Happy Halloween!!
Spooky Season 2023 has ended… which means Spooky Season 2024 is officially underway, and David and Devin are celebrating with two classic ghost stories: THE INNOCENTS (1961), directed by Jack Clayton, and THE HAUNTING (1963), directed by Robert Wise. Adapting two famous works of literature (Henry James’ The Turning of the Screw and Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House, respectively), the black-and-white films have their female protagonists arrive at gorgeous old Victorian manors… and encounter ghosts?
We have much to talk about: from queer-coding, to second-wave feminism, to ambiguous endings, to the very definition of Gothic horror. So turn out the lights and burn some candles as we ask the question: What is a ghost?
