Our hosts are Eric Smith and Scott Warehamand they'll be your guides along this
journey through pirate infested waters.
So grab your Eldrin, strap on your swordsand get ready to defend the seas from
evil.
Throughout the series, if you would notcut up to the chapters being discussed

(00:21):
today, we urge you to hit the pausebutton, grab your copy of this wonderful
book and catch up.
We'll be here when you get back.
With Barrow's Sylph magic putting wind intheir sails, Master Zelfree makes good
time reaching Tower Isle, home to the cityof Port Crown and its Roc Arcanist,
gargantuan birds with wings the size ofsailing ships.
Then, armed with Whiteheart magic, Zelfreeand Volke must pass a roomful of pirates

(00:45):
up to the second floor of the Gold Grottoand rescue Illia Meanwhile, she's busy
trying to assassinate the dread pirateCallisto when he's awake, armed, and
surrounded by the most powerful of hiscrew.
But before we get into the book, let'slook at two more pieces of advice from the
series.
Step nine on the pillar of rumor saysloyalty.
Without it, we cannot know truefriendship.

(01:07):
And step 11 says conviction.
Without it, virtues are just words.
Now let's get into chapter 16 through 20of Dread Pirate Arcanist.
Well, everybody, welcome back to the FrithGuild podcast where we're going over Dread
Pirate Arcanist.
I'm your host, Eric.
And I'm your co -host, Scott.
And today we're going to be going overDread Pirate Arcanist chapters 16 through

(01:30):
20.
So strap on your swords and let's getstarted.
So we're getting into Port Crown and thisis after Zelfree made his grand entrance
and happened to show up on the ship withthem and Volke has to put his foot down
with Zelfree and tell him like, look,we're going to go find Illia.
So we enter into Port Crown and it'sdescribed as very ominous.

(01:55):
Uh, it's surrounded by jagged mountains.
It's got haunted beaches and a creepy wallof gray and white.
And this place just all around does notsound like a fun place to be.
It feels very piratey when a pirate isle,it fits the bill.
Right.
You could have made this better.
I feel like it's almost like Pirates ofthe Caribbean level pirate island.

(02:18):
It definitely has that feel to it.
All right.
And then we can find mystical creatures.
Pretty much any mystical creature part youwant to find.
And they keep circling back to PhoenixHearts.
And poor Atty with this one.
She seems very bothered and you just getthe feeling that she's picturing the loss
of her elderin in there with the PhoenixHeart didn't taken.

(02:39):
So no real insight into why they're soimportant, but you can imagine based on
some of the imbuing and magical propertiesthat could be very powerful.
Right.
Especially with her fire.
That's their core gives them fire.
So Adelgis is aware of
of Port Crown and its illicit and illegalpotentially parts of magical creatures

(03:00):
because his father has actually gottenthings from this place before.
And this is one of those, they don't knowwhether it was legally obtained or not.
This is black market of mystical creatureparts.
And it doesn't sound like his fatherreally cares.
He's more in for science for the sake ofscience, which is slightly concerning, but
Adelgis just seems to be much more on themoral side of it.

(03:24):
Right.
At least, at least it does feel like thathas that morality with him rather than his
father of just being like, I don't care.
I want to find whatever piece that I needto, to research and to prove my scientific
theory or whatever.
So Volke wants to write all the injusticein the world and realizes that Port Crown
is, is really one of those places youcan't take back.

(03:46):
Fortunately, it's just not going tohappen.
The Queen and the Navy, her Navy is notgoing to try to take this back.
Mainly because they're.
This is home to all the pirates.
There are three Roc's and that's ROC, notROCK, like a boulder Roc.
They're standing guard.
And these are just essentially massivebirds that can control the elements of the

(04:07):
wind and storms and that kind of thing.
So they are in all essence of guardians ofthis port and they're, they're elders of
the Arcanist that run Port Crown.
So if they don't see somebody that, orthey see somebody that isn't supposed to
be there, then.
They're just going to take out the wholeship to keep that one person out.

