bars of the Smithy District, where regularlaw enforcement fears to patrol.

(00:46):
Alone with only his Eldrin and a Will -O-Wisp arcanist for backup, and no one in
the Frith Guild having any idea where hewent, what could go wrong?
But before we get back to the book,
Let's look at a piece of advice from theseries.
Hexa the Hydra Arcanist says, This is theFrith Guild, home to legendary heroes who

(01:06):
saved countless lives, from the mundane tothe magnificent.
We don't beat people into their place.
We demand people step up to the challenge.
So, what say you?
Can you live up to those expectations?
With that, let's join Eric and Scott forchapters 41 through 45 of Colosseum
Arcanist.

(01:26):
Hello and welcome back to the Frith guildpodcast.
I'm Eric.
And I'm co -host Scott.
And today we're diving into chapters 41through 45 of the Coliseum Arcanist Before
we get into today's chapters, do you alsowant to thank everybody for listening?
And we would like to ask everyone to showus some love by giving us a like, comment,
sharing, rating, uh, basically whateverplatform you're listening on for us.

(01:50):
So let us know how we're doing.
And in addition to that, I also want tomake mention that the Frith Chronicles
Wiki link is in the description along withthe link for the capital station discord
server.
So you can go over there and join in onthe fun there.
And without further ado, we're going toget in chapters 41, a man with many jobs.
So Volke goes into like master disguisemode with his long overcoat and even wets

(02:14):
his hair so he can like put his hair down.
That way, you know, nobody can see thathe's an Arcanist.
He's looking for the man that's paying outthe jobs and he's trying to find basically
a bar where he would be at and Volke goesin and just, hey, I need a job.
And the bartender knows exactly who he'sasking for.
But unfortunately she said, nah, I haven'tseen him.

(02:36):
Volke's outside walking around in theSmithy district, trying to find this guy.
He kind of has this thought of, man, Ireally got to pity the fool that tries to
mug me.
A little self -confidence going.
Yup.
Probably thinking like maybe if I can getmy hair up into a mohawk and be like Mr.
T.
Be the fool.
So he does keep trying different pubs andbars and all this and he's getting

(02:58):
straight answers at least.
So at least he knows he's doing somethingright.
It's gotta be the coat.
The lost and found coat is just too goodto turn down.
Are we sure it wasn't imbued withsomething to give him extra cutting
abilities?
Why is nobody concerned whatsoever?

(03:18):
The Volke is just walking around, goingall over the place and nobody knows where
he is.
I feel like this is his MO.
He really seems to do this a lot.
Like, Oh, I just win my tourney match.
I'll just go bop around for a little bit.
I'm going to go exploring to see what'sout here.
Cause you know, I'm such a, such an islandbumpkin that, uh, you know, I want to go

(03:42):
see the city.
Lo and behold, Zaxis comes running downthe alley and he's like, Hey Volke, how's
it going buddy?
I'm not your buddy, pal.
I'm not your pal, man.
And so this is kind of like an instantVolke realizes something's not right
because this is not Zaxis whatsoever.

(04:06):
And he instantly realizes that it's Karna.
And she's actually kind of irritated thatVolke figured this out so fast.
Volke seems to always figure this out.
He quickly got it a couple of other timesas well.
He seems to have just a really good feelfor his friends.
Or at least knows their mannerisms wellenough.
And I can imagine if like there's somebodythat Karna knew more personally.

(04:30):
Someone she knew more intimately.
Right.
Then she would know their mannerisms andcan...
hide herself in their skin a lot better.
So Luthair was kind of suspicious of whatwas going on, but not suspicious enough to
take action against Zaxis quote unquote.
He just does not feel like he would be agood guard because he a lot of times is

(04:50):
like, I've thought of it, but I didn'twant to step in.
Like he's, he's never quite willing totake the leap.
Right.
Like.
Of all people, do you think Luthair wouldbe the one that's like, I'll maybe be mama
hen here and make sure I take care of mybaby.
But he's just like, the kid, the kidswims.

(05:12):
He swims.
If he sinks he sinks.
Oh, Volke gets touched by Karna.
He goes into like doppelganger mode.
So like he can't do anything.
And then out of nowhere, Fain just stabsKarna in the throat.
Like no big deal.
And Volke's like, you know what?
Maybe it's a good thing that I have astalker in Fain cause he saved me.

