to his face.
(13:51):
I've shaved before.
Imagine Karna was like, Oh God, I can'tbelieve I have to go to this.
What did I do?
So luckily he heals.
Luckily, very luckily he heals.
Cause Karna does show up in the carriageand he mentions that it's his first date.
(14:11):
And we actually realized that the driveris the exact same person that lured Volke
into the show to begin with.
So it's a coincidence here.
Man of many talents.
I guess so.
I mean, maybe he's her personal bodyguard.
What's a beer belly?
They get to the gala and of course thepuppy arcanist that they were getting into
(14:36):
a fight with earlier there, and theirdates insult Karna, and Volke didn't
realize she was a lady of the night.
This is news to him, so he gets upset andhe's not even upset that she's a lady of
the night.
That's a-
her choice, but he's upset that allArcanists don't have these high moral
(14:59):
standards that he read about in all hisbooks, which I thought was funny because
he's dealt with pirates, someone createdthe plague, he knows quite a few people.
They're just not nice to Karna, and that'stheir failing trait.
But he is willing to risk his reputationfor her.
At first, Karna asked him if he wasembarrassed, and he said yes.
(15:23):
And she was totally expecting him beingembarrassed to her, but then he's
explaining how he's embarrassed about hispeers and they're acting like they were.
And maybe, maybe Volke was upset becausethe Arcanist that he's meeting at the gala
are, are not the pirates.
They're not the ones that are, that werecreating the plague.
So he, he had this expectation of, I wouldsay non questionable moral as the Arcanist
(15:48):
says, quote unquote bad guy.
So he just assumed that all Arcanists thatwere not bad.
held themselves to higher standards.
And that leads us into chapter 29, justiceor revenge.
Karna was so absolutely surprised thatVolke stood up for her the way he did.
She wanted him to dance with her.
(16:09):
And Volke feels kind of this magic in hertouch and does a double take on her
forehead just to make sure she doesn'thave an arcanist mark.
And no mark, but there's
definitely magic at work.
He's loses control of his body and he'smoving out of his own choice.
Red flag a little bit, but she takes himout on the dance floor and folks are just
(16:30):
like, look, I don't dance.
Like I got two left feet.
Like really I don't have any feet fordancing.
She takes the lead and they're justcrushing on the dance floor, doing the
doing the Dougie and the cha-cha slidehere.
And everybody stops what they're doing andstaring at them because of how just insane
that they're doing.
And it's a very fast-paced song.
(16:51):
Once the song gets over, Karna takes himsomewhere private upstairs and she kind
of, she leads him there knowing exactlywhere she's going with him.
And she finally reveals her Arcanist mark.
And she talks to Volke about it and saysthat she usually hides it because then she
gets to see people's true nature.
(17:11):
So people like the puppy Arcanist, sheunderstands right away that they aren't
living...
up to the highest standards because theywould treat somebody lesser than poorly,
you know, even regardless of whether sheis actually an Arcanist or not.
We do find out that she is a doppelgangerArcanist knowing how the high born, they
(17:32):
listening to ACOTAR lately.
So sorry.
Gotta re realign how things are called.
Um, the, the Arcanist, they're higherabove everybody else in Thronehold at
least.
treat those that are mortals like they'resecond class citizens.
And so it makes complete sense why Karnawants to do this and doesn't want people
(17:55):
knowing that she's an Arcanist when shefirst meets up.
She, she talks about justice and revengeand Volke is talks about how justice is
meant to right a wrong and revenge is tocause suffering, to write the wrong, but
then go further.
This is actually, he quotes the pillaragain.
(18:16):
So going back to his, to his home with thesteps on the pillar.
He's like, keep it up.
My day ones.
So she tells Volke that she really wantedto embarrass Volke and not necessarily
Volke personally, assuming that he wasgoing to be a pompous Arcanist.
She does this because she was embarrassedin front of others before, before when she
(18:37):
was immortal, she kind of explains why shedid what she did.
Then she takes control over Volke's bodyagain, after she touches him.
Again, she's a doppelganger Arcanist andyou know, she's meant to steal something
and blame it on Volke.
Was going to make it easy for herself byfighting this, um, you know, asshole
(18:57):
Arcanist to have him embarrass her.
And then she can go and steal somethingand blame it on that Arcanist.
And Volke is slowly realizing through thisconversation, she gets to the end of it.
And I just picture him going, wait.