(04:28):
And they're massive so they can.
And it's very cool because Volke is veryscared if he's going to be picked out and
Adelgis just reads the thoughts of them, which is super cool and just describes
that they're really on the lookout forvery specific people.
So they're not concerned with some of theminor things that Volke may have been

(04:49):
involved with.
They're on the lookout for somethingbigger that could be.
Queen or the Navy trying to come through.
And I like how they described it, the shipgoing into port.
They took all their flags down from theirmast when they, when they arrived there,
just to do the potential for getting introuble.
And they basically said nobody can flyunder a flag when they're going in the

(05:10):
port.
So next week, as we get into the portitself, we actually see the Third Abyss
It's described as a Man o' War class ship.
It is 200 feet long.
has 124 cannons, four decks, four mess, and it can accommodate up to a thousand
people.
So that's a huge ship.

(05:32):
And this one is special in particularbecause it's built out of ghost wood and
actually it emits a really dense fog whenit went, whether it's be growing or has
been cut down.
And they talk a little bit that Callistohas some way of actually seeing through
the fog.
So it's almost a second level of defensefor the ship where the ship can see

(05:56):
through the fog and is prepared to ambushor defend itself and has an advantage over
really anyone that's trying to counterthem.
Could you imagine being on the seas andthen this giant fog bank comes up behind
you and it's a ship, but you can't see it.
You can't do anything against it.
You know where it is.
Yes.
And especially with the reputation, it'sknown for its wall of fog.

(06:18):
So bad things are coming once, once ithops up on the horizon.
So we also find out this is not Zelfree'sfirst time in Port Crown And he actually
splits up the teams, splits Atty andAdelgis together.
And he tells them to go to a room or acertain hotel and they actually work with
the Frith Guild and tells them to use thecode phrase that they want a room that

(06:40):
smells good.
And he actually roughs him up a little bitbefore he goes.
He gives.
Atty his coat and smears a little dirt onthem just so that they blend in a little
more.
He doesn't want them standing out in anyway that he can avoid it.
Adelgis just, despite, hopefully his bestwishes, keeps pushing this, this market.
So there's, there's something there thathe wants to check out.

(07:01):
So he's, he's very interested in what goeson in the market.
And again, it gets you wondering, doesAdelgis just really have things he wants
to find in this market that are notnecessarily on the up and up or is he
just.
curious more so than anything.
So Zelfree and Volke are going to go lookfor Illia in hopes of finding them and
convincing her to leave before she meetswith Callisto.

(07:25):
And this is where we move into chapter 17where we meet the Dread Pirate Callisto.
And Zelfree is actually able to utilizethe White Heart Magic that he found
somewhere within Crown and makes themalmost impossible to hear.
He muffles their, their sounds as far astheir clothing, their footsteps,

(07:46):
everything.
So they're, they're going full on stealtharchery mode and you know, I'm sorry,
that's Skyrim So they're going full, fullstealth and Zelfree can, you know, we get
a little bit more understanding of whathis ability with magic is.
And he explains basically all of, all ofhis magic.

(08:11):
to answer how it works is if you questionhow Mimic Arcanist knows how to utilize
magic, it's because he can sense magic.
What we get from it as far as reading goesis to this point.
It's one of those things that's just sounique to the Mimic that it's hard to

(08:31):
explain something.
You can explain how fire feels becausepeople have felt it before, but nobody
else has a sense of what magic reallyfeels like.
So it's very...
It's tough to explain, you know, oh, I canfeel these things, what that actually
feels like to me.
It's so unique.
Right.
And I wonder because even Dan, our editormade a comment to me about this was wonder

(08:55):
back in the first book in our Negmarcanistwhen Zelfree moves the Cray and has Illia
move the Cray later, did he practice that?
Does he have to practice that before hecan do it with the ability?
Or is he just because he's a masterArcanist, he can, as far as mimics go, he
can just do the magic without trying.
One other thing I want to make mention ofreal quick is Volke definitely is not

(09:18):
comfortable with white hearts.
Whether or not he's utilizing theirabilities or just any kind of association
with white arts.
And I can understand that.
He has a bad history with them.
So he's.
He's willing to dissipate, but it's morebecause there's no other option and
Zelfree is forcing him into it.

(09:39):
He's definitely not happy about leveragingtheir magic.
So Volke and Zelfree are going on theirstealth mission and Volke has to hold on
to Zelfree basically in order to keep himinvisible.
And this is just felt the very HarryPotter invisibility cloak where you gotta
make sure everyone's under the cloak.
You gotta make sure you're holding on tothem.

