When I'm creating anything or writing to connect with people, I keep this framework— the Octalysis Principle— in mind. Especially if you want a person to take an action after experiencing your content, this theory will serve you well, so it's worth learning a little bit about.
I'm excited to introduce you to Yu-kia Chou's Octalysis Framework so you begin to think about how to design things to serve a higher intent... that of the human consuming it. Applying gamification and behavioral design techniques to craft experiences that delight humans applies to real-world applications for products, services, educational/instructional design, corporate training/onboarding, and more.
"Gamification is the craft of deriving all the fun and engaging elements found in games and applying them to real-world or productive activities."
In this video, I intro and briefly explain the 8 core drives that motivate humans to take action as outlined in Yu-kai's formula. They represent both intrinsic and extrinsic motivators in people, and I mention there is also a black hat vs. white hat component to it as well. Here are the 8 Core Drives:
1- Higher Meaning and Calling
2- Accomplishment and Reward
3- Empowerment and Creativity
4- Ownership and Possession
5- Social Influence and Relatedness
6- Scarcity and Impatience
7- Unpredictability and Curiosity
