With the selection of a new Shepherd, the Brotherhood of the United Flesh is at a crossroads.  Ken Peters' watches as the Makwe Camp falls into chaos with the new Shepherd and a divided flock.  This event sends Ken and Jo on separate missions to save the innocent people who saw Makwe as a safe zone and who are now marooned in a hundred square miles of wilderness on the edge of a long winter.