(09:59):
They seem to be able to navigate through abar without running into anyone, which I
think for two people to do that is quite afeat in itself.
Yeah.
It's like almost possible not to run intosomebody or something while you're in
here.
They're in the Golden Grotto and Zelfreecan also sense that there's a Windegoi

(10:20):
Arcanist in there.
So that's probably Wraith or Fain And thenhe can also sense that Illia is there.
She can actually kind of, she's upstairsand he can also feel Callisto.
So Zelfree and Volke get upstairs to whereIllia is.
And this, the scene just feels very boss, godfather -esque where, you know,

(10:42):
Callisto's in the back.
You got to go walk past the separatebouncer just to go see him.
And the bouncer in this case happens to bea grifter crow, Arcanist, which they
pretty much decide is described as being asleight of hand magician.
So very low on the totem pole with, withpowers.
Yeah.
It's like, they're the, you know, me, I'mso cool and awesome because I'm an

(11:04):
Arcanist, but yeah, I'm other Arcanist.
They're probably like, eh, just a GrifterCrow.
Like, it's a big deal.
Real power there.
It's a party trick.
Right.
So they get up there and they see Illia, but there's not enough time to leave.
When three more people show up, there's aKappa Arcanist, a Snallygaster Arcanist.

(11:26):
And there's Callisto.
It's a quick description for the Kappa.
They're a humanoid like fish.
Their trial of worth is kind of, yeah, well though, a tough because they have to
offer their firstborn child in order tobond with one.
So can understand why not a lot of peoplewant to bond with that.

(11:49):
It's a tough trade.
And then the Snallygaster is half lizard, half bird, flies on crooked wings and
requires part of the Arcanist to beoffered for the trial of Worth And just so
happens the Arcanist that has theSnallygaster on his forehead is actually

(12:10):
missing half his leg.
So probably understand where that went to.
Okay.
And then we finally meet Dread PirateCallisto.
And we get a really good description ofhim.
He's described as being as young as 25.
We know that he's well over a century oldand he's got copper auburn hair.
He wears an ankle length tailored coatwith crimson lion mane stitching to the

(12:35):
collar.
He's got a dull black shirt on.
Carries pistols on his belt and knives inhis boots.
He's got various bracelets on his wristand his arcanist mark glows similar to
guildmaster Eventide's
And it does extend, you know, back, uh, onhis head, down his shoulder.

(12:55):
And this is just the perfect descriptionof a pirate, the long coat, the white
bands, the jewelry.
He is, is a picture image of a dreadpirate.
Oh yeah.
He's definitely cool.
Even, even though he's a pirate andeverything, like this dude is cool.
He oozes confidence.

(13:16):
Exactly.
Calisto and Illia start their meeting and.
Calisto really just wants to ensure thatthere's one specific page in this book
that is actually still there and is of acompass.
And yeah, kind of to monologue herselfabout why she was there.

(13:37):
She kind of with him and that he killedher parents and he took her eye.
It takes Calisto a second, but he actuallyremembers that Illia is the one that
escaped from his ship and even says thathe recognized his handiwork.
Yeah.
The scars taken from her.
And then.
Illia makes her move.
She goes to serve the venom at Calisto andCalisto being a manticore Arcanist, he's

(14:03):
able to pull up his dagger to keep it fromhitting him.
And when I was reading this, I'm like, man, that's it.
Like gonna be done.
Like she's not gonna, you know, take it.
And then she teleports the venom to theother side of the dagger.
Like, that's pretty good.
So she teleports the venom to the otherside of the dagger and hits him square in
the face with this.
And you're just like, yes.

(14:24):
She got him.
She's going to die now.
And then he just wipes it off his face andlicks it.
And he's like, Oh, King Basilisk venom.
That's the choice there.
He's a little impressed with it.
He's not the first to try it, but hedefinitely wasn't expecting something
powerful and potent as King Basilisk tocome from her.

(14:46):
Yeah.
And it's like, Oh, he's going to lick thisvenom off my face.
Like, how the hell is he?
How is he still alive?
You know, this is where we had thatimbuing class Gillie that, you know, kind
of explains some things because Callistopulls out a unicorn horn, you know, and
imbued so that he can resist and it'sprotected from all poisons.