(05:35):
First time that one's ever been thought aswell.
I'm glad I have a stalker.
So, and this is again, one of thosemoments that Fain realizes that Karna is
Karna before Luthair does.
And I'm starting to lose the trust inLuthair here.
Like he's supposed to be his elder andhe's supposed to be the one looking out
for Volke.
But here Fain is, being the renegadepirate, taking care of Volke better.

(05:58):
We do find out that Karna and the crew ofthe Sun Chaser were hired by the person
who was doing out these jobs.
Now the Sun Chaser is an airship.
that is held up by ROC magic and Fainrecognizes the ship from port crown and
Karna even recognizes him being a part ofCallisto's crew.
So Karna thinks that Fain is actually hisbrother Kalroux and fortunately he's not

(06:24):
and again there's that like I imaginethere's an awkward like spider -man pose
of like wait a minute I know you and youeveryone having a little standoff against
each other.
Right?
Well, like I'm not truly the bad personhere.
You're the bad person because this iswhere I saw you at.
So then even Luthair recognizes the sunchaser and identifies them as basically

(06:47):
mercenaries.
People that are paid to do a job, theydon't care what the job is.
As long as they get money at the end ofit, they get it.
And the crew is made up of Arcanist thathave either been kicked out of guilds or
have been rejected from other guildspreviously.
So I feel like this is kind of that.
band of misfit toys from the claymationanimations, you know, Christmas movies.

(07:11):
Karna does agree to tell Volke the name ofthe person who hired the crew.
As long as Volke leaves the frith guildand joins the sun chaser.
First, he's recruited by the steel thorninquisitors.
Now he's getting recruited by the sunchaser.
He's got everyone chasing after him.
Beaten off girls with sticks.
He's got guilds.
He's got a beat off now.

(07:33):
Like, can't catch a break.
He's famous.
So this is where chapter 42 starts up atcelebrations.
Karna is in the belief that the frithguild will actually ruin Volke and she
wants to be the only person to ruin andFain wants to give them privacy again.

(07:53):
It's just, you know, I know I stabbed youin the neck, but maybe you two want to
have some alone time right now.
Maybe Fain's like, okay, like, do you guysreally want that?
Like Volke have you -
Have you matured a little bit since thelast time this opportunity arose or are we
still, we still going off of that?
So the whole crew of the sun chaser knowsabout Volke.

(08:13):
And this is kind of a weird one becauseyeah, it makes sense with steel thrown
inquisitors knowing about Volke.
Having a Knightmare.
Okay.
But the fact that the whole crew of thesun chasers knows about him.
Like Karna go back to the sun chaser andwas like, Hey everybody, I met this silly
Knightmare Arcanist that's very gullible.

(08:34):
Let me take his guild pendant.
Yeah, you should bet on him.
Right.
And so the blacksmiths got money on Volketo win the tourney The captain's impressed
that Volke was allowed to not join theSteel Thorn Inquisitor's guild.
That's impressive in itself.
He is the only Knightmare Arcanist outsideof it.

(08:55):
So he is standing in his own right there.
I still bet the guild master is probablylike.
having his cards of all like stat cards ofall the knightmares and not having volks
is like, God damn it.
It's not a complete set.
It'll be worth so much more once I get theset.
But it's complete.

(09:16):
So Volke in his ability to close the Karnaagain, actually gets his guild pendant
back.
Finally.
About time.
Right?
He's gone a while without it.
I mean,
Again, apprentices lose shit.
So Karna agrees to a favor owed to Volke.
And Volke's like, Whoa, Whoa, Whoa, Whoa.
What do I have to do in return?

(09:37):
And she's like, Hmm, I don't know yet, butI'll save this.
It's not going to be illegal or anythingobjectively immoral.
So that way you're okay.
Mr.
Play by the rules.
Right.
So at least she understands that Volkewon't do anything outside of the rules.

(09:57):
A lot of other people need to take thisand, you know, at least his enemies need
to be like, Hey, the dude don't playoutside of the rules.
Let's, let's use that to our advantagehere, but she was the only one smart
enough to figure it out.
So, right.
So the sun chaser really wants Volke or atleast to meet him.
So she does tell Volke finally that afterhe agrees to her, her deal that a ghoul

(10:21):
Arcanist was paying for odd jobs, likegetting information on what trinkets are
worn by the knights draconic
And this Sky Legionnaires and Karna wastechnically hired to steal a crown and
then locating the rune stones, but thatwasn't necessarily her job.
She was mainly just to steal the crown.

