Stigma
If we want to make any effort to address the drug overdose crisis, we must include action to reduce stigma.
I share some personal stories of stigma and how I judged, or was afraid to be judged.
The Stigma of an addict
Negative Labeling
The titles we as a society place on a drug or alcohol user
Society's assumption that drug and alcohol users are criminals deserving ostracization.
Society's negative perceptions/judgment
Society's assumption that a substance abuser or addict has a mental illness and/or is lacking self-control, willpower, and is morally flawed.
Addressing the hostility from public and health care professionals
Stigma of treatment (Major barrier)
The negative perceptions/judgment about substance abuse treatment and recovery
Substance abusers and addicts are assumed to be crazy and that a treatment center is an institutionalization.
Body brokers
The substance abusers/addict's perception that treatment will impact their job or community involvement.
Resolutions
Society should shift the language to person first – focus on person not condition.
My role to use mass media to combat stigma and educate the public and provide accurate and relatable info about treatment.