I'm the Arcanist you were gonna hurt?
He should have picked up on that rightaway, but he's going along his merry way
(19:19):
until the end of it.
And then it's like, man, that would havebeen rough.
I like nodded along like, yeah, I mean,that makes sense.
And then he's just like, oh, wait.
She escapes and lets Volke go afterwards.
She does this like backflip thing off ofthe balcony.
into the gardens below, which was prettybadass in my opinion.
(19:43):
She's probably wearing heels or something,so I can't imagine the easiest of
plannings here, but you know, women thatdo that, you know, especially with all the
superhero movies and stuff like that, Iapplaud you for that.
So Luthair says that Volke finds himselfin more interesting situations than Mathis
ever did.
Luthair never had a clue that Volke wasbeing controlled by Karna.
And you think that dancing would have beenlike a key that something's going on?
(20:06):
He had to have known like.
I've never seen this guy dance before.
Right.
Like, especially when Volke was saying, Idon't, I can't dance.
I'm telling you, I cannot dance.
Not trying to be coy or like, oh, like lowkey about it.
No, he's like begging her that he cannotdance.
So we move into chapter 30 thieves.
(20:29):
And Volke kind of goes back to the party,gets himself, got, got to straighten
everything else out because she's, she'sstarting to tear clothes apart.
And.
make it look like things got hot and heavyand for rumors start floating around.
You know, at least he fixes himself, makeshimself presentable.
He goes over to the food whereeverything's laid out and Zaxis is just
(20:52):
sitting there just shoveling food down.
He's tried to eat all the food that'savailable at the gala.
And honestly, I think he would havesurpassed Hobbit's eating.
I think he would have given Goku a run forhis money.
Shovell it in, shovel it in.
Yep.
I'm not, I'm not.
He offers to give Volke some tips onkeeping his love life low key.
(21:15):
Cause he and Illia keep it classy.
Zaxis notices that Zelfree has, uh,prefers lords over the lady.
Zaxis makes a chop that Zelfree probablylikes the bookish one.
Volke's just like, eh, redheads actually.
And then.
I just, I could only imagine the look onZaxis's face when it clicks.
(21:39):
I'm a male redhead.
And then he's probably like, oh, that'swhy he wouldn't train me earlier.
That's going to go to his head.
Volke kind of ventures out to outside ofthe gala.
He kind of wants to get some fresh air.
And he realizes at this point that he'sactually got three shadows.
(21:59):
He's got his own shadow.
He's got Luthair and now he's got Fainfollowing him.
And I wonder again, wonder the thingwatching this whole shindig with Karna and
her practically like throwing herself atVolke what Fain was thinking like, like
(22:20):
this dude really not going to do that.
Like, good for him.
It's good for him.
Fain better have some popcorn orsomething.
He's getting all the good.
So do we have any conversation about how,um, the birds and the bees work or he's
probably thinking, man, I don't thinkVolke swings for that team now.
(22:41):
Probably not sure about that.
Lot of questions at least.
So Volke finds Zelfree and he starts tomake some small talk with him and
Zelfree's like, just shut up.
We'd stop getting into my personal affair.
Traces makes a joke about how husky ahydro arcanist voice.
sounds and that they could pull a sleighwith how husky their voice is.
(23:07):
And I love that Traces is just a littlematchmaker off on the side.
I'm like, you should go for him.
She is having a great time with us.
Like I'm going to do as much as I can tohelp him out.
Yes.
The other funny thing.
(23:28):
that comes up is Volke tries to tellZelfree what happened and Zelfree's like,
oh, I know it already.
I read it from your thoughts, which meansZelfree got every detail.
I'm surprised Zelfree didn't get brushedby that.
It's a lot to hold onto.
Right.
Or at least like, say something.
(23:50):
I don't know if I could hear that in yourthoughts and then just walk away from
that.
He's got a great poker face.
Right.
So then all of a sudden, and I'm going toprobably butcher the crap out of this
name, Vercinigatorix, and Shami does areally good job of saying this name versus
(24:11):
what I said, but Vercinigatorix activatesthe null stone, which is the sovereign
dragon of the queen.
We find out that there was a thief and allour candidates are going to be held while
that they ensure that they catch all ofthe thieves that were in.
Volke was, was kind of like, w we know itwas Karna.
She told us she was there to stealsomething and blame it on him.