(10:42):
She did give them the information for itas part of it.
So, but she did say that she actuallydidn't even steal the crown because she
didn't want to, she felt guilty, I guess.
The lockdown happened before she could getto it probably.
Wonder if her morals got in the way ofstealing it.
Volke changed her.
Look at Volke being the good example.

(11:05):
The influencer.
Maybe he's Karna's knight in shiningarmor.
Volke remembers that he has the occultcompass available and does ask Karna to
get any kind of ghoul trinket whatsoeverso that he can actually track down this
ghoul arcanist Volke and Fain end upstarting.
taking their walk back to the inn.

(11:26):
And Volke tells Fain that he talked toZelfree and Zelfree actually has agreed to
train Fain.
Fain says that Volke is too trusting andI've got to agree with Fain on this.
It agreed.
Easy agree.
Volke, I'm sorry.
You're a bit too naive at times and youknow, you got a big heart and we all love
you for it, but how has it not burnt youeven worse than it already has?

(11:47):
He's gotten lucky.
He barely escaped after Karna.
That could have been real rough.
Yeah.
Like again, that's kind of what saved him.
But again, it's just that like how he, he,they're, they're very lucky that he hasn't
gotten kidnapped.
Everyone was in Volke's room when he getsback and they're all taught they're,

(12:08):
they're getting wasted in his room.
Like, like Nicholin is sitting in a mug ofale wasted.
I want to see that so bad.
Just Nicholin just.
passed out in a mug of a mug.
Just, just letting it soak into his skin.
He says it's got self aging properties.

(12:28):
Oh yeah.
You got to absorb that.
He finds out they're actually celebratingtheir win after the tournament and they
kind of just assumed that Volke was goingto take off.
Which you know, kudos to them figuring itout.
They decided they're just going to movethe whole party into Volke's room.
So that when he does come back, supposedlyif he came back that.

(12:49):
they, he'd be there to celebrate withthem.
So ironically, they ask where Volke hasbeen and, uh, if they've been found out
that he was with Fain.
So Volke having a really crappy like pokerface is kind of like, I was with Fain.
So the whole atmosphere in this roomshifts.
I imagine everybody that's like hammeredat this point is probably like stone cold

(13:13):
sober.
And Atty thankfully does remind everyone.
put it in the past and try to enjoy thepresent.
Volke does agree that he will beresponsible for Fain and that if he makes
Illia uncomfortable whatsoever for anyperiod of time, even for a heartbeat, that
Volke will no longer associate with Fain.
Volke does let Fain in and immediatelyZaxis just starts going like, you're going

(13:36):
to listen to this, we're in charge.
You're going to listen to what I saybecause I'm in charge and you're going to
listen to what Illia says because she's mywoman.
I'm sure she enjoyed being called that.
I mean, they're, they're in a newrelationship.
I imagine there's that like, Oh, he saidthat I'm his woman.

(13:59):
You know, like a little bit of swooning.
She's, she's bad ass, bad ass enough thatshe doesn't need to be called that.
Like she can stand on her own.
You know that for a fact, but I imaginethere's still that like, Oh, I'm his
starfish.
Yeah.
Fain and Wraith were kind of like, okay, like go ahead, start beating me up.
So that way I know my place.

(14:21):
The guild just sits there like, what?
Um, we don't hate.
Yeah, like, like how badly were you beatenon Callisto's ship?
Everybody basically laughs at him andthey're like, yeah, we won't do that.
You just need to step up.
And that's all we're really going to askyou.
And then Hexa comes like flying bear hugtoward Fain.

(14:41):
So at least we know Hexa doesn't have aproblem with them too much.
Moving into chapter 43 of the tournamentround three.
We're getting some training in for thenext round and that was the only thing to
keep Volke distracted, thankfully.
And this round is the last partner round.
So after this, they will split up and go1v1 for the remaining.

(15:03):
Zaxis is still like busy with Illia.
And part of me wants to know what they'redoing, but the other part of me doesn't
want to know what they're doing becauseyou know, adults, new relationship and
such.
Fain goes in and starts training withVolke instead and...
On the day of the tournament, Volke goesdown to the Coliseum and sees that the two

(15:23):
of them are going to be competing againstthe other Huntsman Guild Apprentices.
And these are the Denglong Arcanist andthe Earlking Arcanist.
And this is going to take some seriousstrategizing to defeat them because this
is basically like anti -Volke and Zaxisteam.
Like they're, they're fighting a lighttype and a fire immune type.