(15:08):
And you, you have to imagine he's got theartifact, which is protecting him from
poison.
He has all the jewelry on his wrists aswell.
You have to imagine that there's a fewother trinkets there that are helping him
in some way, protecting him from.
Some sort of harm so he is fully prepared.
He's a century old and he's learned allthe tricks in the book and he's Protected

(15:30):
from them as best he can be Exactly likelike you can't kill the guy.
All right, so Fain actually ends up inpopping up behind Illia and steals back
the journal so, you know, they've got thejournal again like what the heck and This
is when Calisto starts to go after Illiaand um,

(15:51):
Goes into chapter 18 with the OccultCompass and Calisto actually stabs Illia.
Like just lightning quick because of hisabilities.
Yeah.
Basically told Volke, Hey, you gotta bequiet.
You gotta do what I say when I say it.
Do not go off course of what I'm doing.
This is where can't blame Volkewhatsoever.

(16:12):
Cause you know, just got stabbed byCalisto.
You know, just stole the journal back.
Volke has enough and he lets go of Zelfreeand merges with Luthair
Thankfully, Illia was just able to deuceout with the momentary attraction of Volke
and Luthair And this feels like sheactually did plan for this.

(16:32):
She's really concerned about her plan andshe actually pulled it off.
She was able to get away without itworking.
So props to her for that one.
She teleported away.
That was her plan.
She teleported away.
She did it.
So Zelfree is actually really upset withVolke because...
Again, Zelfree didn't tell Volke to move, didn't tell him to do anything, but Volke

(16:55):
did it anyways.
And this is a strong bad string forZelfree of people just not listening to
directions.
So, you know, just as I imagine Furiouswith every time Volke decides not to
listen, you know, the plan not, not payingattention to some of those surroundings.
Right, like we just want to listen toZelfree.

(17:16):
Like I'm saying the guy's got a horribleplaying video.
But.
He's trying to just keep them safe.
That's all he cares about.
He just wants them safe.
Volke manages to get the journal back andit's fairly impressive actually with just
how he was able to grab it for theshadows.
And then immediately shadow step withZelfree to get out of danger.

(17:36):
And again, this is kind of like Zelfree, does he borrow the magic and then with it
so he can do it better.
So that way when he does practice with hisapprentices, he's able to use it better.
especially with these uncommon ones likeKnightmare the Rizzles or the Ethereal
Welk.
He definitely has experience.

(17:58):
So it's either him practicing or he's justgone on enough adventures with enough of
the world to know his way around.
Yeah.
I'm not saying he awesome, but he does alittle, he's got to practice a little bit.
So I'll can, Illia now have bounties ontheir heads, literally.
And they're not in a very friendly place.

(18:19):
Great.
We're Zelfree.
He gives us a friend.
This is one instruction.
Very easy, very clear.
Stay in the hotel room.
What does the Adelgis do?
He leaves.
He goes to the market.
The boy is obsessed.
Whatever's in the markets, he is after it.
So Zelfree is going to know, does he haveto, you know, all of his apprentices?

(18:40):
Now he's got to find another one.
You know, Illia is like on her own, youknow, way.
And he knows that Calisto is hunting Illiaand he's got her set with the blood.
So.
Now, Zelfree's got to do the same thing, transforming, you know, has traces,
transforming into a manticore so that hecan hunt Illia so that he can get ahead of

(19:05):
time.
And one kind of interesting thing thatVolke points out is that even when Zelfree
goes to a manticore or Canist, his markdoes not glow the way Callisto's does.
So, you know, some hinting foreshadowingthat there's something going on that
causes the marks to glow.

(19:25):
And that's not even something that they'llfreak him mimic.
Yeah.
Good point in that.
So thankfully, uh, Volke does have a goodindication as to where, where to look for
first before Calisto can get her sent orset her tracker down.
But Calisto was after the journal as well.
Maybe Calisto wouldn't have just goneafter her, but because Volke stole the

(19:47):
journal back, um, now he's adamant aboutmaking sure to get that journal so he can
get the entry about the alcohol compassand.
It's turned out by Olivia Bright and it'san artifact that was made from an eye from
an all -seeing sphinx And it's very rare.
It says that there are only three made andthat two were known to have been

(20:08):
destroyed.
So there's one left there with a sunkenship.
And the cartographer had listed how to getto the endless havoc, which is sunken.
And.
Find out that this compass is specificallyused for finding mystical creatures by
using mystical creature parts.