(24:31):
So Volke just asked that, you know, can'the find her by, you know, his magic is a
mimic.
And this is where Zelfree explains thatdoppelgangers can actually hide their
magic even from mimics.
We find out that Adelgis is getting evenworse with no sign or hint on how to cure
him.
This is that, the struck feeling of just,you can't do enough that Adelgis is
(24:52):
fighting.
And unfortunately he just.
Nobody can do anything.
Zaxis is trying to heal him.
Gillie's trying to heal him, but nothingseems to be working.
So through the crowd, Volke does spot AttyAnd Atty comes up and asks if Volke could
believe that they were the thief in thecastle.
(25:12):
Now I feel like this is where Volke couldhave made some huge points by being like,
yeah, you for stealing my heart.
He had an opportunity and he missed it.
Like perfect opportunity.
Probably went home that night and waslike, dang it.
That's what she was looking for.
(25:35):
Well, she does say that she was searchingfor Volke the entire evening.
So I mean, Volke, you gotta be hellasmooth now.
They're leaving together.
They're going to take a trolley together.
He compliments her dress.
Like he's, he's hitting all the pointshere.
Even though he brought a girl from themoonlight district that was trying to
(25:56):
steal something and pin it on him.
Happened, but you know, it is what it is.
She does mention that he doesn'tcompliment anyone else so often as he does
compliment her first book was like, well,everybody compliments you.
Like that's just you.
She's like, but.
You don't compliment very many people likeyou compliment me.
(26:18):
So I think, I think that's Atty's way of,uh, throwing, throwing some my lifelines
out to come on, catch my hint.
Dang it.
The last remark we get from theirinteraction is that Atty thinks that Volke
can totally beat Zaxis and wants to seehim win the whole tourney.
A lot of confidence.
Like something's brewing.
(26:38):
Oh dang.
Like Volke.
Why didn't you ask Atty to the Gala?
Come on, man.
And this is where we leave off on chapter30 of this book.
We're going to dive into our bestiarysection here.
(26:58):
The first one we're going to touch on isthe Denglong.
So mythology, this does come from Chinesemythology.
We're going to avoid pronouncing theChinese version of it.
It's really at the top of the food chain.
and it's known to be able to take on fivedragons at one time.
It is often depicted feasting on theirheads.
(27:19):
Its Trial of Worth is a demonstration ofrighteousness.
It is actually considered tier three, so atier below dragons, and it is fable-born,
so it's born from a falling star thatstrikes a mountain.
It's described as being unwavering in itsmorals of justice.
It has front claws shaped like talons thatare able to rip through the scales of the
(27:41):
dragon.
We don't know much about its magic otherthan its passive abilities being immune to
fire.
Yeah, this is growlithe.
Yes.
This is totally growlithe.
And when it gets bigger, after it's beenfought, it turns into Arcanine and I will
fight my die on that hill.
(28:01):
True form.
Yes.
True form is Arcanine.
He's a good doggo.
Yes.
All right.
And then the next mythical creature we'regoing to go over today is the
doppelganger.
The mythology comes from Germany and adoppelganger is German for double goer.
(28:22):
It was said to be a wraith and an exactspirit double.
And these were signs of bad omens becausewhen you seen your doppelganger, it's
supposed to imply your imminent death.
Their trial of worth is a deadly questionthat is asked by the mother of all
We will not elaborate on that until we getlater on in the series.
(28:46):
This is a tier two confirmed.
So where we've gotten some confirmationwith the tier of this particular mystical
creature.
It's reproduction is progeny.
So it is again, created by the mother ofall shapeshifters from bodies who fail her
trial of worth for the mimic.
Their evocation is able to confuse andmuddle thoughts.
(29:09):
Their manipulation is they're able tomanipulate humans.
So they do have to actually physicallytouch the Arcanist to take control of
them.
And it's more so their gross and finermotor skills so they can make folk dance
really good or keep him from talking,their augmentation.
(29:29):
They can alter their appearance in any wayto include their Arcanist mark.
So they can change into.
any human appearance they see.
They cannot change into animals, butagain, any human form and they can
naturally hide their magic against magicaldetection.
So again, Mimics wouldn't be able to sensethat magic.
(29:50):
They do have an aura, which is imposterand it nullifies all magical detection and
can kind of change other people as thedoppelganger sees fit.
So if they wanted to make somebody bigger,stronger, faster, they can do that.