(15:47):
Like.
This is going to be difficult.
And Volke notices that the Stone Golem,Arcanist and Niro are going to be fighting
Illia and Hexa.
So Volke finds himself a little room tostart reading up on what, what to do to
defeat these.
And Zaxis walks in like at the last secondand wants to start strategizing them.
Like what, where were you?

(16:09):
But it's also Volke's fault they didn'tstrategize earlier.
Right.
Zaxis is like, yeah, it's all your fault.
You weren't around.
So you know.
You're the reason you missed your shot.
You got to take more responsibility.
So they got to the arena and Jevel the,uh, reaper Arcanist is out there with his
apprentices.

(16:30):
See Zelfree and he's like, Hey, let's makea bet.
If the Huntsman Guild wins, then Zelfreewill have to fight me.
So Zelfree is like, all right, cool.
I got this.
How about when we win, we'll get 10 starshards and 25 gold crowns.
And you know, Jevel's like.
We got this.
This is like the team.
It's in the bag.
We've got the type advantage.

(16:52):
Yup.
And that brings us into chapter 44, whichis the light show.
So Zelfree's excellent advice to Volke andZaxis is don't lose.
He does not want to have to fight.
So he's, he's banking on them for pulling.
To give a little bit of a background, theDenglong is this dog dragon creature.

(17:13):
It's.
the size of a wolf and has a red mane, scales and talons.
The Erlking on the other end is very tiny,it's a little fairy and it leaves a little
illusion in its wake when it moves.
So it's got this little trail of fairydust almost behind it.
And as they're getting sent to begin thebattle, Lyvia actually sends golden

(17:36):
poppies down to them through Forsythe
Aww.
I imagine she's practically like hangingoff the spectator box, like trying to get
as close to Volke and Zaxis.
It's so cute.
Their biggest supporter.
The battle kicks off and the fairyimmediately tries to blind them,

(17:58):
essentially shoot out a huge blast oflight across the entire arena.
Thankfully, Zaxis did watch all of thegame film on this on their previous
battles because he knew this was comingand tells Volke to...
to shield his eyes.

(18:39):
Aim your fire at my shield instead of atthe Denglong And lo and behold, this
creates a giant beam of light and ends upknocking the Denglong out of the arena.
This must have been such a confusingmoment for all of the spectators to
include the announcer.
Cause he even was like, is he justattacking his own teammate?

(18:59):
Like what?
I have to beat somebody up, but I can'tbeat the enemy out.
So I'm just going to beat up my teammate.
Little friendly fire.
Fire good, I like fire.
Yes, they do repeat this tactic on theDenglong Arcanist and end up knocking him
out as well, but unfortunately they're hitby an illusion and they appear that they

(19:23):
are inside of a meadow.
Zaxis remembers the setup of the arena anddashes forward to try and punch out the
fairy and the Arcanist.
The Erlking does dodge this, but ends upgetting knocked out by Forsythe who is
coming in behind.

(19:44):
So at this point, the Arcanist exits thearena as well and they do end up winning
the match.
I just imagine just watching Zaxis goinglike, jumping up and trying to punch the
fairy.
As if the fairy hadn't moved either.
Like I get the arena stayed the same, butthat fairy's probably moved since you last

(20:05):
-
The next fight up is Hexa and Illia.
And if they win, they will end up facingVolke and Zaxis in the semi -finals.
Which does bring us to chapter 45.
The name of the chapter is the semi-finals.
We are going to start just before the semi-finals with Hexa and Illia's match.
So they again are fighting Niro, who iswearing armor that is made from the scales

(20:29):
of his stoor worm and the stone golem.
The stoorworm is a venomous creature.
It has a very corrosive touch and they areknown man eater.
Do you think that the null stone, sorry, this is just a random thought too, the
null stone that's in the castle, do youthink that gets like turned off and on
every single time that Vercingetorix roarsfrom this Coliseum or does he have to be

(20:53):
in the castle?
I'm not sure and I'm not sure.
Does he add something to his roar?
to turn it off?
Like, does he have levels of roar that hecan use?
Like, imagine being like an Erlking or,uh, what's the one that's holding up the
telekinetic field around the Coliseum?

(21:14):
Engkanto Yeah, Engkanto.
Something like that.
Imagine having one of them employed tolike do the laundry and that kind of
stuff.
And there they are just trying to take theeggs into the kitchen and all of a sudden
he roars for this next fight to start andtheir power cuts out and they're just
like, God.
Dang it.
Drop the eggs again.
And they go out to get more eggs and thenthe same thing happens again.