(20:29):
So they're looking for a Rizzle.
They would use the hair of a Rizzle tofind the compass, but point them in the
direction of Rizzle, the closest Rizzle.
If they're trying to find a Knightmare youknow, use a blade of a Knightmare and it
would point them to the closest Knightmareand so on and so forth.
just as they're literally seconds awayfrom getting out of the city walls.

(20:54):
And the Snallygaster sets off the alarm.
And this breaks off into chapter 19, theghost woods, uh, where.
The alarm has been set.
They continue to run through the woods andZelfree's again using the blood scent,
just like Calisto likely is to be able to,to track Illia.

(21:15):
They end up getting attacked by these wispbugs.
which are described as being able to eatyour eyes and brain out as well as any
other, you know, soft issue.
So Atty does them all what she assumes tobe a favor and lights them on fire.
So full Phoenix at work there goes in andlights them up.

(21:36):
But then Zelfree comes up and immediatelyscolds her for doing this because it gave
away their position.
Look, I don't know about you.
I'd rather be alive with my brains and mysoft tissue than give them away position
away.
It seems like a fair trade to me.
I get where Zelfree is coming from and heprobably had some other way, but when all

(21:57):
you've got is fire, burn them to death.
Yep.
Zelfree actually stops.
He knows Callisto is coming.
He seems to have a little better idea ofhow to be able to handle Callisto.
So he tells Atty, Volke and Adelgist tokeep going.
They're running through the woods and theyend up essentially all falling down a

(22:19):
hill, tripping over roots.
And Volke remembers some advice thatthey're giving him that shadows can't
fall.
So instead of landing on his face, he usesit and shadow steps into it, ends up
coming out unhurt.
If you're one of the clumsiest persons inthe world and you're a Knightmare arcana,
you will never fall again in your life.

(22:41):
It's shadow step.
Oh, shadow step.
It's a superpower all on its own.
It really is.
So Volke comes out and he's uninjured, butunfortunately Adelgis' side is hurt.
And this reminds us that, you know, hey,we saw him without his shirt off kind of a
few chapters back and his side was lookingrough.

(23:02):
So you can only imagine that it's thatsame side and that there's something going
on there that's really bothering you.
Then we kind of out that
Atty can't actually use her Phoenix magicto heal.
So she...
I imagine this is one of those moments oflike, you're telling me that you could
produce fire, but that's it.
You can't do anything else.

(23:24):
You've got to be shitting me right now.
One thing we need.
So he's left on their own and Atty'sembarrassed just because she knows this is
something she should be able to do.
She knows Zaxis can do it and they arecanists at the same time.
So she's...
at the lack of, you know, help that shecan provide.

(23:45):
And they end up noticing Illia's bloodmarks.
They're spaced out pretty far, so, youknow, it's telling that she was going and
teleporting in small little bursts to tryand get away.
She's still leaving a trail so they'reable to get to her, but she is, you know,
earlier the message was always, you know, learn to think with your magic, and she's

(24:07):
really taken that to heart and...
knowing she can teleport quicker than shecan run.
And then the Snallygaster shows up andattacks them with what seems to be an
intestine snare.
It kind of coughs up this mess and shootsit out.
And, you know, Volke and Atty are bothgetting pulled into it and Volke ends up

(24:29):
using his terrors to free himself and thenreaches into the shadows to grab his
sword.
This is kind of the opportunity where
him and Atty team up, you know, he's she'sprepared for the terrors.
He uses them.
The Snallygaster let's go for a moment andthen Atty is able to use her fire to blast

(24:51):
at the Snallygaster.
I feel like at this point, you know, everybody's kind of that like I'm tired of
getting hit with your terrors to likefriendly fire.
Yes, he's has no no range with them.
They're just firing everywhere.
It's all over the place.
Fortunately, the first
blast is blocked, the snailygaster is ableto use its wings to block it, but you

(25:13):
know, once they combine and kind of timeeverything up correctly, they're able to
scare off the snailygaster injured enoughso that it ends up fleeing away.
They come to a clearing and they findZaxis, Illia and Hexa and Volke is
excited.
He finally got to meet up with them.
He's, you know, ready to help take care ofIllia and

(25:36):
Hexa and Zaxis step up and just startsculpting it.
I feel like that's kind of a bit uncalledfor unwarranted because it's not like
anything I say wrong.
Yeah.
He didn't agree immediately to go withthem on this adventure.
Talking previously agree with Volke'sdecision of not wanting to go.

