The second largest city in Ireland is Cork. Located on the southwest coast of Ireland, it is the capital of County Cork and the seat of government for Munster region. Cork is located about 90 km west of Limerick, 70 km east of Waterford and 30 km north of Killarney.
In 1845, the city was named the county town of County Cork. This status was confirmed by Queen Victoria in 1850. Cork is home to several universities including University College Cork, IT Tallaght, and NUI Galway.
The city is considered one of the most livable cities in the world. It is ranked number 2 in the list of "Best Places To Live."
Cork is also known as the "Real Capital" of Ireland due to its historic significance during the War of Roses. During the war, Cork was held by the English forces led by Richard de Clare, Earl of Pembroke.
In recent times, Cork has seen significant economic growth. The city has been dubbed the "Silicon Valley of Ireland," because of the high concentration of technology companies based there.