(21:38):
Like there's gotta be a workaround.
Right.
So when the match starts, the wormimmediately goes for Raisen much quicker
and essentially is too fast for them toeven react to knock Raisen out of the
arena.
Uh, the golem is absolutely monstrousswings and knocks.

(22:00):
Illia and Hexa out.
So the only one left is Nicholin and so heteleports into the Arcanist pants and just
starts biting him all over.
The Arcanist is jumping around, ends upjumping out of the arena just to get away,
which does eliminate both But Nicholindidn't technically touch the ground.

(22:23):
It's a good point.
I feel like the projects gave him thatone.
Yeah.
He didn't have much chance of coming backin.
So they, they come out of the arena andthey are distraught and Volke ends up
going over to comfort Illia andessentially by reminding her that her
focus really is on Callisto and not on thetournament.

(22:47):
And Zaxis in order to be the most amazingboyfriend that he has jumps in and tries
to comfort her instead.
Probably Volke's like, God dang it.
Here's another competition that I don'twant to start.
be involved in whatsoever, but Zaxis isgoing to make this competition.
Yes.
Just let this, this one's about Illia Wedon't need to, we don't need to make it

(23:07):
about ourselves.
So the matchup is now set for thesemifinals.
So Volke is going to go against Niro andZaxis is going to go against the stone
golem, Arcanist.
So Volke in preparation for his match, heends up going to talk to Niro.
He tells him about Adelgis, about theleech, how Adelgis' life is in danger.

(23:31):
And Niro does say that Theasin hassomething that would heal, but he's only
going to give it to Volke if Volke throwsthe match.
What a freaking douche.
No, no respect for anyone but the dad.
Everyone just wants the dad's love.
Right.
I mean, if the dad said, hey, go jump offa bridge, would you jump off a bridge?

(23:53):
It sounds like it, honestly.
And that concludes our chapters.
So we'll move on to the bestiary.
All right.
Starting with the Erlking, we have themythology comes from European folklore and
myth.
The Erlking is a sinister elf who lingersin the woods.

(24:14):
He talks to children who stay in the woodsfor too long and then kills them by a
single touch.
Cause why not?
Or in world lore, Earl Kings areconsidered the king of fairies.
They do create powerful lights andillusions.
And if they're old enough, they canensnare others with false feelings of
infatuation.
So little cupids here.

(24:35):
Mistifice and callous, these mysticalcreatures often hurt people on accident
with their lethal magic effects.
It's like an oopsie moment.
Not a fun fairy.
No.
So these fairies are tier three andthey're.
Their production is quite interesting aswell as they are fable born and they are

(24:56):
strictly born from a Queen's fairy whoconsumes her Arcanist corpse.
So they start out as a Queen fairy andtheir Arcanist dies and then they eat
their Arcanist.
And then they turn into an Erlking.
A small correction.
The Queen fairy vomits and then the vomitturns into an Erlking.

(25:18):
Gross.
Again, not a nice fairy.
No, I don't like this one.
For evocation, they do have a verypowerful light.
They're able to manipulate light and tocreate illusions.
Erlking's augmentation on themselves makethem immune to instant death magics while
their augmentation on others allow peopleto see through illusions.

(25:40):
So what I'm hearing in this is they couldkill a Reaper and not die.
That would seem to be true.
So King's Revenge may not be effectiveagainst them.
Therefore, Earl Kings are better thanReapers?
They seem to have their weakness.

(26:01):
So...
Yeah, just look at strictly King'sRevenge.
The next one we are going to touch on isthe Stone Golem, which in mythology is an
animated, anthropomorphic being in Jewishfolklore, and it's created from...
inanimate matter, usually clay or mud.

(26:21):
Golems are made of the mineral in the areawhere the golem spawns.
And if you look at the wiki for these, ifyou played Tears of the Kingdom, the flux
construct, it's very similar to that, butin stone.
They are tier three with a fable birth, but the fable isn't quite figured out.
And their trial of worth involves a testof resilience.

(26:42):
Not much detail on their evocation, butthey are able to manipulate stone that's
of the same type.
So,
Clay Golem can manipulate clay, so on andso forth.
And they are able to augment their ownpowers, essentially becoming stronger,
more durable.
And their true form, while it'sunobserved, it does require a Golem to

(27:04):
find a very rare metal deep within theearth.
And with that, we'd like to thank you for, thank you everyone for listening today.