(25:56):
This was not a well planned out attempt.
Yeah.
I'm pretty lucky.
Right.
This is one of those they just managed.
by pure luck and nothing else.
Like the fact that Illia can teleport, yep, that worked out for her.
That's the only part of the plan thatworked out according to plan.

(26:18):
Callisto's still out there.
They're being hunted.
It's a bad situation overall and Volke isonly trying to help at this point.
Exactly.
And we move on into to kind of chapter 20,which is the Water Cave.
And this really gets into...
You know, Zaxis is being upset becausetheir plan was, hey, Illia is going to
teleport.

(26:38):
There's no way for Callisto to track them.
And, you know, now he's going to be ableto because Volke led them over.
Adelgis just points out that he's amanticore Arcanist, so he can actually
track by the scent of blood.
So really they were screwed either way, nomatter what happened.
And Zaxis just gives his best line of sofar, whatever.

(27:01):
I feel he says.
I mean, he's a teenager, so it's allreality.
You know, he's on the high school dramahere.
And like, Calisto being a manticore youknow, I'll track her blood.
No matter what was said, like Volke couldhave not been there, Zelfree could have
not been there, Atty, Adelgis, justwouldn't have mattered.

(27:23):
Calisto would still have been able totrack her blood just because she got
stabbed.
So like, you know, that's where thefrustration is at the moment, but.
Yeah, it's.
I understand the frustration, but at leastthey know they're getting tracked this way
before they would have been all, you know, taking their sweet time, assuming that
they're all free when Callisto is hard ontheir tails.

(27:45):
And as they're in their mini discussion, there's a bunch of frost that forms over
the area.
And if this were Pokemon, a while Wendigowould have appeared.
So Volke stays behind to fight and Adelgisjust stays to help.
and kind of explain that his magic isreally the opposite where volks is to hide

(28:09):
his magic is to reveal so he can helpactually reveal where the Wendigo is when
it's invisible.
I actually really like this when I read itwas like oh my gosh like having an Adelgis
just being that kind of you know yin andyang kind of between Volke and Adelgis
just to be able to reveal the Wendigo andbe able to see that when they're trying to

(28:30):
use their invisibility.
That's really quite awesome.
And it's that like, we have some kind ofadvantage.
It's not the advantage I would havethought.
I really thought that one of the PhoenixArcanists would have stayed, you know,
ice, maybe fire would help.
Maybe you can melt the ice.
It seemed like there might be somethinggoing on there that might help them a
little more.

(28:52):
Volke is swinging widely with his sword, trying to hit a target and missing.
And Adelgis just uses his light magic,which...
breaks up the invisibility.
But unfortunately, it also gives the groupaway as we soon know, because Zelfree is
able to find them based on that.
They end up, you know, able to chase offthe Wendigo so they're free.

(29:16):
They come back to the group and Illia isteleporting everyone to an underground
cave where they have an escape boat.
Volke is very impressed by her powers andhow strong they are that she's able to
teleport people to this
you know, location that they had hiddenaway.
Hey, remember, for away, that is the plan.

(29:37):
She figured out her power.
Right.
I actually love that they have thisunderground cave and that she's able to
teleport people by just touching them.
And I actually like, you know what?
This is where I give them a lot of kudos.
They have just flown off the gun andapparently they use the eight days to get

(29:58):
to.
Port Crown, they used it wisely andactually did a little bit more planning
than just, we're going to teleport away.
And I'm curious how they found the cave.
It seems like they might've spent sometime roaming around, but it definitely
pays off for them.
They go to the cave and Nicollin isactually waiting for them in the cave.

(30:19):
Volke asks him why and he explains thatRizzles are essentially lures for magic
hunting.
So if he were out there, everybody wouldbe on a lookout for him.
And they're packing up the boat to go sailaway.
And Adelgis is concerned, a littleworried, very nervous.
And we kind of get more of Zaxis makingfun of him for being a coward.

