In 1963, the then recently graduated Oxford historian Malcolm Deas made his first, somewhat unplanned visit to Colombia.
He would go on to devote the majority of his career to the history of this country, even serving as an advisor to former president César Gaviria.
Here, Professor Deas recounts his early days in Colombia before giving us his considered thoughts on the more pertinent issues affecting the nation today.
These include the legacy of controversial former president Álvaro Uribe, whom he regards as being "the saviour of the country" in 2002, street protests and the role of Esmad, the peace process, his rejection of the notion of a Colombian oligarchy and why Virgilio Barco, whose biography he has just published, was an exemplary leader