(30:42):
Kind of an unfortunate look for Adelgis.
You know, he's great.
I really want to root for him.
So it's rough that he's getting bullied byMr.
Whatever.
Well, and I understand Adelgis too, because he doesn't have a physical attack
like, you know, fire.
He doesn't have...
shadows to be able to manipulate.
He's got a light beam that he can shoot atsomebody, but you feel like he's as far as

(31:05):
offensive magic goes, he's really doesn'thave any.
So I can understand why Adelgis just to bea little bit nervous on that, but yeah,
this is probably something that Adelgisjust wasn't a hundred percent expecting
when he joined the first field either.
No, he was definitely looking to do someresearch.
So he's getting more than his fair shareof adventure.

(31:25):
And as they're getting into the ship, Attyand Volke have
a very cute little moment where their legstouch.
So, so, so teacher, so perfect.
Oh my gosh.
They legs touched.
Physical contact.
Well, but then there's, you know, ZaxisIllia and Hexa that are basically doing
the same thing on the other side thatthey're all squeezed in together as well.

(31:48):
And, you know, I'm sure Zaxis is like, Ohmy gosh.
Oh my gosh.
Oh my gosh.
I'm touching Illia.
We went on this crazy adventure and I gotto, you know, we got to touch each other.
for a little bit and we were so closetogether.
Yes, they are living their high life rightnow.
And as they get into sale away, Adelgisjust again being obsessed with the market

(32:09):
brings up the market again and wants totalk about what he saw there.
Freak quickly cuts him off because nobodyhas been listening to him and he just
wants to get away.
So Adelgis just is again, but back and offof his market.
I feel like at this point, it's all free.
It's just like, I don't care what anybodyhas to say.
to shut up so I can have some quiet.

(32:30):
And so that way, at least somebody canlisten to me for once.
Yes.
For one moment.
Can somebody please listen?
All right.
And that ends our five chapters for thisweek.
We'll get into our bestiary here.
So the Roc as we mentioned, is a giantbird.
It's the size of sailing ships.
It actually originates from Middle Easternmythology.

(32:52):
Trial of Worth, again, unknown.
So for some of these, you know, we do...
see the Elderin but we don't quite know, you know, what the bonding ceremony is
like production through progeny.
So two little rocks coming together.
They're able to vary weather dependentmagic.
So they evoke icy winds.

(33:13):
Their manipulation is on the wind and theyactually augment sharpness.
So they've really helped with seeing themore to how Volke can see in the dark.
They help just see things at a greaterdistance, which.
as you can imagine being on a ship orsailing, that's a huge benefit.
The innate abilities that they provide, one is additional sharp eyesight and they

(33:38):
are also man -eaters, so they are imbuingto blood diseases.
All right.
And next we have the Kappa.
The mythology comes from Japan.
These are considered as humanoid fish withwebs, hands and feet.
They have very gangly limbs.
They have glow in the dark eyes.

(33:59):
Again, their trial of worth is a mothermust sacrifice her firstborn child.
So if, I guess, if you don't reallyparticularly care for your child, then
this is your perfect elderin in for you.
These are considered elderin in that don'tparticularly want to bond.
Their reproduction is progeny again.
So mom of Kappa and dad of Kappa.
They are able to evoke acid.

(34:23):
They're able to manipulate water and theyare able to augment their eyesight to be
able to see through murky waters.
And they have innate abilities of beingimbuing to blood disease.
So again, man -eater aldrin.
They are able to breathe underwater andthey're able to tell the age of children
by smelling them.

(34:44):
This is one of the few abilities where Idon't actually know where that would be
useful.
Right.
Like carnival, I guess?
I don't know.
You'll never win a prize.
Right.
And then last up, we have the Snallygasterwhich comes from German mythology.
It's actually supposed to be found inrural Maryland.

(35:05):
So if you're in the Maryland area, go findyour Loch Ness monster.
And it's described as being a mutateddragon.
which is a mix of bird and lizard.
A trial of worth, as we saw with theArcanist with Callisto is they must
actually cut off a piece of themselves andthen feed it to the Snallygaster.
So really rough.
There's not too much known about them interms of, you know, evocation,

(35:29):
manipulation, augmentation pretty unknown.
We do know that they can spit up theseintestine snares, but it's not really
described in too much detail what thatactually looks like or how they actually
You know, are able to augment theirarcanist powers.
All right.
